For a class that is designed to teach you how to write a research paper I found it difficult to choose a topic that this professor did not already have a strong opinion about. The techniques were taught well but, the final was strictly graded with open ended questions that were difficult to understand. This class was a constant struggle.
He is a decent professor. He likes his essays in a very specific structure. As long as you ensure that everything he says that is needed in there is in there, you should be okay.
I have spent days trying to make sure everything he wants are in my paper and still cannot make him happy. None of the feedback coincides with the rubric. I hade an A is ENG 101 and if Im lucky I will pass this class with a C. Lectures arent boring, thats the only positive thing I can say.
Rude, know it all, narcissistic. acts like you should already know how to do everything exactly how he wants it. wants you to fail, unless you practically write the paper in his office.
Honestly he is a good professor, but he wants what he wants and if you don't have what he wants then you might get a bad grade. Just meet his expectauions and you should be fine, But overall a very good professor.
Deserves his low 2.0 rating. Roberts cares about his reputation (as stated in class) and not his students. He inflicts anxiety-causing pressure on his students. His expectations of essays are vaguely stated and will allow you to learn incorrectly unless you checkup & see him outside of class constantly. He is a teacher with weak accountability.
Extremely Rude and Strict Will yell at you either in his office, class or via email if you do an assignment/essay incorrectly or not up to his standards More worried about being right than helping correct his students If you are someone like me that struggles with English, writing, and grammar I recommend a different professor
Dr. Robert is an excellent professor. He lays everything out in a specific clear and concise order from the beginning of an assignment to end . He grades from the rubric that was handed out With the assignment. There are no surprises. He will go the extra mile to help you develop your writing structure and technique. Hes caring and considerate.
I am almost 100% sure that the "top rating" on here was written by Professor Roberts. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. I love love English and have always enjoyed writing papers. My first paper I wrote for this class I got a 63 and the only feedback was that I was off topic He has no recorded lectures, no course calendar, and no respect for his students.
Since the beginning of this class I have had a hard time. I have always been good in my English classes and he has made it so difficult and discouraging. Everything he grades is an F, I complete an assignment after checking for errors multiple times and he chews it up each time. There is always something wrong and his feedback is extremely rude!
If you are looking at this, switch out of his class. You WILL make lower than a B. He is the rudest teacher Ive ever had and he does not care about his students at all. Papers are not clear, he is an extremely tough grader, and overall an unpleasant person. Quizzes dont follow PowerPoints. Also he used building a border wall as an example....
He was hard but if you try and do what is expected youll do fine. he hands out a rubric of his expectations, follow that and youre golden. if you dont follow it... youll fail.
SWITCH OUT OF THIS CLASS! I promise you will be making a big mistake if not. I used to love writing. I will never be able to enjoy it again after taking this class. This teacher was so mean. I was completely stressed all semester. His feedback would make me cry. He leaves no room for any type of creativity. He is the worst person I have ever met.
This class is hard but if you listen and do what is expected of you, youll be fine. This class is not for people who dont follow directions and have no worth ethic.

He is really strict, his directions aren't clear and if you misunderstand an assignment your grade will hurt. I didn't use any of the textbooks. I would def take advantage of the free tutoring/ tutor me. Email him just to clarify certain things. Had him online, his quizzes were five minutes long, doesnt give more time. More essays towards the end.
Horrible grader on essays. Feedback is only degrading & never helpful & he will not willingly help you to fix issues. Quizzes are easy but essays are never good enough for him. I have two weeks left for this class & the only way I'm passing is cos of quiz grades & discussion posts. I have friends who have had him & they have had the same experience
Professor Roberts was SO rude, not accessible outside of class, was not helpful in the slightest, would not answer any questions regarding assignments and quizzes and on the rare occasion that he did answer he would publicly embarrass you by saying "I've already talked about this", very condescending and would not be accommodating. too many tests.
Unorganized, he will have the directions for an assignment in several different places that are hard to find. Unclear on what he expects from an assignment. Quizzes are timed, you only have 5 minutes and most of the time there are more than 5 questions. Awful.
Make one mistake on an essay and your grade plummets. The feedback that he gives has nothing to do with improving your writing. Extremely forgetful. His grading criteria is not clear what-so-ever, it is like trying to figure out a riddle. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. If there is no other English for the semester then wait to the next semester.
You will be expected to complete a lot of short quizzes and essays while enrolled in this course. Make sure you hold yourself accountable and seek assistance as necessary. Professor Roberts is considerate of your time and replies quickly when you email him. I want you to create your own opinion since I had a great time learning from him.
Here's the deal, if you want a Professor who will push you and make you a better writer... it's him. Dr Roberts isn't the easiest but if you pay attention, follow directions and give it your all... you will be a better writer after the class. I feel like he's fair and he does care about his students. Recommend taking him in person over online.

This professor is horrible, he doesn't care about you as a student he cares more about just getting his job done instead of worrying about how the students learn. He is completely rude and shows his students no respect. I expected in college to not be treated like a child.
If you are not extremely, and I mean extremely, left-leaning, he will sniff it out and fail you every time. Online, he provides unclear instructions, rude emails, and expects way too much out of students without giving them clear instructions. He is the worst teacher/professor I've ever had.

Very good teacher. You need to follow his directions. He helps with advices ( always). Will always reply to emails. I enjoyed this class and definitely learned a lot. I would take him again. If you are not planning to work you need another professor.
Dr. Roberts is an amazing professor. He makes his expectations very clear on the first day of class, and does not ask for anything more than that. He gives you everything you need to be prepared for every quiz and lecture. He is available outside of class, and always answers to emails. He was so much fun, and I would take his class again.
Dr. Roberts has a tough shell to brake but once its broken he becomes a whole new person. He takes great pride in making sure his students become a much better writer by the end of the course. As long as you pay attention to his directions this class should be a refreshing breeze and easy grade. I would 100% recommend him for any english course
First off, Dr Roberts is one of my favorite professors ever, he is highly educated and has had experience in many things, he is a prominent author and his books are amazing, his teaching style is great and always keeps students engaged, he teaches critical thinking and is truly a blessing to HGTC, 10/10 would take again.
Dr. Roberts deserves credit for how engaged he is with his students, but is ridiculously nit-picky. When it comes to essays. His standards could be described as rigid if they weren't so arbitrary. He offers little or no advice for improvement, and when I once asked him if he could elaborate on what he expected from us, he was rude and snappy.

He will treat you and your class the same way that you treat him. If you are respectful, you will receive that and more back from him. It's very clear from what he expects and wants nothing more than to make others better writers, even if that means reviewing the basics. Find something you have in common with the guy and chat away.
When you come to class be prepared to learn. Your active listening skills, participation, and note taking are vital for this class. Dr. Roberts wants his students to succeed, and gives you the tools for it. It's up to you with what you decide to do with that. Be open to him! I gained so much, as he is truly inspirational.

Having been out of school for 30 years it was a challenge in the beginning, however, by the end of the semester I got so much out of what he taught. Dr. Roberts is by far the most amazing English teacher I have had. He is very understanding of outside circumstances (within reason). At first I wasn't too excited about this class, but by the end of the semester I was very happy that I stuck with it. I learned so much from Dr, Roberts. The essays are get a little harder each time. Follow the rubric, and you will be fine.

Honestly, I am unsure why there are negative reviews about Dr. Roberts. He is not a bad professor. He is picky on grading, but isn't that the purpose? We are in the class to be better writers. So don't place blame on the professor if you aren't putting in the effort to pass a class that he makes it to where you can pass.

It can be embarrassing for students that speak while class is in session as this is a pet peeve of his. You're in class, so even a little bit of chatter would be very disruptive.

Absolutely horrible prof! He would always talk about his other English classes and take his anger and frustration out on my class. He said that he gives out extra credit if you "stand out" to him, I never got any form of extra credit. As a class we did readings and he would get mad when students did interpret the way he interprets the text. Awful!

While understanding that Dr.Roberts can be somewhat rude and double sided. He is very good at teaching. When you come to college, people forget standards. it's difficult and frustrating to be put in a situation where you must take accountability. Dr.Roberts makes sure everyone does their best, by holding them accountable. Just do your best!
Dr. Roberts was an amazing professor. His writing structure is something that I'll take with me through my years in college, and his class has been fantastic. To succeed in his English 101, you have to actually care. Using AI and being a sloppy writer will do nothing but fail you, as well as set a poor standard with him. Work hard & don't be lazy!

Taking English 101 with Dr. Roberts has been an absolute pleasure! He easily taught me and others in the class the writing process that broke down each step in writing an essay. His humor is what kept us drawn to the lesson and he gave many opportunities for extra credit. I will continue to use what he taught me in other classes moving forward.
