This man is a far left wing as you can get. He stands for EVERYTHING I oppose. An odd amalgam of religion and socialism. Horrible experience.
Overall I enjoyed his class and felt that he had an interesting and different opinion on many subjects! Agree with him or not, he encouraged lots of debate in the class. My biggest problem was that I felt my final essay was graded unfairly.
Pretty hard class, but you learn tons. He really makes you think about life, which makes the course great. Hard exams though! Lots to remember, but worth taking from him.
Freaking hard class.. Makes you think, but the test are hard and you might get a clue of what its going to be on. Great class debate, but watch out.. he will jump on you for saying things.

Tough, he practically condemned the entire class for cheating and plagiarizing one the final paper. Also I dont recall anyone passing the final with an A.
Gets quite upset if you criticize micheal moore. hard test as he doesnt lecture the material.

Neither words, nor thoughts, nor actions can describe the absolute hatred I have toward this man. Having this man teach me his screwed up, biased version of Ethics and Values has almost scarred me for life. Less than poor teaching skill. Worst experience ever. Stay away.

Don't ever share your own opinions in class, becuase he'll shoot you down.
He is very bias. He is left wing. If you are republican and like to share your views, DONT.!! Learn to keep your mouth shut and you will get along with him. Good to learn, on how the other side thinks.
Avoid him at all costs, worst teacher ever. If you want to think for yourself and have your own opionions run for your life.... I just can't say enough about how much I hate this guy and I got an B in his class. He feels like his purpose of being a teacher is to save us Mormon kids.
He is an admitted socialist. I did tons of extra credit aced the final and still got a A-. He failed (F) my paper because he disagreed with me and for not other reason. I used the paper for a writing class and recieved an A.
For anyone really NOT interested in philosphy and say looking for a class to get your integrated studies credits filled, I would recommend Minch. The key to his class is to have study groups. He always reviews before the tests and actually gives the actual test questions. It's a good idea to review these questiosn in a study group.
If you are good at writing papers this is your teacher. Basically he has 2 papers and 2 tests. His lectures are extremely boring and liberally biased. He knows his stuff but you would never know it cause its so dry and boring to keep your attention.
He is a jerk. I wrote an exceptional paper for my final he disagreed with it, even when I quoeted some of his favorite philosophers. He wouldn't accept that it might be a little different than his standpoint. A true jerk, stay away unless you enjoy feeling belittled after every class.
Minch is a nice guy, but he is not very popular with the students. One of the few people who practices what he preaches. Few people know that he went to Haiti to help the poor while the other bozos in Utah were Rock Climbing at the Quarry.
Don't waste your time with this prof.He only cares about his own opinion. He is very disrespetful to our soilders, that they are all killers who played to many violent video games. Don't make any comments, because he won't letyou finish and doesn't care what you have to say.If you want a prof. that is in love with himself and his own views, take him
Poor teacher unclear don't disagree w him.
worst class ever. not only did i not learn anything i've never been more frustrated in my whole life. his arguments didn't make sense in any reality that i know of.
don't take this calls unless your smart. there is alot of reading, but as long as you know the study questions you'll pull of a passing grade. likes papers, kinda explains things good, a lot of little quizes. gives like 2-4 points of extra credit the whole semester, i don't know what 2 pionts will do. nice guy though
STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! This man is a liberal, fanatacal human being. All he cares about is spreading his message of hatred about the president, the troops, and the war in his classes. He judges your papers, no matter how well written, on his own personal opinions. I am shocked this man claims to be an ethics teacher when clearly has none.
This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. He is very opinionated and if your views are not the same as his he has no problem humiliating you in class. He is not good at taking others views and actually told us in class that we have no argumentitive basis because we are just stupid students.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES FROM PROFESSOR MINCH. This man is extremely closed minded. If you think differently than he does, that automatically makes your argument invalid. His tests aren't too hard, but he does make you do a lot of reading, and there is a minimum ten page paper due at the end of the semester. Do yourself a favor and stay away.
tends to only care what he thinks and tries to always disprove what you think.
Prof. Minch is an interesting find, considering he is a very liberal man in "Happy Valley." I disagreed with much of what he argued for, but he made no shortage of explaining why specifically he believed what he believed, and used evidence to back it up. Harder class, and exhaustive amts of reading. HUGE ego, but what Ph.D. in Philosophy doesn't?
Prof. Minch is one of the best professors on campus. I know he can come off combative, but if you go to his class intending to learn and keep an open mind, this will be a great class experience. He is not a teacher for lightweights, he will let you know when he disagrees with you. If you take his class take it because you want to learn.
One of the best teachers and classes I have ever had! This is a brilliant man and a wonderful teacher! Take one of his classes, Maybe you'll learn something!
He's a sneaky little bugger! Listen closely for anwers to tests in review of the text read.
His tests are SO hard and not straight forward. He tries to trick you on every question. It's like he wants you to fail.
his class is very hard. in the lectures he just rambled and said the same thing over and over again. the day before the test he would give out a study guide, but it wouldnt pertain to the test AT ALL! i dont feel like i have learned anything by this class. he falls very short of a great educator
I didn't think he was a bad teacher to take from since the class is required. The class was not hard, but you needed to go every day or else you needed to understand everything you read to do well on the test (unless you went to the review the day before where he practically gave away all the answers). There is an easy assign. due every day.
Minch is a very knowledgeable instructor who teaches the course well. You need to do all the reading assignments to pass the class (otherwise good luck on the tests). Reading is the only homework besides a final paper due at the end of the semester. I learned a lot from him. He does offer extra credit assignments throughout the semester.
I have heard that other teachers are better. He is nice but he sometimes has a hard time relating the material to the class. He was willing to work with students though.
This teacher engages you into the discussions. The people that complain about him are most likely the freshmen that aren't cut out for college anyway. Grow up!
the worst class ever
He "seemed" nice. But he sucks. grades way too harsh. Very opinionated on Politics. If you like Bush do not take him. READ READ READ!!! and you have to know how to write or you will fail!
Mr Minch is an outstanding phil professor. He is open minded to the views of others. He is extremely knowledgable about worldly affairs and philisophers of all times. He will open a once ignorant mind to the possibilities of bettering our worldy situation. I will always treasure his advice. You must also be open minded. I highly recommend him.
STAY AWAY, DONT TAKE HIM!!!This is the WORST professor EVER. He is not helpful at all and unless your willing to agree with everything he teaches you will not do well in his class. He is a ridiculously hard grader and if you write a paper that he disagrees with he will just fail you even if the content is good.
This is a REAL college course. This guy will make you examine your life and think about things in a way you never could before. 3 tests (with reviews the day before, which he tells you exactly what to study)and an 8 page paper (bring your A game). Plan on attending all classes, take really good notes and you will do well. Favorite course so far!
VERY DIFFICULT CLASS!! it's discussion based and attendance is required as 10% of grade. final paper is hard and he grades terribly even if you've written a good paper. i actually liked listening to him but he'll combat your opinion if he doesn't agree with it. take this class if you're gung-ho philisophy, otherwise, stay away.
Dr. Minch is an outstanding professor could ever exist. I enjoy his class and he is insanely and exceedingly knowledgable on the subject. He has so much knowledge to offer;it is just fantastic to find out what it is in his mind figuring out what it is he is teaching.
Professor Minch has been my least favorite professor since attending UVSC. He has an agenda and a captive audience to preach too. I found the class easy (I got an A) but I disagreed with alot of what he had to say, he is VERY one sided and if you have a different view he will tear you to shreds!!! Good Luck and keep your head down.
The class was easy as far as reading and tests, just take notes and come to class. But it did seem like he was too opinionated. He didn't seem like he liked mormons either. There was an argument in class where more than a few students felt like sharing their opinions of him. He didn't seem to handle it well. He got defensive and argumentive.
Minch is paid to provide a prespective outside that of the mormon bubble and does an amazing job. I disagree with him on most things but have the utmost respect for him.
Look, Professors are here at the University to challenge us! What a concept. College is not supposed to pander to all of our pet beliefs and theories. If you love learning, want to see what you're made of academically and be engaged in a really great discussion, whether you agree or not, take a class like this from a professor like Dr. Minch.
good class, sticks to the syllabus, encourages lots of discussion, Invested in the topic. Do the reading and show up. Dr.Minch is well informed on the topics he teaches and always shows up.
A waste of time. Class has nothing to do with the title of the class. This was a Philosophy of Religion class and he talked about the enviroment the whole time. Don't take him.
Dr. Minch is a challenging academic instructor. He is straightforward and cares deeply about students.Be prepared to read quality material, work hard, and you will leave his class a better student and, potentially, a better person. Not many professors offer this level of scholarship.Take advantage of the opportunity to learn from him.
Worst professor I've ever taken. That's all.
Good Professor. He does a good job at encouraging discussion and is thorough. He was very nuetral on religious topics and encouraged classroom response. Do your work and show up. Those who got a bad grade did it to themselves.
Take the class later in the day when people are ready to debate. Otherwise it will turn out to be a dull class. Fairly easy tests, and lots of reading.
His tests are really hard.. I've done fairly decent on them, you'll need to study for at least a few hours for each test. The only homework he gives is reading assignments each night- not to bad. Attendance and the book is a must. Nice guy, however, sometimes he makes students feel dumb if they ask a question he feels is a stupid question.
This class is very challenging. Read the readings every single day or you'll be lost. His tests are confusing and worded strangely. You also have to write an 8 page paper. If you're going to school full time, and working, I would suggest taking it when you're less busy. It's time consuming. Minch is a really great guy though and you'll learn a lot.
If you enjoy learning why America should be a socialist country then this class is for you! His test are easy...all you have to do is pick the most "conservative" answer as the false answer and you'll get 100%. He is the most liberal teacher I have had in my life and unless you are a "left-radical" student, he'll strive to prove you wrong.
Professor Minch knows his stuff, but he isn't very willing to listen to students when they challenge his ideals. The class would have been much more interesting if he was open to debate instead of just giving students half answers to their questions/arguments.
Minch is as hard as the babys rating him make him out to be. He is here to challenge you and make you look at things from a different view, but if you know the guy you know he will respect you if you argue your point and dont back down.
I would highly recommend you NOT take Ethics and Values from this professor. I didn't like him and found him really confusing.
Greatest teacher ever!! It was not easy, but so worth it. Minch will push everything you think you know about the world that you live in. You will come out of any of his classes as a better human being and member of society. Wake up and take a class from this man! The world needs more people like Michael Minch.
Michael Minch is a passionate man. His viewpoints are liberal so he dosent match up with many conservative students views. and if he disagrees with your views he will tell you so. This class made me think and challenge my own views and ethics. He wants you too defend your views and morals. The class made me want to be better. I was glad took it.
Michael Minch knows quite a bit and has no problem letting you know that. Quite honestly, I was thrilled that this class (Liberation Theology) was being offered but was soon disappointed to find that the class consisted mostly of a monologue of the opinions of Dr. Minch and literature that presumed one already agreed with the author. Frustrating.
very hard, do not disagree with him or he makes you look like an idiot in front of the class, his tests are the most confusing i have ever taken, very judging of your own beliefs and will take you down during class if you say something against his ideals. Hard paper as well, looking for something and he does not explain what it is from you.
One of the greatest teachers UVU has. Discussions are very interesting. Even if you don't do well on the tests, you can still get an A. Take advantage of the extra credit, 1% for each lecture/seminar.
Michael Minch hates America. I can't understand how UVU even hired him or keeps him on. Don't waste your time and money with his class... unless you agree with his extreme politics.
This guy is freaking unbelievable. He never answers your questions but rather tells a whole story about god knows what... Don't take this dudes class unless you want to fail. That is all.
Minch doesn't care about your ideas, but rather, tries to convert you to his totalitarian views on Communism. When you ask a clarifying question, he calls you stupid and embarrasses you in front of the class rather than giving an answer. Minch is nothing more than a babbling monkey and I highly recommend you avoid him at all costs.
He is horrible and doesn't teach. That is all...
Dr. Minch is a great teacher. If you aren't ready to defend your views with all you have then it's best to think through any comments you want to bring up in class. He will challenge the way you think, what you believe and why. It's not that he doesn't respect his students, he wants them to be secure in their morals.
Great professor who takes a beating on here because he asks you to think about your morals and views (does not ask you to change them) If this offends you, find another class to checkoff your generals. Its easier to be offended than to think through what is being taught. If you came to UVU to avoid thinking and learning, this class is not for you!
I can see why Minch takes such a beating on this site. He wrote a great book about philosophical thinkers, but he takes their views and puts into a "Well, what he really means is..." This doesn't help me ground my moral views. I wanted to learn about different perspectives, not the same (his) perspective in different words.
I was expecting an ethics class, not a "You're stupid, let me tell you why" class. Very disappointed. Didn't learn a thing. F rating. Find someone else.
A lot of students complain about professor Minch but I'll guarantee those who complain about his the loudest never read the material or participated in class in a thoughtful manner. He isn't rude at all and his assignments aren't over the top demanding. If you make a comment in class just be prepared to defend it and show why it is reasonable.
Dr. Minch offers a perspective that is very different to what most people in Utah believe. You don't have to share his beliefs at all to do well in the class. If you participate, take notes and ask for his input, he'll go out of his way to help you out. I learned a lot from him, just come to class with a thick skin.
Class is boring. You can never tell what is his opinion vs. the author or writer of the editor the discussion is about. Not inpsiring and doesn't help you to understand the lecture. Very dull. I would not take this class with him. If you ask a question he will most likely argue with you and turn it around on you.
Dr. Minch is a very intelligent man. His lectures are interesting and encourages students to participate. However, make sure that you can back up what you say because he will challenge your response. He makes you really think about your beliefs and views on politics, religion, but I enjoyed that because then I could be sure about what I believe in.
Loved taking his class. I am inspired every time I go to class by his lectures and discussions. Very respectful to other's beliefs and does his best not to offend anyone. Very smart and knows what he's talking about. Would definitely take a class from him again if I need to!
I love taking Minch's classes! He knows his stuff, and people who don't like his classes probably didn't read and participate. He's very respectful of your views and does his best to help you, if you ask for help. Definitely take advantage of his Extra Credit opportunities, they are very helpful if you struggle in his classes!
Dr. Minch gave good lectures but he never posted grades so I didn't know my grade for the semester until after the semester. There is a ton of reading and the tests are weirdly worded so sometimes it's hard to do well on the tests but he makes up for it with extra credit. He let us watch modern movies for extra credit so that was fun.
Prof. Minch is extremely smart, knows is stuff on this subject for sure. I had no problems with the class until after the election. Post election thought he become much more comfortable talking about his personal views, and sticking less to the material. He mostly kept to the material, but I paid for material, not his political views.
He was a really good professor. He knows his stuff and is passionate about it. I don't feel as though he fed me his opinions or wouldn't let me speak mine. I felt as though he was very open to everyones ideas. I do understand what people mean about his tests being worded weird. That part was hard, but he grades generously as long as you go to class
Despite my intellectual crush on Dr. Minch, he is very hard to take from if you are not a philosophy major. Class discussions are very dense and discussed in ways that were hard for me to understand without the philosophical background a lot of the students had. Good overall but kinda stressful for me.
Minch is a great guy but his teaching style is beyond frustrating. He'll have you read and write as if you have nothing else going on in your life and you'll be left wondering what in the world it is your suppose to be getting out of the material and his tests reflect it. If you want to actually grasp the material, take someone else.
If you actually read the textbook, and, you know, take notes, then you'll be fine. Minch is a fair grader as long as you show that you've broken a sweat in the process.
Just got a paper back from being graded by him. I had opposing views to some of his very liberal ideals, therefore, I got half-credit. Make sure to match your views with his while he's your professor so you can get a decent grade. I saw his bad reviews on here and still took his class, so now all I can do is warn other people. Save yourselves.
This class wasn't for me. It was kind of like debate. Everyone argued and had an opinion about everything, which isn't a bad thing. I felt I missed out on teachings when both the teacher and class would go on tangents about unrelated topics.
Dr. Minch is probably the most intelligent man ever. I learned something new every class. My perspectives have changed since taking the class and I am so thankful that I did get Dr. Minch as my professor. He makes everything clear and is very helpful. If you go to class, participate, and listen to the lectures, you will do fine on the quizzes.
This was the worst class I took this semester! The professor was awful and never made anything clear. Nobody in my class understood what we were learning about or how we were supposed to write the paper that was due! Everyone was extremely lost and he was never helpful when we would ask questions. His lectures were boring and I learned nothing.
This professor makes you buy a textbook that he wrote. His class is 100% based off of his own opinion. He doesn't teach you anything and his classes are so boring but you HAVE to go to class. There is no homework besides TONS of readings and your entire grade is based off of three tests. This is by far the worst class I have ever taken.
Professor Minch gives you a syllabus at the beginning of the course that is ambiguous at best and treats it like it is law and he has spoken very clearly and is flabbergasted at the mere idea that you are uncertain on a few of its key points. He gives very little tests and grading options, so your grade is made up of 3 tests and a paper. Good luck.
Papers every week. Discussions that are graded more intensely than your essays. Very text heavy.
Dr. Minch is an incredible professor. He sees potential and works with you to reach your greatest level of thinking and understanding. He truly values his job and the students that he interacts with. He will provide you with endless opportunities, a great resource for networking. I was shocked at his previous reviews. Amazing professor.
The homework is spread out enough to the point where it is doable, but the assignments are difficult. You will usually have two quizzes and a discussion for one week and then a writing assignment for the next week. He grades the discussions pretty harshly and even if you read all of the material he provides for the week, the quizzes are still hard.
Would not take this professor again. Grades way too harshly on the huge amount of homework he gives. He also takes too long grading, I had to wait 3 weeks for my final paper to be graded. Overall just not a great professor. Made you feel dumb for not getting the answer right.
I'm kind of surprised by the rating this professor has. He's very passionate and his lectures are very enjoyable. I guess I suggest only taking this class if you are really interested in philosophy/political ideology. He is a very interesting teacher, however, a majority of the class is him talking & answering questions, not a lot of discussion.
My favorite professor at UVU.
