The great filibuster- interesting classes but grades tough.
Phil and Poli Sci majors, this prof captures the essense of pure thought and reason. He overflows with knowlege, is energetic, poetic at times, and watching him teach is almost like going to a broadway show. Very well spoken and enlightening.
You either like his teaching style, or you don't. I liked it. He certainly knows his subject and you will certainly learn alot if you pay attention
Professor Rosano is a gifted instructor. I wish I had taped his lectures.
Very knowledgable! You can be challanged and learn alot. Can be condecending as well as not being helpful outside of class.
Really entertaining prof. He loves to "make hay" and he'll do so past the class time. He's kind of inconsistent and unclear with instruction and grading. DON'T take this for an elective like I did, only if you really enjoy and understand Socrates.
HARD grader, if you LOVE history then maybe you have a fighting chance. He expects your papers to involve deep, serious critical thinking. Expect to work hard and get a B
Everyone on this is crazy if they think this is an awesome class. I've never endured such torture. He actually does grade fairly (even thought he writes about 6 pages of corrections) and if you write well and understand you can get a B. BUT, he was sooo intimidating and the reading is pure hell.
I loved this class!
VERY Entertaining! A little bit of reading but just one small warning. Don't sit in the first 2 rows of seats closest to the blackboard. He has a tendancy to spray it as he says it. Nice guy though.
Prof. Rosano is a great teacher. He will really make you think in this class. Lectures tend to get boring, but he really knows the material. Your grade is based on 3 (6-7 page) papers. Read the material well and use citations in your papers and you will do fine.
He is an amazing teacher. I loved his class, it is to the point but his class requires a lot of reading.

Professor ROSANO is the BEST. you learn a lot in his class. he makes you think and write accordingly. If you are serious about your education take Rosano and you will love his teaching. Great personality also.
Great Professor
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ROSANO! He doesn't help, He confuses you, he puts you on the spot, he's annoying, he's a nit picker and he thinks he's the smartest man and nobody can outsmart him. I regret taking this class!
not bad for a guy from Jersey;)
Jaw dropping lectures. He knows what he's talking about, no doubt. Wonderful teacher. Minor setback: I can't read a word of what he writes.
He is a nice guy, very very smart. He knows what he's talking about, and there are great discussions in class. Papers are impossible to write because you cover so much material you don't know what he wants. Be ready to READ
Jerk, I hate him! DON'T Take him unless u like to be put on the spot and he's the hardest grader ever! Impossible A.
the best prof ever. this man puts scorates to shame. he is a walking genius. take as many classes with him as you can. also a wanderful person.
Dude was on another planet. Even though I got a B+, it was a pain-in-the-neck to read Hobbes and the rest of them and then deal with him trying to explain it to you as if you are Aristotle. I haven't had or seen him in a while, but he would wander around campus contemplating things. I like to learn about the present and not fanatsize politics.
I was fortunate enough to take one of professor Rosano's courses in my first semester at UMD. As a result, I decided to major in political science.
Not what i expected but very good class none the less... very good grader but be prepared to work. Earning an A in this class is a great accomplishment and i did it!
Great professor, not too hard of a greader, 3 papers the entire semester, no actual written final but TONS of reading and lots of writing. Be prepared to put your brain to use in his class. Awesome professor.
He walks around the class lecturing which not very many professors do. Despite this he's very thorough in the beginning which is very helpful. All "exams" are take-home, so you basically have three papers. He basically wants to see your OWN analysis. If you can do that and you will be fine in this class.
Boring, you can skip sometimes, but hes a bit arrogant
Awesome professor; very interresting lectures. He's a walking brain! I love his lectures, very enlightening and makes you think! Good for U of M to have him. Pleasure being in his classes. If you're prepared to think, take his class, otherwise you won't do good.
Great professor. Hard subject & materials to read but his awesome lectures make things clear in the end. I can definetly say he's not boring at all. Be wise and don't sit in the first row in his class - you'll discover why!!! 3 papers the entire semester, do them on your own!!!! He's extremely smart, knows his stuff well and is not bad looking!
BEYOND boring! Obnoxious, too. Has catchphrases that he repeats over and over - very annoying. Class is entirely based on class discussion and papers. Discussion goes in long, tiresome circles that don't make any sense and are completely tedious and useless. Waste of time!!
This professor is horrible, you can't understand anything because he's too busy yelling out of his lungs when he's talking and puts you on the spot to see if you've read the material. His class is only easy if you sit down and read and re-read all the books until you finally know what he's talking about; only good thing, exams are take-home....
I dont know why people complain. Rosany teaches real Philosophy. He doesnt teach Henry Ford CC crap. If you are serious about learning something take Rosano. he is very helpfull. He is not a hard grader, and he takes into consideration that most student (especially the one that are complaining) are stupid and dont get it. He is a decent professor.
His entire lectures could be summarized into about half the class time because he spends all his time yelling and repeating himself. Doesn't teach how to do citations in papers, which you need to know for the following classes in the honors program. Lectures are unsubstantial. Horribly annoying to boot.
So much academic babble, so little substance. Spends all his time yelling and repeating himself. Papers are nearly impossible to write because his directions are frustrating and unclear. Occasionally class discussion is enlightening, but overall, this class was a waste of time and more work than it was worth.
Rosano knows his stuff and is an adept lecturer; however, the issues in this class can get extremely confusing. He asks a lot of rhetorical questions and sometimes talks in circles. The class requires full attention for the whole 2.5-3 hrs and can be very tiring. I do think Rosano is a good prof, but I have NO interest in philosophy.
This professor is hard, if you are looking for an easy class do not take. He is very arrogant and trashes your paper unless it is a masterpiece. His criticism is not constructive. I would not take him if you can help it.
Prof. Rosano can be a bit intimidating. However, you'll learn a lot if you take one of his classes- he'll help you learn to think about political philosophy in an entirely new light. Grade is based entirely on 3 papers and attendance. He's a hard grader, but still worth taking!
Im not even a political science major and I got a b+ in this class. just show up for every class because if you miss one youll be lost. Rosano is a smart guy and understands if you have truoble understnading this hard material. I would definetly reccomend this class but only for those of you who are not lazy.
TOO MANY PAPERS TO BE DONE IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.
Prof. Rosano's classes are no doubt difficult, especially if you aren't interested in the subject. You simply cannot miss class because lecture notes are the most important things when you're preparing to write the papers. Although he completely annihilates your paper with corrections, he actually is a fair grader. He's quite intimidating because
Considering I had no interest in this class whatsoever, it was difficult for me to pay attention and understand the material; however, Professor Rosano made it understandable if you followed his lectures. Attend every class if you don't want to be lost, but he will guide you through the process.
I LOVE him. The class is easy if you attend his class and take notes. Put his notes back on your paper and you get a good grade. He is great if you want to learn.
Professor Rosano is a great teacher. His class was very inciteful and has me understand American liberty in a a way I never had before. He is a fair grader but you must put in the work, and there is a lot of reading.
Excellent in every way. I was not a poly sci major, but ended up loving the class because of him. I learned so much! It was hard, you had to work hard but big payoff in what you learn. He really made you think. I was an "older" student Bio major, but had to take as a requirement, so glad I did!
He is weird but knows his philosophy...which is probably what makes him weird. I didn't see eye to eye with him...I didnt know I was taking a philosophy class...it crosslisted at pol sci and crj...i dont think phil. He is so smart but has poor social skills.
Very intelligent professor. However, he is very critical and expects alot from students. Even if you meet him for office hours to discuss assignments, the criticism is not helpful. Avoid if you are no willing to work VERY HARD
NICE PROFESSOR VERY ECCENTRIC TAKES YOU FOR A SPIN BEFORE YOU EVEN UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL. I DIDNT GET ANY OF IT. NOTICES IF YOU USE OUTSIDE SOURCES FOR PAPERS. CLASS CONSISTS OF AL PAPERS 2-3 PAPERS ALTOGETHER.
I had him for Modern Political Theory. The man is crazy, but he gets the material across well. DO THE READINGS and DON'T SKIP. If you miss a day, unless you have a friend with a tape recorder, you'll be lost.
Wonderful professor. His passion for the subject makes it easier to understand the material. You must be committed to this course, critical analysis of the material is a MUST!!!
3 classes with Prof. Rosano. Not for the faint of heart, but take him if you want a *real* education. Grade is based on 3 papers, each 4 pages long. His courses changed my life. Political philosophy junkies: enjoy!
You learn a lot. Do the readings, know the material. He will randomly ask you questions in class, and that's how he knows whether you're keeping up or not. Grades based on papers. He knows his stuff really well, and teaches it in away that students understand.
Very passionate, always tries to get the best from his students. Delves deeply into every reading and makes you as interested in it as he is. Just an amazing Prof. Plus, he's a spiffy dresser, and not too bad looking!
Professor Rosano is fascinating. He makes hours go by like minutes. Unbelievable speaker with a passion for teaching. Really knows his history and political philosophy. I have never enjoyed a class so much. I will take all of his other classes if I can. Not an easy A, so don't take his classes unless you sincerely want to learn. Highly recommend!!
Do yourself a favor and take this professor. He's by no means an easy A (although an A is attainable), but Prof. Rosano expands your mind and you learn to think in new ways about politics. He's very passionate as well. You must do the reading before class, as he uses the Socratic method. Your grade is from 3 or 4 essays.
Rosano is Awesome! He is my favorite professor. He allows free thinking in his papers and in class if you can back your claims with textual evidence. Additionally, if you start with a poor grade and improve through the class he tends to forgive poor beginning grades; Rosano has always helped me improve my writing ability when I sought his help. :)
I had him for Amer Political Thought and will be in his Modern Political Theory course... Awesome and intellectual professor and NEVER bias when interpreting philosophers!
No tests. Your grade is determined by 3 different five page papers only. Talks tough, but grades easier than he says he does. Class is painfully boring at times and he will NEVER let you out early (even kept us past 9pm before). Has a sign-in sheet each class and he will fail you if you miss more than 4 classes. Not good at responding to E-mails.
Rosano is the best professor you can take for Hist 365. He is a passionate and engaging speaker. I have never thought as deeply or thoroughly as I did in his class. An A is attainable if you give yourself a few days to write your papers. You don't really have to do all of the reading, as he takes you through the text pretty well in class.
class is 3 papers from readings and notes in class. Can't skip class. I'm a slacker and got a B+ in the class. If you aren't a very good writer, dont bother. If you dont want to read a whole bunch, dont bother. If you want any easy A, deff go somewhere else. If you care about the material, Rosano is great. If you just want the A,not myrecomendation
You are kidding yourself if you attend college thinking your task is to earn grades. You are beyond wrong if you think you will find a better professor anywhere else. If you don't read or write well you will miss both points entirely, every time.
Amazing professor. You must be at full attention during class and be willing to work very hard. Genius at interpreting text. Also very pretentious. Thinks he's Socrates, or the best thing since sliced bred, baby.
He is an amazing professor for this class, and is not afraid to tell you if you need to improve on something.
He's the bees knees, baby! Best teacher I have ever had. Don't expect a blow-off class, you need to read and KNOW the material. If you're a pursuer of philosophy, it's time to sign up.
Graded on improvement, which saved my grade. His lectures are great but the material is so dense that it can be a challenge to get good grades on the papers, which make up all of your grade. It's academic boot camp and at times it's very stressful but he's clearly brilliant at what he does... But be prepared for some upsetting grades!
He seems intimidating at first, but is honestly one of the best professors on campus. He expects you to do a lot more work outside the classroom, but he is extremely helpful and is very passionate about what he teaches. Very privileged to have had him my freshman year!
This class is not an easy A, but if you want a real education it's the place to be. Papers are based on a thorough understanding of the text, all analysis, no outside sources. It's a political philosophy bootcamp, but you'll love it, baby.
I took four of his classes. He is a great teacher. I took those courses ten years ago and still have my papers and books with all the notes. I reread, The Federalist Papers, three times after I took his class. He helps you understand and enjoy the material he covers.
Very energetic professor and introduces a lot of interesting concepts in lecture. He has fair but rigorous standards for grading essays. That being said, the line between an A and A- is dependent on his subjective view of what qualifies as analysis instead of assertion.
Rosano is honestly amazing. He is a very tough grader, but he will always take the chance to give you the higher grade. If you show progress in your work and dedication to the class, then you are set. But be warned, he WILL know if you write your essays the break before class.
Amazing lectures, very engaging class, and tough papers. But he's always very clear on what he wants, and he's always willing to give a rewrite on your paper. If your're willing to work/read/write, want an excellent education, and become more informed, take this prof's class.
Rosano can be intimidating at first, but he's actually really awesome. The class and its essays are pretty tough, but if you improve throughout the course he will always give you the better grades instead. I thought I was a goner during this class but he helped me through. You're going to have to work hard to earn an A, but it's worth it.
If you are entering into the Honors Program and are choosing a professor for Hist365, do not take Rosano. His lectures were extremely long and vague, and it was unclear what he wanted from us. He discouraged students from discussing topics and participating by responding very negatively, even though he often called on students at random.
Get ready to buckle up, baby. Rosano is an incredibly bright guy, and he expects the same in the papers. Class was almost three hours long once a week. Lectures are tough. Papers are tough as hell. You have to work for the A. But the knowledge received is priceless. Rosano changed my life. If you're interested in political philosophy, take it.
He honestly expects you to read 6 books during the semester that are all barely comprehensible. There's no time for it if you have other classes but you really do need the books for the papers. Everyone was very unsure what he wanted out of the papers and the comments he writes on them are simply unreadable. Scribbles senselessly on the board.
Dr. R is tough. But is incredible. No one has opened up my mind more to political science than him, and I'll forever remember the priceless knowledge he's given me. He's also funny. If you're of the faint-hearted, take a step out and let someone else get in line. If you're ready for the philosophical ride of your life, fasten your seatbelts, baby.
He can be a little scary at first but once the class gets settled, hes a very likable guy. This course is a tough no matter which professor, but Rosano will prepare you. im taking another course with him next semester because hes the best. Get ready to read and analyze. There are 4 papers and thats it. He let us rewrite 2 but do not count on it
Doesn't post grades or respond to emails. Lectures are interesting but he dances around points that could be summarized in 10 min instead of 75. He gets off on being the smartest person in the room. BRING YOUR BOOK OR HE WILL HAPPILY ROAST YOU. Also, watch "The Sporanos" to get his references which you actually need in order to follow his lectures.
I'm not invoking a cliche when I say that Prof. Rosano changed my life. If you demonstrate an effort to understand these difficult texts, he'll go out of his way to get you there. What you get out of his courses is the capacity to teach yourself. Worth every penny and every second. If you have any interest philosophy, get into his class
Okay, here's the thing. He's a nice guy and gets you really thinking. BUT... you read EVERY book on his syllabus, and he talks in rhetorical questions. His eyes and ears are bad, so be ready to repeat yourself a few times and him to say that you're right for an answer but you're wrong. Don't worry, he always says the answer anyway.
He is very difficult, I can't lie. I worked really hard, went to his office hours, and still got an A-. However, he is one of the most inspiring and enthusiastic professors I've ever had. He will make you work for it, but it is 'a worthy difficulty'. ;'D Wish the grade was over more than a few papers, but I love his class and am taking him next yr.
This class is hard. It's going to be because it is part of the honors class but you aren't going to expect this level of difficulty. He spends the entire time period talking but he will call on you randomly for input and won't let you just not answer. READ THE BOOKS. Grade based on your improvement. Papers are you write on a problem in the trial.
Easily the best professor at U M Dearborn. He genuinely cares about his students and pushes them to succeed. His grading is hard, but after the first paper if you put in the effort you will reap the rewards. Would take again! (And again)
Prof. Rosano has a unique approach to his class, which is very in-depth and analyzes a few core works instead of briefly looking at many. If you love thinking about big, philosophical ideas, you'll love his class. He can have very specific standards on his papers, but meet with him while drafting for feedback and you'll do just fine.
This was the most difficult class I've ever taken, but the most rewarding. Dr. Rosano gives you the effort you put in, but more. Do not miss a class if you can, his lectures are insightful and will help guide your papers. He grades fairly but harshly. He will help you think and write for yourself. He is a gem of the political science department.
Professor Rosano is my favorite professor at this school. His lectures are amazing, and he genuinely loves what he does. I have had him for several classes, but my favorite was American Political Thought.
He expects you to write like a ancient philosopher and hates fillers in paper. Short papers but do not drag on point make your point and move on. He doesn't like qeustions during the class he will call you out if you are not paying attention. He is hard to understand he talks like societies
So I took this class because I needed an upper-level writing for my gen ed. The class is hard, but not too bad if you've taken an AP English class. You must be good at writing to get a good grade. I got a B+, A-, and an A on each of the three papers and still got an A in the class. He is a nice person and keeps the class interesting.
Awesome professor. Teaches well and spends time with you to discuss your work and progress.
By far the most difficult instructor I've ever had, yet he truly cares about his students. He puts the time in to help you out if you need it. The Four Trials class with him is brutal, but manageable if you put the time in. He's funny, caring, and kind, but grades harshly on papers. Don't write a book report; the papers are all analysis.
Professor Rosano generously rewards students who improve throughout the semester. He's passionate about the subject and is very willing to help you if you struggle with the papers. You may start off not doing so good in the class, but once you get the hang of how to do the papers and show what you learned in the last paper he will reward you.
This class is very difficult. If you do not want to put in the work do not take it! Pretty simple! Very reading intensive. Be prepared to be called out and called on as well. Dr. Rosano has been my favorite professor since starting college in 2010. Truly caring and believes in the educational process not the indoctrination of ideal!
Professor Rosano is ridiculously smart and knows what he's doing. The class was extremely difficult, but probably one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. If you are not passionate about the material, you may find the class grueling, but I thought it was 100% worth taking. He is very accessible and gives great feedback, would take again.
Professor Rosano is a really good guy. You won't like him at first and it will seem impossible. If he sees that you care about the class, he will care just as much.
Professor Rosano is very smart and passionate about the readings, no doubt. However, he is a very hard grader and his feedback is very hard to read and understand. Talking to him during office hours is not much help because he merely repeats his directions that he gave the whole class. He also calls on people during every lecture multiple times.
Professor Rosano is a super honest professor with very clear expectations. Simply put, you will get an A if he sees your growth. He has no specific criteria, so lots of students complain as he is very misunderstood. His criteria is based only on whether you finish the class with way better knowledge and skills than you started with.
Very few assignments (somewhat daunting) but grades you well if you show that you're thinking hard and you show that you're improving over the course of the term.
Professor Rosano is a great person, but not the best professor for me. 4 essays were worth 80% of the grade while the remaining 20% was participation. For the essays, he has a VERY specific form of writing he is looking for. So, if structure is good for you definitely take this class. If you like flexibility, I would avoid his course.
One of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures help GUIDE you through the material, however make sure to read it for yourself otherwise you're lost! Grading is just four papers on each text and 20% participation, however as long as you show improvement from the start and the ability to comprehend these difficult texts you'll be fine.
AMAZING professor, one of the best I've ever had. 301 was definitely a lot different than 300 due to the texts involved, however once we got to the Republic I felt more confident with the material. Only three papers with 25% participation this time, so make sure to work hard, read, participate, and show improvement throughout your papers!
Class grade is mostly essay based. Make sure to read before the class and share thoughts (even if you think it's wrong). When writing the essays, I highly recommend going to the writing lab to a honors program tutor. His essays are not terribly difficult when you take your time and get used to his writing style. Pay attention in lecture!
This professor is seriously the best. I took him for multiple courses. He helped me transfer to U of M Ann Arbor, and even recommended me for law school. Now that I am in law school, I attribute a lot of my success to him! He really prepares you for graduate school. If you care, he will care 10x more!
Love Mr. Rosano, his lectures are engaging but sometimes can be boring especially if you have him for a 3 hour lecture time. He makes the class fun with some of his analogies, and he answers his own questions we don't really talk in class. It's more of an analysis and reasoning's class rather than a based on your opinion class (hit or miss).
This class is NOT an easy A, but you will become a better thinker & writer. Rosano grades your four essays with increasing difficulty and expects you to improve. He doesn't have a specific rubric, but he leaves valuable feedback. His lectures are sometimes hard to understand, but you will gain understanding, skills, and a lengthened attention span.
