this professor was tough but easy to talk to and he was always glad to help.
great teacher, well informed

This guy is *awesome*. He really explains stuff very clearly and helps everyone understand. He relates things to everday life. Attedance is a MUST, though.
Great teacher. Very helpful and clear.
If you have half a brain and even a pinky's worth of work ethic, you can pass Exploring Life. Dr. Rutledge really does care whether or not his students are doing well, and will greatly help you out, should you need assistance with the material. If you are bad with Biology, go to class and listen, and you will undoubtedly pass with flying colors.
Dr. Rutledge is an amazing biology teacher. Science is not one of my fortes but he does an amazing job of making it interesting and relating it to my life. it is easy to follow his notes and his lecture. He always has powerpoints with the notes on them and he has all the notes online for you to print and bring to class.
You have to go to class to make a good grade in here. He will give random in class group projects and they will count all together as an exam grade. He explains everything well and I was able to do well on test just by going to class, paying attention, and taking notes. You can't talk or text or you will get yelled at! :)
open your mind to what he has to say. he encourages you not to be ignorant. he is a very smart man and you will gain a lot from being in his class.. DONT BE LATE. ever.
I LOVED this man. he is passionate about Bio. Go to class and listen then do a little reviewing before tests and you should be good. He does not take attendance in a large class, but go because all the in class stuff is counted as one of 5 exam grades (including lab) If you are a hardcore Christian, i suggest not taking him. he Will offend you. =)
There are 4 tests you have to take and then a 5th that is comprised of your in-class activities so be sure to never miss a class! The tests are really hard but he gives you study guides and sample questions but you have to know more than definitions.
If you're a good student, you'll love his class, if you aren't expect to be the butt of his jokes or be willing to leave. I couldn't have asked for a better biology teacher. I had great teachers so far,but he was my favorite by far. He really cares. He will also pull out students to commend their high test grades, which i thought was a nice touch.
Extremely intelligent professor, he literally wrote the book, so be prepared to really study it. If you show up to class, pay attention, and study hard for tests you should do well. Do not take if you're looking for an easy A, HE WILL MAKE YOU EARN IT.
AMAZING prof. one of the hardest classes i've ever taken, but i learned more from him than any other professor. makes you earn your grade-but thats how it should be. show up, participate, and he'll work with you. just show you care! he's really an inspiration to my future teaching career!
Honestly the hardest teacher you could take for this course. Also incredibly rude, and will yell at you in class for asking a question. If you feel like studying for a week and getting tutored only to make a 62, then take him. If you want a good grade, run in the opposite direction. Don't do it. You'll regret it. And I am very good in biology.
I started out the semester hating him and this class, and ended it absolutely loving it. He'll make you work hard to get a good grade, but if you pay attention and review your notes, you'll be okay. If you go to class every day, your in-class activity points will bring up your grade a good amount. Definitely recommend this guy!
Rutledge is an amazing professor. I HATED biology before i took this class. He literally knows everything about biology that there is to know. He does not take attendance but it really is necessary if you want to do well. Biology is already a hard subject. But he is the best professor i had this semester.
Rutledge is a super nice guy. His tests are really hard and he switches the questions up a lot from the review so pay attention to that. But if you go to class and listen to the lectures it isn't that bad and if you miss class with an excuse he is more than willing to help you with the makeup work/quizzes.
GOOD professor. comes of a little strong and arrogant at times but this is because he wants to challenge you. He is helpful when needed. attendance suggested due to inclass worksheet that are really easy. All his lectures are online and easy to follow. YOU WILL EARN YOUR GRADE. if you study his power points you will easily make a B in this class.
If you go to class, pay attention, bring your lecture book you will be fine. this was one of my easiest classes this semester. he can be very sarcastic but other than that he is a great teacher.
You only have tests so to do well on all of them is a must. He will tell you that test 2 and 3 are the hardest and 1 and 4 are easier test. And you MUST buy the lecture manual; he gathers those papers at the end of almost of every class and in the end it counts as an activity grade which will add to another test grade. I ended up with a B.
Professor Rutledge (Michael) is a great. You need to really dedicate time to studying for his class, and you NEED to show up everyday. I couldn't push the 'mandatory' button hard enough. If you skip class you are bound to fail a test. If you dedicate time for 1030 Biology you will be just fine. He also wears interesting sweaters.
Rutledge was a great professor. Slightly arrogant but I found it funny. Attendance isn't mandatory but you really need to show up... you will not do good on tests if you aren't there for notes. He has his powerpoints online which is really helpful & gives you study guides before each test. DONT BE LATE TO CLASS. He will get pissed at you.
This has probably been the worst experience I have experienced in a class. His test are very hard, and he isn't very helpful. Several times I've asked for help, and I've always received a sarcastic and rude answer.
What a great university experience his class is. Don't take him if you are slacker though.
I LOVE Dr. Rutledge! I'm not a Biology major so of course i had to pay attention, show up to class every day, and study for his tests but this is college and I kind of expect that. To me he's hilarious and very sassy but I like that. He wears the same pants everyday. I just think that should be mentioned.
Rutledge is a great professor and I would probably take him again if it was between him and someone else. He's hilarious and extremely sarcastic. He gives you all the notes on D2l. He gives 4 tests that are pretty challenging but if you study your notes and truly understand the topic, then you'll do just fine. You HAVE to have your textbook.
He's not much of any help.
If you don't pass his class it's because you didn't show up and/or study. He is easy to follow and understand. He will also answer any additional questions you may have on the spot and replies to emails in a timely fashion.
I'm currently in this class and it is terrible. I'm stressed, he doesn't help a lot nor does he teach. The class average does not reach over 70. And I'm a good studier.
Let me begin by saying I am currently taking the course, so I haven't even gotten my grade for him yet. I don't approach him about much simply because I don't need to. He does teach you biology, yes.. but mostly, he teaches you HOW to learn. He isn't easy, but his teaching style is DEFINITELY worth it. I would take him over in a heartbeat.
I didn't like him too much, but he grew on me by the and ended up being one of my favorite professors! He's incredibly sweet, very approachable, and really cares and tries to help you get the best grade possible. Hes also very intelligent & passionate about his subject! Grade 4 tests, & a free 100 on a 5th test grade for attendance.
Please do not take him. I regret taking him. He stops in the middle of class if someone walks in late and stares at them (angrily) until they find a seat. His test are near impossible to receive an A. He is rude, and arrogant. If you can, take another BIO 2 professor! The material he teaches differs from the book at times (confusing).
Honestly the worst professor at the university. I go to every class, read every chapter, and study. It does not matter because his tests are filled with trick questions. Furthermore, he has a bad attitude towards his students. I wish I had never taken him because I did not get anything out of the class that I could not teach myself.
I think I could've gotten a better grade if I made this class my priority, which I didn't. All he does is do lecture notes and the only grades were the tests, but he does drop one test grade. I do better with practicals so lab helped save my ass. He was rude in his replies and remarks in class, but was pretty approachable outside of class.
I liked him a lot. You have to study in his course, which I did. If you are not committed to being a solid biology student, you probably won't do well, but if you are serious, he's your man.
He has a unique personality and makes the class interesting.
Straight-forward, not a lot required. Reading ahead is helpful and lectures focus on test material. Homework is minimal and isn't graded, but it also focuses on test material. My class had five tests and no other projects. He made lectures entertaining. Just respect his classroom and keep your cell phones in your pocket.
Over all a good professor however your grade in his class is mostly based off the test he gives you and lab. If you are not a good test taker you might want to keeep your lab grade good because HE DOESNT GIVE HOMEWORK AT ALL. You really have to study for his test because it is a lot of stuff. He does give study guides which is a blessing. Be ready
Dr. Rutledge is a super cool guy, but his 1120 class is ridiculous. He is so general in class, and then asks the most off the wall questions that literally NO ONE knows. He is always saying we "might need to know this for jeopardy one day." He is really nice, and his lectures are easy to sit in, but his tests are horrible.
Rutledge is cool, but super sassy. Have your cellphone out? Expect to be called out in front of everyone. His class is HARDER than my major classes. This is a gen ed, and I have to study harder than most of my classes. You only have 5 test, 1 gets dropped. Lab is saving my life right now. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR, I heard grinath does test correction
I took him for general biology, he is a straight forward guy. People don't like him too much because he is old school professor and lecture style with just test. I took him again for life science for elementary teachers and loved it! Very inspirational and honest. His test were hard, definitely need to study, but I learned a lot.
He has a passion for what he does and is very knowledgeable. If you don't come to class you won't do well on the tests, but if you show up you're golden. The only grades are tests (5 total but the lowest is dropped). There is no final, just test 5 taken during finals week. Great class if you like science. Overall wonderful professor. Loves plants.
Mikey was an interesting fellow. He is quite quirky and made class interesting because of his enthusiasm. He is somewhat passive aggressive but overall, I enjoyed the class. YOU MUST STUDY. Coming to class is a MAJOR grade booster. Ask him about the importance of plants.. He will love you and be happy to explain. They are magical creatures
Easy A-- you should be ashamed if you can't pass Dr. Mike's class. Very good teacher-- he goes over concepts multiple times and has a talent for helping you understand and remember. 5 exams, one dropped, weighted equally (final one optional). Sassy guy and engaging lecturer. Never used the textbook I bought, but he had us read from an online one.
You have five tests and one is dropped. The textbooks are FREE online. His lectures are moderately boring. He does not take attendance, but you should go to class for specific test topics. He makes personal connection between subject matter and personal life (it's cool). He is approachable, but does not seem to really care about the students.
5 tests, one gets dropped. He does not take attendance, but I have been to every single class and I am still barely passing.
Dr. Rutledge is a cool guy and his passion for Bio really shows through. His teaching style seems a bit bland however. His lectures consist of PowerPoint slides with blanks missing that you have to fill in class. You can't access these slides after class. He's kind of rude, and his tests are incredibly hard. You can never study enough for them.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll learn so very much!
He is knowledgeable when it comes to teaching biology. However, his teaching style isn't the best. He moves very quickly with his slides, so make sure you're paying attention. His tests are a pretty big deal, so make sure you're studying way ahead of time.
His tests were difficult at first but I managed to survive his class and the lab
His passion for the content really shows through; traditional teaching style; learned a lot.
Great professor. Not easy, but you learn a lot. Definitely prepared me for my other classes.
I am not a fan of Biology, but Dr. Rutledge is easy to understand. He does a optional zoom class everyday for questions and tutoring. His tests are pretty hard and weigh 50% of your grade so make sure to study. I really enjoyed this class, and would recommend taking him for this class.
Dr. Rutledge is very funny but lecture heavy. You have to study a lot and your grade is just made up of 5 exams. You will have to study for your grade. With online classes he had optional zoom meetings and his slides are easy to learn from. I recommend taking him.
Online class was very organized and easy to follow. Class was very assignment heavy, but were not hard. Mr. Rutledge responded to emails and was very helpful.
Lots of small, easy assignments everyday. Class is really easy to follow online format and he has zoom calls you can pop into for help every class meeting. But you never have to get on zoom if you dont want. Really accessible for help, study the knowledge checks well for the tests and youll be fine!
Professor Rutledge offers optional zoom meetings every class day which was useful. He also prepares video lectures that go along with every lesson which include detailed information. Overall, Professor Rutledge is a great professor who strives for his students success. If you do your work this class will be easy for you.
It's listed as a zoom class, but you aren't required to join. It's at your own pace within limits. He gives you all the materials - lecture videos, ppts, online textbook, etc. I loved the class, and he was a very easygoing and understanding professor. If you have to take BIO 3000, absolutely go with his course.
Speaking as an early childhood education major, this class should not be a requirement. It's literally just a biology course, which is already a requirement for the major. With math pedagogy classes, you learn the theory and purposes for teaching content. This is just straight-up content. The assignments are menial and put together with no effort.
Dr. Rutledge is very knowledgeable about biology and science. His assignments help you locate curricula and activities to use in the elementary classroom. I learned lots.
Dr. Rutledge's class is well-organized and straight-forward. Just pay attention to the assignments and his knowledge checks long the way.
Great class for teachers--he helps you locate materials that you can use in your own classroom.
He is knowledgeable and inspiring. He is fair and encouraging.
This class is so unnecessary for early childhood educators, and Dr. Rutledge does not work with you at all. He does not want to help you succeed.
He is very passionate about biology and that shows in his teaching.
Based on 6 exams only. No extra credit. Powerpoint slides are all over 200 slides. Very material heavy and would not recommend, he just reads off all the slides and expects the concept to stick.
All he does is reads the powerpoints and then puts it into his own words, we only have tests and no extra credit. He does not respond to his emails. He does not make this class interesting, and his class is not set up to help students pass. If you care about your GPA do not take his class!
You have a test every two weeks over 200+ PowerPoint slides that he just reads during class. Each slide is packed full of material and the only grades in his class is 6 tests. I have never struggled in school and I don't think I will be able to pass his class.
Please do not take him, yes science is meant to be hard but I have had harder professors but they were amazing teachers. He just reads over 200+ powerpoints and the whole class grade is made up of 6 exams only.
i'm in his bio class for non majors only for a gen ed as an intro course. I'm definitely not a bio major but every time I enter his classroom I feel like a biologist (derogatory) just based on how much i've been studying. its 4 tests combined with your lab grade, go to lectures or you will fail. study absolutely everything tbh take someone easier
If you want to fail this class and question yourself worth
I am a special education major and had to take this class to fulfill my gen ed requirements. The professor lectures as though everyone in the class should already know the material, so it is very confusing and hard to keep up with. Your grade is based on 4 tests, and there is no extra credit, only a curve based on the highest test score.
he's nice. that's it. i did everything to try and do better on the test, i knew the material already from highschool. he makes me question if im filling out the scantron wrong. how tf am i still getting bad grades? he doesn't give any feedback on what we missed on the tests or how to do better.
Too advanced to be a non-major bio class. All he does is read PowerPoints you already have access to and doesn't elaborate much further. You're only graded on 4 tests, no extra credit opportunities. The study guides are just short lists of topics, no practice questions to help you prepare. Coming from a straight A student, he will ruin your GPA.
If you want to fail take his class. This is a class meant for non majors but he doesn't teach like it is.
Do not take him if having a perfect GPA is important to you.
Dr. Rutledge is a really cool guy and I really do enjoy his lectures. I feel like I could learn a lot from him if he would slow down. There are 6 tests, prepare to sell your soul studying for them cuz they each cover 200+ slides of content. It is entirely memorization. If you are worried about your grade, take someone else.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! You only have four tests that account for 75% of your grade. The tests are long and challenging, and the PowerPoint presentation he provides is useless. The other 25% is based on lab, which is easy but boring.
This prof doesn't care about his student success. He reads 200+ slides power point and expects you to remember everything and then will test on things he didn't mention at all or only mentioned in passing
dont take him unless you hate yourself that's all.
Just don't. Save yourself. Exams are hard, no extra credit and he is just not a good professor overall
he doesnt care about his students at all and at times it feels like he wants us to fail
Do not take this man's class unless you want your GPA to go down the drain, and you hate yourself. You only get graded on 4 tests, which are 75% of your grade. Your lab grade is the other 25%. he never gives feedback on tests. He reads straight off his slides and way too fast, and the info in the test is often things he mentioned in passing.
I'm going to snip off his stupid little ponytail if I ever see him again.
i literally stop showing up to class because he is awful. i havent been in that lecture for 3 weeks.
Truly this class was easier to fail, and it was to pass, and that should say everything
Save your sanity and your GPA. Test reviews are useless because you aren't tested on half of what's on it, and are tested on stuff that wasn't on it. Doesn't give extra credit and will make you feel like all of the problems with the planet are all your fault. Just don't do it!
worst bio class Ive ever taken. All the material I had previously learned in high school. I will be honest, the first test I did not study for and got a high D. The final, I studied sm and got an F. It's impossible to do anything to try and do better in his class.might as well just guess atp. He is the SCROOGE of biology.i hope his break sucks.
If you're a biology major and already know all the content of this class, you'll pass. If this information is new to you, I suggest finding someone else. In my experience, it didn't matter whether or not I went to class because the class is basically self taught. Overall, he's a nice guy, kinda. He just can't teach. :/
Is he a good lecturer? No. Are the exams impossible? No. I don't think he was that bad but I can understand for non-bio majors why he could be tough. He is a old school, no BS type of professor and his class is that. The content really isn't that difficult to understand and the class is crammable if you're good at studying. If not, study ahead.
Take another science or take another professor. His class is not designed for non majors. Your grade is based on 4 hard exams, and the lab is the only cushion.
