This class is all bull ****. Def. take a differnt teacher.
Very smart and interested in the material and the students. Worth taking.
Makes you feel like a fourth grader all over again.
you will learn a lot from this class. he does make you feel like a fourth grader, but he makes you want to do the work. you have to write a lot of papers, but i think its worth taking.... he's a fair guy.
I like him, I think he really cares what you have to think and say. He makes you do a lot of work and that's what we're here for-to do work and learn new things. I think he's worth taking, writing classes could be a lot worse, trust me!
He is smart and enthusiastic. I do think he cares very much about writing and students. Worth taking.
Likes to go on power trips
he starts out really nice at first and then gets really weird and has mood swings. He is very unclear about what he wants and a lot of busy work. I wouldn't recommend taking him.
so unclear with what he wants for his assignments, so moody by the end. lots of bull**** work that doesn't count. hard essay grader, TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER
I thought this was oging to be a fun class, but his assignments are vague and I am always unsure of what he wants. Even when I am trying very hard I still do poorly. I feel like he misunderstands a lot of what the class says a majority of the time.
This dude is **** all over the place. Very unclear about assignments and wont get off of Williams and Colombs bosack.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! i wouldnt if i were you!! He is the most unclear and unhelpful teacher i have ever had in my life. He also tries to make you feel dumb and he doesnt seem to care what you have to say. He seriously is on a power trip.
Have no idea what this guy is talking about half the time. Very abstract and never specific. I write worse now than what I did before I took this class.
seems nice at first. never know what he is talking about. assignments are very unclear and graded hard. way too much work for gwrit 103. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!! I never knew a male teacher could have such mood swings. He is very unclear with assignments and goes on power trips. He also gets personally offended on topics that he brings up. Definitely dont take this class!
SAVE YOURSELF and take another teacher! very unclear..you leave class even more confused on what to do and you get TONS of busy work that doesn't count. Grades hard too...avoid him at all costs!
lots of work, but you'll learn a lot.... i don't know why everyone seems to hate him so much... i have an A and i'm not doing that much. Talk to him, and he will help you.

wow-i hate this guy-too much work that doesn't make any sense at all. he is pretty nice, i'll give him that-but he's a horrible teacher-random assignments that take forever and are boaring and graded difficultly-take any other professor----please
Thought he was so great at first. It's not like the work is really hard, it's just that the stuff he teaches is pointless. He doesn't know what he's talking about, we don't know what he's talking about... Likes to assign random things that're irrelevant
I can't stress enough how awful this guy is. His assignments are confusing and its hard to get an A on anything you do. He has mood swings and he goes off on power trips. You have homework every class and write tons!!Don't take this class!!
I do not think he is really that bad. He does require a lot of writing, but he will help you whenever you ask. He is good about communication and keeps class very open for questions and comments. Sometimes is erratic, but seems to care about students.
very unclear with everything. bull**** work, but only 3 papers. says he gives very few As. unfair for a gwrit 103 class that you must pass!!!

Does not explain anything. Very Vague about assignments and treats you like you are in high school. Try to advoid if possible, unless you want to be very confused and make assignments up
He is a good teacher. Only for students who want to expand their writing skills.... If you are only concerned about your grade, then take someone else, but if you want a teacher to change you, hes your man.
He does only one thing well- sweat to the point that his sleves are soaked. You have to read 3 essays a week, respond to them and write your own. Way too much work for a GENED, avoid at all costs
He looks like Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice. This instructor needs to teach 300 or 400 level courses. The writing assignments are meaningful work, but you will be writing at a higher level of difficulty than you expect at a 100 level writing class.
Great class! One of my favorites. Changes the way you think and the way you approach writing. Loves participation from class. Cares deeply about students. Lots of reading and work, but worth it in the end!
Great teacher, one of those teachers you will remember for a long time. Changes the way you think, meaningful assignments, VERY helpful and cares a lot about his students. For those who are looking to expand their mind, and engage in REAL work, this is 4
You will never learn more in any class you take at JMU. If you're more than a cry-baby grade-grubbing frosh, TAKE THIS CLASS. If not, take another class b/c the work is killer. But the payoff...this is what college should be.
fun class. never read took a great works course and glad its this one. lots of reading but worth it so far.
Best professor I have had so far at JMU. Will opened up to reality and encourage you to expand your mind. The class is hard, but if you are at college to get an education, then take it.
You would need a HUGE frdige to put all the work up you write in his class, too many essays, but when all is said and done, I have never been more satisfied with my work or with a teacher. If you can't write, don't take the class, but if you want to expand what you know, Go for him! VERY funny too..
Best GWRIT prof you could get. his class is challenging but you are guaranteed an A if you work hard on your essays. No final exam, but you have to turn in a portfolio of two essays at end of semester. Overall, kind man and great teacher.
Best GWRIT professor and the overall best professor I've had so far. If you want to learn how to write well at college level, definitely take this class. There's a lot of writing and reading involved, but he'll work with you so that you can succeed. A funny guy, keeps the class entertained. TAKE THI
He is a good teacher, but if you want to have a life, and maintain your sanity do not take this class. He assigns 3 pages papers due every class period and when there aren't papers there are huge reading assignments. But he's a very nice man and is always willing to help you so you can do you best
This was the best course I have ever taken at JMU. He assigns some wicked books to read and students have to do lots of writing. You learn a lot tho and by the end of the course you want to keep in touch with him. Cool guy, too. Dumb jokes.
Way too much work for a gwrit class! Very helpful-and lots and lots of reading- tough grader, definitely a challenge!!
memorable teacher but you will work and write more than you know. I wrote about 70 pages last semester but I got a 98 in the course. If you challenge yourself you'll do well. Class is great, always go b/c he helps. When its over you'll be SO happy, but you will have become SUCH a better writer
I hated writing before this class and I still do. You write a lot in this class, but Michael helped me improve my writing by SOO MUCH. Highly recommend him if you like to write or want to improve.
He is a great professor, my favorite here so far! He gives an equal amount of work and grates fairly on how much effort you put forward. He is always avaliable to talk to and ask questions of. He will encourage a student to expand what they are able to do - helped me regain enjoyment for writing!
I think Michael is a great teacher! He definitely wants his students to grasp the concepts that he teaches about. He tries really hard to make everyone invovled and is nice about turning papers in late and stuff for different reasons. I would take him, lot of work (mostly papers), but worth it!!!!!
Michael is a great teacher. He helped me improve my writing by so much. He is extremely approachable and likes to just talk to the class and relate to the students. Yes, there are a lot of papers but what do you expect, it's a writing class!?! I highly recommend taking him for GWRIT 103. He's funny
He has a really great personality..very energetic! He will give you a lot of homework..either, like 2 hrs of reading or a paper. I learned a lot though. It's pretty easy to get an A...just participate!
I thought Michael was a wonderful professor. He challenges students to work to their full potential. He is always upbeat and there for the students. I would recomend him to anyone who is looking at taking this class. His grading is not hard. If you show effort and participate you will do well.
He is an awesome teacher. He is really into what he does.
I loved having Michael as my writing professor. I hate writing, and this class was actually one of my favorites. He is really excited all the time. There are several easy responses and a few essays. He is really helpful and sometimes funny. I really recommend taking GWRIT from him.
AMAZING MAN! Michael is one of the best instructors I have ever had. He is very interested in what his students want. He will also push you to write as well as you possibly can. Before this class I had no interest in learning more about writing. Michael made it a great experience and I am now considering picking up a minor. If you can, get his clas
Michael is one of the best prof I've ever had. I have learned an incredible amount in this class. It is from 7-8:15 on Tu/Th and I haven't skipped once. That says something. Awesome class discussions. He's so enthusiastic and passionate about writing and it rubs off. I strongly encourage you to take him!
He's really nice, but I HATE this class. It's hard to figure out what he wants sometimes, but if you email him, you might get a clear answer out of him. This is WAY too much work for a Gen ed. He's all about Gen ed and thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. VERY enthusiastic. Corny jokes.
Lots of writing, but it definitely made me a better writer by the end of the course. The papers were actually fun to write because you could say what you wanted without worrying about being politically correct. He cares more about the content that the grammer, structure etc. which i thought was a plus. But be prepared, there's alot of writing.
This class was awesome! I've never met anyone more passionate about life and learning. It seems like a lot of reading and writing but its not that bad.He grades papers very easily, never takes off for grammar or something he may not agree with. Some pop quizzes on the readings so make sure you read them.Take this class it'll make you a beter writer.
Nice guy and very enthusiastic, but WAY too much work for a 200-level class. Some assignments are interesting, but others are far too abstract. He doesn't pay attention to grammar/punctuation/etc. which is BAD if you are a serious writer. Overall, I didn't learn alot except the idea that "Everything's an argument." (Which isn't that profound).
This was the best class I have taken at JMU. Dr. Moghtader is enthusiastic and changed my whole perspective of writing for the better. Take this class!!!
Michael is the best teacher I have had at JMU! He was so interesting, and made a three hour class go by really fast! This class made me declare a writing minor because it was so interesting! Take this if you are IDLS/Education!!!!
Easy to get along with...tries really hard to make you like the class...the advertisement part is really interesting. discussions were always thought-provoking...also there were no wrong answers during discussions...pretty nice guy who likes to laugh a lot.
Honestly I've never met a man that cared so much about his students before. He's always quick to respond to emails, meet outside of class, and makes a lot of thoughtful comments on papers. The class is not a breeze-you have to write a lot of papers and attend class, but if you participate and put effort in, he'll make sure you're okay.
Michael's class was one of my favorite classes so far. We only had about 10 students and we sat in a circle and discussed assigned articles/readings. He's VERY easy to get off-topic, but sometimes I think it's because he's too smart for his own good. He truly cares about his students and makes each class interesting.
One of my favorite classes at JMU so far. One of my favorite professors so far. Moghtader has a refreshing perspective on the content of this course. Take it- it will enhance your outlook on school and communication.
I didn't want to take this class but I got to tell you after working with Dr. M for the past 12 weeks, it was worth it. Come to class ready to talk about assignments and you'll get an A for participating. Assignments can be complicated but he meets with you to help you see things. Cool dog.
AWESOME professor! I was not excited about taking this class at all, but he's great. He assigns interesting readings and treats you like a fellow human being rather than just another student. He's a somewhat tough grader but he just wants to push you to write better and do your best. Take him!!!
I must admit- he is a nice guy, very into his subject, good class discussion-BUT definitely one of the hardest graders I've ever had. At least 20 pages of dry theory reading due every class. Not to mention daily exchange letters and assignments that make you want to quit school/commit suicide/want to poke your eye out. He ruined my spotless GPA.
This man's perspective on any issue always rang true with me. The class spends the semester discussing the most effective ways of teaching, and it's always an engaging experience. He feels more like an insightful friend than a professor.
strange but nice guy. be prepared to participate A LOT!
I hated this class!! He laughs excessively and is unclear about almost all of his directions. Take another professor if at all possible. The whole class consists of writing about photography. We did 12 papers the whole semester (not including drafts) so your whole life consists of papers the whole time that you take him.
Michael is a really nice guy, I enjoyed the class but hated the extent of the writing. Be prepared to learn all about photography and then write about it in 4 different essays. Prior to each essay be prepared to write 2 2-3 page papers in response to some incomprehensible reading, and discuss all of it in class or group meetings.
Michael is the best writing teacher I have had in a long time! He does push you, but only because he is trying to make you better. This class is a writing class, so be prepared to write, but he grades fair. Take him if you can!!
He's really into his works and want his students to be also. Difficult class lots of papers but it's an honors writing class...
You want to learn? He is the god of writing and rhetoric.
Mr. Moghtader is a really cool and intelligent guy. No one wants to take GWRIT, but he made it bearable. Since it was an honors class, there was a lot of reading and writing assigned, but I learned so much through it all. You are graded on participation, but it's easy to be involved in discussion. If youre willing to work hard, I recommend him.
Great professor! if his guidelines are confusing, just go to his office hours. YOU WILL WRITE A LOT, but isn't it a writing class???
I wasn't a great writer before taking his freshmen writing class but he was extremely helpful and i am now a confident writer. The coarse load wasn't to hard. Showing up in class doesn't drop your grade directly but if you miss class then you miss a lot of new material and that will make you fall behind. Over all best english/writing teacher ever
Dr. M is one of my favorite professors. At first I was confused about some of his directions. But I went to his office hours and it helped out a lot. Group conferences are great for peer review, which he requires for some assignments. We read and wrote a lot. He created a great classroom atmosphere and had funny stories about his dog. Great Profess
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! He is so funny but also very passionate about his subject. I learned so much in his class. We read a lot of books, but honestly you just had to get enough out of the book to be able to discuss it in class. He is so helpful and truly wants his students to do well. I would definitely recommend his class to anyone.
Moghtader all in all is a cool guy. He seems very intrigued with the subject and makes class energetic even if all the kids sitting in it are bored to death. But lets be honest, writing isnt the most exciting thing to learn. His directions are unclear at times but all in all he's a decent and understanding teacher.
Definitely a teacher who knows his stuff and wants you to get the most out of the class. Wants to give you freedom, but grades from unclear instructions. Don't take if you want an easy A. There's a lot of reading, and print your stuff at the library or you'll have to keep buying new ink cartridges. Take this if you really want to gain writing skill
He is really really helpful. More than happy to help you on any paper, great teacher. HARD GRADER. be careful and edit your papers to his revisions and then ask him again. Def. need to work hard in this class but totally worth taking
He's a nice guy, helpful, funny, really passionate about what he is teaching. The only thing I had a problem with is the material. Don't take this class if you aren't interested in teaching.
He is a very nice teacher and passionate, but in his GWRTC all we wrtie about is the LEARNING TO WRITING, the ART OF WRITING etc., after a while it is very diffcult to write about....writing, I recommend picking another professor with more subject variety it will easier on you in the long run
This class is all extreemly tedious busy work. More readings than you will be able to count, and extreemly high expectations for a gened class. Dont take it, you will be miserable.
Discussion. A lot of papers, but they are relatively short. No midterm or final, just a longer (8 page) paper at the end of the semester. He really knows his stuff & is a great & enthusiastic teacher. If you do not like writing or are not good at it & are not looking to be pushed, I would not recommend him. You can email him, he'll edit your paper.
Dr. M is an extremely nice guy. He likes to make jokes and he's VERY passionate about his discipline. Lot of readings/busy work but it could be worse. It's not an "easy" A but it's definitely manageable. Just do the readings/work and visit him for help on papers. If you get "stuck" with him, it probably could've been worse.
Moghtader is an interesting man. His class is a bit of work but if you put the effort in he will notice and appreciate that. Things are usually unclear like projects and deadlines but he's extremely willing to help and will always clarify if you ask questions. Not a horrible class, I would take if you don't mind attending every single class.
I really liked this class! Professor Moghdater tried to make it really interesting and he has a great sense of humor. Although this was one of the General Education classes required for freshman year, his class was definitely different. There aren't any tests, really at all, and we read articles that were pretty or somewhat interesting.
Moghtader is probably one of the best professors I've ever had! He's always at his office hours and willing to help you if you need it. A few quizzes on assigned readings and an easy final exam. If I could take his class again i would
This class is an easy A if you put in the work. Read all of the assigned reading and study it because there is probably a quiz on it. I didn't get a single grade back until the end of the semester so that was frustrating but he's a good guy with an obvious passion for writing. Learn his style and write with it, and you will be golden.
Moghtader's class was long to sit through. He rambles and admits to doing it himself. If you consider yourself a patient and calm person take the class because you'll end up doing fine. If you are not patient like me, DONT TAKE THE CLASS. He will help you if you go to him and ask but you'll have to keep asking for clarification on what he's saying
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! The amount of reading we have to do each class is ridiculous (sometimes 100 pgs +). Makes his opinions clear which can sometimes make the class uncomfortable. Assigns 3-4 page papers with only a week to write it. Sweats a LOT but that's not relevant. He's a nice dude, but each class is painful to get through.
We don't use any textbooks, but we read a LOT. Each class has 80 pages of assigned reading. He uses a lot of really weird/vague metaphors. There are several 3-4 page papers, as well as a 3 part final that is ALL (hand)written. If you skip more than allowed, he drops your letter grade by 1/3 (an A- goes down to a B+) for each unexcused absence.
I am sad to see that most reviews for Moghtader are not for WRTC. If you are a WRTC student taking any of his senior level courses, I would strongly recommend his classes. I took Teaching Writing with him in my junior year and he was an amazing professor. Very passionate, knows what he is talking about, and truly cares about students!
This class is participation based and professor Moghtader makes it seem as though any opinion is ok and its key to be honest. His opinions are radical and he is unable to accept when anyone disagrees with him. If you don't share his opinion you are wrong. There is way too much reading for a gen ed and he is way to critical of writing assignments.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. If you have a different opinion than him forget about getting a good grade. He has his own grading scale for each person based on whether he likes you or not. Lots of reading that you have to do to pass and he's a strict paper grader. literally 3/10 would not recommend to my enemy.
I really enjoyed this class however I did not take it as seriously as I should have. DO THE READING because almost 10x out of 10 there will be a pop quiz and pop quizzes are what hurt me from getting an A in the class. Dr. Moghtader is a great guy and loves when students go for extra help but 3 missed classes and your grade drops a whole letter
