haha, this guy is funny in a weird way. not many people like him ... what's his job again?

This guy actually likes interacting with students a lot. He is extremely helpful at his office hours. However, don't expect everything he tells you to be sugar-coated: he's there to tell you the harsh truth of life. By the way, This guy is hot because he likes wearing shorts.
A great guy- truly enjoys helping the students. But why, oh why does everyone in the friggin class have to get raped by the curve?
He has an extremely annoying high-pitched squeal of a voice. Once you get past that one obstacle, Meighan gets worse. He is extremely condescending, very rude, a terrible writer, and very unreasonable when responding to reasonable requests. His lectures are worthless to attend; he talks far too fast for understanding. Don't take his class.
terrible professor. simply terrible.
This man responds to misunderstanding with hostility. If you ask a question, its like you are questioning him. He is rude, and his exams are ridiculous. YOu can read the lab manual over, and you may pass, but he makes the exams so as to intimidate his students. Go to office hours if you dont mind feeling like a six inch tall retard.
Hardest 2-unit class I've taken. Lab manual only makes sense if you already have background in what you are studying (hence, not good for beginning biology students). Often have to refer to Cambell or outside sources to make sense of subject matter. Readily accessible during office hours. Webcast is God.
Absolutely horrific. I would advise against taking this class and Mieghan but unfortunately, most pre-meds or science majors cannot afford the luxury.
Meighan is a miserable human being. He is a pompous, arrogant prick and his exams are way beyond what this class should be teaching, ie introductory biology. Unfortunately, he cannot be avoided so the only solution is to take a Bio 1A equivalent course somewhere else.
Since he runs this stupid class, he gets to put whatever on exams and on top of that, doesn't curve. So, be prepared or you will fail :(
You will work V.V. hard for your 2 units in Bio 1A Lab but it's kind of fun-I liked it more than Chem labs. Need to be prepared for the lab quizzes and lab exams, as they are challenging, but do-able if you crack down and study. Meighan is pretty good professor too. Bottom line: work hard and this class will rock. I loved it.
Mike Meighan is a great guy who really cares for students. He gets a bad rap. If you go to his office hours, he will do anything to help you out. His exams are really tough, and he tells you that's how it will be. But if you set your mind to it and GO to his office hours and study very very hard, you will get an A and you will learn a lot.

His exams are ridiculously hard. His lectures are also unclear at times because he crams a ton of info into a short period of time. But he's pretty helpful in office hours.
Talks too fast. Lab manual really needs to be proofread a few times. Test questions can be pretty confusing.
Lab manual is long and tedious, redundant, verbose. Lectures are unclear, crammed. Overall poor organization of course. Material isn't too hard. But the textbook and everything else make it seem so.
if u r taking this class, u will know..

I believe he is an inherently nice guy who had just entered the nadir of his mid-life crisis. If you look at his webcast lectures/reviews in the past, you'd notice that both his niceness and sense of humour are positively correlated to the amount of hair he has on his head. "Clever" exam questions, lightning-fast responses to emailed questions.
Teaches well, just never tells you what to emphasize when you learn, and needs to go about 3 times slower. The curve/grading system is stupid in that everyone thinks they're failing because the curve is not very obvious. 2nd lab exam is haard, first one is hard too. This class is hard.
Hands down a terrible Professor. Goes to fast, assumes students know concepts and ideas when most clearly don't. Lab lecture as it is a waste of time. Mike pretends to be legit but like an idiot gave out the answers to the midterm while students were taking the test on accident. What an idiot. I got an A,my harsh review is not because of a grudge
I thought this class was pretty tough. It is a must that you memorize the entire lab manual to do well. He goes way too fast in lecture. If you work hard, it should be OKAY.
Awful, awful, awful..... super unclear and not helpful... good luck next generation... HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A PhD!!! why is he teaching us?!
Whining nasal voice, talks way too fast, and he's an ****. I suggest that you do as well as you possibly can on the quizzes and on the first midterm, because you will not do well on the second midterm. It's a timed, hands-on test that you can bomb even if you have memorized the entire lab manual.
Mike voice is really irritating. He keeps saying aite aite which really annoys the heck out of me. And he goes really fast in his lecture as if he has to run home to see his wife give birth but of course he aint marry. His lab exams are hard. I think he should be fired. Lab exams are totoally useless. I learn nothing and the lab exam RUIN my grade
Worst teacher of my life!!!!! He thinks that Bio 1a is the most important class at berkeley and the ONLY class that the students are taking. Lab exams are impossible, GSI's were horrible and arrogant as well. I agree with the other posters, this man needs to be fired!
I thought he was a pretty good teacher considering the constraints of the class and the huge amount of material he had to cover. Conceptually, the class isn't difficult. There's just tons and tons of material you need to memorize. And yes, do well on the first midterm, because the second is a nightmare!
I really liked this lab class.. Yes, it is difficult, but only b/c of the amt of material and memorization required in the 2nd half of the class. And Mike is a pretty decent lecturer and I had an awesome GSI!
Talks way too fast so his lectures make no sense at all. His first lab exam is hard, but still manageable, just avoid stupid mistakes. The second lab exam is written by GSIs but is hard as it test your ability to recollect random stuff you probably didn't look at in lab. Mike, though, takes himself way too seriously and makes this class a pain.

The way he wrote the lab manual made makes me hate bio, my intended major. I think intro bio should be able to inspire interest, not depress it. I feel overwhelmed every week just thinkin about the 30 pages+ to read that are useless when the quizzes come. That being said, i haven't even taken the exam yet. AND i already feel this way.

as the class is disogrganized, he information presented is not filtered and sorted--they just throw it at you without presentation. the people who have particularly good memories and have a strong background--they thrive. Unless you have a background from high school of basic anatomy, you'll be lost becuase there is no focus.
You will wish you could take this separate from 1a. Lectures go so fast that you should probably just webcast it, since there's no time for notes. Only covers half the material anyways. Makes tests that are "challenging" for him, having taught for 18 yrs, and impossible for students. Excellent weeder. Lab sections: 3 hrs for 4 hr wk.
do people who think he's awesome seriously think the class is well-planned?
Two Words: Worst Ever
I think that Meighan is misconceived by grade mongering pre-meds. If you put your mind to it, you end up learning an incredible amount in a short period of time. Yes its a very hard class, but if you wanted to skate thru college, go be a (insert subject) Studies major. He may run the class incredibly frantically, but he's trying his best..
Mike does try to cover too much in lecture. He never finishes and his speed makes it difficult to understand what he does cover. He is very nice, helpful, and has funny stories- BUT only if you talk to him when he is not stressed. Don't ask questions before or after class, or right before the test-you will be disappointed.
He really is a good professor, speaks amazingly fast but explains stuff amazingly well. Gives very difficult exams, but thats needed to make a good curve for the class. One of the few professors who will tell you that grades aren't everything in life, which is more true than most students think.
Most of the time the material was interesting--BUT this class really took too much time, pretty much ruined my time for studying the Bio 1A Lec itself. Mike's teaching is well, but his attitude towards students is condescending, pretty much doesn't give a crap about us students. Talks to us like we're still in pre-school.
Talked super fast. Lectures were interesting though. Way too much stuff to memorize. If this course is not necessary for you, I don't recommend taking it.
This is not a class that is hard for the sake of learning, but hard for the sake of being hard. Mike, although a generally nice man, prides himself of writing “difficult”, but useless tests. His lectures up to the first midterm were somewhat satisfactory, but were quite poor for the second half of the course. Also, the lab manual wad awful. I m
Ok I just got my grade today. I am expecting at least an A- but ended up with a B. I'm not happy but I'm not going to write a biased review either. Meighan does his job and does it well. He explains things well and covers an enormous amount of material in a short perid of time. His tests are extremely difficult. GO TO OH and WATCH HIS REVIEW!
Truth to be told. I do not recommend taking this class if you are pre-med so AP out of it if you can. However, if you really want to learn something BUT DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE GRADE then by all means take this class. I had great fun interacting and learning in lab.
This was a hard class, you do a lot of work for 2 units, i studied more for this class than Bio 1A and still did bad. A lot of people don't like his class, i don't know why he has to make this class so hard, an he talks too fast during lecture, that you don't have time to take notes. Take this class only if you have to
The class is hard, but as long as you study consistantly, an A is easy.
Mike geniunely cares about his students. I think his bad rap comes from the fact that he gets frustrated with all the pre-meds who only care about grades. only instances of behavior that can be construed as condescending is in regards to grades, ie: no your grade won't be bumped up, no grades aren't based on effort, etc. tests are ok.
He talks so fast in lecture, it's crazy. He's increased the lecture by a half hour, but still goes through the material so fast. I kind of get the sense that he really wants to be "part of the club" .. like, he's not listed with MCB faculty, so makes up for it by being a total badass in 1AL
If you keep up with the material in the lab manual, then you will do well. It helps to have a decent lab instructor. The tests were challenging, and I thought the lab exam was an interesting experience. I liked Bio 1AL much more than Bio 1A.
Meighan is a really funny guy and he keeps lab lectures interesting. But his lectures go so fast and he talks so fast. The weekly lab quizzes are brutal. The lab exams are also hard, and the practical was just plain ridiculous. You LEARN a lot, but Bio 1A/AL were the harderst classes I have ever taken at Cal up to this point.
He speaks extremely quickly in lecture. I suggest reading before lecture, as he requests.Lab exam 1 is tough, but exam 2 is much harder. You must know your stuff very very well. Studying a lot for the weekly quizzes makes studying for the final exam much easier. Pay attention to subtle hints your GSI drops since he writes the second exam.
Easily the worst "professor" at Berkeley. Unfortunately, he's unavoidable.
Definitely worst professor at Berkeley. He tries to help but only ends up confusing his students. Not an encouraging professor.
Reviews here are spot on, Meighan is a TERRIBLE instructor. It hurts to fathom how he has been teaching this long... do they even read the student assessments of him? Lectures are just a blur of information he expects you to understand immediately; if you ask him to repeat anything he only becomes frustrated and repeats it faster than before.
Lectures are completely useless, even some GSIs say that. Meighan is really helpful during labs though. He's less stressed during lab so he can actually explain things clearly and helpfully. To study for Lab Exam #1 DONT watch webcasts of lectures, instead read the lab manual and do practice exams. Curves are very generous.
Thanks to Meighan, Bio 1A became a terrible experience. Few others could have turned material so interesting into a lesson on annoyance tolerance. Lectures were generally a fact spewing session of which everyone is expected to remember every detail. I dont know how he could have became a professor after only serving as class coordinator.
I was having a hard time in the class so I asked him for advice, and no, he was not condescending, but really understanding. If you can, do NOT take Bio 1A AND Bio 1AL together if you're a science math, or engineering major. Bio 1A &1AL require a lot of time and memorization. If you can, to get ahead, buy labbk early & skim over it during vacation.
While his lectures do seem organized, he conveys information in an unclear way, making it nearly useless to take notes. The lab reader is where everything is at. His tests are pretty tough, but the info is all in the reader. Meighan does care and puts a lot of time into the class, and is open to answering questions.
Meighan knows a lot of stuff but just can't lecture well. He spends 30 min going over what to cover and then the remaining hour going over what he said he was going to cover. Really confusing. Lecture is useful for first half but second half of class, study lab manual and use your GSI b/c they make your exam. LOTS of stuff to memorize for 2nd exam.
Knows his material, but horrible at lecturing. Material is not presented in a logical order. Spends a lot of time on tangents and rushes through the important material. Class seems difficult, but the curve is pretty generous.
I hated Mike Meighan. There is no other professor at Berkeley for whom I carry this much disdain. He is obnoxious, disorganized, and self-righteous. This class is a prereq and only taught by him, so get yourself a good study group and make friends with your GSI.
The person below me got it spot-on. Meighan wants to spread his own misery and anger to students. There are profs who are worse at teaching but none who combine that with Meighan's arrogance, insensitivity, and rudeness. Meighan also managed to break down an interesting subject into plain memorization, then make it confusing at that.
just say NO. take it at a community college. I managed a B but it made my life a living hell. the material is not that "hard" but he will MAKE it hard. i don't understand why he is allowed to teach. cal adminstrators suck.
Meighan talks really fast and sometimes it's like he forces his students to go back and watch the webcasts. But he tries to go over the important stuff in each lab in les than 1.5hr and he is pretty effective at that. So if you just stop complaining and spend your time going thru the manual, you'll do fine.
You're going to have to read the lab manual. He worked hard on it, but his clipart drawings still aren't that good. Second half of the class is memorization-intensive. A lot of people are slandering Mike on here, but he's really not that bad of a professor. And he seems like a pretty cool guy. Lecture is somewhat entertaining.
Bleh, Mike Meighan is the worst. 1AL emphasizes learning Meighan's little tricks and memorizing terms. He is a confusing, spazzy, unorganized lecturer. Repetitive rather than clear. To do well in this class you'll have to put in more than two units worth of your time... and I am not so willing to do this. Meighan could learn from Prof Rine.
I'd just like to say that whoever wrote the post below this one is a complete m o r o n. Anyone who thinks Rine is competent teacher of lower division material obviously enjoys not learning anything at all.
Meighan comes off as a workaholic who yells alot and takes his job too seriously. But in a weird way, he's a charming guy and brings out the science nerd in all of us. Always willing to help students and fix grades when other professors (often) mess up. The 1AL cirriculum he set up is fun and the reader he wrote is concise. Study it religiously.
saying that this is a hard class would be an understatement. if there was 1 thing i could do diff. it would be to have gone to OH more, hes very helpful. also you want to get a good gsi but that's out of your control. this class was so freakn hard.make sure you do well on the 1st MT b/c thats a BIG factor in your final grade, more so than the final
The lab manual is terrible: out of order and really unclear. The grading aside from two cram-fest midterms is based only on how much minutia you were able to memorize before your lab: YOU ARE NOT GRADED ON LAB WORK! Which must be his decision. Don't make my mistake: study for every lab like it was a midterm then you'll do well and be ready.
Hardest 2 unit class I've ever taken. He's very efficient & clear in his lectures. Too much focus on memorization: with so many details you need to know, concepts get lost. There's also a heavy focus on time: quizzes, lab practical (ridiculous: you have 1min40sec to answer the questions at each station). But he's a great lecturer and very fair.
He's a really good professor. He spends so much time on this class, in lecture, OH, and in your labs to help you out. It is a fun class if you don't complain and just try to learn the material. Oh and I never went to lecture...and barely webcasted. Just read the manual, and the review webcasts he posts from previous years.
Dear Mike Meighan, I learned a lot in Bio 1A. However, you made the class a living hell. When your single-transmembrane insulin receptors with a cytoplasmic tail begin failing and your proto-oncogenes in your epithelial cells turn cancerous, you will realize that there is more to life than making impossible exams for your students. May every rat y
Very helpful professor who puts in sooo much time into his class. Besides his 1AL class (which he lectures), he's always there during 1A lecture, and office hours and during lab as well. He's not a good lecturer but his enthusiasm makes up for it. Each lecture starts real slow and then he panics and starts talking a mile a minute.
Meighan is very enthusiastic and seems to pour his heart and soul into Bio1AL lectures, the lab manual, etc. Despite that, however, he is a horrific lecturer. Definately would recommend learning the lab manual backwards and forwards, and getting as many practice exams for MT1 as one possibly can. Bio majors, be vigilant, and just trudge through it.
This 2-unit class took much more time and effort than all my other classes combined. Meighan is a terrible lecturer and makes the exams at a level of difficulty much higher than needed for an introductory biology lab class. The material would actually be interesting if taught by anyone other than Meighan.
You can tell Mike really cares about his students, despite what most people seem to think. It was definitely the hardest course I've taken at Cal yet, but it was well worth it. I learned so much, it's crazy. Go to his office hours!!! I got study advice from him that really worked, and which I use in all of my science courses now.
He acted nasty, mad, and hurtful to some of his students. It was kind of surprising really. I've met plenty of disrespectful people here, but he goes out of the way to be rude and mean. I actually don't have any problem with his lecture style. I thought the class was very good and very hard. But he was still rather insulting. And I got an A+/A
BIO 1A/L iS THE WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN AT CAL. Though Mike Meighan does make the class unnecessarily stressful, he is a really really nice guy. He is super helpful in office hours, so I suggest going.
Honestly, this class is WAY more work than 2 units should be, but the curve is actually pretty generous. To do well, definitely review the labs every week, use the practice exams, and go to OH b/c Mike is actually pretty helpful then. Also, hope people in your lab score high on the lecture exams.
Overall it was a good class, I learned a lot. Mike does make the class unnecessarily stressful. It is the hardest 2 units class I have taken. Put in your best work, hope you get a good GSI, do well on first midterm, score above average on your quizzes relative to the section, group study for the second midterm - you'll do fine.
WAY more work than 2 units should ever be, but I don't think it would be possible to have it any other way. It's tough getting used to Meighan, but he's actually MUCH more helpful in OH, esp. when the exam comes up. Do the readings before lecture, do the practice exams, go to OH, and you'll be ok.
okay, so this guy wasn't really so bad after all. I was expecting it to be terrible, but the work was manageable as long as you kept up and went to office hours to ask him questions. The lab exams aren't too bad if you practiced for them, and the manual is essential (u will be going over it CONSTANTLY).
This class was ridiculous. It's also a big prereq for all the science majors, so there's no getting out of it. That said, if you put in all the effort (more than 2 units worth) and try to enjoy the fun parts of the class (meighan's pretty funny), it's all worth it in the end. Still the hardest class at cal though.
There could not possibly have been more work for a 2 unit class. Totally ridiculous. Maybe not Mike's fault, but there was simply too much material. He talks really fast in lecture to get through the material and the practical lab final was pretty absurd. You get about 90-120 seconds each station, and it would be hard enough if you had all day.
He is the biology coordinator and I went to his office for some advice on transferring courses. While I was there he proceeded to lecture me on how students who study environmental sciences & ecology are actually just slackers looking for an easy way into med school.I found this view point extremely narrow minded coming from someone in his position
By far the most inept lecturer, if that?s what you even want to call him. Clearly he has to overcompensate for the fact that he holds no merit when it comes to research/ academics. Here?s a bright idea- how about you make the material interesting to learn, instead of having every student resent you by the end of the class. Just a thought.
While the O chem teachers transform monotony into fun, Meighan is a champion of doing the opposite. Pompous and arrogant, his only pleasure in life seems to be making students suffer. After looking at what I learned in the other classes, I realized I didn't even learn much in 1AL. The only reason it seems that way is because Meighan makes it hard.
Definitely one of the hardest labs I've ever taken here. I thought Prof. Meighan was pretty energetic and funny during lecture, so I'm not sure what all the fuss is all about. The material seemed straightforward. The 1st exam was reasonable, but the 2nd one was absolute hell. Make sure you do well on the 1st exam to make up for the practical!
He put me to sleep every single lecture. The material wasn't boring; it was just his voice droning on and on. I am very grateful to my GSIs, because without them, I really would have failed this class. Make sure you study study study for the exams. I ended up doing well, but all I wanted to do whenever I saw him was yell WHY MIKE MEIGHAN WHYYYYYYYY
Biology is one of my favorite topics but after taking BIO1AL with Meighan, I now hate it to the guts. I don't understand why Cal would hire such ridiculous lecturers who are incapable of inspiring students about such important topics. Year after year, 100s of students are being discouraged. Cal would be a better institution without Mike Meighan.
He knows his stuff. But he talks WAY too quickly in class and is very unclear. His sentences are broken so you spend most of the lecture trying to figure out what he just said 2 seconds ago. I understand he has a lot of material to cover, but I usually get out of lecture more confused than I was before the lecture.
He definitely makes the class harder than it needs to be (too much work for 2 units), but in the end he curves it generously. Because of his inferiority complex, he makes the 1st midterm (which he writes) worth a lot more than the final (which GSIs write). Genetics section had practical value but I found anatomy more interesting. Very doable class.
Prof Meighan is a confusing lecturer, but the fact is, as long as you know everything in the lab manual and take many practice tests, you will do well. The class has a generous curve, the concepts are not that difficult. As long as you figure out his style of questioning. Yes, he makes the class very difficult. But then again, I learned a lot.
He makes the two unit course much more difficult than it needs to be; the sheer amount of information required is irrational. He is very enthusiastic, but beware of asking for help, because his explanations will probably confuse you further.
The worst prof. at Berkeley. Makes interesting material boring. Transforms easy coursework into difficult memorization. Then add a pompous, arrogant attitude. He proves that anyone can be a professor.
Professor Meighan may have high expectations of you, but he is crystal clear on what he expects for the exams. Yes, the lab course requires an overwhelming amount of memorization and studying, but the concepts are not exceptionally difficult. He also gives out helpful study materials and is clear about his expectations.
Mike expects a lot from his students. Go to Lab Lecture, otherwise you will not succeed. The lab portion is a lot harder than the lecture (Bio 1A) you are going to have to start early and study.... His exams are decently similar to his past exams, and he gives you 2-3 copies of his old exams. If you know his style of questioning you should be fine
The first lab exam was very difficult, but the second lab exam was more straightforward if you studied hard for it. He gives you a lot of old exams to practice with, and if you do all of it, it helps you tremendously on the Meighan's lectures were not as bad as people said, and we're helpful. Not sure why people are saying that he talks too fast.
Meighan is a miserable self righteous man. He doesn't care about the students and is a staunch believer in the old, dry, Gradgrindesque "what I care about are facts" method of teaching. But he isn't even able to do that. Prepare to endure hours of random fact spewing, impatience, and unpleasantness.
Meighan is the worst lecturer I've had at Berkeley - he teaches as if you already know the material. Terrible at explaining processes clearly. Takes his class far too seriously. Read the manual, watch lectures online, get help from the GSIs. And don't worry too much; you just need to pass.
Terrible professor. The class is unnecessarily difficult, especially considering the first exam. He seems scatterbrained and talks at way-too-fast a pace. This 2-unit class has an amount of work likable to 6-7 units, and it's all thanks to Mike. Add on top of all this that he seems to recruit awful GSIs and specifically puts them in the night labs.
Cares too much about ploidy.
Goes entirely by his own rules, so make sure you pay attention to what Meighan says even if it might not be correct. Basically a professor that treats his own beliefs and techniques as the word of the bible.
Professor Meighan for me was very straightforward. Really hard midterms but aren't all midterms hard in Berkeley??? Besides he taught everything we needed to know. Maybe I heard too many bad things about him that somehow immunized me to his grading methods and tests.
People hate on him for some reason probably because they already have this preconceived notion of him due to his reputation. He's tough, but the class is straight forward if you work hard and take the practice tests. He's a pretty funny dude and seemed like he would've been a cool guy to get to know.
He's very clear on what you need to know and difficulty of all exams. He provides many past exams that you can kind of expect what to see on your test. The amount of effort he puts into the course is apparent. If you can recite the lab manual in your sleep, have a firm understanding of the lecture slides, and pay attention in lecture, you'll get A.
Best way to study for the first midterm is go over practice exams. Memorize structures and functions for EVERYTHING for the second midterm. Lecture isn't helpful, except for *maybe* some of the genetics questions. It's not a well-structured class, and the curve isn't that generous, but put in the time and effort, and you'll be fine.
Mike is the sole reason I disliked Bio 1AL. He's unclear, scatter-brained, disorganized. He spends a lot of time on really simple concepts, and moves past materials we've never been exposed to quickly, assuming you can follow him. He makes the tests and quizzes unnecessarily difficult - be prepared to learn EVERYTHING on your own.
very unorganized and unclear. assume you know everything. All the lectures are in a rushed style without really emphasized points.
Lectures are very scattered and disjointed. He talks very fast, speeding past important topics. He spends too long on minutiae. He lectures as if assuming you already know everything. He provides lots of practice exams for the first lab exam, which is very helpful. Really have to learn on your own.
Lectures were nearly always hard to follow and required repeated viewings to catch any minutiae he mumbled (which absolutely would show up on midterms). The class has an insanely large amount of work and will kick your ass if you fall behind. Practice exams were helpful but not enough to make the midterms any easier.
Prior to taking Bio 1AL, had heard many sharp criticisms of Mike - he was mean, etc. Maybe my experience is different b/c he isn't the lecturer for 1AL now, but honestly he's amazing in office hours/really nice guy, clearly cares about student learning. Just posting this for future students who are struggling w/material, highly recommend go to OH!
Was too easy tbh, need real challenge
Mike is now the course coordinator, not lecturer, but as far as I know he still writes exams. His exams are HORRIBLE. Each question requires 3-4 leaps in logic, so if you understand 3/4 concepts, you still miss the points for that question. Trick questions abound; the hardest part of the exam is figuring out what each question is asking.
While he does respond quickly to his emails, many liken him to Lucifer as he regards himself as God's other son. Exams were far harder than they needed to be and the class didn't test to see if you knew the important stuff. It was just to stratify grades, which can be done while testing us fairly. Protip: call him Dr. Meighan; he'll be nicer to ya
Meighan is a very rude man and TERRIBLE course coordinator. Not only does his grading for Bio 1A make no sense (89.9% does not round to an A-), but the lab is insanely difficult for a 2 unit class. The manual is poorly written, labs are disorganized, and the exams, which he writes, are purposefully tricky (52% averages?!) luckily the curve saves
Does not care about students. Extremely hostile when approached.
As an upper-division taking 1A/1AL, I can easily say these classes are fairly useless and trivial. Prepare to spend hours memorizing random facts from slides, struggling to answer test questions unless you recall every single detail. Mike is one of the most abrasive men I have ever spoken to/has an anger problem. The material is interesting.
Very rude. Does his job as coordinator but WILL NOT let you go about your life without constantly telling you he works so hard. Its as if he thinks him doing his JOB requires us to worship him and praise him for doing the tasks he is supposed to do. He does not care about students and simply works to find new ways to trick them on exams.
He is an alright lecturer. Doesnt care about students enough and complains about his job. Your job should be fun not something you feel as mandatory. Have to do the homework to pass the class and do every lecture. Never had office hours and is hard to reach him. One of the worst classes at Berkeley.
As others have said, he is the course coordinator which sees him in control of Canvas and other behind-the-scenes-duties. Unfortunately, he doesn't understand how to use it which makes for an incredibly unorganized class. The class grading is frequently wrong and he'll blame it on the system, rather than learn how to properly use it.
Poorly worded exam questions with frequently incorrect answers. Students needed to check every quiz and exam for correctness or risk losing points. Students were correcting him on his final exam up until the 12:00 am grade submission deadline. Hes condescending and doesnt own up to his mistakes. He doesnt like to appear wrong.
Meighan is as bad as they come. An absolute nightmare of a course coordinator. He hates students, is condescending in Piazza, and believes he never does anything wrong. Every quiz and midterm had errors. He posted final grades without letting students see grade bins. His class management should be an example of what not to do.
Just awful. Wasnt even a professor but a course coordinator for Bio1A. Most condescending, outright rude and immature instructor I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with. This sentiment is shared with many in my current class as well as on RMP. Sadly, Meighan appears to be a mainstay of Bio1A at Berkeley for the time being.
The least empathetic professor I have had. The Piazza posts constantly belittle students' concerns and makes us seem like we are the problem. Mike has unfortunately made this class much worse, even though the instructors and GSI's are doing their best
I'd email him 4 times for personal problems and he didn't reply once. The grading is awful, and he basically tries to make the class as difficult for you as possible. Because there are so many students, if you mess up once, you're not really granted a 2nd chance. You would think his time as a professor would make him more understanding, but no.
Horrible course structure online, no resources for studying, unclear on expectations of what would be on the tests. tests made impossibly hard, no one I know that didn't cheat did well on the tests.
Least empathetic professor I've ever experienced. Despite being in a pandemic, his expectations of his students are the same as they would be pre-pandemic. He considers providing alternate exam times as "accommodations" when they're really just bare minimum necessities to provide for students in different time zones. Really disappointing
I try to be pretty understanding of instructors, but there's really no getting around this guy. He's the kind of guy who thinks alternate exam times and reviews are going the extra mile, and not the minimum in a pandemic. He's just a difficult person work with and feels pretty unsympathetic compared to most instructors in these trying times.
Mike has a pretty bad rep among Bio 1A/1AL students at Cal, and I think some of it is warranted. However, the course is inherently challenging, he does provide students with many study materials, and often goes out of his way to help. I think he may come off as rude or condescending at times, but at the end of the day he gets the job done.
Honestly, he was just really rude when I would ask questions. His email once made me cry because of the amount of sarcasm in it, honestly just he's really condescending. The class itself is also asking a lot, 6hrs of lecture a week for a regular semester class with quizzes fairly often and chapters of text a week. Honestly made me hate Bio.
This guy is complete trash. He is so rude and condescending to students and always has to be right at the end of the day even if he clearly made a mistake on the exams. He rarely responds to piazza and emails and when he does, he makes a fool out of you which creates an environment where asking questions is discouraged. Please fire this guy.
Who is letting this guy stay? He is the most condescending and patronizing person. this course is difficult without a doubt. You must memorize every word spoken during 6 hours of lecture a week to have a shot at getting a good grade. Doesn't ever want to admit he is wrong.
As a DSP student, I interacted with Mike several times. In person, he is less blunt and seems to be a decent instructor. However, online and through Piazza, Mike is very condescending towards students. It isn't right that he brings up race, gender, and religion in emails as ways to justify course fairness and his actions. Cal should/can do better.
Mike is really not that bad. He accommodates well and when you actually have a chance to speak to him in person he's pretty cool. The reason why he has a low rating is a class full of pre-meds like to complain about their grade. I really liked mike and felt as though he helped me pass.
Extremely inconsiderate of students, not a good course coordinator. The material is already tough, but having quizzes be outside of class/discussion time makes it worse. When you take this class, you will have to devote your whole life to it. The alternative times are not good, and the schedule is inconsiderate to students.
Mike gets the job done with coordinating the courses and putting a few low-effort resources together and that's about it. He seems kinda chill and you do get a slight feeling that he cares about the success of students, but his responses to student questions online can be kind of passive aggressive and off-putting, which isn't really a great look.
Don't write him emails. I've never personally written him emails before, but friends who did received quite passive-aggressive responses.
One of the most unprofessional and disrespectful people I have met in my life. He is unhappy and makes sure to communicate that to his students. I really don't understand how he is still at such a prestigious university.
Very accommodating!! Much respect. I would hate seeing students explain all the tiny reasons and still be patient. It's hard coordinating a big intro course where many students are basically taking Bio for the first time in college. Bio 1A is hard, but it is not up to Mike. He is just coordinating between everything-he looks tired and just RESPECT.
This class is insanely dense for a 1A course, even if you are able to understand the content, the test questions are worded so weirdly and you are expected to know such small random details. The content itself is hard enough on its own, I don't see the need to try and trick your students. Mike is also not the most accommodating or understanding.
I was a new DSP student this semester and Mike was very accomodating. It is difficult to coordinate an intro class with hundreds of students. Unfortunately, he is the one who has to do grades and so he gets a bad rep as opposed to professors or the bio department which set the grade distributions and course policies in the first place.
Very passive aggressive responses over Ed Discussion, unhelpful to students. Extremely condescending, as a course coordinator he needs to do better. Ignored the concerns of students several times and bcourses was disorganized.
disrespectfully passive aggressive
He's literally so passive aggressive and mean for no reason and is not understanding at all in giving extensions -- he will go an extra mile to be mean
Bio 1A is a tough intro course, but the professor coordinates it well despite the large class size. While his communication style can come across as passive-aggressive at times, unstuck ai proved helpful for preparing and staying on top of the challenging material.
Mike was not the main instructor for this course however he was the course coordinator. He is extremely rude, passive aggressive, and unhelpful. Told all of us that would we be unsuccessful and fail the class
dont know who gave him the right to treat and talk to students as subhuman but idk
I don't know who hurt this man, but he is absolutely responsible for why everyone hates this class. The material itself isn't bad, but Mike's approach to how the class should be run is probably the worst I've seen out of all classes I've taken at cal. The biology department never misses with horrible course structure and taking fun out of biology.
everyone i've talked in bio 1a found this guy unfair and unprofessional. he treats the students as if they're fetal masses with no cognitive ability, constantly passive aggressive and puts a bad rep on biology at cal. the way he runs the course should be studied in textbooks about what not to do.
does not care about students rather puts fault onto students saying attendance is everything. every bio related major at berkeley takes this course and can tell you how this course literally will suck the soul out of you.
This was the most difficult class I've taken at Berkeley, not due to the content but due to how it was taught. Lectures were manageable, but exams were confusing and overly detailed. When students raised concerns, Professor Meighan often responded passive-aggressively, placing the blame back on us.
This man is truly incapable of showing any decency for the intellect of his students. So dismissive, so passive-aggressive, so pompous, yet so incapable of acknowledging his own mistakes or having any accountability for himself. An absolute disappointment of a human being, I pray that you don't ever find yourself needing to interact with him.
Mike genuinely made this class insufferable, I never felt comfortable with my grade and for the final grade I was 0.20% away from a completely different letter grade, but the class would not get curved. The idea of a curve or a shift in grade bins was shot down. He was also rude when you would go to ask him questions about the class content.
While Mike deserves credit for managing such a large course, his short temper and rigidity made communication/change tough. Suggestions were often dismissed on EdStem/email (though he replies quickly). Lecture quizzes had typos/issues constantly, and inconsistent attendance checks led to postponed recordings, which was frustrating.
The material itself is ok, but I do not do well with SOLELY in-person lectures bc profs talk fast and skip important info, so I sold my soul watching lecture videos and note taking when they were finally released a week before the midterms. Mike is VERY strict and passive aggressive, but you do get a few EC points from prof reviews. Final was fine.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Difficult exams that reflect nothing learned in class
Mike is difficult to communicate with as he does not accommodate and is passive-aggressive when students ask questions on EdDiscussion. He made this already challenging course harder to navigate.
