he's a got a good sense of humor but doesn't clarify enough
Wacko! No falling asleep. I actually enjoyed his classes. Great prof
Very sexy!! Laughs at himself a lot. Hard marker though. KRAZY!!
Sooo funny!! Loved his class, but he marks a little hard.
Never a dull moment in one of his classes. However, an extremely hard marker.

One of the best profs I ever had. He's a cute little fart.
Classes are enjoyable, and funny. But, he is an extremely hard marker.
Hard marker, but a nice guy. cute guy.

He's kind funny in class and will make an effort to see you but VERY HARD MARKER
hilarious & awesome! Very helpful and kinda tough-you WON'T fall asleep in class
Excellent teacher, I would recommend him to anyone
Hilarious, but a hard marker......kinda looks like a simpson..I loved his class
Funny guy, kinda hard marker, but pretty reasonable!
Very funny and sarcastic. reminds me of martin short...he sounds like him and after a while looks like him. very good but UNBELIVABLY HARD MARKER!

Severely overrated on this website. Arrogant. Expects students to write at far too high a level. Don't take his course if you value your GPA.
He is okay. He has high expectations, marks hard, and thinks he is better and much smarter than anyone else in the universe. Yet other than that fact he is okay and adds a bit of passion to his classes. He just needs to get over himself..
A good prof that is very helpful.

Sarcasm indeed. Very entertaining class, never know what to expect. Very funny person, and very interesting take on the topics of study, very fair marker. Good Prof, definitely recommnet to others.
Do not take this class from him.
Great prof! You have to get used to his sense of humor....but he makes class interesting.
Very easy going and open to debates
A wonderful professor who truly loves drama (and it shows). Isn't an "easy marker" but you get what you deserve. A wonderful sense of humor and tells it like it is. Has exceptional tastes in literature and drama! ...Easy on the eyes too...
Good prof, interesting lectures and you actually learn something. Not for the spoon-fed crowd.
Honestly he was the worst prof I've ever had. He had a stupid sense of humor and marked way to hard. I thought he was the biggest moron ever!
Great prof. I loved his class. He always acted out all the plays we studied, which was very funny. very hard marker though.
A good prof with some funny sense of humour. Very picky about everything but very interested in debates. The more you explain your point of view clearly, the better! Overall, a recommended prof.
If you take a class from Nolan you had better know how to read and write and think because he will not do it for you. I loved his class because he is an interesting person and will do accents. An 'A' from him is worth its weight in gold.
Best prof I had during my last three years at MUN. Very funny and interesting person. His class will put you in a great mood!
great teacher with a wicked sense of humor...gives you what you deserve on papers and tests, but all in all a really good prof
Very interesting guy. For better or worse the class won't be dull. Will take things personally and mark harder those who argue or contradict him. However, if you follow directions, pay attention, show up to class you will enjoy the course and learn a lot
I loved this guy! Anyone who can make you laugh through Shakespeare deserves a lot of credit. As long as you pay attention and watch your spelling he's a fair marker. By far my favorite proff ever.
Bets type of person and really funny but a fairly hard marker...actually really hard marker!!but good guy

Funny teacher but a very hard marker
Funny but a really hard grader!! Too hard!! Have fun trying to get an A in the course...
Extremely difficult marker. Sense of humour is a bit off sometimes. Seems to have contempt for students, but nice if you work and talk.

Not too bad of a teacher. A word to the wise: read some classic literature before going to class, especially some greek.
VERY hard marker. impossible to get over 65 in his class. if u want to have a high GPA get out of his class NOW!!!!!!
Extremely hard marker
I'd agree that hes not the easiest marker in the world but if you're willing to put in a little effort it pays off. He's very direct about what he wants from his students. I loved going to his class, hes an actor at heart.
seems to be a hard marker, but it also seems that he knows what he is looking for when grading papers. he does so much in class, he expects you to know a lot when you write tests. love his class!
He's entertaining yet hard.
Loved the class, marks fair!!
if you can stay away. please do. trust me. I ignored people saying that he was a hard grader but he is crazy. He don't give good comments or good grades. Jokes around therefore hard to take notes. I never failed anything until I recieved an inclass back.
I loved this guy. A good teacher, fair, and interesting.
Yes he IS a hard marker but he gives really good lectures that take you through the plays step by step and adds some humor too! Whoe wouldn't love a little humor with Shakespeare??
Extremely funny and interesting. Not that hard of a marker. Laugh at him when he tells a joke!!!
Explain to me how a student with an average of 75% in History/english major in their final semeser can get less than 65% on their Nolan assignments despite having attended all classes and submitted all work on time. Absurd marker yet entertaining class.
Great Prof, enjoyed his class, you have to work hard just as in any other class.
Fair, yet somewhat hard marker. It was fun to be thought by him, as he and our class shared many fine laughs together.
he is an idiot!! if you dont have the same opinion as him then he will mark your paper wrong! he tries to hard to be funny, and most of his jokes aren't funny. i really dislike being in his class.
Nolan is a good prof, but it seemed like he hated teaching our class. His assignments are easy, just boring & he marks fair. He's funny & a nice guy, & will go out of his way to help you with anything. If you have to do 1080 try not to get him because his speciality is Drama & Shakespeare, not 1080.
Great prof, He expects a lot but that's a good quality in a prof. Really knows his stuff about Shakespeare and is not actually that bad a marker. I'm an English major who has yet to get very good marks at MUN but I am doing great in his class at the moment.
Why did memorial let him teach first years. He marks way to hard for a beginning level course. Thing is he likes in-class asignments which is unfair cause it's most peoples worst nightmare anyway. I didn't enjoy his english classes. But when he talks about shakespear he knows his stuff.not 180

I took him for drama english and despite it being his speacialty he was all over the place during lectures..pausing to add in an idiotic joke or to just look out the window and stop in the middle of a sentance. An extremely hard marker he expects you to have the exact same opinion he really sucks!!
HE MARKS WAY TOO HARD!!!!!!!! He is very hard to follow.
Stay away!
I loved english before but now I'm no sure. He just read a book outloud in class, didn't analyze or really teach us anything and then when it was time to write an in class I was lost! Also for a first year course he expects way too much and gives the impression that he doesn't want to be bothered.
He was not clear of his expectations in that we kind of had to learn from our mistakes as we went.. He was good, hes just not a spoonfeeder. If you have problems he is there to give help.. I did fine but I could have done better with more questions on my part.
Pretty funny, but a VERY hard marker. Great class to relax and sleep!
He was pretty funny and dramatic but his sarcasm and cynical nature made him difficult to approach. He could be clearer on what exactly he wants from us, instead of mocking the class marks after the fact. EXTREEMLY hard marker!. I would not recomend his class at all!
Save yourself and stay away! He was by far the worst english prof that I have had before. He actually tells you not to come see him for help and literally runs out of the class before you can ask him for any help too!
Pretty good teacher, hard on the marks, but not too hard compared to some other profs. He borders on genius when it comes to drama, but can be unclear and is always eccentric. He's a lot better if you force him to explain what he wants from the class. Wastes time messing around though.
He is funny and makes you actually look forward to go to class, however, I thought he was a hard marker and somewhat unclear to what he really wanted
Extremely egotistical, very flamboyant, and kind of reminds me of the gay prince from Brave Heart. Tries very hard to intimidate his students, and doesn’t offer help when you ask for clarity. The course, however, was very interesting and I would recommend it (with a DIFFERENT professor).
Quite possibly the sorriest excuse for an English professor, and human being for that matter. I can't imagine any other person turning academia into such a tedius bore.
I love Michael Nolan! I will take any course from this man that is offered. He is entertaining and really helpful if you are having trouble in class.
Hard marker...yes. Fair marker..yes, very clear on what he wants, sometimes arrogant...maybe, but isn't every long time English professor? I enjoyed his courses and would have no trouble taking anouther one with him, even though my GPA will suffer.
HUNK!!!!!!
Hard marker, but fair! Went over things in class pretty thoroughly. Made class more interesting, he's very energetic. For the in-class assignments, he gave us the questions that we'd be writing on in the class before (always a plus) and dropped the lowest of our three marks :)
One of the funniest prof's i've had. Made class kind of fun. loves shakespeare a little too much perhaps. very hard maker.
He's an alright prof. Doesn't want to get to know his students and is very easily distracted. marks better than my last english prof. Can be funny... sometimes.
He was easy to talk to, very clear and extremely interesting:-) I loved this guy!!
Very fair.
I think Mike is awesome. He's hilarious, passionate, and a very fair grader.
Michael Nolan is a very arrogant conceited individual. He expects all his students to have an extremly broad knowledge of the subject matter before taking the course. He take more time criticizing students work then actually aiming for improvement. He attempts to set a high standard but really he is a jerk.
I would not reccommend this prof to anyone, not even my worst enemy! I found this prof to be funny and in class he seems nice but truly a horrible prof! He is very arrogant, easily distracted, gives no notes, and I found he that he didn't help students very much and was not at all approachable!
NO ONE pick this prof...He is an extreamly hard marker....as very unrealistic expectations of his students....If you don't think like him...YOU FAIL.....I had an 87 average in highschool english.....now i might have a 50.
He's the devil
Absolutely dreadful professor. Avoid him at all costs.
absolutely horrible. expects to much pre knowledge. a very hard marker. avoid at all costs
People who give this prof bad ratings are just bitter because their marks went down. He does mark hard and your gpa will suffer greatly. However, he is very clear about what he expects....and his lectures are terriffic. If you go to class and listen...and go see him you should have no trouble. Don't panic b/c your first mark is bad..it'll come up
Great in class. Knows the subject matter well. An extremely hard marker, but that's how people improve their writing, and is to be expected when switching from high school to university. Tells you what he expects. Easy to get along with if you take the time.
A very knowledgeable man, however, he believes himself to be superior and never really teaches the subject matter in an enthusiastic or inticing way. Rather, he uses his knowledge to show off. A hard marker which was good but a horrible prof.

He did tell us what to read and the main aspects of what to know. However, most days he'd just talk about other books and movies and think we were stupid because we didn't know about them. He is smart but used his knowledge to talk about how great his is and how dumb we were. Plus he marks hard and admitted most of his students fail.
I think he is a great professor and he takes a great interest in his students.
He marks extremely hard and I'm never quite sure what exactly it is he wants.
Mr. nolan is very intelligent, and his sence of humor strikes me as funny. Some say he's bitter an sarcastic but I think he's pretty hot :-)
I think he is a good teacher!
Expects about a 4th level english work from 1st years. Doesn't teach you what he wants you to know before hand, he waits until he has graded your papers and then explain how you SHOULD have done things. Try to avoid him at all costs. You will not do well.
This guy was really nice. Please remember to bring your books to class!!
eww, thats gross, he's not hot, and he said he'd rather be a garbage man than teach. he should look for a job in the sanitation industry. would make me smile.
Definetely the best prof ever. He may go off topic a little from time to time but he's so funny, I don't care. The in class essay are a little difficult unless you know the stories as well as him. But I would recommend him for sure, I wish I could do every english course with this man.
I went from a 90% average English student to a 60%. He may be funny but he is so vague and unclear in class. Also, his written critical feedback on my papers were extremely rude, such as: "You try too hard." I love English; but Profs like him make me have second thoughts.
I think a lot of the negativity thrown his way is from first years who do not yet realize that you need to take notes on what the prof is saying, not what he writes on the board. --READ-- the material, take jot notes, show up and your marks should increase as the term goes on. Mike wasn't my best english prof ever, but he's decent.
He is a pretty funny teacher. I like his style, but I think the problem is no one asks questions, thus no one gets answers. If you ask, he'll tell you. And he keeps it quite entertaining! He does however grade heavily on grammer and spelling.
I think he is a great teacher! He is currently teaching me English 1102 and I have so much fun in class! He is really funny and makes the plays alot more interesting than you would expect. I would recommend him anytime!!
Not as bad as a lot of people say he is. His classes are really interesting and most of the time he is incredibly funny. I enjoyed going to this class, he deffaintly won't put you to sleep! Marks a little hard, but don't all english profs?
This is personally not my favorite prof but he is good at teaching, but when it comes to marking everything is wrong. I took the notes.. but still everything was wrong. Tends to get to me when i had a 75 average in 1080 and a 60 in 1102. My writing wasn't too bad before.. i dont think it has changed. but he is a good teacher. Just not very helpful.
BRUTAL marker... he was so weird that he was funny.. thinks everything he says is right and if u interpret something different it is totally wrong ..
Makes class kinda interesting but is a hard marker. Tells jokes and thinks he's hilarious.. most time, he is.
Excellent prof! He is a very hard but fair marker, and you will learn alot from the comments he makes on your paper. He focuses alot on grammar. He is very entertaining and makes class a great laugh. Do not expect to come out with as high of a mark that you are used to. Overall I definitally recommend him!!
Took the course with friends; they all got scared and dropped it. Prof. Nolan is a hard marker but I adored his class. He is a witty man, despite his brutal marking system, I would certainly take another class with him. He really knows his stuff. Don't be put off by neg. comments, give him a chance!
This guy should not be teaching. Period. I just convocated with top grades, yet I averaged around a 55 in his class before I dropped it. When I dropped his class my honours su****isor told me that it was "Very Understandable to do so". NEVER take a course with this man.
a very fair proff. he won't give you more or less than you diserve, but he'll always try and help you along with your papers. excellent class discussions and really did make learning the material interesting.
Understanding that Dr. Nolan will not spoon feed you is essential. Do not waste the man's time with anything less than your best
Enjoyable prof, tough but fair marker.
Professor Nolan is an amazing teacher. I came out of 1080 with a 69; I was completely frustrated and felt like I should try for something other than English as my major. HOWEVER, I got an A in Professor Nolan's class ... AND I've managed an A in every single English course I've taken since. I like to think his influence had something to do with it.
Like most people have said: BURUTAL MARKER, but he is hillarious. He gives you everything you need to pass. If you aren't doing well, go talk to him, he's there to help you. Make sure you go to class and ask questions.
Nolan may be a very hard marker but if you actually want to improve in english then he is the way to go. I'm doing horrible but I feel like I have learned more from him then I would have from any other professor.
he tells you what not to do instead of what you should do, he goes completely off topic every class and is easily distracted bit of a funny character but avoid him if possible
He was an excellent teacher who had a great deal of time for us.
I could listen to him give random music references all day. Kind of pretentious. Brutal marker. Not very understanding. Definitely a prof not a teacher - meaning he'll lecture about all the awesome stuff he knows but he doesn't help you learn it. Too much like a typical english major for my liking. Has great hair though.
so, so, so funny. but, oddly enough, his class was boring. maybe it's shakespeare's fault?
This guy really knows his stuff, its always nice to have a prof who cares about the material they're teaching, but he is a HARD marker, you really have to work for your marks in his class.
Hard marker, rude, not very helpful. He doesn't encourage you to work, he shuts down any attempts you do make. Not a positive prof. Easily distracted, mocked answers given, and made inappropriate comments at times. Avoid!!
Dr. Nolan is a brilliant professor. He is sarcastic &funny. He is a hard marker; however, if you do not understand something go see him and he will help you in any way he can. He tends to teach sophisticated material, but his class is fun and his music references are awesome. Give him a chance, especially if you are an English Major.
Terrific professor. Interesting, insightful, intelligent and hilarious. Attendance is important for understanding what he is looking for in his essays.
Good prof. A little off the wall. May seem unapproachable until you make the effort to approach him. Don't mistake his jokes for opinions. His courses tend to lack supplementary materials.
He was the worst prof I've ever had. Avoid!
I thought he was great. He made me really interested in what we were reading. I only got a 65 in the course but the readings were brutal. Ancient greek is hard to read but he translated every sentence for us and made it so clear. He always managed to get a picture in your mind of what was going on in the story. Seems uneasy to approach but heisnot
Its simple with Nolan, if YOU put the effort into it, you will do fine. Always willing to help you out outside of class. He does love his English, but doesn't expect you to know what he does. Keep it simple stupid!
HE IS A VERY FUNNY GUY BUT HE IS NOT THAT GOOD OF A TEACHER. BUT I DONT THINK THAT ITS HIS FAULT BECAUSE THE COURSE IS REALLY HARD AND HE DOEN'T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO TEACH THIS COURSE. ALSO I THINK IF HE IS A BIT LENIENT THE COURSE WILL BE BETTER. ALSO IF THEY DECREASE THE READING MATRIAL IT MIGHT MKE THE COURSE A BIT BETTER.
If you come from a High School where everybody does well in English you're in for a shock. Be prepared to actually work! Attend class and take lots of notes, he seems to be appreciative of those who speak up and provide ideas. Very entertaining and funny. I recommend this prof if you LIKE English in the first place.
Love. Love. Love. My favourite prof in my first semester. Hard marker (got 65-70s) but didn't try very hard. He likes people who answer his questions in class and he takes attendance. Very funny and entertaining, but I learned a lot. Great prof if you like english and want to improve. I appreciate the lack of **** assignments
Did not enjoy Nolan as a prof, he covers material in books well although after assignment are graded he discusses mistakes students made among whole class in a sarcastic manner. He is a very hard marker.
Tough marker. The novels (which were tougher than other 1101 slot novels) didn't seem to be open to interpretation so definitely go to class and take note of his opinions. He does provide good written feedback on submitted work.
HORRIBLE. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. In previous English courses I've gotten A's and A+'s. His marking makes no sense. Horribly rude and inconsiderate.
God do I ever regret not dropping this class the first day. He goes over the novels but that is all. He wants the class to teach the material people do not get, if no one gets it he does not explain. He is rude and discouraging. He is constantly down on his class and acts like he is above his students. He has made me lose interest in English.
AVOID AVOID AVOID. Horrible person, horrible teacher. When from getting and A+ in two other English courses to almost failing.
Horrible professor and person in general. Marks hard and acts as if he is above students. After he passes things back he complains(forever)in a sarcastic, rude way how everyone in the class is a bad writer. He constantly bashes modern ways and the books are old, boring and written in old English which is hard for many people. Takes attendance.
Good teacher, very helpful.
Worse prof I have ever encountered and I have been in 3 different schools. Very arrogant, marks first year courses as if fourth year, just all around a terible terible experience. If you want 1 mark keeping your GPA down then here is your chance
Horrible prof. He picks favorites, and marks everyone else terribly hard. If he doesn't like you, you're guaranteed a failing grade. He gets scarily angry when people are late for class, and wastes class time discussing attendance and punctuality. The only opinions he likes in papers are his own, originality not appreciated. Take someone else.
I'm amused by how many of the negative comments here featured atrocious spelling and grammar. He does put emphasis on basic english abilities, but he's an academic, not a baby-sitter. As a proffesor, I found him always engaging, and a refreshing break after years of being taught down to.
Horrible teacher. I would avoid him at all costs. I was an A to A+ student in high school english. I cannot get over a 70 in his course. He doesn't "teach". I have learned nothing this semester. He puts his students down a lot! I am changing my english course next semester to insure that there is no possible way I can have him as a teacher!
Horrible prof.. I have been an A's student in high school english and my highest mark with Nolan was 70. Not helpful at all an very arrogant and rude I would reccomend avoiding him
Worst prof ever. I had him two years ago and I still can't believe how terrible he was. He marked insanely hard. He classes did not stimulate my interest what so ever. The novels that he assigned were ridiculous! Seriously avoid him no matter what.
I did this course by distance. He responded fairly quickly to student's questions and he clearly spent a lot of time on the course. He's a fair marker and you will learn a lot from him. He chose some pretty good stories to work with and chose Hamlet as our play. I don't know what he's like in person, but over distance, he was quite professional.
Great, knowledgable prof. Tough marker but once you grasp an understanding you'll do fine.
Horrible prof, his marking schemes made no sense. Very approachable and professional but that is his downfall to teaching first year english courses. He marks as if you are an english major in your 4th year. Very tough marker
A VERY HARD MARKER!. I wish I never got in his class . Your marks will drop 20-30 percent from high school . He expects you to know everything there is . He wants no opinion just straight out of the book. He's a bit strange therefore his lectures are hilarious but when you get your marks back it won't be. Id say avoid but he teaches everything!
Hilarious guy, loves to act out scene in plays. One of the most fun professors I've had. A very hard marker however.
He expected your work to be top notch like you were getting an english degree. He marked very hard for a first year course.
VERY VERY HARD MARKER. I Went to him with all my papers, got help from friends and the writing center and still did not do good. He was a great teacher inside the classroom but when it came to papers and grading he is horrible.
he's unreal.. hardest marker I have ever had. He gives 5 content quizzes, which are easy, but the tests are not. Improvement with him is very hard, once you get your first mark, thats what he keeps giving. He does do very good analysises in class, however, but he's definitely crazy! take him if you want a lively class, but marks will suffer
Avoid unless you're looking to lower your gpa. His lectures are fun to attend and he himself is very helpful, but his marking is atrocious.
Fun teacher, but really hard marker. Gives you one mark and after that every mark is around the same.
Come prepared and you will do fine.
Michael Nolan is a legend. Literally one of the funniest people I've met in my life. Fairly hard marker, but his lectures will make your day. I'm still loling at his jokes. What a guy.
Probably the most eccentric person I've ever met. I've had him for English twice. He is hilarious, but a very hard marker. Don't expect anything higher than a 70 in a course taught by him, and even those are rare.
He may be tough on grades but that is typical for english. Classes are a blast he's hilarious and very good at helping you understand the course material.
Hard marker, but hilarious. He's super energetic and obviously loves what he's teaching. You'll never get bored even though most of the readings are tough.
He is not a good prof, and terriable at explaning things! If you have him I would STRONGLY advise that you look for a new prof!
He's a hard marker but funny, and sometimes he doesn't explain the true meaning of a poem only nit picks on parts of it, it would be better if he summarized the Poem also
This prof seemed great in the class room, a bit vague with poems, but overall he was enthusiastic... BUT I directly quoted him from class in an in class essay and he said it wasn't true, this also happened to friends of mine. He is a VERY tough marker and what you get in the first essay determines your mark for the rest of the semester, AVOID!!
Nice guy but the material he selects was super dull and dry. Most memorable about him is his Chief Wiggum/Quagmire laugh
He expects a lot from his first year students, this is probably their first university english course, and the expectations are high. He assumes that you know a lot about writing and referencing. But if you work hard (really hard) you do get rewarded. Tough prof. If you like a challange this is a prof you should take a class with.
Good prof, need to come to class
This guy is really funny and great to listen to, but a lot of the time he would just read the poems in class and that could get kind of boring. The thing I didn't like most about him though was that he was a SUPER hard marker. I would not recommend him if you want to get a good mark. A's are hard to come by for him!
Interesting guy, but when it comes to grading watch out! The easy going attitude stops as soon as the papers come in and you will receive the same mark (give or take 2 percent) on all papers... stay away if possible.
After seeing comments here I was a little nervous about taking a class with him but he really isn't as bad as it seems here. And, of course, he's hilarious! I'm taking another class with him next semester :)
He's very clear, he doesn't give straightforward notes, so you have to have a fast hand and write out everything he's saying ... if you can handle that though, he's enthusiastic and clear! What everyones saying is true though ... he's a tough grader. Fantastic and entertaining in class, though, and he doesn't give too much homework!
Nolan is not as harsh as people make him out to be on this.I get consistent 70's in most of my English courses and all A's in his class! He is entertaining, hilarious, and really gets into his work. I really enjoy his classes; however, you have to attend class if you want marks, as he doesn't give notes.Great dude though!:)
In general he is a funny little dude, but I don't go to mun to make friends. He marks very hard and your grades tend to stay the same as the first one you received, regardless of improvement. I would only recommend him for someone who wants a challenge.
Prof. Nolan is definitely funny, his classes are entertaining, and this helps make the course interesting even if it's not an interesting topic. He's very clear with his expectations, and gives great feedback. He does tend to read from the book, but he makes it interesting, and easier to understand and dedicate to memory. Would highly recommend.
Important to attend classes. Professor is passionate about all of the work and wouldnt hurt to look into backgrounds of the authors. Professor makes the work interesting. Tests and assignments are good. Gives plenty of feedback. This prof is also hilariously eccentric . Every class I'm laughing so he's a good time.
Don't skip class because he doesn't give notes. Could hardly pick out his writing on my papers. Don't expect a grade over 75 unless you're an English genius. A nice guy in general, but didn't enjoy him as an instructor.
Honestly, the best prof I've had and best teacher that i've had. Funniest guy and really easy to listen to, knows what he's talking about. If you're looking for the challenge and to improve, highly recommend. Tougher grader but makes you work for it. Highly recommend going to class. Overall, amazing prof.
Dr. Nolan is a great prof with a hilarious personality and keeps class interesting the majority of the time. His evaluations are very fair and the final exam had no surprises. Definitely have to work for an A, but it is not impossible. Once you understand what he wants in a paper, it's a lot easier to adjust and get a higher mark. Recommended.
One of the best I've had. If you go to class and take notes, its not that hard to do good. He is the funniest man alive and really knows his stuff. Recommend for sure.
Very enthusiastic and really gets into the material. His comments on papers are extremely difficult to read and can be slightly rude. Won't discuss them unless you book a time, as he doesn't have office hours. Interesting class but definitely avoid him if you can.
Really nice guy and very enthusiastic about what he teaches, though can sometimes be unclear about what he's asking for on assignments. Tough grader, but not impossible. Overall good prof.
Over all nice guy, he is a very eccentric and makes classes entertaining. However I found him to be a very hard marker and is very unclear with what he is asking for on assignments and essays. His writing is also extremely difficult to read and his comments are often sarcastic as opposed to constructive. Choose another professor if you can.
Here's an example of Michael Nolan's marking: I received a low mark on the rough copy of a term paper. Naturally, I fixed all of the mistakes that I had made and even had an english major (who tutored) to fix the mistakes in my paper. After handing it in for the second time, with corrections, I received the same grade, with no explanation.
He's one of the best at his job. Really knows how to deliver a message, and not very tough on students, very open minded, and an amazing human being in general.
Take him and you won't regret it. Amazing lectures
Honestly such an amazing prof, he is absolutely hilarious and makes you interested in his lectures. I actually found myself looking forward to his classes because it was always a good laugh to listen to him.
seriously the hardest teacher and hardest marker. great guy though and funny
SO this guy is something else, first few classes you think its gonna be breeze until you get that paper back and he rips you apart, if you don't get a good mark on the first one, dont expect it to get better he pretty much assigns a mark to a student
Professor Nolan will be the most entertaining professor you have had in a long time (maybe ever). That where the fun stops, It is very difficult to obtain a good grade on his in-class' and papers as he seemingly assigns a student a grade from the first paper on, even with revision the mark barely changes. VERY tough grader with unreadable writing.
Classes are mostly him talking, but it's okay cause he is hilarious. He likes people who answer his questions also. It is hard to read his handwriting on papers, but you can ask him and he'll explain what he means. Tough-grader, but not impossible if you take notes of what he says to do in each essay. Loved going to class to read Shakespeare plays!
Ask questions or he wont give you answers
Really hard marker, even if you follow his comments on his essays he won't give you a much higher mark and gives no room for improvement
Very tough grader. You will most likely recieve the same grade throughout the entire semester despite the improvements that you will make to your writing. Feedback is very difflicult to comprehend unless you meet with him and discuss the matter. Overall, Michael is a poor instructor but a great person.
Funny and inspirational man, but a challening professor
Such a funny guy but a very hard marker, often his ideas about poetry seem to be far off what you think the intended idea is
Interesting prof. He picks out works based on the ease of finding stuff on it w/ Google, this is why it's important to go to class. His lectures can go off on tangents but can be interesting. Take notes in jot note form. What he speaks about will probably be on some assignment. If you notice him repeating something, jot it down! Few online notes.
Interesting lectures, very engaged in the texts, but assessments can be difficult. Seems like the first mark you get is what you're stuck with.
Very hard marker, but very entertaining to sit through his lectures
Dr. Nolan is the definition of an okay prof. He is fun in class, and makes lots of jokes which keeps lectures interesting. He is a tough grader though, and unless you show a lot of improvement your basically getting the same grades throughout the entire course. His classes are fun, but be prepared to write!
Michael is hilarious, but his humour is acquired and not everybody's cup of tea. You have to put lots of effort into your work if you want to end one of his classes with at least a B. He also doesn't put notes online, and he doesn't provide a lot of flexibility when it comes to different perspectives on essays. His POV or nothing for the most part.
Michael is not a prof you want if you struggle at all with English. He is very funny and engaging (so long as you are willing to discuss in class). I found his grading to be clear - but extremely harsh.
Gives many "do's and don't's" for assignments/essays so it's very clear what he wants. Hilarious prof, super entertaining lectures. Teaches very differently from high school English curriculum (in a good way). Explains everything about the novel being studied. No surprises/uncertainty in his class.
One of the best profs I've ever had, made my writing so much better even if at first he is harsh. If you think you are good at English and receive high grades in high school think again. Explains all the books and has really interesting choice in books. He is also very funny and has really entertaining lectures.
Does not post any notes online, very tough grader although he lets you do a revision on all your essays, grades harder as semester goes on. Seems like he went to the library and choose strangest books he could find for the class to read (like Im talking lesbian vampires and sh*t). Would've dropped the class if I had my time back.
His lectures are pretty good, but he grades horribly. He thinks that if you don't enjoy reading the classics then you shouldn't be in English. One good thing is that he lets you re-do some of the essay's, although the mark usually stays the same.
He expects way too much out of first year students, lets you revise your essays but rarely changes your mark. Do not take him if you want to be successful in this course
Do not take this course if you want to pass. He does not care if you are struggling and if you dont know how to write an essay perfectly then you wont pass any essay assignments. basically the mark you get at the beginning of the year is consistent throughout the semester unless it drops but it wont be higher, even if you make progress
Michael is a funny and interesting guy, but as far as his lectures go, he is usually really sporadic and unhinged which can make him tough to follow. As many have already pointed out, he is an extremely tough grader. Even though he lets you improve on previous essays, often your marks won't go up by much.
If you're not an English person and you're only taking English because it's required for your program you should probably look for a different prof. Nolan is a hilarious guy but a really tough grader. Essentially most of what you learned in high school English is useless.
I would not recommend doing a class with this prof. Whatever the grade is you get at the beginning of the course will be what you get throughout the course regardless if you succeed in your writing. Bad for emailing back on time and have a very odd choice in books. Lectures are pointless, he only reads the book to you and gives essays on the book.
His lectures were basically him reading the book to us for the majority and then mentioning one small detail that would pop up on an exam. He lets you redo certain essays but very hard to determine what exactly he is looking for as his feedback is not always clear
He doesn't care about his students. The first mark you get in the course is the mark you will have for the remainder of the semester. I will never take a course with him again.
Absolutely hilarious except for when grades came back. Basically came in and read to use cause he thought we didn't understand the texts. We called him hobbit cause of his pocket watch that he used in exams. Don't ever expect technology to be used in this course, we couldn't even use online sources for the final paper.
Michael Nolan is brutal. He is such a hard grader. No matter how much you improve or revise essays he will not give you a better mark. I will never take another class with him again. Ive had an English teacher go over my essays and he still gave me a 55. Do NOT take him if you can avoid it.
Michael Nolan would have to be professor at MUN. Don't take this class if you plan on doing well. Nothing is good enough for him. You will spend the entire semester on edge wondering if you are going to pass the course. The first assignment mark is probably the best one you'll get the whole semester. It only goes down from there. He's awful
Professor Nolan is a tough prof, and takes some getting used to. Your first grade in the course is usually the worst, but listen to his advice and the marks will generally improve. Don't expect to have a high mark in his class, but if you put the effort in, passing isn't impossible. His lectures are funny, but overall take someone else if possible.
He is a very fun person but an extremely tough grader.
He is not a professor to go to for an easy grade, though if you're good in English he won't cause too much trouble with his marks (60-70% usually). Probably the finest lecturer I've had in the department. A great sense of humor, and an infectious passion. Works his hardest to get you as excited as he is about each and every work.
I have put in an honest work trying to pass this course by passing in every essay, going to every class, and by going to the help center for help with revisions yet despite this the prof will not give me over a 60% on any essay even though ive visited him multiple times to show how hard im working. Goodluck if you get stuck with him like I did XD
He's a tough grader, but it's possible to do well if you listen to feedback and participate in class discussion. He allows you to do revisions on two out of three of the essays, which was super helpful; my mark went up at least 10% for each essay revision, so make sure you listen to the feedback he gives!! Really funny guy too, entertaining classes
Nolan was probably my favourite prof I've had a MUN, I have to take a bunch of English courses as electives and I always try to get in a class he's teaching! He's not really a tough grader but will help you improve and gives very blunt advice. He's hilarious and insightful, and can keep an hour and 15 min class from getting boring.
Nolan does make class interesting as he is a funny fella but he is an extremely tough grader. I have done every assignment, every revision, I have went to him in is office for help but no matter what I do I cannot get over a 60. If you have a question he often wont answer it, he will say "I just explained that", "figure it out yourself"
He's hilarious and his lectures are the absolute best! If you come into the class expecting 80s because that's what you had in high school- don't. But, if you genuinely want to improve your skills, he's the one to take. I will 100% be looking for him to teach my next English class.
Nolan made the lectures fun and interesting. Clearly explains what is happening in each book we studied. tough grader but is helpful in improving skills in writing.
Nolan is really entertaining in class. You will learn a lot from him about essay writing if youre willing to put in the extra work to do the revisions and take his advice. Is a very tough grader though so Id be weary taking him if you need a minimum grade in the course to get into a faculty. He also makes himself very available in office hours.
I found the lectures dull and uninformative. There was no discoursive element, and having student input rather than summarizing the text section by section would have better prepared me for the assignments and granted me deeper meaning into the texts. Also having 45% of our grade be on assignments about the same text felt unbalanced.
Took Nolan's 1090 class in my first semester at MUN. Definitely helped me transition into university-level writing; I improved a lot over the course of the semester! He can be a tough grader, but I thought he was fair and my grade went up at least 10% after each essay revision, so listen to his feedback! Entertaining lectures, really funny guy!
If you put in the work and pay attention to feedback, you will do just fine. Fascinating selection of material, great lectures, flexible. Always look forward to class!
A good teacher
I thought I knew how to write essays. I guess not. Whatever you've learned in high school english, forget it because it's wrong (apparently). I work hard but my highest mark to date is 80. However, his feedback is helpful, insightful, and professional. Wouldn't personally take again, but if you thrive off of feedback, this is your prof.
Very hard marker. Although gives feedback and answers emails, it is almost impossible to get a good mark here. (Took Online)
Gives very vague instructions and feedback for assignments. Not the greatest at helping first year students learn how to writer properly as he is too harsh and doesn't explain well enough. He also is known to call your opinion or interpretation wrong, which I was not expecting. Try to avoid for first year courses.
He grades super tough, his assignments are hard and he gives vague instructions, and his feedback is also very vague. Overall would not recommend as its almost impossible to get a good grade In this course with him as professor
Dr. Nolan is not a good prof. His notes were sparse and taught me very little on any of the short stories covered. His assignments were often unclear and unorthodox. His grading is harsh and feedback usually unhelpful, suggesting things such as summarizing the work more--which other profs advise against doing.
English has never been my strong-suit but I've always managed to get good marks. This was something else. Never clear on what he expected of our work. The midterm essay prompt was the vaguest I've ever had to work with, topped only by the final. His feedback, if any, was of no use. Your first grade basically determines what your final grade will be
Nolan gives you a good understanding of the background of any work you study with him. I had him for 1101 a few years ago, and now having him again for 2000, and in both courses, he takes the time to make sure you're understanding it. He is a tough grader, but he is there to chat with if you want to improve.
This is my second class with Dr. Nolan, and I still believe he's a good lecturer and gives great feedback. However, I still think he has somewhat of a patrician aura where, mostly in out-of-class communications, it feels hard to relate to what he's saying. Despite what most people say though, I think he's a good grader.
Dr. Nolan definitely makes you work for your marks! That being said, he gives specific feedback on papers and is open to further discussing critiques if you ask him to. The readings for the course are very time-consuming; however, the papers he assigns do not require much writing at all. All of the books can be found online for free too :)
Dr. Nolan is a great professor with an approachable teaching style. However, he is a very tough grader. You will have to complete his assignments completely according to his instructions. I learned this the hard way when I strayed a bit off in the first few assignments. Otherwise, his explanation of the course material was easy to grasp.
Grading criteria was never specific. Has a very vague idea as to what he wants from students in midterm and final essay. Would not take again.
Ive taken a lot of English courses at mun and I get quite good grades in all of them but his courses, and Ive taken him twice. I just really dont know how people get more than a 70 from him, he definitely does not cut people any slack when grading.
worst prof I've ever had, he's really rude in his feedback and just rude in general. also in his feedback, all he does is pinpoint what you did wrong without telling you how to fix it. in his lectures, he only reads from the book and barely gives you detailed explanations on what to do, only does the bare minimum. worst prof ever.
Found he gave little to no guidance on assignments. Was rude when emailed about an assignment, once told the class that we were the lowest level of English hes taught. Not a good pick if hes your first semester English prof, seems like you need some prior skills in university written to learn properly from him.
Toughest grader in the entire department. Doesn't give proper instructions or teach rather criticize high- school education and say random info about the topics. Could've taught us instead of criticizing what we learnt in highschool.
In my opinion, he is a bit underrated: As you can see in other reviews about this professor, he is a tough grader; but in his feedbacks he will give you fair reasons for every single mark he deducts from your assignments, so you cannot complain that he is skinflint about grades - at most, he will make you hate your own lack of English skills.
Very interesting with his in-class lectures. He is an extremely trough grader. I've always been an exceptional student, but I was lucky to get above 75 on the essays, and out of class assignments. That being said, he provided detailed feedback on what needed to be fixed. I've always been a 4.0 student, but I struggled to maintain this in his class.
By far, the hardest class I have ever taken. Nolan is not personable and does not try to empathize with students. Feedback was limited and often quite rude. While I enjoyed listening to his lectures and he was funny at times, he often missed the mark by giving sufficient time for in-class papers and did not thoroughly explain assignments.
Just avoid this man at all costs, he is truly the worst professor I have ever had. He is so rude and awful and could not care less if his students pass/fail. He doesn't even teach, he just reads short stories every single class, then provides 0 guidelines for assignments!!! Oh and you get 50 minutes to write a 6 page in-class essay.
Tough grader, gives in class essays, no practice questions or study guides. Doesn’t even really teach the material, he just reads from the book and makes rambling, typically unhelpful comments. Quite rude with feedback and has very high expectations. Expects too much prior/historical knowledge for a 2000 level English course.
I must say that Dr. Nolan's classes are interesting. He does his best to explain the material and gives excellent feedback. He is a harsh grader, but he will explain why he deducts your marks. To do well in this course, you need to put lots of effort into your essay. Understanding what Dr. Nolan wants to see in your essays is key to doing well.
By far the worst prof I've ever had. He is so incredibly biased when grading. All of my papers were objectively good papers, but if he just fundamentally disagrees with your opinion he marks you horribly. I was so close to failing out of engineering because of this guy just because he doesn't like me. It was a miracle that I passed
I think Dr Nolan is a bit underrated. If you're looking for an easy A, he is not the prof for you. However, even though he doesn't use rubrics, he gives excellent feedback on everything. He is hilarious and his lectures were super interesting, even for a non-arts major like me. He allowed revisions for the first two essays after receiving feedback.
Dr Nolan is a great prof if you are good at grammar. I found his class hard because I'm not the strongest in my writing. He comes off kind of ignorant but at the same time is very funny. I would not take his class again.
If you are just doing for credit, do not take this prof. Very tough grader, I did not receive over a 60 on any essays, even when listening to all the feedback, he always finds more problems. English was made way more difficult than it had to be, and is now weighing down my average.
He knows a lot about his topics, and his lectures are super engaging. However, he was not always clear on what one could do to receive a better mark, and even after correcting and employing his feedback, my grades stayed the same. There was no grade improvement over the semester despite the fact that I always applied his feedback to my essays.
Michael Nolan provided no notes for the lectures, he strictly talked with nothing on the screen or chalk board for notes. He expected you to complete in class, non open book essays even though we had no notes in class or on the course shell. I ended up dropping the course and taking it with a different professor. AVOID NOLAN IF AT ALL POSSIBLE
Professor Nolan never gives a rubric for any assignments to complete. There are no notes for lectures at all. He gives horrible feedback, not explaining how to fix your 'errors' or why they were even an issue in the first place, and even with revisions, he doesn't change the grade. You're expected to handwrite a 5 page essay in class in 50 minutes
Although he was very funny, he was an awful grader. No matter if you have a good essay or a bad essay, you will get a 65. You put 4 extra hours into that one essay to get your mark up because your GPA will go down because of this one class? Too bad. You're getting a 65.
Michael Nolan is a well-spoken and interesting professor who certainly had entertaining lectures. Despite this, the work expected in his course is not expected in any other current Memorial University courses, in-class essays (sometimes 2) in 50 minutes. I found his grading generous considering I was unable to write very well in the allotted time.
The course was great, was hard to write essays in person, but was very understanding. I would defiantly take a course with him again, very funny to listen to him explain the stories from his point of view:)
Humour does little to no help to your failing grade. Avoid.
Some students might find his low-tech teaching style intimidating (all handwritten essays) but the papers themselves aren't too hard as long as you make sure to read the material. Lots of dry, sarcastic, and sometimes dark humor. If that's your style, I strongly recommend. Every lecture is comedic and engaging.
Me and a friend both had Micheal Nolan for English 1090, he grades incredibly hard, loves to brag that the highest mark you will get in his course is a 75%, is often rude if he asks a question and you get it wrong, makes fun of previous education and students, he once yelled profanities at a student for asking a question to her peers etc beware!
Worst prof I've ever had. I dropped his course he was so painful to listen to. He doesn't even teach anything and yells profanities at his students when they ask questions to friends. Avoid this man at all costs.
Dr. Michael Nolan is a very tough grader, not sure if it is him or the course but it was so bad, I will never be taking another course with him. For me, it was so bad that if I had to take a course with him to finish my degree I'd wait till someone else taught the course, avoid him as a professor unless you really wanna be challenged.
Honestly didn't teach much, was complaining most of the times about the broken high school education system in NL. Very tough grader.
He's a great prof if you can write exactly how he likes, if you're an average essay writter you'll only get a 60. Marks very very hard.
Depending on your humor will depend how much you like him as a teacher. as an average essay writer myself, I didn't acquire a mark above a 65. His writing is impossible to read so understanding feedback is difficult while the feedback isn't overly helpful either. Tells you not to write about anything that you were taught in high school. avoid him.
Yes he is a very tough grader, but I loved him. He is hilarious, his classes are engaging. His classes never bored me, I even signed up to have him again next semester
He's definitely a funny prof and his lectures are never boring. He always encourages questions on the readings and explains each reading very thoroughly. He's a tough grader though and looks for specific things in peoples papers, other then that he's great
Professor Nolan's class is quite challenging, but using resources like unstuckstudy ai and staying engaged can help. He has a tough grading system, but his humor and teaching style work for some students. Prepare to put in the effort to succeed.
Dr. Nolan was so funny and his lectures were wonderful! He's a wonderful prof, and I enjoyed taking his class. I found his grading to be quite tough, but he did give great feedback!
Never take his class. He calls on people and screams if students are talking. Makes comments when people go to the bathroom. Not helpful at all, gives 3 days notice to read an entire book and will give u a 60% no matter how good your essay/ quiz is done. Makes students feels less than because his biggest accomplishment is teaching english 1090
Trust me, do whatever you can to avoid this guy. He finds joy in giving people low marks and no matter who you are I highly doubt you'd be able to pull off a 70. Thinks he's funny but he's just weird, tough grader who will take 40% off for forgetting a comma.
i would take again for his personality but his grading is a turn away. He's a very tough grader and is not a very online person. He tests and uses two novels to grade on, along with an online Elizabethan play, and a sonnet unit. he wants you to understand the content being done and does an amazing job at explaining everything.
Professor Nolan is a funny guy in class, the discussions are entertaining to participate in. However, he grades very harshly, unless you're a generational writing talent, don't expect much higher than a 60-70 on any of your essays. The essays are also the only form of evaluation besides a couple quizzes which are worth much less. Mixed bag overall.
Horrible grading. I haven't met a person that has higher then an 80 in his class. He spends more time talking about the failed high-school education system then he does actually teaching. His feedback is illegible and he has a god complex. He gives reading quizzes and then spends another two weeks reading over the same thing you have already read.
Never taking a course with him again. His writing demands are impossible to meet, if your work is not written exactly the way he wants it you will get a 50. Did not receive a grade over a 65 on any of my essays. He said it himself he never accords a mark over an 80 to any of his students. It's not worth it, your average will be a 65. Good luck.
Can be quite funny however he tends to be a bit overwhelming. Jumps from something we are reading to random stories quite quickly and can be a bit all over the place. He is a very tough grader but gives good feed back and offered a grade booster. Definitely don't recommend if you aren't willing to put in the work however he isn't the worst I've had
avoid at all costs, complains about students every class, grading style is ridiculous and unclear. Good luck getting above a 70 with this man.
He marks very hard and participation in class is mandatory or he will yell profanities at the class until someone speaks. I love English and he ruined the course for me completely.
He is actually hilarious and a great person! Catch him in a conversation outside of class and you will see what I mean. His sarcastic humor is not for everyone though. I will say he is a VERY tough grader! If you usually get 80-85%, expect 65-70%. However, he did give 1 re-write on essay 1, and he posts audio for each reading! I did like his class!
He seems fairly easygoing and all the quizzes were easy as long as you read the material. Essays weren't graded too harshly either.
He was very easy to get along with and fairly easygoing. Quizzes were pretty easy if you read the material and essays were generally pretty reasonable, as long as you can stick to his requirements you can get a pretty good grade. His writing is downright illegible so the feedback on essays is essentially worthless.
a funny guy with good lectures. the readings were short and interesting. he reads the entire reading in class and goes in depth, but it's best to read them beforehand to get the most out of his class. mostly grades on in class essays and only the first one can be revised out of class. as long as u pay attention, the answers are pretty obvious.
Absolutely avoid if you can, he is so disorganized and unclear in what he wants and is a very tough grader.
good luck getting atleast a 60 in this course he's thinks people don't have any other courses
He is a tough greater for sure but this lectures will give u a lot. Only thing u need to do is to attend them and u should be fine.
If you gotta do ENGL 2001 and already have a heavy course-load, go for Nolan. Otherwise, stay away. Course consists of 4 demand essays and a simple annotated bibliography. Not hard work. HOWEVER, he grades roughly 10 harder than other profs, and you need to regurgitate what he says about the readings. Show up to lectures or fail, basically.
Dr. Nolan is a very tough grade and very rude. Save yourself and pick another prof......please.
He was ok at the beginning of the semester but switched up towards the end. Blatantly rude and arrogant. Can't really tell if he actually wants to be there. Does not put it out there that he wants you to do well; he just ridicules the class for not understanding the guidelines (which he contradicts 24/7). You will hardly ever get above a 65!
Course was 1192, option wasn't there. Overall pretty funny guy, grades really hard. Make sure grammar is perfect otherwise expect a 65-70. For content quizzes you really need to read the book otherwise you won't do well. You don't need to show up but should go to class when he reviews the book as he gives hints for essay topics.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! A very cruel person. Yells profanities, makes fun of students in class for just asking normal questions or sitting there. On top of this, had no grading rubric, no feedback on any papers and would make fun of the classes performance rather than help. Made disturbing/inappropriate sexual comments. Cannot believe he this job.
The worst professor I've ever had the displeasure of having. I had never considered myself a fantastic writer, but this man destroyed my self-confidence and made coming to class a nightmare. Picky grader, will belittle you, will shout at the entire class if desired class participation is not met. Avoid at all cost!
Read the material in class like a grade school teacher. Very rude to students and contradicts himself constantly. Never taking a course from him again.
Dr. Nolan is just an odd professor to rate. He is pretty forgiving in terms of missed assessments, but he does not care about his students. He is very bland, kind of rude, and his expectations for a 2000 level course is ridiculous. Do not take him for a 1000 or 2000 level course, you should be getting 80+ and he'll at best give you a 65...
AVOID! Nolan is unreal, he grades so oddly, make sure your grammar is exact along with punctuation. He tends to ramble about every little thing besides english.
this man is evil.
