Very clear and pleasant.
Provides all lecture notes online and is very clear and informative about concepts he is teaching. He's great prompting class participation and very approachable. You can tell he's very passionate about psychology and it's admirable. Keep it up, Mike!
I was a wonderful time being in Pollack's PSYC 110 class. It was completely refreshing, for he does demonstrations to improve our memory on a concept that was boring such as the sodium-potassium pump. I can tell he is really cares about the class and wants us to succeed. He is a excitable person and gets us pumped about human behavior.
This is a great class if you want to take one online or love being on the computer... Wasn't impressed with his gambling for bonus points structure either. Let me gamble for money, not my grade, thanks.
Michael is a great professor and a wonderful person. He is very helpful.
I'm really happy I took this course with Michael. He's really good at making assignments and lectures crystal clear. It's awesome too because he gives you the opportunity in class to answer bonus questions which can help out your final mark. He is also very approachable, helpful, and understanding.
By far the worst prof I have ever had!!! if you can take this course at uvic. He is so arrogant, and has no people skills. He lectures starring at the ceiling and when you stay after class to ask questions, you get no where. Also when you have to do your project presentation to him he stares at the wall. Clearly he is uncomforatble with students.
The structure in his course is glorious in all aspects. From the utilization of the textbook, key terms, and lecture powerpoints all aid in solidifying an understanding about the material presented. He nurtures the development of the course throughout the term, even when its kinda dragging on. Anyways, great work Mike.
lecture notes provided prior to class, given bonus marks if you go to class and have read the material. Michael made class really interesting and I enjoyed the class a lot :)
Great instructor! Very intelligent guy and super nice. Was always very clear with explanations and gave lots of good examples to make sure you understood. I wouldn't say his exams were easy but they were definitely fair. Attending all classes isn't mandatory but he gives out bonus marks if you attend and I ended up getting 5% added to my grade!
Without a doubt one of the best prof's i've ever had. Loved going to his class!
Bonus marks every class. If you show up having done the studying your grade will be at least letter higher. Each quiz is worth 2% of your final grade, ten of these is a free 20%. Each bonus question is worth 0.5%.
Awesome prof! Don't need to attend lectures - powerpoints are provided online, however, I actually didn't want to miss class because they were so interesting. Includes lots of interesting stories and case studies with the concepts! Didn't need textbook but it is easy to read. Exams were very fair, you saw 90% of the questions before the test.
By far the best psych prof I have ever had. Makes class interesting and engaging for students. Tests and assignments are extremely fair and straightforward. You are missing out if you don't take a course with Mike!
Attending class doesn't really help with your study, because he doesn't really teaches according to the materials which will be appear on exams. Though exams are super easy and clear. Every exam material is posted online and things being tested are exactly the same with those materials.
Michael wants you to learn. He is a passionate teacher. His downfall- lectures. Needs to deliver a clear speech and engage students.
Mike is a wonderful Psychology Teacher, He really knows what hes talking about. Few things though: DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. All the material is through D2L, You have an inclass test every week which is where all your grades will come from. They are easy, however the midterms are very difficult.
Michael is an alright teacher. In his Psyc 110 class he has you do a research project that is pretty easy if you choose the right topic, as you are experimenting on yourself (Avoid sleep topics). Quizzes and midterms are the roughest part of this course. One multiple choice question could have 10-30+ options depending on the lecture material.
The assignments for this course were very simple and clear, but when it comes to the midterm and final exam it's a different story. Just to give you an idea, the final exam had 100+ multiple choice options per question. This was totally overwhelming and made it very difficult to succeed. If I had known sooner, I would have dropped the course.
Mike couldn't have made this class any easier: we were graded on online quizzes alone - at home (5%), once a week in "lab" (20%) , 2 midterms (2x20%), and 1 final (35%). If you memorized his lecture slides, you could easily ace the course. Plus, super engaging, always brought chocolate prizes, and not hard on the eyes at all.
Mike is a really nice guy, but his lectures are non-essential (although they do help you connect concepts). The entire course was structured in multiple choice quizzes, so memorize the slides. He offers unlimited attempts during tests and allows you to check your notes between attempts, which allows for quick absorption of a lot of content.
Way more difficult than I expected. Two quizzes a week, plus weekly assignment, massive amount of information to memorize and regurgitate. Conceptual test questions are never explained well during class. Lectures are an overview of the material, lack clarification, non-essential if you excel at memorization. Difficult for non-science students.
Amazing teacher, loved his interactive lectures as they make you think rather than fall asleep listening to him drone on. There is a fair amount of work, although he does give class time to work on it. Very understanding and helpful! Tests & Quizzes are easy if you do the homework and put in a little study time.
Awesome instructor! Always in a good mood and passionate about the material. His classes were challenging but fun. He was great at explaining the material and making sure everyone's questions were answered. Friendly and personable.
Awesome class. So well organized it was crazy. Two generally easy tests a week that really make sure you know your stuff for the Midterm. Lots of marks for class attendance/in lab quizzes. Sometimes questions aren't worded very well, but overall he's very willing to clarify and help out wherever he can.
If you're good at memorizing terminology, then you're golden. Don't even bother going to lecture, because it's exactly what is on his slides on d2l. Also, his exams are in the worst format. Sure, they're multiple choice, but there's 50 choices for one question. And no, that's not an exaggeration either. Wouldn't take another class with him.
He's a fantastic teacher and I look forward to having him again next semester.
Once he starts "speaking Psychology", I cant understand what he's talking about. Lectures are not clear; does not put notes on d2l; required to basically memorize the textbook. Be prepared to teach yourself Psyc 130.
Mike is the best educator I've ever had. He is so easygoing, very friendly, cracks some jokes from time to time (and they are actually funny jokes). It's not a drag to get to his class, I actually look forward to it! He knows what he's talking about and he knows how to hand down his knowledge to his students. He's also extremely hot!
"Mike from Psych" is awesome!!! He is extremely helpful towards students and really makes you feel as if he really cares about your education and helping you reach your goals!
Solid teacher. Very knowledgable, and wants you to do well. Provides you with tons of opportunity to do well. I'd recommend to anyone.
Everything is pretty much online and just know the lecture slides and you WILL get an A, the problem is the lecture slide notes don't help out all the time
He will not test you on anything that isn't directly in your notes. He will, however, only give multiple choice questions with up to 20 options for each answer and very vague questions. After getting a few wrong you start to second guess your answers. Nice guy, but EVERYONE in my class complained about this and he refuses to accept/change it.
Two online quizzes a week. One open book, the same quiz during lab period. WAY too many multiple choice answers for each question (sometimes up to 30 choices). Michael is knowledgeable, but isn't good with time management during class. Lectures felt like a waste. Get ready to work in groups A LOT. Attendance is part of your grade.
Amazing prof. Crystal clear in his expectations. Go to lecture, do online weekly quizzes, do well. Yes, the multiple choice questions have a lot of options, but each question has the exact same list of options, which are the terms you learned for that week. I find it helpful to have the list there- easy to narrow down the correct answer that way.
Take school seriously and treat it as a job. Once you've done that, you'll love coming in to class every day. One day for review, one day for a test. Inbetween is YOUR time to do simple online study quizzes from home where he provides 100% of the answers if you are literate. Never touched my textbook, his class and notes were more than sufficient.
If you are a student who likes to skip lectures, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. You are graded on your attendance. However, it is easy marks for those who show up! We had 2 quizzes a week (one at home with notes and one in lab without notes) and although it was tedious, you really learned the content. The midterms/exams are identical to the quizzes :)
Very well set up class, has concept notes which the tests and quizzes are based off of, and supplementary notes that are very helpful if you don't fully understand something. (although I dont find that I need them often) He formats the class to the highest benefits for learning and memorization for students. Lots of games and interesting lectures.
Very informative course and very clear concepts explained well. Definitely will take him again!
MIKES A GEM - One of the most organized and respectful professors I have ever met. He's super kind and always willing to help out and clarify anything. TOO many opportunities to get an A in his class. Don't be lazy, study well, you'll get an A with minimal effort.
Very good teacher! Very passionate about what he's teaching. Excited about content and it really comes across in his teaching. There is quizzes every week, an open book then a closed book. He uses psychological tricks to help you learn and retain information. He makes learning easy if you show up and put in the effort. Would take again!
one of my favourite teachers at camosun. he's so clear in his lectures and i love how he engages the class in labs. he makes learning psyc easy and fun
Professor Michael, Pollock Is a teacher knows how to make everyone feel at home? My first post-secondary course and he takes the social anxiety out of it. He makes sure everyone works together and makes the classes and lectures interactive and fun learning environment. Prof. Pollock also is a great supporter and will help you.
I loved Mike's class! If you're not into going to class, you could skip and still do well, but I loved going to class because Mike actually makes it fun, and you learn a lot! He makes it super easy to get a good grade. Only hard part was the final: multiple choice but each question has like 80 options - just study for it like it's short answer.
Mike is a really nice guy but is clueless as to how to connect with his students. His lectures are bizarre and impossible to understand. Be prepared to teach yourself all the content.
If you have any kind of learning disability DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! His exam format is ridiculous. I did up over 250 concepts on cue cards! His lectures are pointless. He stopped making you close your eyes and listen to his stories which is great cause most of the class fell asleep. He is not prompt in responding to emails or grading the projects.
Mike is a sweetheart! His lectures are a little vague but he's always available for extra help. Weekly labs were a little frustrating but meant you were able to get a high mark! You have to put in work to get a good mark but it's not impossible, he's really approachable and kind!
Mike was fantastic! The course project was awesome and you have tons of time to work on it during lab (I only put it together outside of lab). Only thing is that the exams are all based off of terms and there are a TON of them. But Mike is great and wants to help you succeed! Definitely recommend.
I started off really enjoying Mike's class until it went down hill. He's the most unsympathetic instructor I've ever met and makes life more difficult. His labs are a waste of time and his final project was absolute chaos, with nobody able to complete it and him refusing to pass anyone until the head of psychology made him change his grading for it
Had high hopes for this class as the content is something I genuinely enjoy learning about. His lectures were difficult to follow and he changed his teaching style daily so there was no way to adapt to the format. Recommend doing the alternative assignment rather than the research project (it was a disaster). Be prepared to teach yourself.
Mike is a great professor to have for a first year psyc course. He gives you lots of materials on D2L in order to pass the exams, including practice quizzes that are almost the exact same as the tests. The group research project is very time consuming, so leave lots of time to get thru all the steps. Overall a great class and pretty easy.
Mike from Psych feels more like your knowledgable friend than your prof. He's super insightful, loves exploring new ideas, and is easy to talk to. It's clear he cares about his students.
Mike is probably the nicest teacher (or person) Ive ever met, and he really made it a point to let his classes know that he cared about them not only academically, but also personally. His tests and quizzes are really easy if you show up and pay attention, not much extra studying needed. Be prepared to memorize a ton of terms, though!
He is an awesome professor if youre into reading every night and a fan of group projects however I am not. He tries out a variety of methods to interact with the class but fails to impress me in the end because he isnt very clear on what exactly he wants done. In lectures, he doesnt directly answer your question and goes off topic. Such a shame.
I heard amazing things about Pollock before COVID, now online this is the worst class Ive taken. He is not clear in what he wants, provides vague examples, minimal time to ask for help. I feel like this class was a waste of money. He is very kind but online is not working, my entire class is left confused.
This semester, self reflections as assignments which took a lot of time and effort to finish but really helped me absorb information. There was no exam. He has office hours 4 times a week so he is accessible outside of class hours. I did not use my textbook though. Class presentations for research paper was fun and I recommend engaging in his class
Mike was a great teacher and I really enjoyed his class. His self reflection assignments were timely, but made me understand the topics better. He is very accessible outside of class in his office hours as well. Didn't use textbook though. Overall, great experience in Mike's class.
Weekly self-reflections took a long time but were better than having tests. Really easy to do well in his class.
Dr. Pollock is an amazing professor and person that cares about his students success. He was very helpful during his office hours and always went above expectations. It's not hard at all to do well in this class as the tests were very similar to the powerpoints and lectures. Also the Quiz Games that he made were golden!
Mike is a great prof, you can tell he cares a lot about his students and goes above and beyond to help you understand the concepts
Michael is by far one of my favourite Profs I have had so far. He is genuinely interested in getting to know his students and is passionate about what he teaches. He gives good feedback and makes Psychology a lot more interesting.
Fantastic prof. Gave us the option to drop our Research assignment grade from our final grade, but really holds your hand throughout the entire process. Amazing lectures, great to talk to, and super encouraging of his students success. Very passionate about his job, and it speaks volumes through his work. Love him!
Super inspiring to see how much work Mike puts into teaching. I was shocked to see his rating under 4! Taking a class with Mike is a great idea! He provides many explanations of concepts and even codes games to help students learn the concepts. However, I'd recommend getting an early start on the research assignment as its a lot of work (but easy).
He's amazing. he's so passionate and always make sure to help students. I still think that the research project was a bit long considering that it was a group project. Overall, I highly recommend taking class with him.
Mike from PSYC was a great professor! He was very kind and helpful the entire semester. The format of the quizzes, midterms and final are intimidating because there can be up to 30 different options for multiple choice. But over all it was a good experience and the work although time consuming, is fascinating to learn about.
I really liked having taken this course with Michael Pollok, he is a teacher who is passionate about what he teaches, he is creative in the way he explains and the game supports for learning are excellent. For international students it is important to know that you speak very fast and a lot!
I had Pollock for psych110 and psych215. He is willing to answer any questions and I thought his lecture style was good. He provides concept notes and practice quizzes on D2L which are great for studying for the exams and are all you really need to do well in his classes.
Mike's lectures made understanding some dense concepts so much clearer. He tells stories to lead you through each week's lecture topic and they are often quite entertaining. He is also so accessible if you have a question, and his practice quizzes are perfect for studying.
I went to maybe 4 lectures and still ended up getting a great grade in his class. I recommend doing his practice quizzes a ton of times as the questions on the exams are either the same or the same concept. His lectures are really entertaining as turns the concepts into a story, the online reason I didn't go is because it was early. Don't buy text!
Overall, he's an good and easy professor.
Professor Pollock is an excellent teacher who genuinely wants you to succeed, his lectures are engaging and easy to follow, he is a gifted teacher. I found his online resources via D2L to be SO helpful, I appreciated his "quiz games" and practice quizzes which helped me study and solidify the information into my mind. He's also kind and funny.
Entertaining instructor! Quizzes and Exams were absolutely ridiculous with the questions having upwards of 10+ different answers each. Found the group research paper assignment to be confusing and poorly planned.
Mr. Pollock is approachable in person, however; I found him extremely difficult to contact him over email as the responses were not helpful or useful and contradicted what he would tell me in person. The lectures were very dry and had more content regarding the background of concept note than actual relevant information. Lectures were not helpful
Everything you need is provided on d2l. He makes the heavy content of the course easy to remember. Really nice guy too and he does an awesome job delivering the material in the lectures. No complaints at all, such a great professor.
Another class in which the textbook is extremely unnecessary. Mike tends to get distracted during lecture, which isn't too big of a deal because he's a very knowledgeable person! The final research project was not worth a lot, and he really tries to make the course as stress free as possible. Definitely play the quiz game to study!
We must protect this man at all costs
Mike likes to tie psych content into relatable and interesting stories. If you love story time, take this class! He is also SUPER accessible outside of class time and really cares to help. All quiz content can take some time to get into your brain so there WILL be studying but you definitely do not have to buy the text to get an A+.
Michael is so wonderful. Super kind and caring, the course was super accessible online and his quizzes and quiz games were super helpful. Knows his stuff and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. I learned so much from his course and would definitely take another with him.
Mike is a wonderful teacher, in every way. His lectures and D2L notes are very easy to understand to study, they are very thorough, he puts in a lot of effort. His online quizzes and applied games are helpful and well done. He cares about his students and answers emails quickly. You will not need your textbook for this class to get a good mark.
He is a decent teacher and the course wasnt too hard.I found him slightly condescending when responding to questions via email. The way he laughed and smirked about his "game" of guessing what drugs homeless drug addicts are using was kind of disturbing. The "game" itself isnt problematic but the laughing really lacks empathy for addicts.
I found him very friendly and willing to help in any way possible. Everything is geared for you to succeed and if you do the quizzes online (open book) then the other exams are a breeze. I would definitely take this class and anything with this professor again.
Wasn't super excited to take BioPsych but it became my favourite class this semester! The lecture style is fun and engaging and he's great at re-explaining things or giving you tricks to help remember content. The content notes pull all the important info out of the textbook which makes for easy studying. Mike is a cool guy, no complaints here!
Michael is very kind. Grading is entirely from quizzes and exams which I enjoyed. Lectures are not mandatory, but are interesting. If you put in the time for practice quizzes to prepare for exams + tests an A+ is near guaranteed.
Personally love the delivery of his courses. They are fun to study for and made learning difficult concepts easy and enjoyable. Practice his quiz games a few times a week before quiz day (once a week) and you should do great. Wish more classes were taught in this style: they set students up for success. He's on to something!
Great prof love the online games!
This is a great course to take for your first Psyc class. You can tell that Mike has a real passion for what he does. He gives great resources on D2L as well as being very helpful in lectures. While it is a lot of tests/quizzes to take, they are formatted very well and there is so much great study material.
Really passionate about what he does, and gives hisbstudents so many resources and support, he wants everyone to do well
Mike is a great teacher, you can tell he enjoys his job. The 110 course involved a lot of memorization, but his lectures are fun and the tests are all multiple choice.
Mike is one of the best professors I have ever had. He offers a research paper in 110 that you can do for extra credit (it's pass or fail), and he creates games you can play online to study the material. He was always kind and happy to help during office hours. The class is structured great, and he makes lectures very entertaining.
Michael was an excellent professor, I really appreciated the way his D2L page was laid out and the extra measures he took to make studying easier. At the beginning of the term he advised everyone to buy the textbook but honestly, that's not necessary as everything on the quizzes/midterms is covered in his concept notes.
My favourite prof. Mike has inspired me so much in my studies. I didn't have a strong biology background and that made the class harder, but Mike explains the concepts very well. I looked forward to this class every week. Mike is non judgemental, kind and funny. I would strongly recommend his classes.
I have taken two classes with Micheal Pollock, and he is my favourite professor. Lectures are not mandatory, there are weekly quizzes, and an optional group research study with the opportunity to get published. Pollock offers a lot of support and guidance through the research study.
Super kind and helpful. Lectures reviewed course material with real-world examples. Weekly open-book online quizzes and closed-book quizzes kept me on top of studying. The final exam was multiple choice with a helpful practice mock test. Option to do a research paper for credit—Mike was extremely supportive every step of the way. Loved this class!
His lectures were entertaining, at least in the scheme of long lectures. he had a lot of things to help study for tests that was really great. overall would definitly take again.
This was my second course with Mike, and it was just as good as the last. He is extremely smart and professional, and I am very glad that people like him are teaching at Camosun. The syllabus, D2L, lectures, and quiz questions are so structured and organized that you can do well in the course without the textbook. Mike from psyc is my homie.
Mike is hands down the best professor. This is the second course I've taken with him. He creates games for students to study with, and the lectures are super engaging. Hes very clear on the content you need to know, and the tests are very fair. He is an extremely kindhearted person, and very easy to talk to. Definitely try to take a class with Mike
I was honestly nervous to take this class, but Mike is an amazing professor (as his ratings reflect). He puts so much effort into making his lectures entertaining, he gives you the notes on exactly what you need to know for quizzes and exams, and you can tell he just cares about his students. If this doesn't sway you, he did magic tricks in class.
Mike is so kind and engaging! Lectures are interactive & interesting as he uses case studies and jeopardy style formats to get students to process and apply the concepts. Weekly online practice quizzes and in-class quizzes were super helpful for staying on top of content & studying. Textbook is not mandatory, but is referenced & supports learning!
