COOL, YOUNG, UNDERSTANDABLE
He is a awesome teacher ! attend the lectures! you will be fine!!!!!!!!!!
Class moved somewhat slow. He gives a study guide that might as well just be the test before each exam. Nice guy.
I don't really see what the big deal is. He's one of those teachers that believe if you know everything, then you'll do well. So he makes a study guide and asks you study a ton of stuff and half of it doesn't actually show up on the test. He was ok, but you'll get a better grade with Gabriel/Henning.
very entertaining lectures, cares about his subject and his students. Go to lectures and read the book and you'll do fine
Kool teacher
Very good lecturer, his class followed a logical order and he gave lots of relevant examples and demonstrations to back up his points in class. Exams were all multiple-choice and easy as can be. However, the 7 MANDATORY research sign-ups / summary papers are terrible (not his idea, all PSY101 classes have it as a req.)
He's a cool dude..but his class can be incredibly boring, and it doesn't help that it is offered at 9:30 AM. You can read the text book, basing the info on his provided empty power point slides, and fill in the blanks to study for your test...tests are tricky and I recommend studying.
Dr. P is an excellent professor. His lectures aren't too boring, he makes slide shows and puts it online for people who wants to type the notes. You come to class to fill out the notes.. it's that simple. 4 exams, no homework or quizzes. Study the notes = ace the exams. He's relateable with a sense of humor. I would suggest him to anyone.
He is a nice guy. You can get an A if you do mot miss classes. Especially, you can drop the lowest scores out of 4 exams and no final. It is a great oppurtunity to meet him to study psy 101.
Hes too hard compared to other easier psychology 101 courses. I underestimated this class.
I studied so hard for every exam and got real low grades. he gave me a D+ which is very upsetting. I do not recommend him.
I feel as though for PSY 101 he is one of the harder teachers. His tests are super confusing, you REALLY have to know the answer. This is annoying because the material is easy, the questions are just hard. While his lecture was interesting I recommend finding and easier 101 Prof.
easy to understand even I am an international. Extremely fun at class, and tests are not hard as long as you attend the class.
Had Poulin for 101 and for Stress & Coping. I LOVE this guy. He's REALLY friendly, straightforward, loves to find answers to student questions, makes class interesting. You get what you put into a class. Pay attention, don't rely just on the ppt outlines - it's worth it. He's a great teacher. Take anything you can with him if psych interests you.
Probably one of the only classes I go to and actually listen and take notes. He's mad fun, and a pretty chill dude. Tests are confusing but as long as you go to class and listen you should be fine. Tell your friends, good class to take.
Very helpful and nice guy. Exams are based on lectures not the book. Attendance is not mandatory but you should go if you want to do well on the exam.
Dr. P is a great guy - he's funny, engaging, and extremely interesting to listen to. Compared with the psych professors my friends had, he's probably the coolest and easiest professor. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK - as long as you show up to class and take notes. As far as studying goes, all I did was review the notes the night before. Highly recommend.
He is the coolest professor ever! He plays music every time before the class started, and deliver his lecture with great enthusiasm. His class is not mandatory, but do attend if you want to perform well. He gives excellent explanation and examples which is easy to understand. Plus, he likes to make small experiment in class. It's fun!
amazing guy and interesting
Literally the worst class I have ever taken he is a terrible professor and I would never recommend him.
Great guy. NOt a hard class at all. Show up and study for a few hours before tests and you will do fine. He gave us everything we needed to know for all exams. No tricky questions. All multiple choice. Sign up for the required experiments early. Would def recommend.
He is an extremely easy and fair professor. Everything that is on the exams was made explicit in lecture, and he is not out to fool you. Do not buy the textbook, it is unnecessary.
If required to take this course then Poulin certainly belongs near the top of your list for professors to take. If not required to take this then my suggestion would be to look elsewhere as receiving an A requires a decent amount of effort. All in all an outstanding guy with interesting lectures. Good luck getting him!
I think that Michael Poulin is a good professor, but his lectures are boring. The class isn't as interesting as you might think it woud be.
Lectures are voice recorded and put online along with powerpoints. Tests are only based on what is gone over in class. No cumulative final. 4 multiple choice tests, lowest one is dropped. Given study guides that you can fill out. Took the first 3 tests, had a 95%, so I didn't even need to go to class after that or take the last test.
Four exams, lowest gets dropped, no cumulative in any of them. Recorded lectures, tests are all based on the slides presented in class. Do his test review questions and you should be fine on the test. Finish your required 9 psy experiments asap, and you can do 3 more for extra points. Each 1 counts as 1% on your grade, yes 1%. Easy A.
I took other prof's class for the first time, tough grader. I only got D. I repeat this class and I meet Dr. Poulin. His class is interesting and easy. Tests are super easy once you study the study guide before each exams. No textbook. There are recording online so I never go to class except exam days. I get 92.2 which is A- not A. Sad:(
The class (stress & coping) was a little difficult but he made it really interesting. Three exams, noncumulative. Each Thursday there are group discussions; you have to read an article and answer questions and discuss them with your group of 4 people. It's not as bad as it seems, these discussions make the exams worth less so it's almost an easy A.
AMAZING professor. Would definitely take another class with him if i could. Very helpful. Will answer any questions you have clearly . The 2 exams are a little tough and require you to do more than just go over your notes.
Dr. P is one of the best professors that I have had. He doesn't allow electronics or computers to be used in class, but I don't even feel compelled to use them because of his interesting lectures. Take good notes, complete your research assignments, do the study guide and study for the test and it'll be an easy A for you. Love this teacher.
Awesome professor! Take PSY 101 with him! I had a very rudimentary background in psychology, but his lectures draw information from biology, sociology, and a few other disciplines, which make the class unusually interesting. Did not touch my notes till the night before each exam. 4 exams, lowest gets dropped. Currently have a 94.4, easiest A!
Professor Poulin was a great professor. The class is graded on 4 exams with one exam dropped. As long as you do well on the 3 exams you'll get an A. Lectures are recorded.
Try taking him. His lectures are interesting, and he's passionate on teaching. Humorous guy, too! And he always posts exam guides one week before the exam. Attend his class and A is easy!
Good guy, fun course, but if you're a bad test taker, this isn't for you. The only grades are three tests with thirty questions.
The best professor I've had at UB yet. He really cares about his students and is a great lecturer. The class is relatively easy to begin with, but you need to either attend the lectures or watch them online, consistently.
4 test, lowest dropped. Don't take this class if you're not a good test takers. I rewatched each lecture again after going to class, still got a B-. Studied my butt off, it wasn't hard questions it was just wordy. Your knowledge is based off of 4 test w 30 questions each.
Topics- stress & coping. One book to read but I got by without reading it. Questions to answer + Group discussions every week which you can't miss. 2 exams not cumulative.
Dr. Poulin is one of my favorite if not my favorite professor i have had! Be prepared for a lot of group discussion, at least once a week. A lot of journal reading and discussion question responses but they are easy. Go to class for lecture and take notes because he says a lot that isnt on the slides. If you put in a little bit of effort, easy A.
Awesome professor. The class is only lectures, and you have to pay attention to them to pass, but theyre also all recorded.
Dr. Poulin is a great professor honestly and he makes the classes very interesting! I really admire him and I would always go to his office hours for help. With that being said, if you are not a good test taker, PLEASE do not take this class. You are mainly graded on exams and I wish I knew beforehand so I can switch. Other than that, he's great!
Best professor teaching PSY101. Dr. Poulin makes the class interesting & EZ to understand by applying real world examples that you can relate to. Although your final grade is based on just 4 exams, all questions are perfectly straightforward, mc, and DIRECTLY from his study guides. No b.s. trick questions either which I really respect about him.
Best professor I've ever had, and he always manages to keep his lectures interesting.
great professor would take his classes again
Super easy class, he posts a study guide for every exam, and it has all the information you'll need for the exam. All his lectures are posted online. My strategy was to not go to class, wait for the study guide, and then go through the lectures at 2x speed and make flash cards with what would be on the exam. Really great professor.
worst professor, how can a class just be centered on 4 exxams
Great professor, but people are correct when they say that if you arent a strong test taker then not to take his class. His grades are based on 4 exams with no curve. You have the opportunity to get 3 bonus points with your research requirement, but thats about it. Other then that he is very entertaining and I would take another class with him.
This class is an easy A if you put in the work. Before each exam, he posts a study guide which is essentially everything on the exam. Just cram and watch the lectures online while filling the study guide out and you will pass. Only graded by four exams so don't slack on the exams.
He is awesome and has a great sense of humour. You will enjoy his classes even if you don't do well; he's that entertaining. But to do well try filling out the study guide atleast five days before the exams and go through it; it's easy to do to POORLY if you don't. An A shouldn't be too hard if you put in the work. ALSO, THE CLASS IS NOT CURVED.
Easily the best professor I've had so far at UB. Lectures are interesting, he's clear on what he wants you to learn and know for exams, and his exams are very straightforward. Has passion for what he teaches and wants to see you succeed.
My favorite thing about Professor Poulin is his dedication to his students and to his craft. He is definitely one of the kindest professors at UB and deserves nothing less than a 5/5. When you review for his test, WATCH HIS LECTURES. He covers literally everything you need to know.
Dr. Poulin is a great professor and you can tell he's a genuinely great person who cares about his students. His exams are based on the lectures, so just make sure you watch them before the exams. He makes his lectures funny and interesting! Would definitely recommend him, he is awesome!
He's a really funny guy. His lectures are super interesting and he's very knowledgeable of his class. His class is ONLY graded by 4 exams, no hws, no clickers, no participation. His exams are very easy; all multiple choice and gives you a study guide w everything that goes for the exam. Rewatch lectures before the exam and you should be good!
Class isn't hard, tests are fair and easy. With that being said, he structures his entire class on research; even down to a "device free" classroom based on "his research". In my eyes, he's incredibly arrogant and quite condescending. Lectures drag, but he posts them online so you never have to go (watch them in double speed).
Great teacher with very interesting lectures. I highly recommend his class. He teaches the psychology of memorization and how it applies to studying, which can help you do well on the exams in his class
Hes a good professor and makes lectures more interesting then most, considering the size of the class. Its an intro level class so coursework for most is things you have heard about before.
Dr. Poulin is an incredibly enthusiastic professor who truly cares about his students. He uses feedback from his students via Piazza to make the course more fair and enjoyable. Your grade is composed of 4 exams, which are relatively easy (multiple choice) as long as you pay attention to lectures and take diligent notes.
Because of Covid-19 and the transition to distance learning made everything very stressful. Dr. Poulin accommodated our requests as best as he could So our grades didnt suffer because of circumstances out of our control. He wants you to succeed; you have the option to get up to 3 points added to your average with extra credit. Best professor at UB
You're only graded by four exams, but they aren't that difficult if you focus on the lectures and go over the study guides given before each exam. After transitioning to online classes he was really helpful, and made lectures interesting to watch, and he even dropped the lowest exam to make the transition easier. Highly recommended.
Dr. Pouln absolutely crushed this distance learning thing and he was a great professor before it happened. I've seen the other professor's class... trust me twice as hard twice as much work twice as much material. He's a great guy in general wish he was a business professor bc all of SUNY Buff professors could really learn a thing or two from him
To be honest I thought this class was close to an easy A. All the exams are VERY note based and the textbook is recommended so I didnt even buy it! The only annoying part of the class is the psych experiments that are mandatory but if you do 11 instead of the 9 required you can get up to 3 extra points on your average. Really funny guy who cares!!
Dr. Poulin was an extremely caring professor. He always had funny and interesting videos/examples to demonstrate the concepts in a way to remember. He made sure that everything went smoothly with the online learning due to the virus. He cares about each of his students and is very easy to get in touch with and will have an answer for you quickly.
Dr Poulin is the best professor Ive had at UB. Ive seen many, and believe me, he is the best. His class is easy if you study. Its graded by 4 tests, exam heavy, but it is very easy if you study. His lectures are very interesting and he truly cares for his students. Thank you Dr Poulin, Have a Good summer.
I enjoyed his Stress and Coping class a lot!
Graded mostly off of 4 tests, but they were reasonable. Very engaging, funny, and caring.
Engaging and funny. All lectures are recorded and you only have to worry about 4 exams.
He was a great teacher and tought very good, work hard in his class and focus.
Lectures are interesting. Graded by 4 fully open note tests. Great teacher.
Easiest A ive ever gotten
Professor Poulin is a great professor, the only issues is his lectures. It rarely had any text or definitions on them, he relied more on pictures then written definitions to explain his concepts. If your a visual learner like me you might struggle alot in his course. And your whole grade is dependent on four tests.
Poulin is a fantastic professor! engaging lectures and very fair exams! love the kermit impressions as well!
Dr. Poulin seems like an awesome and caring guy, his lectures were fun and interesting, and the study guides he made for the exams let you know exactly what's on them. Solid Kermit impression as well.
Dr. Poulin was an amazing professor. I took this course as a prereq to business and he made the content very interesting using real-world examples. No homework at all, only 4 tests and 9 hours of research participation are required to get a grade for the class. Study guides are given for each test and all lectures are available online!
Professor Poulin is a solid professor, the guy is really nice and has interesting lectures. The only knock on this class is that your grade is pretty much just the 4 exams you take. It sucks if you did poorly on just one there really isn't any way you can help your grade. If you're a good test taker, I recommend this course.
Decent class but test heavy, 4 exams that are 25% each. Only other grade is easy extra credit that will bring your average up 3%
Great professor. Easiest class you will ever take as a freshman. Lectures are interesting nd interactive but not required to attend but you should bc it will be on exams. There is no homework at all. You have to do a research credit though, just do 12 credits of the research surveys .
Good guy and a good class to take! Grade is based on 4 exams which were open note, and there is no homework or other grades.
He only grades based on 4 exams. He doesn't curve even thou 3 of 4 of those exams' class average is C and lower. His lectures are great, but the exams are very hard. For the remote exams, you cannot go back to the previous questions! No lecture recordings this semester. Only 3% dept. mandatory extra credit (earned by research) is the only plus!
Prof. Poulin's lectures make you have to create the "notes" yourself since his slides have bare minimum- but I found that I was able to retain my material WAY better that way. A lot of comments are about there only being 4 quizzes -- he gives a WHOLE study guide and the quizzes are easy as long as you do the guide. Online is open note. Very easy!
He's overall a good person and makes the lecture enjoyable, but the grading based on only 4 exams makes it tough to ace an A.
While his class was difficult, he was a great professor who made the material accessible. He provided clear feedback and room for improvement on low grades. He was kind, compassionate, and hilarious! Definitely recommend him as a professor, he provides room for learning and growth both inside and outside the classroom!
Professor Poulin is a good professor who knows what he is talking about. The lectures are interesting and they require you to take good notes. No homework or quizzes, just 4 non-cumulative exams that make up your grade. Have to put an effort into doing well on exams in order to get good grade in the class. Also have to do research requirements.
I will miss Professor Poulin's class. He was a great professor, made the lectures interesting and very educational as he is an expert at what he teaches. While the grading policy is tough (Graded 100% on exams 1-4) he drops the lowest test, and if you attend lectures and take good notes you'll be fine. Take the class, you shouldn't get under a B.
Excellent professor, grateful to have had Dr. Poulin as my introduction to psychology. Lecture heavy, so if you want to succeed in his courses, you should attend every lecture and take good notes. That is the hardest part, though. Dr. Poulin rewards consistent effort and conscientiousness.
Great professor overall. Attendance isn't mandatory but you need to be able to take great notes and really pay attention in order to succeed in the class. The questions are scenario-based and require you to really understand the concepts. As long as you go to lectures and really pay attention you'll pass the class easily.
Dr. Poulin was such a great professor. His lectures were so interesting and he always made an effort to make the concepts you learn in the class very understandable and relatable. He was overall a great guy. Take a class with him!!!
You have to attend lectures to get the necessary notes for the exams, which are open note. However, his lectures are very engaging and it is easy to follow along with.. As long as you understand the lectures, you'll get an A. There is also 3 points extra credit that you can earn during the semester by participating in research.
Psych 101 is not an easy class. Graded entirely by 4 exams, each of which are analysis-based and require critical thinking with concepts learned in class.
Basically whole class is based off of 4 exams and he does not do curves or extra credit. The problem I have is that there is absolutely 0 help if you are not a fast typer or cannot understand something the second it is said. It is hard to keep up and do notes while paying attention. I would recommend not taking him. No clue how he has a 5 on here
awful don't take
don't waste your time u most likely won't pass he changed how he does tests not online
They are not open note anymore nor are they online DO NOT TAKE
Do not take him he's good at lectures but his test are very hard and you get no practice doing any sort of questions he may give and questions are very wordy
Guys DO NOT listen to these other reviews. He changed the way he graded and they're all wordy. There is not ‘note sheet' or ‘exam dropped' like these other reviews are saying. You need to memorize everything yourself and only get 3 extra credit points doing research. You definitely need to treat this like a STEM class as no studying = bad scores.
Do not take this class ever. It will destroy or CGPA. It looks like an easy class but it's not. It all depends on your 4 exams. No homework, attendance or quiz to increase your grade. Overall terrible
Awful, he only gave exams that was opinion based and the right answer was what he thought. He only gave exams and no homework or quizzes, NOTHING.
He's a good professor but the bad thing is his class in only graded by 4 exams if you aren't good at exams I would suggest not taking it with him and taking it with a professor that has more just four exams that determine your whole grade, otherwise he's a great professor.
Professor Poulin is my goat, he gives amazing lectures that are easily understandable and if you attend the lectures you won't have a hard time maintaining the material. The only downside is that the only grades you recieve for the class are 4 exams so if you aren't a good exam taker, I don't know if this is the class for you. otherwise hes amazing
After reading these 1-star reviews, I had to rate him. He is a great professor with engaging lectures. Often through classes I am bored but in this class I actually care to learn. If you attend the lectures and take notes, this class is very easy to pass. I am an awful test taker and managed to get less than 4 questions wrong on all exams.
Don't listen to the low rating reviews. The people who state that the exams are hard and unfair likely don't pay attention or try to study. You are graded on 4 exams, for which he gives a study guide. If you study based on the study guide, you will pass the exams. Understanding the material guarantees success.
He is incredibly clear with his expectations. He posts a study guide for every exam so you know exactly what you need in your brain beforehand (no cheat sheet!). Many students dislike the fact that 4 exams are your entire grade, but they are super straightforward as long as you look at the study guide (he does reviews before every exam!)
Professor Poulin was a good professor, the material was slightly boring and I wish it was more interactive but overall the course was fun.the wording on his exams are a bit weird, also the exams are in person but you take it on your device and there are proctors there. His lectures don't really contain that much material, so go to class. 7/10 class
Professor Poulin is a great professor! He knows exactly what he is doing and makes material easy to understand. My only minor problem is that the exams are sometimes weirdly written and are almost always scenario-based questions so it can get confusing sometimes. But if you study enough for them you will be fine.
This class really just comes down to how good of a test taker you are, I went to almost every lecture (I was sick for 2 weeks) and even then I barely scraped by with a B- because the course is dependent on 4 exams and 3 extra credit points. The lessons were pretty interesting but if your not a good test take do not take this class cuz you WILL fail
My grade is only a reflection on how I did on exams. They got progressively easier when I would put the study guide into an AI exam generator and then I got a lot better at taking the exams. Only graded on 4 exams, but I went to lecture everyday to take notes (they're not recorded). Prof is absolutely hilarious and loved that he dimmed the lights.
Tests just had wack questions, chill guy though.
