He has a great sense of humor and is also really helpful. He makes chemistry fun, but his class is not a piece of cake, although he will help you with anything if you ask. I definitely advise taking him if you have the choice!!!
Dr. Maddox is very knowlegable about his subject and he is so good at explaining things. The tests reflect the lecture, the homework is relevent and helpful. He is very funny, his lectures are most entertaining and enjoyable and he has a charming English accent. He wants students to succeed and is always available, helpful, and accessible.
Prof. Maddox is a wonderful prof! I was aprehensive about chem in the beginning. He made a "little easier". He is available for help when you need it. Taking chem? TAKE HIM!
Professor Maddox helped so much, he is the most wonderful teacher I wish he was teaching all the science classes I would be standing in line to get in his classes, I definitly recommend him. Dont take anyone else you will be missing out on a great teacher!!!! I swear.
Maddox is a part-time teacher here. Doesn't go by the textbook. Hasn't read it OR the lab manual. His assignments require info not in them. He doesn't tell you that, but he grades hard anyway. Time spent finding this info cuts into homework time for other classes. Only those with friends/family with chem backgrounds are doing well.
I thought he was an excellent teacher!!! He gives 100pts possible for extra credit and they are easy to get. His test are easy too. I only got a C in the class becuase i was slacking but you can easly get an A OR B.
He is very helpful and personable. Explains things clearly.
great teacher
He does not go by the book at all. doest have office hours. Gives assignments with questions he never talked about in class. Grades labs and home work very hard. Only people who did good in his class were people who were already familiar with Chem 310. More than half of my class dropped his class. He makes u feel like an idiot when u ask for help.
I took this class over the summer of '05. I hate chemistry........and I got an A in the class...... This teacher is very willing to help you understand the material. He explains this well and adds humor to the class. Highly recommended. I definitley take from him again.
explains material well
After my last Chem Class experience, I thought of giving up on Chemistry. Mr Maddox is AWESOME. His lectures are clear and he makes Chemistry very understantable. Very helpful in lab too. Oh and he loves Viggo Mortensen
Dr. Maddox weaves humor into his lectures, is very knowledgeable, organized, and approachable. He often finds more than one way to explain the material to reach more students. He has high expectations, but does all he can to assist his students in achieving. He schedules tutor sessions, refers students to study skill classes, etc.
Dr. Maddox is a cool teacher. I didn't pass, only because it was my fault, I didn't pay much attention to this class. I would definitely take him again, but will not fit into my sched next semester. He makes the lectures funny and interesting, and has an English accent.
i would have never made it without him!
Mr. Maddox is a fantastic professor! He is very fair and he cares about those whom care about his class. Mr. Maddox and I have a common taste in music, which made me see him more as a smart buddy rather then a professor. I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to go "ONE STEP BEYOND!!!" ((SMILES))
Great teacher, he is extremely helpful and loves Chemistry. Lecture attendence isn't madatory but Lab attendence is. Go to class and you'll have no problems.
He's the best! I've taken the same class with the same book a year ago with another professor (differnet college) and had to drop. I'm currently taking his class and it's been a world of difference! He's VERY, fair VERY helpful, gives TONS of examples, and his tests aren't bad if you study from his study guides. TAKE HIM!!!
GREAT teacher! He is very interested in helping you achieve results through learning. He is very organized...very efficient at posting grades and is FAIR. The only way you can fail is if you don't do the work!
good teacher but who ever said you just have to do the work and you will pass its not true the class is hard and you have to study alot if you dont study and practice you wont pass enless you are really good in the subject.
GREAT TEACHER!!! NO JOKING. VERY HELPFUL,UNDERSTANDING AND PATIENT. NEED TO LISTEN TO LECTURES TO PASS.
he is really good professor...very organize ....u really have to study for his test....he hav alot of tricky question...but his preety fair...
Couldn’t ask for a more helpful professor. Always prepared, has all lecture notes online, and is excellent with posting grades in a timely manner. With that in mind, he knows his stuff...and its a very challenging class. Worked by butt off for a B. My advice, get all the little points you can.. It makes a difference in the end!
Awesome teacher. VERY HELPFUL AND DEDICATED!!! Stayed for an hour and a half...AFTER the class was over! His Anglo-Scottish accent makes the class that much more interesting!
Great teacher. Chemistry is a hard subject, but he made sure to do his best in helping everyone understand. His tests are pretty hard, but they are on a curve. Overall a VERY fair teacher. He posts grades quickly, which I LOVE. I had to work my ass off to get an A, but ended up learning a lot. Recommended.
The class was really easy I got an A+ and didn't stay for most of the lectures he curves all of the test which makes it easy to get a good grade. He is also good at explaining the subject
Maddox pwns. Not only is he extremely good at his job, he's highly personable and is very approachable (especially with the British accent). If you can take Maddox, he makes Chemistry make sense and has good organization for the students to learn in. Thumbs up all the way. If you're reading this Maddawg, you rule.
Tough subject but if you stick it out to the end you can pass
proffesor maddox is a great teacher who explains everything using powerpoint and good examples. he also makes the material easy to understand
If you have to take Chem 305 take Dr. Maddox. I have a degree from a large university, and I did not know what to expect at community college. He may be one of the best lecturers I have ever had and that says a lot considering I LOATHE chemistry. He is approachable, personable, and he is pretty cute!! Not to mention he has a great sense of humor
He has to be one of the best chemistry teachers out in AR. He explains everything clearly and teaches very well. I thought that chem was going to be hard but he made it pretty easy to me.
Maddox was probably one of the most helpful teachers i've ever had. he has a great sense of humor and is very approachable. he spends time after class answering any questions you may have and makes sure you understand the subject fully.
Spectacular teacher. He puts a lot of effort into making sure each student knows the material. Is his class easy? No, but ALL chem classes are hard. It really comes down to how well you know the material, so do yourself a favor and take Maddox. An A is perfectly attainable, but be prepared to work for it.
Absolutely WONDERFUL professor--he knows his stuff and he's willing to share it with you. Clear lectures & very helpful during labs. The English accent & humour make this class very interesting, too!
If you want to learn chemistry, then please don't take this teacher. The only thing he does standing in front of the board & reading everything from his computer; never solves the problems for you. Also, he is very picky& a hard grader. Doesn't return the test to study for the final. Never prints out anything for you. Expects you be too responsible
This class is for those who want to learn chemistry, not for those who seek easy A's. From this class I've learned that if you actually take the time and learn the material it will help you in the future. A's are truly earned in this class, this is the only class I've taken in my one year at Arc that I consider to be a college level class. TAKE HIM
He is the best teacher ever.:) he is hard, yet if you study hard then you will pass because he doesn't want his students to fail. He has "natural" sense of humor which makes his class more interesting. TAKE HIM.
the coolest and the best professor i have in AR!! absolutely love this class..it might not be an easy class, but he's always there to help you as long as you do your part first. if u want an easy A, you might want to look for other classes. but overall it's highly recommended!
Not very helpful. Didn't seem to have interest in helping the students.
Prof. Maddox is a wonderful teacher. He is extremely interested in helping but you have to work your butt off in this class. I studied alot and got a B but hadn't had Chem 310 for a few years. If you work hard, you will do well.
Great professor, very organized and helpful. His grading is little bit hard, but not too bad. Overall a very good teacher.
This professor is nice and helpful. However, you should study hard enough, especially when the class goes to last chapters. Lab report should be turned in on time. The test is not so hard but somewhat tricky.I got an "A" in this class. Thus, I think it's not impossible to get good grade in this class. Recommend him.
I took this class after being out of college a long while. It shocked me how much work he expected. Pre-lab quizes were a frustrating thing to deal with when writing up lab reports but helped your total lab grade. The midterms were easier than the final. He's a very enthusiastic and helpful instructor and I would highly recommend him.
maddox was really helpful if you ask questions and go to his office hours. this was the hardest class i ever took. the subject is a tough one, but maddox gives you e.c. questions on his midterms and final, but still, it was a hard topic for me. i'm just glad it's over.
Maddox is funny & very personable. While the class is hard, he will not make you feel stupid if you don't understand something. He is the type of teacher that wants all of his students to succeed but is not willing to compromise the material to make that happen (which I respect). The class is difficult but I got an A so its definitely possible.
Very good teacher, just do your homework. Does a good job of delivering content.
Great professor! Always professional and organized. I enjoyed his lectures and experiments and learned a LOT. Be prepared to study for a good grade though. Read through previous lab errors to help you with write-ups of lab reports. Dr. Maddox provides a lot of material to help you succeed but it's up to you to use it. Always helpful!!!
TAKE HIM. He's awesome. Didn't use the textbook, the lecture notes were enough. HW is optional but it helps with the quizzes. He grades pretty tough but it helps you learn! And he has an awesome British accent and a good sense of humor which makes the class more interesting and fun. I recommend him to everyone. Be warned tho, the class ain't easy.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken so far. Maddox is a good teacher, he's just a really strict grader. The test's are hard. It is do-able to pass his class. But, if you take his class, make sure to study a lot, and know your stuff. even if you know a little, he barely gives any partial credit. Work hard from the get go, and you're be okay.
this is a very difficult class & you must put in a lot of effort from the very start in order to get a good grade.do All of your work.He is very intelligent and is one of the greatest professors you will get. He is helpful and understanding. His class set-up is easier/organized in my opinion, its just that the subject itself is difficult
Do not take him if you are coming straight out of high school chemistry. He expects you to know a lot ready and it is mostly a self teaching class. He does not prepare you well for the tests and he likes to use much trickier questions on the midterms that are not seen in the homework. Be prepared to study and do a lot of work if you take one of his classes.
Instead of actually teaching you everything first, he expects you to already know everything! The only people that were doing good in his class are either in the chem. field (workwise) or are retaking the class! Loved his personality but his expectations are much much harder than...weissbart for example, where students enjoyed the class, rather tha
Great teacher! Chemistry is a hard class no matter which teacher you get, but Maddox has a sense of humor and is very helpful. If you are actually willing to stay the full lab class (very few people do) you will get so much help. If you haven't taken chem since high school be prepared to struggle the first couple weeks, after that its fine.
Professor Maddox is a great teacher. He is interesting and fun, and is willing to go out of his way to help. Chem 400 starts out slow with a lot of review,so people get lazy and blow the first test. His tests are everything when it comes to grades - and they are difficult. You must go to every lecture and lab and work hard to pass.
In maddox's class it's best to stay as long as you can in lab because he is often able to help and is easily approachable.
This professor not bad but don't take this class with other science classes if you take him.
Chem 400 is a very time consuming class and if you want to do well you have to work hard. With that said- I've also never learned as much (and retained it!) than I did in Maddox's class. Because of his class and how much he challenges students, I'm doing really well in chem 401. If you're going to take more chem, take maddox! You'll know your stuff
If you are not a chem major prepare to pretend like you are for 1 semester. You must live/breath/eat/dream about chem if you want an A in this class. No joke.
Great personality but this class will kick your butt if you don't work hard. It's sooooo exhausting and sometimes you get a lot of material thrown at you in an hour and a half and its easy to think that you have the whole semester but you don't because his tests are by far the hardest I've ever seen.
Difficult but fair. Will prepare you for future chemistry classes. If you never will take another chem class, take Weisbart for he is an easier grader, but Maddox will prepare you for CHEM 401 and beyond.
Very approachable, helpful and has aristocratic approach in teaching, his lab manual pre & post lab works actually makes sense. Stringent grading, but if your work is correct and neat, he will give you all the points you deserve.
Maddox is probably one of the best professors I've ever had. He's extremely organized, helpful, approachable, and very funny. Quick at grading and putting grades online so you know where you are. His class is tough so you're going to have to work hard. Do the homework! It helps for quizzes and exams. Overall great professor.
Very hard class and the way he teaches it doesn't make it much better, but having the lecture notes available really helps. He is very approachable and willing to help, it is just a hard class and you have to be very prepared for the tests.
Approachable and willing to help when you need it. Wont tell you to look in the book when you are having problems. He is one the nicer level 400 professors, although he is not easy. As long as you do the homework and understand it, you will pass. Most people dont start the homework soon enough which is why the class average is low.
You will be in love at the end of the semester, This teacher is super hot and the accent and intelligence just makes him that much better. UMMMM Just study your butt off from the beginning the quizzes are what kills your grade. But hes very fair. And super hot *Drools*
one of the best professor i ever took, his class is challenging but if you study hard you achieve an A. hes supper funny and really cool professor
He writes his own questions and materials, and his class doesn't require you to have the text book. He makes his entire slide set available for purchase in the bookstore. His tests are difficult, because they are a caliber beyond any lecture examples. No note cards allowed. Strong study skills are required.
One of the most inspiring professors I've had! This was the first college level science class I've taken, and I didn't know what to expect. I ended up LOVING the class and the subject! He's super funny, helpful, and engaging in lecture. You don't need the book and should really just use his lecture slides to study. With good study skills,I got an A
I dare you to find a professor that's more organized. The class requires self-motivation, but if you are motivated enough to take an interest in the material and do (and more importantly, understand) the homework, you're almost guaranteed an A. Professor Maddox keeps a laid-back classroom and is personable without exception.
Professor Maddox makes chemistry enjoyable -- he is hilarious and approachable. Be sure to buy the hard copy of the lecture notes and always study from it. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Best of the Chem 400 teachers. Also, if you take him in fall, he will likely teach 401 in the following Spring. Very helpful. I struggle in chemistry and , but he made it very possible to achieve an A. Let's you have one page of notes on tests and tests are very similar to his study guide. TAKE HIM OVER ANY OTHER CHEM PROF.
Greatest Professor I've seen in US.
Really a great, funny, approachable professor. Quizzes are taken from the homework, pre-labpost-lab quizzes given. Exams are difficult and the final was crazy. THERE IS A CURVE on exams and final! About 10% boost. GREAT study habits required! Overall very difficult class - the hardest i've ever taken BUT very fun class. I learned a lot!
He's absolutely awesome! Helping comes from him almost 247. He explains easy and understandable. He's always open for helping. In conclusion, if you need knowledge, Maddox is your professor, but you have to be ready to work hard. I end up loving him at the end of the semester. Prof. Maddox, I miss you...
Maddox is an amazing professor! That being said, it is not an easy class. He teaches in a very straightforward manner, and all material covered in class can be taken home. The labs can be long, but fun. He is very approachable if you need help, and a funny, dorky guy, yet respected at the same time. Study skills and focus are a must.
You get your money's worth with this Professor. He is the real deal, and he will really prepare you for later chemistry classes.
Professor Maddox is a great lecturer. His exams are tough but doable if you put in the time. Make sure you do the homework that is not mandatory. Ask for help early. He is approachable and very willing to help his students. His exams make you thik critically. The final is intense because there are many questions.
This class was THE hardest class I've ever taken, and I'm an engineering student with a straight A background. It was a miracle I managed to even pass with a B. The class average was a C, but that excludes half the class that dropped. His class is meant to weed out the weak and if you're not ready for a nightmare commitment, please heed my warning.
Prof. Maddox is an amazing professor but his tests are tough. To be prepared for his exams: study the lecture notes, review the content summary page, and do the hw. 85% of your grade is from tests, quizzes, and the final. But the quizzes are exactly like the hw. If you're ever confused and need help, he is very helpful during his office hours!
Hardest class I have ever taken by far! If you're not prepared to study A LOT, don't take this class. He's a great professor who is more than willing to help if you ask for it but his tests are HARD. You have to think critically, just studying his lecture notes and homework won't quite be enough. You have to really think outside the box.
Be prepared to study. I took this class along with other challenging classes and my grade suffered because of it. In order to do well you need the time to study the concepts and math inside and out. Quizzes reflect the hw well. Tests are extremely difficult (85% of your grade as well). Your grade on the final can replace your lowest test score.
The most stressful class I've ever taken, Prof. Maddox really makes you work for the grade you want. 3 tests + the final is worth 85% of your grade, the rest comes from lab and quizzes. Very generous on time for tests and quizzes. A funny, friendly, and helpful professor. If I had to do it again, I'd gladly take him. Will miss him and his accent...
Maddox is a great professor but if you don't like a challenge or chemistry, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. 85% of your grade comes from exams and his exams are hard. I could have easily gotten an A with a different professor but I am glad I took him because he makes you really think about the material which is useful if you're continuing with chemistry.
He is beyond difficult and a super tough grader. Quizzes are from HW given, so make sure you do the HW to get 100% on quizzes. Exams are soo difficult! He said it before that he will twists questions and that'll confuse you. So know your concepts really well. Would not recommend taking this class if you are taking other science classes.
Maddox is an amazing professor who is always there to help you understand concepts. However, his class is extremely difficult. I highly recommend taking CHEM310 before. Tests and finals make up 85% of the total grade. Homework is not mandatory but really helps a lot. You really have to work for a good grade in this class. Several students dropped.
He knows his stuff. Great professor, but he isn't my kind of style. Doesn't require HW, but you'll fail if you don't do it. Lectures are fast paced and spends little time ensuring everyone understands. You must go to him if you need help. The prof everyone warned you about. Even though I wouldn't take him again, he's knowledgeable and respectable.
Professor Maddox is an amazing teacher. He knows his stuff and explain it well. You have to do homework to prepare for the quizzes and exams. For this class you have to put in a lot of effort and time to get an A. I like the fact that he is really organized in terms of preparing for class, lab, and tests. Take him if you're a hardworking student.
What can I say? A Real Gym. I like his teaching style, and he is my favorite chem professor. Homework is not graded, but it is better to practice. No pre-labs, no formal labs. There are chapter quizzes and 3 mid term exams + Final. Don't hesitate to take him because he is a chill and nice man.
I would not recommend this class if your schedule is consistent with very tough classes if most I would just take this class by itself if you are wanting an A in the class, quizzes/test, labs/lab report, and exams/and finals are heavy on grading. Professor is amazing gives any clarifications on questions you have, really cares about your learning
Very easy to get behind in this class, which is what happened to me. However he is a great professor and gives study guide and homework which is based on the lecture. Quiz questions come from the homework sheets. Also he's really picky about work so make sure to show work clearly so as not to miss easy points.
This class is very very challenging but its definitely doable. Homework is not required but prepares you for the tests. Maddox is insanely smart and great one-on-one so be sure to take advantage of him. He is very funny and nice, a fantastic choice. Your grade entirely consists of tests/quizzes/lab reports to study hard, really hard.
Absolutely love Professor Maddox. Make sure to do the homework and take thorough notes and you'll do good. Tests/quizzes are all based on homework, practice problems, and lecture notes. He never gives anything that is never taught in class, and I feel like he is clear on what he expects of you. Super funny and nice guy, would take again if I could
Maddox is awesome professor but not my style. Most of your grade comes from exams and quizzes. Hes very strict on grading and offers no EC. Hes very knowledgeable and funny but this class is no joke
Professor Maddox is an insanely intelligent guy. Chem comes so easy to him that he doesnt always explain things in a way thats understandable to someone still learning chem. His tests are literally the entirety of your grade so if you do bad on those you do bad in the class. Really nice guy but his teaching style was definitely not for me.
Maddox was one of the worst professors I've ever taken. Half of my spring 2019 class failed, there were maybe a hand full of A's but most of the people who did pass did so with a C. He is terrible at explaining things and there are no practice exams. When you go to him to ask a question he will talk to you as if you are stupid.
Don't get me wrong, this is NOT an easy class. But Prof. Maddox is an incredible professor. He makes himself available to his students and gives great feedback and is a great teacher overall. I wish I could take him for all of my chemistry classes. As he cares a lot more about teaching his students concepts than other professors do.
"He is beyond difficult and a super tough grader. Quizzes are from HW given, so make sure you do the HW to get 100% on quizzes. Exams are soo difficult! He said it before that he will twists questions and that'll confuse you. So know your concepts really well. Would not recommend taking this class if you are taking other science class. " I would s
the beginning started off pretty okay, but as the semester went on the topics became harder. He has weekly labs(purchased materials needed) and bi-weekly quizzes, that are counted towards your grade. His exams are SO HARD, where examples from hw or quizzes dont even compare or help. If u decide to take this class, best of luck to you! study hard!
It's a shame that some professors are really taking advantage of the COVID-19 situation. It's as if they know they are getting paid regardless, so they decide to do minimal work during this online transition. At times, it seems that Prof. Maddox is being lazy and could do a better job at teaching.
Honestly, It's a bit surprising that Prof. Maddox has such a high rating. He seems like a decent human being, but his material is SUPER DIFFICULT and he's a tough grader. There's def. pros and cons about prof. maddox, but as of right now there are more cons than pros. Not a fan of Prof. Maddox, but mostly because of his grading style.
"You wouldn't want a doctor who got an A for effort." This is true. But his "A" students would be "A" students anywhere. His strict grading philosophy does mean that your grade accurately reflects your understanding. But the best professors are able to bring out the latent potential of their students; he mostly just recognizes talent.
Prof. Maddox does not teach well. He may know a lot about chemistry, but that doesn't make him a good teacher. Having the ability to teach well is more than just knowing a lot about the subject, it's about ensuring that the student understands the material and presenting concepts in such a way so the student will understand.
Lectures are really lengthy (usually 1hr+) and they were prerecorded. I honestly believe he is just reusing everything from last semester and is not giving any effort to change the style he teaches. I feel like I have to teach myself everything. Quizzes are changed questions from homework. Exams are extremely difficult and does not relate to hw.
Exams are HARD! Nothing like the text book or lectures. Way too difficult
Threw 1hr+ recorded lectures at us and expected us to learn by ourselves. The labs are difficult to do without discussing with classmates. Quizzes are basically from homework, which weren't too bad. Exams are EXTREMELY difficult and our class averages were C's or D's AFTER THE CURVE.
Great professor. Definitely a tough class, but the lectures are super helpful and he goes through many problems in the homework which are very similar to the quizzes. I recommend watching the lectures in 1.5x or 1.25x speed since they are pretty long (45-60min) and he can talk a bit slow. Exams essentially are 70% of your grade, so be prepared.
Doesn't bombard you with work but is a tough grader. It's not an easy class but he is easily accessible, many office hours, no EC but curves all tests.
Absolutely loved Prof Maddox's class! Everything was super organized and grades came back in a timely manner with feedback. He was super helpful and always available to answer questions or go over things. Definitely be prepared to study - it's a fun but challenging class.
Great professor. He is a tough, but fair grader; he does not like to give out perfect scores, but is otherwise generally generous with points. Most of the points in the class are from curved exams. I'd give him a 5/5, but in his own words "then you think you have nothing to improve on".
Not expected to show for lecture but help a lot. He doesnt have you submit the homework but is crucial to chapter quizzes. Exams are concept based, grades hard. I didn't always like the way he graded for exams because if he asks you to explain you better give a well thought out paragraph and you might get 4/5 points. Great sense of humor.
Do not take! Midterm class averages were C's and D's, even after the curve! Staff complaint forms were filed. Partial credit is also a joke. Don't be fooled by his 4.3 stars. Most CHEM 401 ratings are 1 star. He's the worst prof I've ever had. I don't say that lightly. You've been warned. Take Alexandr Ishchuk at FLC instead. He's respected
Dr. Maddox is amazing! He makes the class so easy and walks you through everything step by step. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and is very talkative and funny. I promise that you will have a great time in this class. He does not make it boring and will listen to any complaints and go with what the majority wants. TAKE HIM!!
good sense of humor and fun teacher, but tests can be difficult, other than that really good class
Be prepared to swamped with lengthy lab reports, no extra credit, limited office hours, and heavily weighted exams. Brush up on chem 400 prior to the start date, don't miss any lectures and read the book. Homework is of no point value. Quizzes almost every week. Exams are tricky and do not reflect practice questions.
Great at explaining things simply. Happy to answer questions, and very helpful in lab. Only criticism is that he doesn't offer much advice on preparing for exams(they're mostly concept based). Also dont take notes by hand, its impossible to keep up with the slides. Save yourself the trouble, and print out the lecture slides. IMO way easier than 400
We are in week 8 of this class & right off the bat I knew that independent study is more useful than his lectures. He teaches in an advanced setting where a strong understanding of everything is necessary. He grades exams strictly due to his specific expectations. There are weekly speed drills, chapter quizzes, and three exams.
Do not believe the reviews on this page. This class was extremely difficult. A majority of people in this class have had to retake. Tests are very hard and do not mirror previous work. (Trick questions) There is a quiz almost every lab period. You are graded solely on quizzes, tests and lab. Talks way too fast in lecture, have to teach yourself.
HWK isn't required, but necessary for studying for Ch quizzes. Attendance is not mandatory for lectures but is required for labs. Weekly speed drills & Ch quizzes in lab, in addition to exams for 2-3 CH at a time. This class requires lots of time and dedication to regular studying. Must have a STRONG foundation and understanding of Chem 400.
His grading and tests are all really fair and I found they reflect your understanding of the material quite well. Do keep in mind this class is a lot of units so expect to spend a lot of time reviewing the lecture slides, doing practice problems, and memorizing flash cards. The lecture slides are definitely the most important thing to review.
Professor Maddox's teaching style is poor, with poor feedback, random grading, and hard tests. Quizzes and Exam are difficult to study, and he expects students to know everything like a teacher. He is too strict for no good reason, making it unsuitable for students seeking help. Instead, seek a professor who actually helps students.
Professor Maddox's chemistry class is a nightmare due to his unclear grading policies, lack of feedback on assignments, and random changes in criteria. It appears that he lacks genuine desire to support students in their studies. He drops one midterm. Even then its impossible to get a decent grade from the other two midterms he gives.
Professor Maddox's high standards comes from where he belongs, in England. He demands memorizing definitions and answering quizzes, despite no homework due. The explanation questions on exams are there so you can answer those as if you're the professor teaching a student. It is advisable to find a more capable and committed professor
This class was disappointing due to his lack of attention, confusing grading, and difficult tests. Quizzes and Exams were random and hard to study, and he expected students to know everything already. The class was too strict, with majority of the class being filled with retake students. He also showed an attitude every time a question was asked.
Despite 20 years of experience and a PhD, he is disappointing due to his lack of teaching skills, lack of assistance, and difficult exams. His credentials are questioned, as hsi ability to effectively teach material is lacking, leaving students to teach themselves. Majority of the time you will be teaching everything to yourself. AVOID HIM!
Professor Maddox, despite his Oxford degree, struggles to effectively teach this course due to his high standards and extremely difficult exams. This resulted in low pass rates and negatively impacts your course grade, affecting academic success and also impacting your other course grades for the semester.
Maddox give LOT of homework is not graded but necessary for weekly chapter quizzes. He also gives practice speed drills to do at home for practice (mini quizzes) which take 2-3 hours for only 6 questions. You will staring at the screen wondering what u did wrong! Practice speed drills r to prepare for the actual speed drill in class that is timed.
Lot of independent learning, this prof would read off power-point slides. Very test heavy, timed speed drills before lab that are barely worth any points, it felt impossible to do good on his exams even after hours of studying. Most of the students in his class were back a second time to try and pass since he reuses all the same papers.
The amount of anxiety this class gave me was insane. HMWK for chapters are given but not for a grade, they vary from 1-40 problems, and then he picks 5-6 of them to quiz you on. Speed drill quizzes everyday, worth no points. Exams that are so difficult, this prof is such a test/quiz lover, he even quizzes you on lab data analysis. it's a no for me.
I can tell by reading these recent reviews that a lot of people are not serious about their scientific carrers. Prof. Maddox is a great professor who is very knowledgeable and well-spoken. Although his course structure was by no means easy, it set you up to actually study hard, gave you the time to do so. Reccomend if you want to learn and grow.
EXAMS ARE CONCEPT BASED QUIZZES ARE BASED ON THE MATH
Professor Maddox's class is quite challenging, with difficult exams and quizzes. Though the material is well-covered, his teaching style can be rigid. I found Unstuck study really helpful for preparing, alongside the textbook.
CHEM 401 is a difficult class but Professor Maddox prepares students well. The class is test heavy, (quizzes, midterms, and the final make up 80% of the grade) but the lowest midterm is dropped. Maddox is especially helpful during office hours, and will answer any questions in detail. He is also caring and has a witty and sarcastic sense of humor.
