Attendance is not mandatory but YOU WILL WANT TO GO EVERY TIME. He's seriously seriously so awesome and after class with him I feel like my soul has just been hugged by a rock star. The homework and projects are extremely manageable and if you're stressed just talk to him and he'll help you figure stuff out. He's like a cool adult friend!!!

Great Theo teacher! Easy to get an A, just read the books. His midterm and final were just definitions and short essay/answer but no multiple choice. You watch a lot of short films/videos. I took the 2 1/2 hr long class, which gets boring sometimes. He's very nice and understanding. 1 essay & 1 précis. 2 written assigns. & field work.

He's a really good teacher. The class is interesting but gets boring when your sitting in the class for a long time (which can happen for any class). He's very understanding and the work is manageable. Only thing, he loves english/lit so he's kind of picky on grammar..other than that, i recommend him for THEO 100 or intro to christian marriage.

Honestly I wouldn't buy the books. We sometimes read aloud a few paragraphs in class but he doesn't care if you don't have the book on you. You need it to write your precis so I'd check the library to check-it out for a bit.Exams are definitions which I googled and got an A on each one. It's easy, be there, semi-pay attention & do the written work.

Very very low work load for this class. But this class is not a blow-off as far as your grade. On midterm: 12 A's, 20 B's, 12 C's. He definitely doesn't just hand out A's on your work, if its not excellent your get B/B+. Rarely will give a 100% on a writing assignment. It was more difficult than I thought to get an A in this class. Great guy tho.

Dr. Murphy is a great guy. But, for someone lookin to get a solid A in this class not an A-, his class is a nail-biter. It seems like no matter how much/little work you put into your assignments he will ALWAYS give you between a 90-94. But an A is 94. He simply does not believe in perfection and views an A- the same as an A. Other than that great.

If you're willing to deal with some problematic takes from this professor in exchange for canceling class an ungodly amount of times, no exams, and easy grading, great. However, if I had a dime for every time he said "Not to evangelize" and then launched into evangelizing, I'd be rich. Yes, we're at a Catholic school, but no, I will not convert.

Don't take Dr. Murphy if you want to keep your sanity.e's super disorganized and has changed the syllabus ~4x. He also makes the students teach the class with 50 min presentations. He has no respect for students' time and consistently holds class over by several minutes. BUT, the class is super easy if you can deal with his boomer takes for a sem.

Very mid class, especially if you aren't religious. Worth it for J-term because I wouldn't want to take this class for a whole semester. It's not hard though, sometimes I just felt like I was writing what he wanted to hear instead of what I actually believed or thought. Easy exams, fair to easy grader, plenty of opportunity for extra credit. Asych.

Dr. Murphy is a KING! I had him for HONR D102 and he was an amazing professor. He is the most easy-going, easy-grading, understanding, and caring professor I have ever had. Every student has to give a presentation in the class to get a good participation grade. He cancels class sometimes and holds it online. Phenomenal Professor. 300/10 TAKE HIM!

I was a bit nervous for this class because I generally do not enjoy Theo classes, but Murphy made this class a lot of fun. He is a very understanding professor and quite funny. While this class is theological, Murphy focuses on general important life topics so it did not feel preachy. Overall an amazing professor

I don't know how to feel about Michael. He has opportunities for extra credit but it only went towards your participation grade. He was a weird grader for essays too. There was no rhyme or reason for his grading and he was quite rude if you questioned it. He was generous for the co-curriculars, I think he automatically gave everyone a 98% on them.

While Professor Murphy is a nice and lighthearted, his teaching style was not ideal. His expectations can be unclear and he often does not give helpful feedback. For a discussion based class he encouraged student-led discussions which was nice but was sometimes almost a little bit too laid back and sometimes seemed unprepared.

This class was simply a colossal waste of time and effort... I would have liked to learn something while in it. This course is an afterthought for the instructor, as he forgot about it until the last minute (just prior to the start date). Erratic grading, aimless lectures with little substance, and information that doesn't check out when reviewed.

This class was so poorly organized. The lectures were unclear and lacked any academic substance. Murphy relied heavily on vague presentations done by groups on broad topics. Despite being called Christian Marriage, the class pushed Catholic ideals and definitely an abstinence agenda in readings as well. Be warned.

Heavy readings, didn't do any and still succeeded. Lectures are all over the place, didn't learn much from those. Goes on tangents, but at least they're interesting. Group project is pretty vague but doable. I'm not religious at all and had to take this course, so at least it was easy for me.

The reviewer hasn't experienced such a poorly-conducted course in the past and fortunately will likely never have the same displeasure again. There is approximately a quarter of a class when all is said and done... Several dates were cancelled, which is a rarity at Loyola, and group presentations (dreadful in nature) eat up around eleven sessions.

The class content isn't bad but the class structure is very disorganized. I took it over JTerm and I couldn't imagine sitting through a WHOLE semester. Lectures feel all over the place (some of the stuff is not relevant at all). He randomly changes deadlines which makes it hard to plan. Midterm/Forum posts are easy if you've been keeping up.

I did not enjoy prof. Murphy's class for personal reasons. He is a tough grader but the assignments aren't very difficult. He travels often so class is cancelled frequently, sometimes leaves assignments for those days. There is a group project for the semester + a few essays. Definitely would recommend to those who are interested/major in THEO.

I have nothing bad to say about m murphy. He's an amazing professor and person. He understands that life gets hard and truly cares about each person. He made a really inclusive environment for everyone and encouraged us all to be friends. Class didn't even feel like work but instead was just enjoyable to be a part of.

I took Murphy for ENGL 273 the same semester, he is so caring about the topics and genuinely wants students to understand significance of the material. Super funny and engaging during lectures, although it is difficult to take notes sometimes. Doing the readings helps a lot, he prepares you for tests well and doesn't assign a ton of homework.

Dr. Murphy has been one of my favorite professors at Loyola! Super funny/engaging and really passionate about what he is teaching! Big group project and a lot of smaller projects that I honestly had fun doing! I would definitely take him again, such a great option for a tier 2 theology!

Professor Murphy was a fabulous professor. I enjoyed coming to classes as he was very entertaining and enthusiastic about the material he taught. The class requires a lot of textual reading, and all the assignments are assigned in a manner where due dates are all posted in advance! The professor is very helpful if you have any questions!

Overall, enjoyed the class. The assignments you do are, 1 Precis (quick 100 word summary of a chapter your assigned), Midterm, Two discussion questions (200 words) due a month apart, a big group presentation(sorta dreadful but its fine) Forum post, Dealers choice, and a paper/podcast. Take this class if you need your teir 2 theo credit done.

He is the nicest man ever. I love Dr Murphy. I took this class to fulfill my engaged learning and it is so easy. The first half of the year we talked a lot about jesuits and ignatian things, pretty boring to me as I am not religious but it was interesting. The second half is a lot more participation and we have a speech. Easy A if you want.

Was this class easy? Yes. But be warned. He wants this class to practically be a seminar. If you're someone who could care less about Christianity, I would be slightly hesitant taking this class- if you don't want to be scolded like a little kid for not really interacting in class. SO MUCH BUSY WORK - it was like we were in high school again.

I am not religious at all, he is super caring of everyone and is not going to try to convince you of one thing or another. Things seem very overwhelming at first, but it is relatively easy. He loves if you relate things back to your family/do interviews with family/talk about personal experiences. Go to class and stay kinda engaged - no laptops

Was never bored during lecture, but the classwork for this class is a bit crazy if you are busy with other classes. Some of the other reviews went into it, but the class is like a seminar. If you're more introverted, or have severe social anxiety, you shouldn't take this class unless ur willing to experiment a little. He's chill, but expect work.

Decent THEO core class but an incredibly busy one. Prepare to dedicate a lot of time as he assigns a big group project, writing-based tests, a Dealer's Choice assignment, and a final essay. Class is a chore if you're quiet/shy, but put in the effort and Murphy will notice and give you props. Very nice guy despite appearing intimidating at first.

I don't know why the "would take again" isn't 100%. Not only is Prof. Muprhy super sweet, he also offers extra credit, enjoys getting to know you, and no final (it's a brunch!) Skim over the readings he gives, study for the legit 1 test you have, come and talk in class, and you'll love it. Small class, easy to be comfortable in, and he's awesome.
