Though I am barely halfway through the class I feel comfortable saying this professor cares about his students and wants them to succeed. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities and hes very accessible for help, you just need to ask. The tests are a bit difficult but I think thats just me. I wish there were more professors like him.
Martinez is the best chemistry professor! Hes so caring and considerate of his students and really takes the time to make sure we understand the material. He speaks very clearly in lecture and has a kind/professional demeanor. Chemistry is still extremely difficult so there is no easy way through the class but I would DEFINITELY take him again!
It's not easy to come across a professor that genuinely wants their students to succeed! He is very well spoken and explains the subject really well, you can tell he is very passionate about what he does! He always gives written feedback on tests and puts in the extra work to make sure all his students are on he same page, very flexible.
Professor Martinez makes chemistry very easy to understand! He is very caring of his students and wants everyone to be successful. He takes the time to explain the material thoroughly. He put the same effort even after classes went online during the COVID-19 pandemic. He adapted to the situation very well, he knows what hes doing!
Professor Martinez is by far one of the best professors I have ever had as a student at any institution. His lectures are broken down into a way that is easy to comprehend and understand. If you pay attention, you will learn everything he has to teach you. Highly recommend for any class he is teaching!
why does he have good reviews? STAY AWAY for organic chemistry. His labs are insane! I Swear he wants you to be at a doctorate level for these labs and is such a harsh grader. He is a horrible teacher and explains things in a terrible way. I asked questions about material & felt more confused than before. To analytical; he's cursed with knowledge.
He puts so much work into helping his students. He is so patient with his everyone. He is always ready to provide clarification and feedback. I learned more in his Organic Chemistry class than I learned in any previous chemistry class. Its a tough class, but if you take advantage of all the feedback and outside help he offers, you will pass.
Prof. Martinez doesn't follow the syllabus or schedule. He does not know how to use canvas: you will see assignments duplicated, due dates posted incorrectly, and not have a grade most of the semester. We have 4 weeks left and he's only graded 2 labs. He gives 20 pg tests & puts tricks. He doesn't care about his students. AVOID!!! - a 4.0 student
Labs are challenging, but he offers to review each lab and pre-lab so you can revise your report before submitting (if the report is perfect you get the score immediately) . If you take your final report to office hours he goes over your report with you. Practice exams and review sessions for each exam. Questions pulled from notes and practice exam
Reports consume the class, take hours to complete, will take off points for every little thing so must be perfect. Allows you to submit before the due date for feedback until you get it right. You WILL NOT get 100% unless you go to office hours outside of class. Very disorganized, confusing canvas, makes promises he doesnt keep, knows his chem tho
martinez is very unreceptive of student feedback. other profs, especially online, are constantly asking how they can improve. with martinez, students will literally beg him to give us resources, make suggestions to improve communication, and for notes to be uploaded and he wont budge. its like talking to a robot. seriously dont think hes human
Martinez is the worst . He is unorganized, duplicates all the assignments so its hard to follow your grade; modules are so sloppy as he just copies & pastes from previous modules. He never grades anything, we have has 10 labs already & has only graded 2. we're in week 14 of the course & have only taken 1 /4 exams; so we have to do 3 exams in 4weeks
Martinez has perfectly reasonable responses. Don't try to talk to him on the weekend because that is when he gets his oil changed. Expect to hear the same phrases over and over. "The student responses were perfectly reasonable. Give me one minute to reset OneNote. Does this make sense? Any questions(crickets chirping)?" High Key a robot
The only good thing about this class was feedback on lab reports. His canvas modules are terribly organized, and took students complaining constantly throughout the semester to have grades updates. Rushed through the end of semester content, double lecturing into finals week. I suggest a different ochem professor if you want to succeed.
He provides lecture notes that cover everything you need to know. Plenty of example in class. Practice exams and homework provided for each exam that helped a lot for the exams. Lab reports are important, but you can bring lab report drafts to office hours and he gives a lot of feedback.
Super unorganized on canvas. Doesn't communicate. Grades harshly. If you want to waste your money and fail then this is the professor for you! STAY AWAY at all costs.
Provides a workbook of problems to practice and lecture notes. He is more than willing to review your labs and suggest changes before you submit. Practice exams are provided for each exam.
If you attend the lectures, you should be fine. He gives lectures notes and homework packets for each chapter. If you run out of textbook problems, he can loan you another textbook or give you additional problems. Each exam has at least 2 practice exams. He reuses 1-2 questions from Exam 1 on Exam 2, study the exams! Bring reports to office hours.
Taking CHEM 107 online during the summer is difficult, but it was helpful the Prof. provided meetings twice a week for us to ask questions or for short lectures on whatever topic we wanted to cover. Lectures are all recorded and he gives a packets of questions for each chapter. Study the practice exams and you will be ok!
Taking this class last Fall, it was a difficult class and the reports are hard to get used to. Taking biochemistry after I transferred, I appreciate this class more as I learned how to write reports for my future classes. I was able to pass the ACS after taking this course, so I was able to transfer my units. Ask about summer research apps.
I strongly DO NOT recommend taking this class. I ended up dropping the course and I'm so glad I did. I felt that he did not teach at all during his lectures and all he had us do during lectures were answer questions out of the chem manual, which were very hard because he never explained how to do them. (1/2)
Asynchronous class with posted lectures. Homework problems directly from the lecture recordings. Labs in person. 3+ Practice exams for each exam. Attend office hours for 1 on 1 help with homework.
Asynchronous class, but all lectures are posted with notes/slides. He gives a ton of practice exams before each exam. If you read the lab checklists and lab readings, labs are straightforward. He has a lot of office hour time scheduled, so it is easy to ask questions.
Straightforward online class. If you do the homework and practice exams, the exams are not too bad. I had to spend a lot of time reading the book and watching the lectures, but office hours were so helpful when I was stuck on a problem.
Homework may seem like a lot, but he covers every homework problem in the lecture recordings. I took CHEM 100 previously, so CHEM 101 is not too bad. Most of the labs are similar to CHEM 100. If you attend office hours, you can get your questions answered.
Textbook is free and he created homework in Canvas so you don't have to buy online homework. Lab manual can be used for CHEM 101 and CHEM 102, so the course is not as expensive. If you watch the lectures, the quizzes should be manageable.
Practice exams are great for preparing for the exams. Homework is free through Canvas.
it was a class that HEAVILY relied on lectures. His lectures relate to the in-person labs and not watching those videos will affect you detrimentally. If you're not a student who has great time management and is punctual, this class is not for you. Prof is there if you have any questions. The downside is modules are messy.
the modules were very messy. this was a summer course so only two months long but professor started actually grading three weeks after the class started so basically a month. he also doesn't reply very fast, it took 6 days for him to get back to me.
I found Professor Martinez's modules messy and difficult to follow. Some assignments were duplicates of each other, but all counted for credit. We were given a syllabus that stated Zoom lectures would be held weekly, but Professor Martinez never hosted real-time lectures and simply uploaded recordings from previous semesters. Get ready to cry.
Professor Martinez has an awfully messy series of modules for class that were never consistent for the class. His pacing for the lectures were atrocious and his explanation of the material was horrendous. To make things worse, we ended up taking 3 exams in the final 4 weeks, covering 50% of the total grade without sufficient time to cover material.
This class heavily relies on the lecture videos, and he assigns like 20 hours worth of videos each week, sometimes more. This class actually made me cry multiple times. Also, the modules are very messy. I did take the shorter two-month class, but it was a ton of work. I wouldn't recommend this class if you don't have that much time on your hands.
The professor has an abundance of files and materials that can make it confusing for the student taking the cases. Also, the exams are atrocious, along with the amount of material needed to be read and studied just for a low score on exams. I have never gotten anything lower than a B and I receive a D after all the work I did. Don't take Martinez.
I thought I would gradually get accustomed to the messy modules that Mr. Martinez has on his canvas page.. this was not the case. As the course got more and more difficult, it became more difficult to find the files that I needed in order to succeed in the course. Overall, unless you're a chem prodigy or have experience in ochem don't take him
Professor Martinez is very patient and helpful. However his modules are very messy. It makes it hard to find things. There were 3 exams given in the last 3-4 weeks of school. These were a big chunk of our grade. My grade went down almost 20% in two weeks. If you can find another Chemistry professor do it.
The other reviews are odd, He is amazing! Very knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry and never goes off topic. he will be happy to show you a billion times how to work on a problem you are stuck on. it is a hard class, put the effort in and youll be okay.
His modules are unorganized and overwhelming. Professor Martinez is a nice professor and seems very knowledgeable but not a great online teacher. Good luck if you plan on taking multiple classes.
Rarely grades anything, no feedback, no way to know if you're doing good on the course until final week. Very long lectures, not mandatory. When you first register to the course, it shows as zero cost textbook course, but you are still required to buy the LabManual. Hard to keep up with due dates, modules are disorganized, all over the place.
Ever since he took over Chemistry 112, he messed up the grading scale and I feel lost now in the course. His modules are messy. I don't recommend taking Dr. Martinez.
I've been trying to reach out to Dr. Martinez to get the help I needed during office hours, but he does not respond back within 24-48 hours. He seems like a nice guy, but he does not give good feedback. He is clearly doing a sloppy job teaching his classes. I wish there was a new chemistry professor there.
I went to lab today and he was not much of any help. He comes across nice, but his class is not organized.
He seems like a nice person, but he does not care to email the class back when we need help. His teaching and lectures are not organized and are sloppy. I would find another profressor.
This professor does not respond back to emails promptly. His lectures are really messy and awful. Find a different chemistry professor.
I agree that organic chemistry is hard, but ever since the other professor is not present, this Dr. Martinez is making matters worse. He is doing everything the last minute. I can't recommend this professor.
He is so boring. I feel like falling asleep in his class. His grading is way too harsh. I would not recommend his class to my worst enemy.
I rather sign up for a different professor. He grades way too harsh. He does not like to respond fast to email messages. No one likes him.
I'm feeling stressed out about the class since the previous chemistry professor is not there. Dr. Martinez is not preparing us for the ACS exam well enough. Please help us someone out there.
I'm worried of this professor Dr. Martinez. He is not spending a lot of time helping us prepare the for ACS exam and I'm worried I may not pass the class. I feel this whole organic chemistry semester has really been a mess ever since he took over the class. Avoid taking Dr. Martinez
He comes across nice, but he does not teach well. He quickly does his job and leaves the students to learn the material on his own.
I can't recommend taking organic chemistry with Dr. Martinez. He makes the class way too hard to learn. I recommend finding a new chemistry professor.
Oh my god, I can't believe this. He is making us take the ACS exam. This is so unfair since we are not all chemistry majors. This whole semester is destroyed.
His organic chemistry class is too hard. I rather find another professor.
I feel his class is way too hard at the community college. He should be teaching at a university.
He comes across as a nice professor, but he is not of much help in the laboratory and during office hours.
He is way too hard and does not help much in class.
What a terrible chemistry professor. I would start looking for a new professor. This school needs improvement.
He grades way too hard.
We are getting close to the end of the semester and he is not responding back to my emails. It takes him several days and weeks to get back to me.
I recommend finding a new professor. He does not help much and leaves you to learn the material on your own.
He still has not graded are assignments. I'm really stressed out!
He never responds back to my emails. Where is he all the time?
I have no idea what to do. He is not prompt grading assignments and does not respond back fast. It takes him days and weeks to respond back.
He is so lousy. I don't recommend his class.
I fee like dropping out of the class. He has not helped me ever since he took over this class. He is awful.
We are taking Exam #3 this week. He has not helped me prepare for this exam.
He does not help too much. I don't recommend taking this professor.
It has been over 2 months and he has not responded back to my emails.
He is not preparing me for the ACS exam. I feel lost and confused.
We are taking an exam this week and Dr. Martinez has not been much of any help.
I took him for CHEM112 - we were allowed to use our notes on exams, type up lab reports, and take home lab exams. However, CHEM113 was a switch up. Lab reports are handwritten, closed note exam, ACS final and a lab practical that is worth 10% of our grade (all or nothing). The majority of your grade comes AFTER the deadline to drop.
I can't believe this that he is giving 3 exams the last week. I feel like I'm going to fail this course. MSJC screwed up this class.
We lost our main professor in the class. Dr. Martinez is ruining everything and making the class very hard. Run for your life.
I'm really stressed out about Exam #3. I really need Dr. Martinez for office hours but he has not responded back in 4 weeks.
I have to learn everything on my own. He does not care about the class.
His practice exam questions are way too hard. It has nothing to do with his lectures. Get out of this class soon.
You have to learn the material on your own. He seems like a nice man, but he is way too harsh when it comes to grading.
His tests are super hard. His Exam #3 is really going to bring my grade down.
He is so hard. I think I'm going to fail Organic Chemistry 2.
He ruined my 4.0. Thanks dude
He just ruined my GPA too. He is of no help to his students.
I really tried my best in the class. I know Dr. Martinez is a really nice professor, but the problem is he does not help us too much. He makes us do all the work ourselves.
I was doing well at the beginning of the semester, but what destroyed my grade was the last exams Dr. Martinez crammed towards the end of the semester. I felt stressed out. I wish I took another chemistry professor.
It would have been better if he just taught the class in person so we can ask questions. Watching his lectures online made me confused. His exams are way too hard.
I thought he was a very good professor, but I learned in a hard way he does not help much. He is not too much help in lab or in person. We normally have to figure things out for ourselves.
Lectures are hours long & dont help & lab reports take hours to complete. He cant ever answer questions clearly or at all & takes forever to respond to emails. He loves to push all exams toward the last month of school so u dont get the chance to drop if u do bad. He tells us not to worry when we bring up concerns for lab practicals. I could go on.
Professor Martinez is very knowledgeable in chemistry. However, he is not great at teaching O Chem. Watched a couple lecture videos, but YouTube really came in clutch this semester. Practice exams are whack, actual exams are stupid difficult. Labs and Practicals... those were cute. If you're taking him cause you got no other choice, have fun!
Saying that he is a teacher would be an overstatement. His lectures were too long and not engaging nor informative. He likes to ramble on about things we don't need to know. He shoves a bunch of chapters in to one exam and then crams the last few within the same week. He repeats the same phrases over and over to the point where it drives me nuts.
Be ready to never get a straight answer out of him.Organization is god awful & the timeliness of when he posted practice exams (if he ever did) & grades was nonexistent. He has all his exams squeezed at the end of the semester & your grade basically solely depends on em. If you're taking him don't be afraid to call him out and keep him accountable.
I took the class expecting an A and received an A. Good prof.
Since I did well in the class, he wrote a rec letter for med programs and helped me with my applications.
It's true, Martinez is a nice guy. However, he still has a lot to learn when it comes to teaching. Be prepared to watch 6 to 8 hours of lecture for one chapter. Then supplement with other YouTube videos. Labs take hours to prepare for. Take this class when you aren't taking any other rigorous courses. May the odds be ever in your favor.
He has not been much help to me. I wish he could teach better plus he never responds to my email messages.
His lectures are long and boring. He expects you to learn the material yourself. He has not been of any help to me.
I don't know why he is a chemistry professor. He has not been help in this class.
This class has absolutely no pros. Don't take. Be ready to experience extreme stress and total lack of control. The lectures are insanely long (4-8 a week/ 2 hrs). 70% of grade is exams... and there's only 2 (+ACS). The last 2 weeks of class I dropped from an A to C. Tell me how that's normal. There's nothing "reasonable" about that at all. AVOID.
If you enjoy punishing yourself, then take this professor.
I don't understand how he could be so harsh in his grading at the end of the semester.
He comes across nice, but really he is not nice. He is not fair when assigning letter grades.
I only had him for Chemistry 113 so I can only comment on this class. His class is structured not fair. I would not take this professor.
If he was of more help, I would have got a higher grade. I will never take this professor again.
He is a really tough grader. It is so easy to screw up in this class and there is no way to bring your grade back up.
He was not fair these past 4 weeks of class. He was awful and a complete jerk in class.
His lectures are not organized. He is so boring to the class. I know he does his best to help in lab but they don't count as much as his exams. He destroys students grades towards the end of the semester when you don't have a chance to drop out of the class.
Professor Martinez is a nice person, however the spacing of exams stressed me out as a student. The only reason I was able to pass was because he offered retakes on exams we previously failed. The majority of our grade was placed AFTER the drop deadline. The labs took a while because it was handwritten. Focus on doing practice problems - ACS final
I don't know how my grade dropped from an A to a C. This does not seem normal. He is not fair by giving so many tests the last few weeks.
I don't recommend Dr. Martinez. He does not know how to teach and he is not much help when you need him outside of class.
The class I took had labs in-person and notes online. I do feel many may struggle with that, especially with notes online, since you have to come to labs and classes prepared. Professor Martinez does his best to help, and will do his best to guide you. It can be frustrating, especially for harder concepts, so be prepared.
I'm not sure how to agree on the comment below that he is helpful. I found Dr. Martinez frustrating to work with. He never returns my email messages and expects us to study everything on his own. I wish there was a better professor in chemistry on campus.
I beginning to see how terrible his teaching is going to be for the remainder of the semester.
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT take this professor!!!! OCHEM is a hard topic to begin with, and he makes the class much more stressful than it already is. His modules are all over the place, the assignments/labs are very difficult and time consuming. He also grades too hard. At this point, the class seems set up for failure. You'll regret taking him.
I have to agree with the comment below. Dr. Martinez is the worst professor on campus.
He takes 12 hours to verbosely explain in lecture what another professor can do in 2, and when I ask questions, he doesn't clarify well. I passed his class only since he heavily curved the final, after half the class dropped. If you didn't have a good Chem 101/102 background or don't want to teach yourself, DON'T TAKE HIM. He does not accomodate.
I was honestly scared after reading comments and I was prepared to drop his class but I stuck to it cz I had passed the deadline for a full refund. Our class was pretty easy. Didn't really care abt attendance and quality of work. So far as something was turned in, you wld receive full grade. All exams were open notes with unlimited tries and time.
He gives so many tries on the test and gives open notes because he does not care if students learn the material. He should not be teaching at the community college.
Truthfully, he is socially awkward but kind thus gives off vibes that he can not teach. The man is extremely gifted in chemistry, just the teaching methods need to improve. This class was incredibly difficult but he provided extra credit opportunities to improve grades. I recommend emailing him for clarification on assignments and tests.
Truthfully, the guy is socially awkward but kind. He is extremely gifted in chemistry but its his teaching method that needs a little improvement, he is still young and has a lot to learn so I am excited for him to see him become a prodigy. The course was difficult to say the least but the extra credit opportunities make up for it.
I wish I read these review before signing up for his class.
He wants you to show all your math work on lab reports quizzes, and homework but in his lectures he doesnt show all the work and skips steps. His lecture is very confusing. A lot of not helpful homework. Lab reports very confusing and not clear.
I have to agree with the comment below. I would not take this professor.
You would not believe how many people hate this professor.
worst professor i ever had im so glad i dropped his class he shouldn't even be a teacher
Doesn't explain anything. doesn't take time to tell us what we need to be doing , notes are not good very unorganized
When it comes to this professor he doesn't really teach what you need to know i wish i found this site before taking his class! things he has us do as homework or on test he hasn't even taught us yet! its beyond me; to me he is a very lazy instructor and socially awkward. I wouldn't recommend this class if you really are trying to learn.
This man is a literal genius. I don't think people really understand how lucky we are to have someone with this much knowledge so willing to teach us. He skipped high school entirely and went straight to college. Lecture heavy? Yes. Why wouldn't he want to go on and on about the subject he's so passionate about?
He does not have a passion teaching chemistry. He barely teaches the material. Read the rest of the reviews below. This man is terrible. Avoid taking his class or you will be sorry.
I really highly recommend Prof. Michael Martinez! He's one of the best Chemistry professor I've ever had. All his lectures are well explained and lab classes are really engaging and interesting. No complaint but just high recommendation!
He's an awesome teacher. Very attentive and patience to help student to pass the class.
I can't find him a great professor. I feel he does not explain things properly. I would not take his class. He explains some things good, but other things he has a hard time explaining to the class. He is also not accessible for office hours when I need his help. You will be better off with another professor.
he has not been much of help. he really grades so hard you will be sorry taking his class. run forever
Unorganized. Instructions have too much information and differ from 1 place to the next. A lab assignment has instructions in the workbook, canvas, and a 45min video and they don't match so you're still confused. All videos were previously recorded from zoom classes, the students talk through most of it so its long, he should edit or record again.
I did well in his class because I studied on my own. Sure he is educated like the comment given below but he can't explain things properly. He is only nice to his student because he has been in trouble in the past with the district. Don't take him
this was a hybrid class. most of the tests and quizzes you could retake multiple times and see the correct answers to get 100%.. you do have to get a lab textbook but i would buy the online version and print it all out. the labs were very easy. he answers all your questions. not rlly necessary to watch lectures. i had over 100%
The professor has some quirks, but if you engage with the class structure, it's manageable. The textbook is useful, and the extra credit opportunities help balance the difficulty. I found tools like Unstuck study to be super helpful for study prep too.
He grades too hard. I would find a new professor. This guy really does have a bad temper.
Looking back at it he was not the best lecturer like making 8 hour digital lectures weekly is ridiculous he could have summarized it in a quarter of that time but exams werent brutal atleast.
I would definitely recommend taking Prof Martinez. He is overall very accessible and his lectures are online. He makes video lectures for assignments and tests to make it easier.
Avoid him a lot of people drop out of his class
he made organic chem so easy!! doesn't grade hard AT ALL! super nice, no bad temper. made the exams almost identical to the practice exam. most of exams are at home, but the ones in person he allows notes and other paper sources. I don't know why he has all these bad rating but he was amazing this semester :)
Other reviews are so off he was the easiest professor I've ever had. If you want the A, take him, if you want to actually learn, take someone else or prepare to put a lot more effort because his lectures were long and not very helpful. His tests were take-home and identical to his practice exams, quizzes had unlimited tries, hw was very easy. 10/10
