He's an awesome teacher! Makes the class go by quickly and is very clear in his teaching! I would totally recommend taking this professor.
Nice, but very hard on grading! Learn A LOT!!!
Test are hard, lots of HW, but it's very easy to get atleast a B if you do the work.
He knows the subject. Tests are hard. No Curve!!! Do the work and you can at least get a B.
I learned alot in this class. He teaches really well, I wish more professors were like him.
He is so cool. Great Help! I strongly recommend him for this class as he is the best. Know the text book, u know the exams. Do your homework, attend the lectures and easily pass the class.
damn good teacher its really hard to find a teacher like this. i think leventhal should learn from him. mr. popowits is the best that ever happened to the acting dept of UIC. he is funny makes class enjoyable and a friendly environment.
awesome guy
He is hot, very good in teaching, classes are also interesting to attend. But the project in 475 is very hard. And so is the grading. and on top of that he never curves. If he even curve with few points, anyone can increase grade.
The BEST TEACHER EVER!This guy is cool.He knows how to teach, even though lectures get boring sometimes. The class is easy. one BIG project and 2 exams. Mid-term is tough, Final is easy. But I learned a lot in his class. Take him because he is the only one that teach this class. Very laid-back professor. Best actg. prof. by far.
Pretty good professor. Teaches the useful stuff in his classes. Learn a lot, especially during the final projects. Tough grader, though.
This is one of the best professors in the accounting department (LeClere is the other). He's funny, gives good lectures, and keeps the class moving. If you stick with the reading and do your 2 projects, you'll get an A or B no question.
Took Actg 474 and Actg 475 with prof. Popowits. Great teacher, knows the subject, willing to talk to you after class, lectures are very funny and informative. He NEVER curves. 90 + for A, 80+ for B, etc. Both class projects were very time consuming and not easy. Need to spend a lot of time doing projects, homework in both classes. Got a very hard A.
A very good professor, hard on projects but very approachable in case of any difficulty. Recommended for Actg.474
Great professor--very friendly and approachable. Midterms were of moderate difficulty, but a 'B' is attainable if you read the book thoroughly. Projects are difficult and very time-consuming. The first project was the most tedious--if you wait until the last minute, you will get owned.
Tedious class. you have to do well in all of those tedious projects in order to get an A in this class. In my experience, this class took up most of my weekend time. I had to sacrifice time for other more important classes for completeness of those projects. If i had choice, i would not go for this class, but IT IS A REQUIREMENT. But he is excellen
Popowits is still the best that the Accounting Department at UIC has to offer. If only some other professors would learn to teach like him.
class is quite time consuming and projects are long, but I wouldn't say it's hard. Professor is available for any questions and quite helpful. I would take another class with him.
He's hot and funny. Lethal compination. Very helpful with problems and approachable. I would recommend his class to anyone. Final project is time consuming but he's available for help. :)
In my opinion a little bit arrogant...He is just ok...
I took 474, 475, and his grad class. This guy is amazing. You are doing yourself a disservice if you do not take one of his courses. He is passionate, funny, and interesting. He is very clear with his expectations and is always available for help. READ THE BOOK!!!! He tests heavily on it. Hands down my fave UIC prof.
I took both 474/475 with Prof. Popowits and he is definitely the best teacher at UIC. smart, funny, nice and very helpful. The final project is time consuming but you learn a lot.
I totally agree with the previous comment. He is very helpful, gives crystal clear explanations during class exercises, homework and project. Project is time consuming but it does put everything together that we learn throughout the semester. He is funny and I enjoyed his class. TAKE HIM!!!!
great teacher, his classes are lengthy. he goes over all the assignments in class so show up to all classes, only once a week. funny guy, interesting topics covered.
Get ready for a A LOT A LOT of homework and pretty hard exams! Average on the exam was 65%! But overall not a bad class!
Literally the coolest dude on the planet. Challenging class but you learn a lot. He is an awesome professor.
What an awesome teacher. Prbly my favorite at UIC. Hes a bit challenging and his tests are really hard and the class has a lot of work but it was worth it. Hes hilarious and a good guy.
Did not like the structure of the class. Very boring and some hw problems are ambiguous and his TA is very strict when it comes to grading. Wish there were more instructors taught the class. If I had an option to take the class with another instructor I would definitely take it.The problem with this guy is that he has been teaching so long that he
THis class has an hugeeeeeeee amount of works even compare to uic's 315 accting class, but if you always keep up with it and finish it earlier, you should at least get a B if you put oon some effort. His lecture is useless for exams, but it's actually pretty useful for your future career.
Prof. Popowits is great and tries to make going to class as painless as possible. That said, sitting in one place for 3 hours is border line torture. The work isn't exactly difficult, just incredibly tedious and time consuming. If you don't spend time doing the hw/projects, you probably won't do well. Exams are also fairly difficult. Learned a lot.
He is an Awesome professor for 474, hard for 475, but super hard for 494. 494 should not be to hard but he makes it very hardd..i would suggest to take some other elective for an easy A.
Very useful and practical class for those who want a real or hand-on experience.
Awesome Professor, learned tons of useful skill in life and in career. This Professor is the best instructor in the accounting department!
Barely anyone took notes when I took this class in SP2010. You definitely need to pay attention if you do not take notes. Do the Homeworks! They're critical to understanding MS Access. Read and understand because it can be a challenge. The mid-term is the toughest portion of 475 for most. Final project is fun and rewarding.
A lot of work in the beginning b/c of the SUA project. Easy B, but for an A you'll work hard.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR!
Great time learning skills that are critical and will directly help my personal fortune.
Great Class. Really Helped me.
I loved this class! Extremely useful and fun.
Whoa! DJ Popenfresh you need to update that picture! Anyway, good class, nice guy. That is all.
One of the best acct classes you'll take at UIC. Good professor, and you'll learn some valuable stuff. Midterm was hard, final was easier. Take him, he's awesome. Reminds me of Michael Westen from Burn Notice for some reason!
Best prof. ever. if you didn't take improvisation class then u missed a lot.
make sure you take this class either in your first semester or your last. Either ways it will be extremely helpful
A very helpful and informative class. Applicable in my daily life.
The only class I'll miss going to every week: MBA 590 Leadership and Improvisation. Very useful, I wish I've taken it earlier.
At first I thought I would hate this class. I took it on others' recommendations. I had to miss a class near the end of the semester and it really bummed me out. Bar none, the best class I have EVER taken. Great Prof. and great classmates.
Best Professor in the Accounting Department, he can actually teach and he's interesting. The SUA is time-consuming (especially last part), the tests require you to actually read the entire chapters and understand it, and Peachtree is relatively easy. Only bad thing is the timing(Class meets once a week for 2 hours 20 minutes once a week).
I second another comment I just read, It is the only class I will miss going to (Improv and Leadership). Great class and great teacher. Make sure you get to take one of his classes while your at the school.
This is one of the most useful & practical classes for business students to take. Be prepared to stretch your comfort zone in a safe & welcoming environment. I would recommend this class to anyone, it is such a wonderful way to diversify yourself & to develop strong communication skills. To say this was an easy A would be missing the point.
If you're an accounting student at UIC you know about Popowits. EVERY course he teaches is great and is incredibly useful. The course isn't necessarily rigorous (like ACTG 315) as it is new material to most people that will be incredibly useful in a career in accounting. Popowits himself is a great instructor and person who cares about his students
One of the best classes at UIC! If you want to improve your communication, interview, impromptu and social skills its a MUST! It is the only class in which you will know everyone! Truly incredible experience. Professor is very respectful, and friendly. It has been 2 days since it ended, and I already miss the classmates and the professor.
Simply the greatest decision I made. 494 was wonderfully helpful in my growth as a business professional. Prof. Popowits is by far the best professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. Really goes the extra mile to make sure you feel comfortable with the concepts he's trying to teach, and pushes you to go further. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
Popowits is simply one of the best professors at UIC. He brings enthusiasm to the class and a sense of honesty. He knows you might feel stupid during some of the exercises, but he tries to make you feel comfortable about them. If you take your presence in life seriously, take this class!
I registered for this class the last minute and it was the best decision in my UIC career.Popowits is the best professor I ever had;he really cares about his students and wants us to succeed. The class is very helpful; I learned a lot more than from any other classes.Im actually sad the course is over.Simply the best class and best teacher!
I originally came into the 494 class just to get an A, but Popowits quickly made me realize that there is much more to life beyond the grade. If you're looking for a true UIC CBA experience, look no further! This class should be taken by all majors because we all have things we thought we were good at until we are confronted with it.
Words can't describe the impact this class & Prof. Popwits had on me. I highly reccomend this course to anyone, it was by far the most beneficial class I've taken my entire four years of college and without it i don't believe I would have come across the oppurtunities I have been given now. I owe my entire college tuition to this man & this course!
This is a long overdue review, but I took this class with Prof. P in the Fall of 2010. Every class this Prof. teaches is truly worthwhile, wish I had him for every single accounting class. He deserves far more than just the teacher of the year. This class will increase your knowledge of Access a great deal, don't miss out on taking it!
Whether you have bad communication skills or not, this class should be taken by all bus. majors.I took this course in Summer 2010 and still use the skills from this course in interviews, career fairs and even informal situations. The course is like a boot camp for communication skills in terms of removing students out of comfort zone.Great teacher.
Great class! Very informative and practical, applicable to daily life! Great professor, he really cares about his students.
This course should be required for all business gradudate students w/ Popowits teaching. Great insights to make the best of your strengths for networking, interviewing. Class was always fun, lots of participation involved. I learned so much in this class! I wish it was a full semester instead of 8 weeks.
Great course and an awesome Professor. It should be made a mandatory course not only for business graduates but also for other grads as well. Professor would help you to build your confidence and increase your networking skills which helps in real world situations like interviews, career fairs and in networking
MBA 590 should be a mandatory class! This skills polishing and motivational class will round out your MBA degree. The class should be called "Executive Presence."
His "Improvisation & Leadership" class is fantastic. Prof. Popowits is a fun and engaging instructor, and truly cares about developing students and helping them discover new skills and improve on existing ones. This class should be offered every semester, and made mandatory at least for MBA students, if not all graduate students!
Improv and Leadership was the most useful class I took in the MBA program. It teaches you how to perform when you are not in a comfortable situation, which is the most difficult thing to do in the working environment.
one of the best MBA classes! A class like this is what gives UIC MBA students a valuable advantage over other MBA students. I enjoyed going to this class and found it extremely useful. I no longer feel afraid of networking events! thank you Prof. Popowits!!
Took him for Improv and Leadership - outstanding class, was able to connect with all levels and experiences, interested in us and teaching us practical tools to succeed in the business world that are not usually taught in class. A true gem.
Fantastic class, Prof Popowits keeps the enrollment low so that everyone gets to know each other in a safe space. One of the best courses, Improv and Leadership sets UIC's MBA program apart. Please keep it up!
This class most definitely gives UIC MBA students a leg up on workplace competition! A very practical class with lessons immediately applicable outside the classroom. This class is one that will continue to be beneficial throughout my professional career.
Amazing!!!! Class is interesting very helpful with projects 2 exams the 1st one is hard and worth more than the final no the chapters in and out and you can get a A if not most likely a B
One of the most useful classes I have taken at UIC. I don't understand why it is not required. Puts you out of your comfort zone with mimicked professional environments. Class size is small which is perfect for allowing you to get to know the other students. Professor is awesome, epic, fabulous. Enough said.
This class was the most helpful class I have taken, and should be a requirement before graduating. Definitely allows you to be more comfortable and confident. MUST TAKE.
This class should be REQUIRED! It helps you so much, not only with networking and interviews but with other situations as well. The class size is perfect and you come out with so many new friends. Don't hesitate to take this class, even if you are the most shy person in the world.
As mentioned below, it should be our duty as accounting students to make this class permanently part of our curriculum. Where else do you expect to learn professional communication skills in such an interactive setting (without paying for professional coaching) The connections you make with each and every student in the class are guaranteed to last
Nice guy, pretty fun professor. Has one sucky project but its at the beginning and you get through it; work with friends. Personally I thought the class was a little boring. Requires some homework almost each week. For the tests just know whats in the book don't be too concerned with what he goes over in class on the powerpoints.
I enjoyed taking this class. I would recommend it to anyone. I learned a lot from him!
take it with Goodwin, much easier!!
Good professor. Wish I took more classes with him.
Good instructor, later in your first job or career you might appreciate his teachings. Recommend taking his 475 and summer professional presence class (Acgt420).
Peachtree project is super easy and cool because you can put peachtree on a resume. SUA is time consuming but not too bad. Last project is easy. Tests are hard, you have to read the book thoroughly, all multiple choice
ACTG 420 is a really helpful class. You will find it useful in your work as well as social network. The professor is really nice. Also, you will get high grade.
Prof Popowits teaches both ACTG 474 and ACTG 420. ACTG 420 is not difficult, but you will be expected to participate. ACTG 474 isn't difficult work as much as it is a lot of work. Overall, Popowits wants his students to succeed so he's enjoyable to study under.
Very helpful with the classes he teaches. Very nice guy. Recommend
Class is very interesting but tests are difficult in that they are LONG handwritten exams. Not essay but short answer/paragraph. Covers a lot of topics. Need to read the book to prepare for exams. Study the book more than the class notes. Brings in interesting speakers to present. Good class, although it does require work when it comes to tests.
Great class and professor! You need to always attend class adn not slack off with the hw in order to get an A. Definitely need the book for the hw and final project. This class is built on what you have already done, so always do the hw. Midterm is short answer & MC. He tells you exactly what will be on it. Final project is difficult.
Not my favorite class. SUA and peach tree were interesting. I don't understand his exams. They had nothing to do with any of the class, and a lot of the stuff was never covered in class You are basically on your own, I guess they are based on the chapters in the book. Whatever got an A. Many got screwed over by his test and his "scaling". Coffee to keep you up.
Prof. Popowits and this class have helped me grow as a person. This class gave me skills and confidence I need to succeed in the business world and my personal life.
Prof. Popowits created a learning environment that helped even the most timid students feel comfortable and gain confidence in a difficult subject. His insight and class structure allowed students to improve weaknesses and build strengths through weekly challenges and evaluations. This is a class that should be continued and expanded!
Professor Popowits course was so helpful for my future career and interaction in the business environment. He provides help to detect and improve your personal weaknesses. At the same time he creates a learning environment that enhances a warm and friendly interaction with him and the other classmates. The best class I've ever taken!
MBA590 at UIC is all about learning the skills to pay the bills. You will learn to sell the most important asset you have, yourself! Get youself into this class and learn the art of presentation, networking, through the Improv (Second City trained!)
This class really helps with developing your soft skills as a potential leader who wants to be influential in business. You realize how important soft skills are (above technical skills) in business, and this class definitely helps you understand and develop your weaknesses through weekly challenges and goals. Ya gotta take this class!!
Awesome professor! SUA is time consuming-don't procrastinate! Peachtree actg software is great to learn. Easy B Hard A. Midterm and final are based on the book so read the entire chapters carefully. Exams are hard; I studied the book chapters and his class PPTs and got an A Good class!I learned a lot and professor Popowits is a great lecturer!
Great professor and teaching style. Learned a lot of soft skills and ways of improvising situations. Very hands on, and a must-take class while at Liautaud.
Professor Popowits is a great instructor. This class takes people out of their comfort zone and he made it a safe environment. I would recommend this class to anyone starting the program or leaving the program. I learned great skills that I use everyday.
Great class. Great teacher. Take it.
This class is a must if you want to improve your presence in business environment. It is simple, fun and full of energy. The reading from the books were relevant and helpful all the way so I won't say that there was a workload if you can read some fun books. Highly recommended!
This should be a required class. If want to be great at interviews, public speaking or working a room at events; this is the class for you. You are gently pushed out of your comfortable zone to do things you thought you never could do. Interview questions are second nature now & I have tools for when I go to networking events. Take this class!!!!
Four years in business school is nothing compared to this course. Learn to interact with others in your daily life and take advantage of opportunities. I'd highly recommend this non-conventional course to anyone interested in developing themselves professionally!
Popowits is the best teacher. He takes you out of your comfort zone with various exercises, and at the end, you will be a better, more confident person. You learn how to think better on your feet and improvise, how to network, how to small talk, how to answer difficult interview questions, and much, much more. Take it! You will not regret it.
Professional Presence is an awesome class. Super low maintence weekly one page write-ups the midterm was to go to Second City and see improv you'll really get out of it what you're willing to put in. Take this class if you have the opportunity.
This is a must take course. It will help you tremendously in your personal and professional life. Everything you learn in this course will help you in the future. ACTG 420 deals with professional presence and this class will help improve your interviewing, networking, social skills, public skills, improvisation skills and so on. MUST TAKE COURSE!!!
Improv and Leadership -- I've never taken away so much from a class before. This is material that needs to be taught to EVERY undergraduate and graduate student. Case in point - his insight was critical in helping me successfully land a GA position. Truly an outstanding and compassionate teacher, with a meaningful and critical curriculum. BRAVO!
Awesome class! I have an introverted nature so taking this class was a hard choice for me. I hated it in the beginning because it made me step out of my comfort zone which meant it was doing what it was supposed to. I left this class feeling more confident to handle social situations so thank you Professor Popowits!
This is by far the best class I've taken at UIC. Michael has a lot of experience with improv, and transfers his knowledge effectively. After a long day of work and driving through Chicago traffic, I still looked forward to every one of his classes and always left in a better mood than I arrived. I wish I could take this class again.
This is a great class that challenges you by pushing you out of your comfort zone. Awesome help with presentation skills, interviewing, and networking (among much more). I recommend this Professional Presence class to everyone looking to grow personally and professionally. It is a must take!
This class is great. I don't think any socially awkward people will suffer from this class. For those who are scared - you will be prepared and it won't be scary actually. I am intimidated too. Its not hard, you'll love it. Work hard and you'll get more out of it. TAKE IT!!! you have to to survive the corporate world
This class is very helpful in realizing who you are and gaining confidence in handling social and professional situations as well as job interviews. Michael does a great job in all his exercises, take this!!
This is a class that every student should be required to take. You will learn important life lessons like how to interview and how to become comfortable with yourself in networking events. Do not miss a single class because you will miss out on crucial life lessons if you do. This is a class that cannot be taught via textbooks. I LOVED this class!!
Take this class, take this professor. So helpful in everything. Definite thumbs up!
Awesome Professor
One of the most useful classes for a Graduate student. Professor Popowits is superb and his way of teaching is absolutely brilliant.
Great course!
A great course to get a good idea about non-verbal communication and its effects. A course which puts you through a prism and helps you identify the various colors that emerge.
Great class for leadership and personal development, it should be made mandatory class.
ACTG 420 is a great course, especially if you take it during the time you are performing job search and interviews. It emphasizes the importance of being genuine and considerate in social situations. The impromptu speeches and the exercises allows students to gain confidence and preparation for future interviews. Take this classs!!
The best course I have ever taken. Helped me a lot in improving my communication skills. The professor really inspired me to get out of my shell.
An amazing improv course that everyone should take! This class isn't about getting the A , it's about putting yourself out of your comfort zone and learning about how others you interact with one another. Also, you'll get to know the people in your class well since the whole class is discussionsmoving aroundworking in pairs. Have fun!
Great Class!
This class really teaches you a skill set that will directly help you in your career. I loved it because it pushed me outside my comfort zone but he makes it a really safe, friendly setting and you feel like you are in a little community with your classmates. He is really dedicated, thorough, and it's a lot of fun!
This is a really helpful course that teaches you to control those voices inside your head that try to stop you every time you want to be proactive. The professor pushes you to do many activities through out the course. At the end, you will realise that you came a long way from where you started. It is a fun course too.
Improv and Leadership, or as Prof. Pop more aptly describe it - Executive Presence. Probably the most fun class I have ever taken that also worked on some of the most important skills many of us lack - people skills. You will learn how to present yourself and relate to others with confidence. Everyone should have the opportunity to take it.
Professor Popowits is amazing. I didn't want to take this class because I thought there would be long speeches and really uncomfortable situations. It was quite the opposite. My communication skills have sky rocketed. This class is a must take. I would take it over again if I could. Give it your all and you will see huge improvement.
Must Take class. I still find it useful
I took Professor Popowits class in my first semester. He was amazing. We learnt a lot about professional development, job interview process, maintaining eye contact etc. He is just brilliant, he makes you learn things easily, makes you laugh and inspires you too!
The class every student should enroll ! It's a stress buster.
The class is fun and unlike any other business class you will take. Michael (as he goes by his first name) gives the class a number of improvisational games to play and then assigns readings and exercises for you to "practice" improvising in the real world. You then write a short narrative on how it all went down.
This class was the most beneficial class that I've taken in getting my MBA. It helps with all the social aspects of business such as interviewing, small talking, and learning how to "brag" about yourself without seeming like a bragger. It was also a lot of fun and one I would definitely recommend!
Popowits is amazing. I would take another class with him as the professor in a heartbeat. He's great at lecturing and being interesting and he gives great feedback. As long as you show up and pay attention and participate he is the nicest guy ever. The class was pass fail but I gained so much from it.
I recommend this course to everyone who wants to get out of his/her comfort zone but doesnt know how. Professor Michael Popowits is the right person to help you achieve that, thanks to his inspirational and effective techniques as well as the course material. The sooner you take this course, the better it will be for your career path.
This is a must take class for business students. Professor Popowits has created a class that not only lets you have fun but actually have real benefits in the business world. The activities and assignments that were done for the class really help you get out of you comfort zone. Also no exams! Only thing I would wish it was 16 weeks instead of 8.
Can't say enough great things about Popowits and this MBA 590 (Improvisation and Leadership) class specifically. I'm an MBA student and this was the single most valuable class I have ever taken. Do yourself a favor and sign up for this class, no matter how uncomfortable you might feel about signing up for a class with "improv" in the title.
This class is great for students who identify as more technical. It is a communication, marketing (self), and strategy (life) course all rolled into one. It pushes you to learn about yourself and how you interact with the world. Popowits brings a wealth of knowledge as an executive coach in Silicon Valley, Accountant, and 2nd City instructor.
Worth the eight weeks and showing up. I learnt more in this class than all my classes put together in one semester. It is a must-take class, especially for people who do not have work experience to gain insights on how the business world works.
This class is essential for anyone looking to be successful in business or any other profession. The interviewing skills taught in this class are priceless. The many other skills in this class are highly relevant for your personal and professional life.
Very different class from all the rest- you're on your feet participating in improv exercises and group activities every session. I found the format refreshing.
Would definitely recommend to my friends
Professor Popowits is one of the most amazing lecturers at UIC. His techniques taught in the professional development class were extremely useful. He knows exactly what he is doing and is most willing to help you improve. Really do recommend his class. Respected by students everywhere.
Prof's improv class should be mandatory for both undergraduate and graduate students within any major field. I have well over 10 years of professional experience and find that this class is the most relevant of all the courses I have taken. Effective communication is critical for most everyone and his class provides the necessary training.
Must take course for any student
The Actual Homie. Like the cool teachers in the movies. Enough Said.
If you are thinking of taking MBA 590 Improvisation and Leadership, absolutely do it. It developed my people skills in ways that I did not even think would be possible, especially not going into an MBA program. Very helpful with job interviews, networking, pitches, any interpersonal situations.
Awesome class and great professor! Fun improv exercises and in class discussions. Emphasized interview questions a lot-to the point where I feel comfortable with them! Would definitely recommend this class to continue to develop anyone's professional presence. I took great takeaways from this class that I will incorporate in my full-time career.
Are you a little shy? Do you feel awkward talking to strangers at networking events? Do you want to develop your soft skills/ interviewing skills, and also want to have fun? If yes, then definitely take the MBA 590 Improvisation and Leadership. Awesome professor. A lot of takeaways, a good, fun learning experience.
Great professor
This class teaches students how to successfully promote themselves in professional settings, such as attending job fairs and networking events, interviewing, negotiating a salary or job offer, and asserting oneself in the workplace. I learned many new techniques that immediately made a positive impact in my professional life. Thank you, Professor!
Really an interesting class where you look forward to go. There's a lot of learning here which would definitely help you in your career interviews and networking. If you are a person with no professional work experience then definitely take this class.
The Improv and Leadership course, by the name, can be understood to help you develop better social and communication skills. The professor is very accessible. Takes each student's abilities into account and works with what is available. Do the class for fun. There's a lot of HW, but the material the course covers is really good.
This course is extremely enriching for anyone looking forward to walk out of their shy shell and develop their improv and communication skills. The course prepares you well for improving your networking abilities and interviewing skills. It is one of the finest courses at UIC and a must experience class. The professor is extremely helpful.
Excellent course. After only 8 weeks I feel more confident in my ability to interact with people and confidently handle a variety of professional and personal situations. This should really be a full semester course because the skills taught here are the ones that are often the most important in the workplace.
I'd like to say Thank you to Micheal. He is really nice and very responsible. He taught us a lot of interview and communication skills. He helped us to come out of comfort zone. Although the class is a little difficult for a Chinese student like me because of my language, Micheal did help me to be more confident to communicate with others.
The MBA 590 is an amazing course for students who wish to improve their people skills and at the same time have a stress buster. Prof. Popowits' approach, demeanor and experience in improvisation really helps to break the myths about public speaking in almost any scenario (interview, events, etc) and will make the student a better speaker.
I took MBA590 to address some weaknesses regarding my professional presence, as well as my social skills. The class was really helpful, it provided me theory, techniques and real life experiments to feel more comfortable under professional and social situations, as well as improved my interviewing skills. I recommend this class to all graduates.
This professor is great! I just take his MBA 590, which is excellent! This class teaches you strategies for interview, and you can use those strategies immediately. Though the textbook is not necessary, but I recommend you buy and read them. They are great!
His course is excellent and useful. I strongly recommend this course to anyone looking forward to improve their communication skills. Also, it's a great chance to practice your English if you're not a native speaker, since you will have to talk a lot in every classes. How to get an A in this class? My only advice for you is DON'T BE SHY!
He's a great professor, I've learned so much from him in a very short time.
The book he recommended is really worthy reading, it's called How To Work A Room. You will learn so much about how to build up conversation in a network event or somewhere else. This class also helps to practice and improve your interview question answers, we improve through games! It's really an amazing class. Don't miss it!
I took ACTG 475 with him. His midterm was quite hard. He gives out assignments that are longer that nobody finishes in one day. However, he is very generous so he gives specific directions when he gives out the assignments. Many people passes his classes. He is a good professor :) I recommend him. He definitely teaches well.
There is only one exam for the class, makes up about 35 percent of the total grade. The final is an access project, in which you build a database off access from scratch. (He gives out tons of instructions and tips on the final) There are approximately eight other access assignments, each worth 3 percent, where you will be doing forms, reports, and
Amazing class and professor. Professor loves to get you to walk around and practice interacting with others. Lots of ice breaking activities and impromptu speeches. Definitely not your usual type of class at UIC - no exams or quizzes, but everything is experiential (exercises in class). Would highly recommend this class!
Popowits is an amazing teacher who uses his extensive background to truly help students learn skills necessary to succeed in life and their future careers that are not taught in the typical classroom setting. His knowledge from several years as an accountant and 30 years at Second City helps students to create their own brand and sell themselves!
Professor Popowits did an amazing job preparing us professionally. The class is honestly "easy" in the sense of workload but it is difficult because it pushes you to develop your "soft skills" so you will be a better communicate and overall a better person. This is a class where the grade doesn't matter but instead what you learn from the course
If you get a chance to take the MBA 590 course, consider yourself very lucky! The best class I have ever taken, period.
Popowits is awesome. He made 495 very fun and interesting. His examples during class are what he puts on exams and homework. The class is a bit tough but he's always available and willing to help. Very good at explaining things if you're stuck on something. The material I learned I actually used in my internship, I would take him again if I could!
I Would definitely recommend this class for a number of reasons. First, you will learn valuable skills as well as make you a more confident professional. The reading material was also really valuable. The course will change from MBA 590 to BA 520 Spring 2017 but will be the same class. The course and Professor Popowits were truly outstanding!!!

I would recommend every student at UIC to take this class irrespective of their majors. Professor prepared us for not only job interviews but for various aspects of life. Even though the duration was only 8 weeks, I am very sure that at the end of the course every person came out more confident and ready to get out of their comfort zones.
Class has much more value when people who are shy step in to experiment in social practice. You learn to get along and find common ground with classmates. Class size felt just right. This course has potential for more topics to practice at: presentation, network contact, workforce entry. Hope the great things we experienced continue.
Im taking him right now, if you show up in class, you will do well in class as he explains ERD, Normalization, and Access throughly in class that will help you in your h.w and midterm. His homeworks are fair but theres hw every week. Theres only 1test(hw and PPT helped). Seriously dont zone out doing the hw! Hes funny and caring.
I recently took his MBA 590 II (Improv) course after taking Improv I the semester prior. Prof. Popowitz is one of the best professors I have ever had. He's thoughtful, creative, inspirationally introspective, & truly makes everyone feel valued every week in class. Taking a class from him is a must to developing prof. presence in ANY MBA program.
Improv & Business 1 focuses on networking and interviewing (Improv 2 focuses on presentation skills). I highly recommend this 8-week class- especially in your last semester as I was able to do 3 mock interviews in class with classmates and get feedback from them on my responses in real time! It's a lot of fun and really informative!
I was taking the Improvisation and Leadership 1. The class provided a lot of useful skills of communication, networking and interviews. Professor Popowits always prepared and organized the class well. He taught the students in a way which you would absolutely enjoy and be completely willing to participate in the class. He is one of the bests!
Highly Motivating and an inspiring Professor. He has helped me in all ways to achieve my goal in the subjects. Provides confidence in everyone and concentrates each student individually. Gives feedback personally and encourages us to speak and step out of our comfort zone.
Totally worth it! By making us perform different activities, he develops our personality professionally and personally. I loved his two approaches: "Improv! Improv! Improv!" and "Tapdance". He's the best! I would recommend every student in the UIC business school to take this course.
An incredibly meaningful and inspiring course where you learn to be comfortable in your own skin and in the moment while improving your connection with others through genuine interest and communication. This is a course that will not only benefit you in your career but also in all aspects of life and relationships with people. Highly recommend it!
If you take a class from Popowits, you are in the presence of greatness. It is like having Yoda for a teacher.
FANTASTIC! Incredibly useful, insightful, and internally challenging; really makes you think, assess, and evaluate where you are in your career, how you got there, and where you want to go.
If you want to grow personally and professionally take this class! I dont understand why anyone wouldnt. There is homework due every weekend. You will have to do some thinking but you will be thankful for it. Professor Michael really prepares you for the real world. I definitely recommend it!
TAKE THIS COURSE. If you worry you struggle with soft skills, shyness, networking, or interviews AT ALL, you need to get into this class. I recently had an interview with an organization I'd long been trying to work for, and it was because of this class that I was able to go into the interview confident and prepared... And land the position.
He's a funny guy, but the class is incredibly difficult. He gives little instruction on how to do the Microsoft Access assignments, and the average exam scores are low. Take a different class to save your GPA.
An honestly great professor. Professor Popowits really cares about his students and wants to help you get on a path to start your career
If you have questions regarding the materials, homeworks, and projects, do not hestitate to ask. He's really patient with students and give detailed and helpful feedbacks. This course is projects heavy. Be sure to start working on them early do not wait til due day's up. You will surely master access after taking this course tho.
Great class and the professor was very understanding and helpful. It does take time to prepare for the class; homework is long usually and time-consuming but are very beneficial
The grade is heavily based on exams. 20% is homework and the rest is split between two exams. Read the book carefully and pay attention to lectures and guest speakers as they will appear on the exam. Exams are very long and open answer; very challenging and tiring
He really cares about his students and wants to help them succeed. Weekly assignments are kind of tedious, but the work you do in that class will help you irl with job interviews, workplace professionalism, and how to network efficiently.
Honestly one of the best teachers I've gotten a chance to have here at UIC so far. Made a 3hr long class online worth every single minute of it. He is so funny and inspiring, the work you do in the class will leave an impact on you for the rest of your life. You also meet such great classmates from the class. TAKE HIS CLASS, you won't regret it.
Great professor who gives tons of advice for your future career. He truly helps you learn to speak better, as well prepare for interviews and conversations at future jobs. Easy class, and good professor.
This class is tough. Lots of work that takes a lot of time to get done. This professor genuinely seems to care for his students. He made the class worthwhile. You can choose whether to go to class in person, or watch prerecorded lectures. One exam. If you need help, he'll take the time to help you. Very considerate person.
