Think you can answer 90 questions in 90 mins then go ahead and take him. Class was not enjoyable at all. Only take him if you're serious about biology otherwise I wouldn't recommend him. Definitely not one of those welcoming 101 classes.
Pros of taking him: Only two lab quizzes, which is about the petal pig. Easy lab and homework is not that difficult. Cons of taking him:Long boring lecture in class and in the lab, that is not helpful for the exams. Get the book and get ready to read. Exams are heavy with 70-90 questions each. He is kind of rude too.
The textbook is going to save your life! He was a really funny professor but I feel like he was a little too laid back. The exams were pretty straightforward (material was taken from labs & in class lectures) If you missed class, it was easy to catch up as long as you got the notes from your classmates!
The class was very long and his way of teaching is not good for students who just got in to bio , he know alot so he expects you to do so. his exams are hard up to 80 questions and they dont match the study guide, no extra credit is offer so its hard to make up your grade.
Class may feel long but totally worth it. Lots of extra credit and tells you all the questions on the exam with a study guide. Definitely take him. JUST TAKE HIM!!
I became good friends with Peglar while learning under him in Bio 101 and 102. He's a super nice guy if not a little awkward, but I enjoyed the class. As long as you pay attention in class and take good notes, you'll be fine. His tests are straight forward with no trick questions.
Peglar is cool. He has an interesting sense of humor and made it a point to keep us all at least mildly entertained. Easily sidetracked. Calendar challenged. Take his class. He's a fungi.
This teacher is okay, his lectures and tests are heavy, his explanations are hard to understand. He can be a bit disorganized too. He makes jokes during the class which I think is great.
Mr. Peglar is very knowledgeable and hilarious. He's always in a good mood, but that does not stop him from adding dark humor to each class at any given opportunity. Easily offended? Don't take him. He's sarcastic. Also, he's got two Master's degrees and a phD. Easy tests. Fun labs. Take him. Too bad he does not teach BIO 102 anymore. :(
The best teacher I've ever had!!! I love his lectures and wish he taught BIO 102 T-T His jokes are kind of awkward, but that's what makes them even funnier. Peglar's tests are easy and are like the study guide. Peglar will forever be remembered as the best professor I had in college. XOXOXO
Best bio professor at nova he keeps lectures Interesting to say the least with awkward jokes(like really awkward jokes sometimes)but he makes sure you know the material before moving on to the next topic. If you show up and pay attention then youre guaranteed an A or B. Wish he taught BIO 102 still!!
Best Biology professor ever! HE SHOULD GET A RAISE!!!!!!!!! I hope he teaches Bio 102 or else I'll Be very sad T-T
Hilarious. Awesome. Friendly. Take him.
Knows his stuff thats for sure, hes also HILARIOUS. His tests follow the study guides pretty closely as well which is nice, overall this class is informative and should be easy enough to get a good grade for bio and non-bio majors alike.
Would definitely take this prof again. Lectures have inspired me to become a biologist. Still bummed that he's not teaching Bio 102 T-T
He's not teaching Biology 102 *crying emojii* Overall an amazing teacher and gives easy tests if you study the study guide. Jokes are amazing and hilarious. If Biology doesn't work out, he would become a very successful stand-up comedian for biologists.
In his class, I learned so much biology. He'd be great if he taught BIO 102. Knew his information and told many details.
Peglar is a caring professor who only wants good for his students. Hope he changes his mind about teaching bio 102!
Amazing lectures and a great sense of humor. Does go on a tangent from time to time, but in all honesty, they're really interesting. Hope he considers teaching biology 102!
Want him to teach bio 102, definitely take his class
a litle on the difficult side but definitely a gem. made course entertaining.
Previous ratings below me should say all you need to know, I will also add that I hope he keeps teaching bio 102(hes not going to anymore)
A really great teacher who cares about his students. Lectures have a lot of important info and would be a great bio 102 teacher.
He let us get extra credit by going to this green festival. Really knows his biology. Wish he taught Biology 102.
Took him for Bio 101. He is a great professor and is very passionate about Bio. Great sense of humor as well. He is very lecture heavy so if you're passionate about bio take him. He handed out practice exams which were the only reason I passed his class, I would not of been able to pass based off only lectures.
good guy, took us to green festival wihch was entertaining
I enjoyed professor peglars class this semester, theres not much homework, youre mainly graded on tests and lab, so show up and pay attention and theres no way you can fail because hes a good teacher.
He's really nice and funny, but be ready to study the material. He posts study guides up that are almost exactly like the tests so they help a lot. He's really helpful when you don't understand something. He's not a hard grader or a hard teacher, the material is just hard, so he tries to make it fun and easy as he can.
Peglar is a great professor who really cares about his students. I took his 6 week BIO 101 class and he made it easy for everyone to pass and gives a few chances for extra credit and make up work. He provides study guides that are exactly like the tests and will stay for study sessions.
Took him for bio 101 and Im going to take him for Bio 102. Hes a chill guy. Material is kinda difficult but he makes it easy to pass his class.
for a bio 101 class, he makes this class much more difficult than it needs to be. His homework assignments are not overly difficult, but are extremely tedious and he makes you handwrite most of it. study guide for test barely helped as the test was much more difficult than it. overall, this class is difficult and tedious for its 101 level
Professor Peglar is a real specialist. He is very passionate and presents amazing knowledge of what he is teaching but his lectures are very long and boring. He gives his best to teach students as much as he can by bombarding them with an overwhelming amount of information. His tests are very long and complicated although study guides quite helpful
One of my fav professors at NOVA. He really explains the material in a way that you will understand while making lecture interesting with his stories and tangents. Gives study guides for all exams (that are exactly the same as the real exam :)) I personally didn't use the textbook. Really good guy and would take again.
He is a good professor, gives exams on the "Study guides" as it is. You do need to read some powerpoints as they are what's on the exam. Don't skip classes or lectures, do the occasional homework and it's an easy A.
His lectures are easy (you do have to take notes), the study guides are similar to the exams, made bio interesting, and labs were very easy. I failed BIO 101 in the past with a previous professor but after taking Peglar class, I knew that I would definitely pass!
Peglar made BIO 101 managable. Just do your homework and labs. He seems to grade by completion a lot.
Professor Peglar is a good choice for BIO 101. Gives boring, but very informative lectures. The labs are straight forward, as all of them are from the lab manual. The exams can be long at times, but all of them are multiple choice and true/false. The exams are worth 70% of the grade, so be sure to do good on those. Do the work, and you will be fine
Some exams were exactly like the study guides, so it made the exams easier. He seems very passionate about biology so he often rambles and talks about things "that we don't need to know," but he wants to talk about it anyway. He also gets off topic A LOT and quite a few times he would speak on political and sensitive topics unrelated to biology.
Prof Peglar is very rude and sometimes get disrespectful towards the students
He doesn't like if anybody ask him any question during the lecture .His exams are exactly like study guide so getting an A is easy .He doesn't like to discuss exam questions after exams in case you don't understand anything as he doesn't want to disclose the correct answer which is weird.
He self praise himself alot.
These reviews were barely accurate. He's super rude, makes subtle insults, and can not take constructive-criticism. Not to mention, his study guides are not like his tests. He also tends to talk more about things unrelated to biology which will derail you from even learning.
I picked the class since the reviews here were okay. He does not take questions kindly, so if you want to ask a question and clarify material after class save your time. His tests are quite awful and follow a riddle format rather than straight to the point questions. When giving him constructive criticism he will stonewall you. Save your money.
If you are majoring in BIO/Medical field, he is the best professor who knows the material from the heart, and you should take his class. He passionate about the subject. He provided a study guide for exam, if you put 8 hours into it, you will the material and pass the exam with an A.
Lectures are very boring and he goes off-topic ALOT! He is human and makes mistakes but does not like to admit it. Once you call him out on whether the material on the study guide is the same as the test, he will try to change it to help everyone. It would have been worse if it was in person tbh! But if you do the work and try, you will pass!
This mans is a mess. He kept forgetting when class started and went over time multiple times. He could not figure zoom through the whole semester. He spent 90% on human anatomy and 10% on everything else. He even considered going to the zoo DURING A PANDEMIC. As a biology major, I highly don't recommend him.
man yall doing him dirty wit these reviews. he aint that bad lol if you wanna pass bio just take him the class is pretty slight for the most part. the exams kinda hard but he literally almost gives out the whole exams on study guides before hand. i barely payed attention and still finished wit a 90 yall tripping.
Mr Peglar seriously needs help, he doesnt know how to give respect . He insults you if he doesnt like the question you asked . He has a general attitude problem.
The grade you get depends on the effort you put in, tbh. I took him before and I'd take him again. He kinda awkward sometimes but he cares and is more than willing to help if you need it, and will offer extra credit if you ask. The tests are also just like the study guides, and the class really isn't that hard, although it moves fast sometimes.
He's seriously the greatest professor i have ever had in science. Like my other professors cannot be compared. He is the most helpful professor and takes criticism.
The professor was really helpful and wanted you to pass, even though his lectures can go off track, he has a review before exams and also let us ask any questions we had + answered them really clearly making sure we understood the concept. He says exactly what content will be on the exams, which are zoom proctored. Understanding about late work!
Course itself is cookie-cutter for community college; read the material, show up for exam, submit homework. The professor, however, has a major attitude/blame issue and vanity. I noticed on countless occasions of my classmates' inquiries getting shut down if he finds them disagreeable. He would make petty remarks when students' video/audio cut out.
Professor reads off his powerpoints a lot. If you ask a question or ask him to clarify most of the time he will give you some snarky remark. Can make some simple concepts pretty complicated. He will dock points even if you follow the instructions of some labs. If you take a test, you do NOT get the correct answers. Takes a long time to grade stuff.
He is an okay teacher. He has mood swings. He makes jokes; sometimes they are funny, other times they are weird. The class was interesting. Make sure to take notes, especially when he says that what he is saying will be on the exam. Do all the assignments and attend the labs, and you will have an A even if you get a couple of B's on the exams.
He was a really enjoyable professor to have and he was quite funny. He talks very fast and seems to mention unnecessary things. You will have no idea what will be on the tests as the things he says "this will be on your exam" to are rarely on the exam. Its honestly a hard course but I enjoyed it as I enjoy the subject.
He's one of the better science professors at NOVA. Exams were tough but if you study a little bit every day you will get the grade you want. His lectures are excellent because he will ask you questions during class to help you solidify what you are learning. I was able to transfer the knowledge I learned from his class toward chemistry & A&P class
He an okay professor. Makes mistakes when making the test and students point it out than tells us during the test. Doesn't keep his word. He said he would drop 1 test grade and didn't When you ask a simple question gives you rude responses. The tests okay. Has 4 exams and 1 field trip. Has 2 extra credit assignments which add 5%to final grade.
Not a bad bio professor if you are registering late.
Easy enough if u pay attention, lectures kinda boring but very little homework, good if u only need the credit
Pay attention in lectures and attend labs and it will not be hard to get a good grade. Test material comes exactly out of lectures. Professor gives lots of extra credit and wants you to get a good grade. I found it easy to understand from how he lectures and found myself not having to study an incredibly hard amount. Would take again.
Professor Peglar is one of the best biology professors I have had. He reminds me of Saul Goodman but as a biology professor. Overall, the tests are easy if you study and understand the material. You will receive an A if you understand the PowerPoint and the lecture on his chalkboard.
Professor Peglar can be a bit disorganized and unclear at times which is what I found difficult. However, he is a really good guy and a great professor. He really knows his stuff and tries to make connections to biology in our own lives. Take advantage of all the extra-credit opportunities he provides!
He makes sure his students understand the lecture and takes time after class or during his office hours to answer questions. Do all the work and pay attention in class and you will do good. He gives study guides before exams
He is a good prof. you will learn a lot of thing if you take his class. He is nice. Just 1 thing is you have to serious when you take his class. It is not too hard just because Biology has a lot of information I do not think some one can be better than him. I took his 2 classes and I got 2 A+
Listen and take notes in lecture- he talks a lot which helps in actually understanding the topics that you would not understand by just looking at the power points or notes. So, taking notes of what he is saying can also help. His lab was a bit unorganized but overall amazing professor, definitely worth your while.
He at best is mediocre at explaining. Goes off-topic a lot. He still has not graded our exams two and three from the beginning of the semester and tomorrow is our final. Professor does not know how to make good exams or good study guides. overall professor definitely made this course way harder than it is.
Not a bad professor, but needs to work on reliability and organization. We went through the entire semester w/o knowing our grades in the class despite him promising to grade assignments. We didn't cover all the material because lectures/labs were poorly organized. On the upside he did give us exams beforehand, some extra credit and extensions.
Nice teacher, just do the work and you will do fine. He's friendly and cares for students if you are trying hard.
the best!!!
Do NOT take. Waste of your time and money
His jokes, teaching style and preparedness were all below average
He is a great bio professor! He is not much of an extra credit person but he does give out some occasionally. His exams are tough but it is for a good reason, but they are multiple choice. His labs are easy and he really does try to make them fun.
Class is disorganized and went off topic a lot. Material was not very well conveyed to reflect tests. Slightly humorous
Definitely is a bit disorganized, and quick to forget things, but overall is really nice and fair about assignments and exams. He's clearly very knowledgeable about micro, but just needed a refresher about how to teach it. He's chill and it wasn't too difficult of a class. Don't take his class if you need strict organization and deadlines.
Dr. Peglar is a great professor who is knowledgeable about the course material! The lectures were filled with important information but were taught in a very digestible manner, with humor and concrete examples sprinkled in to aid in understanding. The course material is helping me with work in the medical field and will be used throughout my career
Pretty sure these good reviews have been written by the professor himself. No one in their good mind would take this class again. Horribly disorganized and a waste of money.
Professor Peglar is a knowledgeable instructor who tries to make the material engaging. While the class can be a bit disorganized at times, using resources like the free textbook and Unstuckstudy for study prep can really help. Overall, a solid class if you're willing to put in the work.
Professor Peglar is actually the best. I look forward to his class and he makes learning BIO easy. The hw is just read a chapter and do a Kinect assignment that helps a lot with actually learning the material. The cares a lot about his students and always trys to make class a bit fun and funny. Literally the best professor I have had.
Professor Peglar is very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience teaching this course. His lectures are often disorganized, unclear, and off topic. His mood regularly impacts the quality of instruction greatly. The tests and labs are very easy. I ended with an A but did not learn a lot.
Excellent professor! Helped everyone in our class to become passionate about Biology!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He was a last resort for me but I wish I didn't take him.
Emphasis on would not take again!!! Hes a mess and he made our final exam so hard and confusing for no reason making grades to suddenly drop. Not worth the money, find someone else.
Its not even a hard class at all but he makes it hard. I do not recommend him
You can tell that he is passionate about biology he just sucks at teaching and structuring a class.
HUGE waste of my money AND time. Try to avoid taking him if you can.
The class itself was easy and I had no problems but the exams were way too hard especially the final. He just never taught what would be on it.
I haven't failed in exam since I was in middle school and I failed my final if that tells you anything. He just doesnt provide the resources to succeed like other teachers do.
I hate that man and I hope he sees this and knows it. I have had my fair share of bad professors and he is one of the worst.
Honestly a really stand-up guy. The lectures are loaded with information but was really generous with breaks in-between, and cracking jokes which is always a nice touch for a professor to have. Lab activities are what you'd expect, his directions were easy to follow. Homework is light; just one chapter overview per week. Overall a really cool guy!
Inappropriate, unprofessional, and often out of bounds. Had a handful of weird interactions with Peglar with and without other students present. He regularly came to lab and didn't know the material he was supposed to be teaching. Discussed topics inappropriate to lecture during class time. Take a different professor.
Took this class in Fall 2022; he graded based on 4 exams and 1 homework a chapter. Provides a study guide which the exams practically mirror, just changed slightly. Lectures are loaded with info; he posts the slides so if you can't make it to a lecture no need to worry too much. Labs are great, if you're confused he's more than willing to help.
Took this class Spring 2023; Graded based on 4 exams and a HW. Provided a study guide each exam which is almost perfect. Lectures are packed with info and he posts the slides if you want to use them to study or miss a class. If you take 102 in the spring you get the opportunity to go to Huntley Meadows Park for the final assignment which was easy.
Probably the best professor Ive had at NOVA. He knows how to teach and he does a great job at making his lectures fun and informative. The exams are easy if you study, its the same material in the lectures. Super understanding and wants you to do good in his class. Overall amazing professor, 10/10 recommend.
Let me save you the time and do not take. He was a last resort option and I knew the minute he started talking about inappropriate matters. He is passionate about biology but shouldn't teach. Too many inappropriate interactions and comments.
Peglar is an amazing professor who cares A LOT about you and your grade. Don't be afraid to speak up and participate in class. Makes it overall a better learning experience. I would take his class again if he taught other science classes. You will succeed if you participate, do the work, study, and ask questions. Take him over anyone else
Class was very boring because it was on a saturday from 9-4 but he does sprinkle in some comedy here and there to make it more bearable. He tends to go all over the place but as long as you pay attention to the subtle hints for examinations and such and have a good grasp on the study guides you will be perfectly fine.
A little awkward at times, but a pretty good professor. He tries his best to engage with students, even if they simply stare at him. Always offered students chances to improve their grade, and frequently mentioned meeting during office hours. I'd only advise against taking this class if you're not a great test taker.
Half of the bad reviews are BS and they were probably just lazy. I took him for bio 101 and 102 and it was the easiest A, just do the work and homework assignments!!! His tests are literally the study guides that he gives and he works w you really well. Loved his class.
While he was far from being a really bad professor, he still made the class exhausting 70% of the time. It took him after 2 exams to remember to give study questions for his students. He was a decent lecture speaker though, telling funny stories and he had fun labs for his students to do and the lab grade was just signing an attendance sheet.
I love whatever is wrong with this guy. Professor Peglar is knowledgable, kind, and humble, always willing to reach out a helping hand if needed. Although quite eccentric, it is clear that he is passionate about biology and cares about your performance in the class. Long lectures were remedied by fun jokes and class engagement.
