Primarily uses powerpoint for lecture. An MIT orthodox teaches first year Ph.D with clarity and encouragement. Key: INTUITION. Most exam questions are comp similar, and require intuition rather than KKT. Learn to think from early in the semester.
I'm taking his class now, and am annoyed with him. The first midterm was multiple choice...should be multiple choiceS, because you have to identify all the 5 answers as right or wrong. Avoid the class if this is new to you.
This professor took an interesting subject and bored us to death. His exams were ambiguous and even he couldn't figure out the right answers. He curved exams to a C! Very unfair - killed people on their final grades. Punishes for absences, but nothing if you attend every class. The worst!
Don't go into this class expecting clear cut answers. Class organized mainly around his lecture notes. Ppl had a lot of issues with the way he graded the exams (almost all true-false type questions). Unless you understand the way he thinks about the material, you're going to have a hard time.

big class, pretty interesting stuff.
Funny old man - interesting class
the exams' formats are decievingly hard. notes not very helpful, although lectures were interesting. be sure to do all the reading (which is not related at all to the lectures) to do ok in the class.
His exams were not too bad, but the lectures were torture. I never fall asleep in any of my classes, but he knocks you out within 5 mins of the lecture.
he is an awesome professor and tries really hard to make everything clear. i had absolutely no interest in econ prior to this class but am now including it in my major
Prof Manove is really funny(and nice!), well, at least he tries to be.He makes everything much easier to understand, and explains things much better than the textbook, which, I think although well written but somewhat unnecessarily complicated. I'd definitely recommend him. Just make sure you hate smoking as much as he does!
Prof. Manove really TRIES to be interesting but his lectures cant help but make you fall asleep. Not a hard class, drops lowest midterm. Questions straight from slides. This is an easy B, must work for A. Aplia is annoying. Slides are funny, but he is NOT. Easier then other EC101 professors.
His lectures are very dry, and he often goes into even drier tangents. Aplia is a pain, but it's a better resource than his slides. A lot of his exam questions (which can be much harder than Aplia or his lecture examples) come from the homework problems. A nice guy, but he did nothing to pique my interest in econ. TF's were much better.
Easiest class I've ever taken at this school. The kid who said you have to work for an A is so wrong. Half of the test questions come from a sample test he posts online! Got 100 on all exams without opening the book. Cool guy too. His voice puts you to sleep, but he is an interesting person. If you want an A, take this class.
Prof. Manove really helps you succeed in his class if you put the effort into it. For example, he gives one question pop quizzes in class and you start with an 80% just for being in class that day and if you get the question right you get 100.It definitely helps if you get a good TA for your discussion section, so try to switch into the best one.
Extremely dry & monotonous in his lectures -- his voice lulls you to sleep. He goes off on odd tangents & uses cruddy real-word examples to illustrate his points. The discussion sections are just as bad; they're completely useless. I really enjoyed taking economics in high school, but Manove killed any interest I had in it.
Professor Manove is a very very nice man. He tries to make everything very clear. His lectures are boring, but he explains everything very well. If you want an A, do the reading, go to lecture, and do the aplia problems. this class is not difficult.
He is unbelievably easy and tries to save as many of his students as possible. All you have to do to get an A is Aplia hw (you actually need text book sometimes but I highly recommend the textbook in Aplia since I only use it to find any material that I don't quite understand, Crtl + F and you are all set) and test preps.
Great Professor, kept my interest, I didn't mind going to class. Unfortunately, I had a bad TF who really didn't do a good job further explaining the concepts. Its an okay class if you just need to fulfill a requirement. He gives pop quizzes to make sure you go to class. DONT FORGET ABOUT APLIA!
He's a very very nice man. Has a funny dry humor that makes it more interesting to learn econ which isn't very interesting. He has very good slides and they're always full of pictures. He's also extremely nice and wants everyone to do well. I wish he taught macro.
Interesting class, comments that say otherwise are mostly ditzy girls. Aplia is easy but only 10% of grade, tests are moderate difficulty but curved. TA (Martino) was a nice guy - I think, never really understood anything he said
Easy course, nice teacher, good examples to illustrate his point in lectures. However, there's a often discrepancies between the things on the lecture slides and textbook, which causes confusion to students.
You learned stuff in class, but a lot of people fell asleep and by the end you just want to run out of there.
What a goofball... He has strange anecdotes about economics and his life and is somewhat absent-minded. He's kind of a socialist--all about government control and distributing wealth fairly... Comes through in his lectures. It's kind of funny, though. This class was extremely easy, even more so than most econ classes.
This class was extremely easy. Aplia was more difficult than the exams. If you go to class and review the slides, the exams will be a piece of cake. My TA sucked, however, and I absolutely dreaded the discussion every week.
i love him. it makes me kind of happy to have his class before my others, bc he always manages to make me laugh. hes a little nuts haha. but the class is very eary requires the bare minimum effort
Prof. Manove is a great guy, I find his lectures very useful. The exams are okay not that hard, all you have to do is to study your lecture notes carefully and go through important parts of the chapters in the textbook.
Definitely TAKE THIS CLASS! Michael is really funny and his exams are easy multiple choice. It requires more work than other microcon classes but is definitely worth it!
PROS: While the lectures can be a little dry, he explains the material thoroughly, and the exams and problem sets are fairly straightforward and related to lecture. CONS: The TFs are generally less than helpful in discussions (which are required) and at points, Manove strays from the topic, but he's still amusing (helps break the tedium).
MANOVE IS AMAAAAZING! he's SO funny, i love him! drawbacks: MUST show up on time (he starts the class with a "clicker question", 10 pts for right answer, 7 pts for wrng, 0 for no answer). aplia is a little tough and time consumer but ive gotten no lower than a 90 (they just take time). all in all, his lectures are entertaining and hes easy so TAKE!
Manove is really good. I'm an international student, I wasn't sure how my teachers would be, coming to America, however, Manove was brilliant. A little old and slow, however, he made me very interested in Economics, and I'm getting a good grade. Just take notes, do aplia on time, come to class 10 minutes early, you'll get an A for sure :)
Manove tries hard to be funny but his monotone voice makes it nearly impossible. Lectures were extremely boring, but the workload was manageable. Go to lecture, read, and study and you'll do well. He scales the tests and is a fair grader but honestly the subject is just horriffic
I am a science major and this class made me realize how much I hate business. He was really easy but boringggg. They final this year was surprisingly rough.
His powerpoint is very helpful!! He is a nice professor, and he would like to save as many students as possible. Try your best. A is not hard, if you study!!!
Wonderful pro.I transfered to the class at the very last minute so I didn't do very well on the first exam. Useful and easy thing even for me(took it for requirement). Whether u r majoring in Econ, recommend him! ONLY HIM!!(seems that he teaches every other year, rare)
Very quirky guy. His slides were silly but helpful. He uses a clicker and gives in-class questions, so attendance is mandatory. His tests are pretty easy. I got a B but I didn't try very hard. Only downside is the subject, which can be pretty dull sometimes.
His lectures can be somewhat dry but he has a great sense of humor and jokes around a lot. There are clicker questions during his class so its necessary that you be there. The tests are straight forward as he gives practice tests that help. Overall a pretty decent course
awesome
Prof. Manove is great! He is really organized and thorough. Always attend lecture because clicker questions count as your attendance. Homework on the Aplia website is easy. Be sure to study for midterms, but he provides practice exams that help alot. Go to his office hours. He's very generous with grading procedures. Overall a great professor!!
Great professor, very reachable. Dropping by during office hours will help you lots. Read the book do aplia, do the clicker, take notes. Hard for those who just took econ but managable. Try hard and a B won't be too hard to get. however some parts of the lectures are confusing..but i like him :)
Awesomest professor in BU. He uses his wittiness and sarcasm to explain the concepts and it works really well. Although the topics may not be interesting, his jokes make up for it. Pay attention in lectures and study for tests and you will do will in this class.
I personally like economics, but he managed to make it boring. He has a tendency to go on tangents, often about his daughter's liking for milk. If he spent more time focusing on the actual subject material and expected students to talk to him if they didn't understand instead of pounding down countless examples, it would be a much better class.
I took EC 101 with Professor Manove during my Freshman year. He is a great professor who explains everything clearly. His tests are relatively easy, and his slide shows are SUPER helpful when you are reviewing for the exams. Recommended.
Professor Manove is a phenomenal lecturer. His presentations are both interesting and humorous and he undoubtedly loves what he teaches. While his homework was considerably excessive for an introductory class, his tests were very easy and conceptual. I found that the majority of students were SMG (required) so be weary of that when reading comments
A great teacher, a little monotone, but a nice sense of humor. Do the homework, keep up with reading, and his class is a piece of cake!
Great guy. Sometimes a bit confusing. But class isn't really hard at all.
BE AWAKE FOR HIS CLASS. if you're engaged he's HILARIOUS. his jokes are very subtle..its like watching an episode of the office! his lectures are clear and easy to follow. his tests are fair and so are online homework. just make sure you're awake because he is a little monotone. i definitely recommend him!!!!!
Boring class, many people fell asleep. Attendance is mandatory. Could get through the material in half the time but he makes sure to have you in class for the full scheduled time. Aplia is useless and there are always some odd worded questions on the exam. Overall an easy course.
Overall he's a good teach with a good sense of humour. I had taken Micro before so this was more of a refresher course so a bit easier. However do keep up with readings and assignments as exams reflect those kinds of questions, I didn't do well on the first exam because I hadn't done so. Lectures are clear but he is not the most approachable.
Possibly the best professor I had at BU. I took this class as a senior and it was great! Not a topic I'm interested in but Manove made it interesting. He explained things in multiple different ways to ensure the topics were as clear to students as possible. Funny, and helpful. Highly recommended!
Manove is a great professor! His slides can be a bit confusing, but he genuinely cares about his students and really encourages going to office hours and asking questions. He makes funny jokes and it easy to listen to.
Awesome professor. Explains microeconomic principles simply with clever examples
This class was very easy and very clear. His voice can occasionally drone on but if you really listen he throws in little jokes and really clarifies the material. Even if you can't understand economics at all he does a great job of breaking it down. Lectures are super helpful when it comes to tests, which in general are pretty easy.
He was a good teacher. His lectures usually dragged on, though. His tests were pretty easy. No need to study that much. A quick look-over the night before. As a student who is not in SMG, but is taking this because of a requirement for Health Science, I thought this teacher was perfect (especially after hearing about other professors). So take him!
His lectures are very boring, it's a self-study course. The online textbook is required for the weekly HW assignments, but not all of the HW content are in exams. The exams cover all of the lecture slides, so study them THOROUGHLY and you'll do great. His tests aren't actually that hard, but you're not going to get 100s without studying.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN HELP IT!! Extremely difficult to understand what he is saying half the time and very very very boring lecturer. Not very helpful in office hours and kinda scary in person and the principles center that he raves about wasn't helpful either. If u r stuck with him, get a tutor from the start from ERC
The power points are basically everything he said in class. He is very clear and if you study the tests aren't hard. He is very monotonic, lectures seem to take forever (but are mandatory). He only talks about his daughter and milk. Reading of the online book is useless but you still have to pay for it in order to do the weekly homework.
His class seemed good at the beginning, but as the semester passed the lectures felt longer. He's very monotone but does explain this in a decent way. He posts his lecture slides online, which was helpful. Mandatory attendance. Tests are oddly worded. Average professor.
He does what he can with a really boring subject, but he's got a monotonous tone that makes you want to fall asleep. The challenge is paying attention in the class. Do that and you'll pass. Got a nice sense of humor too.
This class I found the be enjoyable. The final was a pain and I heard many people struggled. Those in SMG said that SM131 concepts mix and overlap. But remember it is an economics course. Clicker is mandatory: BUY the MOBILE clicker, it displays the question and if ur running late, or sick, you can answer questions.
Don't bother with his office hours. Pretty useless. His exams are very oddly worded and highly confusing which makes them difficult Lectures are very boring Simple concepts on slides but very detailed on exams
Manove explains concepts clearly - found the course somewhat challenging only because I am a science major. Only need the online textbook for online homework assignments - not useful for exams at all. Exams are 100% lecture based so go to lecture and study the slides well. Discussion is only useful if you have a good TA.
The only thing I have to say is, whether you're an econ major or not, you should take his class. He's an interesting, funny and easy to understand teacher. If you go to class of course.
Loved him!
He explains everything very slowly and clearly (but sometimes gets boring). Doing the readings is only necessary for the online quizzes which are not exactly correlated with lectures. Examinations are based on lectures, not readings. Posts slides online. He will drop one of the two midterms grades if it will improve your final grade.
I took this professor during my first semester and I had a great time. Attendance is NECESSARY, tests are on topics covered during lectures that may not be found in the book (the book is useless for this course). The homework is not that bad and it takes around 30min/1hour to do every week. I recommend him!! Tests are easy!!
Online quizzes once a week on material that isn't on the midterms/finals/lectures. The midterms and finals are solely based on his lectures. Definitely not the worst teacher out there, he gets the job done.
Manove is such a clear professor. He explains hard concepts in the best way possible. I would love to have him again. This class is definitely passable if you go to class.
Brilliant guy (MIT and Harvard graduate); possibly a god of microeconomic theory; very experienced professor and shows it through his brilliance and explaining very abstract concepts though concrete examples; easy A
I'm not a fan of economics, so maybe that is why I hated his lectures so much. He is extremely boring and is generally difficult to follow. Lots of note taking, but he does drop your lowest exam.
A good professor. However, exams are going harder as the class progresses. He uses his own ppt to make the concept clear. The examples are actually good for explaining the concept, but they are hard for international student to understand. Almost no textbook use. The class is a little boring and his voice is very low!! Even though with Microphone
His exams are very tough and I will never take his class any more!!!!!!!!!!!
final was some crazy halo BS
Ok but he gives v. specific examples for concepts so if you don't understand them then ur screwed. Also, it's very difficult to listen to him talk the entire time b/c he's very monotonous, tests are v. hard and there's not a lot of ways to make up for bad grades.
He explains those concepts clearly for the most time and provides sufficient life-related examples. Lectures are generally good but long. Weekly online quiz sets include 15-26 problems but are somehow irrelated to lecture contents and relatively difficult. Two midterms and one final in a semester, with practice exams. Be ready to take hard exams.
Ugh... this class is tragic. I took it out of interest, what a mistake. Did decent on the tests, but my grade doesn't reflect that. The tests go as follows: easy, mediocre, hard. The homework barely correlates to the class but its actually more important than it seems... so spend the $125 to do it. Also, participate in discussion.
Aight here's the deal: this class is super easy if you aren't an idiot. I showed up to lecture and took really good notes and dropped As on the midterms and like 30pt above average on the final. Michael is hilarious and goofy, but delivers with a solid class. The homework is on MyEconLab and you are given two attempts, so you can get 100s errytime.
BU econ professors aren't known for their fabulous teaching skills; Manove neither broke or fulfilled this belief. The first mid-term he gave of the year was ridiculously easy but the tests progressively got harder and the final was horrific (it's worth 50% of one's grade). Spend the ridiculous amount on the online txtbook- the answers right there
Professor Manove is a good lecturer, however his lectures seem to long and get boring, and too much criteria is covered in 90 minutes. The class is still pretty good, because all EC101 classes tend to be like that. The first two exams are pretty easy, the final exam was pretty hard though. He doesn't upload all the content from his slides.
Manove.... he makes lecture really boring, it is true, he is monotonous. The midterms are easy, and if you participate in discussions you gain 10 easy points, but the final is tough. Trust me the book is useless. Learn the slides well, understand each concept and you can get an A, but if you try to learn it in one night like me, expect the worse
Guy's lectures are dryer than the sahara desert. Drones on and on and on. Odd obsession with Tom Cruise. Overall just an annoying, terrible professor
Wondering if I should explore the Econ field, I took this class. Professor Manove did not disappoint. His jokes are dry (in the best way possible), his lectures are long, but you can clearly tell that he cares about the subject. He's such a smart guy. And my favorable experience in his class has inspired me to officially commit and switch majors.
Very difficult class. Lectures were not clear and the homework/exams were very difficult. Exams often contained material not covered in lecture.
Monove lectures are long but as long as you understand the material he covers in lectures you can easily get an A on exams. He'll often throw in bonus points for the exam as well if the average isn't too good. Homework assigned was stupid but all of the answers are in the textbook. Discussions are also required and usually a huge waste of time.
His lectures are absolutely painful. The most monotone man I've ever heard in my life. He makes economics even more confusing than it already is. I beg of you, for your own sake, do not take this class.
Good teacher for EC101. He is a funny old man
Pay attention and take notes by hand in class and you will get an A. Slightly monotone voice but nothing terrible, and he's a nice and funny guy who clearly cares a lot about his field. I recommend him, just make sure you pay attention because the material is hard to teach to yourself.
Manove's class is super easy but it was a struggle getting through his class without dozing off. His lectures cover the material well, but the material that he covers is quite dumbed down and taught in a very boring manner. If you want an easy class, take it. If you want to actually learn micro in depth, don't take this class.
Professor Manove is a great economics professor because he is very knowledgeable about this subject and humorous in lectures. He covers the material pretty well and does not usually put too many problems that he does not cover in class on his midterms. But do pay attention to details. He is extremely helpful out of class. Do go to his office hour.
Only got the grade I did because I had a TF that basically called on you and told you to explain a topic. So, I learned and remembered a lot. Lectures are kinda boring cuz of his monotonous voice, but not confusing to understand. Exams are completely lecture based (never touched the textbook) and even gives practice exam to study with. overall fine
Go to class because he takes attendance based on the clicker. Very lecture-heavy and very monotone voice. Hard not to fall asleep in class sometimes if you're tired. He posts the lecture outlines, and somewhat listen, you'll do well. He also cracks dry jokes.
He is soooooooo nice for an international student! He talks in a slow speed and is easy to understand. His slides cover everything he says in class - it's a little boring -but it's great for exams. No textbooks, no homework, few required readings, and international students are allowed to use dictionaries - both paper ones and electronic ones
He is the best professor I've encountered in college! His lecture is very easy to follow, and his exam is very straightforward most of time! I will definitely take his class again! Professor really makes me be interested in Econ!!!Because of him, I choose ECON as my major!
Many people complained of his boring and long lectures. What they don't say is that Manove is actually hilarious and sarcastic, but people don't give him a chance. If you show up to lecture (don't just take notes, actually listen) and do the problem sets, you will do well.
Easy class and good professor; only thing bad is the mandatory attendance.
No textbook for the class makes lecture slides the class bible. Had to teach myself entire class with his slides as basis. Practice tests are useful. Some questions on exams are straight definitions from lecture slides. Slow lecturer. Hard to pay attention during classes. Jokes are often hit or miss, sometimes offensive. Homework is optional.
Manove is actually pretty good. He has two ways of calculating the final grade and choses the highest one. You have to go to class because the clicker questions record attendance. You don't buy a textbook, but you do have to buy a clicker. Tests are multiple choice (practice exams in advance) with weekly problem sets. Go to class and office hours.
Professor Manove is a cute old man that is super sarcastic. But his class is better than others in the sense that you do not have to buy a textbook and that practice exams reflect the format of exams. Must pay attention in class (clicker questions and exam questions come from the lecture)
The lecture itself is very boring and not useful for the tests. The lecture slides are very useful, and are the only things useful. There are weekly homeworks that will be discussed weekly with your TA, but is not for marks aside from attendance. The homeworks are also not useful. Just look over every single lecture slide the night before test.
Not sure if it was super hard or if I was just stupid; Manove is really nice but boring at times. Posts incomplete slides the day before class, problem sets every week. A couple practice exams before midterms. Checks attendance with clicker questions, so give it to someone if you don't want to show up. takes higher midterm and counts it 45%.
Lectures were slow and boring, but the material was easy to understand. The tests were tricky.
I hated this class. Econ is not a hard concept to understand, this professors lack of ability to teach made a simple concept hard to understand. I ended up having to take a "W" because I was at risk of failing the class. Drones on and on in a monotone voice. Makes the simplest things super confusing. Do yourself a favor and avoid this professor.
Very boring guy that makes everyone come to class by using a clicker. He posts incomplete slides so make sure you pay attention in class. He's not very helpful during office hours, so I went to the TA instead.
Manove is the type of person whose humor you have to like in order to find his class interesting. Very dry, he can come off as boring. Attendance is mandatory, and test/participation make up the entire class. HW is optional. Don't skip any lecture/discussion or you'll lose a point which brought me from a 90 to an 89. Just show up
Professor Manove is a old cranky economics professor through and through, he is long past his prime and should retire before he sours anymore. He told me he did not care if I missed his midterm because of my mothers wedding and said it was, too bad. Has little empathy and talks about how much money he makes too often.
EC101 isn't quantum physics and is not a hard concept to understand but my lord when you have a professor so monotone and hard to listen to without ODing on adderall, it becomes quite difficult. His lecture slides are very good, however, and very useful so just study those and you'll be ok
So his lectures are boring and he is a weird man, yes I agree. BUT he puts so much work into his course making it really clear and really straight forward. Econ is hard but he tries to help you out a lot. So get caffeine before the lecture and visit office hours. He is really a funny guy if you listen to him. I liked his class and learned a lot.
Manove has extremely detailed lecture outlines so it is really easy to follow along, but his lectures are very boring. He talks very slowly and has a monotone, but he is really funny if you pay attention to him. You have to buy a clicker and attendance is mandatory, but there is no required HW and this class seems easier than other EC101s.
Manoves lectures are unbearable and boring. I was able to pay attention to them and understood every concept on the slides but his exams take all of that to the next level. I understood all of the content until it hit the exams. The only way you can do well pretty much is if you have taken micro in the past. Exams are 90% of your grade...
The class is solely based off the content of his lecture slides. This makes it very easy to study for midterms and finals, which make up 90% of your grade. While some may find his lectures boring, if you can follow along, you will pass. He also offers great practice tests and enforces attendance through the use of clicker questions in lecture.
If there is another option for Micro, take the other teacher. His lectures put you to sleep, and he often forgets what he's talking about. You have a problem set each week, and different TAs give different answers because he doesn't even make an answer key for them. His exams are very tricky compared to his lectures. He doesn't care for students.
Lectures are so unbearably boring and you don't learn anything in class. In a way, the class is hard only because you have to learn everything on your own. You don't get answer keys to problem sets and every TA has a different answer for the same problem. The only positive thing about his class was that the exams were scaled pretty well.
Manove is the best econ professor for QST freshmen. He designs the class to be extremely easy; multiple people I know got above 100%. Take notes on the lecture outlines and review them before the test. The practice tests are almost identical to the midterms/final, and he drops the lower midterm. Uses clickers, so go to lecture or give to a friend.
Hard tests (only 3 total) genuinely made me uncomfortable through PRERECORDED LECTURES??? used comparison of women being "temptation" in a degrading way
Professor Manove was a really nice guy and cared about what he was teaching. However, his three-part, 20+ minute lectures each week had no energy to them and were not even related to his midterms given. He did drop the lower of the two midterms which was good. Maybe Covid-19 effected this class.
Hes a nice guy and loves what he is teaching. But the pre recorded lectures were tough to get through. The problem sets never reflected what was on the test. Only 3 tests make up your grade and the tests dont always reflect the material. So many notes too. I had 35+ pages of notes PER test and only wrote what he presented. May be bc of COVID.
Absolutely ridiculous grading for the class. Attendance for discussion no longer counts so that leaves you with either 1 or 2 exams and a final worth 55% of your final grade. His lectures and notes are completely irrelevant for his exams. The discussion problem sets do not have answer keys and don't help much for the exams. The worst.
I really enjoyed his online lectures and his sense of humour. I learned a lot and the class and exams were very fair.
he's a nice guy, but his lectures & material can be hard to understand. notes come in really handy with his class. however, from what I've heard and experienced, his TA's suck. they don't explain well and don't even finish going over assignments. they also ask you for questions then won't answer your questions. tests are super hard tho imo
He is a nice guy, but I don't like his teaching style. He can explain concepts and give great examples but he talks too much, which makes it confusing and boring to learn. If you like a straightforward professor, plz don't take his class.
Really boring prof. Tests are easy(40 mc). No mandatory hw. if you want a good grade in a hub class with little work, just choose manove ec101.
This professor had really hard grading criteria this semester because of the online teaching style. He designed the class so your grade is determined by 100 MC questions literally. every wrong question is 1 point off your average. Additionally, the exams he gives do not relate to the topics he covers in class. The questions are hard and confusing.
His class was unfair and we got our final grade based off our midterms and finals only. There was no curve and his actual midterms/finals were much harder than the practice ones!
Grade based on three exam and if you do poorly on them, you will do badly in class. He changed syllabus last minute to not include participation which was not fair to students that came to discussion expecting it to help their grades. Practice exams were very different to actual exams. TFs told conflicting answers and explanations to problems sets.
Dont listen to all of these bad reviews. As long you listen to his lectures, the class is an easy A. The exams are straightforward and exactly from lecture material. The practice exams are almost the same as the midterms. Professor manove is hilarious and he teaches very clearly
Straightforward class and not difficult if u listen to the lectures. Exams were fair and exactly from lecture material. Problem sets are optional and I didnt do any of them and still got an A
He's funny, and great at dumbing things down so you really understand it. The only issue is that he goes through slides soooooo fast so you can never fully copy down notes. Another issue is he makes students feel dumb when they do not understand something he believes you should already know before coming to his class and its kind of rude
I love Professor Manove! He is a very sweet, understanding professor, and he makes you laugh throughout the lectures. He is very easy to contact. His tests are straight from lecture material/problem set material, and if you attend lecture you'll do well on tests. He also gives really good practice tests to help prepare.
Really boring professor who does not actually explain anything useful. Concepts are easy but you have to teach yourself entirely. Will waste the entire class on things that do not matter to the test. Do not take him!
Manove has said so many problematic things (that I will not repeat here). His lectures are very boring and mandatory for attendance. He doesn't explain anything well and you basically have to teach yourself. I've wanted to fall asleep in every class. Wouldn't recommend.
Manove was really rude about attendance and would consistently call people out if they were late for about 2 minutes. It's an intro class!!! There are hundreds of people! His second exam was also really unfair-- multiple "trick" questions. Some of them where multiple answers are right but you wont get credit unless you pick the more correct one.
Attendance at his lectures is mandatory. His lectures are boring and unhelpful. He is extremely condescending: if you ask a question, he will make you feel as dumb as possible; if you're 2 minutes late to a lecture, he will call you out in front of the class; in general, he is just not very PC. Would not recommend Professor Manove to anyone
I'd never taken an economics class before this one, but this man made me want to become an econ major. GO TO ALL OF THE LECTURES AND TAKE DETAILED NOTES (he goes fast). Very funny and engaging. Approachable outside of class. Everything that's on the tests is in the lectures. The tests are not too hard but are harder than the practice exams.
mean and disrespectful towards students, a ridiculous prof.
Really dry lecturer but he definitely knows what he is talking about. not great at explaining concepts. I learned more from watching Jacob Clifford 5 minute videos than the hour long lectures. Idk how manove ranks with idson and koskinen but he is an ok choice.
awful
Be forewarned- Manove is a VERY dry lecturer. I'd never take another class from him again for this reason. Takes attendance in discussion and lectures. As long as you study the lecture slides you'll do well on tests, as he also curves them. Does not give TFs answers to problem sets and they often got differing answers which was frustrating.
Professor Manove's tests might be hard if you don't read the lectures (go to class), or do the problem sets. Honestly i don't understand why so many people hate him. He is very good at preparing students for exams (LITERALLY ALL THE QUESTIONS ARE SIMILAR TO THE PROBLEM SET). I recommend this professor. I never took econ and I got A's.
Manove was funny and entertaining.
The only reason I did well in this class was because I watched youtube videos online that explained everything. I understood things more clearly from a 5 minute youtube video than an entire semester of lecture. The tests are hard and the second midterm was curved 10 percentage points because the average was so low. Dont take this class or professor
Manove is ok, definitely boring though. Way too easy to sleep in the class. Read the slides and do all the practice problems and make sure you understand them. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS BEFORE THE TEST. After that you should be fine.
Manove is a great professor. If you are considering taking his class, do it.
Material is not extremely difficult and Manove explains pretty well but gets hard to follow when you miss one or two lectures. Seemed very cold during lectures and honestly a very boring lecturer, but he was very approachable outside & responded to my email within a few hours. Curved all of the exams (which changed my letter grade for the test).
I'm a senior that needs my econ credits, so this course was easy A. l liked his course a lot because his slides are really nice and I learned everything I needed to know about EC101 from them. Actually learned a lot. Pair those with the practice exams, discussion worksheets, midterms are a breeze. Only issue is he makes you buy a clicker.
Manove is an old guy that seems that just his slides will help others but it didn't work for me. The problem sets were hard and the tests were even harder even the TAs said so. If you do not have past experience in microeconomics, do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Hes honestly such a funny old man. If u like monotone humor this man is perfect for u. Hes also adorable. Not a hard class either.
All tests are multiple choice and questions come directly from the lecture slides. Lectures are boring but easy to follow. Mandatory attendance with clickers to track attendance. Discussion sections are helpful. He drops one mid-term grade if it helps your grade.
Good professor. Easy to follow since you only need to pay attention to lectures. Exams are a little tricky with since you have to think critically but you get practice exams anyways. TFs are great, I recommend getting help from Wang Hongxi, great TF if you want to learn the concepts thoroughly.
Passionate about his material, but can be boring lectures. Tests are formatted to be way more difficult than they should be (aka more than one answer is correct). Got nothing out of my discussion sections, either. So hard to engage with the TF and most questions discussed could be argued to have other answers and the TF didn't know what to do
Professor Manove is great. Exams are easy if you understand the concepts well, review lecture slides, and do the practice questions.
