Much better class than I'd been told it would be. Prof helpful and lots of useful readings. Well organized useful & practical assignments if you need to get together a portfolio of your writing samples for job interviews. Good class & good teacher!
He just rambles and rambles! I think he pulls his assignments out of thin air...he is unable to answer the simplest questions about the class!
Oh my goodness...this guy is a space cadet. He was never prepared for class and his assignments were totally bogus! He couldn't answer simple questions about them or about his lectures. If you are forced to take him do not, I repeat, do NOT ask him any questions unless you have a good 10 minutes (at least) of your time to devote to listening to him ramble. He's one of those teachers that makes going to class nasueating.
Excellent Prof, interesting readings, helpful assignments and Prof always willing to help students Makes Tech Writing interesting & practical Glad I took him for this class and feel I'm really getting my money's worth Highly recommended
Super Prof! Noticed negative rating & must be from student not doing any reading or paying any attention at all because this Prof is super-helpful, goes out of his way to get you to learn, makes Tech Writing interesting and teaches you tons of useful things I'm glad I took him & highly recommend for anyone who wants to learn!
Good Prof overall Can sometimes be scattered--but otherwise organized, clear, helpful, patient, available outside of class, provides lots of outside help, interesting assignments, good readings/case studies. Highly recommended
Totally agree with good ratings Prof McCord helpful & patient. I was afraid of taking this class but he's made it much better & I feel I've learned a lot this semester Very useful assignments and interesting readings Aso very helpful outside of class and is very approachable. Highly Recommended
Agree with all the positive ratings. Dr. McCord helpful, kind, patient and knows his stuff! Hope to take him for advanced class. Wish he also taught other Professional Writing type of classes, I'd take those from him too! Highly recommended.
Take him for the webpage development All rest good too & Dr McCord goes way out of his way to help you if you have any type of problem or don't understand something. Just ask him. He's up to date about what employers want you to learn so this is also valuable Hope to take him for advanced classes! Highly recommended
Totally agree. Helpful, kind teacher. Useful class and assignments. Learning a lot and liking it. Highly recommended.
Great guy. Great class! Take him if you want to experience a Prof who really does help you and know how to help you write well!
Not a fan! Could the man please ramble a little bit more? I don't think I've heard enough about his kids/head cold/getting fired just yet. He doesn't make up his own assignments, so he is unable to answer questions about them. Everybody's grades sucked because he didn't even know what he was looking for!
So he talked about his cold & his kids? So what? Have a little sympathy or get over it (isn't that what you want when you have an excuse for a professor?). Still, a great prof and good class. Clear assignments, fair grading cirteria, interesting readings, good final project and you learn a lot. Highly recommended.
I hated this class more than anything I've done at university, but I learned a great deal and he really knows his stuff, more so than any other prof I've had, besides maybe PrfShaw. If you want an F on your transcript because you can't spend every waking moment on projects, go ahead and take him. You'll probably get a job after taking him though.
Best class I ever took (and I am NOT an English major). I will probably get a job because fo this class. I definitely know I learned a lot, including how to write well and work collaboratively--which are the top two things employers want. This Prof was excellent!
Dr McCord's a good guy, very kind and willing to help. Good class too and a genius about knowing how to teach not so tech savvy Eng majors about computers and programs we need to know. Organized, practical, very human--take him for any class you can and you'll be glad you did. You'll learn A LOT!
Grades had no objective criteria- if he liked you and agreed with your position you had a good grade. My least favorite teacher, I would suggest avoiding at ALL costs. His lectures were also boring and irrelevent. He also often made inappropriate comments.
I learned very little all year. It was the class I dreaded, however my grade was acceptable. I woul definitely avoid for this class! It was not hard, but was my least favorite!
I could do better in this class if he would tell us what he expected. It is required for CSIS but I have heard you can take it through the tech school. The overall opinion of him in our class is the same DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Found this class pointless did not have anything to do with my Major. He refused to answer questions and was very unhelpfull. Wish I did not have to waste my money on this class.
He just talks and talks and talks about literature but doesn't teach any thing. Its all common sense anyways. He gives minimum of 4 page essays that are expected to be great when he doesn't give any one any directions in the class. It sucked for me, and I hate generals.
DO NOT TAKE HIM WHATEVER YOU DO!! HE WANTS YOU TO FAIL AND WILL DO ANYTHING TO NOT HELP YOU!!!! WORST MISTAKE OF MY ENTIRE EDUCATION THUS FAR!
Insane attendance expectations, 95% an A for an english class... Stay Away from this prof as far as I know, dropped the class for a diff. prof 5min after day 1. Kind of full of himself as well.
Mr. McCord DOES NOT WANT YOU TO PASS!He hates students and hates his job. It would be better if he stuck to "make you feel bad hotline". He expects you to know what you haven't learned! Goodness! DONT SIGN UP! YOU CAN IF YOU WANT TO FAIL. DONT SAY WE DIDN'T WARN YOU!
Wow -- after reading the other comments, I wonder if I attended the same classes! I'll admit his courses are demanding, but isn't that what college is *supposed* to be? After over three years, I finally encountered a prof who had high expectations and real requirements. He was always available and ready to help me. I learned a lot in both classes!
I must be fair and say that the professor does know technical report writing, but in teaching the subject, he is absolutely awful in doing so. Incoherent during his lectures by going off topic for nearly 15 minutes at a time. Unable to answer simple questions. This class, which can be very useful for students, is ruined by this horrendous teacher.
This teacher is the worst teacher that I have ever had. I have always got A's in all my English classes, but he was horrible. He grades on whether he likes you or what you are writing about. He also doesn't listen to what you are saying. I think he needs to be fired. Absolutely, a nut job. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
He might grade based on personal preference. I had the same mistakes as other people, and I got a zero, while they only got points taken off. When we had questions he wasn't able to answer them or he wasn't listening. When we answered questions we were frequently interrupted. I don't reccommend this class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! I went to a college prep high school and usually got A's or B's on my papers, but in this class I have been getting C's and D's. He makes you read essay's that are not relavent to the paper you are working on. He never teaches he just makes you read and asks if you have any questions, most of it is self tought.
I don't know why all the bad reviews. I am taking his class right now and EVERYBODY here likes him. He asks a lot from us, but he is always fair. And I know other people not just me have gone to see him and he always helps us. I was surprised to have to take this special class but now that I do I couldn't imagine having another teacher.
He's just mean, don't take any classes with him.
This was NOT an easy class. So I did not give a very high score for that. But this class really does make a difference after you are done being a freshman and you have to take other classes. And professor McCord was able to teach me things that I never learned in my high school writing classes. He was always ready to help me and he did.
He is not very clean in any assignment and leaves it open for interpretation which comes back around during grading. He's not helpful when emailed with a question and Unreasonable when it comes to grading if you didn't interpret the way he did. This could have been a very helpful class for a professional future.
This short story course was THE best course I have taken in my nearly four years at MSUM. There were a few class meetings that lagged a bit, but overall they were great. I feel like falling asleep in some of my classes, but not in this one. Not by a long shot. I frequently visited with him after class or in his office and he was great to talk to.
He is OK. Classes were OK. better than I expected I was dreading this class, and it was not to bad.
He is not very good at giving feedback and it is really hard to read his handwriting when he gives you papers back. The only thing he grades is participation and the papers you write so don't slack on the papers.
He's not a great communicator. All instruction for this class is handed to you on paper. Many of the assignments are up to interpretation--which hurt me badly once. There are also no research papers--Just a lot of: "Describe this scene." What you "learn" is basic middle school English. With that said, know how to write well if you take his class.
He takes attendance daily, grades tough on papers, have homework due every class period. But he is a good guy!
He is a hard teacher, but he is fair. Most of all, I learned a lot in this class.
After taking lots more classes since the short story class with Dr. McCord, I find myself wishing there were more courses like his. Almost everyone was engaged and it was always interesting to come and talk about the stories we had just read. I would take this class again if I could.
This teacher is so rude and full of himself. The assignments aren't bad, but this guy needs to get over himself.
Emailed multiple times during the semester and never heard back. Assignment & online discussion requirements were so wordy and vague it was hard to figure out what exactly his expectations ever were. Said in syllabus we'd receive feedback within 10 days, & almost never received anything near those perimeters... Find another professor if you can.
I do not really like to write but I kinda liked this class. Part of it was because the other people in the class were pretty cool and I found a few friends.
The class was terrible from the start. He did not understand what he was teaching and taught us nothing. Took a very long time to give us feedback yet had strict submission guidelines. Would not respond to emails and would speak condescendingly to us as a class and individually. Avoid Mike McCord like the plague.
Unlike other online classes here, the person "teaching" was unhelpful in nearly every regard. Didn't return grades on our first papers until he was REMINDED by students that we should have gotten feedback earlier than EIGHT WEEKS into the semester. Took a look at his picture on the faculty website and I can only say this: physiognomy is real.
Take his feedback very seriously. His papers are not the typical MLA style, so read the syllabus carefully.
This is the worst online class I have ever taken. He does not grade anything until the very end of the class, so the whole semester you have no idea as to if you are actually doing anything right in this class. He also uses this complicated "minimal marking" grading system which is absolutely useless and does not actually tell you what is wrong.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. I've never once ever gotten a zero on any paper ever, but he wasn't hesitant to give me one. His instructions weren't clear which caused me to misunderstand the material, instead of working with me to make corrections and understand, he told me his decision was final and I was getting a zero.
Felt like he didn't want to be there. I got that impression the entire course, despite his obvious interest in Poe. Fair grader. Seemed like he wanted us to succeed, barring my first comment. Forgettable experience overall. Hoping & suspecting his research is better than his teaching. Utilized various media.
Mcord does not do his job. Due to a low grade on my first essay I emailed him asking him for help and his response was there were simply too many mistakes for a college level essay and to get a tutor. He does not lecture and expects us to learn how to write based on a book. Overall extremely rude and extremely discouraging. Do NOT recommend him!
If you are taking an online class: Expect no instruction, just read the book. You will find out some of your grades in the last few weeks of the class, otherwise there is no feedback. He deducted points, because the margin was not 1 inch on his printer (despite it being 1 inch on my printer!). Avoid this professor, if you learn from feedback!
This professor is not understanding in any way and expects you to understand everything without any questions asked. I would not recommend him as a professor, ever.
I had some medical issues throughout the semester and when I reached out to him for support in my course with him he literally just told me to withdraw from the course and that he wouldn't do anything to help because I should have told him at the beginning of the semester. Now I know to schedule my medical emergencies. Thanks McCord.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN'S CLASS. This course is solely based on reading, and 4-5 writing cases. If you go into this class thinking you'll learn to write for the workplace, you'd be mistaken. Do not expect help either when he gives you an F on an assignment with no clear reasoning or. No making up points -"just do better next time","get a tutor"
Dr. McCord is unreasonable in his attendance and helpfulness for a 400 level online class. 2 large papers that are ridiculously meticulous in how he grades them. Weekly participation through difficult long "short essay" discussion posts where he asks you to write a minimum of 300 words based off of very short questions. Unwavering in policy.
McCord is one of the most difficult professors that I have encountered. If you are a student that requires clarification on expectations or need extra support in anyway, please steer clear of this professor. He clearly loves literature and does pose some interesting prompts to discuss, but is not very understanding or empowering.
Horrible. He shouldn't be a professor. Completely absent from the course, only posted one announcement before the semester started and never again until the very last week. Had no clue if i was passing or failing bc i had no grades posted by the withdrawal date. A harsh grader and offers no help. Doesn't teach anything just expects you to read.
He grades so tough for only a ENGL 099 class, if you can I would take a different course. he has his own paper dimensions that YOU NEED TO FOLLOW, which are very hard to follow. I would write my paper with the University Writing Support Center and he would still crap on my papers saying I did everything wrong.
DO NOT TAKE. you will need to hand in each essay on time and you will need to follow his essay requirements. he is one of the hardest professors to get in contact with. for a class that is not even a 100 level, it is very difficult. he will not give you an extension on anything so be prepared to hand in the essay on time. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
What a dreadful educator. The reading load was not an issue, though it was a lot, I like to read. The issue is his condescending and petty attitude and his absurdly minute, impossible to understand formatting guidelines (which account for a huge amount of the papers grades). I have no idea how this guy became Dean of the department. BOOOO!
He is not accessible outside of class. Never reply back email. His Responses of email wont help that much to your gradings. He Has some of his own grammatical grading criteria. I would never ever Recommend his class.
If you care about your tuition and mental health, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. The guy is horrible and doesn't care about his students. He is by far the worse professor I have ever encountered. He is not accessible outside of the class and threatens to fail his students if they didn't meet his grading standards. In other words, avoid this guy if you can.
The worst professor! I don't recommend taking this class or any class by him ever.
This professor was horrible. He was not helpful when I didn't understand a couple things, just referred me to read the syllabus which I had done multiple times and I even reached out for help from a tutor, who didn't understand it either. Never again will I take a course by him.
With a syllabus that reads more like a manifesto this professor will stress you out with expectations that far exceed anyone else in the English department. He has is own format for papers that isn't in line with the rest of the department and will take 25% off for getting it wrong. His whole attitude turned me off from his class completely! Avoid!
This professor is not helpful whatsoever, he has taken forever to grade and is not helpful when you ask him question. His syllabus is not clear and will always refer you back to it when you do not understand something on it.
If you need to take a course with Mr. McCord, i would suggest take it with ANYONE else. 5 grades through the entire semester: 2 papers, 2 exams, and discussion posts. 2 discussion posts a week based on reading, but he wont grade them until the end. His rubric for papers are hard to understand and says "don't ask for help, directions are above"
I dropped this class on the first day. Five total assignments, won't update grades as we go, won't respond to emails that are not up to his standards, unclear criteria for papers (states in the syllabus that he won't help with that if uncertain), makes many comments about dropping the class if you "can't handle it." DOING TOO MUCH for a 202 level!!
Wow, who does this man think he is? When I realized I was too scared to email him because he seemed so mean in his syllabus, that's when I knew it was time to drop the class. Don't even bother asking him for help with anything because he won't help you. I didn't even give him a chance — I ran away as soon as possible, and I suggest you do the same.
He is an online professor who discourages people from reaching out and emailing him. If you do manage to get a response from him, he just tries to refer you to the syllabus which does not clearly outline his course. He clearly doesn't look at the essays because he gave me 40/80 on the first essay and all he said was I wrote about the wrong topic
First thing, I can't get over his specific indents. You will need a ruler to measure your indents to his specific dimensions (why? I couldn't tell ya). His grading was so confusing, I would stay away from his classes.
This is a professor you do NOT want to have. Beginning of the semester I emailed him a question, which he did not respond to, instead told me to reread the syllabus. He grades HARSH especially with the little instruction he gives. I ended up withdrawing due to his harsh grading and indecency. Hope this helps you decide if his courses are for you.
His feedback is condescending and he took >60 days to grade my essay! His office hours are not in person so you email him and he writes you back during his office hours. His syllabus is like 13 pages of rambling and then tells us to be concise. He just wrote everyone an email about his upcoming jury duty and it was at least 500 words. LOL!
This is by far the toughest class I have ever taken, and it doesn't even apply to my major. The formatting he requires makes absolutely no sense (I'm not using a ruler to measure the spaces between paragraphs), and if you ask him for help, even after saying you've read the syllabus multiple times, he refuses. I've learned nothing in this class.
Truly someone who shouldn't be in education. He doesn't allow creativity in his essays - pigeonholes you - he doesn't allow plot summary, external sources, or any type of speculation. Then when you get your feedback, it's a guessing game of what you did wrong (minimal marking grading) and he is extremely condescending with his feedback. 0/10 stars.
This professor was unprofessional from the start. I had a simple question before my course even started and he simply blew me off and stated that he was "disappointed in me" for not fully reading his 30 page syllabus. From there I chose not to go to him for questions leaving me to try to figure them out on my own. Would not recommend him to anyone.
I dropped this professor's class on the first day after having purchased two of the same books that were listed differently in the bookstore. It all could have been prevented if he had respectfully answered my email before the term started, when I asked what the required texts were for the class. He made me feel like an idiot for emailing him.
Mr. McCord grades harshly on very little. He sets out instructions at the beginning, but if you have questions or attempt to deviate in an attempt to broaden your learning, it is "punished" by his restrictive and narrow view of grading. Believe the other reviews and DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. Genuinely one of the worst experiences I've had in school.
If you have the chance, take this class and future classes with a different professor. He doesn't answer emails and if he does he refers you back to the syllabus without answering your question. He is very rude a hard grader.
Decided to take an online ENGL 390 course, was genuinely excited. I got through the first 3 weeks before realizing the amount of work and hard deadlines he expects are inhuman and unattainable for a full course load. Syllabus dependent, he had nothing in the course except for that and two other items. Save your money and skip his class if you can.
Did not communicate at all.
I would not take a class with Dr. McCord again, he is a very harsh grader and poor communicator. He waits until the very end of the semester to grade most things so you will not know your final grade until they are submitted. Save yourself the anxiety and take this course with a different professor.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. Took a month and a half to grade our first essay and the feedback was minimal while also taking off a huge portion of points. Only 5 total things are put into the gradebook, and they do not get put in until the end of the semester leaving you unawake of if you will pass or not. Long and confusing syllabus.
Terrible professor. Very rude doesn't answer any questions when you email him he will just tell you to look at the syllabus and the syllabus is so long and hard to read since it's so confusing. No one will receive a passing grade on any essays for him. He's extremely the worst professor and extremely rude. Only cares about getting paid not helping.
I would urge anyone against taking this course with McCord. The feedback for essays is both incredibly vague and demeaning, and the grading is very harsh. You WILL get points cut for small things that most other English professors would likely overlook. I loathe this man with my entire heart. Don't take this class if you value your time and money.
I would absolutely not recommend this professor to anyone looking to take this class. He is an extremely harsh grader and gives minimal feedback regardless of how clear it is that you worked hard on the assignment. If you do reach out to him he is extremely belittling and rude. Not worth your time or money. He should not be in the education system.
I strongly recommend never taking a class from this professor. He is a poor communicator and only tells you to refer back to the syllabus, which is confusing and unclear. He is extremely condescending and rude. As someone who typically does not struggle with mental health, he made me question my self worth and if I belonged in college or not.
McCord is the worst professor I've ever had the displeasure of having. I don't think he's happy in his career path and grades extremely unfairly (I got two points taken off an essay about my life because he deemed it “unimportant to anyone who hears it”). I'm so sorry if you're an honors student, this man hates his job and it will be your problem.
