His class is the most BORING class I have ever taken. Talks too much. Will talk a topic to death. I'll write essays, and his comments will LITERALLY be longer than my essay itself. Helpful guy though.

His the best English professor I had ever have. Kind, smart, and his notes on the back of each of your draft is really really helpful. However, the class is a bit boring, but if you can live thru, you won't get a bad grade.

Remarkable Teacher. In my opinion, he teaches a very boring class, but he is in love with the subject. Along with his immense knowledge, he has great enthusiasm. He is hard to understand at first because he is so wordy and long-drawn, but it really shows his devotion to his students and the reading.

His class is somewhat boring and he is very redundant, but when you get around that he teaches the correct way to write a good paper. He'll write more then your actual paper for comments, but as long as you fix the problems it is easy to get an A.

if you are willing to do the work you will pass! he critiques papers very well and tells you what should be included in the paper. he grades fairly. However, he is a bit looney and will talk your head off. FYI, don't fall asleep or he will make a scene!!!!!

Dr. Mageean is an AMAZING prof. He knows his subject so well that sometimes he can't even speak as fast as he thinks. He will work diligently on EVERY paper submitted & if you visit him during office hours he will go even more in depth to help. He will give you the benefit of the doubt every time. A VERY interesting & brilliant man of letters.

If your're intelligent you'll use his genius to your advantage. If you take his class you will learn how to write while getting an A at the same time.

Take his class if you really love English. He reads everything you write and actually takes the time to comment on your work. He has a passion for English and he's one of my favorite professors ever.

This guy is amazing. He is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met. He is extremely supportive and passionate about what he does. I wish we had more profs like Michael Mageean in academia.

first let me start off by pointing this out... he is weird... very weird. but that doesnt size up to how smart he is. He is very good at teaching english and i would recommend him to anyone.

He is funny and smart(though he will go over the same things many times on different days). Most of points are on essays, if you have a piece of (s**t) then his comments will not help, but if you write a decent paper (B level) he will GIVE you the material to make it an A paper easily. Final is the only in-class essay. HE PLAYED GRUNDGE AT UCI! =p

Great teacher. take good notes in class and follow his instructor on how the essay should be written. It is very difficult to stay awake in his class very boring. Yes, it's an honors class, and it's very easy. you'd walk out of the classroom wondering what happened to the world 'coz it's freaking easy. i can say safely that >70% of the ppl got an A, if not an A+. I didnt lose a single point. go to office hours, ask for advise, the feedback is most likely longer than yr essay.

The class is SUPER EASY. Attendance is mandatory and he gets mad when people do not show up. He scolds people in front of the class and the lectures are boring (bring a magazine or something). The most brilliant professor I've ever had. You have to actually listen and work through your own resistances, and actually open yourself to a thing called LEARNING. It's rare that professors actually teach students how to think. That's what he's trying to do.

Helpful yes. Writes your essays for you. I did not really try hard on any of the essays and got B's. Put some more effort into it and you will get an A. Mageean is a great professor, very passionate in his approach. He wants to help everyone, which makes doing well in his class very easy. Limited amounts of reading are not tough and he will clarify in class. With a small amount of effort an A is inevitable.

I realized his expectation on writing the essays and research papers, so 6 essays and a final, only 1 essay is a B n final can be prepared b4 class. Got A in the class. Great prof. Very smart, structured, and helpful. A stickler for militant MLA-isms and academic consistency, but presents it as a palatable buffet of choices. Success in this class is directly proportional to what you are willing to put into it. If you look at the dreadful grammar of some of the negative comments below, that should speak volumes.

He is an overall acceptable professor. However he tends to ramble endlessly and repeat himself numerous times. But, if you attend daily and do your work, you can do well in the class. Be sure to address all of his comments on revisions of essays.

Overall, a good professor. He rambles A LOT which can be SUPER boring. His class is pretty much lecture 99% of the time. No quizzes & no tests. I got a B on EVERY single essay even when i thought i did great. Professor Mageean is really nice. He's the first professor I've met that REALLY reads essays. He also takes a lot of time(probably) to write REALLY helpful comments. If you alter your draft accordingly to his comments, you should be able to get an easy A. He also knows about EVERYTHING. So you get to pick your topic. However, he does ramble a lot.

I had him for Early British Lit and he is amazing. His classes are not always exhilarating, but his passion for literature is always very present. He often writes a full page response on returned papers to help improve your writing, and he does this for the whole class; he is EXTREMELY helpful and genuinely cares. I absolutely loved his class.

Class is usually very boring. His comments on papers can sometimes seem rude. Also feel like he's talking down to you. Other than that the class moved pretty slow and he grades easy.

I took him during the Summer and all our essays were on one topic. All the essays would eventually be turned into one huge essay that was around 12 pages long.

This class was completely chill, although most of the time class was extremely boring. He makes jokes here and there, to try and spice it up. He makes you do little portions of essays that eventually combine into one research paper. Even if u miss class he is very understanding and gives extra time to do work. Easy class, but it is beyond boring! The professor talks very fast and repeats himself so much! We spent like 2 weeks going over the same lecture over and over again, day after day.. it was torture. People actually stopped showing up to class LOL. Even tho his class is boring, Mageean is a nice professor & he is also very helpful.

He's a good professor, explains the material well, and doesn't try to make your life too difficult. If you put some effort into the class, you'll do fine. The essays aren't hard. He'll help you out a lot by giving you tons of feedback on all your essays. I can't say this was my favorite class, but, I've had much worse.

You don't need to buy the textbook because you can either find the reading online or he'll go over (very thoroughly) what the reading was about, so save your money. He explains the essays really clearly and makes you do an ungraded rough draft for every essay and gives comments with it so it's clear what he wants from your final draft.

If you can, you should definitely take his class! He's very helpful and he always provides feedback on your essays. His class can get really boring, however. Save yourself the money by not buying the book because it's really not necessary. He always goes in to detail about the topics being discussed.

I took Mageean's 1A & 1C. He is just a great professor. Even though the lectures were boring, you still learn a lot of writing technique. Grading fairly. He gives higher grade if you work hard on critical thinking. One thing that I appreciate Prof. Mageean is: he always gives good feedback to students. The first assignment is the most impressive.

Do not buy the stupid books, rent if you are a book person, I suggest making copies he makes you actually read. Overall, no real hw, grade made up of 6 papers which are moderately difficult but if you show up to class he goes over in great detail on how to do them, I recommend him for class, but prepare for super boring lectures.

Dr. Mageean is a laid back and also a very BORING professor. However, he does repeat himself over and over again he literally put me to sleep. Professor Mageean loves what he does. You can tell by how knowledgeable he is about literature. Although class may become boring from time to time, pay attention because you can use some of the critical points he lectures on and put them in your papers and he will be okay with that. I took him two semesters in a row and I would take again.

From the gate, it is Clear what he expects and how he grades. He gives GREAT feedback, so if you fail, you've failed yourself. I struggle with essays and am getting a solid B in the class. He makes things fun and actually teaches you whatever you don't know. He will answer questions you have. Just ask!

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat. Policy, Policy, Policy. Professor is very boring. He repeats himself over and over. However, it is beneficial if you are the type of person who needs material repeated. Does not respond to emails. Also he follows policy, so do not get caught with your phone; he will report you. Papers were easy. He gives great outlines.

Make sure you love to read and write if you're going to take this class; there will be a lot of it! He gives great critiques on essays and helps you expand your ideas. It'll help to talk to him about your essay topics and his comments. He is very detailed. He has a great reading list and is very informed! Took 4 classes w/ him and learned a lot!

Professor Mageean is a smart Professor that has a PHD from a UC school so his standards are high. Essays and grammar are hard for me, and he really has a ton of patience. I feel like I'm more equipped for USC now. Most Professors don't comment enough on papers, but he does. If you're trying to get into a good school take him, he'll prepare u!

Clear grading criteria, if you attend all classes, participate in discussions and score well on the quizzes, 10 quizzes, one on each reading topic, count 30% of grade. There are 2 critical essays and the midterm and final both have 2 timed essays each. The class sessions are mostly discussing student comments that are generated in small groups.

Although his lectures can be very tedious, he does not fail to express the significance behind everything he says. He provides great outlines that make essays easier, and he is very helpful if you decide to speak to him one on one. I really enjoyed the material we wrote about.

Weekly reading, weekly assignments, and three critical essays with three in-class essays. At first glance, you would think this professor is difficult. However, he grades easily and fairly and will write literal paragraphs on your paper full of feedback, thoughts, and criticism. He doesn't lecture, there is only discussion and group work.

He talks way too much. WAY TOO MUCH. He's also very rude and lashes out at people on his grading comments. I'm not particularly sensitive, but even I was thrown aback by his remarks. He is very rigid on his essay requirements, but doesn't give the best explanations. He basically just talks in circles for two hours. Save yourself a headache. PASS.

Ok let me be clear, yea theres a textbook but its for writing prompts, not instruction. Im writing this in 2020 and Im still thinking about what a great professor this was in 2016. That semester I got 2 Bs and an A. The tools he teaches you, to critically think, will really push you to see both sides of an argument.

Before I signed up for this class I was scared because of the ratings on here, but his class was the only section available. Honestly, he is not going to let you slip through the cracks a slide by. You have to work for your grade, but he is here to help you when you need it. I really enjoyed his class and would recommend him to my friends.

Professor Mageean gives really good feedbacks. He has high expectations on us, hence his gradings on essays may be rather harsh, but he also allows re-submissions for improved grades. He may not have a good memory due to his age, but he says "Good Afternoon! Welcome back to 11B!" to each one of us, every time when takes roll.

Mr. Mageean had lots of information to give in order for his student to understand the assignment. Most of the assignments were essays and editing colleague essays. Groupwork was mandatory and His grading is tuff, but he is willing to grade your work before turning in Canvas to get a better grade.

I don't really understand the bad reviews on here. This is my second time taking this professor because he is so helpful and honestly a kind, quirky guy who's excited to talk about his favorite books. His grading could be difficult, but that doesn't make him bad. Just gives his students a challenge. He answers all my questions and is kind to us!

The class is pretty much him rambling. Your grade consists of 6 essays, 4 are for a research paper of your choice, and easy exercises to go with them. If you have not written in awhile he reviews the basics and writing process. No test but, if you can't commit time to write essays don't take him. Pretty lenient, communicate or ask questions if any.

At first this cass appears to be quite challenging with the heavy reading and specific expectations that the professor has regarding your ideas. After a while, you begin to notice that he truly expects you to engage with each class and lean towards the ideas he approves of, as he thoroughly knows each reading. Always take his feedback!
