hello, can we say EASY? this guy gives only 4 tests a year, lowest test grade is dropped and a final. the class before each test, he tells you the questions he will ask and then explains the answers. take this class.
Well, there are very few professors with whom you can be guarenteed an A... This is one of them.
Amazing and helpful as far as chem professors go. Makes Organic interesting! Very fair professor who learns every student's name!!!!
This guy went out of his way to make chemistry a GOOD thing. They should clone him!! I can't praise him enough.
I started out hating chem, ended up loving it. One of the best teachers I ever had. TAKE HIS COURSES!!
did not help when I needed it- made me cry several times
EASY class. Nice guy.
Easy but really good, explains things well, friendly. Great professor for a foundation class. Might consider updating his wardrobe.
He is the best teacher to take ogranic with. Clear, helpful, and gives you old exams, which dont really change much. Couldnt get any better then that. If you study you can get an A
Absolutely amazing. He actually makes it possible to understand organic chem. This is by far the best teacher I have ever had at URI and he goes out of his way to know every single student. If you have to take organic, his class is the way to go.
This class is amazing. He is so clear to understand. All of his notes and previous exams are on reserve. Down to earth guy, one of my favorite classes. I definitely recommend this class!
Easy teacher - easy class -take it and get an A!
The best chemistry professor hands down. Excellent lecturer, great notes, exams straight forward and no tricks. Very friendly outside of class as well. Overall great teacher and great guy.
A shining jewel among the horrid slime that comprises the Chem Department. He even tries to learn everyone's name!
He explains organic so well. He is nice, funny and goes out of his way to help students. By far the best teacher I have had in the chem department.
Great easy teacher
Nice guy, really loves science, knows his stuff and explains it well. A little bit of studying = easy A
Took Organic 1, and it has been the most unbelievable experience. Everyone told me that Organic was worse then Gen Chem, and this man has made it come alive- he is possibly the best teacher I have ever had, and certainly the best chemistry teacher, EVER!!! If you can, take every chem class you need, with him.
I took orgo with Dr. McGregor over the summer, & it was worth it. He loves the subject, and it shows. He was very helpful and goes over material as much as he can. You still have to study a good amount, but he made it as easy as probably possible. He can be a bit disorganized, but he was overall enthusiastic and easy to approach with questions.
if you need a science credit, take the damn class. he's the man
McGregor is the best chem professor ever! he is so nice and very helpful, and he is a wicked cool guy :)
What an amazing man, this is what teachers are meant to be! By far my favorite teacher at URI. He's straightforward, clear, energetic, and actually appreciates his students. He's always willing to help outside and inside of class. As long as you put time into studying it is very possible to do well in this class.
Simply the best. You can't ask for a better Organic prof. He's mad chill too. Highly recommended!
McGregor is amazing! He makes an extremely complicated subject (Organic Chemistry) very clear and easy to understand. He posts very thorough notes online and gives practice exams so you know just what to expect on the exams. Plus, he gives lots of partial credit. Great guy - made my life easy!
It's like taking high school chem over again, except this time, it is explained crystal clear. Notes are at the library if you miss class, plus practice exams. Paper is wicked easy, almost guaranteed to pass. No need to go everytime, butyou should go at least once a week :) easy A
I don't know why everyone makes such a big deal about what a great guy he is. He never helps us out and the exams are on stuff we don't go over. Just because something is online doesn't make it easy to understand. He's far too difficult.
awesome guy, makes most classes very interresting, all notes are online, but go and he will review over tests. there is a paper, but it is simple. show up and study a lil, and easy A
Horrible organic professor. Arrogant man. Completely useless for extra help, doesnt want to be bothered. Puts notes online, but they don't go with the book. Exams do not reflect course content. He's basically only there for research.
This class is not an easy A. I made the mistake of thinking it was & it def bit me in the *ss. It's easy in the beginning, but you will have to study like crazy near the middle & towards the very end. The material is very difficult to comprehend and this is definitely not a walk in the park. He seems like a decent guy, but def not one that woul
Study like a crazy maniac and maybe you'll pass the class. It starts off easy, but it just keeps getting harder and harder as the semester goes along. Get used to failing exams cuz Orgo is just that hard. Expect to study like crazy cuz this is def not a walk in the park type of class.
Awsome teacher. Easy class. He explains everything clearly and makes chem fun. All notes are online plus old exams. Study these and you will get an A. Highly Recomended
Awsome teacher. Easy class. He explains everything clearly and makes chem fun. All notes are online plus old exams. Study these and you will get an A. Highly Recomended
Prof McGreggor is probably the best chemistry prof on campus, even though that isnt saying much, he is probably the most helpful. I did not have him during the year, but he is extremely polite and personable. Is there for you whenever you might need a little bit of help, and can always dumb itdown so that you can undertand him.
This guy is OK, not as great as his ratings may indicate. His tests are fairly difficult and you have to study a good amount in order to do well. Organic Chemistry is never a fun class, but study real hard and you should do well. I guess that it doesn't really matter who teaches it, ORGO is & will always suck! Good luck all!
Great professor. Uses great examples in class. Have to study alil for the exams but he explains well. Will go above and beyond to help students.
such a bad teacher, so boring. i almost never go to class. the notes are online and that's good.... he messes up and gets confused at least once per class...
Not as great of a professor as everyone says he is. He tends to look down on you & gets mad at times or gives you that look like you're a complete idiot whenever you ask him a question. His exams are fairly difficult so just study your behind off and you should be able to pass. Organic Chemistry just sucks in general so may God be with you all!!
Awesome guy. Pretty good teacher but u def need to put the time in to do well in the class. He's really helpful and takes a lot of test questions from old exams. If you have to take this class, McGregor is the way to go.
Explains wonderfully, very clear. Quizzes and exams are fairly easy; never opened my book, though I did go to every lecture. Notes are online and straight from the book. Taking the lab (CHM 105) helps a lot as well. Great class, easy A. If you have to take Chemistry, go with McGregor!
He's a little weird and mean to you if you're talking in class, but overall he teaches pretty well. He gets confused a lot and messes things up but his teaching is pretty clear.
Mr. McGregor was extremely boring and hard to follow. His quizzes and tests were sometimes on things i dont even think we learned and although the notes are online they dont help very much
He's an all right teacher, but he doesn't show enough example problems. The exams are hard because you have to memorize so many things. A difficult class, but he's a pretty good teacher for it.
it's a class where u gotta show up and do ur hw, but he's a nice guy. explains things very well compared to other science teachers. welcomes and answers all questions, gives out review sheets. 4 tests (drops the lowest) and a final. if u gotta take this class take it with him.
Awesome guy. Knows his stuff. Very nice and understanding of problems and personal issues. Pushed back dates and excepts late papers with no penalty most of the time. Never used the book but I did go to class whenever I could. Gives a review sheet the day before the test which is basically a carbon copy. Cool demonstrations too. Good class, easy A.
This man is amazing. Great teacher. Knows so much about chemistry. Easy A
Eh, Alright
Out of the 3 professors I've had for any organic classes, he was the best. Definitely the easiest to follow and he actually tells you what you need to know unlike Rosen. Do the practice problems and understand the concepts he teaches.
Writes you notes for each section, so all you have to do is read it, do a few problems, and you are ready for exams
Show up the first class and the day before every exam for a review. You can get away with going to 5 classes the whole entire year if you want.
Organic is hard but he's the clear choice. He far outweighs the other 2 orgo professors. Exams reflect the material covered and he tells you what to expect. He's very passionate about orgo and is a cool guy. Attend class, take good notes, do the textbook problems and you'll pass.
Seriously, Dont even buy the textbook. I didn't open it all year. Wicked easy class, not even kidding. If you go to the review sessions before the tests you're golden. Never any homework and only 3 tests all together. Take CHM 100, it;s a great Gen Ed to skate bye
He isn't always clear in what he is saying in class, but if you go to him with questions he is eager to help. You have to do the problems in the textbook that he assigns, but you know what the exams will be like because of them.
Crappy teacher but easy exams and easy grader. Makes so many mistakes in class. I have corrected him over 6 times within his class. kind of a prick outside of class. Easy exams tho. Better off learning out of the book. Do the examples and practice problems....trust me they will help. All-in-all, a decent guy i guess.
Nice guy, easy class, u don't really have to show up a lot to class...pretty easy tests
Good course. Prof really knows his stuff.
He is the best teacher for Organic 1 and 2. probably the best along the east coast..Just Amazing.
Useless as a General Chemistry Lecture. Doesn't go over most of the things on the exam, does not provide practice exams with similiar questions and can not explain in an understandable and rememberable manner. Notes are often up to 17 and a half pages and the exam I had only focused on 1 of those pages. Studied for 2 days took 4 practice exams: Fai
Go to class. They're usually only a 25-30 minutes anyways. He knows his stuff but gets confused sometimes. The tests were easy if you read his notes. They're all online. Pretty easy class.
Terrible teacher. His notes and lecture are irrelevant to the exams. No practice exams provided. It's not unusual to have class averages in the 50's.
Look. Not the best teacher. Exams relatively random. All I really have to say is I said to him "You kept me waiting 2 hours for the final, throw me a C." and he did!!
Good and bad.His manner of teaching is good but he randomly looses his thought process, his writing on the projector smudges and sometimes illegible, becomes confusing, hard to follow with the book and online notes. His last exam was 2 days prior to the final and thus couldnt know if we did well. That was stupid.Partial credit-mulitple choice mostly
Took organic chemistry 1 and 2 (CHM 227 and 228) as summer courses with him. Grades are based only on exams which are all problems. No multiple choice. Do the assigned problems and understand the basic concepts to be able to do other problems. He's passionate about his subject and very helpful. Slow to respond to email so stop by his office.
really nice guy but not a very good teacher. class is hard and can be boring. definitely do problems in the book for practice.
This guy is awesome. Makes organic chemistry manageable and he has fun doing it.
nice guy. Horrible teacher though. Impossible to contact through email and never gives reviews. he basically tells you to just read the chapters. He often loses track of his thoughts and just blaps about random things often.
Terrible professor! Absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to contact through email, phone or office hours. His tests are extremely difficult and he never gives reviews. He loses track of thoughts and confuses himself with the rest of the class. Avoid him if you can!
Easy class overall. His tests are not that difficult, WAY easier than Geldart's so take that into consideration when choosing. He is not a very good teacher and he loses track of his thoughts, often babbling about random stories. He can also be very cocky. The class is often boring. May be different for others but I never cracked the book.
If you have a lick of sense, you can pass this class. It's super easy, just print out his online notes and go to class as much as possible. I didn't even buy the book. He messes up quite a bit in lecture, but you can always get the jist of what he's trying to say. Exams are easy and the chemistry you need to know is very superficial.
McGregor=the Man. Take him whenever you can. Go to class, go to the SI sessions, and ask him questions. He will go out of his way to answer them. There is no reason not to geT at least a B in his 103 class.
He is a terrible teacher. Seems bothered when you aswk for help. He made me cry and I have never had such a terrible professor in my life. If you do not want to succeed go to him.
I can't believe anyone has anything bad to say about this guy. My favorite teacher at URI. He's an incredible teacher, passionate, very willing to help, but YOU have to be willing to work. This is organic chemistry, not gym class. The content is difficult and at times very boring. It's not his job to make you practice tests. Take responsibility!!
Overall Professor McGregor is a good chemistry teacher. He explains the topics well in class when he is focused, but often gets off task. He assigns skill sets for each chapter as optional, they are worth completing since they are very similar to the tests. He is a nice guy and always willing to help students, I have no idea why there bad comments
Great teacher, very clear. He posts a lot of online resources if you need help. Chemistry is a hard class but he trys to make it as easy as possible.
Nice guy, terrible teacher. Notes in class don't help much for exams because he just covers the same thing over and over again and oversimplifies it, which makes tests hard. He randomly tells pointless stories too which is frustrating when you are actually trying to learn chemistry and improve. GO TO SI SESSIONS...it WILL save your grade!
Great professor, very understanding and helpful. Took summer class with him and he made orgo easy. Do problems in the book, test questions are similar. Has lots of online resources (found on URI chem website).
It seems like everyone has to take CHM 101 twice in order to pass. He is a great guy, this class is almost impossible to pass easily. GO TO SI sessions! He's also dyslexic and messes up in lecture. Probably messes up on grades too.
Chem might be difficult, but McGregor does a good job of making it passable. He uploads all of his notes online, and the SI sessions are really helpful. His office hours were early in the morning, but every weekday, and he was always there and willing to help. Great guy who's willing to give students what they need to pass.
McGregor is the BESTchem teacher at URI! If you have to take chem take it with him. I was having a lot of trouble in chem before I took his class, but he made it so easy to understand. His tests are pretty easy if you take good notes and study. And if you're having trouble he is happy to help. He usually scales his exams which helps a lot too.
Not helpful at all. Oversimplifies his notes. Constantly ignores emails. Gets mad when simple questions are asked. Not recommended.
Very nice guy but an awful teacher. Nothing discussed in class is used on the tests and the study guides he posts online barely help at all. I strongly recommend not taking this class.
This dude is such a beast. def the best teacher I've probably had in my life. the best part is that all his handwritten notes are on sakai, so you def dont have to ever go to class, not once.
The best choice for Organic chem. It is a shame that he doesn't teach Orgo 2. He is very straightforward with what you need to know for tests. Lecture usually goes beyond what you need to know, so look at his review sheets and online notes. He does his best to make class entertaining, but his puns will make you cringe.
He rocks! Best chemistry teacher. Very clear. Sometimes funny. Cool balloon experiment.
Great professor! I thought this class would be impossible, but if you go to class, pay attention, do problems, and really study hard for exam you will be fine. I wish he taught Orgo 2 because I would take it with him in a heartbeat. Really nice, he has a lot of office hours, dont hesitate to ask him questions.
Absolutely horrible. Not attentive with his students one bit, never e-mails back when you have a question. Very vague in class and his online notes are barely legible. I recommend taking a chem class with a different teacher.
his lectures make no sense. he tells you what is going to be on an exam, and then doesnt even use that material. his exam questions are much more complex than the examples he does in class.
These comments below are crazy, Professor McGregor is the man! Had him for 226 227 and 288. Very down to earth and devoted to his students. Exams aren't EASY but very fair. Best advice is not to memorize the practice problems but to learn the general concepts and you'll do fine; he gives a ton of partial credit and is overly fair with grading :)
He's just too awesome! I used to hate Chemistry! Now, it's my favourite. Prof. McGregor is the best. I love him!
Horrible professor. Doesn't email you back, tough tests. The class is self taught. Don't take chem with him. He is the only chem prof that doesn't drop lowest exam.
He could be a better professor. His exams are very hard. I think He has changed...I am surprised of all the good comments he got, but in the begining of the course he was good, but now in the middle he is killing us. I say avoid him at all costs.
This guy is passionate about his work as a chemist and it shows. He really does know his stuff when it comes to chemistry. He was really clear and good in the beginning of the semester, but it did go down a bit as the semester went on. Mostly focuses on calculations. Not a bad professor to take.
McGregor is the man! If you have to take orgo, take it with him! Great teaching style, very personable (will remember your name), and what he teaches will be on the test. Do the practice problems in the book and you'll do really well!
I'm glad i took AP chem before or else this class would've been confusing! I would recomend readng the chapter before going to class, and UNDERSTANDING the examples from the textbook, don't memorize them! Also watch you tube videos for a better understanding of the lesson. Pay attention to the lectures cuz not evrthng from the book is on the test
Go to class and pay attention. Study for the test and work hard. He may not be excellent, but he's terrific compared to your other choices for teachers
If you pay attention and read his notes you should do well in his class. His tests are fairly easy with multiple choice and true/false questions. The online work is awful like always. I took AP chem which helped, but if you didn't I would go to SI sessions to better understand bc his class gets boring.
Teaches well, just have to pay attention to what he writes down and youre good
He was a friendly man but his way of grading is very poor. You can be an excellent student, with A's in every class, but you will take the test and either not understand what he is asking or he will take TONS of points off for little mistakes. I struggled in this class, it's the only class I did. I'm not taking chem at URI anymore.
Really cares about the subject, lectures are really helpful. Pay attention and class will be easy , don't pay attention, class will be hard.
I had him for 2 semesters of general chemistry. He may not be the best teacher in class and can be all over the place, but he is definitely the best option for a gen. chem. teacher. He tries hard to get to know the students names in class, so make yourself known to him. He clearly loves chemistry and wants his students to succeed
Good professor that explains things well during lecture. Go see him for help if you need it because class material is covered very quickly and also try to make it to SI sessions they really help too. Tends to go off on tangents during lectures because he is really passionate about his job. Try to attend class as much as possible.
kind of confusing in lecture. does not respond to emails at all-even if it is pertinent to receive a response. would not recommend.
give no notes
Professor McGregor is very knowledgeable about chemistry and is very clear in his lectures. However, some of the exam questions do not match up with what we learn in lecture, so make sure you read the textbook and do the practice skills problems he recommend. HIGHLY recommend going to the SI untis, which will help out a lot and clarify a lot.
I was an aspiring pharmacy major, and after the first few weeks of this class I decided that this was not the right path for me. I enjoy chemistry but the way it was being taught was atrocious. I ended dropping the course as soon as I could.
Does a great job with explaining the material and providing plenty of examples in class. Gives tons of online resources including videos, worksheets, old exams, etc. to help study for exams. Online homework can be annoying but you actually learn a lot if you go to class. He is definitely a passionate guy love the sneakers.
Not good at all, very confusing has no notes, teaches with a projector, blank copy paper and a sharpie. Nice guy but horrible teacher he also mumbles alot
Awful. Had him for my CHM 112, not sure why he ranked so highly here. Doesn't really give you notes, and he makes so many errors when doing problems-this leads to confusion. Tests commonly have questions that look nothing like the ones on the practice problems. Avoid this guy!!!
Overall, Mikey is a pretty good professor. He gives tons of examples in class and makes orgo I easier to understand. Probably one of the best options for orgo at URI. There are four exams and the final, he drops the lowest and if you do better on your final he replaces your second lowest with the final exam grade. Normeh says take orgo with Mikey!!
One of the best Chemistry professors at URI. Orgo is a hard class no matter the instructor but he gives good notes and explanations and tries his hardest to test you on topics that were definitely covered in class. Very approachable and willing to answer questions. You can see his passion and can tell he really wants students to pass
If you can take chm with a different professor. He isn't a terrible teacher, but he will always add a problem onto the exams that we didn't do an example of in class. The class is passable for sure, but if possible go for Ngo or another professor.
Exams are really hard but he does examples in class that are usually like some of the problems. The only way I passed was by reading the book and the scale.
He throws lots of curve-balls on exams. But then, how can he test our knowledge if all the exam questions are something we have seen before. He wants the students to apply what we learned into solving a new problem that we've never seen the like before. Overall, I learned Organic Chemistry from this guy. He really teaches well. He is very tough!
great teacher
9/12 WOULD RECOMMEND!! He is the definition of excellent
I really miss Gregs. I'm suffering through orgo 2 right now with a different instructor &it really makes me appreciate having this guy for orgo 1. Miss the sneakers too.
Explains lecture pretty decent. If you don't go to lecture you will not pass. However it is very disorganized. Orgo is difficult enough and then his disorganized fashion just makes it much worse. Got in the 30's on the last exam, and I study 2+ hours a day for this class. Textbook is not helpful at all, don't even bother buying it
Really nice guy and approachable. Went to his office a couple times, willing to help you. Wants you to do well. However, office hours did not help me for the exams whatsoever. Needs more grades in the grade book besides exams. HW would be nice. I taught myself out of the book and barely managed to pass. Lecture is not related to exams.
TOUGH GRADER. Exams are filled with easy questions and ALSO curve balls which have problems you have never seen before. He isn't very clear on what to study. If you miss lecture and read the book, you will fail. He does not cover everything in the text and covers things outside the text. Some reagents he covers are nowhere in the text.
McGregor is an awesome guy. But, once you start talking about Organic Chem, he is all over the place with his teaching. Worst class I've ever taken and now have to take it again because I failed. Only has exams that you're graded on. Homework or other assignments would definitely help. Teaches on a projector with a paper and black marker.
The online lectures were far better than anything he explained in class. Very hard to follow anything he said in class.
Dr. McGregor is one of my favorite professors. He encourages students to work on their own and learn the material, and but he also lectures on what he thinks is important. His exams can be tricky, but he usually gives one question that is very basic. In class he uses visuals and examples to show concepts. Can't wait for orgo1 with him
Does great work with in class problems. Tests are tough but not impossible. Very friendly and genuine guy. As a side note, he looooooooves to prolong his worrrrrrrds.
He's not the best teacher that I've ever had, but he's certainly not the worst. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, but he does so with a projector, paper, and a sharpie. The tests can be challenging and require a lot of studying and a thorough understanding of the materials to answer the curveballs he throws. He needs to give homework.
Dr. McGregor clearly cares about his students, especially the ones taking organic chemistry. He makes it clear from day one that you'll have to work hard if you want to do well, but it's obvious that he will do as much as he possibly can to prepare you for his exams. Exams are based on his lectures, but some questions may be worded difficultly.
Taking 228 after having Dr. McGregor for 227 course makes learning the new material much easier. In fact, once you master the foundations of orgo, everything seems to fall into place! As always, McGregor is friendly and approachable and he will always help you out if you put in the energy for his course. Plus his stories are great, too!
If I had a dollar for every time he said "this is one of my favorites", I'd be able to buy the new Chem building.
He tries his best, to be fair, but he constantly assumes that we understand the material a lot better than we do, and he'll sometimes forget to finish writing out equations and just move on to the next topic, which is infuriating. He gives partial credit on exams, but that class is still tough.
Considering our Chemistry department isn't that amazing, McGregor is one of the better options. His exams make sense for the most part but the homework usually doesn't line up with what we learn in class. He doesn't always explain things the best but he's pretty good for the most part
He started out good, but then he flew threw the hard/core concepts and made a lot of mistakes as a result. He's not too bad, but you're gonna have to self-teach a lot of material. I'd suggest paying attention to whatever topics he's teaching and then use other resources to get a better perspective. Class isn't difficult if you put in the work.
He will spend the majority of each class explaining one topic and does not finish the lesson. Will only teach 10% of material needed for exams, the rest is up to the student to figure out on their own. Very hard to get in contact with outside of classroom. Condescending. Speaks monotone and unpassionately. Feels like a bad highschool chem class.
He spends one class going over one topic and doesn't even tell us how we would ever use it. He tries to teach, but overall has no clue what he is doing in the classroom. No doubt he is a brilliant chemist, he just isn't cut out to be a professor. Doesn't teach half of what is on his exams so be prepared to teach yourself everything!!!!
Love this guy, definitely the best teacher I have had while at URI. He is passionate about orgo and helping the students that come to him for help. Emails don't get responded to in-depth but if you go to him he will work through it with you until you feel confident about it. Orgo is a hard class and he has high standards. Love the sneakers too
McGregor is definitely not a bad guy. He clearly loves chemistry and he has some funny stories to help you remember the material. He is a little scatterbrained which really didn't help with material this complex, and though he gives partial credit pretty generously on exams, some questions are from left field. Go to lecture & SI sessions!
He does a really bad job of preparing students for the types of questions he asks on tests. His in class examples are nothing like test questions and he often makes mistakes while doing his own examples. You will learn more by reading the text book after his lectures. Not helpful at all during office hours!
He's awful. His tests aren't related to the study material. I know everyone says that but he actually tells you to study the wrong material. Literally, he'll say study chapter six and test you on seven and eight. He's awful, and a terrible person, and probably the biggest reason why URI's chemistry department loses accreditation every other year
McGregor is the worst teacher I've ever had in my college career. He is willing to help but isn't helpful at all. His exams are stupid hard and he doesn't care if you fail. Even if you've taken the class before.
He gave my class an exam on the last day of lecture before the final and didn't have them graded in time for the final. Waits until last day to post final grade so he can't be questioned. Tried emailing him several times about my grades but he won't respond. Looks like I'll be retaking it next semester with another professor. Worst prof ever
Class really isn't difficult compared to the level of difficulty I saw on old exams from other schools, so my advice is to google old exams and study using those. Some of these comments below are just salty. McGregor definitely isn't a great teacher and he takes forever to get grades back, but his class really isn't that bad if you prepare right.
There's a reason why the Chemistry Department is under review. The amount people failing each exam was insane, the prof. was all over the place, no PP, lecture is given w/ pen and paper so have fun with those notes and exams are a little tough, there's Partial Credit but half the stuff he tells you to study aren't even on the exam. Good luck.
he was a strong reason as to why I failed this course. The structure of the class is horrible, and his tests are brutally hard and are nothing like the text book or few homework problems assigned. He doesn't work off power points and focuses heavily on drawing structures. Looks like I will be retaking this course to stay in my program.
Doesn't teach class with a powerpoint, uses a pen and paper which is really hard to follow. Lectures are all over the place and makes a ton of mistakes. Sends out a e-mail less than a day before the test saying what you might expect. Studying for tests are close to impossible b/c you don't even know what to study. Online hw.
Terrible prof. Lectures are very difficult to follow. He uses a pen and paper to draw structures and write "notes." Takes FOREVER to get grades back. Had an exam the last day of class, didn't get the grade/exam back before the final exam. Fails to respond to emails. Orgo is difficult enough and he makes it even worse. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
A lot of people really don't like McGregor, but if you go to his lectures, take decent in class and book notes, you can pass with a good grade. I visited his office every other week and he was super helpful outside of class; not so great at responding to emails, but very helpful in person.
Go to class, take notes, study for exams, and you will pass. If you miss class, he already has hand written notes online. His exam questions can be worded a little different, but if you do the problems that he writes in his "points of emphasis" you will get AT LEAST a solid 70. Everything you need to know for exams is on class website.
He is so bad, he does not explain things well at all.
Does not explain things thoroughly and is all over the place during lecture and in his notes, which makes it hard to follow. He makes mistakes and then gets flustered and confuses the class even more. Gives you no guideline for the layout of tests and can be a hard grader.
Teaches class using a marker and computer paper on an overhead projector. The problems he does in class seem easy, but once you get to the exam there are problems you know he didn't teach. Each exam is worth 23% of your grade so if you even do remotely bad on one of them you'll probably have to retake the class. Nice guy, just not a good teacher.
Get's off task quickly/explains the same thing over and over. He doesn't realize he's falling behind until the test, which is too late for students. He's usually talking about lab calculations you did 2 weeks ago. Had to teach myself a lot of stuff.
Pretty lousy teacher overall. Would not recommend taking if actually trying to learn chemistry. Gets off topic very easily, and is very behind on material compared to other classes. Homework is due after exams, which is odd.
The guy is self entitled. Was sitting in rams den my freshman year crapping all over his lousy department. He rudely interrupts my conversation to lecture me on why if I keep blaming others for my own downfalls I will never succeed. Figures little did he know I got an A in CHM101. Now a graduate engineer making twice what he makes lmao.
Just pray for me
McGregor, as well as the Chemistry department at URI as a whole, are pretty lousy. He teaches class with a marker and paper and consistently screws up the examples he gives in class. For the semester I took him, exams were worth 23% each (92% of your total grade), so if you do poorly on one, you probably won't pass the class. Would not recommend!
Mcgregor hurts more than he helps. He is constantly messing up on simple equations and backtracking. His unorganized teaching style makes it extremely hard to understand any concept. I stopped going to class and am doing better by teaching myself instead. He is inconsistent with grading and policies and is hard to work with.
He does a bunch of math problems (incorrectly), but he doesn't explain the concepts behind them. Test questions are all on the reverse processes of problems done in class, but because the concepts weren't laid out, you have no idea how to solve them. Was a straight A student. Got my first F in this class.
I liked him. Related what we were doing to real world problems, explained what was important and how something would relate to future chem courses. Tests mix of calculations, multi-choice, and true/false - fair, gives substantial part-credit. Does warm-ups at beginning, very helpful if you don't understand what was covered in the prev class.
The chem department at URI is horrible so McGregor is the best of the worst. He makes numerous mistakes while doing problems in class so studying the homework questions may be your best bet. Exams are a big chunk of your grade (92%) so do well on them. He will replace your lowest grade with the final though.
I honestly didn't think McGregor was as bad as some people make him out to be. I went to class and was able to comprehend material and passed every exam. Compared to the other professors who teach this course, McGregor's exams are definitely the fairest. He gives a decent amount of partial credit and I learned a lot in his class, so I'd recommend!
Just a great guy. If you need to take chemistry at URI, stop searching on this site and listen up: take it with Dr McGregor. Yes, he uses pen&paper. Yes, he tells stories. These are good qualities and you will come to appreciate his style. His method of teaching: learn the rules of the game, then play it. Excellent prof, URI lucky to have him.
This class was tough. Some of his exams were tough. But he is an alright professor. I worked my butt off in this class and ended up with a C.
Seems to know what he is doing, but needs to learn how to put in clear in words. He also has a tendency of losing tests
Makes class fun. Does some cool experiments but not the best at explaining concepts. The last quarter of the semester material became very difficult to learn from him.
First off, 350 characters does not do this man justice. I would like to start off saying that McGregor has forever changed my life. Not only is he a prophet of chemistry but he puts the bad boy in dipole-dipole interactions. He's not afraid to call you out in front of the whole class for taking notes on ur computer. The true king of Beaupre.
McGregor is not a bad choice for chem. You really have to work hard for your grade and you need to put in a lot of time outside of class. do the skills practice he puts online there will be nothing on the exam that you haven't seen before, very fair exams, nice, funny, definitely not the worst professor you could have for chem just work hard
He goes off on unrelated tangents almost every class, and gives homework and examples in class that are far easier than the tests. I studied all night for a test and still got a 68. Not a good teacher.
The real downside to taking McGregor is that he doesn't have a structure for lecture. He just does problems on computer paper on an overhead projector to teach. I would absolutely recommend reading the textbook to fill in the stuff he misses (which is a lot). He also grades pretty tough but the exams are fairly easy.
Honestly, he seems like a nice person, but as a teacher he is not very good. Walks into class and goes right into lecturing, doesn't even tell you what topic you're learning. Grading criteria is pretty straightforward, it all comes from how well you do on the exams. Expect to teach yourself a lot of the material AND DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS
Grade mostly comes from exams, but he is pretty good about giving partial credit if you show your work. You could do an entire problem wrong with the right formula and still get 7/10 points. Get ready to work your butt off and teach your self a lot. This is NOT the class to slack off in. Passed bc I went to weekly tutor group and walk in tutor
Had a horrendous experience with him. In lecture he seems nice. However he's NOT helpful at all in office hours. Would say material was, "easy" or "simple" but if it was I wouldn't be in your office still so confused. Tests were VERY HARD and had little to do with his notes and lectures. Does not seem to care about students or their success.
A little hard to understand and keep up with during lectures, however, I thought he was very helpful in office hours and his exam are the easiest thing you'll ever take
Lectures are kind of useless, learned nothing from them. However, see him outside of class during office hours, and you will learn a lot. Fair grader for open response/math questions on exams. If you want to do well in class, you have to be willing to put in an effort.
He is unorganized and would often times repeat lectures, as a result his classes were behind the other CHM 101 classes. Multiple choice questions are weighted very heavily on his tests and getting one wrong could drop you a letter grade. He was also rude to some students who asked questions during lecture.
Not a good teacher. His exams do not reflect what he teaches during his lectures. Not much better one on one. His online lecture notes are so confusing. I feel like I am teaching myself the class. No TA available. The Dept needs to review his teaching methods. Avoid him if possible. Otherwise it will make for a stressful semester.
Nice guy, but as a teacher he has been one of the worst. He has know clue what he is talking about. I went to office hours and he did not answer my questions, rarely answered emails, and made calculation errors on exams and in class notes. So check all your exams after you get them back. You can pass this class use Youtube. You teach yourself.
I had him for CHM101 and I did really well. However the course for 112 was much harder. The material is harder and teaching yourself is your only bet. The lectures get cut short which is nice until you realize you know nothing for the exam. The exams have questions that actually make no sense because he makes multiple errrors on them. Nice guy tho.
Dr. Mcgregor is a nice man but not a great teacher. He spends all of class doing random problems and calculations but does not explain what they have to do with the class. Class ended early every class. Exams had nothing to do with the material that he went over in class. Definitely have to teach yourself. Final was easier than other exams
Chemistry is not my favorite subject, but McGregor was a solid professor. To succeed you do need to read and do work outside of class, which he tells you. His lectures are good and he is helpful during office hours, especially before exams. I would recommend him for chemistry and happy he was my professor for chem 101.
Great guy. Took all my chem courses with him. Put in the work and you'll be fine.
Unless you like to sit and watch problems be redone several times from mistakes, class is almost pointless. My grades became higher from not going to lecture with this professor. Invest in the book and go find other sources to learn from.
If you show that you appreciate his class (good student or not), then he will be more than happy to help you. He is passionate about organic chemistry, and loves any question that is thrown at him. You do, however, have to put in a lot of time outside of class in order to do well, but he gives you just enough information to learn on your own.
First year at URI (2018) and I am being forced to take chem for my major. Lectures are semi-pointless because his sharpie marker notes are just copied from the online notes. Gets the examples wrong in class often. Tests are hard and each one is 23% of your grade. Doesn't reply to emails or give all the information you will need for the test.
He is a great professor and really cares about his students. As long as you pay attention in class and keep up with the work it isn't a bad class. Great guy
I took honors and AP chem in high school and did really well. I got an 80 on the first exam and then a 64 and a 69 on the next 2. I would sit in the tutoring center for hours and nothing I did helped on these exams. The lectures are pointless and I did homework during them instead. Read book and find a tutor because you have to teach yourself.
Not taking again, Mcgregor side tracks too much and gets way off topic which then screws us for the exams. Felt unprepared for all exams because of his style of teaching and lack of powerpoints for reference.
Didn't teach anything in lecture at all! All material you had to learn on your own. A lot of homework that was barely worth anything and were graded on just the tests and the final. On the final he told us what was going to be on it, but then completely changed it and put material on that we hadn't even covered and none of what he said was on it.
I failed the first exam after studying long and hard and I felt that I was going to receive a horrible grade in the class, but with the AEC tutor group and going to Professor McGregors office hours I improved drastically. If Professor McGregor knows you care about your grade and are trying your best he will help you out and you will be fine.
I went to every class and still failed every exam. There was a lot of homework and he was a very hard grader. He was very off topic in class and did not teach much while we were in there. He did not have any powerpoints or study guides. Very hard to pass this class.
He doesn't have any clear notes and class daily consists of a piece of paper, an expo marker, and what he decides to write down that day. He expects you to know things he hasn't taught, and will teach you those topics AFTER the test. Horrible professor.
He does not have a solid set of notes, just draws structures in class on the projector. His points are extremely unclear and he often goes off on tangents that don't necessarily pertain to the lecture. Although he doesn't rely on the textbook, going to class won't help much and you're better off teaching yourself. AWFUL professor in my opinion
Professor McGregor is a caring teacher who tries to connect his lectures to things outside of his class. His lectures consist of taking notes in front of the class. He does often make mistakes in his math, but fixes them before moving on.
This guy came into class every single day and did the same exact calculations and explained nothing and got it wrong half the time. Exam questions r not seen once in class and he grades like a hardo. This guy is an absolute clown he literally doesn't know how to teach. It is the most boring and pointless waste of time to take chm112 with this goof
His lectures are completely useless, he only does examples where he makes mistakes more often than not. You basically have to teach yourself and also he does NOT reply to emails so don't bother. Thinks everyone in the room knows chemistry as well as him already. Smart guy, bad teacher.
Take mcgregor only if you want to fail this class and retake it with another professor
Orgo is obviously a difficult subject on it's own, and Dr. McGregor does no decent job helping with that. His lectures consist of him walking in with a pen and a blank piece of paper and he goes over random reactions with no explanations or emphasis on anything. Exams are exceptionally difficult compared to lecture material. Worst professor.
I have never seen a bigger idiot in my life. absolutely useless and a waste of a professor. Do not take him because he will make you want to drop out of college.
This man might be the worst professor I have ever gotten. He would make mistakes every class and have to get corrected by students. I once helped him start a simulation by telling him to press the play button which was right in front of him, he told me I'd get an A for the class, that turned out to be a lie.
Professor McGregor is many things, but he is not a good teacher. While he allegedly posseses a doctorette in chemistry, as he reiterates constantly, he has no skills whatsoever in spread this knowledge. He constantly makes mistakes while teaching off of a piece of handwrittien paper and provides to his students no real chemistry information.
Professor McGregor is a chem professor, but a good one... no. Try to avoid getting him as a professor. He writes on a piece of paper with a dry erase marker for the notes in class.
I got a 5 in ap chem but this doesnt mean u will pass orgo 2 with mcgregor. wow. what a man. i can even describe he is still teaching. it is christmas and he has nothing up on the gradebook yay!
For anyone taking CHM 101 at URI, whatever you can do to avoid having this man as your professor, do it. He teaches nothing, never uses the textbook, takes little to no notes, and you can barely hear him in the lecture hall. I took chemistry and AP chemistry in high school and his lecture makes you feel like you are losing chemistry brain cells.
Takes him about 5 business days to respond to an email, if you get a response at all that is. He waited until the absolute last day to put in grades and even then he makes numerous mistakes and only corrects them at his own convenience. Doesn't care for individual students, if you need help don't bother asking, just go to a testing center.
The chemistry department at the University of Rhode Island is a waste of money. Youre better off taking organic anywhere else. I saw him before every exam, he knew I knew what I was doing but his exams were poorly written and honestly confusing. He failed me and never reached out, couldnt return an email. Thats a bad professor.
Uri chem department disappoints again. Avoid at all costs. Fully asynchronous this semester and never responded to emails. Takes weeks to grade the exams. Doesnt post practice exams. Uploaded all 10 lectures at the beginning of the semester. Exams written and Wiley w/ lockdown browser. I havent learned anything
One of the most fun chemistry classes I have ever taken! Even though everything is online for this class, he makes it engaging and, dare I say, fun, to learn OChem. Definitely reccomend taking 228 with Mcgregor.
I don't have words for this man. He is the worst professor I have ever had. Be ready to teach yourself all of organic chemistry, his lectures just make it even more difficult to understand. Comes to class with an expo marker and blank piece of paper to write random reactions on. Take this class only if you want to fail or dropout.
Very poor professor. Lectures are all over the place and very difficult to follow. Random reactions drawn out and have no relevance to exam questions. Don't bother studying for his exams, they're impossible no matter how hard you try to learn the material. Teaches as if you already know everything, avoid at all costs. (this is putting it nicely)
Despite URI CHM dept being a disaster, this takes the crown. He teaches like you already know what's happening. Practice exams are useless. Youtube is a better prof. If u have the money, go elsewhere for orgo. I though Dr. Ngo was bad, she was better than this. Exam avs have never been over a C and reached a 55 at one point.
Please don't take this class. There is absolutely NO lecture powerpoint slides. All he does is write on a piece of computer paper with a fat black expo marker. He doesnt respond to emails. He is a very tough grader. He is literally the cutest old man ever but an awful teacher. Avoid at all possible costs.
This class was terrible. He was not helpful at all and his lectures were all over the place. He always got example problems wrong and the students in his class had to correct him. If i had to do it again id say pay attention in lecture and study in your free time. He grades hard and takes off a lot of points for small things.
Dr. McGregor is a little all over the place, and the exam grades reflect that for sure. Theres barely any structure in the class, and thats what makes it difficult. Content wise, it was manageable if you practiced a lot outside of class. Hes a very nice guy though, very passionate about ochem, and does drop the lowest exam grade at the end.
Please do not take this class unless you really need too, he is a nice man but a horrible horrible teacher. Would never recommend this class to anyone.
Although his lectures are unorganized and hard to follow, I quickly realized his teaching method was not compatible with my learning style. I really focused more on studying on my own time by watching his videos, other helpful tutors online and practicing the material. You can tell where the important content is versus background info! Overall okay
his practice exams are nothing like the real exams
Uses paper and sharpie to teach his lectures. Doesn't give any information, barely any notes all examples. Also doesn't explain or stay organized. Lectures just bounce around no structure, nice guy and all but definitely stuck in the 1800s with his teaching methods.
This is my favorite chemistry class I've taken. McGregor adds lots of real world examples, making lectures interesting. Yes, lectures have absolutely no structure. However, he explains everything clearly, and gives ample practice in class. The class never once felt rushed and stressful like 227 did, and exams are ok. Study the notes from class.
He is a nice guy and has some humor, but not the best teacher. He teaches like we should already know the material and is very disorganized. Never answers emails. Exam averages are normally are 65 which isn't good. I feel like he has so much knowledge and just doesn't know how to teach it.
This class sucked. He doesn't use powerpoint and just kind of talks at you for the entire lecture. He also has a tendency to mess up then fix them so don't write in pen if taking notes in class. Also watch out most of his exams are in person and on paper and even though they together make up 80% of your grade they often are less than 20 questions.
