One of the MOST knowledgeable teachers in his field. Knows how to TEACH and how you learn. Demanding, but very very good. Some foot draggers in class kept us behind in the material, but what was covered was thorough. It is a semester and a half after I'm done and I still know my stuff....
What? OK, maybe I'm one of the "aforementioned" foot draggers, but this man is an awful professor. Knowing that most of us are not working in the field, he barely explains basics but instead blathers about some complex transactions. He's extremely condescending towards students to boot..definitely doesn't encourage participation with his attitude.
Footdraggers shouldn't complain about not understanding concepts. The text is straightforward and the homework problems have been clear in terms of trying to teach some hard concepts. Most of the class just doesn't do the work, ruining it for those that do. Big class - a little impersonal. Very approachable after class. Tough outside of that.
Knows the subject very well and provided good learning materials. Helped me, even with stuff related to a problem I had at work. Seems nice enough.
not the best professor I have ever had, and i have had a lot of them. rambles on for 3 hours with little break. wastes class time complaining, during EVERY session about how we dont do the work, without taking any alternative approach to make it more interesting. he is more a professional than a teacher.. it takes a special person to be a teacher
Not easy course, but i do think the professor is fair enough to all students. If you study the concepts, pay attention to his lecture, do the problems, you will own the materialas he said. And he is easy to reach by email.
He is a very knowledgeable professor and makes the material interesting. He is a professional and teaches the class the way a Graduate class was to be taught. I immensely enjoyed his class except the final exam. The final exam comprised of questions that seems as if they were written in a foreign language. His exam was ridiculously tough.
He has lots of knowledge in practices. Very very smart and helpful guy. If you have never worked in public accounting tax, you need to study hard and get used to his style. You do learn a lot from him in terms of both technical stuffs and how to be successful in this field.
His exams are hard - but if you do the work you will find the class very rewarding. He made partnership tax interesting and comprehensible- which when just reading the text book is no easy feat.
His tests are not as hard as they seem if you do the homeworks and understand the problems in the book. His class seems harder than it is because he tries to teach you as much as possible, but the actualy tests don't go into that much details. It would probably be more useful to have him to go over more problems in class than doing pp slides.
He is not a good teacher. He just talks doesn't explain. He covers so much additional material that it is difficult to know what are the main issues of partnership tax. He is very confusing and I would not recommend him to anyone. Do not take him.
This is probably the toughest professor I have had at Baruch. His class isn't hard, but the amount of work he asks for is a lot which makes it hard to keep up, thus making everything seem so much more difficult. He tries to cover as much as possible and won't take the time to explain topics even he admits are confusing.
Michael Meisler truly is one of the best graduate professors at Baruch College. It's no wonder his exam averages are so high! We need more professors like Mike (he prefers us call him that) in this school!
Prof M is hard, but you'll learn a lot in partnership tax. He expects a lot, like reading the text, IRS codes and regulations before coming to class, and doing HW on stuff we've yet to cover, so you'll have to keep up with him. His midterm and final are both difficult as well, but there is a curve. Prepare to work hard, and DEFINITELY participate.
Professor Meisler's class is tough. But if you follow along in class, participate, and do the homework, he'll help you out. I was looking at a B-/C+ at the midterm, but slowly but surely, I kept at it, reviewed the book and homework, and participated and got an A-. He also curves up since the scores are low, so that helps too.
Partnership law supposed to be hard, and why does he want to cover so many chapters in such short period of time? Impossible to keep up. He assumes everyone is on the tax field already and an accounting undergrad, both wrong assumptions. Textbook is ok, but he lectures so fast that his lectures are pointless. Nice guy, but please slow down.
You need to study by yourself. He just reads the slides in the classes. If you read all the tax codes, book, materials and home work he gives to you, you will be fine. He will give you a lot of materials.
impossible to keep up, class had me depressed, considered dropping program, he doesnt know to lecture, makes it hard to understand, I wish he would slow down. He expects students to be at his level. When someone asks a question, the way he answers confuses you more or he makes you feel you asking a dumb question. My semester was miserable.
He does a great job of explaining complex materials, if you read the book and pay attention you will do well. Some folks dont agree, I dont see it. I think its just people who dont study or care and then dont know why they didnt know the material (garbage in garbage out). I would say he is a good prof. would take again, wish he taught more classes.
He likes to move on quickly, asking questions can be intimidating. Lots of material and not enough time. SALT class has a lot of material but professor is approachable. I did ok in the midterm, but honestly I studied so hard everyday and still couldn't get higher grade. I'm having nightmares with this class and Im so afraid I wont be able to pass.
Since he wants to cover as much as possible, he does not allow many questions. Lectures too fast. Study on your own so maybe you can understand partnerships.
hard for ur mental health
Whoever thinks lectures are going too fast needs to do their part and put in more effort. This is a master program not a pre K playground. Professor Meisler is the coolest instructor in master program I met. Great song playlist, dedicated, patient and super friendly.
Professor Meisler is a well-versed instructor with a great deal of knowledge in his specialty. His professional demeanor is well-received and he has industry expertise that any student interested in Partnership studies will appreciate. He is open to discussion and makes every effort to be as transparent with his students as possible. Thank you.
The course is online for this semester. Not sure how it will be structured when is back to campus. Mike is a great professor. His lecture is clear and he welcomes questions. one mid term and one final. He curves. He wont easily fail students but you have to work hard to earn good grade. I will recommend.
To pass the class, you need to read the textbook. Don't rely on the powerpoints as a substitute for the textbook. Review the textbook examples and homework solutions to understand the concepts. Lectures were too short. If you ask a question, there's a 50/50 chance you will be more confused. Teacher like to complain about RMP.
Hard class, no other way to put it. You must work hard for your grade. MUST read book and do homeworks. Inspirational professor. Hes not the greatest Professor but hes fair and extremely knowledgeable. Biggest take away: Stay healthy, stay grounded and surround yourself with people you can trust in business and in life.
Nice person but bad choice if u care abt ur gpa. It's a test heavy class, graded by one midterm and one final. His grading criteria is quite unique since participation&hw grade won't harm you but only can boost u up if u do actually participate and do the hw. The midterm itself was 8 chapters and final is going to be 24 chapters cumulative.
Covers chapters at a fast pace and requires you to do your hw before lecture (where he just reads slides and complains about no cams or participation). The slides conveniently rarely have calculation problems yet the exams were mostly those. Only pro is easier grader. Overall incompetent with pedagogy, engagement and tech. I rate the class a D+.
Grade consisted of a midterm and final exam. Professor will just lecture off the slides, and the content consisted of mostly conceptual topics. However, the exams were almost all calculations, in which you are expected to learn them mostly on your own. Self studying and learning is a must in order to do well.
Enjoyed this professor's energy and knowledge. Has a sign-in sheet for attendance. Lots of calculations on the exams which we don't do any examples of in class. On top of this, I felt that the professor at times made other students feel stupid for asking questions, very arrogant. MUST READ TEXTBOOK IN ORDER TO PASS.
In order to pass this class, you need to read the textbook everyday and not skip a day. Each chapter is 100 pages and the PowerPoint slides are another 70 plus. You have no clue what's going to be on test so make sure you know everything. Dedicate your whole life for the semester for this class. The people who got A in class took in online FYI.
He knows what he's talking about but he doesn't understand that we're not on the same level as he his. Be prepared to hear a lot about EY and his kids. They are some interesting stories. Also, make sure you read your $142 book. Each Chapter has a min of 60 slides, textbook is 100+ pages. Great guy, very knowledgeable, amazing stories.
I love the stories that he tells but I don't appreciate how he only reads off the slides and lectures the concepts but tests us on calculation questions. Final may or may not be cumulative and he's a great guy and knows what he's talking about. I think it's just the Tax, not him.
One of the toughest and best classes I've taken. There is so so so much to learn in Taxation, but if you want to truly succeed and learn, Professor Meisler is a great place to start. For the Masters in Federal Taxation, the grading was curved and the tests were challenging. If you want to test yourself, Professor Meisler will provide that for you.
Nice professor, one of the nicest at Baruch, it does not excuse his teaching styles. He just reads off everything that is provided for him and tries to tie them to when he worked at EY. Which is fine but it does not help for his exams at all as it is almost all calc questions. Honestly to do well, just get on his good side and pray for the curve.
In class experience is very avg and bland. He reads off the slides, gives input in certain areas. He takes the (this is not legal advice) when asked a question, he'll give vague responses (I guess to save face if he's proven wrong). Exams are all calculation based, which is troublesome since he doesn't go over any practice problems in class at all.
I took him in Fall 22. Reads off slides, tries to cover 100s of topics within 3hrs but gives exams on 4~ topics. He won't narrow down the topics but will tell you to study EVERYTHING, useless AF! Honestly, I didn't learn anything! I wish there was another option for a professor. Got 68 & 65 on both exams, but participated A LOT & got an A+. Bad!!!
Good as a firm partner but bad as a professor. You won't learn much from him or his videos. Go on Youtube and follow the "Explore the Internal Revenue Code" guy. The Youtube guy is much more helpful in teaching you the topics along with the math, which this professor fails to do.
Michael is a stern professor who wants the best for his students. He may be strict and very unforgiving in his grading but I can guarantee that no other professor would come close to him in you learning the material. Take him if you want to know tax better and be willing to put in the work for his class.
I was hoping to be in the graduate program to learn and be educated on the course. Not deal with a man child. Pretty bad personality to deal with too.
Not a good at teaching, seems like he doesn't know the material or hasn't seen it in a while (odd since he claims he's been teaching for a while). Advice: read textbook (short), watch Explore the IRC on YouTube, sit in the first row, make sure he knows your name. Don't expect to gain anything from the class. You self-teach.
The semester is officially over. I did not like his teaching methods at all. They were not making the class easier and the professor was too condescending to teach. He would talk about his family that it would cut into class time. A lot of us come for a education for our degree. Not come to listen about the wedding you're gonna attend.
This class is not going to be enjoyable I guarantee it. He does not make this class fun at all. He has a very big ego and does not stop talking about his family and vacations unnecessarily. Did I come to learn Tax or did I come to learn Professor Meisler's life story because I honestly find it hard to believe anyone can learn from this class.
Very, very bad at lecturing. Learned more about him than tax. Entire class was me self-studying from the textbook and him reading off 100+ slide powerpoint that he could not condense or make more digestable. Did not learn a single thing from him. I just had a study group to help me push through the material.
He's not very competent in teaching. You basically need to self learn everything to even pass. To anyone trying to pass, just go online and watch a youtube video or something. He's not gonna teach you, just blabber on and on about his family and plans that he likes instead of focusing on what we came here for. He is also very rude to students.
He talks more about himself than the subject matter. If you want to pass, it's better to find study materials online and practice repeatedly; the exam content should align. He's also impolite when students ask basic questions.
The professor, a retired Big Four partner, is smart but not a great teacher. Class time is split: 20% on tax, 20% on cheating warnings, and 60% on his life and success. You won't leave feeling more informed.
He is a very frustrating professor to deal with. He can't teach, he can't at least put up a front and be nice, and he is rather egotistical. It doesn't feel like he comes to educate us, rather he comes to spout nonsense that makes himself feel good in exchange of any potential knowledge we can gain for our potential career.
If you enjoy engaging lectures, this professor might not meet your expectations. It's surprising he's still employed given his mediocre performance. Since he says he's in charge of the whole program and there are no alternative instructors, your best strategy is to focus on the textbook and slides, tuning out his voice to maintain your sanity.
I honestly have no idea why he's a professor if he isn't going to teach anything besides the "Michael Meisler: School of My Life Story". The guy cannot and will not go into explicit detail about the content from the lectures unless he's reading off the slides. He has more investment on his own personal life than anything he teaches.
This man should not be teaching at Baruch, he is seen laughing and smiling at the thought of failing students from his online tax class. For an online class he makes you come in for the final examination, which is worth 65% of the final grade, to no surprise the class average for the final was a 45 (worst professor I have ever had).
Many students dislike him due to his personality or interaction style, and he's quite self-centered. However, among all Baruch graduate professors, he's the fairest. His grading is transparent, unlike others, and he strictly adheres to the syllabus. Attendance isn't mandatory; just communicate with him occasionally.
Honestly its easy to dislike him due to his personality, he loves to hear himself and his successful life. But compared to other professors in the Tax Dept, he might be the best. He gives HW, many practice problems on Cengage, and states how he will curve final grades. Such a relief as there were no surprises.
The positive ratings here don't account for the fact that even if he's a better alternative to other professors in the graduate program, doesn't mean he's a good professor. And he shouldn't be given a good rating for not being the worst option. He's not a good professor by any means. He talks too much about his personal life in class and he's rude.
This prof comes up with tough questions and is more about scolding than teaching. He stresses out if things don't go his way. Tip: You might want to skip his talks and not bother with his advice since he won't help with problem solutions. Stick to studying on your own, keep detailed notes, and lean on online resources to make it through his class.
Does not teach at all and constantly talks about himself, accomplishments and vacations with his family. Reads off the slides of simple concepts and definitions and then tests you on calculations and math problems, you've never seen before. He may be the worst professor in the entire accounting program. I had never experienced anything like this.
Retired EY partner w/ extensive experience, he seems unhappy teaching, and treats students harshly, but surprisingly leads the tax program. He demands extensive preparation, giving little in return, lacks patience for questions, focusing more on personal anecdotes than teaching. Problem sets not shared, leaving us questioning our understanding.
I honestly think Prof Meisler is just here to mock the next generation of accountants. Constantly accusing students of not doing the readings, being impatience when a question is asked and really just a mean person. I will say, I now learned that this could be how all partners are like, (at least in EY).
You could be completely prepared for the tests and read the chapters many times and still fail his exams. Purposely gives difficult exams to trick students and for his personal amusement. I can't believe he's allowed to do this. Laughs and says that he will not give another exam like exam 2, then makes the third exam the same way and everyone fails
You can ace the readings and still fail his trick exams. This retired EY partner seems miserable and loves talking about himself more than teaching. Skip his useless advice, study on your own, and rely on online resources to survive his class.
Lectures and homework were ok and easy to understand. Exams were a different beast where raw score averages were probably below the 50s. Honestly considered getting a career change after taking this class since it made me feel so incompetent and dumb getting half of exams wrong. Got above avg but this class really kills your self confidence.
The most challenging course in the program but the professor teaches it well. He took time to go over the lessons and the homework. In fact, we only covered 50% of the syllabus due to time limits. 3 difficult exams but if you did the homework, you should get a decent score after the curve. 1 easy group project. The best professor in the MST program
Just Run if you could take another prof do it. WORST PROF
He is the type of professor that will intentionally tries to trick you on exams for his personal amusement. You can tell he has no empathy, no intention of teaching and simply doesn't care about students' success both with school and being career ready. He talks and laughs about how students failing exams and then insults. Take someone else.
Worst Professor ever. Gives no test examples in lectures or textbooks because his questions are AI generated with tons of mistakes. Lectures are asynchronous and are boring to watch. Avoid him at ALL COSTS.
The professor has 3 exams and 80% of your grade is based on those 3 exams. I've taken more than 100 pages of notes just for this class and I'd be grateful for a 70. You have to read the textbook, watch the lectures, and study on your own time just to have a glimpse of what's going on. If you can avoid him please do
His exams are extremely difficult, and there's not enough time to complete them. The questions are so lengthy that it takes about two minutes to read each. He hates his job and hates the students. He wants you to fail.
An amazing professor and human being. Truly a gift to be in his class and for someone with his achievements to give back his time and expertise after an incredible career. Disregard the poor reviews below as they are clearly from students that are not serious about tax, their time or careers.
Class is no where near as bad as the other reviews claim. Final grade is based on class rank so you don't need 90+ overall grade to get an A.If you do the work and practice problems provided you will do well. Definitely a heavier class and will take a fair amount of time but don't be scared off by students who blame teachers when they don't do work
Very tough class, just as all things tax, and a bad decision to make it asynchronous. Tests are pretty tough, especially closer to the end of the semester, as the topics get more difficult. The grading is fair. The final grade was curved generously, as an average student doesn't study much. I liked him and the platform he used.
DO NOT TAKE IF POSSIBLE. He just reads off power point slides and goes over zero problems and how to solve them. The tests are all problems that comes out of nowhere, not from his lectures or the homeworks. Graded only by two midterms and one final. Only good thing is that he does curve and follow the grade distribution guidelines.
This class is held in the evening and caters largely to working professionals. It feels like the professor may be a bit out of touch with the realities we're facing. Scheduling an exam on April 8th—just a week before the April 15th tax deadline, when many of us are overwhelmed with work—seems incredibly out of step with our circumstances.
I've had him previously for undegrad and another master course. I can confidently say he hasn't gotten any better. I've done well in all classes only because I studied like crazy, not at all because of his teachings. I never listened to his lectures as it's just saying what he posts on slides. Reading the tb is better than his slides.
He should give practice questions before each exam to help students apply textbook concept to various types of problems. The homework is far from sufficient to fully absorb the concepts. Each professional exams like the CFA, CPA, EA etc. prep course always includes 1000+ practice materials to help students thoroughly understand the concepts.
Meisler's class is extremely challenging. The exams are unlike anything you've seen—deep, fast-paced, and hard to finish. But he's fair, the curve helps, and you'll walk away truly understanding partnership tax. Do the readings, study hard, and don't give up. It's tough, but you'll come out sharper and better prepared for the real world.
get ready to read, bc you signed up for a law class, not a tax class, high expectations, intentional doesn't follow baruch grading structure. he won the deloitte national championship - which gave him a super boosted ego - most of the students come to class, listen to the lectures, do the homework, and still wont digest the material
he assigns blame to the students for not understanding the material instead of re-evaluating his teaching methods. uses up every single minute, should make the concepts real world related, lots of material and theory makes it difficult to comprehend , even though the book is helpful
One of the worst professors at Baruch. Read the textbook yourself and do practice problems. The professor just reads off the PowerPoint and is not helpful at all.
Avoid like the plague. The worst professor I've had at Baruch. He does not teach, does not care and puts all blames on the students. Be warned that the exams are nothing like the homeworks or any problems he shows in class. Exams are full of calculations we never learned before and he will not give any practice exams.
Never Forget Akindi Incident of '25
His attitude often came across as if he enjoyed seeing students in difficult situations, which created a very unpleasant, unproductive, and disrespectful learning environment.
only option available in partnership tax. I believe you'll make it through. Sometimes life is like that, you won't always meet wonderful people.
Avoid if possible! Very unpleasant and rude. No passion in teaching, and the way he confuses students feels completely unnecessary and makes the whole class miserable.
Sure, tax is hard. But this professor makes life miserable for the students just because he can. He's always quick to blame the students even when it's his fault. His test questions are mistaken ridden and made with AI, he also grades them with another AI service and it was graded all wrong. He makes an already hard subject even worse. AVOID.
Regardless of which professor you choose, the experience will be the same. Tax is hard; it was never an easy subject. It's either you enjoy tax or you don't. Don't take it very personally if you find it challenging. There are millions of rules and exceptions. Just try your best; do the Cengage practice and remember it's not the end of the world.
He is not the worst Tax Prof. Tax is a hard subject! Create a study guide early on, after each chapter, PRACTICE THE TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS, and Cengage questions over and over again. Ur study guide shouldn't be solely based on hw questions. READ the textbook, make that study guide, and you should be fine. Tax is very difficult, don't let it scare you
Don't listen to the bad reviews. He is a great professor if you show up to class and actually do the readings as well. I read the textbook, went to every lecture and engaged in the lecture. It was a fair class. If you do the work you will be fine. He is willing to help if you try and is accessible outside of class a well
Total cakewalk of a class. Professor Meisler is not only easy but curves everyone's grade like +50 points at the end of the semester. Three exams, one group project and homework that's not graded but serves as great preparation for the exams. He's the dept. chairperson of the entire accounting program.
Ignore the bad reviews... yes, he gives a ton of work, but it's is only because he cares. You'll walk out of this class learning more than your other classes. His lectures are quite refreshing - he has a public speaking tone. A lot of homework and studying. 1 MT 1 FINAL all MC in person. Do the homeworks and the mini project he gives, youll be fine
Overall the class was not unpleasant. His final was a big turnaround from the midterm, which is why he is a 3. If the midterm was written like the final, I would give him a 5. If you do not work full time, take his class. Working full time while taking it is very challenging. I wish he understood that many students have bills to pay. Stressful. Ok.
he comes off as a bit harsh at times but you can tell he wants his students to learn. his lectures weren't that great and need improvement. attendance isn't mandatory. class is graded on 1 midterm, 1 final, and cengage hw. a lot of self-study is recommended for this class.
He's an okay professor. A lot of self teaching you have to do in this course. My only complaint would be that at least for me it was hard studying for his exams. Homeworks and practice problems help but not to get a a great score. I don't work so I put in a lot and i mean a lot of hours studying the homework problems and didn't see results on tests
