The way he teaches is really straightforward, and the way he grades is very much in your favor if you just attend class most of the time. There are reading assignments but in reality, you don't need to read them. Just skim over topics to do well on read

Smart guy, but sometimes hard to follow. And don't sit on the front row...he spits a lot!
His lectures are interesting, he is a nice man, his tests are hard, and he was probably a hippie back in the day.

Pushes his extreme, liberal, anti-America political views onto the class. Memorizing the book is a must. Cannot contact him, must contact TA's (one of which, was on a high and mighty power trip).
Tends to venture off the subject quite a bit and likes to push the Russian area of studies. His tests are pretty hard and the reading quizzes are ridiculous. I really would't reccommend him.
If you had decent history classes in highschool, this class will be a breeze. I don't really recall having to go to class much to still make an A. Occasionally throws in interesting points or tangents, but his teaching style is not very engaging.
EXTREMELY BORING!! and tests are awful!! have fun sleeping in class if you have to take him
Melancon was a great teacher. If I changed my major to history it would be because of him. He is so passionate about what he teaches that you can see it. He's also pretty easy. If you go to class he gives you outlines of the notes.

People who think his class is hard are just stupid. I haven't looked at the book once and I've made B's on the tests and the same on the reading tests. He is very boring but he's so freakin easy.
He is not difficut, just boring, tests come straight from lectures, if you buy university notes, tests are easy, for the reading quizes, just find someone in another class....they are pretty common sense, but weigh heavily on your grade
He was easy overall. All you have to do is read the headings, bold words, and summaries in the assigned reading and go to class. If you miss 3 or less days, you get 5 extra points on your final grade. Boring, yes, but an A or B makes the final optional

His grading system is bull. Doesn't respond to emails. Lectures very unorganized; jumps back and forth. Do not take him.
Melancon is an easy prof. A little air headed, but if you listen to what he says, you'll do fine in the class and maybe even learn something.
Tests are kindof hard, but the quizzes every week are really the only thing that matters. Gives bonus for attendance.
VERY CONFUSING! He jumps from topic to topic with in like 50 years! Makes it hard to take notes. He brings his politcal views to class.(UGH!) You can sleep through class, get the university notes and get a A/B
Gives 5 bonus points on your average for no more than 3 absences. If you either pay attention and take notes, have a friend who takes good notes, or get the university notes, you should do fine. I slept through most of the class but got an A.
Easy, knows his stuff and puts a nice spin on Cold War (his specialty is Russian History) Tests come strickly from lectures, U-notes or your own, attendence bonus. Should be an easy A, hope you can stay awake though, like any lecture, it can get lengthy.
He sucks. He makes sarcastic remarks and his lectures are very long and boring. He also jumps around in lectures and it is hard to know what to study for in your notes because of that. He says alot of stuff that isn't on the tests. DO NOT TAKE!
He is a very nice teacher but he doesn't slow down or give us time to finish taking the notes. He also talks fast when he is lecturing. Easy but confusing.

Boring lectures, not consistent on his grading. Something might be a D for one person, and the same thing a B for another person. Final is huge chunk of the final grade. Avoid if possible.
Class is not easy no matter what others say. You have to read and take good notes. UNotes help but tests are challenging. NOT Recommended.
Melancon was the estiest history teacher I have ever taken. All you have to do is go to class and pay attention, that is all!
A great teacher who really knows his stuff, not the easiest but if you take good notes and read you will do fine. He gives bonus for attendance which is a big plus. You have to really pay attention b/c he jumps around a lot.
He is a nice man most of the time, but he goes off on soapboxes about his political opinions, and that gets really old. He jumps around time periods a lot, and his tests are pretty hard. His quizzes are easy though--just don't miss more than 5 days and you get 5 points added to your average
Not an easy teacher, class is boring and test you will be better off.
He's very opinionated& gets up on his soapbox when he should be teaching. He spends 2 much time voicing his opinion& 2 little time going over what will be on the test. He rambles& jumps from topic to topic without getting to a point. I didn't learned much from him& would not recommend taking him
This class is VERY hard. The tests are hard and you need to study ALOT! He gives 5 % points to final grade is you show up to all but 2 classes, that helps a lot. He is a HARD teacher and likes to express his political views.
DROP THE CLASS!! No matter how much I studied his notes or the u notes I could not make very good on the test. His lectures are not organized, and he is hard to follow!
this teacher sucks!!! i usually make A/Bs in history, and im struggling to make a D!!! this is freakin ridiculous. dont bother showing up for class because it wont really help you on the test. just stay away!!!

Interesting class I thougt it was easy
I went to every class and studied hard for the tests and still didnt do all that well. Get UNOTES. Can be a boring class. Likes to hear himself talk. The only good thing about the class is that he adds 5 points to your final grade if you dont miss class more than 3 times. I'd get out!
Horrible class! His tests are impossible! He buys the UNOTES to make sure the people who study them fail the tests. He doesnt take university excuses at all. Even if you go to class you will do bad on the tests. GET OUT NOW!
He honestly is very hard! If you are a history whiz then you might do decent....but I am an A student and it was seriously hard to get a LOW "B" in his class. I take VERY detailed notes and study for awhile and the tests are still insanely hard! He is also very opinionated! Find another teacher!
I thought he was very easy, you get five bonus points added on to your final grade if you dont miss more than three classes. You have to study but overall his tests are easy.
His lectures are all over the place and he does not explain things well at all. The tests ask detailed questions and somehow you are supposed to know the answers. He does add 5 points on your average for attendence but in the end you will need those 5 points to pass.
He is disorganized in thinking and talks alot! Extremely hard test! I am not used to making this low on his test! He gives you a 5 point bonus for attendence on your final grade! If you have a B+ then no final! Lets GTA's handle the test! Overall: take him if you dare....

pretty interesting teacher, he's grading policy is very beneficial. If you come to class you get five average points at the end of the semester. he's a tad bit communists but that's okay when you get an A in his class.
He is a great historian and really knows his stuff.The tests are hard but if you read all of the assigned readings, he pulls a lot of the test questions from there.He really isnt as bad as people make him out to be, I hate history but really enjoyed some of his lectures.
He was hard. I studied a lot for tests and still couldn't make an A. Lecture was boring, but he really knows his material. If you have a B you don't have to take the final which is great but hard to make a B.
He was the worst teacher I've EVER had in my entire life. I don't know where his tests came from. I swear the man just made up stuff right before the test. Tests come from smallest points and you have to read the book. You also have a reading quiz every Thursday. DON'T TAKE HIM!! HE's THE WORST!!!
Do not take his class!! It's almost impossible to get an A, even if you take detailed notes and study them. Most of the questions on the test had nothing to do with the lectures.
Quite hard, but scaled the grades by like 20 points at the end.

He is AWFUL. He is very arrogant and boring. He is not willing to assist you when you are struggling. I do not recommend this class.
The only way to do well on the tests is to study the U-Notes, because he sometimes goes on a tangent. He's a very interesting teacher, and so I enjoyed his classes ... I just didn't enjoy his tests (that were after detailed information). He's somewhat controversial though, so be prepared to suck it up when you enter the room.
Does not test you on material in notes, makes up test so that even if you do study you wont pass, I love history and hated his class!! Bad teacher!! I rightfully made a B but he gave me a c and would not change it even when i showed him my average from all of my test and quizes
He is very interesting to listen too, and his quizzes are very easy. The test are pretty hard but he gives a lecture outline, and the test pretty much comes from the outline. His class does require some studying but he is a pretty good teacher.
i am thinking of taking his class in the spring but the comments are all across the board, i was just wondering if he makes you write papers, what his tests are like (multiple-choice, etc.), why his quizzes are so easy, and anything else that would help --- THANKS!!! WAR EAGLE!
He is a really good teacher and he is very interesting! The quizes are easy and the tests are easy if you go to class and take notes. He's also very nice!
This man is the most ignorant person I believe I've met in my college career. His tests are IMPOSSIBLE to study for, quizzes are crazy, and class is horrible. Drop this guy if you have him I promise you will thank me for it later!

This guy is the man!!! Gives you the scoop. Got an A in the class and didn't really have to do all that much. No tests, 5 papers (2, 8-10pgs; 3, 4pgs) Talks forever, but knows what he's talking about. For best results ask questions so that he knows your interested or at least pretending to be so. As a higher level class I recommoend it, easy A!
Great teacher, seems to know material well and makes class pretty interesting most of the time. Just watch out, he has a somewhat monotone voice and I fell asleep in class a few times. Tests and quizzes are scantron. The quizzes are 5 True/False questions, so its 50/50 even if you dont know anything about it. Tests are straight from the lectures
his lectures arent bad but i dont know where he finds the test material.. if u take this class.. buy University notes.. they are life savers.. but be careful he will screw you over in the last 2 weeks on ur grade...
the man is a goof. he gives you an outline and then goes over maybe one tenth of it in class. don't take notes just buy univ. notes. trust me he will leave you with a headache if you try to follow his notes.
This guy is impossible! He flies through notes and is totally boring! I got a C, D, then A on the last test (I finally tried U-Notes!!)... He doesn't scale even if you're a tenth of a point away... :(
This man will put you to sleep! Before each class i'd have to down a couple red bulls but even that didnt help to much. And buy the U Notes!

Boring lectures that he requires you sit through. He also has really hard test. I love history but hate his approach to it. Average tests scores were around 67, oh and he doesn't curve scores. My advice is to take yr history over the summer somewhere else; you will get credit hours and it won't factor in yr GPA. This class will only hurt yr GPA. I
Long lectures, semi-boring. Tests are way harder than he makes them out to be in class. Very tricky teacher on exams. Easy quizzes. Nice attendance and bonus policies (+5 points if less than 3 missed classes) Lets A and B students exempt final exam.
Tests are hard. Questions are in depth hist. questions so if you already don't like hist. don't take this class! he does give great attendance bonus. reading quiz are not hard!
Great teacher, very passionate, extremely good-looking. First I'll start by saying that I am not a history person at all and hate studying and I made an A in the class. If you go to class and take notes you'll be fine. Especially with the 5 points. You don't need to read at all either! I would DEFINITELY take him again. Did I mention he was hot?
I hated this class. His lectures are terribly boring. I'm a science major and there is way too much effort needed to get an A in the class for a core course...The quiz grades averaging a test really helps though. And if you miss three classes or less you'll get five points on your final grade. Oh and don't say his name wrong...

The only good part about this class is that you get a 5-point bonus if you miss fewer than 3 days. But, it probably won't help because your average won't be good enough for the 5 points to matter. The tests are VERY random and I studied all the time and made 5's on all my reading quizzes and still made an F. VERY BORING CLASS!!!
His test are very hard and his questions on them confuse you! Read the book backwards and forwards and if you dont miss more than 3 days you get 5 points on your average. But other than that i wished i would have never taken the class.
So boring. Very hard. You get an attendance bonus, but it wasn't even worth it. If you can get the old tests, they help. Quizzes every week that require lots & lots of reading. Very time consuming. Don't take!!
This man deserves more credit. He is very dry and boring but i didnt open my book one time and managed a B in the class. He really knows what hes talking about and i learned a lot. Down some red bulls before class and get University notes and you should be fine.

This was one of the easiest classes I took. All you have to do is take notes in class and read the book a few times. If you have an A in the class going into the final, he won't even LET you take the final. Great teacher!
Very Easy if you go to class. He gives you 5 points on your final grade just for not missing 3 classes. And if you have a B or higher going into the final you can exempt it. Also you take a reading quiz every thursday and your average is combined to make a test score. Boosted my grade!
This teacher is really into what he teaches. He's puts up power pt slides that you can access. I did better in the class once I started using U Notes. You have reading quizzes once a week but he drops the three lowest ones. Attendance is not mandatory but I jumped from a C to a B because he added 5 extra points for perfect attendance. Stay Awake!

This guy is a TERRIBLE teacher. You sit in his class and listen to him ramble on and cover WAY too much material. People say the UNOTES help but they are just as skitzo and sparatic as his lectures. Nobody in my class is doing well. Aweful teacher, aweful class.

Great professor. Extremely intelligent. Addresses controversial issues. If you are lazy or intellectually retarded, do not take his class, will fail it.

Haters can suck it. Mikey is awesome! He is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've ever had. Immersed himself in Russian culture, and knows everything over a period of centuries. If you can't read & go to class, skip Mike. He's not a very hard grader IF you can regurgitate at least half of what he's given you.
Russian history - an easy class with interesting material. Some days the lecture was too boring to sit all the way through but most were fine. Tests are easy (he gives you the questions beforehand) and i didn't have to read the books to get an A on the book reports. It's intimidating at first, but it's really an easy, interesting class.
Literally one of the best professors I have ever had. Go to class everyday and you will be fine. The man is extremely passionate about Russian History, and while a bit long winded is rarely boring. Especially funny in the higher course levels as he is more likely to get worked up and ranty. Seriously, the dude is awesome
