course was difficult - very monotone - only lecture - tests are hard!
dry boring lectures but easy grader- a likeable guy
No Comments
Good teacher, knows his stuff, if you don't do well in the class it's your fault
he is a nice guy but he is VERY boring...don't take him as an 8am class!
This guy is extremely boring! He knows his material though.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
his lectures are kinda dull, but he's easy. just read and go to class..
this guy is cool. go to class, take notes, study review sheets, get an A. he knows his stuff, tries to be funny at times, you will walk away learning a lot more than you did when u walked in.
Very boring lectures, not sure what you should be taking notes on, but he's a nice guy and tests are not too hard.
boring yes, tangents like crazy, dont know what to take notes on, tests fairly easy, gives essay questions for the tests just have to push him to do so. 20 page group paper to write. interesting class though. he is nice and understandable.
Pretty Interesting gets the points across great review sessions for xtra credit one book nice
Extremely boring. You will hate this class, seriously.
Kills any interest in sociology. Obscure in poli sci and obscure in sociology. Impossible to sit through a 3 hour lecture course. Don't do it.
horrible teacher, very boring and hard to follow, no lecture outlines and you have to read everything or you will fail the tests, a very hard paper also, do not take for a GE class, way too hard, it is a class you will definitely fall asleep in
Be sure to drink a gallon of coffee before you come to class. If you're taking this class as a GE, take it CR/NCR because you'll never show up. You can barely understand what he's saying and he'll use big words out of context. Tests are medium difficulty.
HORRIBLE! Boring, egotistical and annoying. Wouldn't wish his class upon anyone
1st thing you'll notice- really monotone voice. I thought I'd hate it based on comments on here, but he was actually pretty good. REALLY interesting subject matter if you can get past the montone voice and he's actually interesting and funny (in a dry, sarcastic way) if you give it a chance n listen
tough class but interesting material. Professor very helpful and very funny.
Enjoyed the class, lots of papers, tons of reading but very interesting subject. He has a great dry and witty sense of humor which he conveys to his class. He is extremely fair in grading and although the first 2 tests were hard and long in essay length, final wasnt too bad. I would take him again.
Class boring, he loves to talk and hear his voice. Rarely ever lets you out early. Unclear on what he expects out of term paper. Slow grader, still don't know what I got on it. Hope you love to read, there's lots of it.
mccall took over for another teacher who became ill during the semester.he wanted to add more work/papers- but he followed the previous teacher's syllabus.during lectures he was difficult to follow.he really likes talking about statistics.his tests were hard.must read and study a lot.learned a lot
very boring...everything he lectures comes strait from the book, no point in listening to his boring ass lectures. doesn't explain anything. very unclear. doesn't explain what he wants from his paper. likes to point out how stupid the class is
You should read before class in order to get anything out of his lectures or at least bring your book to class. He gives hints and study guides for the tests. He curves. He gives chance for extra credit.Although if it was totally his class as opposed to him taking over, perhaps it'd differed.
This is the WORST teacher I have EVER had! Never responds to phone calls, emails and never shows up for office hrs. Unavailable and trust me, you'll need to ask questions! Lectures are terrible-boring and vague.Tests don't reflect class material or any other material for that matter.15 pg paper too!
Interesting and funny. All tests are multiple choice, average amount of reading, and one "research proposal". The proposal is about 12 pgs long, but we worked in groups and he graded pretty easy on it.
lectures are hard to follow, but if you just read the book, you will be fine. test are straight out of book.
I took 445 but he was a replacement. If he is generally the same in other classes be awake when you come to class. If you are then you should be fine because he is interesting if you can stay alert.Really nice guy.Helps out students.Study guide.Dry sarcasm(+ or -)hmm...MC tests.Good hints given.Recmd.
He starts off kind of slow, but he's really cool. He wants his students to do well. If you are having trouble go to his office hours. Lectures can be a little boring until you figure out where he's going with stuff, but overall the topic is interesting.
Prof is kind of boring, but is really helpful! There's one big project proposal 15+ pages, but it's pretty easy & he grades generously.
Horrible. I slept through the whole semster
Very boring. Its hard not to fall asleep. His tests were ok. If I had to the choice to take him again... I don't think I would.
I like Dr. McCall. His tests are straight from the book and easy. He talks quietly in class which is why I think people say he is boring, but he is actually very knowledgable.
The barefoot prof thing is kind of tired .. so is the guitar in the office. The '60s are over. He needs more energy -- tries so hard to appear hip and laid back that it's become an affectation.
One of the best classes I have ever taken.
His class is so boring and put me to sleep. His lectures are hard to follow. If you read the book you'll do fine cause the tests are straight from the book.
Not very clear, he knows so much information that he tends to talk extremly fast and gets so caught up in what he is saying that he forgets there are others listening to him. Three exams, three papers...study hard and ask questions, it is the only way your going to understand him.
Not very clear, he knows so much information that he tends to talk extremly fast and gets so caught up in what he is saying that he forgets there are others listening to him. Three exams, three papers...study hard and ask questions, it is the only way your going to understand him.
Do not take this class unless your life depends on it!!! Sooo boring!!! I can't believe sdsu lets a boring guy like this ruin an interesting subject. He expects everyone to already know everything about soc. also, but it is a GE class!
His lectutre and personality make it seem like it will be an easy class, which fools a lot of students. His tests are very hard. Pay close attention, which will be hard because he talks continously but not its not very clear what he is talking about. He is also not very organized but that can be an advantage. Go to class and read, you'll do fine
his lectures are un ordganized, but if u go to class attempt to take notes, do the think pieces and skim the readings u will get a B in the class. he curves the class.
Whatever you do, do not take THIS McCALL. You will never get out of this class alive with a C. Take Schlereth or Tipton, they are better.
Mcall is a little scatter brain and disorganized, but he evokes great conversations. If you have a hard time being self motivated or organized i don't recomend this class
FUN class! the tests were not very structured but easy as long as you read. he was an easygoing guy and a cool teacher. i recommend taking this course.
Utterly dull -- take Tipton if at all possible
My goodness, the most boring human being I've ever met! This could have been such an interesting class, but this teacher is horrible! Bring a book to read during lecture (he'll rarely say anything useful anyway). I know that sounds rude, but seriously, he must know he's boring because all of my classmates read through every classand he never cared.
brilliant guy, sometime uses words too big for the class to understand. don't take the class if you're not interested, because if you are, it changes your life and direction. go to his office hours, show some interest. READ.
So far this is the worst class I have ever taken at SDSU. After the first couple of weeks half the class dropped out of sheer boerdom. Where did they get this guy???
It's an upper division class and he teaches it as such. He's incredibly intelligent and encourages students to think critically. It's not just a class where you can memorize some facts an ace the tests.
I love sociology, in fact, it is my minor, but this class has not strucutre at all. It is more interesting reading the book than attending class. If you really love sociology, take the class with a different instructor.
What are you guys talking about? This was the best class ever! Sike! In fact, it was pretty boring. He rambles on, pacing back and forth. I'd rather read the book than be in class. The tests were pretty difficult as well. I like the subject, but not the way this teacher teaches.
hard class but if u read ull be fine...must read all chapters assigned. willing to help in office hrs. nice profe
definitly a little scatter brained but really nice, the tests are hard since i didnt go to class that much. i would have gotten better then a c if i had went, if you want a to pass you need to go and read the book it is so important.
He is so boring, very specific in lecture and goes off on tangents, he is very confusing to follow and his class is hard, teaches like a 500 course.1/4 of grade 12-15pg paper, 3 EXAMS all difficult and tricky, and manadatory attendance. Don't TAKE HIM, YOU WON'T get anything out this class, only headaches when you get ur scores. class avg is 70%(C-)
Michael is a HORRIBLE teacher, his spouse Dr. Madhavi McCall is a complete opposite. Mike is BORING, NO STRUCTURE, STRICT DETAILED GRADER, how can anyone with sdsu comprehension pass his HARD class? No one knows what hes saying with his vocab, He aint the clarrifying type. what a We*rd guy!SDSU students PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM AVOID AT ALL COST!
This professor is extremely nice. He talks too "BIG" for any college level student. He gets side-tracked with stale jokes, but is cool. His tests are waaaay too difficult, and his term paper (12-15 pages) is way too hard. I usually get straight A's (3.9 G.P.A.), but think I will only get a C. Class average is in the "C" range. Needs to lighten up!!
I liked him, but most don't. Really smart. Reading is mandatory, and there's a lot of it. He did curve quite a bit, so I ended up getting a solid A, & I'm no smarter than the next guy. It was interesting, but it's mainly about theories, so it's not too applicable to real life, but that's sociology in general. Nice guy. I thought he was funny.
While He lectures he walks mindlessly back and forth, never drinking his coffee in hand. this shows you what a scatter brain he is. going off on tangents and topping it with difficult work and not getting the earned grade would really make one feel bad. never take his class, you wont learn anything useful in life, use the time somewhere else.
GREAT teacher, super intelligent but approachable and willing to help. Big words yes, lame jokes, no, just over the head of the average student. Learned a ton from him and would not have problem with taking another class with. I enjoy a challenge.
Really great prof. Cares about students, appears to want them to do well. Approachable and easy to talk to but you must be in class and read all materials. Tests massive and semi-difficult, study HARD for them. If you don't do well its probably not his fault! I would/will take another class with him.
He's straight-forward, easygoing and its easy to learn. You cannot just attend class and do well (MUST read). He is flexible on due dates and threw out a paper because we ran out of time. Ask questions, take notes, do the reading and this class is easy.
Not sure what the other reviewer was smoking at the time but this instructor is difficult for Soc 433. Three papers,(which none were thrown out) 3 exams that consist of short answers, essays, and tricky multiple choice. Only allocates one hour for the exam. Struggled to get a 72% in class. Does not answer emails. AVOID! AVOID!
great prof but do the reading & don't fall behind in it!! great & interesting class but i found it really really HARD and i'm a pretty good student.
Hard class and a very smart teacher who demands allot. If you apply yourself you will learn allot and earn a decent grade, slackers BEWARE, you wont pass any of his tests if not thoroughly prepared. Tests are mainly essay and BSing wont work, he's too smart.Got a B+ without even buying the book, you can pass from his lecture notes.3 papers required
I had him for both SOC443 and 420, he is way better at teaching 443. He never answers emails and he never sends out documents or info about the test when he says he will. I personally think he is extremely lazy. this professor has caused me to be more stressed than any other teacher
McCall is one of the nicest professors. His class is no where near easy though. His exams are some of the hardest I've ever took. The final is probably the easiest one. Study hard and take detailed notes and you'll pass. There's a couple response papers assigned which are fun. Material is interesting but slackers beware.
I was hesitant to take this class because of what I read on here. I just graduated and I have to say, the class is not easy but what do you expect? This is college. He is a very intelligent professor who is always willing to help.He is laid back but you have to do what is required on your part. Thanks professor for a great semester!
LOVE HIM. Such an intelligent, genuine professor. Very laid back but loves to help out when you initiate. Keeps subjects interesting no matter what class and has a nice geeky, personal touch which makes the class a lot of fun. Can't get enough of his classes!
Very interesting class, as the semester goes on he lightens up a little bit and incorporates some humor into the lectures. Gives study guides to the 4 tests. Crime portfolio that's only 4 pages, get the book! Not an easy A but if you like the subject you won't mind studying. I recommend this class and would take this professor again!!!
Dude is really nice, but this class was soo hard. The tests are ridiculous: 4 one-page essays, 4 paragraph answers, 10 fill in the blank --- all in 1 hour 15 min. There is not enough time to write enough and the material is SUPER dull. His study guides are helpful to know what to focus on, but it was all just not my cup of tea.
This class is meant for students who are looking to learn! he is difficult, can be difficult to hear, and provides a decent amount of information. Be prepared to learn in his class but he was well worth it! Most i have ever learn in a class at State. Highly recommend if you are dedicated, he does help if he knows you are doing your best. READ!!!!
assigned readings from the book were a bit difficult to understand, so make sure you take good notes in class. First exam is the hardest, the rest of them cover less material and are a bit easier. All the exams are based on short essay and short answer(use bullet points if you want) questions. Not an easy A, but not hard to pass if you study
He is passionate about criminology! He makes the class interesting lecturing on both history and modern times. He is very knowledgeable and a fair grader.
No homework and only three exams (not multiple choice). I recommend going to all classes bc he gives a lot of info that he doesn't write on the board so keep up! With that said, he grades very fairly. I mean if you don't feel like writing in essay format on the exams, he allows you to use bullet points (just make sure they answer the questions!)
This was a tough class. LOTS of reading, and by that I mean REREADING. The book we used was so difficult to understand. You must attend class and you must read before the class in preparation for the lectures. Several written response tests that are difficult depending on your understanding of the book. He's a nice guy and cares, tough subject tho
I'm gonna be honest here. It was not always easy to pay attention to his lectures. There is a ton on information required for each of the 3 tests, and you not only need to remember, but also be able to use the info. No multiple choice on the test, all essay. Show up to class. That being said, I really liked him. He enjoys his topic, and it shows.
One of the most boring class I ever took. No group activities or power-point slides, all he does is talk for the whole class period. It was hard for me to stay awake but I still managed to do the readings on my own time. There are only 3 exams and he does post a study guide on blackboard for students to know what will be on the exams.
Straightforward, exam-based grade. You gotta read thoroughly because exams are short answers and essays. Interesting and challenging material, but not impossible to understand. Really sweet and helpful guy who knows his stuff, just gives dry lectures. Doable upper division sociology credit.
I took McCall's Soc. of Org. class. It's an alright class. You have to really engage the reading to stay alert and interested. There's only 3 exams that make up the entirety of your grade so study for them a lot! The reading is important for the tests. His lectures help explain the reading but he doesn't take attendance- attendance helps though!
I took professor McCall for soc 443 and got an A. It is by no means an easy class but if you attend his lectures and take notes you will pass. There are 3 exams, all of which he gives us a study guide for a week prior and the test questions come straight from it. It is all short answer and essay so really make sure to know the material.
I really liked this mccall. His class is not an easy A, but he is very clear in what to expect on the test. He spends two classes reviewing before the test and is more than open to questions. The only bad thing is that sometimes he can get a little monotone so bring your coffee. The key to this class is attendance and notes.
TAKE HIM ! By far the best class I've taken at State. He doesn't post lectures online so go to class. It's twice a week which makes it easy! And what he's saying is really interesting! He only has 2 midterms and a final (non cumulative). They're fill in the blank but they aren't hard and he puts extra credit on them. Didn't really use the book.
All that goes into the grade book is 3 tests each worth a third of your grade. The tests are NOT multiple choice and instead ask for essay answers. They are based heavily off the book so YOU HAVE TO READ IF YOU WANT TO PASS. The good thing is Prof. McCall is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and explains it extremely well. Learned a lot.
He's a nice teacher! But, it's a very hard class and he's a tough grader
Great professor. There are only three exams which make up your overall grade, but he provides extra credit opportunities. You must be willing to put in the work. Read the assigned readings before attending class, it will make your life easier. Would take him again.
He is one of the worst teachers as far as his teaching goes, he certantly knows the stuff and seems to be a nice teacher at first, but he gives heavy readings, on the test he is a very tough grader even when he says that he is not looking for specifics he is, and the test is open ended questions. Do not take him!
Professor McCall is an excellent professor who makes a complex subject understandable through his great examples. The textbook is really tough to read...I relied heavily on taking great notes during his lectures because he does a much better job of explaining the material than the text does. Take thorough notes and attend every class.
Professor McCall really knows the topic well and he does his best to ensure that his students learn the material. If you show up to class and take detailed notes you will do good on his tests. He does not assign too much reading and there are three tests throughout the semester (non are commutative). Highly recommend this class McCall is the best!
Hes funny and class is simple when you go to class and take notes. He spends time reviewing and answering the questions; the last test is the easiest, the middle one is confusing with all the theories but hes a relative easy grader. Hes very caring and I would love to take him again.
This guy is so nice and he's actually really funny. He pretty much just lectures every day, but he knows what he's talking about and has no problem making the topics easier to understand. If you get distracted easily like me or are a visual learner, sit in the front because there are zero visual aids. Overall, I'd take his class again though.
Skim the book before class, attend class, take detailed notes, and do the study guide and you'll get an A. He was a great, funny, and knowledgable professor, and I learned so much in his class! I would definitely recommend taking him.
Overall, he is a great prof. Though the lectures are a big boring (lack of visual aids), he definitely goes into detail about the topics and makes them interesting. 3 exams and that's it but make sure you read to understand concepts. Highly recommend!!
This class is tough, you have to pay attention and take detailed notes. There are only 3 exams which are essay questions so you really have to study.
Not sure why his ratings so low, he's a really solid professor. Really straight-fwd; go to class, take notes, go to the review before exam, and study for the exams. No hw, I barely read and still did well just off my notes. Adds little jokes here n there, & really knowledgeable. Really easy going. I liked his test formatting too!
I took this class over the summer and it was a great class to take. Professor McCall is so nice and funny and the class is so easy. 3 tests, 3 quizzes (1 dropped) and a paper. The lectures are long sometimes, but they are easy to follow. Loved this class and I would take it again!
Your grade is only based on 3 exams. No extra credit or papers. The lectures can be dry sometimes. Professor tends to be soft spoken and unclear sometimes too. Lectures are not posted online. He goes through the slides fairly quickly.
I love Prof Mccall. He was disorganized in getting our grades back, but he is a great teacher. He teaches exactly what is needed for the test, but I'd still read because he looks for specific examples from the book. Really nice, funny and understanding Professor.
absolutely loved this class. never touched the textbook, you can get by with just good notes from lecture. lectures are interesting and engaging, he's so funny. Tests are fairly easy. one of the best classes I've ever taken.
He mostly test on what he lectures on. But lectures are posted online. The tests are question orientated. Not too tricky if you pay attention in class to the lectures.
Professor ghosted us the entire semester. He must be paying too much attention to his other classes according to the reviews below. Save yourself and do not take this class.
He's a very nice and intelligent man but his lectures DRAG. He goes on tangents and talks slowly. Just speed up lectures to 2x and you'll do fine. Make sure you have the textbook because that material and lecture material is fair game for his quizzes and exams. Graded on 3 quizzes, 2 exams, 1 final, application paper, and timed response Qs
He is a great professor to take. Be ready to watch long lectures on the content and read the book. The quizzes are very particular and will need the book. Need to be a fast thinker with the quizzes and test. 3 test, 3 quizzes (lowest dropped), & 1 simple paper, 1 rapid response. The class is not hard if watch the videos (speed up) & read the book
McCall is real sweetheart. Passionate about his work, engages with students and the material, and easily comprehensible. Refreshing professor for pandemic learning
Overall great Professor :) I really enjoyed his lectures. Also, there is only three exams that count towards your grade.
Mccall is a great professor, lectures aren't really mandatory but are important for understanding the material. He gives great lectures and is very kind and open to answering questions. Only thing difficult is that the grade is made up only of 3 exams, but there is a possibility at the end to improve your grade with an extra exam.
study hard and attend lectures for good grade
His class was manageable overall, just be ontop of writing a lot of class notes! This really helped me throughout the semester and to get a fair grade on his tests. Overall, I thought this class was really interesting and I learned a lot from Professor McCall! Make sure you take good notes and you'll be fine!
No homework! BUT you need to stay on top of the lectures. Graded on first, second, and final exam only (not cumulative). He curves the exams and offered two extra credit assignments. The readings are heavy, don't fall behind. Power-points don't have much details so pay attention to everything he says and take notes based on that.
Overall a great class, very interesting, and a great professor. Make sure to watch all lectures if you want a good grade in exams and do the readings. The class consists of 3 exams (1 final), rapid response (short paper), and 1 essay.
I loved Dr. Mccall! He was very passionate about his teachings and very knowledgeable on the topics. The lectures were all pre recorded so you can go back any time to watch them. You definitely have to watch them to do well on the exams and quizzes but if you pay attention and take notes, the questions are pretty straight forward.
This class was very interesting, only thing lectures where very long. Professor McCall was very helpful, I struggled with the first test, and he gave me advice on how to study and I did great for the rest of class. Consists of Two Exams, two quizzes, one paper and a Final.
Took this class for the summer, if you do not read or watch the lecture videos you will not pass the class. Take very good notes on the readings and lectures to use on exams. 3 exams, 3 quizzes; your lowest quiz grade is dropped. Grade solely based on exams & quizzes; there is no homework or extra credit given.
I went in to this class thinking it would be easy class for my major. Totally wrong lol. You have got to watch all the lecture videos and take good thorough notes. If not you will not pass. My notes saved me. No extra credit was given. (3 exams, 3 quizzes and one quiz was dropped).
Great professor! He truly wants students to succeed. I took soc443 as an online summer class. The whole grade consisted of 3 quizzes and 3 tests. Watching the lectures is vital to doing well, and he also provides some interesting readings. Solid choice for a soc elective.
Professor McCall is a great person. He is very passionate about his course, its a great class but we are only graded on three exams. If you study you will do great! Very interesting class and great professor. Attendance is not required but recommended if you want to pass.
I found the content covered in this class really interesting. If you're interested in criminology and/or law, you'll probably like it too. The professor is a good lecturer and will recognize your effort (if you put in a lot of effort, that is). One thing to be wary of is that you're graded on only three exams. Take good notes and you'll do fine.
My favorite professor. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss class you will miss important info. Everything on exam is on his Powerpoints or shared during his lectures. He is so funny which makes class go by quick. If you complete the study guide and provides LOTS of details on exam, you will get a good grade in his class. Take his class!
McCall is a tough grader. Your grade is determined off of 3 written exams, and he explained that you are able to use bullet points to get your point across. However, he expects you to write a bunch. If you are a teachers pet you are going to get a good grade. He over explains everything and slides are very vague.
You won't pass if you are not ready to read, study, & write! Please study! There are plenty of study tools online for his exams. Flash cards helped me too! If you study you WILL do good. He provides study guides & curves tests. I think the second test included two questions that weren't on the study guide but the guide still helped. STUDY!!! GL :)
Trust me, just choose another professor.
I am a senior and this is the worst prof I've ever had. Very amused by his own inappropriate behavior and opinion-based grading tactics. The class consists of 3 exams and nothing else. The class average was 50% for the first two exams he gave, which were given in essay form and offered no feedback. Definitely likes to see students panic.
This was an easy class if you go to lectures and take good notes. I didn't read the book that was assigned as long as you go to all the lectures and take extensive notes you'll be fine. Study really hard for the three tests, and it's easy! Don't take if you want an easy A, but loved this professor and his lectures are interesting.
Lectures are important to go to, I never read the textbook- ever and got a 101% on one exam. He tries his best to make the subject fun. I thought it was really interesting, if you go to class and pay attention it's not bad at all. He's pretty chill I'm not sure what the other ratings are lol.
Youre only graded off of three exams so if you fail your first one its setting you up for failure of the whole course. His study guides are super vague and even though attendence isnt required you should still show up because if you dont it will only make the exams harder for you.
Super easy if you pay attention and don't miss class!
He grades according to what his heart tells him. No clear criteria, completely up to him if you are "good enough." Still, the content is super interesting and enjoyable to know about. You'll have to study a lot, but the readings are not necessary
Professor McCall is engaging and passionate. While exams are the sole basis for grades, the lectures and textbook provide helpful study material. unstuckstudy was a great complement to prepare for the exams. Overall, a solid elective choice.
Genuinely one of my favorite professors I've had at SDSU to this date! He's such an interesting lecturer and really entertaining! He helped me with outside research for my GWAR and was just overall incredibly helpful and engaging! I cannot recommend a teacher more! Hard grader and only 3 tests based mostly on lectures, so go to class!
Loved this class, make sure you pay attention to the lectures. Only 3 exams and an optional application paper. As long as you pay attention in class you'll do good on the exams, I thought the class would good!
So i barely passed the end of semester fall 2024, but he speaks in parenthesis. for ex: he will say "so lets focus on this, but this works, and also this works, (but not this)" his study guide is so confusing but i passed with the application paper. He's a decent professor. also His slides are very thin so youd have to go off on what he says
He is a nice person, but NOT a good teacher, i never knew what he was talking about during lectures, he grades on 3 tests only, and its based on the book or what he talks about. You cant even try to memorize because the tests are random, he lets a computer generate what questions will be on the test. If you can take a different professor
Loved Prof. McCall! He is brilliant and usually just lectures while pacing, so not much to follow along on visually, but as long as you pay attention to what he says and take notes you will do great! Only three tests the entire semester, answers are hand-written so study hard. Some material is only discussed in class, so attendance can be important
