DUDE ROX!!!! Big Mike made me like history class for the first time. his papers are the easiest and most fun papers ever and he should be given lots of money...
Fun Guy! Tests are easy- Papers are easy!! Very interesting- knows his stuff! Easy "A" if you do the work.
big mikes the man best teacher i ve ever had hands down at any level he need to get out of macomb and start teaching at a big ten university he's that good. if u can take notes and are willing to study atleast 2 times in a semester an A is a sure thing .

Mike is a very good teacher and helps everyone in the class and one of the greatest teachers i have ever had.
Mike is an awesome teacher he makes everything intresting and easy to understand. He knws his information and talks to you about it like your human not like hes an adult and your a student. His class is one you'll definitley look foward to going too! Take it!
Best teacher I've ever had. He makes history interesting. If you go to class, it's a breeze. You have to take a lot of notes, but you never have to use the book....don't buy it. Big Mike is a very nice person. He likes to joke around and make class interesting. I highly reccommend taking him!!!
He is the perfect replacement for Rustoni. I can only hope he's there to stay, b/c he's one of the best teacher Macomb's got.
I had this guy for both classes! He's excellent and you will learn a lot. Take him.
Big Mike is a straight G. THe guy is the man he makes classes fun and interesting, and is always there for the student. I really hope he stays at MCC. He always has good advice about all kinds of topics, he is a great guy. Very nice and approachable. I only hope all of his hardwork pays off.
Best Teacher. TAKE HIM.
I am taking his class for a summer class. I never had him before. He is AWESOME! Everyone should be in his classes. He knows how to teach. A great guy for sure. Take him! I can't believe Macomb College is giving him the shaft. They should hire him for full time. Shame on MCC and their politics!
great guy, knows his subject and really knows how to keep history interesting
By far the best teacher I've ever had!!
How could the college not hire him full time?????
Big Mike is a good professor. Tho his expectations of a 6 page paper on one person are a little extreme. He over all is a clear well spoken professor who actually knows the info he teaches.
Big Mike is the best, best teacher at****ty macomb. gives great notes, helps you actually prepare for the test (the review is the test) very intresting class, never bored always up. great teacher, def take him
Big Mike is an awesome teacher! He knows the material and gives excellent lectures that aren't boring. Also, give a lot of assignments that get you thinking. There's a fair amount of work in his class but it's worth it.
very great teacher, great lectures, fun to listen to, always interesting
He is a great teacher. his lectures are entertaining and he always has some random fact for the students to liven up a history class. he also treats his students as adults and real people. His asignments also are ment to make you think, rather than just busy work used to get a grade.
As others have stated, Mike demonstrates respect for his students, this, in turn, earns him the respect of his students. Creates a relaxed environment that encourages the learning process. HIGHLY recommended...
Every rating below mine is correct and so true. You must take this class with Mike and ANY OTHER history (2100, and 2200 or 2000), but make sure you get this professor. Bottom line, this guy will have you remembering whats u learned 2 yrs later, and educated people make way for more educated people to listen and learn.
inteligent & frendly hist.teachr.He actualy wants studets 2learn.He articulated & expresed the scenarios he would lecture boutimpecably.I couldnt have imagined taking dis clas w/ any other profesor& the homework was infact engaging & sparked my mind which lead me 2 becum sumwhat overconfdent bout the subject that i never truly appreciated.NOreGrets
Big Mike is awsome! His lectures are very clear and well organized. He always is able to keep the class interested in the topics being dicussed. Mike is always willing and able to help students at basically any appropriate time of day, whether through email or one on one. I highly highly reccomend him as a top choice for a professor
Big Mike...oh man. This is the most down to earth, easygoing guy I've ever met. Any other history class in the world and i would have totally crashed and burned, but not this time. This is not because his class is easy, but everything is clear and organized. He keeps everything low stress, and is always willing to help you out. Big Mike rules!
This guy is great. by far the best teacher I've got this semester. I hope the college keeps him. He's the best history teacher I've ever had.
Took Mike for HST 2100 and 2200. Great experiences. Knowledgeable, entertaining, helpful. Takes a dry subject like history and brings it to life, makes it interesting. DO NOT MISS CLASS. A lot of note-taking. Writing intensive homework and exams. Attend class and take good notes & you'll ace the class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
GREAT TEACHER! BEST HISTORY TEACHER AT MACOMB. ATTENDENCE IS MANDATORY BUT IT'S OK BECAUSE HE MAKES YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO COME TO CLASS! BIG MIKE IS A GREAT TEACHER! THIS WAS THE BEST HISTORY CLASS EVER AND I REALLY HATE HISTORY! THANKS MIKE!
best prof i ever had you do your work he has no problem do what he can to help you out and he is funny as hell
Big Mike, hes really funny, and if you want to pass you have to come to class, take a lot of notes, but he uses real good analogies to help you remember things for the test, he is easy when it comes to grading, it might seem hard when your taking a million notes but if you study its a breeze!
BIG MIKE IS DEFINATLY ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS AT MACOMB! I loved this guy! Such an easy class, just pay attention and TAKE NOTES! Everything he says in lecture is for sure on the tests! Great teacher!
worst teacher ever.. he tells his student that the door is open to come and talk to but its all lies.. all he does is talk talk and talk.. what a joke. he was always in a hurry to leave home. class is overall really dificult. don't waist your money. take a different teacher..
Seriously - one of the best profs at MCC. The guy is there sun up to sun down. There is a reason he is one of the highest rated profs at MCC on RMP. He is very sincere for sure. To the last poster:The only 2 or 3 people that had a prob with him were the whiners and lazy folks. THANKS BIG MIKE!
If you like History or not Big Mike will make it fun for everyone.
I totally enjoyed Big Mike's class. Was sincere towards the material and the class. Very personable and helpful. He is down to earth and cares about what he does and who he meets everyday. As a Non-traditional student I appreciated how he was flexible in his approaches. He puts many hours into what he does. He's not self centered. Thanks Big Mike
Nice guy doesn't have any quizzes just a mid-term and a final. He has about 8 papers you have to right with 2 research papers. Cares about what he does and is very helpful although class is boring at times. Have to take a lot of notes. Never have to use the book don't bother buying it.
awesome guy
Anyone that says Mike's Class is not great is probably more worried about girl/guys than grades. Could not have taken a better class to refresh my study habits. As a 2nd degree returning student I'm happy to have taken his class. He is very passionate. How to pass & enjoy it...Come to class, listen, take notes, participate, do work, ask questions!!
Go to class, take notes, participate once & a while. Don't buy the book, his TWO exams are strictly from lectures! There are 5 2-page papers, and 2 6-page papers. NOT HARD THOUGH! No quizzes, just 2 exams and he gives you a study guide for both. DO THE STUDY GUIDE AND YOU'LL PASS! Just show Big Mike you care and he'll do the same for you
The be history teacher in the world, really. He loves his students. You do need to go basically everyday in order to take notes...cause the test questions come directly from the EXACT wording of the notes. It was a great class. He basically told one big story for the semester...it was great. He made it fun.
Big Mike is a teacher who compels in his students an urge to learn and for me his class was just what I needed to convince me to be a history major. His lecture is the class, no book necessary, he has 2 6+ page papers and 5 2 page papers, and his 2 exams are written, but easy. Big Mike is an amazing professor, he got the tenure he deserves in 2007.
He supports his troops, Big Mike, the 127th has your back! Best history teacher alive, if you don't take him, you're wasting money, time, and your brain. Forget memorizing dates, learn the important stuff with Mike. Ask him about his Garands :D
Big Mike is one of the best professors I have ever had and class isn't even over with yet. I urge any history major or those just interested in history to take his class. He is extremely helpful, keeps up an easy class, and is very funny.
I learned nothing in this class that I did not learn first in elementary school and he discussed his wife and food more than any other subject, yes he was laid back and "fun" but if you actually plan on learning anything about history other than Andrew Jackson would have been your "homeboy" I'd shy away from Placco.
Such a great guy! I wish I could take all my HIST classes with Placco, he is very clear and answers any question you have. His tests are major points but he always gives you a study guide and answers any questions before the exam that you need. Placco is awesome!
Mike is a great guy, funny and interesting. I had him and Professor Weintz in the same semester for two different history classes. I liked Professor Weintz better. Although I like Big Mike a lot I feel like I learned more in Weintz class.
Where do I begin? He takes about 3 weeks just to grade any of your assignments then when you get them back there is just a bunch of illegable garbage written on it and a random score that he pulled out of you know where. He gets mad when you dont write everything down but he repeats himself 100 times thinking that he is truly enlightening you.
Many people seem to like him, I did not. Too much talk about his personal life. Too many analogies. Way too much repetition. Grading is unclear and arbitrary. I find it strange that every negative comment on here has a rebuttal. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, people. Placco's teaching style is not for everyone!!
I think that Big Mike is an awsome teacher. I had NO interest in history before I took his class, but he is a great interest grabber! He would explain all of the events of history with such clarity that it felt as though we were actually in that time period. He always has office hours so if there is ever a question about anything you could drop in
Never was bored in his class, I loved his lectures. However i attended every class but one, studied my butt off for tests, did every homework assignment, and also did two extra credits available and still only got a B+. I don't agree with the grade, but still enjoyed his class.
This guy wass pretty cool. I slacked off a bit but still did ok. He was understanding and cared about what he did. I thought he graded fair - he was pateint. Hated the brats in my class tho
Big Mike truly is an amazing professor. He is able to engage the class with his lectures and helps the class relate to the material, which is stunning considering he's teaching pre-civil war material. I never bought the book and still aced the class. Attend every class and write a ton of notes and you'll be fine. I learned so much thanks to Mike.
fun class :) have to go to every class though, so you can get the 10 pages of notes that day.
An amazing teacher! I would recommend him to anyone. He refuses to let you call him anything but Mike or Big Mike and will help you tremendously. He is a tough grader when it comes to the papers and exams, though. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!
as long as you take notes, you should be fine. I feel like he was a fair grader. Got a A- with little studying or effort on papers. Fun guy.
Big Mike is amazing!!!! He is a great teacher, just take notes and you'll ace his class.
Very nice professor. He changed it up this past semester and let us have a multiple choice test, which really helped. Just go to class and take good notes and you will do fine.
Big Mike is seriously the great prof ever. Take GREAT notes, go to class, and you will get an A. He is really interesting with his lectures.
no book needed he talks soooooo mcuh he gives u too much details that u dont want to know or u'll ever need two exams two papers and 4 or 5 homeworks very easy but ver boring at the same time but oh well thats wat history is.. very nice guy tho
Tough on plagiarism!
Great teacher. Attendance is manditory, all important information is from his lectures. He is a nice guy and makes learning history fun, teaches facts realistically. Book is not really necessary as long as you don't miss a class. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone!
I took this class in Winter 09 and I have to say Big Mike is such a great professor. Go to class, participate, listen and take notes. He is such a nice guy and he wants people to do well. Macomb is lucky to have him, he knows what he is talking about and takes a personal interest in his students.
He is a good professor. He's engaging and extremely knowledgable. His research papers are amoung the most rewarding assignments that I have ever had in school. He does, howver, use a lot of foul language and inserts his own life into the class too much.
Mike is a great teacher. He made four hours fly by. I learned a ton even though the class was extremely easy. Tests are cake as are the homework assignments. The papers are simple, however, he is rather ambiguous with the grading. Oh, and he bought our whole class pizza!
Very nice. Really got you interested into history. Tests were somewhat hard if you didn't study your notes. Go to class every day and listen and take notes. Would recommend him.
He is a cool teacher. Class is fun. Your grade is based on five 2-page papers and two 5-page papers, attendance, and 2 exams. The only thing I don't like about him is that he really does suck at grading papers. You can do everything the rubric says to do and get 20% lower than a kid who does everything the rubric says not to do. Random grading...
Great teacher! he knows what he is teaching, how he lectures its very easy to pay attention and take notes. tells you what to pay attention to. your only graded on 2 papers, 2 tests, and a few homeworks. make sure you do extremely well on the papers and study for the test, homeworks are really easy.
Fantastic prof! Very personable, funny, and knowledgable! The 2 papers are the toughest part of the class but not too bad. He gives you everything you need to do well on the exams. Take him if you can!
one of the best teachers you could possibly have. Such a great funny guy and works well with the class. The way he explains history its crazy i never get bored and he always makes jokes to keep the class alive. Gets to know everyone in class and makes sure your not left out. If you have to take history take him best teacher ever
he's a cool and funny guy. tells lots of jokes, talks about his Italian heritage, his wife, and food. also very enthusiastic about history. he's not arrogant at all, unlike what someone else said, just acts silly sometimes. some people don't have a sense of humor though.... also, we NEVER used the text book. not sure why I bought one
this was one of my all time favorite classes, this is by far the best teacher that I have ever had. his lectures are fun which is very hard to say with most teachers, the class is pretty easy as long as you go to class and write down notes which is very easy, there are two tests which you should study for, two papers easy just start on them early,
He looks like Danny Devito and makes fun of past students. I couldn?t stand being there and wished I had taken a different professor. I feel sorry for Placco that he has to try so hard to impress people. He says ?you won?t find this in the history books? and that is never good to hear from a History Professor. I didn?t feel he knew as much as other
Mike makes sure that his students get it. If history isnt your thing, dont worry, he uses plenty of analogies to support the material. Make sure you get on his papers early! However, the class was sidetracked quite a bit on irrelevant topics. If you don't like it when professors that talk about their personal life too much, Placco isnt for you.
Talks too much about his life instead of history. He only got the class to World War II. I didn't think he was a good professor and would not take him again. I love history but this class was not fun or as interesting as it could of been. Also his grading on the papers are random and I didn't like "his" views or version of history he puts on his st
Make sure you are actively listening to his lectures, he often will tell you, "Pay close attention to this, it is number such and such on your exam".This will help you tons when studying. The papers are hard, do not wait until the last minute to complete it!Placco is very friendly and a great teacher. He was always 10-15 late for class.
Good class. Take a lot of notes. Textbook is terrible, but at least it's cheap. The two - five page papers are drawn out and boring. The tests are somewhat difficult. Mike is there to help. I can see why some may not like the way he talks (swearing, etc.) though. Not for everyone. I do recommend this class.
I thought the class was great and I learned alot. You need to pay attention and come to class but overall it was worth it. The teacher kept the class interesting and fun. Good job.
dont talk smack about big mike!!! he is one of the best professors I have ever had, and up until I had him as a professor, I never even liked history, but now it is one of my favorite subjects! He makes everything more fun to learn and puts everything into perspective that we today would understand thumbs up to big mike! -gabs
I Had Mike for 2100 and 2200 - Fantastic teacher. Got A's in both classes. Go to class, take good notes, pay attention and you'll get a good grade. I didnt even buy the book because you get everything u need from lectures. I learned a lot and really enjoyed the classes.
Great guy, easy class. Didnt read a single page in the book though just took good notes. Got all A's on the homework, B+ on both papers and a B on the first exam, still waitin on the second one. Even Missed a few classes and did the homework and papers last minute and still got good grades. Great Guy!
keeps the class interested with his lectures, keeps the class feeling loose and fun. Miss more than one or two classes and you're screwed. Book isn't used very much, tests are exclusively from lecture material. Swears occasionally in class (if that bothers you)
Big Mike is a really good professor. Want to have a great experience and get an A at the same time? Read the first day handout cover-to-cover, go to EVERY class session and take about 5-10 pages of notes, start your two papers early (and run your topics by him). Do this and you will ace the class and learn a ton of cool stuff! I know because I did.
Big Mike is a great teacher. Take a lot of notes and study the notes. He will also give you a study guide before each test and tell you in the review session what items he will exclude from the test, so stay for the review. Start your papers early.
Awesome teacher. very easy.. everything is based off of your notes if you take notes then you should know what should be on the test. I would prefer taking a tape recorder. it really helps just in case you missed something :)
Mike is AMAZING. He makes history easy to learn and fun to understand. He uses great analogies to make the material easier to comprehend. His tests are based directly off the notes and he will often let you know if something will be a test question. Not only is a great teacher but he is very relatable and funny too!
I would not take this professor again. Big Mike comes to class everyday at least 10-15 minutes late, then slams the door to get your attention when he walks in. He has an inability to properly decipher what you say in class or on essays if the words are not exactly the ones he is looking for. Prof takes weeks to get grades on tests or papers back.
He was a good teacher. He kept class interesting. If you take good notes you should do very well and he gives a study guide for each exam. Start the papers early and show him a rough draft to look over. The only bad thing is he is usually 10 minutes late to class and he tends to swear a lot but other than that he is a good teacher.
He was amazing, I HATED history before and I would refuse to learn it. Yet, when he came out joking, swearing on our "founding fathers" that was quick to get my attention. He made it fun, and i LOVE history because of him
An amazing Professor, I took him two semesters ago and I still remember everything word for word! I can take an exam and ace it right now. He explains history in such a way that it's interesting and fun! attendance is manditory and learn to take good notes. He's easy going and very helpfull, take him.
Don't need the book, he tells you everything you need to do in class. Must come to lectures. Grades rather harshly. Make sure on tests to use keywords he gives you in lecture otherwise you wont do well. Does not give assignments back until months later. Overall knowledgeable and entertaining
He is a very funny guy. He knows his stuff well and is very interesting to listen to. Wish he would have been a little bit more helpful to me. Grades kind of hard on the exams. Make sure you use his study guide it is your key! Just wish he did not have a personal issue at this time!
was nice, he tried to work with the students
I think this professor means well, however he grades extremely hard. He does not except any late work and for an online class he changes deadlines pretty much week to week. I missed a due date for a test because it was different than the final and received a 0 for it. I recommend you read everything and take good note on the due dates for his class
I went into this class not liking history, and came out of it liking history and wanting to take another history class and this professor again. He is helpful and makes things very clear when he is lecturing. if you pay attention and take good notes you should be fine in this class.
amazing teacher, easy to get at least a B in the class if you show up and take notes. most of the graded work comes from his lectures. dont dread going to class becasue he is the greatest teach I have ever had. very interesting and funny at the same time. He is the greatest.
His online class is the worst. He does not communicate with the class and offers no help when e mailed. He takes weeks to grade papers. This is an abstract class. There is no straight answers to any questions and grades hard with no feed back. Stay away.
Teaches the class very well and has a pretty great sense of humor. His class was pretty fun. Only problem is he takes way to long to grade papers and waits until the very last second to post final grades, pretty annoying but other than that great teacher.
I strongly agree with almost every negative comment posted here. Supposed to end at Civil War, didn't even get to start of it. I feel lucky I earned an A in this class,it was EXTREMELY difficult. Textbook is unnecessary. If you care about your g.p.a., please choose another professor. I wish I had. I did not get my money's worth for this class.
Do not need the textbook. Lectures are fun, keeps your attention.
Very easy. Had 3 hw assignments and 2 essays. he has only 2 exams. pay attention during lecture and take notes if you want to pass. he class is all oral and gives veryy interesting lecture. i would definatley take him again. DONT BUY THE TEXT BOOK. you wont need it.
I am currently taking Michael Placco's HIST 2100 class, and I can't get enough of it! I never had much interest in history and never really got it, but now thanks to him I have a whole new understanding. He's hilarious and interacts well with students, and makes you want to actually learn the material. There's 2 essays 5 hw assignments and 2 exams.
I would highly recommend Placco! His lectures are very entertaining and clearly delivered. His class made history "come alive" to me. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. Class consisted of two essays and two tests. I loved his class so much i enrolled in another. Very specialized in American History. Love him!
The good thing about this class is you really don't need the textbook. The guy is funny and makes his lectures interesting. He doesn't care about the students at all and is pretty rude sometimes. Don't expect any sympathy from him. I don't like him as a person, but his class was interesting.
I have a love for US History and Mike hisotry even better. Yea you had to study but most of the material is very memorable if you take notes. Also he did make you stay the whole class period but I didnt care because it was so interesting. Almost like watching your favorite TV show, you couldnt wait to see what will happen next week.
Best professor ever! He had 2 papers and a few homework assignments but a very easy workload. I greatly enjoyed coming to his class and I am sad that it's over. He was hilarious and definitely involved the whole class in discussions. Always go to class and don't leave early! I would definitely take another class of his again.
This instructor is the worst. If I would have known I would have such a hard time with this guy I would have never taken his class. He grades you hard and because you don't answer questions like he wants you to. He does not respond to emails. He sends back sarcastic emails when you he does respond because you asked him to respond twice. He sucks
I have never had a professor whose good completely outweighed their flaws to the point where they're not even there. I hated history before taking this class, but Mike made me love it. He doesn't just regurgitate names and dates on a test, he makes historical figures come to life. He grades and tests you as if you were a college student, not a baby
Great teacher, would recommend him to all students that need to take a history class. Lots of stories, and makes such a boring subject come alive.
Placco is a great professor. He really is determined to teach his students alot amount history. You have to read he book though. It is crucial to getting a good grade especially on the tests. He is strict, but if you don't goof off, and you are serious, he is a great prof and you will learn a lot if you devote your time and effort.
excellent teacher, relates history to modern day examples to make things clear, also breaks up all the seriousness with funny stories and involves the whole class in common discussions. highly recommended!
This class makes it awesome to learn about the history of Michigan but I could not pass this class even if my life was on the line. It is sooo detailed in work you can never figure out what you are doing wrong. The class average couldn't even pass the tests above 50%. I DO NOT recommend taking this class unless you want a C or below grade.
Hands down the WORST professor I've ever had for an online course. It's a community college and a summer class which he failed to realize. He grades obnoxiously hard and expects way to much work out of those who take the course. If you have a full time job I highly suggest you DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. The professor is on his high horse.
I have mixed feelings with this professor on one hand he made his subject of history very interesting. However, when it comes to his grading he is very strict. Im an all A student easy and scraped by with an A- in his class,I have never had so much agrevation and un-certainty in regards to receiving an A. Take this class with much caution.
Awesome Class! He tells history as a story and doesn't worry about specific dates. He keeps his lectures interesting. Gets off topic with interesting stories which make class a little fun. Test questions are written like he is asking you in person, which makes them so easy. and straight to the point. Not a blowoff but very easy going class.
one of the worst classes i have ever taken. He made his lectures very simple to understand, however the tests did not add up to what he was saying in class. Always gets very off topic with lecture but still expects you to know material not covered. would not take him again.
Best professor iv ever had!!! he is not politically bias, he does not make you remember dates, he makes history fun!!! If you are bad at history take him he makes everything so clear and his lectures actually make sense!!! wonderful teacher! and a very funny nice man!
Great teacher with great lectures, also took 2200 with him and he also was great. Would not suggest taking an online class with him however. If you show up and know how to take notes, pay attention in class, and study your notes for the mid term and final you will pass for sure.
This man lives education and is 100% hardcore American historian, you cannot fake what Mike does in class...he has a good style of teaching, and will break it down in various ways so you never forget the material. In my personal opinion Mike is the greatest professor in MCC, if you are serious about school and don't play games this is your man!
I liked this history class because it was different from any history class I had taken before. It was more of a history story class than a book history class. Mr. Placco was very helpful and has a great sense of humor. He is not a push over teacher, though. Take lots of notes, pay attention, ask questions and you will be set.
Professor Placco knows his history facts! In my opinion, he is one of the most understanding and dedicated professors in regards to the students success! He wants students to think outside of the box and not write answers verbatim from the textbook. A lot of work? yes, difficult? At times, then again this is college! A very rewarding experience!
Online course has too many writing assignments. I enjoy the material but I would appreciate having another way of sharing the information I have read. Voicethread, Powerpoints, or anything other than writing about everything we read.
Mike is a lover of history and a great lecturer. His extensive knowledge allows him to tell the story with lots of antidotes that really bring it to life. Don't read the book, just take notes the whole time he's talking...never miss class...start the two papers early, but run topics by him first. A great college experience from a teacher who cares!
Horrible difficult experience for an eight week online course. The requirements for this 8 course were extreme: One book report, 4 pages of chapters summaries every other week, 3 articles you had to read each week and analyze and comment on. One third of your grade is determined in the last week. His grading is all subjective; little to no feeback.
Mike is an amazing teacher. He makes history interesting and not just a bunch of date memorization. He is willing to help you anytime you need it. Come to class unless you want to miss a ton of test material. The papers are not that difficult, just start early, and go see him so he can review it. I HIGHLY recommend taking him for your history
Mr. Placco was a great teacher, just don't expect him to go easy. There wasn't much homework, just some that take a long time to complete. Unlike some history professors I've had, he does know what hes talking about and adds his own unique flare to it. Never used he book. All you have to do is show up, take a fair amount of notes, and you'll pass.
placco was phenomenal. Funniest guy I have ever met and he found a great way to put humor into the class to make it fun. Very very little homework. Just show up and take notes. You will enjoy your time.
Mike is a great guy. I found myself coming to his class not just for the grade but because I was extremely interested in the topics he talks about. And he is easily the funniest guy i have ever met. Great dude.
Placco's amazing. He makes the lectures very fun, and he makes historical figures seem like the humans they were. The only disappointment I had with him is that we didn't get all the way through what we were supposed to cover. Read the text book, take good notes, and show up to class. He's a great guy; you won't regret taking the class, promise!
This professor is long-winded and vague at the same time. He gives pages of instruction that still don't seem to narrow down what he is actually asking for. Requires way too many comments on posts of classmates. There is a book review as well as 3-4 weekly assignments, along with a 2-3 chapter summary essay due every other week. This is hell.
I can honestly say that he picks people out of the class and makes fun of them or constantly berades them. i was one of them. he talks and talks and talks but 60% of it is about his kid or self loathing comments or about how he is italian and christian. the other 40 is saying the same thing over and over. DO NOT TAKE. take someone better!
He was a very harsh grader. I did every assignment but 2 and I ended the class with a c-. Most assignments are due at 11:55 and if I turned in an assignment at 11:30, in the comments he would say this is rushed and I would be docked like 5 points. The point of an online class is to have thee freedom to turn it in when you can and not to be docked.
I will give it to him that he's funny, as for a good professor? No. He will sit there and just talk and talk the whole class and most of the time it's not even about the subject were supposed to be learning. He picks on students and has his favorites. Half the time he's talking down about himself, or talking about his son.
Mike is an incredible professor. He knows and tells things as they are quite humorously and relates topics to scenarios we might be familiar with for better understanding. However, he sometimes gets WAY too off course. the class doesn't require the textbook. He might offend you here or there. I wish I had more words to describe him. He's awesome.
Great class mike teaches history in a way that anyone would enjoy. He tell's an unbiased view about all the leaders and figures in history. The class is very enjoyable and goes by quick. I dont really remember much in other classes but I think the stuff I learned in this class will stick to me for life.
Very great professor! Knowledgeable in his field and is very resourceful. Would recommend to anyone!
Oh Mike.. This professor is the most humorous person you'll meet. His joke usually range from "dad" jokes to pretty dark humour. You must attend his class to get the notes. Be prepared to write a bunch! Don't bother in buying/renting the textbook. Overall, great guy.
Mike is a good professor. He makes class interesting for everyone. He tends to go off topic a lot (usually about his son) but what he has to say is usually interesting or funny. You'll take a lot of notes. Only tests are the mid-term and final. There's not much homework, but there's two five-page papers. He's no slouch on grading the papers either.
TOUGH grader. his exams are very hard. he tells you whats on t he exam but his questions are tricky. i dont recommend him to anyone. im a A-B students and had to drop his class. does not help at all, if you ask for help.
Mike tends to get sidetracked but is a GREAT professor. He really makes class interesting. I HATED history before and now it's actually tolerable. If you skip class a lot there is a chance that you would fail. DO NOT buy the textbook. You won't need it. Definitely will take 2200 with him.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Placco! His class was so interesting, he makes history interesting! He does tend to get sidetracked but his tangents are usually very funny. I learned so much from this class, DO NOT BUY THE BOOK you never use it! Just make sure you take notes- write down everything! Also show up to class, if you miss one day you miss a lot !!
good teacher, expectations are clearly listed. one book report and many discussion. short homework, but prepare to read. do your homework and score well
Mike is one of the BEST professors I've had at MCC! He truly cares about his students & wants to help if you have trouble. He lectures the whole class, which some would think is boring but he makes his lectures hilarious and tells stories which makes it easier to learn. I would 110% recommend taking Mike to anyone. Very interesting class&great guy!
His personality is great, he's easy to approach and very helpful. The subject is fun, and he's a good teacher. I don't know if it's because I took him for an online class or what, but it's waay too much work. You have a paper to write every week, a huge paper due at the end, every test is short answer. Way too much for just one class.
This class alone will burn you out. If you have to take it, dont take any other classes with it. And dont expect a good grade, even if you are an A student.
This man is absolutely hilarious! He likes to tell stories about his son or his ex wife which are usually funny, but then gets down to business with history. We wrote 2 papers, had 5 homework assignments, and took 2 tests, thats all the work for the whole class. He uses no powerpoints. Lectures come straight from his own mouth. Makes history fun.
Don't take this class if you have any other classes for the semester, if you work, or have kids at home to take care of. Too much work that is graded vaguely according to his own opinions and most of the time he won't tell you why he takes points away. An 8 week class had five essays total, reading the entire text and 3 small assignments each week
Mike is awesome. If you fail this class you do not take notes, or do the work. If you actively participate and actually attend the class you will pass. His lectures are fantastic and he is super descriptive and knows how to keep the class involved in his lectures. I'm taking my second history course with him and wouldn't take it with anyone else.
Pretty good professor, he is definitely passionate about history. Beware of this class if you have a full schedule. There is a lot of work involved. It is easy, however very time consuming. Read the book and you will be fine.
Mike really is one of the most chill professors out there. Took him for 2100 and currently taking 2200, and I can't see myself having anyone else as my professor! He lectures the entire class period, but they are informative, and most of the time result in hilarious stories. Definitely recommend taking Mike for HIST-2100 and HIST-2200!
Mike is the greatest professor I have ever had. He is by no means a pretentious know-it-all in a business suit. Hes unlike any teacher you've had, but in a good way. Mike makes you feel welcome. Hes funny, intelligent, and caring. His class is easy. I wish I could write more, 350 characters isn't enough. I'll never be half the man Mike is.
Mike is awesome! His class is an easy A if you take notes while he lectures. A book is required, but i never bought one and i still did good because of how good his lectures are... He gives you a choice to go to his office to look over your essay.. be sure to do it because he'll give you a lot of information for your topic!!
Assignments were out of hand for an 8 week course. You'll read the whole text book, have a review due every other week over 4+ chapters, have to do a book review, plus 3 weekly assignments. Grading guidelines were very unclear and graded very harshly. Don't take if you expect to work full time; most time consuming class I've ever done!
Mike is one of the best professors at MCC. There is a book required but he doesn't use it. Go to office hours if you're struggling, he genuinely wants to help you! There were 5 homework assignments but he gives ample time to get them done. There are two papers but there is more than a month to complete both. Take notes and ask questions!!
Mike is great. He's a real funny guy and his banter and jokes are amusing. He really knows the subject and teaches it well. He's also extremely helpful. He's really there to help you learn and get what you're paying for. He can get a bit off topic sometimes. There have been times where 20 minutes or so was wasted. Still, great guy. Would take again
Amazing teacher. Will tell you throughout the semester 50% of whats in the final. If you pay attention an take good notes you won't have to study. Don't need the book for his class, you do need it for online tho. Makes a dry topic interesting and bearable. Recites short historical stories to keep the material in memory. Got an A, only studied once.
Placco is one of the best teachers at MCC! He genuinely cares about his students and your grades! We had five homework assignments and two exams which were not bad as long as you took notes during his lectures. He is really funny and completely different than any other professor. His class really made me appreciate history and enjoy it!
amazing professor and I truly mean it! You need a history class GO TO HIM! He so hilarious with his stories, and even when talking about history he just makes it more fun to learn about it! His essay are only two big essays, and two exams! Not hard at all. Definitely show up to class besides his class is so fun you don't want to miss!
If you need a history class THIS PROFESSOR IS A MUST!! Hands down the best professor I had at MCC, would gladly take another class with him.
There are assignments that are given each week, but they are not due until the end of each week. Lots of time to do them, however they are not difficult. I would take this professor again.
Mike goes on and on alot about jokes, you end up not learning a whole bunch, but when you do learn you must know it all, we weren't graded on a whole lot so work hard on what you have. DO NOT try to cheat at all it will backfire hard. Gives out what exams will be about, study for a solid few days and you're safe for exams.
This online class has been very difficult. There are too many assignments and too much reading for an online class. He gives pages of instructions that are not very clear and he does a poor job answering questions. It seems like he is a good in-class professor but don't take him for an online class. I'm hoping I get a C grade.
SO much respect for Placco. He is so humble and literally wants us to call him Mike. He cares so much about the students, he is so funny, and he made the summer class way worth taking. I never liked history, and he made me appreciate it. He teaches by story telling and never uses power points. Highly recommend Mike for all your history needs!!!
This was one of the hardest online courses I've taken. He wants an essay every other week along with the weekly assignments. You will read the book cover to cover. His assignment instructions are not clear.
Professor Placco is a great professor. He assigns a lot of work, but that's normal for any online class. You have to write a lot of papers, but the good thing is they don't have to be really long. Get the book. You will be using it the whole eight weeks. You will also pick a chapter book out of a list to do a book review. Do discussion boards early
Great professor who cares about the well being of his students. Ive never really had a teacher as caring as Mike. Really funny and cool dude. Gives interesting lectures and sometimes get side tracked but its still enjoyable. Love the class and if I was staying at this school Id definitely want him as a professor again. Show up and youre good!
Very cool, grew up in the Bronx so hes very laid back. Super funny historical lectures. Great story telling of historical events
Requires way too much work for an online class. I LOVE history but this class made me not want to do anything at all. Grades way too harshly and counts what you didn't include i.e. "What about this?", "What about that?", the negative attitude toward it all got out of hand very quickly. Tries way too hard to be cool just in his newsletters.
I was excited to take Placco because his introduction made him seem like a fun and laid back guy! I was mistaken. Tons of coursework due and he grades incredibly harshly. He explicitly says he doesnt nag about deadlines but every assignment I have turned in, he comment how close I cut it. Doesnt respond to messages and belittles heavily on work.
He squashed my excitement about history. He graded extremely harshly, and when confronted about it, would pick and choose the questions I had when he responded to me, never explaining the deduction of points. He complained about my "promptness," (i.e. I responded too fast and got too ahead.) WAY too much work for a 3-credit class. TWO textbooks?!
Mike has been my favorite Professor at MCC, hes very dedicated to his career and its shown through his lectures which is not on PowerPoint. He cares about his students which is why class is mandatory and you will actually learn a lot from the course. Im very glad I had him for history. Hes a great person.
For his class; You really have to rely on being there to pass, because your notes give you information for your reviews. By this I mean, his reviews seem like they haven't been changed for over a decade and are so long, you have to scavenger hunt them with only reliance on your notes. I believe it's better when teachers have more thorough reviews
This was one of my favorite classes I had during my semester. The lectures are interesting and humorous, but still informational. The class is graded on 2 big papers, the final, and 5 short homework assignments. Placco is very helpful if you ask him questions. Make sure you attend often. Whether you like or hate history, you'll like this class.
Easy grader. Same format every week for online class which was easy to follow. As long as you put some effort into the discussions and review the powerpoints you're good. Short quiz weekly, 3 exams and 3 short papers. Doesn't give much feedback
He has everyone call him Mike! He is a very good professor and he makes it very clear that he cares about his students and their success. The instructions on all assignments are very clear and I would highly advise taking this class online. The workload is easy and the same each week so its very easy to adapt to a schedule.
I took his class online this past semester. All of our work was online, in powerpoints that were easy to read. Not once did I use the book. All the answers for the quizzes/exams were on the powerpoints. You get a quiz each week and an exam every few weeks. I believe there are 3 total exams and 3 total papers that you have to do. All very simple..
First and foremost Professor Placco is an amazing person all the way around. It's impossible to fail his class because he has all the notes you need online, and he lets you get a head start months in advance on upcoming papers/assignments. Also, he's very understanding, and the powerpoints/lecture notes he provides are your best friend.
Placco is a good teacher, but can be strict with certain assignments. He does a Snapshot every 2 weeks going over the info you've learned in that time, these can be pretty hard, every other grade in the class is very easy. Textbook is not really needed, but you can find it for free online, so don't go buying it.
Solid professor. His assignment were not confusing. Just do what is asked and you will do fine. The powerpoints helped a lot.
Prof Placco is a good professor. He's knowledgeable, kind, and available outside of class. His class was fairly easy-- just do the assignments and readings and you'll be set. He had very straightforward guidelines and standards, which are not unreasonable. Submit your work at a decent time with whatever else he expects and you'll be fine.
Hes great!
Professor Place was a good professor for this class, the main assignments were homework and discussions, the essays are easy if you read the book, I would recommend him to take this class
I was worried coming into this class with the work load I saw, however professor Placco was the most highly communicative and the work was very straight forward! He explained everything so perfectly that I never had any questions. The only thing I regret is not coming to speak with him for office hours, probably would have been very helpful!
First of all, yes there are quite a few assignments every week, and yes you NEED the book! I took this in the summer, and I checked canvas daily. The assignments are not hard to do, just do not procrastinate. He is very laid back, doesn't overcomplicate assignments. He is one of the clearest and most concise and caring professors I've had.
Over the 8 weeks in class you will be assigned 17 essays to write on top of your final view for the book which is another essay. This is supposed to be a history class not an essay writing class. If I wanted to go and write essays all day I would have taken an English or writing class. AVOID THIS CLASS LIKE THE PLAGUE.
Laid back professor, no exams/quizzes. However there will be 24 articles that you have to read & write a post or a little essay for each of them. Also, there will be 5 assignments based on reading the book assigned for class (350 pages-kindle)& 1 last assignment that requires you to write 4 essay pages, be prepared for lots of reading &writing :D
Do not miss deadlines
I took this class 100% online, it is very discussion board heavy where you have word limits and have to respond to others also with limits with an initial post due by Wednesday. You will HAVE to play devil's advocate sometimes and you will be critiqued on whether it was properly done or not. Had to write 2 papers. Great professor overall!
