Funny and a bit quirky. Very strict, but fair. IF YOU DO NOT COME TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION/TAKE NOTES YOU WILL NOT DO WELL. PERIOD. Hw is rough, but preps u well. Lots of quizzes and they tend to be challenging, but they're every other week so you take in the material one bite at a time. Final exam is comprehensive, but not as hard as quizzes.
NOT an easy A. The only reason I didn't end up with a D is because of extra credit. Lectures are very broad and not detailed as well as notes in class. Homework is a few points for 30 questions took hours. His class is either a hit or miss. Test are SUPER hard.
I love professor Polcen. I took him for Eco 201 and will take him again for 202 because he is such a good teacher. His expectations are direct, and if you follow it, you will pass. Just do your work and show up, you are guaranteed to not only learn the information, but pass!
Expect lots of homework. Tests are difficult even if you study. Lectures are long. Explains the basics of things but expects you to read the textbook to grasp the concept.
The quizzed are so difficult even if you study or go over his notes. So much homework and online work to do.
Prof Polcen is very nice and gets students thinking about their own opinions. He grades material quickly and tells you exactly what will be on the quizzes and final (cumulative). Uses real life examples to explain lectures. I would recommend any student to take him. He is very approachable and is willing to help during class or office hours.
First of all, his quizzes are so hard. Most of the student didn't even know what was going on. On every class he'll keep lecturing but doesn't care at all about whether the students are understanding his lectures or not. And his quiz's questions weren't from his lectures so I was in afraid to get even D, but i ended up with C because of the E. Cr.
Professor Polcen was a good professor, but his tests and final exam were quite challenging. I studied so hard for them, but my highest score I ever got was an 80. Make sure to do the LaunchPad assignments and all of the assigned journals! Those two things allowed me to have a somewhat decent final grade.
Great professor! He was clear of what was going to be on his tests & some of the questions are word for word from the homework. He did a good job explaining material with current & real-world examples. Honestly, the people that have a problem are lazy and don't study enough. I came from college and this class is not hard to get at at least a B.
One of my favorite NOVA professors. His class is very fun and he makes things very easy to understand. My only issue was that the material was very dumbed down and I feel like it did not prepare me for Intermediate Macro which I am taking at UVA. But that is just the gamble you have to take when attending a community college.
Great Professor! I definitely recommend. I enrolled for ECO 201 twice and dropped the class right after the first class. This was my 3rd time enrolling. Professor Polcen made me "fall in love" with economics. I really enjoyed the lectures. Some students say the tests are hard, if you come to class and pay attention, the tests are not hard.
I took both 201 and 202 classes with Professor Polcen. He is an amazing Professor. His lectures was easy to understand and interested. I'm a foreign student but manage to passed both of his classes with A's. I wish there were more quality professors like Polcen at Nova. Highly recommended
His Quizzes are so tough !! Think thrice before taking him. He keeps lecturing but doesn't even care whether the student is getting something or not.......I was so stressed thorough the whole semester.
Great professor! I took him for Econ 201, and I loved his class. He made economics really interesting and sometimes put 70s/80s music on towards the end of class. He does assign a lot of papers, but they are all 1 page opinion essays about relevant topics. His extra credit questions on the tests are fun, and he gives other extra credit as well. I loved taking his class, and I would recommend him to anyone.
Great professor, knows what he is talking about. At the end of the semester, homework and journals turn into extra credit so it is easy to bring up your grade if you're not doing well.
Excellent professor. If you show up to his lectures and jot down all of his notes then you'll be fine. His tests come from all of the notes he makes. Also gives A TON of extra credit so even if you didn't do that well in the beginning, you'll definitely pass the class if you do the EC.
Professor Polcen gives great lectures and really makes the class interesting. Quizzes and exams weren't too hard as long as you study. Its not the hardest class out there but you do have to put in some work. Make sure you don't skip journals and learning curve assignments. They are only there to help boost your grade. Does offer some extra credit.
Polcen is one of the best professors I've taken at NOVA. Make sure to take notes during the lecture and ask questions if you don't understand. He's really nice and doesn't make you feel stupid if you have one. Do the LaunchPad homework and you'll be set for the quizzes. He also gives a lot of extra credit towards the end of the semester. Great guy.
Polcen teaches the same way every class. He writes on the board, students copy them down. Familiarize yourself with Macmillan Launchpad, with an online textbook. All the homework and extra credit comes through there. While I can't confirm he curves grades, I believe he curved mine. Nice guy, but you may need extra help outside of class.
Excellent lecturer. Uses whiteboard; no PowerPoints. Take notes--tests cover lectures, which sometimes include more material than textbook. Assignments all done online. Gotta do the work to do well! Take macroeconomics first; it really helps. No papers. 6 tests (drop lowest) plus final. Multiple choice with worksheet similar to in-class.
Prof. Polcen made me love economics. Awesome guy, very straightforward class. 6 Quizzes make up grade, drops lowest score, and they're based on in-class notes and online hw. Same cycle every week; online hw, one page current event, and chapter quiz. Uses great examples during lectures. Read the chapter before class. Offers lots of EC towards end.
Prof. P is the man, took his class for an A. Just participate and do your weekly assignments.
Quizes based on notes, pay attentiin in class u will get an A. STRAIGHT FORWARD assignments, may be confusing at the begining but it's so easy.
I have taken both ECO 201 and 202 with Professor Polcen. He's the best. His classes are fascinating and I have learned a lot. Going to class certainly helps you to do well and his projects are always interesting. Take notes and be prepared for the quizzes. He offers extra credit at the end of the term. Wish he taught more classes.
Great professor with very clear, fleshed out lectures. MacMillan software required with etext. Actually super useful way to learn the material if you remember to do it. I mostly did them during class. In class competition w/HW seemed hard for some people. Enough EC to curve grade at least 5%. I honestly don't know how anyone gets below a B.
Professor Polcen is the man, I've taken him for 201 and 202. His lectures are great and are exactly related to the quizzes and final. Launchpad is nice and if you do all the learning curves and graded homework they result in a lot of extra credit.
Prof. Polcen is awesome. Really smart and nice guy. He makes economics interesting. Show up to lectures because he teaches you exactly what will be on the quizzes. Uses Launchpad rather than Blackboard, and it's way better. Clear schedule and clear grading criteria. Taking him again for micro next semester because his macro class was great.
He is great as far as lecture goes but his quizes are extremely hard and you have to work for every single point on it.
Polcen is a great professor and really kind and relaxed. He is very smart and knowledgeable, however he taught the majority of his lectures through theoretical situations and examples which became very confusing. Make sure you study his handouts and the textbook for quizzes and tests! They are more helpful than his lectures.
Attendance isn't mandatory but you don't want to miss class. He's a hard teacher but a great one. Makes economics fun and relevant. Beat the market was lit.
He is a great person and kind and his lectures are OKAY. You have to really pay attention and know the material beforehand in order to pass his class. HIS WORKSHEETS ARE EXACTLY THE RESPONSES ON THE QUIZZES!!
Taking Marcoeconomics with him for the fall semester and it's going great! Hoping Micro will be the same, but only time will tell. Professor Polcen is a real gem who will teach everything we need on the exam during class. Some of his graded homework contradicts what he lectures in class so focus on his teaching.
Show up to class. Polcens quizzes are no joke, you actually have to study for them. I found out the hard way after the first quiz. Other than that, his class is amazing. He honestly made me start liking economics. Polcen offers a lot of extra credit. Solid choice for anyone who actually wants to learn... Which should be everyone studying business.
The best Econ teacher! I took him for both Macro & Micro. Take good notes & study them before the quizzes, and you'll do great. Offers a bunch of extra credit towards the end of the semester, which can easily take you up a whole letter grade. Attendance isn't mandatory, but don't skip or you'll fall behind. He made economics interesting! Take him!
Lots of online homework and he is very tough grader If you work full time then dont take his class.
Mr. Polcen is a true professional. He opened my eyes to so many things about the economy i left his class with so much knowledge. He is super funny and very relaxed. The subject isn't easy but he uses real life examples to make you understand his point of view. The extra credit he gives took me from a B to A. lets you leave early. I'd take again.
Professor Polcen is the best! Easily one of my favorite professors at NOVA. His lectures are extremely detailed and you can tell he loves the material he is teaching. Attend the lectures, take good notes, and fully prepare for the quizzes/exams! I would highly recommend him to anyone who is searching for an Econ Course.
I appreciate taking this course so much! Professor Polcen is absolutely incredible, made economics both fun and interesting to study. He is truly the best professor I have had in the over 50 credit hours I have completed so far. Definitely take this class, it's very important to understand these concepts, and Polcen is amazing at teaching them.
You need to know the material inside and out for the quizzes. He allows you to visit him during office hours if you need more help. Towards the end of the semester, he provides A LOT of extra credit opportunities. Probably one of the best econ professors at nova..
He's a legend he makes you feel like you can major in econ. Very laid back and straight forward class but you actually have to study if you want to do good in his class
Prof. Polcen was really good at teaching the material. As long as you took notes and did all the homework and readings, the quizzes assigned every other week were not hard. He gives extra credit opportunities during the last month of the semester. He is very nice and willing to help. Definitely would take him again.
Professor Polcen only sent out an announcement every few weeks. Very slow grader. The homework is spaced out which is nice, but it is hard.
one of the best professors you'll know. His class is set up as all other classes should, you take notes on what he writes on then board and that is what goes on the quizzes. Don't really need to read the textbook and the homework is online and takes less than 30 minutes.
Polcen is a great choice for anyone taking macro or micro econ. He is unintentionally funny and does a good job at explaining the material. Class isn't too hard but you do need to put in some effort. You won't regret taking a class taught by Professor Polcen.
Prof. Polcen is good at explaining the concepts. He does assign homework quizzes, which aren't hard if you read the textbook. If you take good notes and study them, you will get a good grade on the quizzes every other week. He gives us extra credit opportunities during the last month of the semester. Definitely would recommend him.
Prof. Polcen was a very caring and effective teacher for macroeconomics. There were a lot of topics and thus studying was required for an A or B grade. Prof. Polcen's lectures were crystal clear and he explained modern topics as well, bringing relevance to the material. Take ECO 201 and/or 202 if you have any interest in the operations of markets!
I took Polcen's Eco 202 class over the summer because of the great reviews I saw on this website. Because of covid the class was all on Zoom which was fine but he didn't do a very thorough job of explaining the information. I'm just assuming he is a better prof to take in an actual classroom. I ended up dropping it. His tests are crazy hard.
Professor Polcen is a very relaxed and I actually learned the content from him. His class never makes you learn concepts on your own, even in an online format. He explains very well and makes econ much more accessible. There are quizzes every other week, but they are very straightforward. Class is actually fun and he takes his time when lecturing.
This professor (if you can even call him that, is a bum. I am currently taking his online microeconomics course, the man hooked us up on cengage and has been non existent since. Lets cengage do all the work for him, and does not drop any supplementary material on canvas. TBH at this point i'm not even mad, just shook at the lack of any motivation.
Hes a great professor! He makes lectures relevant by using real examples and is very good at teaching the concepts. Quizzes are open note and straight from lectures so as long as you understand the lecture and take good notes youll do good. The hw is straightforward and easy. Its an easy A as long as you put in some effort.
I enjoyed Professor Polcen's class, he's a great Professor that explains the material well. However, I did find the graded homework (On Macmillan Launchpad) and the tests to be quite challenging, even with open notes. I'm sure if you good questions, review the chapters, and take good notes, you'll do well.
I have no doubt that Polcen is good outside of Covid situations, but do NOT for the life of you take this man online. He sucks, he's rude, and honestly blames the students for everything. No accountability, and everything was hard for no reason. Don't waste your time or money for online version of his teaching. My class average was 60%
Nice man but I wouldnt take him again. He's probably different in person but we would learn a new chapter for one day and then move on to the next. 6 quizzes and drops lowest score. Learning Curves, graded hw, and journals did help with grade and they were extra credit towards end of semester. Sometimes would get frustrated if no one participated.
I took Polcen's online class, he never popped in for any extra commentary, everything was straight online textbook, don't think I retained any of the information from this class, how unfortunate this class was, really wished for more from the professor.
I spent 3 hours of my friday night doing 3 homeworks that were only 6 pts. Then he gives the exams which are not really relatable to the lectures and are 50 pts each. Didn't really learn from his class and didn't provide any study guides so I wouldn't know what was on the exams.
Thought this would be a good class given all the previous old reviews, boy was I fooled. Super strict on quizzes and marks hella points for every time a person leaves the quiz tab because he caught his old class cheating some semesters ago. The quizzes were difficult and the class averages on them would be super low. Better to take someone else fr
Great Professor! He gave plenty of extra credit to boost your grade! So much homework but it helps you retain the information! I loved his lectures, they were so interesting and relatable. Do your work and you will do well in his class.
His lectures will help you a lot on his OPEN NOTE tests and he does give extra credit at the end of the semester to help your grade out. The only issue I have about him is that his learning cures are only one pt wile his tests are 50pts meaning that you're not a good test taker this class isn't for you. (he drops your lowest test grade)
Great professor, but you need to put in a lot of time to earn a good grade. He does grade tough, but makes the classes interesting.
I liked taking his test. However, his quizzes are hard at times. I have never taken econ before. His test is open note but not open internet. He gives many extra credit opportunities which I would take advantage of. One thing I would say STUDY STUDY STUDY. do not use Government website on journals. Wishing you the best professor.
I took his online course for ECON202. Lots of extra credit but the tests are heavily weighted.
Took this class because of his high rating but he is nowhere near that rating, should be way lower. Not helpful, doesn't grade your work makes Cengage do it for him, Quizzes are too hard and are nothing about what learn in class, a bunch of bookwork that isn't worth a lot of points. cant teach well. First class, I take that I almost didn't pass.
Pretty solid professor and he's laid back at times. Make sure you study for quizzes/tests since that's the bulk of your grade, and they're usually open-note too so don't stress it too much. Assigns HW that may not be relevant for exams though, so pay attention to his lectures. He gives out extra credit so do the above and you'll finesse.
Amazing professor and I understand why he has such a high grade on rate my professor but most of his grades are on tests- tests are about 50pts and homework is 1 or two pts I believe along with graded homework that ranges from 1-4pts. His tests are open notes but are still very hard and this extra credit may get you up to a C if you really try.
Professor Polcen seems like a nice guy but he barely interacts with the class. Only two announcements the whole semester, and takes can take TWO months to grade an assignment. He offers extra credit and is an easy grader. If you read the textbook and do the assignments you shouldn't have a problem.
Professor Polcen is a nice and caring professor . He's not a hard grader and provides a lot of extra credit. However, he barely interacts with the class and doesn't provide great feedback. Just make sure you study since the exams are a large part of your grade.
Very difficult class. Quizzes were challenging. It was hard to maintain a solid grade for the entire semester. However, a lot of extra credit was given at the end of the semester, which allowed me to get an A in his class. Objectively, he is a very skilled professor and the classes are enjoyable to attend. You really can't go wrong with him.
His class was very engaging, you won't pass the exams if you skip his lectures since everything was heavy and fast paced. His quizzes are not a joke, so study well before each one. He will drop the lowest quiz and offer a lot of extra credit by the end. Don't rely on zoom recordings, make sure to take notes since some will show up on the quizzes.
Professor Polcen is a great professor overall and I would take his class again but you need to make sure you're on top of the material as the class can move fairly quickly and while attendance is not a grade you will struggle if you miss classes, there is also a lot of extra credit opportunities as well.
Professor Polcen is a great professor and definitely is very knowledgeable about the material. He does not post his lectures online so you must attend class to know the material. Lots of homework and quizzes but provides a lot of extra credit. Make sure to submit everything on time! I would take his class again
I learned a lot in this class. Great professor all around. Tons of extra credit, almost too much. I'm gonna miss his class and him.
Caring and accommodating. If you show up for class you will do well. His notes are great and easy to understand and the lectures are really interesting. Great professor and great experience taking both 201 and 202
Lots of extra credit and makes the work easy if you pay attention during lectures. Would highly recommend as he was a great teacher who seems to enjoy his job.
I took this Microeconomics course during a 6-week summer session, he is very professional and grades tests within 24 hours. This isn't an easy A; you will have to work for your grade. But on the bright side, he gives lots of extra credit and drops your lowest quiz grade. If you put in the work, you will pass. I would strongly recommend taking him.
Great professor. Lots of extra credit assigned, especially towards the end of the semester. Amount of hw assigned is manageable. Do the hw, pay attention and take notes during lectures, review the material before the quizzes, do the extra credit, and you'll get an A.
I took him last semester for macro economics and his class was interesting and easy to understand all semester long. would definitely recommend taking him if you have a hard time understanding econ
I never thought I would like to take an Econ class but Mr. Polcen is definitely one of the best professors I've had. He makes classes fun, understandable and he gives a lot of extra credit!! As long as you go to class and take notes, you're good to go.
Mr. P, I never thought I'd care about econ till I took Mr. P made me consider switching majors. Amazing lectures super interesting guy, lots of homework but it's super easy stuff, tests are based on lectures they're easy if you show up, take this guy, the only 9 am class I ever wanted to actually be in.
Lot's of quizzes but basically if you listen to his lectures, most of his lecture is on the quiz.
Genuinely the only in person class I enjoyed taking. Try to participate in class, even if you're wrong he appreciates it. Weekly short paper, pay attention in class for bonus points on quizzes, keep worksheets for reference.
Professor Polcen is clearly passionate about Economics. His lectures are engaging and he will expect participation from the class. In addition, most of the material on quizzes/assessments are what's taught in class. You will excel in this course if you show up and do the assigned homework (roughly an hour to two hours a week).
Great professor who breaks things down well, especially for me since I am not strong in economics. 6 quizzes based on online homework and in-class lectures. He offers quite a bit of extra credit which can really save your grade. Weekly journal assignments are rather simple to complete. Great and personable guy.
Professor Polcen was one of the best professors I've had and I'm not even a business major. He's funny, engaging, and an overall competent professor. Make sure you come to class because the exams are of the lecture which isn't posted online. I started saying "alrighty gang" unironically because of him.
Professor Polcen is one of the best professors I've had. He makes economics, which can be a very dry & boring subject to some, extremely interesting. I highly recommend you take him if given the opportunity. I took him for both micro & macro economics. All information on the tests are from the lectures so GO TO CLASS. Extra credit too.
Prof Polcen is engaging and passionate about econ. Lectures are worth attending - he breaks down the material well. Use unstuck ai and the provided textbook to prep, and you'll do great.
Good professor overall. If you dont show up once, you wont get the lecture and it will be on the quiz 100%. There are 6 quizzes (the one with lowest grage drops from your grade) and one final. There's a decent amount of HW. Quizzes worth 50% of your grade, HW 20%, project 10%, final 20%. If learning by writing isnt your thing, choose another person
he the goat fr
Fav teacher by far. Attendance not required but make sure you have a friend to get notes from if you miss class. He is approachable and chill abt everything and his test questions come straight from the notes you take from his lectures. The journals/hw are very simple and very easy ways to up your grade. Tons of extra cred opportunities. Loved him!
Professor Polcen is the best professor to take for economics. It is a lecture heavy class, but he explains everything really well. Do all the homework and journals and you'll be set.
If you want to get a well respected professor then Professor Polcen should be your option for Econ because he assigns extra credit and gives a chance for everyone to pass. Also, make sure you attend class because you'll miss a lot of information by skipping his class plus his class is interesting!
Honestly, one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are engaging and filled with real-world examples that make complex topics easy to understand. He grades quizzes very promptly and fairly. I've taken two courses with him, each consisting of six quizzes and a final exam, and my experience has consistently been excellent.
Best professor and really nice BUT every class matters. Quizes are based on class material. Quizes will be easy if you attend in class and take notes. I failed him first time macro econ because didn't paid enough attention. Took this semester micro economy and now I am between A and B+. Again, he is super nice, always have office ours availible.
Heavy lecture, but his quizzes are easy if you pay attention to the notes. Funny dude and gives out extra credit.
Mr. Polcen was my favorite teacher in all of Nova.
Professor Polcen is a nice guy; however, his classes are lecture heavy so make sure you take good notes, I'd recommend UnstuckAI. He offers extra credit but he doesn't offer that many resources on Canvas. He's also a bit unhelpful when you're genuinely confused with the material.
Took Polcen for ECO 201 and ECO 202 and I'm very happy with that decision! Polcen is a great teacher and he provides ample opportunity to succeed in his classes. You are graded on a wide variety of things, his tests are exactly like the lectures, and there is plenty of extra credit opportunity. Best Econ prof you'll take, genuinely a cool/good guy
Stand up guy. Class was fair and organized. He reached out personally to make sure I did my ID check on Canvas/Proctorio when I had completely forgotten to. If he had not reminded me, I would have failed to do it and thus failed the first exam and the class. Rare that a professor looks after their students like that nowadays.
Polcen is definitely one of the best econ professors I've had. He is very caring and genuinely wants you to do well in his class. He offers lots of extra credit and responds pretty quickly to emails. I took his online 8-week course over the summer, and it was a very manageable and well-paced course.
He is an excellent professor who genuinely cares about his students. You definitely need to pay attention during lectures and take good notes, but if you do that you're pretty much set
He's a hard professor, not because he's mean; in fact, I find him to be incredibly nice, it's just that the notes are extremely different from the quiz and final. Also, DON'T take polcen if you work part-time, he assigns A LOT of work, and you'd be lucky to squeeze some time in between your schedule.
