Very, very harsh grader. Most people in the class were given C's and D's. People that were used to getting A's in English barely managed to get B's. Rough, sarcastic guy who swears a lot. Doesn't really tell you how you can make your papers better. Assigns a lot of papers, would not recommend.
Kinda fun. Grades really hard. But I'm a way better writer now. Would def take him again.
Class was fun. He is a good teacher, and I learned a lot, especially about writing. I would definitely take him again!
Great professor - but VERY harsh grader. I was used to doing well in English and barely managed to get Bs or Cs on most of my papers. He's a good teacher - and my writing has improved a lot after this class. Swears a lot, but class is pretty fun.
Pogach makes it so easy. and lets you rewrite ur essay until you get whatever grade you want. not the normal boring enlgish class
def a hot prof. but yeah- hes a great teacher, he makes the class interesting with group activities and you can hand in your essay over and over till you get the grade you want, he is very helpful and hes funny, he does swear a lot but its funny. the best english class ive ever had :)
For those of you who like to be challenged,he's a great professor. Responds quickly to emails and offers help when needed during his office hours. He may be a litte difficult, but you'll learn to write an amazing paper.
You gotta take this guy!
He is a good teacher but he is a hard ass on grading. Be ready for funny and outrageous class discussions...Lets just say Killing the Baby
Frigging hilarious!! Great personality and loads of fun! Id you dont experience Pogach at least once, you are seriously missing out!!! He is a hardass with grading, but he does give you a few tries to get it right!!
great guy! he really challenges you to work your hardest. actually cares about his students. mind opening experience! take him if you can!
his class is a mind opening experience.
HE IS REALLY DEMANDING, BUT HE IS REALLY NICE AND HE GIVES ALL THE STUDENTS MANY OPPORTUNITIES.. SO.. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM! IT WILL BE FUN
OH YEAH!!
Awesome.
Awesome professor
He makes the class interesting and I learned a lot. I woulddef recommend him.
Okay. Wow. great professor - one of the best in the english department. If you want a laid back class where you are free to express yourself..then take an english class with this prof!! It's not an easy course, and you have to work, but he gives many fair chances to receive a great grade. Suggested to all!!
One of the best profs in the english department. HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT!! Not an easy course, and he is a tough grader, but it is only to help the students do better. He is a fair professor with one heck of a sense of humor. relaxed and laid back environment.
Great professor! I would recommend him over any other professor I've had at NCC.
Very tough grader but definitely makes you see things in a different perspective.
Pogach has been one of my favorite professors at NCC. He's very knowledgeable about his subject and classes are always funny and enjoyable. He can be a very tough grader when it comes to papers, but he does allow rewrites if you'd like a better grade. I'd recommend him to anyone needing a literature elective or composition class.
AWESOME PROFESSOR. very tough grader.
Pogach is the best at teaching poetry, if only he offered a poetry class. He's great at everything else though.
Professor Pogach is a great teacher and encourages student participation in all discussions. He also has a warped sense of humor, but he is very good at what he does. So long as you are ON TIME and attend all classes you will be golden. He is a tough grader so I highly recommend using the Learning Center to review papers before turning papers in.
You are going to love this guy!! Buckle up, by far the best Englih class you will ever take. Get him if you can, you won't regret it. Yes, you will work, but his expectations are reasonable and his grades are fair. Great professor!!! He's pretty funny, lecture is always entertaining.
He's a cool guy, just if you take one of his classes, don't take too many classes the semester you take his class. He's a stickler for work. Don't screw up on the major papers.
the class is okay. the guy is kind of a jerk. he'll exploit all of your personal flaws...so better hope you don't have any. girls love him though. just take someone else, honestly.
He was not an easy teacher but i did learn alot and i like how he gave you as many rewrites as you needed on a paper. Plus he makes the class fun. I recomend him just make sure you do all the work he assigns
great class, teacher was really helpful and encouraging.
Be prepared to write! He is a tough grader, however he makes the class fun. Go with an open mind!
Great class! This guy is a trip. He makes class interesting.
I took Mike Pogach for 3 classes now and he is by far one of the best teachers I have ever taken. His classes are not easy, but there fun and very interesting. You learn a lot in his classes. One of the best things about this classes is that you can submit your papers a couple times to get a better grade. If his class is open, take it.
I liked how he made his class really fun all the time.Very professional when it comes to teaching and tough grader. Open mindedness will help you enjoy more of his class. I'd definitely recommend him!
Michael Pogach grades at a master level. There are only two major essay assignments, but they make up most of your grade. B's and A's are nearly impossible to receive, even after a couple of rewrites.
Prof Pogach is outstanding - clearly very interested and knowledgable about the subject, which makes the class more enjoyable. His assignments are clear, his grading is tough but the drafts make it easier to bring up your grade and his comments are so helpful - I definitely feel like my writing improved after taking his class. Definitely recommend.
Rather full of himself and condescending in his feedback. Helps after the fact rather than guide you to the appropriate learning. Continuously refers to his own workbook which is not an easy to understand guide. Needs to be a better teacher and guide upfront rather than after your final grade is in.
He is very funny but be aware he likes his students to get the job done on time. if you have any questions he will answered them and he will help you as much as he can for his students to pass with a decent grade, but of course you must attend the class and do not make up excuses for any incomplete job because nobody likes that.
I can't say enough good things about him. I had him for Creative Writing, and it was the best class I have ever taken. He helped us develop our skills, the classes were so fun, and he was down to earth. A lot of readings, but they're given for a reason, not just to give us something to do. As long as you tried, you got an A. Best professor at NCC.
I'm a straight A student, and I struggled to get B's on his assignments. If you're looking for an easy A go elsewhere because he makes you work for it. I think the only reason I got an A was because he knew how much effort I put in. If you take his class, do the rough drafts and rewrites. Listen to his feedback, it's good. He expects a lot though.
If you are not interested in literature and are just taking his class as an elective for graduation, take something else. You'll thank me later. He expects bachelor's or master's level MLA papers and picks them apart to the highest degree. He is not very clear in what he expects and I did not find his feedback helpful at all.
Terrible feedback, And contradicts himself with requirements very often
I'm glad I didn't listen to these (bad) reviews when I decided to take British Literature II. I'm very glad I took this class. He's very knowledgeable in the field. Pushes you to improve yourself. If you can't write a basic essay with paragraphs, simple sentence structure, and average formatting... you don't belong in college let alone his class.
I took this as a writing intensive course and there was a lot of reading, and preparation for assignments. Grading is very tough and papers need to be perfect! If you like to be challenged when it comes to writing papers, then this is the class for you. If you are a procrastinator, hate to read, and dislike writing, then this isn't the class for y
English II Literature. Not only was he an amazing professor, but he made the class very interesting. His personality stands out and engages the class. While he expects a lot from you, it is what you should expect at college. Expect to participate in class and have homework. The textbook was provided! He made me want to change my major to English.
You'll love his class. Not to much work and allows you to turn in your essays for review. Had lots of fun. One of the best professors NCC has.
Pogach is the best creative writing teacher I've ever had. Most will just sit you down and tell you to go at it. He gives you rules and guidelines and explains why they're there. He prepares you for real writing. His feedback is genuine and useful, and he'll help you if you ask. Classes are always fun, and he's great for a laugh.
His feedback will leave you heated, as he is really condescending.
Worst teacher in fact he is cruel person who is simply arrogant. Does accept fault for mistakes or shows a empathy . He thinks he is know it all . Unorganized , Rude, Unclear, and mostly importantly can't make his mind up for anything like the useless class it teaches
Worst person ever. Dose not admit to mistake or shows any care when changing due dates for this one time. Expects everyone to be master in english like his lesson is ever organized well or clear. I tired my best to help him realize that my assignment was on time, finds some other useless excuse to present a failing class, failing person heis
Loved him! He's absolutely brilliant, hilarious, and his classes are incredibly fun and enjoyable. I would definitely take another class taught by him. However, he can be sort of rude and condescending. He wants students to participate, and then makes fun of what they say. Tough grader, but gives you multiple attempts at assignments.
He is an AMAZING person, no real insecurity, not even about his BALD head. Smart, analytical and fun, he grades fair and just. I was hoping to do better, but I got what I deserved. I tried to bring him coffee that was a bit nutty, he laughed it off. great guy.
HARD!
First off, this professor is horrible. Hes a know it all and makes you feel stupid when you ask him questions and he gives you snotty remarks. He's a tough grader for no reason and his requirements for assignments are stupid. I wish I didn't take his class. If you don't want to be treated like you're dumb, save yourself from taking this class.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He bonded with the class, built relationships with everyone who tried, and gave great context to all our readings. RPs are easy, papers are hard, but he allows rewrites. Had to write a play, but it didn't have to be great. Loved it all!
Reading all the comments on here has be confused. Let me first say I am a returning adult student. I have taken English courses 4 times prior and failed all 4 times. In spring 2016 I had ENGL101 and I am now taking ENGL151 with him on campus and he is amazing. He is very helpful. He will push you to be better. He also grades fairly.
Hands down my favorite professor I have had so far at ncc. This is my second class with him and he makes English enjoyable. There are a lot of papers and he is a tough grader but he is willing to help you throughout the whole thing. He offers rewrites but no extra credit. Would 100% recommend you take him
I hate English but he made it interesting
I have no idea why so many people like this professor. He's arrogant, rude, and egotistic. He expects his students to be masters at writing, and will nitpick everything in your paper because he wants it to be a masterpiece. He constantly pushes his book onto us, and thinks that because he's published something he has superiority over everyone else.
I heard he was tough before I took his class, which is exactly why I took it. He wants his students to succeed. Without criticism, there is no room for improvement. He's not mean spirited, just sarcastic. It's the class I look forward to the most. He is helpful, inspiring, and probably the funniest person I've met. (He's not hard to look at either)
He's funny but can come off kind of rude sometimes. I didn't feel 100% comfortable going up and talking to him. The readings were not bad at all. Coming from a tough English 1 class to this class was a struggle. The teaching styles were very different and the papers were complete opposite. Overall wasn't too bad.
He is one of the BEST Prof.'s Ive had. He provides the textbook and lets you hand in multiple essay drafts to improve grade. His lectures are AMAZING and the way he breaks apart pieces of literature and explains it is mind blowing. His brain is like an encyclopedia; really knowledgable and dedicated to his craft. Really recommend taking his class.
TOUGH! That's the first word that comes to mind when I think of Prof. Pogach. If you want a teacher that will push you outside your comfort zone, and someone who expects the very best, this is your guy. I learned A LOT during this course, but it took dedication. I felt challenged the entire time, but I think that's a good thing...
he explains the readings very well during lecture but hes an extremely tough grader. He nitpicks everything about your essay and in order to get an A he expects it to be amazing. He actually makes it so hard to get a good grade in his class and because of his rude and sarcastic attitude, i felt very unconfortable going to his office hours
Pogach is a tough grader, definitely makes you work for your grade, and does give you multiple chances to improve your grade on papers. By far one of my absolute favorite professors I have had at NCC. He is sarcastic, but funny. Always has us laughing. You either love him or hate him. Everyone in my class. I would definitely take his other classes
Arrogant and narcissistic, know it all type. I have never been told my writing was my bad until taking his class. I was recognized for my talent and ability in writing all throughout highschool and was recommended several times to major in English and join the newspaper. This man saw nothing but fault in my writing. Never a word of encouragement.
Great prof! At first he comes off as sarcastic & slightly intimidating but that changed the more we communicated. Gave good feedback on essays & allowed you to redo them. Homework was easy as long as you read & did the work. Very organized & straightforward. Lectures are capturing & he helped me improve as a writer. Supplies a helpful textbook.
He's a great teacher; he really knows his stuff. He has a very sadistic and peculiar humor, which I found hilarious. However, he does want the student to become a better writer and gives plenty of time to do papers. He is a very tough grader, I do not recommend him for someone looking for an easy A.
Had Pogach for both eng I and eng II. Has a very sarcastic humor so don't take him if you're a sensitive person. He found a way to make lectures not too painful to sit through. There are about 3-4 essays per semester, but you are allowed to re-write them. Not an easy A but will help you get there and his rubrics are very clear. Loved this class
While this class has made me work super hard at writing, I am really glad that I took it. I am 29 and haven't taken a college English class since 2007. Mr. Pogach gives the opportunity for second drafts, if he didn't have this I would have failed this class. The papers are not too difficult, but you must work at MLA. E-mail communication excellent.
Professor Pogach is one of the best professors here at NCC. Yes, he will deduct points if you don't follow instructions, but this hilarious and brutally honest approach will help you succeed regardless if you are interested in writing. All you have to do is participate, do you work, and follow the instructions for the two portfolios.
You will most likely never see an A. He teaches by criticism. He does not give you options, suggestions (rarely) or information to be as perfect as you can be. He will simply say, "wrong", "off-topic", "remove this". Sometimes, he has even made me replace my own words with his. Is this not my paper? Not difficult class and deadlines easy to meet.
Professor Pogach is a great professor. Not only is he nice, but he provides tough yet useful feedback that will help you become a better write and poet. He is also funny, and will encourage you to attend as many events as possible. Note: don't miss any deadlines.
There is a lot of reading involved but it should not take too long and the books really help in the long run. The prof is really funny and gives really good feedback. It is obvious he cares about his students. Participate in the class, actually do your work and hand it in in time and you should get a lot out of this class! I would take again.
He is a very tough grader. If you are not strong in literature and/or writing, I wouldn't recommend. If your major is not in writing, I also wouldn't recommend.
By far the best English professor/teacher I have ever had throughout my years of school. His discussions made all of the material we read crystal clear to understand. This made it easier to write the essays. His sense of humor is fantastic. Always made me excited to go to class. He is a tough grader, but more than willing to help you pass.
BEST CLASS OF THE SEMESTER! Even when the class went online (COVID19) it was wonderful! The easiest transition to online learning. Professor Pogach is incredibly easy to work with and is there to help you excel. Lectures were fun when people contributed to the discussion! 100% recommend!
BIG EGO-On my final paper, my thesis did not match up with his opinion, so he gave me a bad grade. I am an A+ student and have always praised for my writing ability, until him. I had to change my entire essay to fit his opinion, and the paper was worth 70% of my final grade. At the end of the day, my essay was not even my essay anymore- it was his.
4.0 student here. This prof is BY FAR the HARDEST most nit-picky grader I have ever encountered. He can't think from the student's perspective and if he doesn't agree with you, he will NOT work with you. Rubric was unclear and will mark you off for ambiguous petty details. Gave me an A- for paper with 20+ comments on things HE didn't agree with lol
His standards are way too high for a 200-level course. His feedback, although helpful in certain aspects, comes across as arrogant. He looks for EVERY LITTLE THING he can find to critique. The reading is fine, but the book is absolutely unnecessary as the works predate copyright and can be found anywhere (Beowulf, Shakespeare, etc.). A waste of $40
I took a few of his classes and he is a really enjoyable professor. His classes aren't easy A's, but they aren't difficult to pass. Participation does matter, but as long as you do the readings and contribute to class you should be fine. I don't recall him being a tough grader, I got an A, A- & B+ in his classes. He is sarcastic, but funny.
I enjoyed the readings in this class and the use of discussion posts. What I thought was overkill is his tendency to nitpick your submitted papers. At no point did I think it would be an easy A, but even with revisions it wasn't good enough. Advice to the professor: I get wanting consistency, but your grading methods are overkill and condescending.
Pogach's Creative Writing class is the only class I have willingly taken twice at NCC. Despite receiving an A+ in 2020, I wanted to refresh my writing skills and took it again in 2022. I was not disappointed. Pogach, besides being a comedic genius, cherishes feedback and uses it to improve his curriculum. He's the best professor I've ever had.
Very easy going and makes class fun. He will make jokes especially if you make jokes. Great teaching environment given by him.
The assignments were not tough but the thing is is that he was very nitpicky like down to the amount of spacing inbetween words nitpicky. Personally, I found it as overkill and unnecessary. If you're someone who isn't a strong writer I wouldn't recommend him. If you're really into writing and want a overbaring challenge then go for it.
Pogach has very interesting and engaging lectures. Easygoing. He always pushes for deeper arguments and gives clear specific feedback on papers. Classes are entertaining. Always willing to work with a good idea.
One of the best instructors I've ever had the pleasure of learning with. Really quick grading and detailed feedback on every assignment and always communicative. Is very clear in Syllabus and beginning of the course about what the expectations are. Also gives a balanced workload of required and optional reading and references. Highly recommend!
Great person once you warm up to him, very interactive, we do story reflections 1-2 times a week, &he gives you 3-7 days to revise your work after he has graded it for a higher grade with amazing detailed feedback. I once wrote a reflection on a different story than what was given &he still gave me a passing grade + time to redo the assignment.
There are many mixed reviews on Pogach, however, I enjoyed his class and found it easy to succeed. He clearly outlines the grading criteria and his expectations. If you are unwilling to respond to feedback and actually try, you will not succeed. He allows you to revise after receiving feedback, but you need to actually put effort into your work.
Really amazing professor, only really tough on grading if you don't follow the rubric, he is very clear on what he wants and is willing to work with you to get it. Went out of his way to help me pick a four year university and helped me pick classes for it as well. Very caring professor and really funny.
When I took his Creative Writing, it was a very fun class. He was very funny and connected with the students a lot.
Professor Pogach is a great professor. He's a very understanding professor who has a great sense of humor. He really helps you become a better writer in his classes. If he knocks points off your assignment, read the rubric, it's not hard to get an A. Just don't use Ai and put a level of effort into your assignments and you will be fine.
