Yes, he is strict, but he is fair and honest. He listens to each and every student and encourages class discussion. Pay attention in class, read the book (the book is actually interesting), and you will pass.
A great techer. Makes things interesting by always having some sort of class interactions. Makes learning easy by not being picky about dates of events. Clearly communicates lectures.
he is very nice and he is willing to help u get the course with the best grade and of course u have to do a lot reading but his class is easy overall
Very Easy just read the book; in class lectures only help on essays... but just use blackboard for his notes
The only things graded are two pop quizzes (that are completely unrealistic), a speech (easy), and a paper. He told us if we did the reading we would be fine on the pop quizzes, I actually read and I failed them. The book was really interesting, learned tons! He is a tough grader, especially on the paper. I got a "B".
WAY to MUCH WORK for online internet class.
Easy and interesting! You have 3 quizes, 1 presentation and 10 days to answer a final question at the end of the semester. He is really nice! do the reading and you'll be fine!
I took this class in the summer and it was pretty easy. He lectures for about 2 hours, so prepare yourself. The assignments are two papers and a powerpoint presentation, along with two pop quizes. I would recommend taking this class if you are determined and are willing to go to every class. He takes attendance in t/ begining of class and after bre
Summer Session
Seems like a nice teacher... but an enormous amount of work, especially for an online class.
Don't take as an online class, requires way too much work.
SOOOOO much work for an online class. It's not even funny.
I was quick to judge this teacher, yes he requires alot of work for an online class but it's easy (just time consuming) and you only have 1 paper 3-page, 1 research project, and 1 question for the final. It's not too bad once you get to the end.
Nice guy but I agree with the other posts. Way too much work for an on-line class. I did like the mp3 lectures which made it easier to complete the class but the weekly assignments were crazy. If you are a working adult I would not recommend this class. It's a time sucker and he's strict on deadlines...we're talking seconds late.
This was the WORST online class I have ever taken. He never posted our grades for the assignments so we never knew how we did or if we were doing it right. It felt like he only taught this class b/c he had to and he hated it. By the end I didn't care what kind of grade I had, I just wanted it over. I would NEVER recommend him to anyone!!
Hard/Easy...If u dont like work, dont take the online class!!!! It's a lot of reading. It's not that hard though, u just have to put a lot of time on it. He lectures online, gives u power point presentations, and u have the book, and u can always search online. One 3-page paper, hw every week, one project n a final. Good luck!!!!
The class is way to much work not only for a online class but for any class. The bigest problem is the deadlines are so close together!
It was an online/summer class. I work full time and there is no way you could finish the assignments by the deadline. It is the end of the class and I don't know not even one grade.I don't know if I did good or bad, I did not receive any feedback. It's tones of reading and time consuming/assigments + stressed by time. The hardest online class ever.
There is a lot of work in this on-line class, but if you can manage your time you will do fine. There are 2 weekly assignments with lectures on mp3 and powerpoint- each one is approx. 1 hour, and you will need another to do your synopsis and questions. Textbook reading is additional time. Yes, it is work-- but the professor is very fair.
Online class w/ real mp3 lectures. It takes time to actually listen to the lectures, type up a synopsis, and answer questions each week--about 2 hrs. He always responds to email. However, doesn't post any grades so you really have to put your all in b/c he doesn't give any feedback.
Took this online over summer, too much work and dropped it. Took it in the Fall and did well. Love the lectures. HATE all the writing that is due every week! NO FEEDBACK. I had NO IDEA what my grade was going to be or if i was doing anything right even after emailing him. Somehow i got an A, i have no idea how. I'd recommend but not over summer!!!
Took his Internet coarse over the spring. Very difficult there is a lot of work to do and it is easy to fall behind. I do not recomend
why do professors have to kill passion and intrest with structure and conformity? this subject and the material should be entertaining and exciting instead he makes you focus so much on reguritating his lectures and writing as if you were enrolled at columbia that you don't actually learn or absorb anything that he covers. class needs a prep course
I took the online course. There were good and bad things about this course. Pros: His voice is easy to listen to and his lectures are entertaining. The class is not difficult if you are smart. Cons: This class should require a pre-req. course. If you're unfamiliar with history it's easy to get lost in his lectures. Overall...B+.
Took his online course. Very easy work, just consuming! 2 online pre-recorded lecture with powerpoint per week. Each lecture takes anywhere between 1.5 - 2.5 hours to listen to. Didn't use the book at all. VERY nice teacher and EXTREMELY clear with lectures/topics. Would recommend him to anyone. No tests with a 1 question, open book final.
Hardest On-line class I have ever taken, WaYYYYYYYYYY too much work, almost like a full time job. If you have a job, or any other classes, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I took his online class over the summer, so it's at accelerated speed. It was quite time consuming. The only time I had off of work was spent on this homework. I barely had any freetime. But he's a good teacher and if you do the work, you should pass.
I took this online 8 week course this summer. I work part time and have a toddler. I like that the lectures are on mp3, download it to my ipod and listened to it at the beach or in the car. Never had to open the book unlike most online classes. You dont know where you stand grade wise, so I was nervous even though I was doing the work. I got an A a
Lectures very interesting! enjoyabke to listen to NOT boring..Liked the class
Took the online course in 8 weeks last semester. I didn't even buy the book, just listen to the lectures and follow along with powerpoint, take notes and email it in each week, he just wants to know your listening to it and using powerpoint. Did most of the discussion board postings late but still got some credit for it. Final was an essay with ch
I took this online course over the summer and loved it ,I've never been so interested in history before!! I loved his lectures, and because they were on mp3 I could take my 3 kids to the pool and gets some work done listening to my ipod!!!
Taking his online class right now. IS extremely interested in the subject and loves teaching it. Yes the work is very time consuming, but do a good job of formatting it & then type everything in that is in his powerpoints & random bullets from lecture, and he will be happy. Yes he doesn't post grades but email him & will get back to you in a week.
Professor McKinney is very interesting and extremely helpful. Unlike most online teachers I have had, he puts the effort into making powerpoint lectures AND mp3 lectures for you to listen to and follow along. His lectures are consistently an hour long each, but they are worth listening to. Doesn't update grades, ever, but assignments are easy.
(online)Great teacher! Learned ALOT about the subject even though I do not like history at all. That just goes to show how engaging his mp3 lectures are. If you want the A, he tells you how to get it. If you do not get it, sorry, but its your fault.
I have taken History 16 and 22 and I am taking 17 fall. It's easy to get an A in this class. Be succinct and pay attention. There are no tests, the final is an essay. One research project is due at the end of term. The lectures and synopsis are time consuming but if you pay good attention you will get an A easily.
I took Prof McKinney's online summer school course. He makes history interesting and easy to relate to. His lectures are long and at times hard to listen to because they are actual recordings oh his prior classes. HOWEVER, I really enjoyed his class and his approach on the history of the US. Highly recommended. There is only one test, the final!!
I definitely recommend taking McKinney. He makes his lectures very interesting and knows how to keep the students attention. One thing about this class is that his lectures are very time consuming. There are audio's of him every week (sometimes 2), and powerpoints to go with them. These usually took me a couple of hours if not more to finish.
So far, he's a great teacher...taking his online course and his voice is extremely easy to listen to...it is VERY time consuming, but as long as you keep up with the work, you'll actually enjoy it
Took online. This means there is a lot of work. Plan on putting in 10-15 week for A if your a normal person like me.CANT go wrong if you designate the time in. Not hard, just consuming. DONT put off research assignment and Final until the end work on each a couple hours a week to create a foundation. Use discussion board! dont leave short responses!
Took it online 8 weeks. He provides mp3 lectures, PowerPoint and lots of material to study, I used the book for extra research only. Tons of homework, however his method is great, made it very interesting, I learned A LOT. Ethical and professional. Excellent Professor. If you want to really learn take him.
8 week online U.S. history class. It is A LOT of work, but I have learned more in this class than any other class I have taken. Be prepared to spend at minimum 4-10 hours per week listening to online lectures, taking notes, and writing a synopsis of the lecture. Grade is 30% lecture synopsis 30% discussion board 25% PP project and 15% final.
I took his online HIST22 course and it was awesome. I absolutely hate history but uring his class i actualy learned alot. There is a lot of info but between the powerpoint and mp3 your good. Take good notes and stay on top of your work and easily you'll get through it.
Let me tell you just one thing: Plan spending AT LEAST 8 hours a weak. And if you're a procrastinator that's at least 8 hours on 2 days, Saturday and Sunday... Very hard syllabus, but clear, helpful, and serious teacher
This class is very time consuming. My interest in U.S. History was very low, but after taking this class I ended up learning a lot, and having a new appreciation for American History. Professor McKinney is helpful and responsive. I took the 8-week class, but I recommend a full semester class. I received an A, but I worked hard and was inspired.
Taking his online class, there about 16 segments in total. each week you have to listen to MP3s and powerpoints than answer some discussion questions. NO EXAMS OR QUIZZES. One project and essay question due at the end. Essay class but lots of work.
Do not even waste your time registering for this, even if you are unsure and are thinking about dropping it after seeing what the class is like. It is a huge amount of work and its rather ridiculous for history. I'm not a student who likes easy A teachers. I'm a student who likes to put forth 100% effort and learn a lot. But, I do hate history.
I really enjoyed this class. I took it online in 8 weeks. You need to keep up with the work but I wouldn't consider it very difficult. His lectures are actually very helpful and engaging ... I was expecting to hate them. He's one of the good ones; I highly recommend this class and teacher.
I liked his online course. I learned a lot from him because he was very clear and informative. Coursework is pretty light and easy; just show sincere effort. Be forewarned: his one final question at the end of the semester is an essay so don't procrastinate on the research project!
Prof. McKinney is an amazing teacher, very clear. I loved PS after taking his class. He is fair and has no party bias. Great, Great teacher... you will learn a lot in his class!
All this class is, is notes from his online lectures. You can do a bullet point outline. It's not hard just do the segments per week. No test or quizzes. Also, you have a research powerpoint project and a essay due at the end, but its not hard. Stay on top of the work. I did a max of 3 hours a week for this class.
No quizzes/exams. Weekly discussion questions, a synopsis of chapter lectures, historical docs, & text reading; the final was an in-depth final discussion question & a PowerPoint presentation. Mr. McKinney’s lectures are clear & concise & afterwards, I felt that I had a very good understanding of the material.
Never cracked the book. Fully reliance on lectures and powerpoint. Took about 3-4 hours a week to complete. Course material accessible on my phone as well so I could lecture while driving. No grade updates online, but email for it. Overall great class, actually learned. Take the course if you don't know anything about History, he will explain.
The 8-week course consists of 2 Chapter synopsis' each week, one research project on a subject he lets you choose, and one easy essay final. The course was not hard at all, just a moderate amount of work. It consisted of about 4 hours of work a week. Like the person below, I never used the book. I would definitely recommend this course!
WAAAY too much work. I'm a straight A student and got a B in this class. He says that you rarely need the textbook but then says that you need to incorporate it into everything?? His lectures skim the topics. Wouldn't recommend. I regret taking this course.
The course is very intense and demands lots of work. However, it is worth it. Mr McKinney gives very clear instructions and his lectures are awesome! He provides details and explanations to events that really help you to understand history. He is also very helpful! Great course with a great instructor!
Tons of work. Audio lectures and historical documents requiring weekly synopsis, multiple discussion board postings. No tests, but a detailed final exam essay in addition to a research powerpoint. You learn a lot from this class, but be prepared to devote a minimum 8-10 hours per week for the requirements. He responds to email within 48 hours.
I am a full time student and employee and thought this class would be simple...oh how i was wrong. Basically you shouldn't take this class unless you have the spare time to do it. ALOT ALOT OF WORK. I was consumed by this class, I had less work in my other four classes which didnt even add up to the amount of work in this class.
This class was a lot of work, but I learned a lot. The mp3 lectures are really long so if you're not a history fan like me, you'll find it boring. But do all of the work and you'll be fine, doesn't grade things hard.
I took this class, a long with two others during summer. I withdrew and will take by another teacher in the fall because he had so much busy work. You have to listen to multiple lectures (1.5 hours ea) and e-mail him a synopsis so he can make sure you listened, a long with a summary of an article. Not to mention the essay and real homework.
I would recommend him to any student that needs to take this class for General Ed or Major! He is extremely helpful and responds to emails really quickly. He tells you how you are doing in the class and his lectures are clear to learn something with history that you aren't really interested in. Lots of week activities - did in full one day!
Summer class. He had us type up a summary of his lectures he posted online, a summary of a primary source, and send that in. On Blackboard, you had to post your thoughts on the segment and an answer to a question he posts, as well as comment and respond to other's posts. It was an easy class, but amounted to a lot of work. Didnt use the book much.
I have taken Hist 16 & 22 with McKinney; he is fantastic! He loves the subject and it shows. I enjoyed his lectures even though they are long at times. The book is not necessary ever, don't waste the money. Listen to his lectures, read his power points and any additional documentation he suggests and you will do great. Effort goes a long way!
Syllabus lays out the entire course and you could literally complete all 16 segments in the first week if so inclined. As long as you keep up you will do well, as long as you follow the syllabus, you can obtain an A. Some traditional reading material, some online, good class and learned the subject.
Taking this class online, a lot of work but do-able and easy. Super easy material. Each week there is a powerpoint/ audio lecture summary, article summary, and discussion post due. Barely even need the textbook at all. If you take good notes and write lengthy summaries, youll do just fine. Your grade reflects the amount of effort you put in.
This was such an easy class to take online. There were no tests and the only work expected was to write summaries of his lectures that he posts and to write in the discussion board regarding the topic for the week. I did not need the textbook at all and he was good at communicating what was expected. It was a good subject matter and an easy A
Very nice, responds quickly, helpful, very fair and unbiased. Lots of work. No book needed. Take notes while listening to audio and that can be your summary. No quizzes or tests other than one essay. Final is a Powerpoint presentation. You can do two for extra credit. 2-3 lectures per week & 5 discussion posts per lecture. Time consuming.
Professor McKinney is okay. His course work is a lot, especially for the online portion. You'll pass the class with active participation on the online course, but overall, you really need to work for your grade. I did slack off a little bit towards the end of the semester, and turned in a few assignment late, and he was still very considerate of it
I took History 22 online with McKinney and he was very clear with what he wanted out of students from day one. Every week we would listen to 1 or 2 lectures that were about an hour long, after we wrote a response to the lecture, and after that you would do discussion board post. Great teacher, easy to contact, but tons of work.
Prof McKinney is an amazing professor, his lectures were clear and easy to follow. The weekly discussion board posts were simple and straightforward as were the assignments each week. Overall , it was the best online course I've taken. Awesome professor and class, would strongly recommend taking his class.
Being my first online class, I was a little worried. The class was very demanding for work and I had to take ample time to adequately complete the assignments. With that being said, his online lectures are clear and easy to follow with an accomplanying PowerPoint. If you work hard, you'll earn an A. He's a good guy!
Don't want to say the class was easy, but it wasn't rigorous at all. You don't really need to read the textbook bc he has very in depth audio lectures and powerpoints. You do have to write a synopsis after each segment that includes info from the slides and the audio. Responds to emails efficiently. I would recommend
Took this class online for the first eight weeks. I wasn't bothered by the work of the class, which was a lot, but it was hard to contact the professor. He was bad at replying to emails and I didn't hear about any of my assignment grades until I saw the final grade on my transcript. That being said, you'll definitely get an A if you put in the work
Professor McKinney is awesome. He knows his stuff and you actually learn in the class. His online class can be a lot of work in the beginning, but it really isn't that bad once you get used to it. Easy grader, easy to contact, interesting lectures.
McKinney is an AMAZING lecturer. In fact, I'm keeping all of his lectures on file. They are detailed and non-partisan. I have found that to be a problem in college history and political science classes that many professors attempt to ram leftist agendas down malleable students' throats. Not McKinney. This is the PS1 class to take!
When I first took this class I noticed how much work it was and it scared me at first. However, once you start incorporating this into your day, it honestly is not that bad. His lectures are so interesting and it actually helps you understand history so much more clear. He is a very good professor even though the 8 week course is a lot of work.
I took Professor Mckinney for History 16 and PS 1. The class is really easy once you get used to it and it really is an easy A if you do all the work. The only problem is that he is not good at responding to emails so I would not say he is easily accessible. If you're someone that likes to ask questions I would not recommend taking him.
I took his online class. Its hard because of the large volume of material but becomes easy once you get used to it. I almost just copied his entire ppt adding a bit from his audio lecturegot an A. I hate how he doesnt update the grades on Canvas and you have to email him about your grade. It also wasnt specific, onlu said high A.
Very monotonous but easy class. Every week you listen to the lecture (1.5-2.75 hours) and turn in a summary of the lecture and and article and then participate in a discussion board. He doesn't use the only classroom for grading so you don't know your grade until the end of the semester. There is a project and a written final but he grades nice.
Mr. McKinney is a professor that is very knowledgeable in his line of work. If you read the assigned pages, listen to the lectures, and do the work, you will be just fine. Like Mr. McKinney says, "work hard and do your personal best" and you will make it. Great teacher!
I enjoyed his lectures a lot. His class was only synopsis' and summaries based off of the recorded lectures (along with powerpoint slides) and discussions each week. The final was a paper. He responds emails really quickly. You can email to ask what your grade is b/c it's not shown until the end of the class.
You have two lectures to listen to every week that can be anywhere from 1.30-2 hours long EACH. You have to write a synopsis about the lecture, as well as a summary regarding a historical document that he lets you pick from. You email him the papers every week and do a discussion. HE DOES NOT FILL OUT GRADES SO YOU HAVE TO EMAIL HIM
Each week consists of lectures that are 1.5 hours. And a summary of a historical document. Honestly I thought it was going to be worse then what it actually was. The only negative thing was he doesnt put grades in canvas! So e-mail him and ask! Take him, it honestly wasnt that bad.
If you are looking for a teacher look elsewhere. This is a 100% asynchronous class and the teacher is essentially a ghost. There's no due dates, the syllabus dates were wrong, and I felt like I learned nothing. He doesn't actually teach you anything. FIND A DIFFERENT TEACHER.
Everything is clearly in the syllabus, listen to the lecture, go through the PPT, take notes and give a synopsis + discussion. This class was rough at first but you get used to the work load, he is an amazing teacher that is easy to reach out to and he is very responsive. This teacher is great and I would highly recommend taking his class.
I genuinely really enjoyed this class, one of my favorites I have ever taken. There is a lot of information for a short period of time, so you really have to dedicate time and effort to it. If you dont find it interesting, it will be harder to get through. At the end of the day he is looking for effort, so just care a little and you will do great!
Prof. McKinney is a great lecturer, and he makes what might be a menial subject like history more intriguing. He expects the best work, so you'll need to put in effort for assignments. This class is a lot- between lecture, assignments, and discussions, I easily spent 9+ hrs/week, so be aware! Also, oddly, you have to email him to see your grades.
No due dates and lots of writing. No teaching at all.
If you have to work this course is not for you. You will have multiple 2+ hour lectures to summarize and other documents to study, providing summaries and participating in discussions. He also refuses to use canvas. Didn't find out I turned all of my coursework in wrong until the last few days, that information was buried in a 20 page syllabus.
Taking this class over the Summer was a good experience. The class was 2-3 1hr 30 Pre-Recorded lectures per week for 8 weeks. The lectures follow the slides. Mr. McKinney responds quickly and gave me feedback so I knew I was doing the synopses correctly. Historical Summaries are very easy. Final is a power point and questions which were easy.
Lectures were around 1.5 hours, and we had to do a synopsis on the lecture and a summary on a primary source, plus two responses on a discussion post weekly. Pretty easy, I would say, very straightforward. his lectures aren't to boring and very informative. No midterm, but there was a research project and a final with two prompts to choose from.
Really interesting lectures, easy assignments consisting of typed lecture notes, summaries of historical documents, and discussion posts. Type the notes while listening to the lecture and it makes it super easy. He doesn't grade assignments until the end but if you follow the expectations, it's an easy A. He is very good at responding to email also
Very lecture and homework heavy, however I took the 8 week-long online course. I spent approximately 6-7 hours per week on this course and the hardest part is that nothing was graded until the course was over - so it was difficult to know if I was doing everything properly. However, his lectures were great and thorough, which was really helpful.
