Great teacher! He's very friendly and enthusiastic about his subject. "Bucket bucket what's in the bucket," "peanut gallery" and the jeopardy tune are some of the funny things you'll always remember from his class. Highly recommended!
Been a few years since I took him but he was a great instructor. Makes you want to learn, enthusiastic about the material (even though it can be pretty dry). Study your stuff though, he has zero tolerance for non serious students though.
took the guy last year...not a course to take just for fun but if you're serious then he is one of the best you'll have! the guy knows his stuff and is alway willing to help too. we need more teachers like him! he deserves a raise
Mr. Reese is the man. Seriously, I know a lot of people that have said that they weren't that interested in Chemistry at all until they took this class. Be warned though, it is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared for the work and it'll go by that much better.
An excellent teacher aswell as enterataining. But take this class very seriously. It isnt easy, do your homework which he emphasis alot. Recommend class to take only if you need it and you put forth the effort.
This Professor was rude and inappropriate during his correspondence with me. I asked him a polite question and he gave me inappropriate response. I've decided not to take his class because of his actions.
Twice in my conversations with him he pointed out that his name is on the CD case. So THAT'S why the bookstore doesn't sell used texts for this class. $125 for the text and a 6 month "lease" to use the CDs is not cheap. This guy is too full of himself and arrogant and rude for me.
This class demands a lot from you. The reading, watching the CD-ROMS, the homework, and the experiments. This class will be hard for you if you take more than 12 credits and have a job or are part of a club. You're better off taking another class. Exams are only availible for 24 hours and you're only warned a couple days prior.

THe best teacher i've ever had. He's the reason i'm now majoring in chemistry
THE gretaest smart ass on earth. super cool prof with overloaded subject knowlege to which he can grill you with. the best sicence teacher ever had; shares a general concern for the education of his students

very entertaining. it is hard work though. you definitely will learn a lot.
Too much ego for me. Excellent lectures but doesn't are if you understand or not that's your problem!

Great Professor :)
Very brilliant and demanding professor. Expects you to put in as much work as he does to be successful. Lots of material but is always available for help. Teaches from a good textbook. Exam style forces mastery of material to earn an A. Very helpful, very respectful, and easy to count on for a good laugh.
Very helpful teacher. Lots of homework and reading, but worth it. Some of the materials covered are a little bit hard to grasp on. Labs are pretty easy, if you read it before hand. He knows his subject very well. I admire his passion for chemistry.
IMHO he is the coolest prof in chems, very knowledgeable and very dedicated he has got to have been one of the top teachers ihave ever had
great teacher! teaches just like a real college-level course. really understands the material. his lab reports aren't that bad. exams are very hard. always at his office to help students
the class isn't easy, but that should be expected. he makes up for it with his witty humor.
You have to put some effort to get a good grade in this class, but at least you learn. His exams are pretty generous. Teacher is very fair and understanding. Follow his advice and what he says. Ask him about kulolides.
One of my very favorite teachers so far. He's extremely entertaining loves his subject. If you want a good grade in this class you'd better read all the chapters do all the homework and study. And after you've done that, read all the chapters, do all the homework and study some more.
Passion for Chemistry! One of the toughest professors on campus, not reccomended for the LCC baby! Exams/Pop Quizzes extremely difficult, so STUDY STUDY STUDY! I recommend you take the class with a bunch of friends, so you can help eachother out and STUDY together! ZERO tolerance to slackers/babies!
This teacher loves what he does and makes sure you get interested in learning about chemistry! Just do the questions assigned in the book, quizzes and show up for class because you do the first few labs in class then you do 8 labs at home. Don't get on his badside, you don't want him to be picking on you in class...lol
Reese is easily the greatest teacher at LCC
Not very helpful.
He wants you to read the book a million times. Lectures briefly go over SOME of the reading material. Tests were really hard unless you actually read the book. Overall, i think he passes almost everyone just so he doesnt have to deal with them again. Hes a cool person but his class was pretty hard for me. -Enough to turn me off towards chemistry.
Very knowledgable, decent lecture, but don't take if GPA is important. Only way to pass is do problems in text and understand them. But even if you're excellent at problems in book, he purposely puts ridiculous, irrelevant questions on test to throw you off. Often unprofessional. Looks down upon students. Sometimes think he wants student to fail.
HARD CLASS! Sometimes he can be a riot and other times on another planet. You learn a lot!
NO NO NO NO!!! Don't take Reese, take Voyce at KCC, he is the hidden gem. It may be a bit more of a drive for us Leeward peoples, but it's worth it, because you won't have to dedicate your life to a subject you just wanna get by in. Reese, you gotta remember, this is not our only class, if we do what you say, we will fail our other classes!
Mr. Reese deserves the best professor in LCC. He's very knowledgeable and humorous. A lot of work to do in his class but its worthwhile. If you can do well in his class, im sure you will never be afraid of any science class in the future. Just follow what he says you will be better off.
This professor knows his material. A must to read the textbook and do the questions. Can be helpful but he makes you think. I really enjoyed his class but it kicked my butt!!
Wasn't impressed with teacher at all. He knows his stuff, but he is ALL over the place!!! Literally. Maybe it is his style of teaching, but I didn't find him amusing at all. I've had my fair share of crazy, wacky ones but he takes the cake. Would not recommend for aspiring Science majors. Take it somewhere else. It's General Chemistry!!!
Reese is a great professor who has a passion to teach and get you to learn. Those who think he's not, oh boy, you should take some of the chem profs at Manoa -- HORRIBLE. Most lcc peeps just not used to his higher academic standards style; you actually need to do homework and understand it. If you don't then you need to ASK for help or you fail.
great teacher. He's the reason i went into chemistry
Horrible Professor & person, he is the very reason why I'm not getting into Chem. Hawaii is a state of Aloha, go back to the East Coast Professor Reese!
I took 161 and 162 from him. My suggestion is if you really wanna learn chemistry, CHOOSE HIM! He's the BEST, and he also teaches the great skill of learning.however, his exams are hard and you may hard to get an A but not hard to pass the class with a C.
Worse teacher on the face of this planet! He's a very arrogant man that knows it all. This course consumed most of my time. Took time away from other courses. Its an extremely hard course that requires you to read the book and complete all chapter problems. Reese is not helpful! Very unapproachable and rude! Take it from Voyce at KCC.
Leeward peoples, if you have to take chem161 and have a WEAK science/math background, take it at KCC, its worth the long ride. This professor harasses students, rude, arrogant, cocky, etc. EXTREMELY difficult class!
This guy needs to be kept on a short leash. He lacks common sense on occasion.
he knows his stuff very well.i learned alot in this class. On the other hand if u want to spend hours and hours doing his work and studing for his exam and end up with a D, you are in the right class. His exams are really short but he bring questions from sections that we didnt even cover yet. My advice is to stay away from him.
Don't be stupid...do not take his class. No other options? Your screwed.
His class is a little bit hard but he was one of the best professors I had in my life. Now I work as an Engineer but I could not be here without his class.
His class is not hard, although his tests are challenging. You are expected to be able to put what he teaches into practice. If you do the assignments and labs with a little bit of attentiveness, it really helps your grade. You do have to read the book and do the homework. I think many students find him abrasive and intimidating, truly he is not.
His lectures are like cafine in the morning. Idk how he does it! He uses a lot of visioual aids! He also treats u like a real colleg student! So get your act together.
Extremely hard to get an "A" in his class due to his unrealistic standards. When hes bored he likes to play mind games on students. Students that have poor study habits love this guy while "good students" are just irritated with him repeating the common sense. Take this class elsewhere.
Sarcastic and egotistical but you learn a lot. What you learn in his class will really help you in the long run. Looking for an easy A? Take chem from another teacher. You actually have to do the work in the text to comprehend what's going on in class. Attend class, take notes, and ask for help.
this is the best teacher i ever had. i've never come across anyone so passionate about what they do. this man will prepare you for the real world. his curriculum is challenging, but if you take good notes and READ the book, you'll do fine. just a word of advice for prospective students, there is ALWAYS water in the bucket. haha.
The first real professor i have had in college. This is a tough class that requires a lot of study time. In fact, the professor expected that in us. Reese is tough as nails in grading, hilarious in classroom discussion, and available and helpful to a tee. If he sees you work hard, he might bump up your grade a bit.
Reese does his job very well. Yeah... he's the best at what he does. This guy TEACHES chemistry. Doing the work in the book is a must, and the more you do the higher your grade will be. Hilarious! When your lost, just read the book... he's not making this stuff up.
do it yourself kind of teacher
If u like learning take Reese. I'll never forget sig figs again.
He's a wonderful teacher. I remember everything he taught me. He has a knack for relating chemistry to the world. If learning is your priority, Reese is the man. Too bad he doesn't teach Ochem.
teacher is raeally raeally hard. teacher plays favorites. he gave me and many of my hardworking girlfriends a i/d but gave the least hardworking student in the class a b. he is funny though
I took his class way long time ago. It was around 1994, and he was just starting out as a professor at Leeward. The book used was good, but his tests were a bit tricky, and that made it hard. Also, you will learn general chemistry like never before. I took 162 at UHM, and it was SO easy in comparison. I got 100% on every exam in 162.
I highly recommend taking this class elsewhere. This guy wants his students to struggle. Lectures were very different from the textbook readings. No graduate school will care if you took Reese. The Chemistry department seems like they don't care about what happens to you after their classes. Hands down, this department sucks.
professor is super cool. he makes it a point to get to know his students both on campus and off campus. he is really caring to his students. even though i got a bad grade in his class he felt bad and after the semester was over changed my bad grade to a good one. dont let the other reviews fool you as he has a soft spot for his students
There's a lot of homework to do. In order to pass his tests and exams you gotta do the book work and disc assignments. Reese is an excellent teacher. Always willing to help. He encourages team work and students helping students, but if you're all stuck he'll give answers. No need go to class, but you really should.
This is the best teacher you will ever have at LCC. If you're planning on taking chemistry, take this professor. He's tough, but you will learn the material without a doubt. Lots of homework, and hard exams, but his curve is far more than reasonable. If you attend class regularly, exams won't be a problem for you.
The BEST Chemistry professor you can have in the UH system. His lectures are clear and he is always asks the class if they understand the material or not. Easy to talk to and tries to help you learn on your own. Exams are hard and there is a lot of HW but you will do great if you jus do it and read the book. He tried to pop a waterballoon on me.
During this course, Assistant Professor Reese built a chemistry foundation with very little to start with. Though he oversimplified things a lot, his method of instruction during his lecture hour and his discussion during his extensive office hours worked to yield a good understanding of the different types of matter and their molecular trends.
Building upon the foundation he created in CHEM 161B, Assistant Professor Reese worked extensively to foster a vivid basic understanding of intermolecular forces and their influence on the different states of matter; reaction mechanisms and their influence on kinetics; basic reaction thermodynamics; and electrochemistry involving Lewis acids/bases.
He's a good teacher, and he covers the topic well, gives lots of good anecdotes, etc. My only problem with the guy is he didn't grade our labs until after the semester ended, and gave me an incomplete (without telling me) because he didn't like the way I did a lab, and made me come in a week after the semester was over to fix them.
Reese is a Great teacher. He puts all his time into his chemistry class and gives good examples. it's not a easy class, but you do learn a lot. for the people who don't really study for their classes you shouldn't take this class. it's a lot of hw and studying, but your willing to put time and effort you'll get a good grade.
Anyone who complains that this class is hard should realize that they're severely mistaken. This class is very easy and Reese makes it easier. Most of the complainers in my class did not seem like they had a good high school education. Reese only covers like 60% of the book. Wanna learn real Chemistry? Don't take this class anywhere in Hawaii.
I'm cracking up at all the people who think Reese wanted students to fail. I took 161 & 162 from him and figured out that if you work hard, he respects you. If you slack off and don't do the work, yea, he comes across as arrogant. But he was always, -always-, willing to help me with any problems I had!
Fun Professor, but his class requires that you study and read the material. He wants labs done a certain way, so in order for you to get a high grade on them, you would have to ask him for help and probably stick around in the Chem Lab area. Always willing to help, but class takes up alot of your time. Grading curve is really big on exams.
I took Reese's class back in 1994, I think, when he was a new professor at Leeward. He is a hard professor, and I learned a lot. Prior to exam three, I was getting a B average in the course. I stood up 3 nights in a row studying for exam 3 because I was really behind. I aced it and aced the final. Got the highest score in the class.
Reese is a great professor. If you think 161 is hard, wait until you get to 162B. 162B is way harder. The first Exam we had was extremely hard and very tedious. The hour and 15 min time given to take the exam is just not enough to finish up. majority of the class didnt finish the exam. other than hard exams, he's great and fun
I took Reese's class for Chem 161 and currently 162. This class is no joke. It's definitely not easy. He'll definitely help students who want the help. Teaches you not only Chem, but how to develop good study habits and prepares you for University level classes. Overall great teacher! You just need to put in the work. Oh our 2nd exam was harder!
This guy is awesome in helpfulness and clarity, but he is tough and plays hard. He pushes students to the limit and unleash their full potential of what students need to do to pass his course. Wow, Chemistry to the max with this guy.
best class for chem, but you need to do the work.
VERY FUN AND GREAT INSTRUCTOR, HELPFUL AND VERY KNOWLEDGABLE OF TOPICS. ALWAYS WILLING TO ANSWER QUESTION BUT EMPHASIZE STRONGLY ON STUDYING AND DOING HW WHICH WILL STRONGLY HELP YOU. RECOMMEND YOU KEEP UP WITH THE WORK OR YOU WILL FALL BEHIND.
Difficult class and unclear teaching. Expect to learn by yourself or by fellow classmates.Always made it a point to let everyone know how smart he was, I wish he knew he is teaching at a COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Barely passed.
He's great, starts the class with a blank chalkboard and covers it with visual aids throughout the class, in easy to follow steps. Quirky and fun, a little mischievous, but a great teacher if you want to learn the material and receive help outside of class.
Not an easy topic, but the enthusiastic and helpful prof. knows how to make it fun, and interesting. Definitely take his class if you have the chance, just do the HW and go to the lectures you wont regret it.
Despite what others say, Professor Reese is probably the best instructor i have ever had. His class is hard, but you are guaranteed to learn the most. I would recommend to only those who want to do their best.
Not an easy class. Recommend you do ALL assigned work/readings: everything aligns towards your success. Fantastic lectures; fun labs. Inspirational commitment to students & the community. Extremely knowledgeable, caring, & hard-working. Good Prof. & person, with an infectious smile & great sense of humor. An invaluable experience.
Pretty good experience overall. Took this class a year back.
The best professor I have EVER HAD! He really knows what he is talking about. He initially seemed condescending, but I was wrong. He really cares about each student! He just doesn't want everyone to know it. I learned so much from him! The work is hard, but if you study all the time, try your best and utilize the chem tuitors, you will succeed.
No joke. Chem161 is hard no matter who you take it from at LCC.However,Reese is one of those professors that everyone should take as part of their college experience.Real down to earth +cares about his students. He will challenge you to the max.I promise if you take Reese, you'll be prepared for any course/challenge anywhere.I highly recommend Reese.
He is an amazing professor. He makes chemistry so interesting. However, you'd have to work really hard since his quizzes and exams are either tricky or hard.
Will take it from a different prof. next time.
I have seen well over 50 professors during all my years in college. Professor Reese is easily among the top 3 best teachers I have ever had. I wish that there were more teachers like him in the world.
Extremely knowledgable! Excellent teacher. Tests are pretty hard but if you have a strong grasp on the material, the tests are possible. I highly recommend going to the tutor and spending time in their center for students.
Professor Reese is one of the best Professors I've ever had and got me interested in a subject I didn't think much of before class. Tests and quizzes are challenging in a good way. Make use of the free tutoring and study room. It's a good place to hang out between classes and get work done. Highly recommend if you want to learn.
The best professor Ive had, and i have had many. Chemistry is a difficult subject and he makes you understand the topics, rather than just dry memorizing them. He is incredibly funny and engaging. He reminds me of how physicist Richard Feynman would have taught.
Professor Reese is a professor who, unlike many other very smart professors, has actually mastered the art of teaching. His lectures are well rehearsed performances designed to engage the students and stimulate thought. Chem is difficult by nature and he demands work to pass. Not an easy A, but if you actually want to learn something take his class
Great lecturer! Terrible examiner. The exams are beyond hard. He does give you hints on what will be on the exam however, the content for Chemistry must not be taken lightly. It's a requirement to do the homework or else you won't pass. He constantly will tell you to do the homework if you want to pass his exams.
He's a great guy and very sarcastic. And he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. However, the exams are killer but if you do the homework and take notes during his lectures you'll pass. You will definitely learn something in this class.
Professor Reese gives tests that initially seem difficult at first, but they really make you think and rack your brain, and you learn a lot from his tests. His tests not only test you, but you learn from them. He is that good. Plus he always grades on a curve, so if you know your stuff, you should do well.
This is a VERY hard class no matter where you take it. Reese is soooo good at explaining things, and he cares. He is always around the chem study room to help. Yes he's a tough grader, but chem profs are. You WILL need to read the book. Put in the work and do the sample problems in the book, they usually help with homework step by step.
Puts lots of effort into effectively teaching the details while not losing sight of the big picture or the classes attention. Always done beautifully. Keeps high standards because he believes you are capable. Don't know any other prof willing to go through the trouble he goes through for the sake of his students. Must study relentlessly for an A.
Take pictures of the board, audio record the lectures to refer back to. Pay close attn. A lot is covered in class. Read ahead. Sit by someone who wants to do well. Answer questions even when unsure. Helps you learn. When you get stuck work with tutor. Focus on weaknesses. Youtube for memorization tricks. Practice, practice, and practice some more.
One of the most hardest professors I have ever taken, but the way he lectures engages you intensily. Homework and attendance does not affect grade, but it should be a top prioirty. EXAMS, extremly difficult. Pop Quizes (?). If he says "Do ch 4-8" DO IT. You'll pass if you know your stuff, but you gotta earn it.
Loved it so much I changed majors!! He can be mean and he knows it but I would still take Reese again because the lectures are super engaging. He wants you to participate (but sometimes his sass can feel discouraging). He goes over a LOT in lecture. Can get away without reading everything, but really recommend reading and studying outside of class.
HARDEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY LIFE. I was doing well in the beginning of the semester until mid semester came, I just got lost with all the materials that was covered. I tried catching up and reading the book, watched videos, and studied the notes extensively and still didn't understand the materials. His exams are difficult!
If you want to a professor who truly knows what he's talking about and is willing to work with you, take Reese! Take advantage of the tutoring service in the Chem work room especially since Reese is always in there willing to help. Reese is hilarious and makes his lectures interesting. Don't slack because it'll be super hard to catch up!
Oh man, Reeses class is a tough one. It takes more effort than average to do well. The material is either you get it if you dont so thats where the lower rating come from, honestly. If you want to learn real basic chemistry with truly intriguing lectures, Reeses class is a must take. You have to work hard if you want that A.
His lectures are very interesting and captivating and while his lectures are great, he does expect you to open up the textbook. Prepare to learn A LOT and putting time in to do the homework.
Professor Reese is a great professor, he cares for your success and will help you. But you'll need to ask questions or go into the chem workroom for that help. If you pay attention in lecture and follow along in the homework than it will be an easy class for you.
Overall this class is very intense. Need to open the textbook and learn some things on your own. would definitely recommend going into the work room if yoy dont understand. Topics and concepts will keep piling on. theres always chem teachers and tutors to help! use it!!!
Professor Reese is a good guy, but a very tough grader. I struggled in his class because of his teaching style. He takes a more hands off approach (as in, he asks you questions until you figure out the answer- or give up), and it's not for everyone. I did learn a lot of valuable information, but would probably not take a class from him again.
Dont take him if you're lazy. Hardest class i've taken but he's a great lecturer. he'll push you bc he wants you to learn. take it if you want a truly great professor but half my class didn't pass, so expect to WORK. at least he curves! GO TO THE WORKROOM. he'll take off points for the SMALLEST things but you can avoid that by going to the workroom
He is a really great professor, you just really need to read the textbook a lot, and go to the workroom. He may not be for everyone but he really wants you to learn and know you stuff.
Detailed and well thought out lectures explained both Chem concepts and how to use them. Clearly puts in a lot of effort before class starts. Available most days in the Chem Workroom for extra help. Very intense workload! Pay attention to the lectures, learn from your homework, and recognize when you should be spending time in the chem workroom.
Professor Reese is hands down the best professor. He genuinely cares about you and your education. You need to put in the work to do well or at least pass. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you really need to attend all lectures to know what's going on. GO TO THE CHEM WORKROOM! Professor Reese, other professors, and tutors are always there to help.
Reese is an excellent professor, and he does not coddle students (which is good!) It is imperative that you are able to commit a decent amount of time to try to understand the content (and do the required work). He illustrates the lectures on board, which are understandable most of the time, and shows much zeal about the subject. ALWAYS ask QNs!!!!
Mr. Reese's teaching style is convoluted and hard to follow. He spends more time trying to intimidate people with the material than making sense of it. He's condescending. He does the "tough teacher" act and is more focused on imparting his philosophies about life and academics than teaching chemistry. I wish I had chosen any other professor.
Okay so he seems cool at first but hes legit crazy hard! His lectures are pretty hard to follow, his exams/quizzes are very difficult and he knows hes a hard professor and he loves it. I recommend to not take his class! Avoid at all cost or be prepared to go slightly insane.
Complains a lot. Makes you feel wrong for asking questions. Doesnt give you specific answers. Always wants things to be his way. It always feels like Im in a toxic relationship whenever I talk to him.
Ok, when you look back at the comments from Spring 2020, take them with a grain of salt. I'm not saying they aren't wrong; yes, the exams and quizzes were hard, but we went online mid semester. That was hard on everybody and made everything else harder, too. People kind of stopped showing up. Work hard, and you'll get that A,but this is noteasy
You ever feel like you wanna pass but theres always someone telling you that youll never succeed? Well come to this class because if you dont read everything youre given, your just as good as the guy who reads for dummies books. Youll probably gain more answers and knowledge about general chemistry than this class from a Chem book for dummies.
Never met a professor that wanted to see his students fail. Very unclear, very unorganized, very rude, seems like he hates his job and his students. Unnecessary amount of homework, 30+ questions only to be worth 2 points. Dont take him
One of the worst professors I have ever had in my life. He expects you to always read the book and understand the material. It was hard transitioning online due to COVID-19 making EVERYTHING 10x harder. I wouldn't recommend taking him because he only makes you feel dumb when asking a question. He doesn't care about his students, only his favorites
Don't take this class with him. He is the worst professor and doesn't care about his students. He always makes things difficult and is very unclear with his instructions of what needs to be done and how it needs to be done.
With COVID-19, we shifted to online classes and he didn't care at all about this pandemic affecting his students. His lectures are very unorganized and scrambled everywhere! Sometimes he likes to be sarcastic with what he teaches us. A lot of attitude and very rude for his age. Don't listen to his old reviews.
This class is no joke. You need to take responsibility for your own success. Show up to class, put in maximum effort, attend lectures, and meet up with classmates for extra study sessions. If you're not prepared to take this class seriously, don't enroll. You will walk away with a sour taste. I put in 10-15 hours a week outside of class to get my A
His Class is clearly meant to make you think critically. He wants you to learn and understands what he teaches and is willing to help. He does want to see people pass. This semester has been challenging for him and his students as he had to coordinate during the Covid-19 mid semester. This professor will take your study habits to another level.
Yes, his class is tough he even admits it a couple of times during the semester but it really does show you whether or not you'll be ready for the classes ahead. Also if you really want to learn the material he's your best bet when it comes to mastering it.
INTENSE. He's an intense guy but not in an intimidating way. He knows his stuff and keeps his lectures entertaining and participatory without singling people out. Do not miss class , and don't hesitate to ask questions. Homework is graded and necessary to know what's on the test exactly. Great professor to get your foundational chemistry with.
Please take Spring 2020 reviews with a grain of salt, he's an older professor & switching to online *midsemester* was probably really hard for him. I had him in fall of 2019 and he was by far the best professor I've ever had. He had the greatest boardwork, incredibly funny & engaging. Will always help you if you have questions, great guy 10/10
Worst teacher I have ever had. I should of listen to the previous reviews. I reached out multiple times and he basically said he doesn't care if we pass or fail his class. You have to do the problems his way or else he will mark them as wrong. I did some problems the way that I felt comfortable using and it received a 0.
I took this class online due to COVID-19, and I failed his class. Mind you, I have NEVER failed or had to drop a class, but he definitely doesn't seem like he actually cares about his students. He's very rude through emails, never helpful, and speeds through lectures like we're supposed to get it right away. He grades hard, everything is TOUGH!
This review is solely based off of COVID-19 zoom classes. Professor Reese is undoubtedly a tough, demanding, and at times, condescending. Due to the course being online, a plethora of problems have occurred that have been detrimental to students learning. There was an incident involving a pop-quiz being inaccessible and he still gave students 0s
Unless you have a strong chemistry background, don't bother with Reese. He is often condescending and is ill-equipped to teach online. He is very unhelpful and basically told students to drop his class because he "doesn't want to give F's", but if you ask for help he will make you feel very stupid and calls you out in class.
Had Reese for Fall 2020 online (due to COVID). He is condescending and unsympathetic. Extremely lecture heavy, tons and tons of homework, difficult exams, pop quizzes. 65% of his students this semester failed; prepare to rely on your classmates and youtube for help, NOT Professor Reese!!
(Fall 2020 -Both lecture and lab) He does a good job explaining during lectures, however, he can be very rude and sarcastic in his emails, so watch out for that. Likes to give feedback like "if you want an A, just turn in A's." Do not go to this class expecting an easy A or B. Prepare to teach material to yourself.
Hes harsh on grading especially when the class is completely online. Mod for his students fail the course. I would not recommend his class. Most students repeat the course, leaving a bad record on their transcript.
Professor Reese is well intentioned and wants to see his students succeed. It is a hard class, theres a lot of homework, lecture videos, and its exam/ quiz heavy. It will not be easy, dont expect to pass if you do not put in the effort. Tips: Read the textbook, do the homework, put in extra effort into studying the material, dont cheat.
Not a bad lecturer. Sometimes makes concepts more accessible, sometimes more confusing. Drones without checking in for understanding. Does not return homework with feedback until it's too late to study for the exam. Uses class time to tell you to work instead of helping you understand. He demonstrates, you struggle on your own, he measures.
He's sarcastic and has very strict beliefs. So many people dropped and wasted money. Deducts points over very tiny things. Over half the class got a D. Warning he will try to act nice in the beginning because he knows people talk bad about him. Claims he's blunt but is just straight up rude. Very bad at explaining
Hard but worth the work.
If youre on fafsa, dont take this youll fail & owe $. Dont take if you have depression- almost unalived myself bc of his class. Expect to spend 18+ hrs a week studying or fail. Graded on things that have nothing to do with Chem. Highlighted your answer? -1. Cant submit a flawless pdf? 0/25. 1/2 the class taking this semester failed w/ him b4.
Get ready to study and work over 20hrs a week. Quizzes every class, assignments that are 6-7 pages long can take a whole day. I heard nothing but horrible reviews about Reese and it's all true. One thing about him though that is actually good is that he really does care about his students, to show his care he damages your mental health
I've had hard courses to work for, but this prof. makes it impossible to pass. If you have to curve your students D+F at the end of the semester to B's and C's, did they actually learn anything? I emailed for help and his reply was no at first, then said "fine but this makes more work for me". Learned more from a prof in summer. Good chemistry to u
He does not coddle students, but he is a lot more patient than these other reviews make him out to be. Lecture time is FOR ASKING QUESTIONS. You have to be engaging and actively listening, not just screenshotting (sometimes he will only partially draw out an example and verbally explain). If you want an A, put in effort and manage ur time.
Class isn't mandatory but if you aren't going to show up, make sure to check for a quiz around the class end time. He posts lectures that clarify the textbook, so read the textbook, watch the lectures, do the homework, ask questions in class. This isn't a class where you put your pride first. Put your learning over your pride and be respectful.
If you want a good, challenging, funny and fair professor, this is your guy! These other reviewers who gave him a low score just don't know what college is about and forget that you need to apply yourself too. This guy will guide you in the right direction if you're willing to work with him. Just be open to the experience, it's worth it.
No clear guidelines for showing work and unfair grader. Inconsistent feedback for our work. Deduction for sig figs/lack of units is valid, but is unfair when full work does not match w his unknown expectations. He is knowledgable but doesnt want to help explain and tells us to ask our classmates instead, even when we already discussed beforehand.
Participation is truly the key to doing well, ESPECIALLY if you are struggling. I found this class to be extremely rewarding under the conditions that you pace yourself with the lectures and do the homework before class. I learned so much from this class and his video lectures are great. Ask questions and try to learn for yourself, not the grade.
I cannot stress this enough but he grades the most unnecessary stuff. EX: submitted PDF files and got deducted points for it because I apparently submitted more than one. Yes he curves tests, but curving not gon do anything. I ended up withdrawing from the class. AND HIS EXAMS ARE NOTHING LIKE THE STUDY GUIDES
I took his class spring semester. His class was hard I thought I was going to fail. His reason for making his class hard is to prepare us for higher level courses at a University, but I dont think it's worth going through all that stress and anxiety just for a transfer degree :|
Online class and I listened to the lectures. He did not explain things like he should and when asked for clarification he made it more confusing. Tests were hard and he deducted points for many things. I thought I was just bad at science, it was just the teacher. I became suicidal. Class dropped. Took w/diff prof with an A.
Gives a lot of homework since there's a LOT of material & goes over the subjects pretty well most of the time. Open to questions, but can be condescending! Gives quizzes almost every week. Hw+quizzes are worth 5pts. Real issue is the four 2-part EXAMS worth most of ur grade. Q's are very complicated & u must finish, make pdf, then submit in ~1hr.
Super condescending and unapproachable. Treats students like we are all dumb. Marks off points if your homework is neat and concise but it's not done his way, which is impossible to nail down. Complains all the time about how many students he has.
This guy tells great stories, but the guy basically gave up on teaching students directly; the only way to learn anything is by reading the book which he helped write, and somehow that means not having to really teach where instead he just tells you to read. If the lectures and book are so good then why do there need to be videos explaining it all?
The labs are videos that feel like they move at a snail's pace and, honestly, this guy makes this 1cr class feel like it's worth 3. I thought I could take 4 real classes+ this lab and get some easy As cause I was a G in high school chemistry, but there's no way to keep up on other class' readings when you have to deal with this convoluted as class.
CHANGED BEHAVIOR IS THE KEY TO PASS THIS CLASS. A Professor that wants you to truly understand the basics and foundations of chemistry. It may feel like you don't get it, but ASK QUESTIONS! If push comes to shove, irritate this professor by showing up in his office hours. DON'T GIVE UP.
Professor Reese's humor made this class enjoyable, and his tough love separated the strong from the weak. Do NOT take this class along with 3 other classes AND work full time like I did. Total death trap. Not saying its unachievable, just know how to distribute your time accordingly. Put your big girl/boy pants on and you'll be fine. Thnx Professor
Very funny and enjoyable during class. Not very helpful anywhere else. Attendance is 'technically' not mandatory, but will drop pop quizzes at the end of classes randomly. You have to read the textbook on your own, doesn't talk about it during class. Only answers some or none of people's emails, claims he gets so many that you shouldn't email him.
I learned a lot from his chemistry class. He is casual but funny and dedicated. It can be a tough subject, but he paces it slowly. And if you couldn't catch up, he doesn't hesitate giving you support! Yes there was a lot of homework but it was very helpful. And he had the tutoring zoom session every week so students could just pop in and get help.
The tests are completely different from the homework, just to warn you. The tests use made up units and some really weird questions that are different from the homework, so they are hard to pass and are curved. The class time, via zoom, is just used to go over problems and ask questions, learn on your own via videos and teh textbook. Take in person
Hw 5 pts, lots of questions, pdf isn't up to his standards he docks pts. Lectures were terrible, talked down to his students like we are dumb. 2 part exams, written you get hour to complete 5 written questions, makes it so you dont get a high score, scan pdf, and submit. and multiple choice/fill in the blank, easier but only 50 mins
This professor was difficult, period. The four big exams drastically outweigh the quizzes and homework. Study hard. Every tiny detail missed is a dock in points. The exams are much more difficult than the homework. He has a "corny" sense of humor and at times, can make his students feel less than through his weekly rants about the class's habits.
The labs were 3-credit course-worthy. A handful of the answers, or how to get them, can be found in the lab. His grading techniques were harsh. Each time his pencil hit the paper meant a point deduction. A lot of points are lost to significant figures and units. He does offer a chance to receive better odds by showing it to him via Zoom.
Read the lab before class, participate and ask questions. Have him look over labs on zoom. Don't make the same mistakes all semester. Understand sig figs early on. Compare labs with other people. Appreciates a good pdf.. doesn't like unnecessary arrows. Random quizzes, so just attend the lab.
First week or so felt like trial by fire. Learning from mistakes and improving are important. Participate in class, ask questions, join zoom office hours, and connect with peers. It may seem like everyone is failing and that all hope is lost, but it'll all work out in the end. Don't run out of steam at the end of the semester!
Tough grader and difficult class
Awful professor. Cares more about the homework looking neat and presentable rather than the answers being correct. He's rude and condescending and will get upset if things aren't done his way. I would rather drop the course and wait until I can find a different course with a better professor. Save your time and money, don't register for his class.
Hated this class. He was constantly making us feel dumb for asking any kind of question. He thinks he is so much better than anyone. If you don't do exactly what he wants he takes away point. Don't put equal signs (=) -1 point.
You'd be better off just reading the textbook and teaching yourself. This guy is over being a teacher and is just in it for the paycheck at this point. He makes people feel stupid for asking questions and grades based on his personal OCD. I've had many teachers and he is one of the worst I've ever had.
His lectures are very chaotic. Admitted our final should have taken us 2 hours even though its scheduled for 1.5 hours. Admitted that we shouldn't be doing well on the exams bc he knows its hard & doesn't match homework. Grades curved my semester but someone else said he the prev semester. My 60/70% was curved to an A, crazy.
Watch his videos! Shows EXACTLY what he wants. Spread HW over 2-3 days, do before class or you will be LOST. See tutors for help. Do NOT take if you work 20+ hrs per/wk. Be mentally ready to spend 15-20 hrs per/wk to understand material. Try stay above class averages (final grade = 85% exams). C+ was curved to an A. Class will test your resolve.
He doesnt come to class to teach you, he comes to solve homework you were supposed to do. You literally have to teach yourself and use him like a tutor, dont you dare ask dumb questions because he'll make sure you feel like the dumbest person. I watched him argue with a student while we were all online IF HE'S YOUR LAST CHOISE DONT DO IT!
Took over summer. Naturally the work was more condensed and tougher. Comes off as condescending, but cares about students' understanding. Ask him to explain something and he'll do it, also uses HW as examples. Grades harshly, marks off points seemingly out of OCD (you need good formatted work). Lecture vids are very helpful. Tests are difficult.
This guy makes me hate Chemistry. He is a tough grader and takes off points for the most minor things (sig figs, formatting, boxing final answer, etc.). Likes to point out people who are not paying attention in his online labs (so niele). Be ready to answer questions when he calls u out. I already didn't like Chem but he makes js makes it worse.
Awful experience I paid for his course hoping to learn but instead was greeted with nothing but disrespect from the very beginning of class. 20 other students are present on the screen but he always called on the same students, mine always being the first. It was like he assumed I was a slacker from the very beginning.
This class is a real challenge, but using unstuck AI alongside the textbook and office hours can really help you stay on top of the material. Be prepared to put in 15-20 hours per week and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Grading is very detailed. Deducts points for missing units, wrong use of equal sign, boxed answers. Be prepared to work extra hard, lots of hours on hw and studying. Was told he was a great teacher, but witnessed him ignore a student that was asking a question. Exams are nothing like the hw, he makes up some of thew questions that confuses us all.
Learn from my mistake and listen to the reviews. I cannot stress enough how tough this guy is with grading. He is willing to help, but you need to meet him halfway or he will not help at all, which is fair. He does not like being emailed so chances of replies are slim to none. Talk to him on zoom. If you take, get ready for a hell of a challenge.
Professor Reese is a great professor if you are serious about being a student. You will learn how to learn in his class. It isn't an easy class but you'll find that other classes are much more manageable when you take his class. There needs to be a Professor Reese in every student's academic journey. He's always available in the zoom room to help.
Don't take him, that's all you need to know.
For the first half of the semester, expect quizzes every week. If you're having trouble with this class, go to his zoom around 7-10pm and he is willing to help.
I came to the class without any knowledge of what was happening because the professor never discussed what the class schedule was going to be. I was in a bad place for a while and he did not even care. I've been trying my best but I couldn't because he would not let me.
This is not a teacher. This is an abuser who still lives in the 80s mentally. He is out of touch with modern day learning and workforce. He is manipulative and will lie to you in the middle of his lectures. To the person that hurt this mans pride however many years ago, kudos to you. I could go on but space is limited. AVOID AT ALL COST!
I personally didn't like him. Not very helpful when it comes to not understanding and needing guidance or help.
He is honestly such a terrible professor. I tried going to his tutor zooms and he wasn't helpful at all, he basically just told me I was wrong and never tried to actually help me. His lab handouts make no sense even after reading the instructions. I wish I had dropped out earlier so now I am stuck with most likely failing this class.
Y'all please do not be dumb…do not take them if you can take the class with another Professor. I know you probably think that you can tough it out…but I promise you…you won't. Like please listen to the other reviews….im not even joking….you really gotta do it his way or it's the highway…safe your self the stress and take it with another Professor.
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. No need to read the book, just show up for class and you'll probably get an A. There are quizzes but he lets you chatgpt it all so its chill. All online too so you don't even have to drive. So long as you do the homework youll probably get full credit so don't sweat it.
Expect to put in 25-30 hours of work a week in this class including lecture. It is very likely that you will drop this class. Only 6 of 25 students made it to the final exam. Do not take this class if you have full schedule of stem classes. If you are serious about medical school this is for you. If you are engineering ehhh choose a different Prof.
Says attendance isn't mandatory, but you won't have access to end-of-lecture quizzes if you don't attend. Those quizzes are timed, must be completed immediately, and vague. Material not difficult, but wanted work laid out in very specific way (or would give bad HW/test grade). He liked trauma dumping and seemed to have trust issues, esp. w/ exams.
Professor Reese is an excellent professor who cares about his students. His lectures are easy to follow, and he answers students' questions starting from the basics. Do the homework the night before it's due. Come to class with questions about the homework. Don't take anything personally, attend his office hours, and learn from your mistakes.
I took this class during summer and that reflects my grade but I would definitely retake his class. His grading criteria is strict and it was just careless errors. The most amazing was the tutoring sessions that was available. It was amazing and each session was around 2-3 hours and he, along with a tutor would just help with any problems we had.
Genuinely cares about helping you understand. Yes, he's a “tough grader,” but just follow directions, label units, check sig figs, and go to his nightly Zoom room to ask questions and go over your work. Chat with other students to compare and stay on top of labs. Accelerated course is manageable but expect to spend 15–20 hrs/week on homework.
He makes bad students good and good students better. Idk about the trauma dumping someone mentioned earlier. 95% of what he talks about is chemistry, the other 5% is just to lighten the mood and connect with the student. He's particular about work presentation, but just be mindful of reading his feedback. Go to office hours. Good professor for STEM
He comes off as intimidating, but he's very passionate about guiding students and I learned a ton. The labs are confusing at first, but he hosts Zoom tutoring sessions several days a week and they are massively helpful. His lectures are great- very well-explained. VERY difficult if you don't actively go to class and work with other students.
Dr. Reese cares students and spends a lot of his time to give us good feedback on assignments and during night zoom rooms. He is available almost everyday in the zoom without making an appointment. Tough on grading but as long as you read his feedback on the previous assignment and show up to ask questions you have you will be fine.
In general, great professor. He will make sure you know what you're doing. Took me a while to get used to his teaching style, expected us to get used to his teaching style right off the bat. Marks off a whole point for a little mistake. The content itself wasn't that hard, its only hard because of how specific he wanted the work to be done.
Summer lab/lecture, pace was brutal (my fault). Was spooked by reviews but glad I chose him. "Reverse classroom" style teaching: lecture = unofficial office hours (attend the actual ones too!). Particular about presentation of math. MUST do HW and then some to succeed. Not a breeze, but 1,000% worth it if you're willing to work for growth.
Extremely strict at grading as well as unclear. There's a lot of things they won't let me say about his bragging about certain aspects like failing students or having them drop but just know every class he has is half the class dropping and the other half failing or gettin a D
