very passionate about his work, kinda hard cuz he's very deep in his explanations.
Tests are challenging but, very clear with such a deep subject, tests are from book and lecture. Got an A
ver hard teacher. if you want to learn take him. a lot of reading, test are very hard.
This man is out there! Never stays on topic and is very hard to follow. He should have been a philosophy major instead of a psychology major!
this guy is a nut for his work, no spoon-feeding/handholding in his cognitive psych class, best class ever almost as good as philosophy of language.
Dr. Ryan is a great professor. His tests are very tricky, but not too bad. Make sure you go to class and read the chapters for each test. Gives bonus during a pre-test. :)
I attended every class, read the book, and made an A. The lectures were interesting even though they didn't seem to help me for the test. He is a pretty entertaining character. I would take him again.
very hard material makes for a long, hard and boring class. a good prof b/c he knows what he's doing, but tests can be confusing.
This professor penalized you if you missed class even though had good reasons with proof. He doesn't like to help and his lectures always go on to something else. Doesn't stay on the topic on what he was teaching. So therefore very hard to follow. I wouldn't take him again. Tests are tricky.
At first, I thought he was confusing, but upon reading the chapters prior to class and applying lectures to the readings, the class became MUCH easier. He is a little quirky, but overall a good prof. Seems to go off topic, but info really does relate to subject matter.
Ryan knows his stuff and he tries his best to get you to do the same. Work hard cuz it is tough. his tests are very applied, be ready for that. great guy
Dr. Ryan is very educated, however, I did not understand his lectures and just reading the book won't get you through. This is a difficult class. Study study study!!!
Ryan is an GREAT teacher! This class isn't easy, u have to read & attend; if u do this u will pass. Everyone gives Ryan a hard time, but u should have seen the attendance, classes would be empty & tests would be completely full, this is the head of the psych department people, dont expect a bird class. Im taking another of his classes nxt semester!
awesome/brilliant professor! makes concepts relevant to real life. although it seems like lectures are unrelated to the concepts being taught, go to class and listen well. his teaching style is unique, but amazingingly effective. i think he induces understanding in his presentation of material; i'd go out of my way to take a another class with him
Although he knows his stuff. He has a tendency to not lecture about the topics posted on his focus questions at the beginning of class, and he shows too many pointless experiments that mean realitivly nothing to most of the class. TESTS ARE THE HARDEST I HAVE EVER TAKEN, and they don't get easier to understand as the semester goes on.
Nice guy but lectures are hard to follow and tests make no sense. Good thing is all the extra credit though. Somehow I made an A even though I had no clue what he was talking about=thank you extra credit!
don't let the bad rap scare you off; dr ryan is very smart, and the class is challenging, but you have to actually pay attention to the lectures, think about how they answer the focus questions, & read the book; the experiments are relevant; they illustrate the concepts being taught; take this class, you'll learn alot if you put forth the effort
Boisterous and energetic, was funny at times. Interesting character. You MUST read the chapters before coming to class, and make time outside class to take personal notes from the text. There's no homework, but you must study and review the focus questions he provides. The tests are very difficult.
Took Dr. Ryan for Cognition and Psychology of Thought and he is a great professor. He is definitely energetic and shows a true passion for the subjects he teaches. His tests are not too difficult if you attend class and read the book. I would recommend him and would take him again if he had other classes.
I was really interested in this subject before taking the class and learned absolutely NOTHING from this man. He drones on in class about things that don't relate to the material and his lectures are painful to sit through. He's a nice guy and can be helpful. I hardly went to class and just read the book on my own and got an A.
He does teach you a lot in his lectures, just not about the subject. He sounds boring, but he has a fun quality to him. I recomend him because he is better than the other jack@$$*$ out there. He's funny and is helpful in anything, if you ask for it.
I liked him.You really have to study and answer the focus questions but he was a great guy.I would definitely take another class from him. It seems as if what he says in class has no relevance but then during the tests his lectures make sense and if you paid attention you will do well. He loves his job and that makes him a good teacher.
HARD! The material seems to be easy if you pay attention, go to class, and answer the questions but this class/teacher is hard. The questions are difficult on the test and there are only 22-24 questions on the test, so you can't miss many. There are extra credit points at the end of each test....doesn't really help much.
A wonder professor! Dr. Ryan is very intelligent and it really comes out during his lectures. It's great being able to be taught by a professor who got his Ph.D. from Stanford (rated highest school for psychology).
not bad, gets really excited with his subject, no lecture notes online, no webct, will not give you notes if you miss class. 5 tests, if you miss one for a good reason he drops the missed one. tests are challenging. he teaches you HOW to think through questions and doesn't just give you the answuers. take him if you want to work!
This guy is a really good teacher. Sometimes in his lectures you feel like you are not learning anything, but listen anyway because when you get the test you will know all these concepts and things that you did not know that you knew. I still remember most everything I learned in his class.
You will learn more than you ever thought in his class. He lectures about topics in a mannor that seems abstract but he does connect the dots. He gives daily and chapter focus questions which help alot. Do the work and attend class and you will learn so much.
Dr.Ryan is the ONLY professor I've had that challenges his students... refreshing. If you attend class and read the book, his tests are reasonable, but you have to think.
great teacher. teaching technique is unique. Its hard to catch on at first, but eventually you catch on and understand what he is trying to say very helpful and nice to talk to outside of class. Hard class, and he does challenge is students, but its a nice change. Definately reccomend
Yeah...he's not a very good professor. I came into this class expecting to enjoy the subject but in the end, I really did not learn anything from his class. His test were INCREDIBLY HARD. No matter how much you went to class, took notes, or read the book, he was extremely unclear and "tricky" in his test questions. I would not recommend him.
Psyc of Thought: Ryan is brilliant and interesting. I was never bored. The information is complex, careful reading + note-taking is required. This course really helped me improve my study habits. There are 5 tests, and every test has a few bonus Qs which help boost your grade. Challenging but definitely worth while!
Dr. Ryan is a very good lecturer -- one of the top three I've had so far -- but it's the *material* that makes this class worth it. You learn about learning, about naive theories of learning, and about methods and techniques that should actually result in a dramatic improvement in your overall gpa by improving your skills as a student. Take it!
I took him for health & psychology. His class is pretty easy as long as you go to class and take notes because half of his test was over the lecture. He also gives study guides for every test which is very helpful. Overall he is a great professor.
5 tests; highest weighted 25%, lowest only 15%, all others 20%. do the reviews provided and it's an easy A. lectures are good, designed to abstract material to real life situations and practical applications. only homework is reading the book for tests.
VERY HARD! This class ruined mine and everyone else's GPA's. You can read the entire book and it will not matter. Tests are based 1/2 on his lectures. Each lecture applies to 3 test questions. Lectures are BORING! Students either left or fell asleep. Tests are very hard and they are the only grades given. Tests are very tricky. DOESN'T curve.
Dr. Ryan is great! Attendance is mandatory because half the exam is based on the lectures and the other half is based on chapter questions he provides. So complete the chapter questions and take good notes, and you will get A's on the exams and a final course grade of an A.
HARD HARD!! Lectures are SOMETIMES interesting..but starts rambling about other things. His tests are extremely difficult and tricky! Nice guy..don't i don't recommend.
I took a class with him back in 07' and it was BORING....VERY BORING, fell asleep most if the time, he is not clear in his lectures and the tests are hard, no matter how much you study. Maybe I shouldn't have went to class everyday then I would have got a better grade. If you want a good nap then take a class with him.
Dr. Ryan is the best! Yeah, his class may be hard, but its just because he wants his students to start thinking like psych majors! I definitely recommend him for anyone interesting in learning! If you find it to hard, then you should probably reconsider your major, because this class is what psychology is all about! Thinking in an abstract manner!
Interesting lectures...difficult words...tricky tests.. no papers...nice guy..the book helps.
Short little man but cute! He is really nice and keeps you interested during lectures. READING is a must!!! First test was hard but I got the hang of it. Joined SI and upped my grade alot.
Extremely boring, lectures have little to do with the book. However, reading is a must to do well on test. The test are tricky, he purposly makes answers extremely similar (right answer seems to be completle subjective of the test maker). Dont take this guy, he's interesting but not as a professor.
Very indirect lectures....you must take very good notes to figure out what hes trying to say. Hard and tricky exams. Class attendance and extreme studying is a must to pass exams!
The material super interesting. i hope to attend grad skool for health psychology. BUT DR RYAN is luducris but funny. Indirect, unclear lectures, must go in order to do FAIR on the test. tests 1/2 book, 1/2 lecture. read every word in the book, didnt miss class. ill b lucky to finish with a B. Tests ridiculously,& unnecessarily hard! FRUSTRATING!
Extremely interesting class accompanied by extremely boring lectures. Almost impossible to take good notes in his class. The tests are tricky and subjective, class is mandatory. couldnt pay me to take this guy again. Read book and try to answer test questions as he would is my best advice.
Really really really boring class. He is a nice guy and occasioanlly funny but the class is awful but you have to go because his tests are heavily lecture based.
Health PSY. Dr. Ryan is enthusiastic about his teaching and still rather boring. His tests are half lecture-based. READ the text. He is reallllyy big on journal studies! you don't have to read them, but you will get hours of lecture on design and such...leftover Experimental Psy stuff...Not a difficult class, just a tedious one. DO THE STUDYGUIDE.
Very intelligent prof. tests are 1/2 from book and 1/2 from lectures; lectures are very informative and interesting but you MUST take good, in-depth notes. good notes + doing the study guide for the text=A. his classes only have tests--no participation/hw/essays
OMG this prof is the worst ever. Boring, thinks he is funny, but not. Hard, confusing and acts as if his class should be your world. The most miserable time I have EVER had at UTSA
He is a great professor and loves teaching cognitive psych. Love this guy he really knows the subject but the class is a bit hard. Make sure to go to class and do the study guide really helpful.
Dr. Ryan definately made this class a lot easier than i thought it was going to be. He is really funny and kind of quirky. His tests were pretty easy, they come straight from his lecture and the reviews he gives you. Definately a professor i would recommend
Love this professor! He loves his subject and teaching! He is not monotone at all and is very respectful and well mannered. Read the chapters and do the topic questions and you will be fine! He is also one of my favorite professors!
Great Professor. Hard subject but if you read and go to every class you will make an A. Focus questions are a must and so is SI sessions.
MUST ATTEND CLASS! and take really good notes and read all chapters assigned to get at least a B. class isnt easy but its possible if you just put in effort.
Class is very mundane. Speaks in complicated phrases/words so his lectures are hard to follow. Exams seem daunting but aren't as hard as they seem. If you read chapters and answer focus questions, it's not hard to get a B. It's hard to attend class cause it's so boring, but overall, it's not the end of the world if you take this class.
Great professor. Must Must Must go to class, or don't complain when you get a low grade. His lectures don't just repeat the book, but add on to it. So going to class shouldn't be boring, if you've done the reading- otherwise you will be confused.
The class is pretty easy as long as you go to class and read the book. In class he discusses experiments that build on the reading. Do not expect him to teach the book.
Rambles through lectures. Take detailed notes and attend class. Tests are hard.
Go to class, read the book, and you'll get an A. Plain and simple. Exams are really easy if you read the text (which, by the way, is an easy read). He does tend to ramble in class some, but he is very passionate about what he is doing, and a lot of what is says is extremely helpful.
This professor is HARD. I have a B in the class and that is because I read EVERY word of EACH chapter, makes note cards, take ADDITIONAL NOTES on the chapters, and attend (most) SI sessions. This is not an easy class and his lectures are ridiculously boring. His exams are confusing and tricky, REALLY have to read what he is looking for. Good Luck.
Hardly ever lectures on topic. Tests are nothing like what you're told to study for. No way I can reccomend him for anything.
His lectures are very boring, he's a nice professor but he tends to go off topic a lot. You must attend the lectures and do the focus questions, otherwise you will NOT do well in his class. I can honestly say i wouldn't recommend him to anyone, his class was pretty boring and difficult.
Very difficult tests. They are purposefully done in a way to make you think and think hard. I usually don't have to read the book to pass the class, but this one I had to read every single word. I hated the lectures because he was always off topic so I stopped attending and only showed up for tests. Still did ok, but I hated this class.
Took him for cognition. His lectures are very boring and off topic a lot, although they can be very helpful regarding info you need to know for the test. Book is definitely needed. Make sure to review and study the focus questions. Grade consists of 4 tests and 1 final. They are hard but if you read the book and answer the focus q's you'll be fine.
DIFFICULT CLASS! The only grades are 5 test grades which are extremely hard. Tests are purposely made hard to make you think critically & all answers sound the same with one word differences or are rewritten in a different way. You will have to read EVERY word in the chapter & read it TWICE. Lectures are ridiculously boring. Nice guy but RUN!
To some people his lectures may sound boring or dull, but he is a fantastic professor. He makes you think and work hard. You HAVE to read and ATTEND every lecture. His tests are 12 questions from the book and 12 questions from the lecture. If you are majoring in psychology and you don't enjoy his lectures then you should switch to another major.
5 exams you must both attend lecture and read the book to have half of a clue on test material. His lectures are relevant for clarity but only in an abstract way most of the time. If you want a challenge of your cognitive abilities and like to spend copious amounts of time studying for a class, this is the one for you.
Many, many students complain about his exams being difficult and hard to understand. Yes it can be, I think if you pay attention to the lectures, follow along with the book in class, read, and learn to think critically about the material you will be fine. Key is to understand the terms and concepts. He is very nice and will help. Just ask!
Get ready to read your butt off. If you like to be challenged this is the class to take. If you're lazy and want an easy grade, THIS IS NOT THE CLASS TO TAKE!
Professor Ryan is a sweet old man who really knows his stuff but also expects you to know your stuff. Reading before class is a must if you want to understand what he's talking about in his lectures which are really boring. Exams are super hard but if you have to understand not just memorize the material you will be fine.
The man is brilliant. He knows his stuff and if you don't read BEFORE class he won't make sense. If you read, take notes , and do the focus questions you can get an A. If you half ass read and don't go to class you will not pass. The exams are hard because there are more than 1 correct answer. If you don't know the material it's overwhelming.
His tests have nothing to do with anything you hear in lecture or read in the book. It takes longer to understand the test question than it does to pick out the answer. He loves that he tests are challenging and says it's because he wants you to learn to think and not memorize. 60% failed the 1st&2nd tests. DO NOT TAKE, even online is better
Dr Ryan is such a nice man and really loves this subject. However, his test are incredibly tough. No matter how hard I studied, I never got the results I wanted. The lectures can be a bit confusing (he doesn't have slides/notes) because he just talks about the given daily topic.
This is a class for students who really want to learn. If you want to learn a little bit and make and easy A, skip this one. If you're willing to put in the effort to broaden your understanding of how we think, learn and remember, this is a must-take course. Read for understanding and pay attention to the lectures and you'll be fine.
I really enjoyed Professor Ryan's class. Although the tests are multiple choice, they're not easy, but definitely passable. It is essential to read the text and take extensive notes. The lecture information is like clarification; the meat is in the textbook. I really do not recommend falling behind and definitely do not try to cram for this class.
Dr Ryan is a great professor for teaching cognition. He understands what he's talking about and knows how to explain it in many ways if you get confused. He gives quizzes before starting a new chapter, so read ahead. He grades test on a GPA scale so you only have to get a 3.5 which is about an 85 to get an A in the class.
Dr. Ryan was an excellent instructor however, if you sit in the back it will be very difficult to hear what he is saying. Sitting in the front 3 rows is necessary to understand everything he is saying. Make sure you read, attend class and study everyday to make an A.
You definitely need to attend class because he will include questions in the exam which can only be answered if you take notes from his lectures. Reading the book and KNOWING the material is necessary for the exam. If you only read the chapters once without comprehension, you will fail this class.
This guy was a very good professor -- you could tell he knew what he was talking about, and enjoyed educating his students. There are only 5 grades for this class, all of which are tests. No final. Kind of boring lectures, but they're a lot more engaging if you read the material beforehand.
Dr. Ryan is a true expert within his field. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and would recommend him to students who really care about learning the material. Certainly not the easiest class I have taken throughout my college career, but an A is obtainable if you show up for class and use the book to answer his chapter focus questions.
His tests were HARD. This is NOT an easy class and he obviously knows his material. His lectures were boring and hard to follow. on top of that, the book was hard to read. Then you'd get a test that was purposely nearly impossible to pass. however, you can pass this class. READ, GO TO CLASS. Pay attention. I would definitely not take him again.
Many are intimidated by the challenge that Dr. Ryan presents, but if you care about learning the subject, he is the best to take. His lectures are deliberate (ALWAYS RECORD HIS AGENDA POINTS) and the questions for the textbook chapters are necessary for the exams. He is an authority in the field, and can truly share valuable knowledge. Worth taking
His lectures are so so so boring omg.
I've had Dr. Ryan for both Psychology of Thought and Cognition. The format of his class is pretty clear, he has 5 tests. No final. His lectures can be a bit confusing, some are really great, and others not but read before class, do focus questions and you should do absolutely fine. You have to put in work to get an A.
Dr. Ryan is great. His lectures are a bit boring but he does his best to keep your attention. I recommend going to every class as the test are not just based on the textbook but also the lectures. It is 5 exams but it's only 2 chapters per exam and no final. If you don't like to work towards your grade this is not a class for you. Not an easy A!
Do not take this class if you have work, little time outside of school or looking for an easy class. He is boring unless you find the material interesting.
GRADER His tests were HARD. This is NOT an easy class. You can intensely study and still not understand the exam questions. The wording and content of his exams are purposely worded in an abstract nonsensical manor making it impossible to understand. You have to read the book a couple of times. I would definitely NOT take him again. Run!
Most of the comments on here are entirely unfair. Dr. Ryan is a fantastic professor. If you're a psych major and actually care about excelling in your field and being successful, you must take Dr. Ryan's courses. They aren't easy, but you shouldn't rate a class based on how easy it is. This course was substantive, interesting, and challenging.
I love professor Ryan. His classes are not easy but he knows his stuff. Do not take him if you're looking for an easy A because you for sure have to work for your grade. He is pretty straight forward on what is needed plus no final.
I think Dr. Ryan is an awesome professor. I love the way he shouts when he gets passionate about the subject matter, it's funny! He's extremely good at what he does, but get ready to work! It is not easy!
The class is based on 5 exams with no final. The grading is based on GPA scale so if you make a 68 on an exam and you make a 60 then you still receive the same grade which is a D. if you score a 59 or below on any exam you do not get credit. tests are worded tricky. Considering there aren't other professors offering the class, Good luck!
On the first day of class he said " when I first started teaching here I was told to make sure the students knew they were attending a UT school" in other words the class is extremely difficult and if you have the option to take it at another university or college do it, then transfer back to UTSA.
Definitely a hard class due to the exams, but I learned SO MUCH. Dr. Ryans lectures are interesting and very informative on the subject, but probably wont help you really understand the exams.. my method was to just read and listen and do the minimum because oddly enough I did better on the tests then, than when I studied for hours on end.
Dr. Ryan was awesome! That being said, it was a really hard class, but only because there was a lot of complex information that really made you think. There was no "busy work", just tests but he gives you a strategy for answering questions. USE it! If you're looking for an easy A, don't take this class. But if you like the subject you'll love it.
Didn't really enjoy taking this class. I found the way the material was presented to be bland. He gives long-winded explanations about a small portion of the material and seems to fly through the rest. Also, lots of exams. I stayed home and read from the book (and sometimes not at all) and received similar grades as my peers. He is a nice guy tho.
The only grades were based on tests, so prepare for that. I just skipped or worked on homework for other classes and I still got at least a 'C' on the tests. He's a sweet guy, just very plain and his lectures are dull. If this is your passion, I would recommend another professor.
Awesome Prof! I was scared to take his class because everyone around me was saying how difficult he was! I am not a pysch major and I got an A on the first two exam. The rest I got B's... only because I started slacking off. His class is not difficult. You do have to show up to class, most of his exams are based off of his lectures
You have to bust youre tail to pass this class. Im a 4.0 student, but this class was difficult for me. Only grades based on 5 tests.
Going to Dr. Ryan's lectures + reading every word of the textbook is crucial for succeeding. That being said, his class changed my life & helped me get all As in my other classes. Dr. Ryan is an extremely intelligent and sweet man. I recommend going to his office hours; he truly cares & is a wonderful professor to chat with when you get to know him
He gives out 5 exams throughout the semester which he doesnt explain very well. When he lectures he knows exactly what he is talking about and how to get his point across but then you take the test and it has 2 questions that are relevant to that. You must read every chapter multiple times in order to truly understand what is going on.
Yes it is a difficult course, but hes teaching a course on how to teach/memorize/learn, so I would say he knows a thing or two worth listening to - given youre a student. Hes a great professor and he knows what hes talking about. If youre taking this course with him he will make you work for it, but I doubt you will you forget what you learn.
