This class is by no means easy, but he makes the class fun. If you go to most of the lectures, do the readings, and study then you should be fine.
He definitely makes this class interesting, but he is probably one of the hardest psych 101 teachers. Study and go to lectures and you'll be good. He's worth it even though it might be a little harder...you learn a lot!
I enjoyed this class, and we went through the material at a fast pace. The tests were exactly as the teacher said they would be, and there was lots of opportunity for extra credit.
he is a real good teacher..very helpful..his lectures are entertaining and his exams are fair
He made psuchology fun and interesting. He also taught straight from the book because he wrote it. Tests could be hard because he could test you on every detail, since he knew what was in the book by heart. Great guy, very inspirational.

I think he's awesome!
Don't waste your time going to class, especially if it's early in the morning! The tests come straight through the book, and his lectures are literally word for word from the book, too (he wrote it)...easy class if you read...nice guy
Cool, fun class to take for freshmen.
very nice man. good professor. clear. helpful. intelligent. no complaints, but he is definitely the hardest psych 101 teacher of them all. read your texts, take notes, and show up for lectures and youll be fine
Good lecturer, ok book, medium hard tests. He makes psychology interesting, but he definitly is the hardest psych teacher, which most people want to take psych 101 because it is suppose to be easy and boost their GPA. Passer is a good guy though and wants you to learn. And best of all you get a class off every other week about!
Very fun class and intertesting. Loved his teaching style because it wasn't on power point.
pretty easy class, not too hard to do well if you study and read. he's got TA's who have review sessions that are helpful if you learn that way. he makes lecture more interesting than most and he shows videos so its not always lecture.
His lectures were interesting and he always made the subject interesting. Was enthusiastic about teaching and wanted you to learn the material.
He makes the class amazing. I thought it would be boring because he wrote the book, and I've heard those are the worst, but his class was absolutely amazing! So fun.
He was very helpful and always willing to answer my questions, no matter what time or how big the class.
very thorough, very intelligent. his psych 101 is probably a rude awakening for freshman but if you find someone with old tests, your life will be a million times easier. psych 209 is pretty hard, but overall i definitely recommend him. learned a lot from his classes, particularly 101.
He is a great professor and his class is the easiest in comparision to the other professors!
Decent professor.
Very animated
What a dog and pony show! He clearly loves being a performer, though I have my doubts about his teaching. And why, in a giant lecture hall with all the tech at his fingertips, doesn't he have his overheads pre-written, or better yet, typed out in Powerpoint? Why spend so much time watching him write out his points on ancient overhead machines?
really interesting and organized
i really like him as a lecturer- its never boring. if you just read the book well and copy his notes the exams are not bad at all.
He is very funny and only sometimes the lectures are boring. Lots of movie clips that make it interesting and the tests are not too bad but you have to read the book because he doesn't teach everything in lecture!
Passer is a good teacher. His lectures are either really exciting or boring as hell. He is a showboater but he knows his stuff too. STUDY FOR THE DAMN MIDTERMS, if you do bad on one midterm you're screwed for the rest of the quarter. and make sure you read every chapter when its assigned.
The class seems super easy due to the lack of homework...until you take your first mid-term and bomb because you didn't study. Don't take Dr. Passer's laid-back attitude for granted. You still need to study. But he is an awesome professor. Engaging and interesting.
Passer is an excellent professor. He's well organized, really intelligent and funny. His lectures are so much fun and interesting (only occasionally are they boring due to nature of the subject). Make sure you read all of the assigned chapters in addition to attending lecture to do very well on the exams, even if you think you're smart.
Compared to other psych classes Passer's is the easiest. He wrote the textbook so his lectures were often word for word what was written in the book. Really nice and good natured. Just read the book and get the notes if you miss and you'll be fine. Well organized with study guides, practice exams, and quick grading.
Mr Passer was one of my most memorable professors. An excellent teacher, a wonderful lecturer. It isn't easy to teach a 101 course with 500 students - but I feel he catered it perfectly to both beginning Psych majors and non-majors alike. He turned me onto Jung - and I'm not even a psych major.
This class could easily be boring, but Dr. Passer made his lectures interesting and fun. I might even say this class was a bit challenging. If you take this class, READ THE TEXTBOOK. His tests aren't super hard, but lot of questions are from the text. Read the book, attend lecture, and you're bound to get a good grade.
Really easy class!!!!! All his lectures are based on his book. If you go to his lectures and read the book you should be fine. Also find someone with the past exams and study off of them for the exams. His exams don't really change that much.
Gotta be one of my favorite profs! Really smart, funny, and helpful. He'll do whatever it takes to make sure that his students understand the topics. Loved every aspect of the class! My major is not psychology, but his class made me love the field!
Passer is a great lecturer, and is really helpful if you go see him in person. His exams are crystal clear, but beware - if you didn't go to lecture, the exams WILL be hard. Otherwise, this is a great class!
I did not like Passer's class. He wrote the textbook, and the book sucks. It goes on and on and says very little for how long it is, but you have to memorize everything in it to do well on the tests. If you do, you'll get an A. I find his lectures mildly entertaining but completely useless.
Multiple Choice tests are give or take. You can do well if you read and selectively attend lecture. The EC helps as well. Passer is approachable and knows his stuff. He cares about the students and he uses great examples in lecture.
Passer does a pretty good job making bland subjects interesting with his great examples and lectures. The book helps a fair amount. The test were Passer tests and were generally hit and miss. One test you will do well and another do worse. The writing and "lab" stuff was pretty easy. I never really attended lab but only once in awhile. The
Lectures don't cover as much as they should, but he makes them interesting in my opinion. The tests are easy if you study and really know your stuff, but if you don't, you're screwed. The extra credit really helps.
Passer's enthusiasm for psychology is infectious. Great teacher, funny comments, good demonstrations. Concise and cordial. Take classes by him!
do not take psych 101. this is where passer makes his money. freshman come in buy his 100 dollar text book, which changes each year, thus limited used available, then he reads from the book (basically) in lectures. there is only a need to attend because he adds in random video clips which he questions later in midterms. Bad class, ok prof.
He doesn't teach an 4.0 class, if you want to get easy credit. This is not the class for you. BUT IF YOU WANT TO LEARN about PSYCH. Passer is the one. I'm actually an engineering major, but I LOVED this class. He can answer every question in class, and he does demonstrations that would get the students fired up.
Definitely my fav prof so far. Lecture is interesting, covers a lot of material, so make sure to read the book (which he co-writes and is almost as interesting as lecture). Easy 4.0 as long as you put in the effort. Really nice guy, obviously loves teaching, connects very well even in a huge 500 student lecture.
Passer is awesome! His class is by far my favorite this quarter. He's a wonderful lecturer, really gets the 500-student class engaged. He's a genuinely nice guy who really cares about the students and the subject. Class isn't too difficult as long as you do the reading and pay attention in lecture. Exams are straightforward. I recommend him!
Definitely old school. Frustrating that class is so large. Bad at using technology- always messes up computer, microphone and doesn't even use powerpoint- still writing out notes on overhead, which takes FOREVER. Since it's an intro class, topics are widespread, making it difficult to be engaged at all. Not a fave class.
Passer was a great teacher. Pretty entertaining, makes the subject very interesting, and most of all is very clear and concise with lectures. He doesn't leave any guessing with what you need to know for the exam. Highly recommended.
Passer is a great lecturer! In a class of more than 300 he is still able to keep the class engaged. Lecture is used for examples, videos and demonstrations to supplement the text material. very interesting class! Getting an A is doable-just stay on top of the readings and attend lecture!
Had for intro psych and research psych... an amazing professor! You learn so much from his lectures!
He has a podcast on his website so if you miss a day or don't want to go to class, you don't miss that much. Grade consists of three 40 MC question tests (including final), some easy online activities, and some psych research you can participate in. Lectures cover about 60% of test material.
Very clear and helpful. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There's no quiz sections so it's the only time you'll get an answer. DO THE READING. He covers most in class, but there's almost no homework so the reading is very important. Overall, very good professor, but too much emphasis on the text book...which he wrote.
very interesting and straight from the text. still, it's necessary to go to lecture since he sometimes gives examples that aren't in the text which he puts on the test. as long as you read the book and do the extra credit, its easy to 4.0!
Excellent professor, strongly recommend him. Also, do the extra credit.
If it weren't for Michael Passer, this class would be great for naps. HE, however, makes it somewhat interesting. Is an awesome professor, and makes concepts crystal clear. Also gives practice q's for exams in order for you to estimate the amount you understand. Fair grader as well. Qz sections sometimes helpful.
So some people were telling me that his nickname was "No Passing Passer" which freaked the heck out of me, but I had NOTHING to worry about. He's a sweet man who's into cartoons, and he will frequently use them to show us a theory. Tests are pretty specific, but as long as you come to class and listen to his examples, it's easy. highly recommend
This is THE class to take and Passer's THE prof to take it with. As ppl have mentioned, he's got a good sense of humor and makes good use of visuals to help explain concepts. Read the textbook. There are questions on the exam only based on the textbook. GO TO LECTURE. Although he posts lectures online, being in the class is more fun.
I really liked the class, Dr. Passer makes lectures interesting. As long as you put in the effort to study and read the readings, you will 4.0 the class!
Class is easy, go to lectures and read the chapters. Use study files, because he repeats a ton of his questions from past quarters. Do the 6 hours of extra credit and you will easily get an A
He was a great prof with a decent sense of humor. I definitely recommend going to class because I think his lecture is more clear than his online notes. Read the book!! When I took the class we used a textbook that he wrote and there were a lot of questions out of it. I recommend taking notes on it or making a studyguide or something. Fun class
Very likeable teacher. Speaks clearly. I like how he doesn't have slides but writes along w/ us. I wish someone had told me how important it was to READ THE BOOK! He has podcasts of class online. He is very detailed & picky in hw instructions; make sure to read ALL of them carefully. Don't let the hw amount distract you from the readings as well.
This class is boring, but required for psych majors. The tests are easy as long as your do the reading. I never went to lecture and never got less than an 87% on the test. What is stupid is that he weights homework assignments the same as tests and grades extremely hard, so homework can screw your overall grade.
The topics in this class are extremely boring but Professer Passer usually makes class fairly entertaining with critical thinking exercises and lots of examples. Tests are pretty easy but you should still study because every little point matters in this class!
He is very organized and his expectations are pretty clear. The content can be boring for non-majors. Definitely not a class to take "for fun". The tests are clear-cut and overall the class is reasonable, but make sure you read the textbook! Sometimes it explains concepts better than the prof does. And get used to deciphering his handwriting.
Definitely learned a lot in this class, still today, after having taken it 2 quarters ago. 3 tests, each 40 multiple choice questions, no test takes more than 45 min or so. Lectures are somewhat boring but very helpful. READ THE BOOK and GO TO CLASS, it's very straightforward what to take notes on and what to study for. No qz section. But good CLUE
Passer is a really intelligent and thoughtful man. The class is a little dry, but thorough and fairly interesting. The tests are fairly easy, but there is virtually no room for error. Miss one question on the 40-question multiple-choice test, and miss more than 0.1 on the 4.0 scale.
He's amazing! His lectures are always funny, witty and memorable. The videos he showed in class are very interesting. And 0.3 extra credit. I'd love to take this class again!
Passer is great at explaining his concepts thoroughly and clearly. He uses very interesting examples in class to explain his ideas. He influenced me to become a psych major by showing how Awesome psychology is as a field of study. Plus, 0.3 extra credit is available and easy to obtain by doing research experiments.
Passer is a great professor; he is interested in what he's teaching and is always expanding his knowlegde in the field. Any question you have, he'll answer it to the best of his ability and if he doesn't know the answer he'll most likely try to find it for the next day. Definitely a class to take no matter what your major.
Easy 4.0, just read/study. His lectures are straight from the book (which he wrote, it's an easy read), although there is a bit of info in lecture that isn't in the book. READ THE BOOK. Passer is funny and engages the class. He is very knowledgeable. Didn't end up liking the subject as much as I expected, but Passer was cool. Also, .3 extra credit.
He uses the textbook which he wrote, so if you study a bunch you should be good. I was a slacker and skipped class a lot, and as a result my grade wasn't stellar (3.4) but if you go to class and read the textbook you'll easily have a 4.0. He's an interesting teacher, but sometimes goes off on tangents. No quizzes in this class though :)
He is one of my favorite professors ever. He explained things very well, kept the class entertained, and was very helpful with questions. The class isn't difficult, as long as you read, and I thought the content was very interesting. I would definately recommend it. :)
As long as you go to class and keep up in the book, you will do better than I did. Interesting lectures but very difficult midterms.
huge lecture class, tests are ok but really easy with study files. the teacher is decent. fairly structured college class. not complaining too much
Great professor! Read the textbook and write down whatever he writes down on the overheads as those are usually very important notes, which could be asked on exams! Basically, if you read the textbook it should be very easy for you to get a 3.5 or above! He uses great examples while teaching that really help you comprehend the material!
Passer is great. He gives examples for all concepts he reviews in lectures. He offers practice exams which are EXACTLY like the exams he administers. In office hours he's friendly and very helpful. As long as the textbook is read it's easy to get a strong grade. Even his TA's are knowledgeable and pleasant.
Not sure where folks are getting this "easy" idea. HE comments on HIS website that the general average for his 1st test is a 1.5, and that 25% of students fail it. knowing that this isn't a curved class should tell you something. He is, however, an excellent lecturer; he's compelling and interesting. Just make sure you don't expect a high grade.
Read the book! He doesn't cover much, and a large majority of his exams consist of material from the textbook, not from lecture
Psych 101 was suppose to be interesting! However he did not teach us anything but wanted us to solely read the textbook which was poorly written( by him). DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM!
Very good class. I must stress you MUST read the book and be familiar with all the material assigned if you want to do well on the exams and get a good grade. If you're looking for a class you can get away with going to class and cramming the night before a midterm, you probably won't do great. Read the book and you will do fine!
This isn't a super easy 4.0. You must attend classes, although he offers a lot of extra credit.
He's definitely one of the most easy-going professor in lower level classes. I don't remember if I wrote a review for him. But he worths me crediting his teaching style and pace in lecture. Above-average guys should find his 209 slow paced and "okay i know all this yay". but on average, easy to follow. Grade boomer? hm.. i would say so
Dr.Passer was quite the bore. I found his lecture notes quite incomplete without ACTUALLY reading the book, which itself is quite unclear. Extra Credit helps but overall this class is taught much better by the other professors. SKIP it with Passer
Passer is pretty good at making boring material somewhat interesting. There isn't a ton covered in this class, and I didn't find the material that hard-much of it was very easy to understand. However, be careful in this class with homework- it is weighted the same as tests-so follow instructions & make an appointment with the psych writing center
Passer knew what he was talking about. Made relatively boring material interesting and easy to understand. The class was overall really easy. Did all the work, got a 4.0
Dull material, but he's nice and funny. Lots of research examples and interesting movies to make less boring. Read the book, use the Writing Center, go to lectures(!), and take the practice exams (very similar to the actual ones). Non-cumulative final. Weird grading scale (20% get 4.0 on exam, but can only miss 1-2 questions).
The content is quite boring but Passerâ??s a nice guy who is always willing to answer/clarify questions. Do read the text book and make sure you donâ??t get behind because some of the chapters are long and the material is a bit dry and it will be on the tests.
Definitely recommend taking his class! A very considerate teacher. His class is also very easy to take notes with. Simple outlines but he enhances it with examples which makes the materials very memorable. Just attend his lectures, copy notes, go to TA section, do practice exam and you will do fine on the test!
Passer is a nice guy, but the material is so dry that it's hard to pay attention. He tries to make it interesting though. Unfortunately, he has a really soothing voice that would instantly make me fall asleep so I would have to listen to his lectures a couple times. I didn't put much effort in this class but got a 3.3, but you can get a 4.0 easily.
Passer has obviously been teaching forever - he has his formula down pat, and it works perfectly. The information is clear, the tests are not difficult at all if you study a little. However, he has a very monotone voice and little personality - it's really easy to fall asleep in his class. Bewarned! I also had him for Psych 209 - same experience.
His class was one of the best I've taken, he knew what he was talking about and made me want to learn more. Most of all, the book he wrote was great! When I missed class I could just read the book and learn what I needed. Thank you Dr. Passer for getting me interested in the field of psychology
Very amicable, very organized! He co-authored the textbook so there's a nice coordination between lecture and textbook. This class is pretty easy because the tests are just straight up memorization and answers are often intuitive. If you're not interested in psych and you don't know how to memorize efficiently, you will not do well.
OK, psych 209 is a pretty dull class, but you have to take it sometime, & he's a great professor. He tries to make it interesting with comics, activities & cool examples. He has great sense of humor, is really nice & his grading is very fair.
Good class! Lots of fun!
Very nice
GREAT PROFESSOR
Passer makes this class so interesting and clear!! His lectures are mostly stories/scenarios which made it so much more fun. His past tests are SUPER helpful, pretty much the only reason I got a 4.0 in the class. Do the extra credit psych studies, helps your grade so much.
Read the text carefully and you'll 4.0 this class in your sleep. But you have to read the text.
Dr. Passer is a really great professor! He always make principles clear and brief. And he encourage students to apply knowledges in their own life. But make sure you read books before classes and tests.
LOTS, and LOTS of reading. If you want to get a good grade, attend lecture and READ. You get 0.3 extra credit if you do 6 hours of research for them, which is really nice. I ended up getting a 4.0 GPA. Tests are multiple choice.
GREAT TEACHER!! As long as you read text and notes, you will get 4.0!!
He has a monotone voice but the class is straight forward and easy. Just keep up with the readings and take notes. Though lecture isn't mandatory, I would recommend going because Passer puts questions on his tests that are only relevant to what is said in lecture. Do the extra credit pool for the + .3 gpa boost and you will get a 4.0.
The class is very easy and straightforward! Just do the readings and you'll be fine. Prof Passer is very helpful and he tries to integrate a lot examples to make concepts interesting. Highly recommend!
This class is easy but he is soooooooooo boring! He talks really slow and takes forever to explain really easy concepts. If you look at the lecture notes there are usually only 3 or 4 things that we learn in lecture but it takes 50 minutes because he is so slow! His examples are interesting but the way he presents things is so dull.
THE MOST INTERESTING CLASS EVER! THE TESTS ARE BASED ON THE BOOKS AND THINGS HE TAUGHT ON CLASS.
I absolutely loved Passer! He was very clear on his lectures and writes his notes on the board as he goes, so you can easily follow along. It's important to do the readings and pay attention to his lectures, but overall it's a fairly straightforward class, especially if you're interested in Psychology!
This guy knows what he's teaching extremely well. He knows how to explain a concept multiple ways to assure everyone understands it. It's difficult to make research psychology interesting as an introductory class, but he does! Read the book and may attention in class and you will do well on all the exams.
This class requires A LOT of reading! I found this course a lot more challenging than all of the other reviews on here. Lectures are very dry and boring. Keep up with the reading, study past exams, and take advantage of the extra credit!
Favorite class of my college career so far!
Great teacher overall. Very nice guy who is also hilarious, and very open to helping students if need be. The class I took, PSYCH 101, was super interesting and not too hard although in order to get a good grade, i.e. 3.5-4.0 you need to attend class, pay attention, and take notes. Reading the book isn't completely essential but will help immensely
I never went to class but still got a 4.0. Just read the chapters the weekend before each test and you'll ace the class.
Lectures were interesting, but he speaks slowly and that put me to sleep sometimes. However, with extra credit and tests that closely resemble past tests/practice tests, it was an easy 4.0. There was a lot of reading, but it was very helpful and interesting reading!! Great class!
Great professor. Textbook is used around the country in Psych 101 courses. Really knew his stuff. That being said, he did write the textbook so this is definitely a textbook intensive course. As long as you read the textbook (which, I'm not going to lie, is long and boring) and attend lecture you should be all set for a 4.0.
Don't be fooled by all the high reviews, this class isn't a cakewalk. If you're good with multiple choice exams, you're in luck. There is some opportunity for extra credit, but not enough to make a huge difference. Don't take this class if you have difficulty with multiple choice exams and textbook reading.
He wrote the textbook so he knows what he is talking about. Used daily examples in lectures and make things very easy to understand. Passer is awesome.
Great professor! Must read the book and pay attention in class to pass, but a very interesting class!
Look, this class is supposed to be an "easy 4.0" but it's definitely not unless you can memorize 160 pages of material for one exam. That's the worst part about the class. You have too much to memorize and it is NOT easy to get a 4.0. The tests are all based on the reading but there's a TON of reading for each test.
He was honestly a great teacher, but there was so much to memorize for his exams that you had to work your butt off reading. Do pay attention in class because most of the stuff on the exam was from things in class that he did talk about, and some were from the book that he didn't even mention in class. Overall, if u read the book, you'll be fine.
I love Passer. He is the sweetest guy. His lectures are very clear. I took 3 years of Psych in high school and I learned and understood more just from Passer's lectures than I did in all those 3 years. He loves what he teaches and is very knowledgeable. I respect him a lot and if you want an A in the class just do your readings on time.
Michael Passer is such a great professor. Although he moves very slower during lecture, he really knows what he is talking about. He kept me very entertained with his short-stories and little examples. He is actually really funny because he could never get the technology to work. However, he didn't let technology get in his way! Great class!
He is very fun to watch in class! He used clicker questions as (easy) pop quiz things. He is okay with students challenging an idea as long as they're respectful. He is not afraid to admit if he had made a mistake or things don't go just right. Very funny! The computer stopped working so he laid on the ground and was just done with the computer.
He gives lots of examples so you'll understand the content well The video he makes you watch are super interesting and he chooses studies that help you understand the content better. He's a nice and funny guy. He may move slow, but it's because he wants to make sure you learn the material.
Good.
The lecture's are fantastic, the book is necessary, and there will be content from both in his exams.
Tests are tough which makes you to read a lot. If you just take classes and do not read the whole book, you can not get good grades. Also watch every video he asked,it will be tested in test.
He's awesome
Class lectures were engaging and provided a clear outline for what would be on the test. It is very important to read the textbook as the lecture provides an outline of the material and the book gives specific details. Overall Passer was a great prof that clearly enjoys teaching. + Extra Credit can improve your grade by .3 GPA
His lectures are very informative and it's easy to tell that he cares about us. Do all the homework and watch every video because there are tests questions on them. Take advantage of the extra credit; it can boost your GPA by up to 0.3 grade points and will provide a buffer for those tests that make up a large chunk of your grade.
Very professional, knows his stuff. My favorite thing about him is he is very articulate and very clear. Compared to some of the other professors and lecturers I've had, I can tell this man is very experienced and operates on a very high level as an educator, and I'm sure as a psychologist as well.
He gives really engaging lectures with to-the-point Powerpoint slides. The topics he chooses are very interesting. To succeed, I recommend reading the textbook and testing yourself with Launchpad. There is a 0.3 GPA extra credit - do it. The tests are straightforward if you did the work. The clicker points are based on participation.
he is awesome
Dr. Passer is a pretty cool guy, I imagine my dad to be just like he is in about 20 years (dorky old white guy). However, it's obvious that he is VERY smart, and is passionate about his work. The material isn't the most interesting, but his examples make it better. At the very least outline the chapters or you'll bomb the tests.
Stupid grading system
Dr. Passer is very knowledgeable, and makes a boring subject more interesting. He is always around to help, and tests are very fair. You will learn a lot from him and get a good grade. TA matters!!
I went into this class expecting an easy A. However, the readings and review were extensive compared to what I expected. There is extra credit that really helps those who do poorly. Overall, I missed one point all quarter without the extra credit. Use old exams to study!!
I wish every professor was like Prof. Passer. His lectures were always entertaining and he seems to always find a way to engage his entire class. Hands down favorite class and professor. If you read the textbook and do the online activities the midterms/final easy. However, you really do have to read them.
Passer is really knowledgable and you can tell that he is well respected, however, his lectures are pretty bland from time to time. He adds some additional information, but the majority of the information you need on the test come from Launchpad and the textbook.
I really enjoyed Passer this quarter. His class is very reasonable and it's really interesting. The grading is very fair and there's extra credit as well. Do the extra credit because 0.3 becomes incredibly valuable at the end of the quarter. There's a good amount of reading. Test material comes from Launchpad, the textbook, and lecture.
Passer gives a very interesting and engaging lecture. The majority of your grade is your exam scores, so put a big importance on studying!
One of the few amazing professor there is in UW. His lecture are always interesting and entertaining. There is little to no hw due for this class but the test is pretty hard. You definitely need to read the book to get a B on any of his test. The great thing about this class is that any sign of improvements on the test really brings up your grade!
You must read. Not all things are covered in class because there isn't enough time. Go to class as well. You can get a +.3 GPA boost by doing 6 hours of extra credit. The professor is pretty good too and isn't boring.
He is a great professor and keeps the class interesting and upbeat. Lectures aren't mandatory but he does use the clicker for participation. There is plenty of extra credit available through studies and research but make sure to do as soon as possible as there are limited spots. I thought the class would be an easy A so I underestimated studying.
Passer is one of my favorite professors at UW. He made this extremely boring class actually interesting. Make sure you do the PollEverywhere questions/do good on the homework assignments. Final grade is determined by total points, not percent, so be aware.
Very easy class and makes psych fun. A great introductory class with good content. His slide have the bulk of what you need to know, but cement what you learn with the reading. Supplementary videos/material online that he does test you on (1-2 questions). Extra credit makes it so that almost everyone can get into the psych major.
He is the best professor I know till now. The lecture is well-organized and has lots of fun too. I even hope I could take that again. Actually there is a lot reading and comprehension, but you could get good grades if you pay attention.
Passer was a great professor and really cared about the subject. There is a lot of reading, but it is easy to spread out across a couple of days. There are clicker questions in class but you just need 80% of the points. Do the extra credit!!! You can get .3 added to your final grade by doing psych studies. Tests consist of old test questions.
The average grade for this class is a 2.6 with the extra credit and 80% overall grade.
I want to give Dr. Passer a really high rating but I can't because verage GPA for a 101 level class should not be a 2.6. The grading criteria is unclear and confusing because you don't really know where you stand after the midterms. I thought I had like a 3.7 and then I look and it says 2.6. I worked my butt off to get a B in this class. Not easy.
He isn't the most interesting of a lecturer, but his tests are all reused from previous ones. Do the extra credit. Very minimal homework that is extremely easy.
Tests are way too technical. You must remember EVERY single detail of lecture and in the textbook which is way too difficult and nearly impossible. You have to remember details that isn't relevant 3 years from now such as what does ___ stand for in the ABC Therapy model.. Average grade is a 2.7....
Technical class. All memorization, you have to remember basically everything
He was clear and interesting. I easily passed the class and all I did was make a vocab list from the definitions in the book margins, did the end of chapter quizzes/reviews and the web assign end of chapter quizzes. All the questions on the exam came from there almost word for word. Easy extra credit. Glad he's teaches the next class in the series.
Very PowerPoint lecture based. He is a good, clear speaker and will communicate the main topics of the unit in an interesting way. However, you absolutely do need to complete the reading assigned, or you will have difficulty on exams.
Read the textbook and attend all lectures and you'll be solid. Easy A class. Very clear grading criteria as well. Also offers extra credit.
You really need to do a lot of readings if you would like to get a high grade in his tricky exams.
amazing professor. easy to understand lecture slides, panopto accessible, interesting topics (made more interesting by him), and clearly stated expectations. seems like an all-around, genuinely great human.
You don't need to do the homework. There are lot's of readings you have to read if you want to get a good grade on the exam. 0.3 extra credit on your GPA if you did. Tricky exam! Very tricky! Whatever, this professor is a good man. But, lot's of readings you have to read!
Interesting professor and topics of discussion -- primarily given in power points. This is a class where you actually do need to read all of the assigned text. If you pay attention and lecture and study vocabulary terms you should be fine.
You really can't skip lectures when it comes to this class, he gives a lot of examples that are helpful if you don't get the ones in the book. Very reading heavy, be sure to follow his schedule so you don't lag behind. Attending the chapter reviews that are given by your TA before exams will really save your grade.
Really interesting and awesome lectures, gives you time to take notes before moving on. You can tell he's a seasoned lecturer. There isn't really homework, but don't skimp out on reading or studying. Pretty much your entire grade depends on the three tests in the quarter. Do the extra credit, but sign up early! It's really easy. It saved my butt!
Poll ev necessary but it isn't graded of accuracy so you can do it from home. Lectures panopto recorded if you can't go to class. If you go 6 hours of extra credit studies your grade gets raised .3 which is a huge help. His lectures are EXTREMELY dry and boring and the curve is harsh but if you read and do most of the poll you should be fine
Amazing guy. Makes class super interesting, but tests are really focuses on lecture and reading.
Excellent teacher, I thought it was a wonderful class. Make sure to do the readings and review the lecture, and do the extra credit, which gives your grade a 0.3+ boost. If you work moderately hard, it's not difficult to get an A. Exams are heavily based on the text, so read, make flashcards, memorize everything. Overall, an enjoyable experience.
tests were easy, but hes really boring. hw assignments were where i lost the most points and those are graded by your TA. not a difficult class. pollev was easy bc you can read it from home and answer, but even if you did answer incorrectly, you get full points. just beware he only keeps polls open for 20sec
Amazing lecture, helpful pollev, lecture notes are very important, make sure to read the book and have a general understanding of the experiments and their results
For 101 or 202, maybe Passer's a good professor but definitely not for 209. His lectures were boring as hell. Paper assignment did not have clear prompts and had to go to office hours every time. Can't promise that you'll get to meet him though because there's 10 other students also confused on what he expects for the paper.
This class was the hardest 101 class I have ever taken in my life. The class is basically graded on three tests.
Passer is a funny, interesting professor which makes lectures good. Its important to go to class because tests are largely based on notes from lectures. Uses Pollev everyday which was a good tool to check what I knew. Overall, organized class, I knew what I had to do to get a good grade.
overall easy class, but lectures can be boring sometimes. It's good as long as you do the readings and keep up with lectures.
Your entire grade depends on 3 tests. Test content is based on lecture material so you must attend class. Much harder than other psych 101 classes but enjoyable.
His lectures were very predictable. Professor Passer delivered information very factually and stuck closely to the way the textbook presented information. It wasn't the most exciting but at least I knew that all the material was relevant for the tests.
While the class content seems very basic and easy, the three tests (which compose most of your grade) are primarily on specific terms and definitions, making it way harder than necessary. The lectures are alright, and you can tell that Dr. Passer is pretty knowledgable, but several lectures are spent watching hour long videos that are not relevant.
Great professor. Funny, intelligent, and sensible. The class is very boring but he makes it tolerable. Tests are doable if you go to lecture and actually read the textbook (seriously, read the textbook). The homework is doable too but don't wait until last minute to finish it since it can make or break your grade. Would definitely take him again.
Dr. Passer is a good lecturer, but this is a boring class . Lectures are dry, but pay attention because class material is fair game for the midterms and final. There is a lot of reading in this course; check the syllabus for when readings are due. Instructions for the homework assignments were very confusing and wordy.
Uses his own book but claims re receives no profit from it. Dull, boring, tries to joke but normally fails in his delivery. Highly unclear grading expectations, and his TAs are worse (or at least mine was). He may love research, but he fails at infecting students with anything more than severe apathy. One of the least enjoyable classes I've taken.
He's a brilliant prof. But notice, his exam is harder than lecture, make sure you read the textbook pages before exam. And do the extra credit, it really helps!
Great professor. you have to read the book by yourself and because he will ask about stuff from the book that wasn't mentioned in class. He works hard and makes sure you understand the material. Makes you want to major in psych.
Having Mr. Passer as one of my first professors was a nice way to ease myself into college, his class isnt hard as long as you do the readings and take notes in lectures. Launch Pad helps too. Even with large lectures he appreciates participation from students!
Read the book, do the online assignments, and go to the review sessions and all will go well. You can change your GPA +.3 by doing extra credit, so do that. Dr. Passer has great content organization, active lectures, and a passion for psych101.
Horrible professor, easy classes. If you have test files it is literally impossible to get less than a 3.7
Although the topics during the first 2-3 weeks were rather dull, after the first exam the lectures became much more interesting. The class was very easy - as long as you go to lecture, take some notes, and make sure you know all the vocab from the textbook chapters assigned, you should be fine. He uses PollEv and provides easy extra credit.
3 exams, each 40 point. Lectures every day. If you go to lecture every day and take notes, do the readings thoroughly, and do the extra credit, guaranteed 4.0.
Attendance is basically mandatory because of the use of PollEv for in-class participation. Although as a person Passer is great and funny, his style of teaching lends itself to become a race to copy down all the notes before he changes slides. The class videos help with engagement, but the overwhelming textbook reading makes up most of self-study.
Passer is an amazing professor who explains things very clearly. His lectures & exams are straightforward. I highly recommend taking him because he's very caring of students and actually wants you to do well!
Dr. Passer was okay. He assigns a decent amount of homework, but he provides detailed instructions on everything (sometimes TOO detailed). It's important to go to labs and sections because it's worth part of your grade. Don't be afraid of his classes! His exams are pretty easy and you don't really have to read the textbook, skim for vocab!
His tests reflect the content of his lectures very well. His teaching is very clear.
Michael Passer is seriously one of the best professors I've had. He is so passionate about Psychology, but also about the success of his students. I had him for Psych 101 in Spring 2020, and he still tried to be available for office hours or meetings after class through Zoom. He doesn't try to trick you on exams. Lots of dad jokes. Overall, amazing
Overall, an extremely easy class. Although extra credit is available, it really isn't necessary. If you are a diligent note-taker and reader, it shouldn't be hard to receive a 4. As for Passer himself, he's a great guy who generally cares about his students, and he goes to extreme lengths to make sure everyone understands and completes assignments.
You will learn literally nothing from the lectures; all the real content is in the readings. Grades are also weighed in a few tests/assignments.
Great for an intro course! Lecture can sometimes get boring but that's expected. Passer definitely knows what he's talking about. Since it's such a large class you have to take advantage of TA help. Tests and MOAs make up majority of grade. Overall, it's a low-stress course and generally interesting.
I thought Passer and this class was 'eh.' He covers around 20% of the material needed for the exams in his lectures, everything else is from the textbook, so it's extremely reading heavy. But, he clearly enjoys teaching psychology and included some very interesting videos in class, plus the exams this year were online and open note, a definite plus
I thoroughly enjoyed psych 101 and Dr. Passer. He is a great prof who is very clearly passionate about teaching and takes student feedback seriously. Read the textbook and go to the lectures. Tests are straightforward, but are very well represented with content from everything we have covered. Overall, an easy and interesting class.
Doctor Passer is so nice, but his class was the hardest class I have taken at UW. he is awesome, but grades are based solely on 3 exams with projects only adding slight points, and as not a good test taker, that was super hard for me. Super nice professor, and interesting class, but it was harder than expected especially for a bad test taker
i loved this class! dr passer was amazing and the work was super manageable and very interesting
Everyday lectures but he taught them in a way that made it engaging and exciting. Used a lot of different examples to clarify key topics and was always available for questions. Best extra credit policies to boost GPA score. Lots of reading every week and exams often covered things from the textbook and LaunchPad not discussed in lecture.
Dr. Passer is an amazing choice! His tests are open-book and he gives tons of extra-credit. However, you MUST do the launchpad readings to do well on the tests. He's clearly very passionate and knowledgeable which is reflected in his teaching. He is always available outside of class and is willing to help! Would definitely recommend.
PROFESSOR PASSER IS THE BEST PROFESSOR AT UW. He is the best lecturer I have ever seen and is so great with students. He clearly cares so much about the students' success and is so enthusiastic about his teaching. I highly recommend that every UW student gets to experience a class with Passer if given the chance. BE PREPARED TO READ THOUGH.
Reading your textbook and finishing the launchpad will save your test grades! Lectures arent necessary but can be interested even with his monotone voice.
I literally love Prof Passer. His lectures are so engaging and he provides a lot of material that helps you score high on his exams. He offers extra credit and always makes time for his students. If you want to pass his class and get a good mark, listen to his lectures, do launchpad, and study a little bit everyday:)
Great professor, really knew how to explain each topic covered. Be sure to read the textbook & pay attention to lectures! Super interesting too.
Great instructor. He truly cares for his students. His use of videos and case studies makes lectures engaging. Theres only a few assignments, so try your best on each one. Exams cover both the lecture and textbook, so dont get behind in either. A lot of the exam questions are variations of the end of chapter practice exams in the textbook. GL!
Passer is a good lecturer and very passionate. As long as you do the readings the class is pretty easy. Tests were online and completely open note/textbook. There was a lot of textbook reading for homework. You don't really need to go to lecture but in quizzes there are sometimes some very specific lecture related questions.
Literally best professor ever. So so clear in everything he says. High expectations, but he is absolutely fair and just so brilliant. Honestly emotional to leave his class
3 exams and 2 writing assignments. the lectures are long, and theres a lot of material presented in both the lectures and the readings, however, they do overlap so its not too bad. the exam questions are sometimes tricky, as they come from the readings mainly, so you have to be sure to read everything.
I absolutely love professor Passer! I took Psych 101 with him last semester, and now I am taking 209. The classes are graded a lot of tests (and most of the questions comes from readings) He is so kind and I never wanted to mix lectures because theyre entertaining! PSYCH101 tip:DO NOT PURCHASE LAUNCHPAD!You can make unlimited accounts/free trial
I love Michael Passer!! He's obviously passionate about the subject and he includes lots of videos and other ad-ins so his lectures aren't just him talking at you the whole time. Test material was 90% from slides so pretty easy. Do the extra credit research studies, you can raise your GPA a ton! Overall I loved this class.
Best professor ive had, super nice and super passionate about what he does. There isnt any homework, just taking notes in class and then 3 midterms using the notes. The textbook has readings that arnt required, but are useful for stuff thats on the midterm
Professor Passer is definitely my favorite instructor this quarter. His assignments are super easy, and its really easy to get an A. You do have to take notes on the textbook but it's pretty easy, and the midterms are easy as well as long as you take notes. His lectures are always interesting and he makes them super fun.
Professor Passer is my favorite professor this quarter. Attendance isn't mandatory in lectures and each one is recorded so you can watch it from wherever. Textbook reading is optional, but I highly recommend doing it as exam content is primarily from there. His assignments easy to complete and we get a day off when they are due. I love him :)
Very humorous, and understanding of his students' time. A great teacher I hope to have him for another course.
Dr. Passer is amazing, he has such a calming voice that makes lectures nice to attend. I fell behind on readings often but as long as you go to every lecture (or watch the recordings) and take good notes, the tests will be easy. Two major projects, both of which were fairly easy, exams were online and open note.
Cool professor with succinct and engaging lectures. Although it's not required, you'd want to read the textbook in order to know everything the 3 exams might cover, because sometimes he won't go over them in lecture. Try to stay on top of lectures and reading, take good notes, and you'll be fine.
This class was very enjoyable and interesting!!! I loved the lectures so much; Professor Passer really knew how to make them interesting! We watched videos in class too, so there's that! He was quite funny, and the MOA assignments were fun in my opinion. You will have to read the textbook to do well on exams, but it's a reasonable amount :)
Dr. Passer is a great professor who made intro Psychology very enjoyable. The course is graded on open-note tests and online activities, so as long as you take notes the class is not difficult and relatively stress-free. He tests on a lot of content from the textbook, which you need to buy, but besides that I thought Passer's class was great!
He's knowledgeable, interactive, humorous, experienced- really everything you can hope for in a professor. Not to mention that his tests are open book and open note, and he boosts your grade with completion-based online activities- no reason you shouldn't be able to succeed in Psych 101 with him as your prof.
Dr. Passer is a great professor. The class was very interesting and his lectures were clear and entertaining. Anything on the tests (open notes) is from the lecture or assigned readings. He is extremely organized and you know what to do to get the grade you want. He values class feedback. Definitely recommend this class AND this professor!!
Lectures were not very interesting and almost entire grade is based on 3 tests with a limit that did not give me enough time to even read all the questions.
He's nice but his lectures are incredibly boring. The current topic of psychology this quarter was sleep, and the class was way too much work for a three-credit course, there's so much reading, as well as three exams that are way harder than they need to be. If you're looking for an easy class to take for some credits, don't bother with this one.
Professor Passer is a good professor. There are readings, but he provides focus questions that clearly show what you should be looking for. And if you do one a day, you should be fine. Majority of the readings are short. 3 exams that are open-note, 2 papers that are short and have clear guidelines. But, exams don't allow fixing previous answers.
Professor Passer is one of the best professors I've had at UW. This course was focused on the psychology of sleep and the information was very interesting. He made the lectures super fun and interesting! I recommend taking his class.
I took 101 with Dr. Passer this autumn as a freshman, and I loved the class! The class meets everyday for lecture but is also recorded + posted on Canvas. There were a few online assignments worth 5-10 pts each, and 3 exams that were open-note and open-book. Overall, if you keep up with the textbook readings alongside lectures, it's not difficult.
I took Professor Passer's class autumn quarter of 2023 as a first-year student. This is one of the pre-requisites for the psychology major and I had a great time with it! It was a big lecture class, but he still did his best to keep everyone engaged. It was also really helpful that he recorded his lectures! Kind of a lot of reading, but worth it!
Lectures were extremely boring and it felt like he was not passionate at all about the subject he was teaching.
He is a super passionate professor! The course content is fairly interesting, and it is not a lot of work. Lectures are recorded and the online assignments are mostly graded on completion. I would recommend doing the extra credit work if you want an A though- it's not that hard to participate in the studies, just sign up for the online ones.
KINGGGGG! He is a very chill, likeable guy. Humorous. You HAVE to read the textbook. Some text questions refer to some "niche" things from the book, but it's an interesting textbook. DO ACHIEVE! It is so useful, and he pulls some questions from achieve. Overall, he does the most to ensure you take something good away from this class.
The class was very interesting and I learned a lot. There is a good amount of reading and Achieve tasks but chunking it made it easy (ex: 7 pages a day). Always willing to answer questions and available after class. Highly recommend!
Great professor! Passer is extremely effective at presenting the content (which in a course like this is a lot) easily and concisely through his lecture slides. Read the textbook and do the Achieve assignments if you want to do well on the exams. Lectures can occasionally get boring, but he does a pretty good job of keeping students engaged.
Passer is the BEST Psych 101 professor EVER! Seriously please take this class with him you won't regret it. My only warning would be for students with ADHD, PLEASE get time accommodations before taking this class!!! The tests are time-limited so having extra time to read/process the questions is a must-have, the tests aren't hard just long.
Overall, prof was very nice and interesting to hear lecture. Also offers extra credit by participating in research studies at UW. Be warned, read the textbook and attend lecture as some material is mentioned in one and not in the other, but both will end up on the midterms (lectures are on Panopto). Still, would recommend him.
His Psych101 was a LOT of reading but other than that everything was straightforward and easy. People say he's a boring lecturer cause of his voice but I genuinely loved his lectures and found them interesting. Am taking him for Psych222 right now and he doesn't make students suffer endlessly.
Passer's PSYCH101 class is engaging and worth the effort. The lectures are recorded, but attending is recommended. The textbook is essential, and using unstuckstudy AI for study prep can really help. Overall, a great intro psych course.
Professor not passionate at all. The lectures are so boring and it's not even relevant for the exams. The class only has 3 exams which are very weighted. Also, for homework it's a lot of reading. I would not recommend this class at all. Please invest your time and money on some other class.
He is undoubtedly a good professor and would love to take his other courses but he is retiring soon 😔
Very well-respected and a great teacher. The class was only graded on two major assignments and three exams without any cushioning assignments, so make sure that you are on top of those. The exams are online and fully open note, and the lectures are very interesting. A lot of outside readings but they go by quick and are low pressure.
This class is super interesting, and Michael Passer describes the topics super well. You do have to read the textbook a lot, but the prof covers most of the topics in lectures. Overall, easy class and super fun!
He's retiring at the end of this quarter anyways, but his lectures were great and they always really helped me understand the material. Great professor.
Class was very interesting, but the lectures are slow and long. You were able to watch the lectures at home on 1.5x speed, which made them easier to follow. Wish there were more assignments to weigh the exams less and the grading system was less confusing.
Records all of his lectures, funny, brings in relatable or pop-culture anecdotes, seems to care about his students, didn't miss a single class. However, the final grade is made up of only 7 assignments (3 of which are non-cumulative tests), and there is a ton of reading. No writing at all in this class, just multiple choice. He's retired.
Michael Passer might be my favorite professor I've ever had, his lectures are so enjoyable and interesting!! Unfortunately, he said that he was retiring at the end of last quarter (fall 2024) so I'm not sure how useful this review will be. However, if he does come back to teach part-time you ABSOLUTELY should take whatever class he's teaching!!
