An odd duck, but he made a tough subject interesting. Don't miss this class!
i had him for film viewing- the class was cool- he was weird! But recommended
He never quits smiling!
I hated this class! He is extremely boring and hard to follow!
he smiles alot, good so far
I though that Philosophy was going to be cool maybe I was wrong.
he's a weird guy, but very intelligent; one of the best teachers I've had so far
He's too smart for the class. Nice guy though.

Talks too fast and is always smiling. An alright teacher though
It seems like you understood him until the test. Frustrating.
Nice guy, just really cheesy and insecure...rather annoying
This was my most anticipated class last semester. highlyrecommended
Hard lecture to sit through and one false move on tests and you are doomed!
Great teacher, A reason to show up for class.
Can't stand lectures and his physical appearence
No Comments
great guy, no one could have made philosphy this clear. some people just dont have the mind for it
A good teacher, just read the book, take good notes, and you'll be fine
His lectures are very boring, but he tries to make everything clear so that you understand. Make sure to read the book because you have a lot of quizzes.
Very helpful and nice guy
Very clear and to the point in his lectures. Do your readings, or you will have troubles. Lot's of quizes. Very nice guy... very dry sense of humor, ;)
Great teacher. Good students will appreciate the way he teaches and how much you can learn from him. I had three classes with him last year and learned a ton.
Clear lectures that are pretty fun to listen to most of the time. Take good notes, and you wont have to spend too much time reading. Exams are all essay q's, but you get a list of q's in advance.
with very clear lectures and a great class test set up, this is the way to go for an A. if you like philosophy and your not affraid to debate in class then you will get an A. Rydman also can help with your english paper or government paper, brillant man
Very nice man. Great sense of humor and lectures are clear and interesting. I would definately recommend.
Friendly. Always seems to be in a good mood. Tries to make lectures interesting. Weekly quizes. Exams are all essay.
Wonderful Instructor, brilliant man, just don't forget your attention span, ie: pay attention in class, you'll learn a lot
In business ethics, you only have two tests. Both are easy if you do the review. You have to attend class to receive daily assignment pts, that's the only downfall. Overall Good Professor
Joke!! the guy is a complete duface and a nerd! his class is so hard to pay attention in and he is very annoying to watch and listen to. He smiles all the time and is a complete NERD!! if you take his class you'll regret it! eveyone in my class did!!
anyone who knows anything about philosophy should realize this is not the most entertaining class. just attended class should be no problem passing.
The man is a genius. His lectures are a little hard to sit through, but if you like philosophy and you like to learn, this is the guy for you. He is really easy in the end too so if you don't like listening, just sleep. He doesnt mind.
Pretty good teacher. Nice guy. Lectures can be tedious, and monotonous, but are very informative if you can pay attention. Easy class. He'll give you extra credit opportunities if you ask him. You will pass as long as you know those study guides.
He is very layed back and nice. A good natured man who knows a lot about philosophy.
extremely boring
THIS DUDE IS STRAIT BORING, NO DOUBT.... ONE OF THOSE CLASSES YOU CANT GET STONED AND GO TO. CUZ ITS HELLA BORING
Dude this teacher is so boring! he makes no attempt to try and make film viewing fun. the class is so boring that everyone in it while he lectures plays with there phones, or listenes to there MP3 player. (you have to do something to pass the time)
Rydman is Da Man! Nice guy who knows a lot about Philosophy. I like that he is really laid back. Not much bothers Ol' Rydman.
He made the telecourse version of PL201 relatively easy. If you can handled slogging through the difficult to undertand textbook, and then go through the study guide his class is fairly easy. Gives good hints on the matching section of his test, and most multiple choice are straight off the guide!
Likes to give you his opinion on a lot of different subjects. Wants work done to his specifications. Class can be boring, but isn't that bad if you find the subject interesting.
THIS GUY LOST MY FINAL PAPER AND GAVE ME AN F UNTIL I WENT IN DURING THE SUMMER TO FIND THAT HE INDEED FOUND. WHAT AN ASS. BORING AS HELL
DEMOCRAT. Hates our president. Thinks he knows everything. Easy class though. Know the study guide and you're fine.
Ridiculously easy, that's what you probably want to know. He's very laid back and that's cool. Doesn't do much to moderate his class though - idiotic comments run amok there. But you do discuss some fascinating things from time to time and I appreciated his open and easy going attitude. Very good teacher.
This was a very interesting class and the teacher gave good review sheets to use to prepare for the test. He is particular about gramar and that our papers our well written, it is hard to get an A but it is worth the effort.
BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loves Pop quizes and study guides don't help what so ever
I thought he was kind of a pompous ass. Very knowledgeable and nice, but his method of grading sucks.... Pop quizzes suck. I like philosophy and ended up with a fairly****ty grade.
Excellent teacher. He doesn't force his own opinions on you, I actually dont even know what his opinions actually are... But he does do a good job at explaining and rationalizing all the philosophical ideas, even the completely crazy ones. Very clear, open minded and over all easy to follow. Exams were just essays... Nice!
His film viewing class is quite good. He is open minded and flexible. I was given permission to make my movie project an anime music video. He made note on films I recommended to him and more importantly, GOT BACK TO ME TO TELL ME HIS IMPRESSION OF THE FILMS I SUGGESTED. That is a mark of a GREAT teacher.
I don't hate the guy, but the class was SO BORING. He lectured the whole time and our brakes during a 3 hour class were only 10 minutes. I got a good grade in the class, but I wouldn't take this teacher again. I feel that he is very biased. I wrote my research paper based on what I know he'd agree with, and what do ya know... got an A.
Don't take him at 7:45 in the morning! He is boring and garantee you will fall asleep. He's pretty boring in general though, could conduct class better, and relate philosophy more to us, but doesn't.
Fun class, lots of helpful guides to the tests.
Very nice guy; about 6 pop quizzes; answers for mid-term and final given in lecture which you can follow from an outline he gives you, so utilize it.
Intro to film class was not very exciting. Films were ok, but we didn't get to see some of the films and genres that we should have. His coursepak is pretty lame, but his "edited" class videos are somewhat interesting. I didn't learn very much about film. We viewed a different film each week, and had an in-class assignment in place of attendance.
I had him for Philosophy my first semester at G.R.C.C. and I thought he was absolutely terrible! Everytime I would state my opinion about a topic he would tell me I was wrong because my answer wasn't close to the truth. Isn't philsophy supposed to be about people's opinions on life? How can you tell someone their personal opinions are wrong?
I feel really bad, because he seems like a really nice guy, personally, but he was really, really boring. I had this class from 2-5 in the afternoon and it was the longest three hours of the week. Absolutely droll. Others in the same section dropped out because they couldn't take it anymore, it was so dull. At least for that class, he was boring.
Clear, comfortable, an all around nice class.
I really did not like him at all! He is not very helpful when you don't understand and Doesnt explain very well. He makes the class pretty boring
In my opinion he was a great teacher. He knew what he was talking about, simply take notes and you will be prepared for the occasional quiz and the two tests. There is no homework other than one paper. For an introductory course, I feel as if I had learned more than I expected to.
a lot of people think hes boring just because of his style. if you have a certain sense of humor, he's very cute & entertaining, though. he takes the mess that is the textbook & turns it into little stories which he animatedly explains. you really have to be in class, though, because the textbook sucks & idk how he makes sense of it.
nice guy, confusing though . Talks in run on sentances. Didnt know what he was talking about and really didnt grasp anything he said but still got a B-
I will miss film viewing class. Mike Rydman is slightly eccentric but overall a cool older guy. I def recommmend this class.
This man is so O.C.D. it's not even funny. I did well in his class, but it wasn't enjoyable at all. He is incredibly smart, but his lectures were SO boring. He holds pop quizzes, has a strict seating chart, and has a very particular grading method. Philosophy should be more... fun.
Seems to be biased against the older students in his class. Any credit he gives them seems very begrudging. I believe he holds them to a different, higher standard than the rest of us...thank goodness
He inserts his own editorial throughout the lecture, which I felt took away from the learning.
Easy going and easy grader. Shows some boring movies but also showed a few really awesome ones. Good prof overall.
Philosophic guy who wrote an essay on: "Science can show HOW things happen in this way, not WHY" right in his freshmen year.
Pretty good over all. Covers a lot of material. Grades hard on research papers.
Great guy, good teacher.
I took his film viewing and construction class and thought it was the easiest class I have taken. The class met once a week for roughly 3 hours, he lectured for the 1st half hour or so, then we watched a film for the remainder. Although some of the films were boring and so was he I recommend this class if you're looking for an easy "A" take this.
He's a pretty good prof overall. His lectures were a bore. Uses the book a lot. Easy class if you follow. Found him to be biased towards democrats... overall though a good prof.
Good professor. It's ovious that he has a lot of experience teaching and does what works. If you think philosophy is boring, you won't like this class, but regardless Mr. Rydman is a good teacher. Didn't see a bias toward democrats, it seems like he followed every joke or citicism about Republicans with one about democrats and vice versa.
Awesome professor who is very knowledgable on the subject matter. Gives points for class participation, so get incolved in the discussion. Has a really sharp sense of humor. I really enjoyed this class!
I took the class for a Gen Ed but I ended up really loving it. He makes the class easy to understand the philosophers and explains the tests and paper well. Good class to take.
Dont need to really read the text. just talk in class
Knowledgeable, but his class is based purely on him lecturing the entire hour and a half, two days a week. He will walk in and just start talking and not stop until the very end. Great if you love philosophy, but a little more student interaction would be ideal.
He is a weird guy, funny to some people. Very smart. Just lectures, you should talk in class, has quizes maybe every other week. takes attendance, I didn't read the book, talked once or twice a class period and got a B, do the review for the 2 exams, there is 1 paper, I am somewhat interested, be a realist
I took his intercultural communications, and I really enjoyed it. He's funny and really helpful. I never dreaded going to class, and it was very easy for me to get an A. Lots of group work, some lecture and a few projects.
Your class grade is based on answering questions, which is ridiculous. You have to answer questions 2x a day to pass his class, but if other ppl already said your answer obviously you're not going to get points. And all he does is talk forever.
SO BORING. He talks from the moment he takes attendance to the very last second of class. The only questions he asks have nothing to do with PL. Nothing he says makes sense. I fell asleep sitting up in his class. Basically, you will want to kill yourself, but it isn't hard, and you'll get a good grade if you come to class and barely study.
I really enjoyed this class. I recommend taking it more than one day a week for those who have trouble paying attention to long lectures. Great teacher!
Great teacher. Quirky but cool. Sometimes he answers questions with another answer to a diff questions but ok. Lectures from beginning to end, only a few "fun" things, knowledgable, humorous, 6 pop quizes. i didnt study for any, made up the points by commenting in class. Easy A for me.
I had Prof Rydman for a film viewing class. He's a bit on the nerdy side, but one of the coolest profs I had. He didn't take crap from the students, which I loved about him. He would lecture on film history, etc. and then we would watch a feature length film. Graded easily. I loved having him as a professor.
I got an A, but with good effort. U have to read a lot. His paper was hard, but he graded it really easily. Very nice person, fairly funny too. He does talk pretty much the entire class. He's a nice guy because I missed a day due to bad weather, but he didn't count the zero on my quiz. His tests are easy. Each test is 3 questions. Fine teacher.
Hands down, the most boring class I have taken in my life. He loves to hear himself talk, and will not accept ideas that aren't his own. Quizzes almost every class, and are randoms out of the book. Almost none will stick once you read 50 pages a night. I NEVER fall asleep in class, and this man had me falling asleep sitting up. Not advisable.
Professor Rydman does lecture for most of the class. He is fair and gives you a 10-15 min break for the 3 hr classes. You have to put in work to pass this class. Philosophy is a boring subject to those with no prior interest, but Rydman is nice, funny, and intelligent. If you are willing to study hard and put in effort you'll be ok.
he has been THE WORST PROFESSOR i have had in my 4 years of college, and that is saying something! he talks literally the entire 2 hours of class, is extremely monotone and BORING! do not take him you will be sorry that you did! The assignments are vague and when you give opinions he tells you that you are wrong! WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!
Long winded and boring. Continuously discussed a film being so amazing, yet did not show it in class. Unclear on what he expected on assignments and rather degrading.
Quirky guy, but very intelligent... Read the book and take notes during class... One research paper and a mid and final test... Gives you a list of potential questions and picks three of them... Know em all and you pass the tests... 6 random quizzes that are not difficult... Easy class overall...
Rydman is a pretty funny teacher, but the class is very boring. If he disagrees with you, he lets you know. Very rarely will he show a video, this is a lecture class. You have to read the book and know small details for 6 quizzes. The midterm and final aren't bad, you just need to study. I'm glad I'm done with this class, but I did learn a lot.
Loved the class. Great lectures, I had a great time in the class.
Without any previous exposure to philosophy, I found his lectures to actually be more on the interesting side than it seems he gets credit for. If you read the chapter summaries in the book, you'll do just fine on the pop quizzes! However, the research paper is very tough to do, and is 100% self-guided. Overall solid class though!
He's the worst professor I've ever had for a lot of reasons I won't bother listing here. One is: he'll mark you down a lot for not being a great artist on the final project.
Boring. I am respectful of my professors and try to at least pretend im paying attention. This guy will put you to sleep no matter how much you try not to. He is funny and his class is easy. Class is not hard, just really really really really boring.
Really nice guy, and a pretty easy class. Does tend to mark students down a lot if they do not come to class, because a lot of his assignments are in class.
Easy class, he talks the entire class time. He is really boring. He reads from his sharpie, alot. He is a nice guy, easy grader. Read the book and you will pass, easily.
He's a nice guy, a little bit hard to hear and really likes to talk, but he's always interesting. He selects good films and makes thought provoking assignments to go along with them. The final project is exciting as well, and he's a fair grader, very liberal with the extra credit.
The class is easy. There are short assignments at the end of class. There is one bigger project. Read over the book, it will greatly help for the final exam. The Prof is nice. The class is also extremely boring.
This was a great class. You can get participation points for class discussion that will either complement or make up for pop quiz scores. The midterm and final exams are both all-essay, and he provides you with the questions ahead of time (he gives you ten, three of which will be the exam - you just don't know which.) Great discussions. Easy A.
Tons of reading. Speaks either way too quiet or way too loud. His stories were pretty funny, but overall the class dragged on. The quizzes were constant and confusing. The material covered was much different than what was seen on the quizzes. The essays will save you in the end if you're a good writer and competent in the subject of Philosophy.
Worst profesor I have EVER had. Makes you uncomfortable to even ask him a question! Talks the whole three hour class, incredibly boring.
Professor Rydman seems like a nice guy. The class was extremely easy, mostly 1-hour lectures followed by watching a movie. Short assignments followed each movie, and his grading of these assignments is very easy. The final exam is a little strangely worded, though. You'll need to study to pass it - it is worth 25% of your grade.
He is a good teacher. It is a film viewing class so you will be watching old movies every class. He's hard to hear and understand. But he IS STUCK in the 90s. His film teaching is fro the 90s even how to videos are 20 years old. He Is does not teach modern film techniques. Show up to answer a short question about the film for credit.
Overall he is an okay professor but like many others have said, he talks the entire class and sometimes it seems he's just talking to himself but yet expects us to listen closely. The bright side is that we do watch movies every class but they are sometimes hard to follow and expects us to take notes on them. But I would try to avoid his classes.
Very nice professor. Can be difficult to pay attention to at times because he is very soft spoken and tends to rant. However, he is helpful and the grading criteria is very clear.
Oh boy, this guy was quite the character. He lectures for the first hour, and then students watch a movie which they will have to critique after. That being said, his lectures are INCREDIBLY boring. He basically just spurts out random trivia facts and giggles to himself for an hour. However, he is very approachable and an easy grader.
This dude makes me crack up. Not because he is funny- but because he is just such a goofy guy. I read a comment about how he "talks for n hour to himself and laughs at his own jokes" and it couldn't be more accurate.
Class is mostly lecture, but he really knows what he is talking about and makes it really interesting especially if you participate. Funny stories and is more concerned that you are involved and understand rather that focus on a grade. If you put in effort he will work with you! Great Guy
This guy is something else. He's kind of a weirdo. BUT he is overall nice enough and his class really isn't hard if you pay attention. He does so pop quizzes and they're only worth about ten points but they can really make or break you grade until the final and midterm if you don't read. I would take him again, but he is terrible boring... but easy
His class in the introduction to philosophy requires surprisingly little critical thinking. For his tests, don't try to think outside the box or contextualize it. All he wants is for you to regurgitate his lectures, in his own words, back at him. And his grading depends on how "ornery" he is feeling that day. I'm serious . . . his own words.
All you do is watch a movie every class time. Lectures for maybe forty-five minutes then you watch a movie! You have to write and answer a few questions about each movie. So if you watch the movie you'll do fine. Final project is to make your own 2 minute movie short or draw a story board really really easy
Nice guy that talks way too much about random crap. He cant stay on topic no matter what and judges you when you ever say something logical. Daydreams often and mumbles to himself when students are working on a case studies. The man must have voted for Hillary Clinton. He overall just doesnt click with society and makes many feel uncomfortable.
Boring as can be. Monotone with very little personality. Off topic waaay too much. Often goes off topic and rambles. Occasionally he links his stories back to the lecture, so you don't know when his stories are relevant or not. Only grades are semi regular quizzes based on assigned reading as well as the midterm and final. Knows his stuff.
For film u will get 2 class and he will go over the reading assignments from the prior week and share a video or two about each weeks topics. Then he will talk 2 u briefly about the movie u'll watch that day and the assignment due at the end of class. Assignments are under a page long and are handwritten. 1 final exam and 2-8 min film or paper.
Rydman is good, but as others mentioned, is very, VERY dry and monotone. For philosophy he spent the whole hour and a half talking quietly at the front of the room about the lecture of the day and myself and others found it very hard to stay awake and not just stare at the clock. Easy class if youre willing to suffer through a snore fest.
DO NOT TAKE HIS PHILOSOPHY CLASS! Mr. Rydman is AWFUL at lecture. He says maybe 10 minutes worth of useful information in a 2 hour time span. His quizzes are off the reading assignments, but only on the unimportant information. He rambles about trump, movies, and other things he thinks students will find interesting. IT'S NOT.
Please save your money and do not take professor Rydman. All he do does is lecture throughout the whole class, do not have any engagement with students. You will have quizzes every week about the textbook so you better prepare yourself. He assigns a research paper and is a tough grader. Both midterm exam and final exam will be essay questions.
The uninspiring and detached manner in which the professor leads his class only further increases my disinterest in it. Hard to hear, and too tangential, what little important information is given, is too vague to be of any help. Anybody can pass this class without much effort, if any, but you wont be expanding your knowledge any.
Great guy! I would take all his classes if i could. Tells great stories and his classes are pretty straight forward.
