Has a big ego, but deserves it: he's brilliant.
very smart but he's nuts.
a very arrogant man. damn those neo-platonists!

Great teacher in the tradition of Leo Strauss.
A+ prof , great stories
Thought provoking and inspirational classes
Egoistic, but a good, smart teacher!
A great teacher; he is clear, insightful, and exciting

Arrogant, narrow-minded, not an original thought in his head.

He is a brilliant man. Nuff said.

Acts like he's the only person in the room who knows anything. Hates giving A's.

For those who think young
Awesome guy, good teacher.... hard class, but it was great
An arrogant recluse but was able to make sense out of difficult material.

You'll do fine as long as you can spit back exactly what he says in lecture, no thought required (don't bother doing the reading). Has a bad habit of dating female students though.
Doesn't care what anyone else has to say, because if it's not what he thinks, it's wrong.
Be there and listen . . . then spit it all back on the test. He is an amusing guy though! Very smart.
This class was sooo dull. Michael Palmer just goes on and on, and I rarely get anything out of it. Don't get a class with this guy. He thinks he is the coolest professor out there. He thinks he is all independent and cool. BIG NOT.
This guy is a freak and makes you feel like an idiot. Plus, the skeeve man recently married his 19 year old student. On the plus side, he doesn't bother looking at your work, just checks off that you did. I believe everyone in my class got at worst a B.
boring!!!
Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you If you're young at heart For it's hard, you will find, to be narrow of mind If you're young at heart
Smartest man I've ever met, great insights. I learned a lot.
Pretty adept at clarifying complex theories and teachings. Strange dude though.
Take notes to make sense of the readings. He's a little weird and aloof. Big chested girls sit in front.
He is a first-rate professor, heads and shoulders above anyone else in the Political Science department. If you go to UMaine, you won't get the most for your money if you don't take a class from him. His teaching demands respect.
He makes valid points that often don't follow the popular interpritation of the text, and is able to prove his point. The best umaine has to offer for lectures in the classroom, but try to ignore his personal life

Yeah, so he's a sketchy old man. Being a female really helps your grade!
Brillant man, Great Teacher, Loved listeding to him speak(both on and off topic), Sketchy Character outside of class
Sketchy doesn't even begin to describe this guy. ****, middle-aged, self-absorbed prof who likes them young (look at his wife) and thinks he's God's gift to the female population. Oh, and he's NEVER wrong. Teaching good/poor, depending on subject.
Very strange man. after 3 classes he still didn't know my name and these were small honors classes!!
Very smart man. has some different views on life and although I don't agree on some of them, it is still very interesting to hear his . I enjoyed his class VERY much.

For all the bad rap he gets, noone really knows him well enough to merit half the things they say about him. Despite some of his controversial standpoints, he is an awesome professor.
He's a very good professor, and I recommend him highly.

This professor is the worst I have ever had at the University of Maine. He readily strays from the topic and doesn't give students the information to succeed in his class. I learned nothing of importance at all in this class, other than the fact that professors can arbitrarily come up with grades.
A brilliant man. He'll keep your attention for an entire class. If you're interested in philosophy Palmer is your guy
Palmer is one of the most intellegent people I have ever met. He leaves your relationship with him in your hands. Go to his office hours. He's very interesting. Ignore his personal life.
Not taking into account his personal life, this is one of the best professors I've ever encountered. His teaching style makes otherwise tedious material engaging. POS 201 was one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken and that's saying a lot considering the subject matter.
I take every class this professor offers. I am a philosophy major and this professor teaches philosophy better than the philosophy department. He rubs some people the wrong way but take a class before you judge. Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Makes me want to stay in school 4 ever.
Palmer has spent thirty-five years studying the history of philosphy: nearly all the great philosophers from Presocratics to Heidegger; he thinks completely outside the box. And you expect him to live his like within the confines of American middle-class values? Wake up and smell the coffee.
Honestly I don't really know why I like this guy so much, but I really do. He is very smart and a very good teacher. He is interesting and engaging.
One of the worst professors I have ever met. He dictated class discussion and was not open to other opinions. He too often went on long tangents and personal rants that were inappropriate for the classroom. I didn't learn anything from him, nor did I appreciate his anti-feminist egotistical attitude
I disagree with almost all of Palmers political and social views, but that's cool, becuase he's funny. I've taken a bunch of his classes and he was always interesting, helpful and just generally a fun teacher. I learned a lot from him.
Stay away from this professor and his class, he is more interested in your body than your mind...

He hates the modern world for good reason and anyone who attacks him for his politics has probably never spoken to him at length. He studied under Bloom so a rehash of those arguments is expected and where else can you here a Straussian perspective on a campus dominated by Marxists? There should be class in the sociology dept. on his personal life.

This man is a genius, hands down the smartest person on campus. Classes are always informative and entertaining, definitely worth attending. People don't like him because he tells it like it is and doesn't worry about "political correctness", and some people can't deal with that. Definitely take any classes you can with him, he's brilliant
Hes very entertaining and has a very cynical sense of humor, brilliant, I learned A LOT about all the books he assigned, good teaching style only drawback is he tends to go off on tangants and sometimes it is hard to figure out what his point is- but his classes are absoluely worth taking- i reccommend him.
The lack of syllabus really annoyed me since I like planning ahead. He says at the very beginning that your grade is based on however he feels you did not just your actual test grades so it's hard to know how you're doing in the class. Interesting but also boring at the same time. Almost always late for class.
If the true meaning of college is to gain insight into the meaing of the world around us then Palmer's classes should be required.
A very arrogant man, always making eye-contacts with female students, made me very uncomfortable. Avoid him...
Don't bother with this professor, he is always late for class and talks about himself all the time..
Palmer is a modern-day Socrates, and he's not one of those "the truth is whatever you want it to be" kind of teachers. He's read EVERYTHING, and he knows his stuff inside and out, so I value his opinion quite highly. Class frequently gets off-topic because he feels compelled to explain things not relevant to class if he thinks they're important.

This man is a genius & his lectures are bar none. All his classes are recommended for those that care about a liberal education & learning how to truly think for themselves. For all those out there commenting on his PERSONAL behavior - IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! In fact, you're the audience that most needs to take his classes & open your minds.

Arguably, one of the smartest men on this campus. However, he lacks social skills to effectively communicate his ideas to student. At the same time he probably knows this and doesn't care because he has tenure (which he announced at the beginning of my first class with him) so he can't loose his job. His lectures are all shock value.
Palmer definitely knows his stuff. He cares about you as s student, whether you believe it or not. Not all that interesting of a class, unless you are interested in Plato's Republic. I thought it was going to be something different, but it definitely has its worthwhile moments.
Just coming to his class will give you a minimum of B. More interested in checking out the women in his class than the subject he is talking about..

Kind of an arrogant guy. Sweet clothes though. He tends to be very egocentric so unless you favorite subject is him or socrates then your in trouble. That being said he's a smart guy, but don't let yourself believe that it automatically makes him a good teacher. He tends to not answer questions or feel the need to explain himself.

Michael Palmer was hands down one of the worst professors I've ever had! Not only does he go on random rants, which makes it hard to sort out the important information from the ****, he also is a very biased and arrogant ass. He never writes notes on the board nor does he post notes or study guides, making it very hard to do his essays. AVOID!!
palmer is one of the most arrogant ( not to sound repetitive of others comments) professors I've ever come across. That being said, from the first day of class I enjoyed him as a professor. Though I find it hard to force myself to go to these sometimes pointless lectures I do get a lot of moral (I suppose you could say) insight and comedic relief.
He is the best prof. we have in the Political Science Department and at the University of Maine. Samrt and funny and really cares about students. Go to his office hours...that is where it is at.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. it's online and palmer doesn't grade anything himself. it all goes to his T.A. who doesn't grade based on content. The class is absolutely pointless.
Response to previous post: He doesn't teach POS 203. Perhaps you are confusing with Ken Palmer (same last name)?
I liked him enough to take his 112 class too. He's very smart, but sometimes too smart. He gets so off topic it's amazing. Once started a sentence about poetry and touched on racism, 18th century females in Britain, bacon, The Village People's YMCA, emphysema, movies and ended the class by drawing a map to explain why 300 is the worst movie ever.
Contrary to what many who post on here say, Palmer's so-called "intelligence" is really just smoke and mirrors. He has some clever insights and quips, but they are pieces of nonsense that he recycles in ever class. His Introduction to Political Theory class should be called, "Introduction to Palmer's Egocentric Views."
Palmer is extremely knowledgeable in the subjects he teaches, and his in-class essay exams are extremely reasonable to be successful on. It is absolutely important to go to every class because he pretty much outlines the whole readings and blatantly alludes to what material is important to study for the in-class essays.
Best damn professor the University of Maine's got. He speaks his mind and doesn't refrain from being honest. The best part is he makes you think, not in the typical manner but out side the box. More professors should be like him.
The class was at times fairly interesting, but he does become sidetracked more often than is appropriate. He always is clear to say that everything he says is, "pertinent to political theory", but at times it is hard to see the significance. Fine class, engaging professor.
Arrogant. Self Centered. Stuck on himself. If I take the time to go to class he should at least show up on time. Never explains anything relevant. Grading is extremely incomprehensible. Wont give grades higher than a C for most people. I tried giving him a chance but I just found myself disliking him and his absurdity more and more.
I'm not sure what would make one believe Mr. Palmer to be arrogant, if anything, he is self-deprecating and humble. His lectures are tangential, but amusing he is honest and certainly not PC. My only complaint (and I've been doing poorly) is that he does not place more emphasis on important points than on unimportant ones which makes studying hard
Palmer is definitely out there but the guys brilliant. His classes are definitely worth attending. Must go into the course with an open mind. Took his class 1st semester freshman year and Plato was a little over my head but If you meet with him the guy will work with you for hours and those are even more interesting than class.
Feels as though teaching an into course is beneath him. Rants a lot and goes off on hour long tangents about his medical problems and love life. Not a class you can skate by in. You can do well, but you really have to work for it. The subject is dry and so is Plato's Republic.
I will admit, going into this class I was nervous. You always hear rumors about Palmer and how bad he is. But please, give it a chance and go in with an open head. The man is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. If you seriously want to study ethics or philosophy his class is well worth any hardship you may face.
We were only graded on 3 in class essays. 2 of which he either showed up late for or not at all. The topics of those essays were what came to his mind first as he walked in the room. Very high on himself. Claimed he could have been the Prime Minister of Canada but decided to be a professor at UMO instead? Lied all the time and never made any sense.
He might have a great mind for theory, but the class was not worth my time. He spent more time trying to hit on the girls in my class than focusing on the book, and I felt that his tests were impossible to get anything higher than a C without kissing up to him. His lectures are abstract, and the 3 in-class essays don't seem focused enough.
If you do not care about the way you are treated as a person, but like to write short papers, his seminar is for you. Michael Palmer constantly makes comments that are degrading and disrespectful, especially to women. I cannot stand him as a person, but he does know his stuff and he isn't a particularly harsh grader
2nd class with Palmer. I didn't do so great in the first one so I took this as a challenge. I read the material thoroughly as well as did outside research on the subject matter. I attended every class and took thorough notes for a disabled student. On my first in class essay he gave me a C+. I felt cheated and he also seems to look down on women.
Failed to appear for our tests and was constantly late to class, then complained that we failed to understand the meaning of justice when we reported him. He also believes that women are incapable of writing serious philosophy. A class on political theory was reduced to just a reading of Plato's Republic. Very high grading standards; challenging.
This guy seems to know Plato's Republic well, but his lectures were soooooo bad. He once spent half a lecture telling us all about his former alcoholism. Several times in class he caught us looking at the clock and then back at him because we all just wanted to get out of there. Seriously, either skip this class or take it with another professor.
Palmer comes across as disinterested and lazy. You basically have to restate exactly what he has said in class on your essays or you get a C. Often speaks at length about things that are unrelated to subject. Rob Glover teaches a summer session, if you're actually interested in learning something enroll in that section.
For those of you signing up for spring Honors 112, only take it w/ Palmer if you can stand to listen to rants (off-topic, too personal, and often offensive) and want low workload. One page essay a week, but no prompt and extremely vague. Grading is incomprehensible. He at least tries to be personable? Good luck.
