the hard but fair kind of person
real tough class the tests suck everyone failed nice guy just real hard
He is a wonderful teacher!! His tests are not that difficult, if you study, and know what you are doing!! He is always more than willing to help you understand!! My favorite teacher!!
Moran is very approachable and willing to help. His test are hard and you really need to know the material inorder to do well. Go see him if you need help!!!!
Dr. Moran is my favorite teacher. Yes, the tests were hard, but it's chemistry...what do you expect? However, he made everything as clear and as easy to understand as possible....best teacher I've ever had in science classes.
Very easy teacher, he's soooooooo slow though.
he really loves his job and anyone can tell. hes overanxious to help the students and makes it fun by always bringing in experiments to show the class to prove the reactions we are learning. its hard tho so get a tutor like dino!
My favorite science teacher, always willing to help, very nice guy, hard class but he makes it fun by bringing in experiments. I would absolutely recommend him!!!
Dr. Moran is a very nice professor. very helpful person. Highly recommended this teacher.
Great teacher. I recommend him to anyone who has to take Chemistry. Gives group quizzes and the tests arent bad if you're good w/ math. Answers any questions you have and goes over tests w/ the class. Overall amazing teacher!
I went to him during his office hours, but he does not do a good job of helping me with stuff I dont understand. Unlike the other rater, Moran is NOT overanxious to help out. BS! Also he doesn't seem to have any feelings. I would not reccomend him at all for lecture, only lab.
DONT listen to these other ppl. Theyre probably chem majors so of course they like him! First exam avg was a 60. exams are HARD. doesnt do a good job of prepin class for exam

He is hard, but good. He teaches well, but will turn around and include small things on the test. He gives great example problems in class and is worth taking if you're a chem major. He brings demos and examples to class to show you.
Favorite prof ever (I'm NOT a chem major!)He's very clear, took his CHE 103 class on a reccomendation & liked him so much took his CHE 104. I felt very prepared for the ACS standardized final ( by the way, use the ACS manual to prep for this, if you can get those problems u r in good shape) Also, he was very helpful in writing me reccomendations.
I love Dr. Moran! His class is pretty tough if you're not a science-oriented person, though he dropped lowest test grade. He's very nice & a great teacher, and can be really funny as well! I highly recommend him, just do all problems he gives for each chapter. I went from a 66 on 1st test to getting an A in the class!
My all-time favorite professor! He is clear, rigorous, emphasizes the math in chem. I was very happy to get him for 2nd semester. I felt well prepped for the ACS finals(by the way, use the prep book for this, you get those probs& you can do VERY well). Also, he's a regular guy, I respect him a lot as a person as well as a prof.
very good teacher ,but he dose not give you enough time in exams :(
awesome teacher. helps you out a lot. really cares about you. i had him in 103 and 104 and I couldn't have been happier with him. such a sweet guy.
very good teacher, does lots of demonstrations, but it can get boring sometimes, he will gladly explain any questions you may have, he assigns a lot of extra problems, but they help you out A LOT for tests.
clean guy...looks like freshman year....i couldn't understand what he was doing on the board...if i had to take his class over again i would sit in the front row and haunt him all semester...but i am not taking his class again.
This is a challenging class but Dr. Moran is extremely thorough in presenting material. He will explain the math behind the formulas. He is extremely helpful during office hours. The only thing bad I have to say is his tests are extremely dense and I need ample time and felt time stress. If you can handle time stress, take Dr. Moran, he's good.
The only professor who will tell you the three things you need to know to be a plumber!
He's such a nice guy who is always willing to help students. Plus he can be funny. He's a good teacher for hard material. One of the best I've had.
If chemistry is not one of your strong suits than I'd reccomend a tutor to manage in this class. But if chemistry comes easy to you than it shouldn't be that hard of a class for you.
disregard any comments that say he was good; that's why i took him for chem 2 and i don't know what they were talking about because he was TERRIBLE. he has NO IDEA how to teach. his class was one of the worst experiences of my life. i ended up failing it. almost half the class dropped out or failed. don't take him unless you're a chem genuis.
Moran is very good at explaining difficult concepts. He grades fairly, and is very willing to help on his own time. His class can be boring at times because he explains easy concepts in a detailed manner. Overall, I would take him again if i could.
Dr. Moran is a nice man and a wonderful teacher. He is kinda boring but is very intelligent. He is easy to talk to and very understanding.
This class was very hard. If you are not a science major then I would recommend that you take another class because he just expects too much.
Maybe the only viable option for gen chem teacher.
He is very good.
Awesome gen chem teacher. However, Townsend is easier. Dr. Moran covers the material and moves on while Dr Townsend goes over it and talks about it for a while. Dr. Moran's lectures are more "short, sweet, and to the point," while Townsend tends to "spoon-feed" you.
I had DR. Moran for 103, I wish i took him for 104. He was a great teacher and such a nice man. He helps you with anything, just get to know him. I had a tutor for this class and got an A easily.
MORAN IS THE MAN!!! I had him for 103, but not 104....mann did I miss him.
Moran is one of my favorite professors. He's is really funny but has dry humor which many people don't get. If you didn't have him for 103 taking him for 104 will be hard because he expects you to know the stuff from 103 and i'm not sure any other profs teach you enough.
Extrememly helpful teacher but this has pretty much shown me that chemistry is not a class to be taken over the summer unless you know exactly what you are doing. I know when i take the class in the fall i will go to him for help. He knows what he is doing he just taught extremely fast in the summer
I don't go to west chester, but I'm really impressed with Dr. Moran! I took chem 104 over the summer, and although he goes very fast, I felt the tests were fair, as well as his grading. I didn't have to study nearly as much as he implied was necessary, and have had no problem getting an A. If can handle chem 103, this will not be too hard!
Amazing guy, great teacher just have to ask the questions and not be chilled by his icy demeanor, make sure you understand your stuff and you'll do great, just ask all the questions you can when you get confused!
Very clear with the information. However, his tests are extremely unfair. 10 questions worth 10 a piece.... leaves NO room for error. Refuses to give bonus opportunities. His tests there were 1 or 2 questions he didn't even teach in class nor were there any practice problems similar.. That drops it down to an 80 with JUST those unfair ?s
Great quality. Very clear. No language barrier! Rigorous. Fast-paced. Hardest-working teacher I've had at WCU. Makes up all his own tests and quizzes (no multiple choice). Grades many assignments overnight. His tests, homework, and problem sets make you use your brain. Imagine that!
WORST PROF AT WCU never helped me when went to office hours 7 times and he didn't know how to do some owls and he picked them. he said "I don't know how to go about that."Take Townsend if you ae not good at chem because this prof could care less about those students. Worst Prof to teach chem.
One of the best professors I have had at WCU. He knows his stuff and is very clear in lectures. Makes his own tests, so there are no surprises. If you go to office hours, he will work with you until you know what you are doing.
Disciplined and intelligent. This man knows his material and expects you to learn it. Certainly one of the hardest courses and though it may be easier with Townsend Dr. Moran is the harder working.
Very hard course but great teacher. He explained everything with clarity and was very helpful when answering questions. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS! Tests are based off of in class/practice problems.
Very nice guy and cares about his students. he is always willing to help if you don't understand something, but his tests are VERY hard and are all short answer.
He does expect a lot from his students. He does really want you to learn about chemistry. His tests are difficult and you do need to make sure to prepare for them. But if you don't understand something, go to his office hours and he will help you for sure. He is really cool when you talk to him one on one. I'm taking him again next semester.
This professor is not easy, but a very good teacher. His notes are very clear- take all of them. He puts up practice problems so you know he cares. DO THEM! They are almost the same/VERY similar to the ones he puts on the exams. If you don't know something, go to his office hours! He may not seem approachable, but he's such a nice guy and helps out
CHE103 is a tough class, it helps to have a prior basic understanding of Chemistry like I did, a lot of the class was review. Dr. Moran is a good chemistry teacher and is accommodating with homework deadlines. He is not a very interactive teacher, do not expect to be called on for an answer during class, any questions he asks will be rhetorical.
Read this through! Dr. Moran is a great person and really knows his information when it comes to chemistry. However, his class is very difficult and unless you know your chemistry very well prior to his class or have a natural ability, expect to study extremely hard and at best get a C. At least a third of the kids in my class dropped his class.
Dr. Moran is a good teacher, but this class is not easy. I got a C on the first test, because I didn't do the practice problems in the textbook. AFter that I did the practice problems and got A's and high B's on the rest of the tests. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK. They are very hard, but very similar to what is on the exams!
Worst teacher I've ever had. He really was I am not kidding. He was not helpful at all and made you feel stupid if you asked a question. His online homework is graded for accuracy and all of the tests are open ended I am retaking CHE103 with dehm, who is very helpful and makes things very clear.
I do not know how people dislike this professor. Yes, his class is hard. But he basically sets you up to succeed. It's your choice if you want to do well. He holds reviews before exams, gives practice problems and is the most helpful professor during office hours. He seems intimidating, but very different during office hours. One of the best at WCU
It's in your best interest to not take this professor if your worried about your GPA. All his tests are open ended and more difficult than what should be expected from a general chemistry class. Nice person but so are most chemistry professors.
This man wants to fail his students. Do not take this class.
The pace was fast and the material was challenging. Dr. Moran tells you day one what you must do to succeed, if you do not do this, chances are you wont get an A. Extremely clear, and interesting lecturer, learned a ton during the 5 week session. Follow his advise and do the homework, success is not just handed to you.
Took him this summer which is a semester's worth of learningwork put into 5 wks... so it wasn't easy and I studied a lot. Lectures r boring & tests are fairly difficult (class avg usually 60-65%). He's helpful if you need him, puts up practice problems b4 tests, and theres homework per chapter. Good guy, tough course.
I took chem for nursing (the equivalent of 107) when I was a nursing major at a different school and made a 98 in the class. I had to withdraw from his course halfway through because I felt like I was "unlearning" what I had previously learned bc he was so confusing when explaining basic chem concepts. More than 12 my class withdrew.
Tough class, but Dr. Moran is very helpful in office hours. Class averages are always extremely low but he wants to see his students succeed so make sure you go to him if you're struggling!
I had Dr. Moran for CHE&CRL 103, 103, and Inorganic Chemistry. He is one of the best chemistry professors in the department. You must practice the problems in the back of the textbook, as his tests are very similar. There is no excuse to do poorly in his class because he is as clear as can be, and very willing to help. You need to put in effort.
Dr. Moran is the best! He writes notes on the chalk board, easy to follow, and he is always willing to answer questions. The only homework you have to deal with is online homework and it is simple. He gives occasional quizzes but tells you what you need to know for them. His tests are tough but if you take good notes and study, you will do well.
I had Moran for CRL103 lab and he was great. Always willing to help and gives clear instructions! Take him if you can!
Awesome professor, one of the best in the chemistry department. He explains the material really well. The tests were not too bad and the demonstrations in class were fun. I would definitely recommend this class and this professor.
Takes about 30 min every lab to explain the whole thing, so if you pay attention, you can get out pretty quickly. Never had a lab that took the whole time. He's a little condescending, but an easy grader when it comes to the lab reports.
Dr. Moran is one of the nicest professors around. He really wants you to succeed and is super helpful during office hours. He also answers emails in less than an hour. He doesn't use powerpoint, instead he writes on the chalk board, but CHE 104 is a lot of math so its actually super helpful. Tests are tough, but if you study you will be fine.
He is the best Chemistry professor I have ever had. He makes all of the material so clear and easy to understand. CHE104 is a hard class but he really helps.
He does not explain the material at all. Puts reactions on the board then does calculations without explaining anything that actually means something. The flow of his lectures is boring, long and drawn out. He has no personality. Doesnt give useful feedback on homework. Tests are rediculously long and dont reflect lectures. Dehm is 100% better!
His lectures are not indicative of the tests. The tests are incredibly long and difficult, and when you ask him for help he tells you to go do more practice problems (which don't help). He seems like a nice person but doesn't particularly care how his students do in class.
His lectures are not what his tests are like. Also even if the whole class fails an exam he will not curve it. He also does not drop your lowest grade or replace your lowest grade with your final exam grade if you did better on the final exam. Exams are extremely hard and unless you have taken the class before or have back tests your screwed
CHE 104 is a really tough class by itself. The professor generally will not matter for this course because it is difficult to teach. I had Moran for 103 as well as 104 and he is a great guy. He is always willing to help you out, tests are tough though. If you give it your all you will likely end up with a B.
My class was a 50 minute lecture at 10 am, 3 times a week. It is unusual for him to ever end class early, or to stop lecturing during those 50 minutes. Talks through the material, shows one example, and moves on. Good with answering questions, and genuinely cares about his students performance. Always willing to help or explain further.
Breezes through concepts (frequently going on tangents), does a single example, and moves on. Many times I would look down to write notes and look up and he is erasing something he just wrote, or has moved onto another concept. Reads problems from notebook, hardly explaining where he got numbers from. Get a tutor and read the book in conjunction.
Dr. Moran is a great teacher. If you want to succeed in this class you have to pay attention to lecture, do the homework, and go to him for help AS SOON as you don't understand something. Chemistry is a demanding subject but if you work hard, with this professor you will do well.
It is difficult to pass this class due to it being CHE104 but if you enjoy D2L notes to look at and using OWL homework then do not take him he only uses the chalk board. Subpar teaching at best. His homework assignments are take home but even using the notes you will probably be confused. The tests usually cover way more than what he teaches.
Biggest mistake picking him for this course. I went on rate my professor and saw his reviews werent horrible but let me tell you he is awful. He speaks nonstop without pauses, has no slides its all on chalkboard and he moves insanely fast. His tests are impossible and he doesnt do practice problems like the ones on the exams.
This professor has pretty good reviews fro his chem 104 class. However, upon taking the class, I gathered that his lectures did not help me, I constantly needed the internet for help, and his homework/practice problems did not come with detailed answers. If you want to actually learn chem 104 content, find a different professor.
He is a sweetheart and truly just adorable overall. You can tell he cares and loves science. That being said he moves at a lightning fast pace and can be hard to understand sometimes. I dont think he curves at all so good luck. But he is kind just get a tutor. Overall good guy just not the best at comprehensive teaching.
Moran is a very nice professor. However, his grading seems unfair. Tests are very tough and he refuses to curve them at all. I consistently got D+'s and C's on his tests but received an A- on the ACS final. He moves very quickly in lectures so make sure you come to class and take really good notes.
It's lab so you obviously have to go. Dr. Moran is super helpful during labs, you don't understand? Just ask. He is always willing to explain in detail and help you. He seems to understand not everyone is a chemistry genius and treats the class in that manner. Beware though, he doesn't speak very loud so pay close attention as he speaks.
You can tell that he's very passionate about science, but with that being said he's probably a better professor for students that have a good understanding of chemistry. He moves pretty fast in his lectures, but he's always willing to explain something further if need be. Gives few homework assignments which may help or hurt you.
Moran is a very difficult professor, if I did not have prior knowledge of chemistry I would be failing in the class. It is extremely difficult and he does not curve grades. The class averages on tests were 50% or less. Study hard!!
This professor is too smart to be teaching an entry level chemistry coarse. He treats his class as if the students are all graduate chemistry students. Gives no extra credit and he gives a only a few homework assignments worth an absured amount of points and grades them with the excessive scrutiny. His lectures are the dry and very boring.
was in an honors chem class in HS, got As every marking period, and 91 on the final, did better than most people. coming into this class, did fine on the homework assignments, then first exam...41%. if you take this professor you HAVE to teach yourself the material. good character, not the best teaching style. if you take him, get the access code
I don't even know where to begin. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. Chemistry is taxing enough as it is let alone with someone that doesn't teach the material. He flies through the information, doesn't explain/answer questions well and his exams are extremely long and difficult. TAKE FROST!!!
He is a good professor because he knows what he's doing but he can't teach it well. He only does 1-2 examples and then moves on. Has an irrational amount of stuff expected to be memorized for exams. Does not give enough time on exam.
class average was a 55% on the FIRST test. Every class consists of many different topics being covered and about 1 or 2 examples for each. Flies through the material and makes tests cover so much it makes it super difficult to study. This is only an intro class also. IF YOU CAN AVOID IT DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Moran does teach very fast. But if you read the book along with his lessons and do practice problems on your own you will probably do okay. Get a tutor of you have his chem 103 class, that helped me a lot. Moran is very nice and is always willing to help the class when there is questions so don't be afraid to ask!
This class is hard and while Moran is a tough professor, he really care about his students and hes really helpful at his office hours. His lectures are fast paced but thats because they have to be- the whole class is taught around the ACS final which includes a lot of material. Read the text book and do practice problems and youll be fine.
Lecture exam averages: 1st: 55, 2nd: 63, 3rd: 68. He explicitly states that he won't curve and he did not curve at the end of the semester. Lectures are on chalkboard. He provides practice problems which are good practice. Tests were very in depth and there was lots of studying required in this class.
Dr. Moran is 100% top notch. He is an expert as a scientist and a professor. I had him for CHE 105-106, which were advanced level general chemistry classes, and he was clearly the master of the material. He was accessible, caring, and understanding, and it was both a pleasure and a privilege to be among his students.
Dr. Moran is an expert in the field who makes the advanced material accessible. With his caring approach and helpful study tools like Unstuck AI, acing this class is very achievable.
