very fair, expects personal responsibility
No Comments
AMAZING PROF! absolutely loved him. expects students to do the work and take responsibility for themselves, teaches a lot about life this way... as well as the political philosophers
Very little background info given to place political documents/ideologies in context. Still too concerned with being cool to realize his potential.
This class was a joke.... he gives all the information you need to take the tests online. All you have to do is use the notes to define the terms from each "module". Cake
He Gives You all the Info. For the test... Just study and you should be fine
he makes the tests seem easy....you prepare using the study guide and then he kills you on the grading....he needed a 15 point curve on the first test to make the class average a 74!!!
Good guy I liked him. All the info is given to you... Just gotta study defly dont have to read
Doesn't take job seriously, horrible professor who grades ridic. I would advise you to take another class; he doesn't want to be there and you won't want to be either.
you don't have to read the books! just make sure you get the notes somehow (you don't even have to go to class) and study a lot before the exams.
Easy to understand and questions on tests are taken right from lecture notes
Lectures are somehow easy to understand, and you don't have to read.So far so good, until you get your first grade. It's gonna seem unfair but it's the truth he grades extremely harsh and it's not even him most of the time, his TAs are usually the ones who grade the tests and papers. Good class for learning, horrible class if you care about your gpa.
pretty easy, go to class, or get the notes and the exams are basically from that. very flexible with help. not to bad.
Horrible Professor! So boring, and the MOST un-helpful professor I have ever encountered! Exams are impossible! Some questions are from lecture outlines, but when you have 250 questions on the final review packet, you lose your mind! The "short paper" is useless, and will bring down your grade! Cut your hair! AVOID HIM!
very boring and unclear at times. i was taking 4 200level classes and his class was by far the hardest. not because the workload was hard but b/c he made things complicated and he delegates everything to his TA's. the worst is asking for help or disputing a grade. it is a waste cause all he will say is that "you should have paid attention"
At first I thought he was a doofus and did not like the class at all. Then he kind of grew on me. He thoroughly explains each of the books in lecture, so if you take good notes, you're golden. You don't have to even read any of the books to get an A. Just make sure you study the class notes a lot before the exams (there are only 2 exams).
Morrell is a very good professor. I am not a poly sci major but interested in the subject. He gives two exams and a short paper, so the workload is not a lot at all. Everything needed for the exams was given out in lectures. All you need to do is show up, pay attention, and take notes and you'll be fine. No need to buy books, they're online.
Overall a pretty good Professor. He was funny, clear, and his class was not very difficult. The exams are based entirely on the lecture notes, so as long as you have all the notes from the year and study them you will have no problem getting a good grade.
he's relatively interesting and his exams are off the slides/lectures he gives in class. it's necessary to go because he doesn't post slides online. if you memorize all the information from his lectures, the exams aren't too difficult and it's not necessary to do any of the reading.
Interesting but difficult. He really makes you think but if you keep up with the readings than you should do fine.
As long as you go to class semi-regularly and invest a little time into the papers, then this class is totally worth it. Comes off a tad pretentious but I never had a problem with him because I didn't have any 1-on-1 interaction (though he is very accessible). SO REASONABLE with grades too so there's no reason to do poorly. FOR SURE RECOMMENDED!!
Morrell is very knowledgeable. Information from his tests are right off the slides and test questions are straight-forward. Easy grader. As long as you do the work and go to class (to get info from the slides) you should be alright.
I took his winter inter-session course, so it is a little different. We had to write short essay responses for the exam but over all it was very easy. He is fair, clear, interesting and and easy grader. As long as you study the slides and know the material from the books you will be fine.
I loved his class! As long as you do the study guides and go to lecture (or at least get the lecture notes) the tests aren't hard. The quizzes are all based on the study guides. The work load isn't bad at all. He responds to emails quickly.
Morrell is a pretty decent teacher. He makes the class easy and interesting. The grade is based on two exams, a paper, and a bunch of quizzes. He drops the lowest 4-5 quiz grades, so even if you bomb a few, it won't hurt you. Overall, he's a good professor to have.
Morrell is a good professor. He likes when you engage in the lecture so you can't be on the internet or phone. He often calls out people for doing things other than taking notes in class.I thought his class was pretty easy but attendance is mandatory; mostly because of the book quizzes and notes which are not posted online. Test were long but easy.
LOVE this professor! He is so clear in his lectures and time flies by. You do have to do the readings because their are quizzes every week on them but if you read the study guide, you will ace them. Easy midterm and final. One essay that was super interesting to write. Best!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! He is such a great professor and very easy to approach. His lectures can be boring at times, but it's so clear and easy to understand. Theres weekly quizzes so keeping up with the readings is an absolute must. Although, spark notes are helpful too. But reading the book and doing the study guides, you'll easily pass.
Definitely a good class. Quizzes you on readings, but clarifies them in lectures. Somewhat tough, but fair exams. Only two papers for the whole year. He has a great sense of humor and makes class interesting. Just don't let him catch you on facebook.
Great professor that actually knows how to teach. He's a very engaging lecturer that makes boring topics bearable. Lots of reading and quizzes, but doable. Gives study guides for everything and is very clear with expectations and requirements. Just beware that he calls on random people in lecture and will call you out for not paying attention.
Great professor. GO TO CLASS. He gave the few of us who came to class the day before Spring Break 10 bonus points just for showing up. Makes what could be a very dry, boring subject interesting (and I'm a biology major, so POLS isn't really my thing). Very funny and wants you to participate, he'll call you out if you don't pay attention!
Morrell was a good professor overall, but did have pop quizzes on the readings every now and then which can catch you off guard especially if you had an engaging schedule like mine.
Lectures are long and dry for students who aren't political science majors. Morrell does try to keep things entertaining though.
Many specific quizzes on readings, won't pass if you just use spark notes.
Very fair about quizzes, lectures tend to be interesting and I highly suggest attendance. However, be prepped to do a lot of reading.
The class was fine, but it was my least favorite class this semester. Quizzes get more difficult as the semester goes. The paper is graded hard, and you need to really study for exams. Exams had multiple choice, short answer, and a longer essay question. Calls on random people in lecture to answer questions and will embarrass you.
Morrell is very easy regarding quizzes he drops your lowest five or six grades and the answers are on the study guide or if you skimmed the reading. Exams are not difficult if you study and I wrote the only paper the day before it was due and got a 96. He is very caring and I highly recommend taking this class for a content area.
This was actually not a bad class at all. He drops probably 5-6 quizzes and they're 5 questions each with a bonus that can usually only be found from the reading. All the readings can be easily spark noted. Pretty straight forward for the most part. Don't use your phone in class HE WILL CALL YOU OUT. Paper is an easy grade booster.
There are simple quizzes on the readings. You can prepare by reading SparkNotes. He tends to give out extra points and is willing to drop low grades. He presents all the information that you need to know clearly in his power points. So, I would recommend going to class. There are detailed study guides online to help you prepare for exams.
Class will be easy if you go to it diligently. Everything you need to know are in his lectures, which are usually interesting and easy to understand. There are a lot of readings and there are a lot of quizzes on them, but most can be found on sparknotes. If you go to class, pay attention, and read the sparknotes you'll be all set.
Lots of note taking but Morrell makes the topics seem pretty interesting. There are reading quizzes but you can almost always get a 100 even if you just SparkNote it. Overall a very funny guy and a pretty easy class if you pay attention and take good notes.
I'm a Poli Sci major and this might be the hardest intro level Poli Sci course I've ever taken. Reading was heavy but if you do them on time, you'll be fine on quizzes and exams. The content might be boring to non-poli sci major students however he tried to make them more interesting, that was good. The short paper can be used to boost your grade.
Overall, he is a pretty good prof. He likes to use a lot of personal stories during lectures which helps as the content could be pretty boring at time
Many people think this is an easy A, but it isn't. Readings can be tricky and doing the reading guides does not guarantee a 100 on the 5 question quizzes. Have to go to class b/c he doesn't post slides and you have to take notes on what he says. Has great energy and makes a boring subject more bearable. Midterm/final have short answer and essay.
Nice guy, and answers email when there's an issue. But, there's always one section on each test worth 90 pts and there's a lot of unlcear guidelines for assignments. One paper has a 6-page assignment sheet. You're fine if you do the readings.
Professor Morrell is an excellent lecturer who always makes his slides and class time interesting. This class definitely requires reading, but the discussion sections are helpful. If you are looking for an easy gen ed or do not like to read and write, do not take this class. If you have an actual interest in the topics, you'll learn a lot.
Powerpoint info is super important on the test so you NEED to go to lecture if you want to pass this class. You don't really have to read the books as long as you take good notes in class. Morrell doesn't grade anything himself so your grade pretty much relies on your TA.
At first, I really loved Professor Morrell. But, as the semester went on, I couldn't stand him anymore. His expectations become increasingly unclear as the semester goes on. He gives you a 6 page requirement outline for a "short paper". Once we turned over to online, it got worse. He expects a lot for a Gen Ed, at least this semester
Prof Morrell is passionate about poly sci, but this class was just ehh. The quizzes are pretty easy. The readings aren't necessary, just spark note it. The lectures kinda fly by, but the content isn't that interesting.
I feel that the way a professor handles the swap to online classes due to COVID-19 truly speaks to how they are as a teacher. Morrell not only quadrupled work load but became increasingly unrealistic and strict as the online portion continued. He became the biggest stress in my life and I lost respect for him. He was not accommodating nor clear.
I liked him at the beginning of the semester, but once we got to the end of the semester (online due to COVID-19), he changed so many things so many times. He's not very flexible and NOT CLEAR when it comes to grading (especially the paper). Maybe it was due to the class being online part way through, idk. He goes fast during lecture too. good luck
Morrell, is a good teacher, when he teaches. Wastes hour of class on peer discussion, where almost no one understands the reading. Switched to online classes and was still a bit of a hardo (requiring monitored final exam). Powerpoints posted are vague. Exams are very long and tedious. If you truly enjoy theory take, if you need to fill a req, AVOID
I took his POLS 3012 class completely online and he was one of the best and most fair professors I've had at UConn. For this class, you have optional quizzes and all readings are found for free online. There are two exams for which he holds study sessions. Very fair, caring, humble professor. 10/10 recommend. Content is also super interesting!
Its baffling how a professor can not adjust during the pandemic to suit the needs of his students. He has ridiculously short time limited quizzes along with a lot of reading and two part tests. Worst professor I have ever had.
I love Prof Morrell!! I took his 1002 class before choosing to take this one, course material is very similar (almost identical) so if you did well in 1002 and are looking for an additional easy class I'd recommend this one. Extensive reading and weekly quizzes, online class is difficult to use notes bc it is timed to mock a clicker quiz.
I took his class online and his lectures were a bit boring. This class also involves extensive long and intricate reading accompanied with very short 5 min quizzes. Throughout all the 5 min quizzes you have to rush to finish and he was not flexible with extending the time. Overall, this class is not terrible but just annoying.
This class is very content heavy and you won't enjoy it if you aren't interested in it, but he does make that very clear in the syllabus. You will need to do some of the readings as only some of them have good sparknotes. Discussion section is mandatory but I took the class as distance learning and the lectures weren't fully necessary. Funny guy.
The midterm and final, reading assessments, and one short paper are annoying, and you absolutely must go to every lecture and take detailed notes to do well on the midterm and final. This class was not impossibly hard, though, you just need to put some work into it.
This class was a decent amount of work, but Professor Morrell is definitely reasonable and a good professor. Lectures are mandatory and you have to take good notes since a lot of midterm and final questions are based on it. Assignments are straightforward and the reading quizzes each week aren't terrible. Overall great professor!
Overall Professor Morell was a very good instructor in class. However, he may have assigned the most tedious and ridiculous take-home final exam in the history of humanity. the class is good but I wouldn't take it again due to the final alone.
The lectures in this class were very useful and he posts them online, but this course is VERY reading heavy. He also focuses almost completely on white men in political theory even though from what I hear from other pols students the other profs for this class go over a range. It makes the class feel very one sided.
This class is great for anyone who has too much free time and would love to stop having too much free time. There's lots of reading and quizzes, and heavy preparation is necessary to do well on the tests. The lectures were interesting, but he'll go pretty fast, and he doesn't seem to care that students have other classes to worry about besides his.
Very interesting lectures, he really cares about making the lectures clear. Lots of reading though, a bunch of online quizzes, and an absurd grading system. He basically makes it impossible to get a 100 on the exam.
Can't fault Professor Morrell as a person or a lecturer. Very knowledgeable and tried to make the lectures interesting. Reading assignments can be classed as 'busy work' but you don't have to do them all so it balances out. Exams are way too complicated for no apparent reason. You end up getting tested over 6-7 specific topics out of dozens
He is a nice guy, no serious complaints. There are a lot of reading assessments (quizzes on the reading) but you only have to do some of them. Reading heavy class but I went without reading most of the books and also found them online for free. The tests are hard, written and MC, but did well as long as I studied and went to discussion.
This was a very difficult course. I did not find trouble with the reading assignments because you can find the information on quizlet. The midterm and final are insane. You are tested on a ton of material and there are many requirements in order to receive a good grade. Insanely hard course for a gen ed class. NOT EASY TOO HARD
Morrell was interesting but his points system is wack--hard to fail, hard to get an A. SO much reading--would have dropped class if I couldn't do well just by skimming during open-book quizzes. Exams basically require memorizing every little detail to get an A. Loved what I learned in the class but wish I took it with someone else.
This class was very interesting and he is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. Reading heavy but if you take good notes and look on quizlet the class is very easy to pass. I was going to drop this class when I saw how much reading it was but it ended up being my favorite class.
*Took him for 3025 Took a class with him last year, loved it. Took this one and my god what a regret. He does not know how to efficiently run a class discussion. He assigns absurdly long readings. The final essay in the class is going to be 100+ Pages!! It is absurd, if you think this will be easy, do not take it. Be prepared to write a book.
I honestly enjoyed Professor Morrell's class for most of the semester. Lectures are not mandatory and he is a great guy. Also the reading assessments are easy to find on Quizlet. My one real complaint is that his exams are absurd. 17 paragraphs and 30 multiple choice for the final is absolute madness, and he expects you memorize everything.
Michael Morrell is probably the worst professor you could take, he will talk down to women and POC in class. Expects that you do all of his weekly quizzes, coding and group paper by ridiculous deadlines. Is not understanding at ALL, will not give extensions at all.
Morrell gets a bad rep in some cases, but this year he has completely redone the course and now I couldn't recommend more. He is very accessible and cares, records all lectures, and gives study guides that genuinely tell you what is on the exam. The TAs are great and there are so many ways to get points and a good grade.
POLS 3025 was probably the worst class I've ever taken. Professor Morrell has a clear lack of respect towards women and POC. He belittles his students making them feel less than, is not willing to listen to anyone. Class has a large group project and coding. Outrageous deadlines and amount of readings. Will bring students to tears.
You dont have to use textbooks but the class was very easy imo
Political theory is incredibly boring and confusing, but Prof. Morrell does a fantastic job simplifying the content. Exams are based on lecture content and he lets you know what he expects so they are fairly easy. The only thing that is annoying are the reading assessments you have about every theorist, but you can look up the answers oftentimes.
People made this class seem a lot tougher than it was!!!!! Do the assignments and readings, and take notes during the lectures and you'll understand everything you need to know for the class. Professor Morrell does a lot to ensure the class is as fair as possible.
Most of the material you need for exams are covered in lectures, but he also posts lecture online if you can't make it to class. Material is pretty easy, with short hw assignments. He drops a bunch of grades and is pretty lenient. The only thing to beware of is the exams. There are only two and they require a lot of memorization.
Assignments were always clear and understandable. He gives a short list of possible exam questions, with all exam questions coming from that list verbatim. His lectures are clear and can be used as an outline for the exam questions. He also records and posts all lectures on HuskyCT in full. Overall a fantastic class for a gen-ed or elective.
There is a lot of reading but pretty much all of it is covered in lectures, lectures are posted on HuskyCT, there are two major exams which require a lot of memorization but potential exam questions are also posted on HuskyCT, offers study guides for exams and extra credit which are very helpful, overall this class is easy to get an A in
His class was very interesting, with many stories, and I enjoyed the class stretch. I loved the class, but I hated the point-based grading system, which made your grade make or break with the final. Gave a study guide for the tests, so it was easy but still frustrating grade calculation-wise. Recommend the class out of this grading system. Fun disc
Absolutely loved this class! Makes it very interactive and clear. Posts recordings of the lectures after class. Weekly readings and reading assignments, but he specifically picks sections of the books for you to read. Very easy to understand the class and what needed to be completed.
at first, i was terrified of the class because of the reviews, but it wasn't as bad as i thought. it's lecture-heavy, so paying attention is key. i used chatgpt for all the reading assessments and still got an A. the professor gives potential questions for the midterm and final; also the TA grades everything, so try to stay in their good books.
Unlike past ratings, Morrell is an amazing professor. He has redone this course over the years, which has made it better. Lectures were very well organized, which made note taking easy. If you fill out his study guides and put in the work, you'll get an A. Discussion sessions were kind of useless imo, but attendance is graded.
LOVE this professor. He was super cool and super passionate. Was very good at teaching Political theory and seemed to really care about it. The final and midterm were definitely difficult to study for, but he gives you study guides that have all of the exam essay questions, making the actual exam (if you study) VERY easy.
Lots of reading, important to attend lectures to take notes and understand. That said, I was pleased with Professor Morrell and I think he is a great professor who is passionate. Some concepts are difficult to understand and others aren't the most interesting. He is very systematic and relies on the syllabus to guide the class meticulously.
He is not a good professor. He never actually taught us and never had a clear lecture, he left my class multiple times to go smoke but our attendance was always mandatory. Very harsh grader and the course is very reading heavy. Not a very nice guy. Definitely would not recommend to anyone.
Very nice; it made the class very easy and structured, just like a 1000-level class. Wasn't difficult for no reason.
He records all his lectures. Only 2 exams and a group project + weekly readings and mini quizzes on the reading. Everything is super easy, the concepts can just get tricky since you're talking about philosophers. This is a very manageable class and I would take it for easy credit.
an extremely difficult course for an intro class. you almost need to have a photographic memory for a perfect score on the exams. the professor is a very good lecturer, although he tends to be condescending when interacting with students. it's difficult but passable if you apply yourself. he also records all lectures which helps.
Professor Morrell is extremely clear about his expectations and how to succeed in his class. If you attend the lectures and listen in this class an A is extremely attainable. Definitely knowledgeable on political theory, his lectures are very informative and the TAs are fantastic. I would highly recommend this class and enjoy going each week.
He is nice, he knows what he's talking about and records all lectures. There are 2 exams and a political theory exercise. Though, you need to really study the content in depth or have good memory for this course as the key ideas for the political theorists can get confusing and during exams there's a large writing portion, and no notes are allowed.
He's good. Majority of grade is midterm, final, and “applying political theory” which is just another exam. Very tough on grading, will take points off over small things because “no one is perfect” but the TAs are usually understanding. Records lectures and gives break time in class. Good intro class if poli-sci major.
Professor Morrell is a great lecturer and his class was interesting. He is clearly passionate about the subject matter and cares about students' learning experiences. Weekly reading quizzes are online and unmoderated, so there is always consistent, easy credit to be had. Study guides are a huge help for the exams/papers, and he provides them.
Very straightforward class. A lot of reading regarding political theorists, but extremely interesting stuff. Applying these theories to the real world in discussions was highly engaging. Prof. Morrell is an extremely skilled lecturer and definitely cares about his students. Exams are easy if you study and go to lectures/watch them. Take this class!
Amazing professor, nothing else to say tbh, he was awesome
