Dr. Martin is the most inspirational, influential professor I've had in my college career. His lectures are interest-provoking, and his passion for the discipline is unmatched. He's everything I hope to be as a prof. I think it goes without saying - you should take him if you get a chance.

Dr. Martain is a great guy. He is willing to help you out no matter what. The class discussion are very intersting. He does assign big readings at times and papers are often. His class is not bad. The first day may seem bad but stick in. Just do the work, go to class, and you will be fine.

LECTURES ARE INTERESTING. BE SURE TO DO ASSIGNED READING AS THERE ARE FREQUENT QUIZZES. YOU HAVE TO DO WORK, BUT HE LETS YOU KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HIS CLASS. I AM GLAD I TOOK IT.

Dr. Martin is a great professor. I lucked out in getting someone like him for my first college english experience. I would recommend him to everyone interested in writting... He is down to earth and does not act like he is too smart to talk to you as some professors do.

He is a great teacher. But the class is hard. Definatly not a blow off class. It is fun. He is very down to earth and jpkes around alot. If you want a challenge take him. I had fun. But like I said it was a hard class.

Taking Dr. Martin's class isn't a joke. It's not hard, but it's not easy either. He does a lot of writing assignments and he isn't a easy grader on those essays.

This is one of those classes that isn't easy but isn't that hard. He gives a lot of work but at the same time but the homework is to help prepare you for the essays. Attending class is a must. He is always willing to help you outside of class. Taking his class helped me improve my writing skills.

Dr. Martin is the most helpful professor I have ever had. He's very easy to talk to and incredibly knowledgeable of the subject matter. Is there anything that he does not know? He's not bad eye candy either!

This was a good professor to take...he'd be more adept at teaching a course focusing on literary structure & theory instead of an in-depth study of the content, but he brought some good points to the class.

Definitely not a blow off class. Class discussions were very interesting, and I improved my writing skills by a lot. There is a lot of homework, but it helps with the essays in the end. The papers are challenging, but he's always in his office to help when you need it. I'd take him again.

Great Prof. He is not an "easy" professor, but he is very clear with what he expects for his assignments and always willing to help. You can't go into his class and expect to slack off, but if you go and write all your papers its not hard to pull a good grade. Definately take if you like American Lit.

Very interesting class. There was definitely a lot to read, so I might not recommend taking it during the summer. He grades pretty hard on papers/journals and the semester project was not easy to do during the summer. Dr. Martin is very nice to look at, and he makes the class fun. He's very openminded. Overall, you get the grade you earn.

This is the greatest professor ever!! He does expect you to do your own work, and use your brain, but he helps you as much as possible without doing the work for you. He grades hard, but he gives you chance to edit and rewrite three out of four main papers. I took him for both eng. classes and wish I could take more with him! A definite must!

I love, love, love this class and I love, love, love the teacher! Seriously, this class makes my day every time I go. I'm an Eng major, to be fair, but this class is fun and full of class discussion, so you have to think for yourself. Take Dr. Martin if you can! He's fantastic.

Very nice guy. Tough grader. Lots and lots of reading so do not take in the summer. I didn't like the way he tested but they weren't that hard. Would take again.

Great prof!!! I loved the course and he makes it interesting. Very fair, makes it fair for both majors and non-majors. Not a slacker class, you have to do the reading, but if you do the work, you can make a good grade.

Really good professor, knows a lot about the subject. Exams are easy, quizzes are tricky. Just study for the class and you'll do fine. He's very flexible with students and is more than willing to help. I only took it because I needed it....was willing to help me any way possible.

Dr. Martin is one of the best professors ever. He has a knack for opening up doors to new ways of thinking. He will never disagree/agree with you, he allows you to make choices for yourself & plays the devils advocate so you actually think through what you are saying. He is easy to talk to and knowledgeable. This will be my 2nd class w/ him. :)

The class was easy. If you do the assigned work, you really have nothing to worry about. Taking it during the summer isn't too bad, either. I actually liked taking the course during the summer because the class size was smaller.

Pretty interesting course. I have had him three times (English 200 being the third time), and I have to say, all his classes are great. I hate missing his class because I enjoyed it so much. He enjoys seeing his students succeed so he is willing to help...of course you as a student must show you are willing to work and care about your grades.

He was really cool. I enjoyed his class a lot. He was also very respectful of everyone's beliefs. He's very enthusiastic about what he teaches and in turn got the class excited about it as well. I would totally take him again!

Dr. Martin's lectures over the readings were easy to become interested in, even if I wasn't interested in the readings. He inoffensively added a funny joke, story, or one-liner every now and then. Do the readings & HW, show up, and youll pass easily.

Very helpful teacher. Demands class participation in lectures. Tests are fairly easy if you study your notes and can apply them to the reading material. Do your readings and homework assignments, show up for class, and it's pretty easy. He made it a lot of fun too!

Dr. Martin is awesome and if you go to his office he will always help although he might be doing yoga and listening to The River by Bruce Springsteen. I sometimes got lost when we kept on having us interpret Chumbawumba songs.

he makes the class interesting.u will not fall asleep. u dont really have to buy the book.u can print them off the internet.he gives studyguides. test are easy if u study.i his papers are not clear and grades hard on them. 2papers. gives po quiz.u earn ur grade in this class. do all what he tells u and u will do good, that is reading the homework.

I actually really enjoyed this class...he makes you think. Make sure you read the assigned reading because there is usually a quiz every week. Oh and study your review for the mid-term for the final! I would take Dr. Martin's class again!

If you have him its badass b/c he is REALLY cool! I thought I was going to get an F in the class b/c I did so crappy the first part of the class but worked my ass off for the second half and he really took notice and ended up with a C! Just go to EVERY class do your readings and talk a bit and you'll do fine! TAKE HIM!!

A great professor. This is a tough class. You must of course read the material (as it is a literature class), besides that you will embarass yourself during discussion and fail the quizes if you don't. Dr. Martin is incredibly bright and very willing to help. He doesn't just mark your paper up, but gives tips. Follow those to success.

This man is in a word incredible. He is so intelligent and passionate about his teachings, it is seriously difficult not to enjoy his class. If you are lucky you might even walk out of his class a different person who appreciates a lot more of the life around you (both is society and literature).

This class is not too difficult if you are used to hard work. You have to read the text, and you have to comprehend it. He grades hard, but fair. His lectures are really entertaining, and you have to participate in class discussions. Take him if you want to learn, and are willing to work hard,and you will leave the class changed for the better.

He is a nice guy and keeps the class interesting but he grades extremely hard! He is always willing to help you during office hours. There is a quiz EVERY week and if you don't do the readings then you won't get a good grade in his class.

Dr. Martin is a cool person and makes class very interesting. Be prepared to read a couple of stories a week and put in some work. He really wants you to learn and think for yourself, so he;s not easy.

Dr. Martin is a very bright man and hels in any way he can. However, the grade you get tis the grade you deserve, because it involves work to make a good grade. He is very organized and expects alot of you, so this is not a blow off class.

I saw right off why I'd heard people refer to him as the Leprechaun but with that aside, he is a good, smart prof. who is really interested in his field. He does not come across as a people person, though.

went to class and read the required text. You will have quizzes almost every class and they are added up and made as a test grade so if you bomb them then you bomb a test. i would NOT take him he talk to the class as if were ignorant.

Expect to work for your grade. A lot of reading. Other than that it is a very fun class. He's a cool guy that you can pick with and not be thrown out of class. Don't be afraid to speak up, he likes that. Quizzes are given almost every day along with a story to read for next class meeting. Expect a lot of writing for the tests. Study EVERYTHING.

Expects a lot of reading. If you like history AND you like english, then you will like this class. He relates all of the literature to times in history, which is understandable. There are at least 10 quizzes and only 2 tests with 2 papers. His class is some what hard, i struggle a little but I don't care too much for this type of English class.

I really loved this class. Dr. Martin's lectures are very interesting. There was a lot of reading, but it's a literature course- so you should expect that. Overall, Dr. Martin is one of the best professors I've ever had- you won't regret taking one of his classes.

Dr. Martin is a wonderful professor. He is very passionate about his subject. I am a Chemistry major but took his class and absolutely LOVED IT(Even though it was from 6-8:30 PM on a Thursday night). Tip: Read the stories and visit his office hours.

Great prof! Second time to take him, he's interesting and passionate about his field, but he does expect a lot. You need to speak up in class, do all the readings, make an effort. More than willing to help, I recommend using his office hours. The course is a bit dry but he explains things well, you'll get a lot out of this course

A LOT of reading in this class. Definitely a hard grader on paper so be prepared. The seminar paper is no joke so don't procrastinate! Very interesting lectures and you can tell he wants you to understand and learn from the material and is more than willing to help you do that. Buy ALL the books he tells you, READ, and LEARN THE LIBRARY.

Martin is a great professor and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. His lectures are packed so be sure and take detailed notes. If you don't read, you don't pass. His idea of a good grade on a paper is a C so if you want more than that, you better work for it. I took him last semester and am taking two of his classes this semester.

I took his class last semester and it was quite the struggle as a freshmen since it was primarily an upperclassmen class but with time I got a hang of the heavy discussion and the heavy reading load to go along with it. Keep up in class and go fully awake and ready to take notes DO READ because it is so obvious when it comes to the quizzes.

If you don't like to read or participate, don't take him. Be prepared to read a book and article over that book every weekend of the semester. You have to write 2 essays over 2 of the books and a seminar paper. He grades EXTREMELY hard. Very nit picky. You learn a lot, but if you can't handle criticism, he's not the prof for you. PARTICIPATE.

Well overall I liked him a lot. I definitely learned a lot in his class. He taught the history behind the literature which was interesting. However, you have to really dedicate yourself to his class to pass. I can't stress how much you HAVE to read the stories. His test reviews are really helpful though!

Dr. Martin's 381 class is definitely difficult, but worth taking. I probably never would have learned how to write as effectively without this class. He is tough, but is accessible outside of class, and always willing to help. Also, accept his feedback even if it means making changes. He wants you to be able to do your best.

Absolutely amazing professor and a brilliant man. You just really have to try in his class otherwise you won't get the grade you want overall. I've taken him twice now and I would again if I could, despite knowing the difficulty of one of his classes.

Wouldn't take again

Dr. Martin is SO demanding of his students. He makes us read LONG stories and we usually have quizzes of them. His lectures are interesting, but if you do not attend class, YOU WILL NOT PASS. Only has 2 papers and 2 major exams (midterm and final). You definitely have to work to get the grade you want.

Dr. Martin has been such a great professor my years at SFA. He really cares about his students and wants to see every person succeed. He is a very reasonable person but will not tolerate dishonesty or slacking. I would highly recommend Dr. Martin to any person.

Dr. Martin is one of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure of taking, not to mention one of the most handsome! He really pushed me to better myself in more ways than one. For this class we had to read a YA novel each week as well as academic papers related to the concepts. His lectures are heavy on participation, but are not very high pressure and are a lot of fun. We had to switch to online halfway through the course due to covid and he restructured it very well. I highly recommend Dr. Martin.

2 critical responses, 1 essay on a book, Annotated Bib&Proposal, Seminar Paper (min 8 pgs), & a final. LOTS of reading, I suggest taking notes while reading. Dont put your opinion in papers. The CR is over an essay in a Norton book. You need books. His feedback is great & I feel I improved in my writing bc of this class. Should definitely take it.

Reading quizzes are difficult because it is all open ended questions. Prepare to read a lot and prepare to attend class even with a pandemic going on. You can't attend class on zoom without a serious excuse to do so. For the first exam he really expects u to read five different quotes from five different books and KNOW THE AUTHOR AND NAME OF BOOK.

He is a great prof. One thing that stuck out to me is on the second day of class he already knew our names. He is very challenging and you have to work for it. He does prepare you enough for everything, but you have to interpret a lot of it yourself. You have to go to class!

This was my 3rd time take a class by Martin and it was just as good as the others. I had a fun time reading books outside of my comfort zone. Im glad we only had 3 assignments because there was a lot of reading.

Dr. Martin expects a lot of you but if you show that you care and will work, he will help and guide you along the way. He's actually a very caring man with a sarcastic mask. Come to class, read assignments, do a little outside research, participate in discussions, accept the criticism and grow, he'll quickly become your favorite professor.

I absolutely loved this class! It was difficult and homework heavy, but the professor was hilarious, and gave amazing lectures! He was willing to work with the students and made some amazing points during class. He's a tough grader but gives good feedback on all assignments. Pop quizzes are common. The readings are interesting. highly recommend!
