He gives you every resource possible so you can undertand and succeed in this class. Live streaming lectures, podcasts and videocasts, tons of extra credit, dropping lowest scores. He's an amazing professor and I feel so lucky to have taken ABI102 with him! Come to class and you'll do great!
Essential (and required) class to lay the groundwork for Pre-Vet and Nutrition majors. Very valuable information, he brings it home with life examples from his own work and research. Super friendly and approachable he doesn't try to intimidate students with his know-how or his titles, instead is very genuine about teaching. Also, extra credit!!!
Nicest and most genuine guy in the world. Genuinely cares about each and every single student in the class. He had to start the course from scratch and did a great job keeping the class fair and the least amount of stress possible. Very approachable. Would take again.
Professor M'ski is amazing. He is really helpful and makes this class a lot easier than the last guy. He gives as much extra credit as possible and it really helped my grades.
Very organized and very respectful towards students. I wish I had him for my other biochemistry classes.
Dr. Msk' was amazing. He couldn't emphasize enough what was going to be on the exam. There's a HW problem set due every week and they do go over the answers two days later. There's plenty of extra credit so I recommend you do it all. He's a great professor and doesn't want this class to be as hard as the last professor.
Second class with this professor and he is still my all-time favorite! So upbeat and energetic and he really works to make sure the students understand the concepts. I would recommend any class with this professor, as his grading is more than fair and he offers extra credit. He also breaks down difficult concepts to make them easier.
He is very helpful and has a really nice tone. However his lecture and powerpoint slides are so confusing because it contains a lot of materials and jumps from topic to topic. Also he does not describe concepts that are needed to understand the other concepts. It is really hard to understand what he is trying to say.
So ABI 102 is not the easiest class, but taking it with Mienaltowski will make it as easy as it can get. He makes sure to explain the lecture material clearly. He goes over and lets you know what is important to know, so you don't waste your time studying unnecessary material. Tests are not made to trick or confuse you, very fair. Virtual lectures!
Dr. M is a very caring professor who puts a ton of effort into this class. Although lectures are material dense, you will be fine if you read the book and keep yourself organized. Utilize Dr. M's office hours or his TAs office hours to go over problem sets before they are due.
Super nice guy, but mediocre teacher. Gives a ton of extra credit so you can get a B without even trying that hard... I'm guessing you'd get an A if you tried at all.
If you have to take biochem, this is the way to go. He offers extra credit clicker questions. And he actually cares about students and their stress levels. The class has a lot of material, but he is definitely the best case scenario to pair with the amount of material. He's very receptive to student feedback too.
Gives clicker questions as extra credit, which are very helpful. very clear notes, super caring, fair tests as long as you study the material. Super caring about his students. Overall great professor!!
Professor Mski is honestly amazing. Such a passionate and fun teacher. You will not regret taking him. Extra credit and homework aplenty, great for padding your grade. Lectures can be a little confusing to follow, mostly due to the dense content, but he posts the video lectures online. Hard tests but lots of resources to help you succeed.
Dr. M is a great professor and you will not regret having him. He gives you lots of resources to succeed in such a hard course and really does care about his students. This course will be hard no matter what but he tries to make it fun. He does clickers for extra credit and drops the lowest midterm grade of 3 so there is a lot of padding grade wise
This class has a lot of difficult content, but Prof. M'Ski tries his hardest to get you through the class alive! He genuinely cares and understands that the class is difficult. He does a lot of clicker q's and gives hw which are both a good resource for exam studying and puts a nice buffer on the grade! Stay on top of studying b/c it can overwhelm!
One of the best professors at UCD. He takes a class with extremely difficult content and makes it understandable. You have to put in a lot of time studying to succeed, but he makes it a lot easier, with fair tests and clicker questions for extra credit! If you have to choose a biochem prof, CHOOSE THIS ONE.
material is very hard but prof does a great job. Extra credit clicker questions if you go to class. Homework is very little and doable. Take the first few exams seriously because the material gets way harder so do well while you can! I think he sometimes spends too much time on not important things but overall good professor and lecture based exams
Dr. M ski is probably one of the best professor I had at Davis. His exams are fair as long as you go through the slides a couple of times and go over the practice exams he gives you. You also get a lot of extra credit, I believe up to 20 points in extra credit. Make sure to do well in the first two exams as the last exam is the hardest.
Prof M'ski couldn't have provided the lecture material any better to set us for success(very likeable and enthusiastic) Exams were VERY straightforward and doesn't try to trick you. You either know it or you don't. However, if you want an A you're going to have to WORK for it. Extra credit was provided(5%) through clickers which were GOLD for exams
Dr. M'ski was awesome. He was very generous with extra credit from clicker points. There was a lot that he didn't make us memorize which was SO nice considering how many little details we had to know for other things. He had a lot of buffer assignments to bump up your grade too. The class could've been a lot harder w/ a different professor.
You can easily get an A in this class if you apply yourself, study smart, and take advantage of everything M'ski gives you. Lectures are recorded so you can skip 8 am lecture but his clickers are extra credit and end up helping a lot. Provides practice tests and is clear about what's expected. Its a hard class but you're set up for success.
He is a pretty good prof. He gives so much extra credit. If you do the clicker questions and study before the tests (and do all the material he gives you to study) it is an easy A. The tests are pretty fair and a lot of the time go off the practice test.
Professor Mienaltowski made my first quarter at UC Davis memorable! He made biochemistry understandable and fun with his constant examples in the veterinary field. I definitely feel prepared for veterinary school and got a whole new insight on life and the biochemical processes going on within us. Be sure to attend office hours!
Dr. M'ski is honestly THE BEST professor I've had so far at Davis. He truly wants his students to succeed, and makes an upper division biochemistry class super interesting and easy to learn. His tests and assessments are very doable if you watch the lectures and use his practice materials!
I was excited to take Mienaltowski, but dont let the previous reviews fool you. He is a horrible lecturer, and his timing for exams and quizzes is rididculous. Dont get me wrong he seems like a very caring guy, but maybe becoming a professor isnt for him. He knows his stuff. However, he doesnt know how to teach and it is very clear in his lectures
Yeah, ok Kendrick. Mienaltowski's a FANTASTIC professor. He tests what he lectures on, so I don't see how that's "horrible". His timing for tests is fair. This isn't for him? He offers 2% extra credit just for doing Kahoots. Something ppl don't know: he sends emails to students struggling and offers his help. Stop complaining and go study more.
Dr. M'ski was honestly okay from a teaching standpoint, but it seemed as if he spent more time finding ways that the students could have cheated in his class and he constantly looked for plagiarism. Apparently he reported a tremendous amount of students to OSSJA for plagiarizing. However, he does offer extra credit for Kahoot, which is nice.
I really enjoyed his class, the lectures were clear and he taught really well. There is a lot of material and requires lots of studying but is completely doable. He transitioned well to online teaching and offered extra credit. He takes plagiarism very seriously and could have handled a plagiarism situation better. He is very approachable.
For being my first professor at U.C Davis as a transfer, I found the structure of the course especially during Covid straightforward. Overall quizzes and tests are semi-difficult but he does a lot to prepare you for them and even does extra credit this way through Kahoots. Always responds on canvas and taught over 300 students fairly. He is a gem.
He's not a good professor and he wants the students to fail
If you are looking to be successful in life and graduate college at a reasonable time, don't take this class. He has open note/book FRA's but if you use his notes you will be accused of plagiarism and sent to the SJA. He preaches against plagiarism but his slides are directly copied and pasted from wikipedia or the textbook with no citations.
Dr. Mienaltowski is an amazing professor to have for biochemistry. Yes MANY students got reported to OSSJA over supposed plagiarism, but I don't think it's fully his fault becuase this class was online during Covid so of course he needed to be strict about that. The course is A LOT of material, but I'm a pre-vet student who felt engaged in class.
M'ski is an amazing professor. Teaches well in person and online and is super accesible. Those complaining about the SJA reports have a right to, because it was handled a bit poorly, but he's the best professor I've had in any STEM class here so far. You have to work for your grade, but it's not impossible by any means.
M'ski is one of the best profs I've had! He gave prerecorded lectures and live review sessions(online). We had a LOT of assessments(1-2/ week), but they ensure you have a handle on the material. The preceding reviews seem to focus on the ONE situation that was not handled well, but he is still a great instructor that wants you to understand biochem
If you're looking for an honest review, disregard the 1's below this. Dr. M'ski is an amazing professor, one of the best I've had in my 3 years at Davis. Responds to concerns, reasonable about workload during the pandemic, and tries his best to make sure students understand the material. Multiple review sessions/OHs & I would 100% recommend
M'ski was an alright professor. He transitioned to online learning very well and all lectures are pre-recorded from previous years. The material is hard, so it is very dependent on how much work you put in. He emphasized avoiding plagiarism so much that I was scared to submit any assignments, but just write your own notes and you'll be fine
He seems like a nice guy, but his teaching started to decline towards the end of the quarter. I can tell he wants what's best for the students but there was a plagiarism incident and I think he handled it pretty poorly and it was unprofessional. It was a bit disappointing, I really looked forward to this class.
ABI 102 is one of the harder classes I took at Davis, but Dr. M'ski is one of the nicest professors I have had. He is strict but fair. His lecture goes quite fast but if you re-watch them and do all the work you will be fine. His extra practice and Kahoot challenges give you a decent idea of what to expect on tests.
He throws a lot of tantrums through email lol I don't know why he got so upset all the time
M'SKI definitely cares for his students by having office hours, gives kahoots, and accessible outside of class. I did not get reported to sja for plagiarism but, he did handle the situation poorly and was not clear about citing his lecture notes for a specific assignment. 5 quizzes/5 free response/ 2 midterms. does not give enough time for exams!!
ABI102 is very challenging. For the free response assessments, he was very strict about no plagarism and also wasn't clear about it in the beginning. He does not let you copy from his lecture slides and if you use them, he takes them seriously and will refer you to OSSJA. He sent so much students to OSSJA, seems like he wants us to fail :(
He seemed like a nice guy at first, but maybe online teaching is not his thing
mski is the best professor ive had with online classes. we had prerecorded lectures & zoom review sessions to do lecture independently & review together. yes he shouldve allowed us to use turnitin earlier. BUT hes never taught abi102 online nor given more assignment over exams. plus yall should know how to NOT plagiarize. its university education.
Stay away from this guy, he gets angry too much and takes it out on the students. We're dealing with enough schooling during COVID, and this guy makes it so much worse. Too bad no other professors teach this class.
I was surprised by the number of students who like Dr. M'ski. He has a DVM and a PhD so I thought that was very respectable. The issue is he reported sooo many students for plagiarism although he encouraged the students to use his lecture notes on assignments. Maybe he was going through a hard time and channeled his anger at the students.
This was a hard class, and you have to put in a lot of work to get a decent grade. Dr. M'ski didn't seem to help very much this quarter, and it seemed as if we were on our own. He also reported a lot of students to SJA at the last minute, which jeopardized their ability to graduate on time.
Other than the SJA incident, I don't believe Dr. M'ski was a bad and unhelpful professor. He was responsive to questions on Piazza and offered many live recorded sessions to review concepts. Office hours were recorded and he gave accommodations to many students, even offered up to 2% of extra credit just for doing the Kahoots. He tried his best.
He shouldn't of told the students that many were being reported to SJA. He should have sent out ONE email informing every student reported to SJA. Instead, he sent out emotionally-charged emails and then would tell students they were reported in waves. It gave all of us (including me, who wasn't reported) so much anxiety with every email from ABI.
It seems as if this professor likes to intimidate the students ): we work very hard and by threatening to report us he just stressed out everyone more. I wish he didn't threaten to report us for everything...
Seemed nice from the get-go. Later he proved that he wasn't. Told his students they could use his slides for assignments. He reported a good portion of the class to OSSJA. Poorly handled situation.
At first, I liked Dr. M'ski. But he progressively got meaner towards his students as the quarter went on. He wasn't horrible at teaching, but his lectures were long and dull.
I think Dr. Mienaltowski structured his class around cheating prevention. He didn't want give too much time on exams, he was super picky and actively looked for plagiarism, and he was always suspicious of the students.
Dr Mski was a fair professor and I enjoyed his teaching style. He gave us a 2-4% curve with the Kahoots and let us drop lowest quiz. Its sad that people do not understand that cheating and copying words from notes would mot come with consequences. Dont let these reviews scare you, if you put in the hard work you will get an A. I believe that.
Very picky professor and he is not very helpful. When we would ask questions on piazza, he was very short with his responses. Sometimes he let his emotions get the best of him. He wasn't a horrible lecturer but he was far from good.
Prof Mski was such an adorable and passionate professor. The class was not easy but Mski was always there to help you out. He gives you 35 mins for tests(about 14 questions) to prevent cheating and this should be fair since his questions are not hard if you've studied. Attend office hours and do the practice questions! TAs were very helpful too.
I understand people being upset over the plagiarism incident, but that doesn't take away from him being a great professor. He was always extremely caring when I'd email and gave me points back when the TA wouldn't give credit on certain parts of the assignments. Biochem is a difficult class and he made it so much easier to understand. Ty Dr. M'ski!
He's really nice, it's just a hard class. If you study and go to/watch all the lectures you will be fine. Use all his practice problems and try hard on the quizzes to buffer your grade. The second exam comes out of nowhere and most of the class failed it so be warned because he doesn't warn you.
The 2 midterms + final were online, open-note. Several EC assignments + ways to receive help (review sessions, OH, piazza); he also responds VERY promptly on piazza and on canvas. He was very understanding + flexible during this quarter, I really liked him, but if the tests were in-person I don't think I would have done as well, material is dense!
I rlly like Dr. Mski as a person & as a horse science professor. ANS 15 w him was fun & a breeze. He's a human teddy bear & is very knowledgable, but I liked him less as a prof when I took abi102. The material is v dense, maybe there's no way to make the material fun, but he would talk like he was unsure of the material sometimes & tht bothered me
Dr. M'ski was one of my favorite professors at Davis. His grading criteria is very clear and as long as you watch the lectures and do the kahoots you will do fine. The exams were fairly easy so long as you took decent notes. He gives you every chance to succeed, offering extra credit whenever he can. Super welcoming and funny too!
Dr. M’ski is the best! ANS 15 is a really fun class, highly recommend even if you have no prior horse experience. His wife’s guest lecture is particularly fun! Great class and super nice guy :)
highly recommend taking ANS 015 with Mienaltowaki if you're looking for an easy science GE. Was graded on weekly assignments based on lecture/videos, and an open note midterm/final. Used Kahoot to take attendance but you could miss classes and get EC. Nice guy, and would still be an interesting class if you dont know anything about horses, or do.
The class is test heavy (70%) but there are opportunities for ec. Participation isnt mandatory, but there are iclicker questions every day. Lectures can be boring, especially since most of the class is half asleep at 8am. So, expect to do a lot of at-home studying after class. Overall very caring, drops low hw scores sometimes. Exams are fair
He uses IClicker as a way to keep track of attendence! Be sure to attend lecture everyday otherwise you wont get credit for the clicker quesrtion. They are also amazing to use for review for an exam. The tests are handed back in a timely manner which is great. He provides lots of practice exam that is super helpful! Loved his class!
Great professor! Organized had set expectations no surprises for the exams and prepared you well. He was not the most empathetic professor or very accommodating/ receptive to feedback, but as a professor he was great! I would take him again.
I did not like his style as a professor but I can tell that he wanted what was best for his students and horses. The class was not too bad for a GE but his lectures didn't really keep me engaged
Prof. M'ski was extremely organized with his lectures and material and presented everything in a very clear and understanding matter. He let you know what material to expect on exams and had clicker questions, practice exams, etc. to also use for studying. He was an extremely nice professor who cared about people understanding the material.
Professor M'ski was such a sweetheart! He cared about his students a lot and wanted everyone to succeed. His iClicker questions were very helpful during lectures. He also posts multiple practice problems on Canvas to help prepare us for the exam. He was a wonderful professor who really knew his stuff!
Although I was not the biggest fan of how Professor Mienaltowski's teaching style (his explanations are not the clearest and his lectures are not the most engaging), he is a very helpful and caring professor. He wants his students to do well and gives us every opportunity to.
I love his lecture. Textbook is not necessary for this class. Lectures (iClickers) are not mandatory, but the discussion iClickers are. He is nice and caring. His exams are not too difficult, contains ~80% true/false and multiple choice questions and ~20% of short answers. Listen in class, do the practice exams and you will survive.
Honestly one of the best professors I have had at Davis. He cares about your success not only in ABI 102, but makes sure you understand how the material will be related to content in ABI 103. Tests were pretty difficult for me because there is quite a bit of memorization involved, especially when getting into glycolysis and the citric acid cycle.
Mienaltowski was a great professor. He really tried to get his students to understand the material, and was always available to help. The class is hard, but he really tries to break down the content and give real-world examples to keep it interesting. Best professor I've had at Davis.
Dr. M'ski very clearly tells you what you need to know for exams. Exams aren't cumulative. Weekly Discussions are mandatory but helpful. He tries to answer every question the best he can. Extra credit questions on every exam. Study what he tells you that you need to know and you'll be fine.
He bothered about trifling things, you'd beg never meet the time. Most of the time he seems good, that is why his rate is so high. This was the first time I hated a professor so much and the first time I wrote down the rating.
Dr, Mienaltowski was amazing! You can tell he really cares about his students and how they do in the class. Though lectures aren't mandatory, mandatory discussions on Fridays are very helpful as he goes over important points from lectures throughout the week.
I enjoyed 102 with Mski. He is pretty clear on what he expects on exams, and none of them are cumulative, not even the final which is nice. Lectures are recorded, and he does his best to explain complicated topics in a concise way. Grade is made up of Friday discussion attendance (iClicker questions), 4 assignments, and 4 final exams.
Dr. Mnski is such a sweet heart! I adore this man and he is such a great lecturer. His passion for his subject keeps me awake at 8AM and he is very clear on what he is going to test us on. Fast responder on piazza and loves that he reviews the topics mentioned previously at start of lectures. Take good notes and study them well to do good!
This class was fine. Lots of info in the lectures and fast-paced, but I am very familiar with horses so I found the class to be incredibly easy. Dr. Mienaltowski's lecture style was good, though he kind of reads off the slides. Overall, he seemed to care about his students. Exams were incredibly easy, just a midterm and final online and open-book.
This was the easiest class I've taken at Davis and so fun and interesting! I came in already knowing horses so if you're like me a lot of content is already known. Final/midterm online and easy, and assignments are easy and interesting. He tells lots of funny stories and he just wants you to learn. iClickers every class though so show up!
M'ski is the best!! Such a great lecturer and very clear on what is to come in exams. Gives lots of extra credit IClickers. He made me enjoy 8ams. 10/10 would recommend. He's just a nice guy and personable.
lectures were straight forward and the practice tests were similar to the actual exams. No tricky questions whatsoever. Lecture every day but only attendance was mandatory on fridays. having a good foundation of BIS 002A is extremely helpful. extra credit clicker questions if you attend non mandatory lecture but doesnt say when. loved the material!
Best teacher I've ever had. Lectures were so clear and he explains things so well. IClickers for extra credit throughout the week and then Friday discussions were the only mandatory class. Material was honestly pretty easy if you did well in BIS and CHE- only the final (uncumulative btw) had difficult material. Lots of ways to get points for an A.
He is the best professor I've ever had in my life.
Prac exams harder than actual exams, so if you study the material its an easy A, no trick questions. OH are super helpful. Lectures are recorded and only disc is mandatory but he gives EC iclicker randomly so its in ur benefit to go to class. Lectures were well organized, and Dr. M'ski is a v fair & kind professor. No final exam, just 4 midterms.
He was a great professor for Horse Husbandry, I took this class on a whim and having no experience in horses but some in science. It all was cohesive and he is a very caring professor, doesn't want you to fail and geniunely learn something from this class! I would take another class with him but maybe one without horses lol.
Dr. M'ski is one of the best professors I've ever have. You can tell he really care about his students like how they feeling about the material and exams. he tried to make everything as easy as possible. Easy A for a biochemistry class.
He's nice but his lecture is kinda boring and disorganized. Exams are easy.
I love Dr. Mski. This class is hard but has very clear expectations for the exam and he is very kind about it. Unfortunate required 8am Friday discussion, but two are dropped. I think anyone can do well in this class, especially if you have enough time to dedicate to it for a good grade
He literally explains what's going to be on exams and finals, he is so fair game. He explains everything super clearly, and really tries to make it easy for his students to understand. Just do the homework, which is one assignment every week, and go to class on Fridays for the iclicker questions. He tells you everything there's on the exam.
Professor M'ski is very caring and does his best to make sure his students succeed. He gives clear explanations and lectures are easy to digest. Attendance is mandatory only on Friday's which include iClicker reviews which are very helpful for midterms and the final. He is very clear about what to expect on his exams.
