Ng's class is easy, you don't really have to do any of the reading. he is annoying but a nice guy. Nothing special, but might bore you a bit.
He's the new guy. First impressions on day 1 made him look strict and humorless but he is actually VERY nice, and VERY helpful. There some reading, none of which I have done (books cost $$$) or needed to do well on his quizes. Be prepared to write many short essays for all tests, quizes and the final essay (LONG one)
He is very knowledgable in his subject although he is a very boring speaker! He is very helpful during office hours. The class itself is easy, but he grades pretty hard.
He was extremely knowledgeable and had fascinating lectures if you stayed attentive. He was very helpful, and if you participated often, he liked you a lot more. He graded pretty harshly, but I worked harder as a result.
Extremely knowledgeable and seriously knows his stuff. He grades pretty harshly on papers and quiz responses, but he will always make an effort to help you if you ask. The lectures are informative and interesting, much better than I had ever expected coming into an ancient history class
He is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the subject, which helps a lot. I don't really like history, but I enjoyed going to his class. He keeps you engaged, and he grades fairly on tests and quizzes. Papers he grades harshly on but makes himself available for help if you need it. He's pretty great!
One of the most demanding classes I've ever taken. Ng (pronounced Ing) expects a high level of participation. You must be able to support your opinions with facts, which is extremely refreshing. Knows his stuff. I would recommend it if you actually want a challenge and to learn at university
Professor Ng is very bright and knows what he's talking about. However, he is awkward and seems unapproachable. He comes across as arrogant and expects you to know what he's talking about. His expectations seem unreasonably strict and his assignments are somewhat vague. Expect A LOT of reading for this class. He also grades quite harshly.
I loved Prof. Ng! I had him for a UCOR 1400, and it was an amazing class. He at first comes off as a little intimidating but you quickly realize that he is very kind and cares about every student's wellbeing and success in his class. His lectures were amazing, very engaging, with some reading every night, quizzes, and papers, along with a final.
Took his UCOR course on Empire. He gave amazing lectures and you could tell he cared about the material. Did do quite a bit of reading during the quarter. Participation is key as that counts for a good portion of the grade. Does provide good feedback on essays to help improve your writing. Would not hesitate to take another one of his courses.
Seems intimidating at first but then you get to know him and he's actually really understanding and helpful. Really bright, great, interesting lectures, very funny and sarcastic. Is really cool with adjusting the deadlines as long as you're a good class overall. Gives good feedbacks on the essays so use the office hours.
Dr. Ng will make you work for your grade, but he does not make it impossible. Participate in the lectures, get feedback on your essay, and study for the quizzes. Don't miss class unless it's unavoidable. If you're taking honors, your oral exam will be hard, but if you know what you are talking about you will be fine. He is a tough but fair grader.
Dr. Ng is hilarious and I love his guest speakers: his kid and his dog. As for his class, he assigns long papers but as long as you start early it shouldnt hurt, always make sure to participate in class for participation points and if not post in the discussion boards (although imo the discussion boards are way more difficult.)
As a person, I loved Dr. Ng. He is super nice and accommodating, especially given the circumstances. But if you do not immediately understand the material, it's difficult to get anywhere in the class. I felt that his feedback lacked and did not tell me how to improve on essays, on top of there only being like 6 grades total. Idk how I got a B- tbh.
Does not use Canvas at all so your grade is only available when posted to your transcript. Has an immense amount of reading and since he is an HNR professor he grades regular courses with the same mindset. Blunt with feedback but offers more insight outside of class. Definitely not an easy class but he is a relatable kind person.
I loved Dr. Ngs class! As long as you stay on top of the reading and take notes on his lectures you'll do fine! Its super important to GO TO OFFICE HOURS. I promise if you go he will help you with anything you need and your grade will be much better than if you dont. Also, he can tell if your trying or not. Make sure to participate!
Ng is a really nice guy and he is very passionate about history. With that being said, you can't fake it in this class, you have to know exactly what you're talking about. He assigns a lot of homework and expects you to do it all. Participation is also really key. Also can be kind of intimidating so it can be scary to go to office hours.
Dr. Ng is my emotional support professor. His office hours are very helpful and sometimes he has class outings or brings his dogs which is the best!! This class is tons of reading, and his canvas can be difficult to navigate, but once you get in the flow its pretty reasonable.
Dr. Ng is absolutely fantastic. His lectures are engaging and informative. Dr. Ng interacts with his students and makes sure they understand concepts and ideas. He builds time into the lectures for questions and is extremely accessible. He is excellent with communication and gives wonderful feedback.
Dr. Ng is intimidating but secretly super chill. He clearly cares about his students and I would take him again in a heartbeat! Don't sleep on his papers though.
wowoowowow I love Dr. Ng he is so funny and actually makes history interesting w realistic examples which makes it fun. He seems intimidating but joke around with him and he'll love u. Also, you don't have to read just ask questions abt his lectures and ur fine. His assignments are so easy with only two 1,000-word essays, two quizzes, and a final
Dr. NG is a really fun and engaging teacher. He does get quite off topic at times and his analogies can be hard to follow but overall his class is enjoyable to be in. Best to keep on track of the readings and do your papers ahead of time because is a little tough. Fun guy, 10/10 would take again. GREAT W/ ZOOM and accommodating, gives extensions.
This class was very shallow and rudimentary. I suspect it is because the professor is not a good historian.
Argues historical fact on the basis of "because I said so." Doesn't know half of what he thinks he knows.
Worst historian I've ever come across.
I was in the same class as the guy who taught him that nations and states are not the same thing. To be honest, I am very embarrassed to say that this person was my professor.
He puts you down regarding info despite info coming from sources that he relies on. He doesn't know half of what he thinks he knows despite his rhetoric. Chooses not to answer question when he knows he'll loose the argument. Chooses to leave out important parts of history of topic.
He would always claim the opposite of what you argued in your discussion post and if you disagreed with him he would take points off.
I don't know how this guy got to where he is, not that being a history professor is impressive or anything anyways. He is proof positive. For every claim about historical fact, he never provided any proof, reasoning, logic, or argument for why. He just shoved the claim down your throat, which was actually his own opinion and not historical fact.
Well he doesn't understand fundamental historical concepts such as nation, state, and political entities so how can I give him more than one star for either category?
He gets mad if your view differs from his and then he'll claim your view is not factual despite mountains of factual evidence you provide meanwhile he provides none for his view.
The class is very difficult.
Michael Ng is the worst historian I have ever met.
I was extremely disappointed with this professor. His lectures are essentially him narrating his own opinion on history and there is little analysis or critical thinking required.
This professor is really harsh in all of his feedback (and grading), it can sometimes feel really personal even when it's literally just an essay. A heavy part of the grade is participation and he'll get really upset if you don't talk in class, even though most of his class was lecture. Go to office hours!!!
This professor is blatantly rude and has no problem insulting you to your face. I feel like I genuinely learned nothing and he's probably the main reason I thought about dropping honors all quarter. He assigns WAY too many readings (that aren't even relevant if you attend class).
I took Dr. Ng's class my first quarter of my first year. When I was taking the class, it was far too diffucult for me and I hated everything about it. In hindsight, Dr. Ng is a very intelligent man and he's very passionate about history. His class is diffucult but not awful if you're willing to put a lot of effort into it.
Very difficult class. His lectures are good, his readings are impossible. Sometimes can be hard to deal with, and is quirky in his own way. Grading is tough, best redeeming quality is that he will help you write your paper during office hours.
Michael Ng is an awful historian and professor. I learned nothing in this class from him. ChatGPT was far more helpful and insightful than him.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. I regret wasting my time.
Michael Ng is one of the best professors I have ever had.
Incredible lectures. Dr. Ng is smart and hilarious and made me care about history. UCORs are hit or miss, but any class with Ng is a hit!
Michael Ng is my least favorite history professor I have ever had. He has an extremely poor understanding of history and his classes are just as boring.
Great professor!
Please do not let these reviews scare you from taking his class. Professor Ng deeply cares about what he teaches and is honestly an amazing professor. He's very lenient and understanding with extensions and is very funny. His classes are very lecture heavy, but if you actually like history, they are very enjoyable. This class is an easy A!
Terrible historian and an even worse professor.
HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. he smells like wet socks.
His class was meh. Kind of forgettable.
He is an awful historian.
Not a good historian.
Not very approachable at times. I found it difficult as much of his feedback on papers was nitpicky and didn't help much. He can be a bit condescending but has pretty funny humor.
He doesn't understand historical events if they aren't immediately relatable to the present, meaning he lacks the one quality that makes a good historian.
Ng is a Great professor but try to get to know him a little at the beginning of the quarter. He does assign a lot of readings but to be honest most of them can be ignored as he covers them in class but do try and at least skim through. Try to show up to classes because he lectures a lot but if you take notes during his class, it is not bad.
This class was too easy. I don't really feel like I learned much or was challenged.
Dry lectures that lack insight.
He clearly knew what he was talking about, and had a grasp on this subject. Maybe he didn't understand social cues but he OFTEN (15-20 times/class) referred to students in hypothetical situations that involved s*x work and p*rn. I felt so extremely bad around him and didn't want to be alone in a room with him. Know this before choosing his class
He thinks he knows a lot more about history than he really does.
He was awesome sauce!
He was the king! Brought his dogs to class, but did talk alot. Did like him alot! He was cool guy!
He is an awful historian. Stay away.
Michael is a dilettante, plain and simple.
Michael is perhaps the world's most unknowledgeable historian and he bases historical fact on his own limited knowledge and subjective opinion.
Michael is a terrible historian who doesn't understand basic history.
He doesn't understand that historical fact is based on actuality and not his own subjective opinion or beliefs.
Easy class, I don't feel like I learned much. He is a terrible historian.
Michael is one of the most unknowledgeable historians who ever existed. He also bases historical fact on his own limited knowledge and subjective opinion.
I don't think I ever heard him make an assertion about history without providing any reasoning or evidence to support his claims.
He is the most unknowledgeable history professor I have ever met and one of the most socially awkward people I have ever met.
I've never seen one person have so many braindead interpretations on history in my entire life.
Michael is an awful historian. I learned absolutely nothing from him. All he does is ramble and rant about crackpot theories and doesn't stick to the facts at all.
Michael Ng is perhaps the world‘s most unknowledgeable historian. He also bases historical fact on his own limited knowledge and subjective opinion.
He has been a university history professor for around fifteen years and doesn't understand fundamental historical concepts like nations and states.
This class was a waste of time, Ng is an awful historian.
This was a terrible course.
Take this class if you want to sit in a lecture listening to the world's most unknowledgeable historian who doesn't understand anything about history.
Stay away from this professor if you want to actually learn real history. He is more of a pop historian, and a bad one even at that.
STAY AWAY!!!
Would not take a class with him ever again.
Doesn't know a whole lot about history despite being a history professor.
Highschool level of depth. Ng is a terrible historian. You will not analyze beyond, as said, high school level of historical depth.
His knowledge of history doesn't go beyond a children's book from DK or some similar publisher. He is a dilettante.
Michael Ng is perhaps the most unknowledgeable historian I have ever interacted with.
A very good professor and very passionate about the content. Classes can get a little boring at times, but can be very engaging with his examples. A lot of reading, but I found it very interesting and engaging. His RMP rating is due to a review bomb because the guy's life is sad, and this is all he looks forward to in life due to being bullied irl
I thought he was great! We went to dimsum and if you go to his office hours, he will basically tell you how to get an A on the paper.
Professor Ng was a very nice person and knew a decent amount of history facts, but he was also VERY socially awkward and to be honest was not very intelligent when interpreting and understanding said history facts.
He has difficulty admitting he lost an argument and will make non-sequitur arguments to end the argument or just completely avoid the topic when he knows he lost.
His historical analysis is fully based on him confusing objective facts for his own subjective reasoning. You can present him a body of objective facts but he will reject it for his own subjective thoughts, like he thinks he is the world's premier historian. His arguments consist of logical fallacies to sustain his argument in response to you.
Is a relativley nice guy, he is very strict on technology so steer clear of going on your phone in class or he will embarass you in front of everyone. Other than that he is pretty nice, and often is accessible through office hours and email. If you want to actually learn though don't take this class, he goes on many tangents.
Michael Ng is one of a few history professors I have had that made me realize a ton of history professors are just a bunch of jokers and the field ironically has a ton of bad historians in it. The fact that someone like him can actually become a professor is sad.
Frankly, the reviews scared me at first and made me believe that he would be difficult. But Professor Ng has been so flexible towards the class this entire quarter and is actually pretty sweet! There is quite a lot of reading in this course, but it's worth it in order to understand the material. He's one of the sweetest professors I've ever had.
he grades heavily on participation but gives few chances for people to actually participate. He usually ends up talking about himself which leaves it hard to make connections relavent to the conversation. I tried to stay positive with this class but I just cant and i wouldnt reccomend. And do not buy the required readings because we rarely use them
Ok I'm so confused why Dr. Ng has such a low rating. He is a kind, respectful, helpful, and super funny professor. I loved his class. I was never too fond of learning about history but he made it interesting because he relates a lot of it to issues today. The work was never hard but there is a lot of reading.
First of all, he got review bombed so if you have him next quarter for 3400, please don't be stressed. He is one of the best professors I've had, I love his stories and his three piece suits. We barely have any discussions, but make sure to ask questions and thoughts any time during his lectures for participation.
Ng lectures alone Forgotten dates on the board Shadows claim the name
Dr. Ng was one of the best professors I have ever had. Tons of knowledge and an overall great guy.
It is pretty clear that Michael is on the spectrum. I don't know why he is allowed to teach at university.
