He's one of those rare profs that can make dry material interesting. His teaching style is one of the best I've seen. Tests are reasonable as long as you pay attention. If you are a fan of dry, sarcastic wit---take this class.
Hands down, the BEST that CSU has!!! Has the ability to bring out the best in students and makes you want to do well. His sense of humor is absolutely hysterical! A "must-take" class"
Upper level OMS classes can be rough, but for some reason they are interesting with his style of teaching. Sarcasm and interesting real-life examples liven the class, and his teaching technique is unsurpassed. A definite pick for OMS students.
Super prof. Very sarcastic, but really fun sence of humour. Very helpfull and a really cool guy. Makes stats fun!
Great professor. Very helpful, and clear. I recommend him to anyone.
Great guy! Does make otherwise boring subject matter interesting and class is entertaining. Not the easiest class but scare yourself into studying for exams (HARD) and it flies by.
This guy is the best teacher i have ever had at CSU. He is the students professor. Down to earth, easy to talk to, and makes the subject worth studying. Love the guy. He is ****
He has to be the best teacher at CSU
he's really easy to understand, probably the best at explaining "math" (statistics) i would reccomend him to everybody, his tests compared to the homework assigned are a breeze! his hw isn't worth much (5 points) but his tests are easy and as along as u pay attention and are willing to learn u will get a B or above in his class no problem
Very good teacher, helped alot when we needed it and explained things numerous times
The BEST OMS professor CSU has to offer. Teaches pretty tough, dry material in an easy to understand way. Has an awesome sense of humor. An all around great guy.
This guy REALLY knows his stuff and brings plenty of "real life" examples to the classroom. Exams are "challenging" but he seems genuinely interested in helping students learn. Highly recommend!!!
Polomsky is the man. Funny as hell and very clear explaining stuff. Doesn't curve but his ability to explain stats makes up for it. Highly recommend him. Best prof I've had at CSU yet.
The absolute best prof. at CSU!!! Knows his stuff and how to bring it down to a student's level. Considering OMS as a major because of what I learned from this guy.
Quite Simply, Dr. Polomsky is a CSU legend. He won professor of the year in 2005 for a number of very accurate reasons, among them his brilliance, his razor sharp sense of humor and his ability to interact with students. Actually teaches material well (what a concept)and insures you understand and care about the OMS material. Excellent professor.
If there's a better professor or helpful person out there, I haven't met him yet! Why he's wasting his time at CSU is beyond me!!! This is a guy who knows his stuff and how to explain it in a "down to earth" way. You 'gotta take this prof.
Awesome teacher, only one in the Business Stats Department worth a damn.
If you really want to learn statistics this is the professor to take! He'll work you like a dog, but all the while you don't mind it, 'cause you're actually learning how statistics applies in the "real world". Polomsky's sense of humor is fantastic ... I've gotta think that in a previous life he did stand-up comedy!
This teacher was really helpful! If I wouldn't have taken him for OMS 201 I would have defintitely failed OMS 202 because I wasn't blessed with a good teacher the second time
Best teacher I've ever had at any school I've been to. Course is not cake, but he is always helpful and very easy to understand with his explanations of the material. You will really learn something.
Excellent teacher, no notes or cheat sheets for tests unlike other teachers, but explains material very well. Tests are hard unless you 100% understand material. Homework is worth 5pts makes a small difference. Good Professor but plan on spending alot of time studying
Awesome professor!!! He explains very details and is willing to help students all the time. He is the best teacher I ever had so far. Take his class, you won't regret it.
This guy is GREAT! He teaches very well, he makes you understand the material extremely well! He actually cares about his students, and he is ALWAYS willing to help! He is also VERY funny!
If OMS is in your schedule, it must be followed by Dr. Michael Polomsky
He is the best professor I ever had, I love his lecture style and explains material very well & he has a sense of humor & make us laugh all the time too. If you have to take OMS, he is the right professor and you wouldn't regret that you took his class. I'm upset that he doesn't teach OMS311 next semester as I would definitely take his class again!
What a great teacher! By far the best teacher at CSU. In this class you actually learn something. It is alot of work but if you do it youll get the grade. I recommend polomsky to everyone!!!!!! Best sense of humor ever!!
Best professor I?ve ever had. Hilarious and thorough. After he teaches it, you really understand it. Always takes questions (and makes sure to answer them), and really prepares you for exams. If you do the work, you?ll get a good grade. I?m taking him again for 202. If you have to take OMS, take it with him before he leaves!
He is a great instructor and he makes you understand and he also makes he class interesting to keep you awake and focused
Good teacher. Sometimes goes over every step of the problem and might seem excessive for the graduate courses. But definitely has a good understanding of the subject and gives real life examples to make statistics interesting!
this professor is a good teacher for someone who's familiar with stats. His teach are not easy and you can not use notes. He doesn't give you any breaks on the test. I would consider someone else if math is not your thing because he is patience, but he demands a lot from students that don't plan on making a living doing STATS.
Great prof., wish I could take him for OMS 202.
love him!!!!!
Dr. Polomsky was and will always be my favorite teacher. He always was willing to help me and had a great sense of humor. He is retired now and I miss him very much. He was also the hottest teacher i have ever seen.
Dr. Polomsky is awesome. Class was difficult, but he's always willing to help students. Does his best to keep class interesting since it's a requirement for most students. Just a great professor. If you have to take this class, take Dr. Polomsky.
Hmmm, previous comments seem suspiciously similar. Tests are HARD. Grades are highly curved. 2/3 of students dropped or failed by end of course. Humor comes off condescending and pompous. For stats. majors ONLY.
test extremely difficult, but the requirements and the material is taught in a manner that's very easy to understand. Very little credit give during tests for problems that the algebra got screwed up. There is some extra credit built into the course if the majority of the class is failing.
If u want to fail Statistics or get "D" in the class-he is your professor!Tests are very difficult. He never does any reviews before exams.Never explains how to solve the problems,so you have to do a lot of studying on your own.Sad part-all homework you spend so much time on is absolutely different from d'test problems!Think10 times be4 u take him!
Don't know what the last reviewer is talking about. Polomsky ALWAYS took a full day to review for each of the 3 exams (sounds like someone who didn't come to class very often). It's true, he's not the easiest, but if you go to class and participate and ask questions, you'll do fine. I wish he was teaching 202 next semester.
Class was difficult. Prof tends to get off topic if certain students ask questions unrelated to what he is teaching. He is a great professor, the class is really hard. You have to study and do the homework. Just wish that the tests were closer to the homework examples. Some people seemed to catch on much easier than I did. He has a sense of humor w
Absolutely ridiculous class (and I mean that in a bad way). The quizzes are worth 10 points and have 20 questions. He only has quizzes on weekends(online class), so you can't make any plans for the entire semester. His tests are designed for stats majors. yes it is a graduate level course, but not everyone speciality is stats. Worst. Class. Ever.
He is a great professor if you really want to go into depth of the subject and understand what are you doing. If you want to simply pass the class - chose someone else. The average in my class was D. The class was in a big dark classroom, so I could never stay awake. So, go for it if you feel like interested in subject, otherwise - think twice
Really tough teacher. Dry humor, comes off as rude a lot. Really, really tough teacher. Take someone else if you want to pass. Take him if you want to major in OSM.
He is a great professor! The material can be hard but you leave the class actually learning something. Homework is a must, it helps on the test. Attendance is necessary to follow the material. He is really open to questions because he wants the every one to understand. Also unlike other stats professors, he gives you formula sheets for every test
I took this prof 20 years ago and I did poorly and he would not give me the 2 points to get the C to move on. I took the class again with another professor and aced it, then had Polomsky for the intermediate class... It was hard but I aced it...And for 15 years into my career, I was the only person at my old company who knew how to use statistics!
Do not take this class. Does not explain SAS. Expects that one would calculate till six decimal points that is totally stupid. Very hard guy and a poor teacher.
very hard professor. Does not explain SAS at all. Mocks students. Poor teacher. Do not take this class
Last 2 comments bogus ... I'm in the same class and my experience is 100% different! You have to put the time into this class -- it's for doctoral students for heavens sake, and Polomsky bends over backwards to make sure you understand the material. The course is definitely no cake-walk, but that's not Polomsky's fault!
The single worst professor I have ever had. By far. Stated in syllabus that 50%+ of the class would fail or drop. I dropped. I'm an engineer and never got anything less than an A in any math course yet I got 30% on his first test and was carrying a 65% average on quizzes. What an idiot. The worst professor at CSU easily.
Dr. Polomsky did tell everyone that the online format for a statistics class was not for everyone ... it worked out very well for me. You do have to put a lot of work into this course, and ask lots of questions on the discussion board. Polomsky is very quick to respond to questions, and his exams are very fair if you put enough time into the course
OSM 311 and 201 I got an A in. This class? Barely scrapping a C. He is a good teacher, but exams are very hard. More importantly however, I feel I have learned easily twice as much as in the other two req'd OSM courses. I wish the grade would reflect that though. He is a bit condescending and has grumpy old guy humor.
Went into really good detail on the topics. He loves when you participate in the class.
Really good professor, one of my favorites at CSU and I'm taking his class next semester also. Knows his material very well and is able to explain well. Material was dry a lot of the time, but he is very funny and makes it enjoyable although his humor can be crude at times.
Dr. Polomsky is one of the best teachers I've had at CSU. His expectations are clear, he grades fairly, and is more than willing to help students who are having difficulty with the material. He genuinely appreciates students who participate in class, prepare for lectures, and are willing to put time and effort into their homework. Great teacher!
I see 2 negative comments for a doctoral course. Those two should have paid some attention in their 200 and 500 level courses. His exams were 500 level and as a doctorate student, one should be able to answer the questions while asleep.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Don't be intimidated by his sarcastic sense of humor. He loves student participation and enjoys helping you any way that he can. The material is very difficult, but if you go to class every day, take detailed notes on his power point slides, you'll be fine. I definitely recommend him as a professor!!
One of the best professors I've ever had. Don't be intimidated or thrown off by his sarcastic humor. He is very interested in helping you succeed and loves student interaction. The subject material is difficult, but if you go to class every day and take detailed notes on his powerpoint slides, you'll be fine. I definitely recommend this professor!!
One of my favorite professors at CSU. He's funny (crude humor at times), knows his material, passionate about it, and wants students to learn. He does not just hand out grades, you earn it. Homework is fun and tests are based off of same type of problems. Dry material at times. You do have to work, but it's a rewarding class. Highly recommend him.
Extremely knowledgeable, and thoroughly explains concepts and problems. His PPT's really break down concepts, along with his working of problems on the board. Class attendance not mandatory, but if you want to grasp the material it's a must. Dry, sarcastic humor - love it! I wish I could have had him for 202!
Disagreeing with the previous 2 bad comments about (the same)OSM 733 course, I can say that I learned a lot in this class, and Dr. Polomsky does take his time to thoroughly explain the material, which rarely happens in a doctoral level course. Knowledgeable, dedicated, interesting, talented professor. Would recommend to anyone who wants to learn!
Out of touch with the business world and nothing is practically applied to real world examples. 30 students started the class, 11 did not drop by the end. Boring, unhelpful, terrible tasteless humor, no business experience since the 80's. Avoid at all costs the guy needs to retire, CSU is a joke. And this professor is terrible even for CSU.
Sounds like sour grapes for my fellow classmate below. Polomsky is the epitomy of practical experience, and this student is full of BS about his humor ... it's an online class and the only conversations with Polomsky were on Blackboard discussion boards, where he clearly and quickly answered everyone's questions! I learned a ton from this guy!
I'm not sure if it's the instructor or he way the class is set up, but here is the experience of OSM 503 online: 1) There is no assigned, graded homework. This means you have NO IDEA how you're doing until you take a test and no consistent reward from hard work throughout the semester. 2) There is no discussion. None.
Homework was graded on completion with no answers given unless you went to his office hours. Homework questions are from the book. Makes his own LONG PowerPoint presentations. He knows the material but does not explain it well to those who do not. Took the first test got less than 15% had to withdraw & plan on taking another semester.
The class isn't easy but he goes above and beyond to help students succeed. Very good notes that he goes over in detail during the lectures, so attendance is important but not required. The homework is very long but does help you learn. He's genuinely a nice and funny guy and I think he's misunderstood as some old grump, which isn't true.
I don't know how anyone could cover stats better. His lectures are very clear and his notes are excellent. All the notes and course materials are all posted online and the class is extremely well organized. He's also a super fast grader. He posted the grades the same day we took the test!
Hardest course I have ever taken. But I learned so much since this is my major and it was worth every penny. Must go to class to know what's going on, he knows his stuff! Hilarious guy and was super sarcastic, loved talking to him in his office. For sure picking him as a professor again!
One bad test and you need to consider dropping. Not very helpful. Does not provide HW solutions unless you go look at them in his office. He knows his stuff but I feel he needs to update his teaching style. All teaching is done straight through powerpoint slides that are probably 10 years old. No curve whatsoever. Good luck.
Covered second half of chapter Monday 8-915pm and tested Wednesday, leaving only one day to complete the massive homework for that chapter and study that part of the chapter as well, which resulted in 2/3 class failure. Too intense timeline for the way he tests and grades.
Tough exams, but hey, I decided to major in operations management and I want to learn everything about forecasting that I can. It's certainly not as easy as the other OSM classes, but I'm really learning a lot with him. Great job and highly recommend.
Open discussion never happens and teacher knows little outside of the textbook. Teaches math not business.
Great guy, super approachable, showed us how we will use business statistics in the real world. I am taking him for stats 2 this semester, and I can't say enough good things about this prof!
He's the best professor I had in 8 years. I failed half a semester before coming to him and saying, "Can this be done?" He gives you the resources to pass, it's up to you to use them. I took every course I could with him after that. He will tell you, he had no affinity for me but I wore him down! Ask for help and you will get it, come to class!!
Polomsky is a very good professor in my opinion. He makes clear his expectations. He also gives materials for you to practice for the test. Practice the materials, understand the concept and you will be fine. OSM 202 is one of the toughest classes i have taken, so basically one needs to put in extra. Also do the homework its important.
Dr. Polosmky is a great teacher. he has a dry personality, but is so funny. great one liners. he expects a lot from his students, but gives you all the tools to do well.
This course was difficult, but Dr. Polomsky makes his expectations clear and resources to succeed accessible. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you skip, you likely won't pass. Take full advantage of the tutors and his office hours. He has a great sense of humor, which makes class more enjoyable!
Overall he's an "OK" professor. I had OSM 202 with him and it was one of the hardest classes I took at CSU. He definitley makes the class harder than it has to be which is a bummer. 3 exams are tough and worth 75% of the total grade, 10% HW/15% labs. Don't be afraid to ask for help!!
A real good guy. I also had him for STATS 1. You have to really work for your grade, but you learn.
A lot of material for 6 weeks summer semester. But it is possible to get it out of the way. Dr. Polomsky is very helpful, explains the material clearly and simple. He wants his students to learn and have a good grade. He is very knowledgeable and has a good personality. I would take him again.
I've had the opportunity to take two Stats courses under Dr. Polomsky, Stats I was online and Stats II (OSM 202) was on campus. If given the option, DEFINITELY take him in person. As difficult and as dry as the material is, he does a great job presenting. Very experienced/smart & and you can tell! He was a lot funnier in class than online. :)
Polomsky is a legend. Pretty sure he's retiring soon, but he's my favorite professor ever. Go to class; just reading his handouts isn't enough. This class is NOT that hard if you listen in the lectures and do a little bit of work. I put in a moderate amount of effort and got an A. He's a really nice guy, and a great professor. I recommend.
Online classes aren't meant for every professor. I see many students say he is funny in class, but that does not translate to online courses at all. There is no teaching being done at all. It's all self learning. You do get multiple chances on homework questions but exams are not as lenient. There is no makeup work at all for any reason.
A lot of online courses can be tough, especially if they involve math. Dr. P's video lectures are phenomenal, and he is super-quick to respond to my questions on the discussion board. It's a lot of material to cover in 6 weeks, but he does his best to help you succeed. I hope that he teaches OSM 202 before he retires!
There's a lot of material and only 6 weeks to do it. Polomsky does a good job with his video lectures, but I sure wish that the OSM department had some tutoring available. He is quick to respond to emails, and seems like he cares about how the class is doing.
Tough for an online class, but if I'm being honest, Cleveland State was on a Pass/Fail system due to the COVID-19 things, so all I needed to get was a D in order to pass the course. I really didn't have to bust my butt to get the D and pass the course. Sorry, Dr. Polomsky!
Tests are wicked hard, but he gave us practice tests that were his actual past exams so that we knew what to expect. Never uses the same test twice, so Chegg is useless during his exams.
The worst ever do not take him. His rating is deceiving, his lectures are useless videos. His review exams are graded. Do not take him, I repeat do not take him he has no idea what he is doing
Because of the COVID, all classes are online. Polomsky does a great job with his video lectures. There is a lot of homework and the exam dates and times are rigid, but the class really is not that difficult. It's hard finding the motivation to study on your own when you're not used to online classes.
This is an online MBA class in business stats. Dr. P's video lectures are phenomenal, as are the handouts that go along with them!!! For each exam he gives us sets of actual questions from past exams so that we can simulate what our exams will be like. Not a big fan of taking stats online, but Dr. P. does a great job and I'm learning a ton!
Dr. Polomsky is retired, and it was a tremendous loss for CSU students. I had him when he was battling throat cancer, and he fought like crazy to maintain his voice while he was going through radiation therapy. He was a student's professor, always trying to find ways to motivate his students. Best wishes for your retirement, Dr. Polomsky!
