a lot of notes, hard grader. ok test.
Very, very difficult.
Each test has 4 chapters of material, total lunatic.. Not a good professor.
LOTS of material-Tons of inclass note taking-hard grader-gotta work hard for A
No Comments
Sounds like Silvester from Looney Tunes...ALOT OF MATERIAL ON THE TEST
terrible handwriting, speaks funny , very hard test, lots of notes, sucks
well i must say he is a peice of work and everything people are saying is true
No Comments
Alot of note taking. Dont buy the book if you take good notes. Very heavy info for tests. But nice man.
Class a bit boring. There is a lot of note taking. but if you take the notes and go to class...it's an easy A. He's a nice guy too.
subjective grader, alot of information exams tests. Do yourself a favor take Hendricks (better prof and multiple choice exams)
Very broad when it comes to what is going to be on tests, definetley tough when it comes to studying but you do have a heads up on what could be on it but there is a lot to know when it comes to his tests.
IF YOU DON'T MIND MEMORIZING 100 PAGES OF NOTES THEN HIS CLASS SHOULD BE A BREEZE. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK, HIS CLASS NOTES COME STRICTLY FROM THE TEXT. WRITING EVERYTHING FROM THE TEXTBOOK AND EVERYTHING FROM HIS LECTURE NOTES WILL EARN YOU AN A-.
Hes a real jerk and doesnt know how to grade. Doesnt appreciate students that will work hard for him. Needs a speech the****. Good luck if u have him wont be seeing the sunshine too much with all the memorizing u have to do for his class
THIS GUY IS REDICULOUS. HE TREATS THE STUDENTS AS IF YOU WERE AN IDIOT.HE TALKS TO FAST AND DOES NOT EXPLAIN. TESTS ARE REALLY HARD AND U HAVE TO KNOW THE TEXT INSIDE OUT. HIS BOOK REPORT IS A PAIN ALSO. GRADES VERY HARD AND HE WILL TELL YOU HE DOES.
His classes are extremely boring, and he expects you to remember every word he says for tests. His tests are SOOOOO hard, and the book report is ridiculous.
STAY AWAY.. if u mastered the technique of writing 3 pages of notes per minute, then go ahead but if not STAY AWAY.. he gives u 1000 id's and picks 8 for u to know. U can write a novel for the essay and maybe ull get a C
THIS GUY IS HORRRRRRRIBBBBBLEEEE.......TALKS TOO FAST.....GIVES CRAPPY NOTES, NO MULT CHOICE TEST ALL SHORT ANSWER(WHICH ARE'NT SHORT-ANSWER) AND ESSAY ?'S...VERY TOUGH GRADER TOO.....AVOID HIM....HE SUCKS!!!!!! DIE MATTHEWS
He's nice! Very flexible with due dates, test dates, etc. Wants people to do well. Only HW is 1 BOOKREPORT (yes, like 1st grade). Takes attendance, give lots of notes, but you don't have to pay attention-he reads out of the textbook anyway. Just read it.
this class suxx a$$...if u can avoid it pleeeease do so(its for your own good)hes flexible with dates but you only get like 3 grades for your final mark. he's clear in telling you that u have to kno everything. no multiple choice and KNO EVERYTHING!!!
He is a mediocre teacher. He is very understanding with assignments (although there is only one which is a book report). The problem is his teaching method. He just gets up and lectures. The notes are not in order so he will jump 10 years w/o you knowing
he doesnt give hw assignments only 1 br with no due date- hes tests come from the text book and he gives you the IDS before hand--study for his class and get an A--he also drops the lowest grade out of the 3 test.
This is the worst professor EVER! He goes to fast, everything comes stright out of the book. He goes over 3-5 chapters for at test, give 100 ideas to memorize and then only puts 8/100 IDs on the test. STAY AWAY unless you want to lower your GPA!!!!!!!!
Rediculous. Had him on a tuesday & Thursday scheduele, nothing but an hour & 1/2 of straight note taking, and then will not hesitate to give you 40+ id's to study from for the test. Avoid at all costs, transfering it necessary.
he give so much notes and speaks at a very fast pace
Impossible to take coherent notes in his class. His lectures are not very organized, and there is an immense amount of material to know for his tests. There are much better history teachers out there. Do yourself the favor and take them!
If I had the choice of hell or his class, I'd be on the fisrt elevator down. Please, do yourself the favor and don't take the class. For goodness sake I'm a Math major, and i feel Caculus is a breeze in contrast to his s*#t of a class.
He talks too much and you take too much notes which are hard to understand. He doesn't give enough good info. to use on his exams. No homework but you have to read the text book to learn anything.
explains everything very clearly, keeps my attention in class very well. I really enjoyed this clas
goodness gracious was this class hard, he rambled on and on, and I don't like saying anything bad, but I wouldn't recommend this teacher
OO crap its 1105 and i have his exam tomm...im a screwed..this class is rediculous..first day of class 4 pages of notes..NOTES FOR an 1 1/2 everyday day..dont take this class.. he also has a slur and u cant understand him!!
tests are ridicellously hard.
this may be the worst class of all time. besides his lack of knowledgable notes pretaining to the test... he has this annoying lisp so anything with an CH isnt understood.
Hes a nice guy..its a history class anyway so how hard could it be.. the only people who didnt like him were the idiots who dont pay attention and study. hes a smart guy and he only gives 3 tests and 1 essay.. i reccomend him
lots and lots of notes!! All you do is take notes and his tests are hard! If your aren't a History major do not take this class
He's a very nice guy and ery helpful. He will stop anything to answer your questions. He takes attendance everyday and you take an average of 4 pages of notes each class. History is boring but it's not his fault. You have to just wing it with test b/c there's too much info.Gives good curves though
His class is ridiculously hard!!! You take an avg of 4 pages of notes per class, the tests have wayyyyy too much information on them. He is unrealistic in his grading methods.
test are hard
his class is all about attendance and notes, his tests are somewhat hard...one term paper required...pretty nice guy...ended up with a B....
exams are very hard.....there is a midterm and final and one other test..you usually take an average of about 4 pages of notes per 55 minute class...however, he is a nice guy and he is very understanding regarding assignments....there is 1 book report. he doesnt care if u hand it in late
tests are very hard, he only gives one book report which is your only way of passing other than the test. he explains the subject very well and will stop in the middle of a class for anyone who is confused by anything that he taught. hard subject and very hard to pass but excellent teacher
He is not that bad of a teacher. Just take lots of notes, come to class, and read the book. He gives curves on the test.
He really isn't that hard. If you show up to every class and pay attention(very imp) ... you can get a B+ or higher without even studying OR buying the textbook.
all the people who say he is hard are just dumb... ITS A HISTORY CLASS! its not hard unless you dont study.. tests are 10 id's and 2 essays... and they are on the main topics.. hes a fair grader and hes a nice guy.. take him
very good professor...very easy tests..
this guy should not be teaching college froshmen because turns people off with his manner he is retarded when it comes to grading and if u try to talk to hime becareful because he is a sensive guy and what you say will effect your grade
I think that he was a good teacher ... all you have to do s ay attention in class and study. but what else do u expect of a history class. hes a pretty fair grader and is not too strict.
He loves to talk, and talk & talk. I had him at 7:35 AM and I missed alotttt of classes and pulled off a C+. Each class u usually write about 3-4 pgs of notes. There are just tests though..goes a bit fast...but will slow down when u ask for help...he's not difficult, he just loves to lecture!!
If you want to take six pages of notes each day, write a ten page paper, and take very difficult tests then take this class. There should be a warning symbol on the door of his classroom:enter with caution. Please ignore any positive comments he may have recieved.
I had this guy for summer class which was 2 hours each day. Could be boring and he moves along really fast. A nice guy but extremely difficult. You must take about 7 pages of notes each day and both the midterm and the final were extremely difficult
He is an excellent professor!
Anyone who said he is difficult, like the person who couldnt spell "freshmen", are simply unintelligent and lazy. ITS HISTORY! You only do bad if you dont study or take notes. If you can't do these two things you don't belong in a University.
With your grammar and spelling, maybe you're the one who does'nt belong in a university.

I had prof. Matthews for the Spring semester in 05 and I loved him! He goes through the material very fast but when you miss something he doesnt mind going over it again! I suggest you all take this man, he has a passion for history which is great!
You have to take a lot of notes and it's hard to make them up if you don't go to class, but he's really fair about tests and will go over anything you miss. You have to do some work in this class, but he's really a good teacher and very reasonable
He give out so many notes. It seems endless at times. He only tests the class 3 times so you have to review a lot of notes for the test and he gives the worst reviews by basicly saying study everything.
He is worst prof. His notes are to much to copy and he is not clear. His test are not easy!! Don't take him
he is a great professor. lots of notes but you should listen to him very clear
he's an old man that can't teach, if you kno what's good for you, you wont take him. he gives like 2 tests and a paper. the tests are extremely hard and you can't even help ur grade out. DO NOT TAKE HIM
worse professor ever dont take him
Good class if your interested. too many notes though and I would definetly recomand the text book
this is a good class if you know how to work, there is tons of notes the tests are very specific, if youre lazy go get another teacher
If you are an average student like i am it is very hard to do well on this guys tests. WAY TOO MUCH material and way too many notes. However his class is very easy to cheat in ... I suggest simply storing his endless notes in your cell phone (preferably a sidekick or PDA) and you should be just fine.
TAKE HIM! Attendance is mandatory. Gives many notes everyday and tests are based primarily on his lectured notes. Makes historical data easy to comprehend and has a way of delving deeper into the facts and context.
He's a good professor. He really loves history. His tests were directly from his notes which came from the textbook. BUT, I got all As and Bs on all the work in his class and was never absent and got a C+?!?!?!?
He's easy, if you ask me, but I love history. He's a nice guy, tests are easy, they're are directly based on his notes, so TAKE NOTES and LISTEN. 3 tests, 1 paper (like a book report). Go to class, attendance counts I think not to mention a lot of notes. But if you love history or even kind of like it, take Matthews.
DO NOT TAKE this professor. He does not return work on time and does not involve the class at all. Just goes rapid fire through the same notes he has used since he started. Textbook is unnecessary. If you are looking for a fun history professor this is not the one. Also has a hard time saying words like church and Blaise Pascal.
Fairly easy teacher. Attendance is mandatory. Talks straight through the entire class (from his notes). Textbook isn't really necessary, all test material is from class notes. He's a moderate grader. Not a very fun class, but not hard. Go to class, take notes, study the notes.
His class is one of those where you can't miss a class or else you'll miss a lot from the lecture that he's gonna ask in tests. There's a paper about a book that's pretty easy to do. But he doesn't seem to give A's as I had very high grades in tests, papers as one of my classmate. So, can't figure out how to pull off an A in that class. easy class!
Sweet old man but daaamn he can lecture. He will talk straight for an hour and you'll end up writing about 2-3 pages worth of notes per day. Though he's not strict about attendance/lateness, you wont want to miss a class since you'll miss a lot of material. His tests are hard because they're based on 4-5 topics altogether. Luckily, he curves.
Matthews lectures most of the time. He is generally a nice guy but he teaches and lectures fast. If you take him, I advise you to bring your laptop so you can type your notes because you will not catch up to his lessons. He only gives one essay throughout the class. If you miss one class, you will miss out a lot of information, don't be absent.
Ok people, how interesting can you make world history at 7 am? he does his best. You get a sense he loves what he is talking about, and boy oh boy does he talk. Its a lecture class. You can be an hour late and he'll say nothing and still mark you for attendance. No homework, just 3 tests and a paper, none really that hard. It was an easy a... nice
He is a great professor and knows his material but DAMN he can talk. I have him 730 in the mornin until 9 And he talks straight through! He is never late never absent hard to believe because hes kinda oldBring your laptop You will end up with at least a page and a half of notes each class. Attendance is important or youll miss out on lots of notes.
Class was difficult and extremely boring. Not a whole lot can be done to make world history at 7 AM interesting, but he didn't really help in that aspect. Talks non-stop for the entire period. He'll do what he can to help you out, but the 3 tests he gives are difficult. Attendance counts.
Matthews is not an easy A. He is very passionate about the material. Most people I know had withdrawn or dropped his class. Tests cover a lot of information, and it is not solely based on notes (which there are A LOT of). I ended up with a B+ in the class, and I studied around 4 hours for his tests. Not easy, but very interesting!
The class is tough, he goes in depth on the tests. He lectures for the entire class so if you take good notes and study everything you'll be fine.
Really knows his stuff, class can be kind of boring i mean how interesting can history really be especially at 7:30am when i took him. Very nice guy and willing to work with you. Worth taking but not an easy class by any means, gives one 8 page book report but only real homework all semester
he know what hes talking about, he goes into depth about everything, but i mean the test he gives are hard. only three test and one paper but youy have to do good on the test. you have to come to every class, if u dont come u miss alot of notes. you need to be a good note taker and studier for him. i would say do not take
He knows his subject extremely well. He lectures the whole way, so I advise to bring your laptop. 3 tests and 1 paper. His tests aren't hard, just go to class and read the textbook when exams come around for extra review. He takes attendance the beginning of every class. Overall, he's a typical history professor, not hard to get an A :D
I'm the type of student that pays attention in class, this isn't enough in this class. Gives absolutely no homework, so you must review your notes daily to understand the material. Very easy to fall behind, ended up with a B. Sometimes confuses his material on the tests but if you show him it in your notes he correct it. Very understanding.
I've gotten all A's and 1 B+ besides THIS class. He's nice but very boring and talks way too fast. It's so easy to fall asleep in his class, even if you drink coffee, Mt. Dew, anything. For my class, he would tell us to study one thing and a different topic would be highly prevalent on the test.
This was the worst class for me. It's a legit lecture and the paper that he lectures from looks like they are from 1800... He talks really fast and he has a slure and lispe so its hard to understand what he says sometimes. GET THE TEXT BOOK. Your better off reading than listening to him.I HAD TO WITHDRAW FROM THE CLASS RUN AWAY
He is a very nice guy and lets things like missing class and being late slide BUT his tests are near impossible. You have a book report to do on one of 4 books of his choice.Even if you write down every word he speaks you will still be lost.Talks forever about things that are never on the tests.I should have withdrawn when I had the chance.
Need to attend class or easy to fall behind. Overall professor shows interest in history material and if study and pay attention will do well on tests. I had him as a 730am class and he managed to keep my attention and keep class interesting but study hard for tests and prepare for book report
Had to drop this class, very hard grader. Gives a 8 - 12 pg book report. The class average on the first test was a 66. He said he would be happy if our final average was a 75/C+ if you could avoid this class otherwise good luck
All lecture class. If you don't like taking notes don't take this class. Multiple Choice questions are always tricky on exams.
I actually like this class. It's really lectures but if you are the type to take notes and review you will do fine. I had this class at 7:30 so some mornings i was extremely sleepy but all in all he is a great teacher and knows what he's talking about! just study and you will do fine.
Not sure why some people are giving him low ratings. He is a very good teacher, i think people are giving him some low ratings because he lectures with no power point. All you have to do id listen and your golden.
Don't get me wrong, Professor Matthews is a great guy. He reminds me of my grandpa. However, he talks about history literally till the last second class is over. Also, him just talking during his 7:30 am classes can really make you fall asleep. His test are hard as hell, especially the multiple choice. If you're a bad test taker don't take him
Professor Matthews is the type of professor where you really have to pay attention to what he says in his lectures and take notes. Tests come directly from the notes. 3 exams and 1 book report. Overall if your the type to take good notes and pay attention you will do well in this class
If you put in effort, go to class, and take good notes, you'll get an A. I did bad on the 1st test but gradually did better and I ended up with an A. NO hw. He lectures all class which isn't bad because I just took notes on my laptop the whole time. Go to class and read the textbook.
Good teacher, but I definitely recommend to not take him for 7:30am classes. He gives long lectures and sometimes its hard to concentrate. Theres one paper and three tests, which include the final. Tests are kinda tough, make sure you study. The tests are based off the notes he gives in class.
Prof. Matthews is a great man. He loves history and shows it. He lectures most of the class, like most history teachers. His tests are clear if you take notes. Show up to class and he'll boost you up a half letter grade. If you suck at history and hate it, he's not your type of a teacher. Three tests, one paper. If you love history, take him.
He gives help when you want it. Lectures are long and it's easy to understand if you have some past knowledge on the topic. If not than I suggest picking up the textbook and doing some reading. Only three test, and a 10 page book report.
1) Attendance is mandatory because he covers approximately 2 chapters per class. 2) Food is okay to bring, prefers notebook but allows laptop. 3) 2 Tests, 1 Midterm, 1 Final (25-30 MC, 5 Short Answers, 1-2 Essays), and Book Report (8-12 Pgs) 4) Very long lectures, easily sidetracked, Prepare for notes, a lot is to come.
Prof. Matthews class will definitely make you work very hard. You must go to class where he lectures the whole class. You also have to be a very good note taker as pretty much all the information on the test comes from the test. The test are fairly difficult. With that being said, I would have to say I learned a ton in this class
The tests are hard and the way he words the questions are confusing. He's nice but don't take his class.
His personality is great. He shows a natural love for history, however, I have never hated history so much until I entered this class. He literally talks the whole time. No discussions with students. Just talks and you take notes, a few classes later... BOOM: there's a test. RUN AWAY IF YOU WANT TO MAINTAIN A GOOD GPA!
He is a nice and caring guy, not mean or anything. He just lectures the whole time. I barely read the textbook and did well but if you miss class you miss soon much information!!! He gives so many notes and his tests are very hard so you have to study EVERYTHING he says because he may put something on there so trivial. Overall it wasn't too bad.
Prof. Matthews only gives 3 tests a semester and a book report. That's it. There's no homework. For an hour an a half straight all he did was talk. He talks fast, so it's very easy to miss things. He's a tough grader on the assignments he does give. Passing this class is a true struggle. Attendance is mandatory, otherwise you'd miss so many notes.
Nice personality, not mean at all. However, most boring class ever. Reads off his own notes and lectures all class long. No powerpoint or handouts. 3 tests, 1 book report. Easy class IF you learn easily by just listening to a lecture and taking notes. Tests are pretty difficult. Even worst when it's at 7:30 AM. I certainly didn't do good.
Hardest elective I have ever taken. The exams are extremely detailed. Did not have any office hours and would only speak to you after class, which was 10 minutes because he had another class right after. Doesn't care about effort but expects you to show up to every class. Tough, TOUGH grader. PLEASE AVOID IF YOU LOVE YOUR GPA
Hands down one of the most boring classes I've ever taken. The professor has a hard time pronouncing words so most of the time you can't tell what he's said. He talks the whole class with notes that look like they are from the 1800's. He gives 3 tests that aren't cumulative and one book report with no clear grading rubric. would not recommend
PLEASE, I'M BEGGING YOU TO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. One thing I'll say about him is that he's a nice guy, but that's all that he has going for him. He talks way too fast during lectures, so it's hard to take down notes. He gives 3 tests, which are all nearly impossible to pass, a 10 page book report, and absolutely no extra credit. Save your GPA...
Do not take this class. Prof Matthews is a very nice guy. But his class is terrible. He has a old notebook he reads off of for an hour and a half straight. His tests are extremely difficult and often times have very little to do with what he spent time on in class.
PROF. michael matthews is a nice guy, BUT his tests are extremely difficult i would say nearly impossible. You could study and know everything, but when you see his test questions you will have no idea what is going on.
Sweet man. Taught off his old notes and moved a little fast but hes aware of that and if you need him to slow down he will. He gave 3 tests and a book report. Super easy grader but his whole class is lecture so sometimes its like zzz but I mean unless youre a history major, thats how its gonna be. He came through with that A- tho!
This Professor was a horrible teacher. Do NOT take him you won't learn anything even if you think you know History well his tests will surprise you. What he teaches was NOT on the tests. He also goes fast when teaching. He has his own old fashioned notes that are hard to understand. This teacher will be sure to lower your GPA.
Extremely difficult grader. Gives 3 tests(2 during the semester and the 3rd is the final)& a 10 page paper. I studied my notes & the text book & received low grades. Tests are impossible and extremely specific 30 multi, 5 ID and 2 essays. The paper, I had it proof read by the writing center and still got a B+! Tests are very difficult! AVOID
Extremely lecture heavy, dont miss it if possible. Takes attendance each class. Textbook if definitely needed or you wont pass. Exams are 20 multiple choice, a couple short answers, and 2 essays. Kinda difficult especially if you dont like history and it was a 7:30 AM class. He's just an "eh" teacher. Not the worst, not the best. Just read textbook
Lectures the whole time very easy to fall asleep. Nice guy, tries to be funny but boring. Book report paper is ten pages long and the books are very boring. Midterm and final tests. Easy to take out phone kind of but hard tests including an essay. Boring lecture and he takes attendance every day. Not the worst class but not a great teacher.
Sweetest man horrible professor. He speaks through the entire class, and you could hardly understand what he says. Jumps around a lot and never makes it clear what is going to be on the exam. EXAMS ARE HORRIBLE. He moves way to quick and doesn't explain anything.
Mr. Matthews class is the most boring thing ive ever sat through. He lectures the whole class and goes by a power point that he uploads to blackboard but if you werent in class to hear what he says the ppt wont make sense. tests are really hard. he says to read the text book (a lot of reading) but I never did. If you take good notes maybe ull pas
First off let me say this. Just don't take him simple. He doesn't know how to work the computer and its just annoying. He won't email you back, and if he does it dont help whatsoever. Its 2 weeks until finals and we had only one test. Nothing else graded, never tells you anything. Terrible. Acts like you have nothing to do but read history. DONT.
Don't take him. 3 tests. No multiple choice. Nothing but boring lectures and you can't even understand what he is saying. Such a snooze. It's the friday before finals week and he graded one thing entire semester. Never answers emails. Can't even teach yourself because he throws curve balls. Do yourself a favor and find another professor. I beg you.
Had him during corona.1 book report, 3 Exams. Is terrible at emailing you back. In-person midterm was insanely hard bc he asked about the most minute details. Online exams were easier bc it was 'open book' and on relevant terms. If you can take someone better do, if not he's not a terrible choice.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM ESPECIALLY IF IT IS AN IN PERSON CLASS. Especially under the circumstances due to the coronavirus, he DID NOT wear his mask in class. His tests are tough, and he DOES NOT answer your emails. He did not know how to use the sites for virtual class, so DO NOT take him online either. His notes do not match what is on the slides.
7:30 class killed me cuz lecture heavy, would rec laptop instead of writing it out bec he speaks very fast. Some discussion boards here & there, but overall barely any hw. 10 pg book report as the final paper. 3 exams were very difficult, but if you study you're fine. He also gives extra cred on the test from the DB. Extremely sweet and caring.
class is boring and early. hes not too strict on attendance and hes very understanding. i came late to a test and he let me take it the next day. tests are difficult. not a harsh grader on written work but the material is extensive. take notes, definitely study before tests. final paper is 10 page book report, not tough, just manage your time
I am begging you dont take him, worst professor. Gave a 10pg book report & the only instruction given when we asked about an outline was to have footnotes. Tests are impossible mc, identities and essays. He put his powerpoint on one slide all class. Didn't update canvas and left assignments up from years ago. Im so sorry if you get stuck with him.
You have to really study hard if you want to do well in this class. Matthews is a genuinely decent guy but his lectures are so boring and his exams are extremely detail oriented. An A is possible, just take notes and make a study group to prepare before exams. Too much headache for a cor class.
Professor Matthews is a very nice and understanding guy. However, class lectures are often boring and there is A LOT of material, so study throughly for the exams. Read your textbook and make friends in the class to study.
