this guy is quite helpful.
Assigns lots of work, but the questions are always worth your time and effort. Very good lectures.
Tiny mistakes in calculations don't prevent him from being a good teacher. He assigned a lot of work, but that's the way you learn the stuff!
Dr. Monagon is one of the best professors I have ever had. In class he goes through material at a very good pace so you never really get lost. His exams are very straight forward. I would recommend taking classes offered by him.
Gives long assignments, which are worth a large portion of your grade. Lots of feedback on your work.
Excellent, Best professor
Brilliant prof! Gives incredible lectures that are well worth your time. Assignments are long but very much worth doing as you learn alot from them. Take a class with him if at all possible because you will learn more from him than probably any other math prof at sfu. You will not regret taking a class with him.
Excellent Prof. He really knows his subject well. Rings and Fields have been one of the most interesting courses I have taken. If you complete all the homework you will do fine!
Very clear, very fair, not very hard. Loves using MAPLE to program (whether necessary to course or not, but give him credit he helped program it), so keep this in mind. Final exam is marked hard though, but all in all a great professor.
He won't scale our marks so you get what you did on assignments and midterms. Class notes are quite tedious and lots of writing which is totally avoidable. Instead of proving theorems, I would rather have Maple in front of me and go over sample question related to assignments during class. I would say.. his class is extremely boring and not helpful
Excellent Prof!!! midterms are easy~ assignments are little bit long but really helpful. the best part is he allows you bring a two-side cheat-sheet on final~~!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Assignments were extremely important(10% X 6 = 60%),and the take-home final was based on what you did on your assignments. Therefore, start your assignments as early as you can. When you get stuck, go to his office and he is always willing to help. Don't expect you will get an easy high grade, as this is a 400 level course.
He was very, very, very, VERY clear. SO CLEAR. Assignments, midterms and final were all very easy they just take time. Make sure you put the time in as you go along to understand everything and you barely have to study. Allowed cheat sheet into exam which makes it easy to remember all the "formulas". He was a bit boring, but SO THOROUGH.
First two months were okay but after that he started being very sloppy, vague explanations, assigns questions that we weren't taught in class. Did not teach us how to do the very basic assignment questions, leaving students clueless and confused. Makes many mistakes during lectures
He was an alright prof. One of my first profs that actually cared about you. Assignments and final are long and tough, so be prepared for a lot of work. You'll learn a lot of interesting stuff. Make sure you have a good understanding of algebra and coding before taking this class.
The best! Take his course if you are not strong in Math. Everything is from his lecture note so make sure you go to class and write down everything that he says and writes. Also do all assignments and get help from TAs at Workshop. Then, I guarantee you get at least B.
best prof i've ever seen
Textbook for this class is extremely relevant. Lots of Maple in this class. Proofs are a bit shaky in lecture, and sometimes has a hard time explaining stuff. Gives hints on which homework questions will be marked. Long lectures, long assignments, not difficult.
Very approachable professor. His teaching style is very structured and organized. Talks more about details and examples than the big picture.
Very passionate about the subject. I especially liked the applications that we were taught, and the Maple code. He is very humble, and I feel like he has helped many students. Take a course with this professor! :)
His lectures are organized and he explains every example step by step. although he talks a lot in the class, he is patient to students. He is definitely a great prof!
Nice guy who cares. Will give students help like assignment extensions. Makes a moderate effort to put course materials online, but notes are an exception. Exams are fair. Gives a decent amount of assignments (8 over 12 lecture weeks). Class is fairly boring.
Michael's lectures are clear and organized. If you go to all the lectures, you will know everything so that reading the textbook is not even mandatory. Assignments are pretty lengthy. Each probably takes up 6 to 10 hours, but questions are well related with the course material. Tests are really fair. Overall, one of the best math prof in SFU.
Pros: Nice person who is very approachable; He has a deep interest in applying the course material; His tests are the definition of fair; He cares deeply about his students and is very understanding if you're having difficulty with the course; His assignments are very fair. Cons: the book he uses sucks; he doesnt give a big picture of the course
Quit a lot hand writing notes. He never puts his note on canvas so you cant miss nearly any class. The most funny thing is he gives us the review questions before the midterm without any answers. And he also make a lot of mistakes in his handwriting notes, if no one point out that, he just lets it go.
Prof. Monagan is one of the few professors at SFU who actually knows how to teach. He is caring, helping, and willing to take feedback. He takes his time to go through proofs and explain concepts clearly. During office hours he reaches out for you and goes out of his way to explain things simply. Take him if you have the chance.
Great sense of dry, witty humour and amazing lecturer. There is marked homework but it is definitely the right quantity and quality of questions. The tests are very fair.
Best Math prof I've had at SFU. He's straightforward, has a sense of humour and he genuinely cares about the students. His exams, tests and assignments were fair. You can tell how passionate he was about the subject and he knows how to teach it. AMAZING PROF!
Professor Monagan is a fantastic lecturer. The pace and the focus of the lectures is always excellent. You will learn a lot from just sitting in class and listening. He is also very well organized. Assignments and assignment solutions were always ready on time. I felt very well prepared for the tests and quizzes. You will learn in his class.
I highly recommend.
Teaches extremely well and makes content easier to understand. Tests and marking were fair but the final difficulty was jacked up to the max. Overall respectful and caring to students. One of the best SFU profs I've had.
This prof was definitely one of the best math professors I've ever had, and one of the better ones i've had at SFU. His in-class examples were actually useful and he wouldn't skip out on the steps, unlike other math professors that don't even go over any examples. His exams were extremely fair and mostly from the HW. Easy to pass with practice
Dr. Monagan is so organized and it really helps you never get lost. his lectures are interesting and exams and assignments are pretty reasonable
As far as class structure goes, this is easily one of the best. First off you get extremely clear lectures from Dr. Monagan. Every 1-2 weeks you have an assignment on these lectures which gives you quick feedback. After every two assignments, you get a midterm. If you attend lectures and do the assignments, you will succeed in this course.
Michael Monagan is an amazing professor. I took MACM101 with Binay and I found it exponentially harder than this course. Monagan has extremely clear lectures and doing his homework and assignments is very rewarding because the exams are super fair and related to the assignments. He answers all the questions students have clearly. Best professor.
Provides high quality, straightforward lectures. He is clear at explaining concepts and identifying which are of higher priority than others, and gives very thoughtful and in-depth explanations when questioned. He is not afraid to give of his own time to enhance the lecture. If he is available for 201, jump on it - makes a difficult class easy.
I wish all the professors at SFU are as wholesome as him. I'm not sure what else can I ask for: he's organized, midterms are easy and straight out of assignments, he's good at explaining... There are so many things about him that I appreciate. Final exam was difficult for me since I didn't study much but 11/10 I recommend this professor.
Mr. Monagan is probably the best prof I've ever had at the university level. There are no surprises when taking his courses. He takes a tough course and makes it very understandable and even interesting. Midterm and Final are based on assignments so no real surprises. If you ever get to take him always pick him, legit best prof I've had.
This was not an easy course. I often felt that the assignment questions were unrelated to what we learned in lectures, and felt lost simply going off of lecture content alone (YouTube helps). However, the exams were all quite reasonable and contained questions almost word for word out of the assignments. Trev Tutor (YouTube) is your friend.
Fair assignments and exams that you can do well on if you study the material.
Best prof during the online class, the course is really organized, weekly assignment (hard but definitely learn something), midterms are easier than the assignments
Dr. Monagan is a responsible instructor and he did deliver the course content in a clear way. Office hours were always helpful. Study the lectures, do the bi-weekly homework, and you'll be alright doing the take-home final.
Probably one of the best professors in the math department. Very knowledgeable about the course content and math, and explains things very clearly in both lectures and labs. Highly recommend taking a course with him!
Great teacher who is able to get the student's struggles and perspectives, great at the explaining and has practical knowledge of CAS (was Maple developer as grad student). Homework is closely related to lecture and his notes are sufficient without needing to Google. Even as an engineering major I found this class interesting and engaging.
Lots of assignments. If you attend the lectures and labs, you wil be ok.
Calculus is daunting, but Professor Monagan makes this course interesting through his clear and captivating lectures. He is patient, steady & willingly goes through the minutest of details. He is extremely approachable and cares about his students - you can tell he loves what he does. Overall, one of the best calc profs I've had.
great prof, almost makes me like calculus. very helpful with questions. lectures at a slow enough pace that you can follow along while also not taking too long. still a pretty difficult class in my opinion but could be so much worse with a different prof.
This was one of the best Math professors I've ever had in SFU. He does not rush through the concepts, and we have time to write our notes with him during class. His exams are extremely fair! For this class, make sure to practice many exercises, and you'll be fine! :)
This Professor made me enjoy calculus, something which I never thought it was possible. He really cares about his students, and as another review said, we can see that he really loves what he does. Definitely one of the best professors in SFU!!!
Its pretty shocking how he was able to explain such complex concepts so concisely. Going to class is definitely worth it - I didnt even read the book and got an A just with the notes from the 1 hour lectures. Such a nice dude.
Michael is an AMAZING professor, he actually made me really enjoy calculus and going to lecture at 8:30am. Calculus 2 is a notoriously hard course at SFU but Michael explains the material clearly and is very easy to understand. All his exams are fair. If you have a chance to take a course with Michael, do it, he is the best prof I have ever had.
Super Chill Professor. He is always available and ready for help. I definitely recommend him.
Wholesome professor and very knowledgeable in his lectures. This course focuses on a unique math software which he will guide you through with assignments to apply those skills on.
Dr. Monagan's lectures are extremely clear, and office hours are helpful for any clarifications regarding assignments which while long, are reasonable. As long as you understand how to code the homework problems, there is no need to worry about the 50% final. Don't miss the opportunity to take a course with him! He'll trick you into liking coding:)
Probably one of the best professors at SFU. He taught all the complicated materials really well and for someone who's weak in math, I came out with a pretty good understanding of the concepts at the end. Also very caring, and respectful and you can tell he wants all his students to succeed. I wish I could take more of his classes. 10/10 recommend.
Dr. Monagan is an amazing professor. He teaches the material with very clear and concise explanations. Make sure to attend lectures because the lecture notes can look confusing if you don't follow along. The exams were very fair with no surprises. He's also very chill and approachable since he cares about his students.
One of the best instructor which i have ever had in my entire life . The lecture is clear , helpful . His explaination is also on point . The prof really know and how to teach the material . It is like a lifetime experience for me .
Super nice and easy to pay attention in lectures, he was also very detailed in explanation and always noted these details for reference. Exam content was similar to the exam prep too and he's really considerate of his students. Took this class in fall term but had to come back to write a review cause I felt bad not praising him.
lectures are fine, hw can be long sometimes will need to stretch your brain, labs are really important, class was 5 assignments then a final exam, final exam was very fair
He's very approachable and good at delivering knowledge. His final exam was very fair and based on the assignments you did in the class. Assignments weren't insanely hard but definitely required brainpower, so take that as you will. Held multiple office hours spread throughout the week. Would highly recommend to take any class you can with him!
Monagan is perhaps the best prof I've had at SFU. He is caring and is vey obviously wants you to succeed. I highly reccomend choosing him as a prof if you have the chance.
Monagan is awesome. I'm actually sadly not enrolled in his class, but I did attend a few of his lectures and his were explained far better than my actual prof. He explains concepts so crystal clear, often much better than the textbook. His lectures alone are more than enough to do well. His gentle teaching style makes it so nice to come to class.
Michael Monogan. I think you're the best professor at SFU I've had thus far. Thank you for your hard work and generosity. Also he's willing to give a tutorial on how to use MAPLE (some software that helps explain derviatives, anti derivatives, everything)
Amazing proffesor. Exams were fair and relatively easy, very similar to what was taught. Lectures were very well done and concepts were explained perfectly. Thank you Dr Monagan.
Excellent prof. Very clear lectures and fair exams.
his lectures are very clear and organized, he goes slowly and explains the small details and doesn't expect you to remember weird things from past semesters, super approachable and open to questions. exams are very similar to the homework and lectures. best prof ever he's so kind and patient
An excellent professor who genuinely cares about whether or not the students understand. He writes out the lecture notes by hand so that students can follow along, and it makes it very easy to absorb the material. He posts the notes afterwards, but I found it took way less effort to just attend and take notes instead of going through them later.
Thank you for making this challenging course very straightforward and manageable
This man is actually amazing. I would suggest taking any math class with him, he is so good at teaching and making the content understandable. There is a lot of homework, however he is really good at having examples that are similar. The best math class I have ever taken.
Monagan was a great professor, despite the class being at 8:30 I genuinly looked forward to lectures, as he taught math 152 excellently and keeping everybody engaged. Homework was also really fair and the midterms were reflective of the homework and practice. Final was also very fair with no trick questions. Overall great professor!
one of SFU's best! all assessments were 100% fair. great explanations during lecture. sometimes pulled some jokes here and there to wake up the 8:30 AM class. enroll into his section whenever possible!
Great professor, explains concepts very well. Tests were relatively easy and mostly took from assignment or lecture material.
Honestly, a solid professor. He only teaches the things that are the most crucial. You could get an easy A if you can stay awake during the class which is at 8:30 in the morning.
I went into this class expecting at best a C+ as I struggle with math. Dr. Monogan is VERY clear about what he expects of us in exams/assignments and he is a well-spoken and patient lecturer. His lectures are concise with lots of worked examples. He guides you through every concept from scratch. 5/5 is an understatement.
Michael Monagan is a really good prof! His lectures are very clear and he teaches the material very well, would definitely recommend him. The assignments and exams are pretty straight forward, if you study a bit you'll be fine.
this man is a god sent. HE MADE MATH SO EASY. He was sometimes funny too. Honestly this man needs to be protected at all costs. I never missed a lecture. Assignments (8) and midterms (3) are similar to lectures. Final was a but iffy but overall amazing person.
Best prof I have had so far. I was always able to understand his lectures. Hes very clear as to what is on the tests and how we should study for them. He is also caring and funny. He doesnt have recorded lectures but he posts his notes which are easy to understand
Hands down one of the best profs at SFU. Lectures are extremely clear, notes are very organized, and exams are straightforward. He is one of the few profs that genuinely care about teaching. As others have mentioned, he is great at making complex concepts approachable for most people. Strongly recommend taking a course with Dr. Monagan!
Very clear explanations and lecture structure. Hand written notes with no lecture recordings but will post filled notes after. Midterm and finals are reasonable, weekly assignments + webassign.
Amazing professor, one of the best at SFU. He'll explain a concept like you're five. You'll understand the thought process behind doing something a certain way, rather than simply memorizing it. I'd heard MATH 152 is a challenging course, but Michael made it easy. Very reasonable workload. Highly recommend taking a course with him if you're able.
Michael Monagan has a very direct way of teaching - he gets straight to the point and doesn't add any unnecessary jargon. Very clear lectures and labs that are easy to follow, and you learn a lot. Assignments are generally fair, though there are often a couple questions that are more challenging. Overall he's great!
He's the best prof I have this semester. A breath of fresh air compared to all of my other profs because he is actually passionate about what he does, and it shows. Lectures are always done well with plenty of helpful examples - he's also funny! He goes out of his way to help you, even having office hours in the evening on Zoom. The GOAT for sure.
Michael is an amazing prof; so kind, caring and teaches clearly. He doesn't want to trick you or anything, some harder questions on the exams but always very fair overall. Technically, I had another prof for this class but would show up to his lectures (same exam for both classes, written by him). Overall, great experience!
Very direct and informative lectures. Although he posts his notes, going to all lectures and labs (1 of each per week) was very helpful. Assignments are every 2 weeks, no midterms. Every skill and concept needed for the assignments are covered in class in a very clear and succinct way. He really cares whether or not you understand.
I truly felt like I can't do Math anymore until I met Michael. He is my angel fr🥹 coming to heal my soul. He has such a nice accent that I was so into bcz I failed my Calc 2 as I can't listen and understand. His exam couldn't be fairer. And the best thingggg!!! He is so open and enthusiastic in his office hours even if it's over. He is caring fr🫶
Michael is a superb prof. I'd recommend him to anyone, he's so good at breaking down tough concepts and making them enjoyable. I always tried to make it to his lectures as they were worthwhile. Assignments are very fair too, just applications of lecture and lab material. If you're looking to improve your programming/math skills, take it for sure.
MATH240 was a very difficult course for me, but Michael made the material so understandable. I enjoyed going to every single lecture, he is also very open to answering questions during OH/outside of class which was great. He is a really caring prof, if you have the chance to take any math course with him definitely do not pass on the opportunity.
What can I say that hasn't already been said. I wish he could teach all my classes. If MATH makes you uncomfortable, take any math class with Monagan. He will show you how easy it really is. He explains everything very clearly and makes math accessible. He laughs, he smiles. He genuinely cares about students. Best prof. i've had at SFU hands down.
I had a solid experience in Monagan's MACM204 course this term. Lectures were well-paced with great examples, labs were super helpful, including the TA Garrett!! Assignments were a tad difficult, but good practice. Final was fair, as it was based on assignments and you get a 2 sided cheat sheet. He's a great prof, which is obvious from the reviews
If you take MATH 240 with Prof. Monagan, you can learn about everything by attending lectures. Despite being optional, I highly recommend attending a lecture, as it's just a life-changing experience to attend such a high-quality lecture. Also, he assigns about 20-40 homework problems over an average 10-day period. It's all on the midterms.
Super nice guy, seems like he actually likes teaching. For the midterms, understand all the assignment questions as test questions are pulled from there. If you put effort into doing the assignments yourself this class will be a breeze
He posted his notes which was nice but his lectures are just amazing. He was super prepared and the notes were easy to follow. The tests also weren't insanely hard, just understand the homework and the tests won't be too bad.
I've taken 3 math courses with him and all of them were phenomenal. If you have the chance to take a course with him, jump on it. MACM 204 was succinctly informative and useful. His lectures were easy to follow and the tutorials were incredibly helpful (make sure to go to the tutorials). Final was very fair and he allowed us a cheat sheet.
If you have the opportunity, take MATH 240 with this man. He is my goat.
You can't ask for a better professor. Lectures? Captivating. Tutorials and labs? Inspiring. Smile and aura? Wholesome.
Extremely fun assignments that let you apply lecture concepts in progressively complex questions
Amazing professor, tough class for sure, but taught well
Great intro to linear algebra, concepts explained clearly, and assignments give good practice
The GOAT 🐐 amazing prof and course, can't recommend enough, YES, YES, YES just take it, okay? Or regret your life choices if you don't
Best professor ever. I wish I had him for my MACM courses. He doesn't just spit out what's in his mind. He articulates the problem before teaching it and puts efforts in his notes. Yes his Notes, GOAT uses pen and paper to write clean, understandable and forever immortal notes
His lectures are very clear and the tests represent exactly what was taught
One of the best math professors.
one of the best math profs highly highly recommend him if you ever want a good grade in a math course!
One of my favourite profs at SFU. I love how he can simplify the most difficult concepts. It's very cool to learn Maple from him, since he was involved in its development. Reasonable workload for a 2-credit course.
Such a good professor. His lectures are extremely helpful as he doesn't use slides at all. Do all the assignments thoroughly and you will be all set to go, the exams are exact questions on assignments. No weekly quizzes either. If you are taking a calculus course take it with him!
I had to retake Calculus II because I received a D last semester. Professor Monagan is an amazing professor, and I couldn't recommend him enough. He is direct with what will be presented on the midterms and on the final, making it really easy to study for, and it's easy to achieve high grades. I ended this class with an A, all thanks to him.
