Love the class. Very easy and clear to understand. I really like it.
A great class, but it is not easy. Plenty of work is required, but you learn a lot and it is very intersting.
Great teacher, very passionate about geography. Genuinly cares about his students. Who wouldn't love the geography of Halloween and Valentines day?
I loved the class!
Greatest non-El Ed professor teaching an El Ed class.
Very hard class to keep up with, but awesome teacher and really cares.
He is the best teacher I have had! Take his class!!!
He has been the BEST teacher I have had so far! I loved the class and the content. I learned so much and as long as you take good notes and study them well for the tests you will do great in the class. I seriously contemplated nominating him for best professor of the year! Oh I took the ElEd class from him. I got an A w/o using the book.
This was my favorite class! The content is so interesting and he does an amazing job at teaching it. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met and definantly one of the best teachers I have ever had. I would take this class every semester if i could.
GREAT TEACHER!! He is worth whatever BYU-I pays him, plus more!!
This is my 3rd class from Madsen and he's great he knows his stuff and is always willing to help. I always feel comfortable. By FAR the best teacher in the geog department. No dumb pointless assignments. Encourages questions and answers them. Prompt with grading assignments. AWESOME!
True, Madsen deserves a raise he's so great. Smart and funny and willing to help you get the best grades. I have nothing but great things to say about him!
I'm a business major, and only took the class to fullfill a general, but loved it. No book was required, and all of the test answers were straight from the lecture. I took the 3 hour night class and we got out at least an hour early every week. It wasn't just an easy class however, I learned a ton, and actually enjoyed class each week.
Great teacher. Was a little worried at the beginning of the semester about how much the tests are worth in that class, but they really are not bad at all if you go to class. He is very funny and explains things very well. Highly recommend him.
Excellent teacher. Workload was reasonable and I learned a lot.
Bro. Madsen is so awesome! He does not mark attendance, but everything on the tests is talked about in class, so I would def. recommend you go. He makes lectures fun and interesting. He is funny and cute. Too bad he is married with five kids. :( haha
Bro. Madsen is one of the best teachers I've had. He is really funny and he makes the lectures fun and enjoyable. I really looked forward to going to his class this semester. His tests are not bad at all if you pay attention in class and take notes. I would highly recommend him :)
This class was a joke. He has students teach for a month and a half while he sits in the back with his beloved timer. Make sure you use the "image off" on the podium when you are done with your presentation, he has OCD, in lots of ways. When quizzes are given, he will usually say the first question, at least 8 times in 8 different ways. Ugh.
I just had to fulfill a general, but loved Bro Madsen. He teaches and does lessons the right way - he wants you to understand it. No textbook required - everything is talked about in class; Take Notes. I thoroughly enjoyed the class. And if you can make someone love both a lab & class from 5:45 till 10, you know they are good. Wonderful teacher
Madsen is such an amazing teacher! He is so passionate about Geography, and it's hard not to have that passion sort-of rub off on you. If you go to class and take good notes, you'll be just fine!
Decent teacher, long winded sometimes.
lots of multiple choice points. easy to listen to and stay interested.
I loved Brother Madsen's class, it was super interesting and he is entertaining as well. I highly reccomend it!
Really interesting. You have to take notes. Life will be a lot easier for you if you just go to class. Make sure your on time! I really like his teaching style. Lots of good information and ideas for teaching Geography
This class is amazing! He doesn't make you get a textbook, just a work book. Pay attention in class, if you take good notes you will pass his two tests. Study for the map quizes and don't be late. I learned a lot that I have been able to apply in different classes too
Brother Madsen is THE BEST. Everything is so clear in what he expects. He is strict on his policies, but as long as you attend all of his classes and take good notes, you will do well on the tests.
He's great. The assignments are pretty easy. Always attend class and take good notes because that's how you'll learn the information for the two tests, each worth 25% of your grade. If you do that, the tests are not difficult.
He is by far the best teacher at BYUI. He is extremly organized, and his assignments make sense. It is easy to do well in his class, but you will learn a ton. He is very excited about what he teaches and has a great understanding of the material. This 90 min class seems shorter than all of my other classes. He is fantastic!
Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go to class and take really good notes you will fail. If you go to class you will learn a lot, he travels a ton so he always has fun stories to share. He has been my favorite teacher so far at BYUI.
Go to class every time. Take good notes on what he is teaching and you will get an easy A. He does mapping packets every week--which I loved. You have two assignments, two tests, and one very easy presentation. His tests come from the notes--easy format. Great teacher, he loves what he teaches. The class is very interesting, and you actually learn.
Great class, keeps you interested the whole time! Doesnt grade attendance but if you want an A go to class. Since there is no textbook, class notes are super important! Fun teacher and you will learn a lot about this wonderful world!
Bro Madsen is very cool, he keeps you interested and you learn all the information without having to cram for the test and things. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
I LOVE him! He made me really love going to his class and learn more! His test aren't hard either if you write all the notes and study them. I made a couple 100s on some map tests and it was so easy. Take Him!
I love Bro. Madsen! He is quirky and fun, but also a really good teacher. Be sure to attend class if you want an A, be sure to attend class. His tests are based off notes you take in class because there is no textbook. One of my favorite teachers ever! You will love this class!
absolutely a GREAT teacher. No textbook, tests based off notes taken in class. GO to class if you want an A. if you miss a class, get notes from someone in class. Fun teacher, makes class interesting. Willing to work with students. Highly recommend him!
He is amazing!! Best class I have taken at BYU-Idaho so far. Every day I wanted to sit in there and learn more. He has such a great way of teaching and he loves each student so much. He is super smart and funny too.
I absolutely loved this class! I usually dislike Geography, but I looked forward to coming to this class. Brother Madsen is an incredible teacher! I learned so much in his class. The work load is pretty moderate, but I loved every part of it. I loved this class! I learned so much!
I loved going to his class. He loves every subject he touches in class. I highly recommend it.
Brother Madsen is my favorite teacher! i have never seen someone with so much passion about teaching and learning. He really knows the information and is trying to help you work on becoming a successful teacher. I would love to take his class again! i HIGHLY recommend taking a class from him. i loved going and enjoyed learning he made it soexciting
Brother Madsen is such an amazing teacher! He really knows what he is talking about and he loves it so much, it is inspiring. He also has an 80s music quiz everyday! He is so awesome! Everyone should take his class because they will benefit greatly from it!
BEST TEACHER EVER! HE IS SO FUNNY!
He makes class so fun and interesting. one of the few professors I have had that knows the names of everyone in the class. take good notes and you'll do great on the exams. His golden tickets & 80's songs of the day are fun. He's a good example of how I want to teach.
Good teacher but really hard tests. They are over two months of lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but go or you are screwed!!
Fantastic course and instructor. Take thorough notes during class! Very fun class. Study well for tests and pay attention in class.
It's easy to stay focused in his class because he is easily one of the finest professors on campus. Make sure you come to class every day because the tests are all on the content you learn in class.
Brother Madsen is an amazing teacher! His lectures are easy to sit though and he's very entertaining. He is so willing to help you pass the class if you put your part into it. In order to pass the class attendance is a must! The midterm and final are easy but only if you take good notes on EVERYTHING he covers in class and review them. You wont regret taking his class!
Brother Madsen was my favorite teacher. He is excellent at explaining material, and his lectures were actually really interesting. He's a really funny teacher and makes it easy to understand the material and what is expected of you (which isn't much) He was by far the BEST teacher I've ever had! I would take another class from him in a heart beat!
Long, comprehensive, heavily weighted tests. Stereotypical memorization of states, capitals, countries, etc. The class is kind of an insult to actual teachers of geography. Tricky quiztest questions - tries to catch you with answer options that have similar spelling, even though a monkey would know the actual answer. Sad that he's the only option.
An interesting lecturer does not equal a good teacher. He does not believe everyone should get an "A" and plans his class accordingly. Trick questions on map quizzes, ex: "TaiwanThailand", "AustriaAustralia". Write down everything. Even an unimportant story will have a test question. Sets his students up to fail instead of learn. WORST at BYUI
2 major unit tests, 1 @ midterm and 1 @ finals. Each worth 25% of total grade. No study guide, just study your notes, though he makes you use paper because he doesn't allow laptops. Fall asleep in class? he'll stop the lesson and call you by name till you wake up. Sees you with a cell? call you by name. some test questions about himself... really?
Hands down best college professor I have ever had. We cover some tough material in the class but he teaches it so well. He will never put anything on the test that isnt discussed in class. He is funny, passionate and it he is truly an amazing teacher. Show up, participate, indulge in the discussions and youll be just fine. Super fair and reasonab
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Only 2 exams (based off of in-class info). Can't access power points online so it's important you're in class. You are graded off of participation (don't be afraid, it's very easy). That being said, he cares about you and your learning experience. Everything is easy to understand. If you study, you can get an A.
My course section had over 50 students, but Brother Madsen knew each of our names. He truly cares about his students. Entertaining lectures. You do have to work for your grade, but grading requirements are clear. Two exams make up a major portion of your grade and the content is from lectures, not a textbook. Attend every class!
Brother Madsen is a great teacher with a passion for what he teaches. His discussions are in depth and powerful. Class is optional, but you can't really get a good grade if you don't go.
One of my better teacher I have had. He teaches the content very clearly and makes it interesting. He has a good sense of humor and is good at remembering everyone's names.
Brother Madsen is my favorite teacher I've ever had. He understands geography so well and can really explain it in a way that you can understand. He will always encourage questions and go over concepts multiple times to make sure we get it. As long as you pay attention in class you'll do fine.
Your grade is based off your attendance. You show up, learn, and take the exams. He loved to get the class involved and encourages questions and participation.
Brother Madsen was one of my favorite professors. Don't ever miss class or show up late, this will be counted against you. Basically if you participate (highly encouraged), do the assignments, and take lots and lots of detailed notes, you will for sure get an A.
He is a good person, but his class structure is not very clear. You will have a quiz every week and sometimes 2. He is not clear on what he wants you to know for the exam and he is a tough grader. You will have two exams during this class and one presentation. Seriously even Brother Hansen at least tells you what you needed to know for the test.
Brother Madsen is my all time favorite teacher that I've ever had. He cares enough to learn all of his students names and wants you to succeed. He is very knowledgable and passionate about geography and makes it fun and exciting. He has a great sense of humor. I recommend his classes to everyone.
Really awesome professor! He got me interested and excited to have geography in my classroom. There is a lot of mapping and map quizzes, but he offers lots of different opportunities to receive extra credit. The class is easy and the lectures are awesome, be sure to take good notes though you will need them for the tests.
Brother Madsen is one of the best teachers I've ever had! His class is so easy. You show up, take notes, study the notes, you will definitely pass. I would take this class every semester if I could. Anyone who doesn't pass this class just plain and simple doesn't try. I got a 100% on all of my mapping quizzes.
He is an AMAZING professor. You will learn so much from him and class is never boring. Participation is not mandatory but if you don't go to class you fail, so go to class. Really study for his test (you take two). Studying Every day would be best so you aren't cramming--It's a lot of information.
Brother Madsen is such a great professor. He is very clear in what you need to do to succeed. He doesn't take attendance but you do a lot better on exams if you take good notes in class. He does lecture quite a bit, but he makes it fun and interesting. He is such a kind teacher, and truly wants all of us to do our best.
Two tests. 50% of your grade. The tests are based off of notes taken in class. But don't worry. You can't use your laptop. Also, don't talk, use your phone, are have fun in his class or he will stop his lecture. Worst class I have taken at BYUI. One of the worst professors I've encountered. Doesn't care about his students at all.
Worst teacher I've had at BYUI. Says day one that he doesn't want to give any A's or B's and sets his classroom as such. You have two tests that make most of your grade and there is no study guide. Tests are what you write down. But your not sure that what you write down is on the test because there's so much info. Has q's about his own life-gross
Brother Madsen was AMAZING. I would take any class from him just for the fun of it. You can tell he really cares about Geography, and he cares about you too. Participation is a big thing in his class, and so is attendance - even if it isn't graded. But you don't want to skip class anyway. Not only will you miss notes, but amazing lessons too.
Bro. Madsen is great!!! He is a really good teacher and I learned a lot in his class. He is nice and makes the class enjoyable. It is important that you go to class and take good notes because that's all you have to study for the tests. Don't be late to class a lot either because that is bad for your contribution score and affects your grade.
Loved Brother Madsen's class. He's a great teacher and makes class fun and interesting. Take good notes to prepare for the tests. If you skip just one day make sure you get all the notes you missed! Tests were a bit hard, but everything else was fun and easy.
I have taken 3 classes from Brother Madsen over the past 3 years. Geog 110, 320 & 350 .Each class is organized clearly with a course schedule. He is a fair grader and cares and gets to know each student. Bro Madsen inspires his students with his passion for Geography, If there were a Geography major here Brother Madsen would be converting us all.
Brother Madsen is such a great teacher! Participation is really important, and so is taking good notes. Brother Madsen makes this class engaging and fun and super interesting.
I love Brother Madsen so much. He is BY FAR my favorite professor. Any student that hates him did the following: did not come to class, did not study, or did not listen to him during class. He provides so many tools to help pass the class and does not sugar coat the difficulty of this course. Could write so much more but not enough space! Take him!
Brother Madsen has been my favorite teacher thus far. There is a fair amount of homework, and you need to pay attention in class. You also need to participate. No study guides on tests and there are map quizzes. Difficult to remember everything but Brother Madsen makes it all worth it. He is charismatic, caring, and makes for an enjoyable class.
Brother Madsen is very organized and lays out everything at the beginning of the course so you know what to expect. Being in class is very important to passing the tests. All of the tests are based off of the notes you take in class.
Go to every class and write down everything he says! He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is so nice and sets his expectations for you very clearly. There is no question about what he wants and how he wants it done. Your tests are basically your whole grade, but if you go to class and take notes you'll be great!!
I had Bro. Madsen for Geography 110. Although I didnt know much about basic geography, Brother Madsen has taught me so much in one semester. He makes class fun, yet very informative. If you never skip class, then you are more than likely to pass the class. The tests arent very difficult unless you miss a lot of class. Great teacher!
Brother Madsen's class was so much fun! I honestly looked forward to his class everyday. His class is very organized and that's one of the reasons why I loved it so much! All of the test content is taught in class, so attendance is important. He is a very good teacher and answers every question, so if you participate you will pass easily.
It is not mandatory to attend class, but his tests are based heavily off of material covered in class, so success relies on you attending class. The class is weighted very heavily toward exams and a research paper/presentation, so it would be beneficial to focus on getting good grades on those assignments.
Didn't really give much homework. But the stuff we did do was more challenging. That was good because there wasn't any busy work! He is really thoughtful about his lesson preparation and it shows. You can tell he loves what he's doing and will always make sure you're ready for what's coming. I feel I learned the most from him.
Brother Madsen is an amazing teacher! He is so passionate about what he is teaching & it makes you excited to learn Geography. He is strict with his policies, but if you follow his easy class rules you will love the class! Attendance is not mandatory, however if you don't go then you will miss all the content. So attendance is essential! Take him!
This was a class that I really enjoyed coming too. The course is pretty lecture heavy, but also super interesting. Tests can be a little challenging but if you take good notes you should be fine. Brother madsen also has a clear and easy to follow grading system and you always know what his expectations are for you as a student.
Easily one of my favorite professors! He is a fantastic teacher and also very kind and helpful. Attending class is very important! There's only two assignments plus weekly workbook chapters that aren't very hard. Tests are hard but only if you don't study. Overall, one of my favorite classes!
Brother Madsen was one of my favorite professors I have ever had! His lectures are amazing, and very interested. He likes participation, but doesn't make you feel like you have to if you are shy. Take good notes and study them frequently and you will do great on the assessments! Also map quizzes almost every week, but are very straightforward.
There are only two tests and they are entirely based on the lectures. The homework outside of class is minimal and easy. His lectures don't put you to sleep but you need to be one hundred percent engaged all the time. He speaks clearly and directly and his class isn't impossible if you put in the effort.
Bro. Madsen is a great instructor. The class is fun while also challenging. He makes this clear in class, but the exams can be hard. If you think you are already a good note-taker, think again! Attendance isn't taken, but if you miss a day then you are missing a chunk of the material for the exam. He is very charismatic and the homework is fine.
If you demonstrate to him that you want to do well, he is more than happy to help you be successful in his class! For notes, I suggest teaming up with one or more people to write up a doc with all the notes for each exam, it makes studying for the exam easier when you work as a team!
I took Brother Madsen for GEOG 320 and GEOG 350. He is very straightforward about what he expects from his students. He is a great teacher and a great guy. Very funny and competent.
I've never been good at geography and honestly Brother Madsen makes it fun to learn. I have ADHD and never seem to lose focus because of how interesting it is. Exams are a big chunk of your grade but overall I loved taking this class.
I took Brother Madsen a year ago over zoom, however I just wanted to get on here and say that he was an amazing professor for sure! Class was for an hour and a half twice a week and he made sure to keep us engaged. He was very knowledgable and was willing to work with you and help you understand things you were struggling with. I'd recommend him!
Brother Madsen is a great professor! You will definitely want to take notes in class. Everything on the test is gone over in class and if you review your notes you will pass! There is a participation score at the end of the semester, if you have good attendance and participate occasionally in class you'll do great.
I really like Brother Madsen and the way he teaches. He is very lecture heavy but he makes it interesting. His tests are hard though, and you have to take notes in class. Although he is a great guy, sometimes he does seem to like power, i.e. no phones in class, makes you watch long videos out of class for test that ends up only being for 1 question
Madsen is the best prof I've had at BYUI thus far. His lectures are very interesting and entertaining, and it is a very personalized class. Your grade comes from your 'participation' in class, 4 map quizzes on geography, and 3 exams. Madsen is very serious about '1 person speaking at a time' and a no phones policy. If you can handle this, its great
I loved taking Brother Madsen's geography lab! I was the only student in the class, so I got to know him very well. He was so caring and guided me through the material patiently. He gave excellent feedback and made sure I understood the material every time. He may not be able to show you as much attention, but I would 100% recommend his class!
Brother Madsen is one of my favorite professors here at BYU-Idaho. He knows the content and comes prepared every day to teach us. Take good notes and be ready to learn. I walked away learning so much! He doesn't require attendance, but you do have a contribution score and a lot of things said in class will be on the exams.
This professor is pretty straightforward but do take LOTS of notes. Pay attention during class because the little comments count.
Brother Madsen is very knowledgeable in the subject area and knows a lot, you can tell he loves it. You must come to class if you want to pass. The tests are hard but it's all based on in class lectures so pay attention and take notes! He grades tough on the map packets so be very accurate! Overall good teacher, tough class, but I learned a lot.
Brother Madsen was excellent! I learned so much in his class this past semester. There are 4 map quizzes and 10 workbook chapters. It is all worth it because it helps you in class. Participation is expected in class. Definitely would take this class again!
The exams and lectures are just a semester-long display of his ego. If you take any of the TESOL and Elementary Ed courses that teach about how to create valid, reliable, and accurate assessments, his exams are prime examples of what NOT to do. Very uninspiring class. He could have done a lot more to strengthen our testimonies, but it was a flop.
Brother Madsen knows his stuff and is really great at explaining things. Missing just one day is hard to catch back up which kind of sucks. He is also an insanely tough grader. I didn't get 100% on any single assignment and I'm a good student. Overall, Brother Madsen is a great professor and the class content is super interesting!
When it comes time to the exams, there can be a lot but if you do the readings and take notes in class you will be just fine. If you are a slow test taker, show up to class 15-20 minutes early and he will most likely let you get started so you have enough time :) make sure you know the countries instinctively for map quizzes because time is limited
Be prepared to take lots of notes and pay attention in class. Try to not miss a day otherwise you'll get behind. I liked the workbook chapters, they were very informative. His tests are difficult if you don't show up or participate, so make sure you're present so you can pass.
I honestly hated this class, and dreaded going to it. I think that he is a ridiculous grader and doesn't explain instructions clearly for student presentations. I think that it is absurd that the exams (2) are each 25% of our grade and everything else we do is 3%. The exams are the worst exams made that I have ever took.
Peculiar in the way he conducts things, it has to be his way only. He offers no extra credit assignments, no opportunities to improve your grade. His class felt like I was in the 1900s: no technology, no discussion, all on paper. His exams are what matter the most; they consist of 100 questions and are solely based on his lectures in class. Awful.
Organized, but doesn't offer enough resources to study and excel. It didn't seem like he wanted his students to succeed. There were no extra credit assignments. His exams are based solely on his long and unclear lectures in class. He is not specific about what will be on the exams. I wish there were more teachers who offered this class.
You are not allowed to do anything. You can't talk, you can't use technology, only a notebook to write your notes on. You sit for an hour and a half only to listen to him talk. His exams are what count the most in your grade; they consist of 100 questions and are on paper - super hard (based only on what he has shared in class).
Hated this class. He cares more about the two exams than the rest of your wok. Not fair. Not clear on his lectures. It is just him talking and talking.
I have As in every other class I've taken. The grading is extremely harsh. I misspelled a word on a map and he took off a point. I was right, but forgot a letter. 2 exams make up 50% of your grade! If you miss even one class, you're screwed. no notes on electronics. The class is for his ego, not our education. He's proud of his class averaging 70s.
I learned a great deal from him, and received a perfect score in the Geo/Anthro/Socio portion of my PRAXIS because of what he taught in class. He makes it clear at the beginning of the semester how to get good grades and be successful and he keeps to those expectations, meaning it is easy to be successful in his class.
Brother Madsen does a great job at explaining his expectations and rewarding the students who put in the work and show up to class regularly. This class was hands down my favorite geography class I have ever taken. He cares about what you have to say and you can feel his passion when he teaches. If I can take any of his classes again, I would.
His grade scale is crazy. He won't offer any study helps or guides for fear of absent students 'getting an advantage.' So, even if you come every day, there's no help, and when there is, the TA gives a review that is useless-2 exams are 50% of the grade. If you don't take perfect notes, including questions with subjective opinions, good luck.
Brother Madsen is very energetic and very passionate about his job. He is a bit tricky with his test which is hard because the two exams are half of your grade. No study guide, useless study sessions with the T.A and the test contains useless information that he randomly said in the class. I love the teacher and the subject but the course is awful.
