Great interesting class. I learned alot.
Knows the material and teaches it in a way I could understand (I was not much of a molecular biology fan but understood most of this class). Very helpful. Take advantage of speaking with him during office hours. Very approachable.
He records the lecture and post it online. However, there is Iclicker questions that are not recorded. He explains very clearly and if you memorize his powerpoints and know the material you will do great in his exams. I never used the textbooks or Internet to study or further understand the material but listened to his records and took notes.
He is great! If you listen to the recorded lectures and take notes, half of your studying is done. Just gotta learn everything by heart! He explains quite well, and wishes best for the students. Give tutorial session before each exam where you can just ask all your questions. Plus, If you do badly in one of the midterms it can count for 10% ..
He's a really good teacher but the midterms are difficult, at least in my opinion but that shouldn't stop anyone from trying because this way may be the best way to learn how to prepare for future classes for those who don't test well. Listen and take good notes and that A is yours.
you are provided with every tool to get an A in his class and he's really nice
There is A LOT of material for this course, be prepared to work. Mr Sacher expect you to memorize every detail of every slides, so start working at the begining of the semester otherwise you'll fail the course
His lecture slides are AMAZING, didn't need to open any textbook. However, both midterms were really tough and the class average was low (around 50/100 on the second one). Memorize every single detail in his notes!
The material is complicated and sometimes not so interesting, but he does try to liven it up a bit by making jokes. He's clear and willing to answer questions. Midterms were pretty specific and tough however the final was easy. Also assigns 5 marks of your grade to participation with "Clicker Questions". Slides are clear, did not use textbook.
I loved this teacher. His notes are so easy to understand, and he explains everything so clearly and he definitely knows what he's talking about. He talks really fast, but he posts an audio recording of his lectures online so you can always re-listen to them if there is something you missed. I would take him again 100%
Really available for the students, he has review sessions before each exams. The material is heavy but he makes it easy to understand. He really knows what he's talking about, and is also always posting the lectures online (which is EXTRA useful if you missed something in class). The exams were hard but really doable if you study well.
Incredible lectures, three term exams instead of one midterm which helps with the heavy course load. Didn't need the textbook at all. His slides are very thorough and he posts the audio from his lectures online. I would definitely take his courses again.
Dr. Sacher is one of best prof I've had at Concordia. His lectures notes are very thorough, he posts his lecture recordings online in case you missed a class and has review sessions before exams. His clicker questions are useful and helps you familiarize with his types of questions. His exams are very fair, and he always adds some jokes in them. :)
Grateful for his recorded lectures
Simply the greatest - an absolute MUST TAKE. He teaches the material so clearly and provides you with every tool you need to succeed (clicker questions that resemble test questions, recorded lectures, very thorough lecture notes). Test are on the tough side, but his questions aren't "tricky", only test to see if you know the facts. Would take again
Dr. Sacher's lectures are very well organized. His notes are complete, no need for textbook. He posts lecture recordings which helps a lot when it comes to studying. Tests are not easy but definitely doable if you study well.
He is one of the best teacher I have ever seen.
He is a very good teacher, he explains well and his slides are very clear. He is available outside of class, he did review sessions outside class before the exams. However, his exams are hard and the class in general is quite hard.
Very detailed & clear slides with many figures, didn't even use the textbook. His class is recorded and posted on moodle and has 2 grading schemes to give you the best mark. He also has a 5% clicker portion for participation. His tests are fair if you study, however the final is cumulative with emphasis on last 1/3 material but it's super easy.
Did not need a textbook. Amazing, detailed powerpoints. Great lectures, very clear and concise but not boring. recorded lectures so you can follow along at home. Material is pretty memorization heavy, but study hard and you'll do fine. Amazing guy really.
definitely the best. Highly recommended
Great lectures and amazing PowerPoints. Really love him. The exams are detailed but quite easy.
Amazing and clear power points and you no need for the textbook. Provides recorded lectures (audio only) Must attend all classes since he used TopHat for participation grades. His midterms are fair if you studied. As for the final, very similar format as his midterm. I found that the final was easier than the midterm.
I took Biol 266 before the introduction of tutorials, so I can't comment on that aspect. 226 is a very interesting but it can be a difficult course at times. He's truly one of the best profs in the department. 2 midterms, one assignment (Extremely easy), in class top questions, and a final. His tests are short answers + mc, fair, but do study!
Although his lectures are good, his exams are difficult and some questions are very specific (require memorization). He also gives assignments and TopHat questions for attendance. His assignments, however are not regular. You must check the site every night almost. It was easy to forget an assignment as there was no notification system.
He puts a lot of work into his lectures and it shows! A generally difficult and info-heavy course, but I found it much easier to follow because of the order in which he presents the material. Plus he keeps it interesting by connecting mechanisms to actual medical conditions and/or fun facts! Would definitely take again
Used a text book last term which was kind of expensive but he assigned questions every week. Uses tophat for questions in the class so make sure you attend. Midterm tests were hard but final was quite easy. Really liked the material!
good lectures. organized and full of informations. Tutorials were hard but i learned more things in them. Midterm tests were detailed. The final exam was very fair. could use the textbook more (only used for homework)
Professor Sacher is a great teacher! His lectures are very clear and interesting, and he keeps it fun with humour. If you go through all the lectures, understand the material, and then memorize details, you will get a good grade. His exams are extremely fair and straightforward. Tutorials are challenging but mostly count for participation!
A lot of students found his tests to be hard but i thought they were pretty straightforward. I definitely would take him again. I recommend!!
He is an awesome professor, clearly cares about the material and his students. The tutorials are mostly participation based, as are the in class questions, so you can easily build up your grade. The material is tough, but his exams are very fair, some questions are detailed, but there are also a few very easy questions mixed in.
He is very accessible to students. The lectures are long, try to read the slide before to better understand the material. Don't study at the last minute. Beware that there is a lot of memorization and exams are proctored.
awesome teacher! lectures were long but interesting and he explained the material well. tests were super doable if you studied the slides. would take him again!!
Sacher is just amazing, his lectures include absolutely everything you need for the midterm and final, I crammed 3 days of studying the lectures alone just before the final, and I got an A+. However, the exams were proctored, labs were really fun too and the TA was nice, it sucked that we didn't get lab grades but overall I highly recommend Sacher
Best bio prof I have ever had! The course is material heavy, but his lectures and power points are clear and detailed enough to study for exams. He makes the material interesting, you actually learn a lot! He gives different grading options to optimize your grades and his exams are fair. 100% recommend taking his class if you ever get the chance!
good luck
terrible teacher in 400 level. most condescending prof ever had at ConU (especially in his overly frequent and snarky emails). Not approachable, not understanding. Never believes his students or takes any responsibility or blame. Insinuates that students are cheaters at every opportunity.
If you do not need 466. Avoid AT ALL COST.
Not sure what the reviews below are about (guessing the same person submitting multiple time). Great lectures, a lot of work and I found the email communication very helpful. I think he did the best he could with zoom classes. Always available during office hours and other times.
466 felt like a molecular biology research project in an actual internship. Dr. Sacher gave good lectures and more than enough tools to succeed. The course requires lots of external research, consulting tools (databases, softwares) and autonomy in beginning assignments early. Understanding of the pandemic and its impact on students.
Great lecturer. A lot of work but it was integrated with the labs. The lab worked felt a bit overwhelming but it was crammed into fewer labs because of covid. The final lab report took a lot of work but if you start working on it early its not a big deal. Loved the course!
Dr. Sacher is one of my favourite profs at Concordia! Very clear lectures and very fair assignments/quizzes. Most of what is seen in class directly relates to the portion of the course which is amazing!! 100% recommend.
The course is fantastic. If you want to work in a lab, you must take it. It is heavy and requires background knowledge in molecular biology but worth it. Dr. Sacher is a fantastic professor. I had him for cell biology as well. He is caring, funny and understanding. His gives you the information you need. His exams are very conceptual .
The best professor I ever had! The lectures notes and explanations are very clear. Very approachable and understanding professor especially during pandemic time. He tried his best to help each student in the class! Assignments are interesting and give the opportunity to work with external databases. Really liked that class and exam! Awesome prof!
Amazing prof - wants success for his students. Took his class during the pandemic and he was very rational & understanding. Many emails from teacher so nothing was undefined. Had some issues with quiz/exam questions but prof took responsibility and corrected error. EVERYTHING u need (websites, instructions etc) is clear on course website or outline
With the pandemic and the dread of online class, Dr Sacher made his course stand out. He is very informative and inspiring. I took 466 with him and it is definitely a course that prepares you for research in further years or for jobs. It's a valuable experience cuz he not only teaches you the material but also the realness of lab work + life in sci
Really enjoyed this class. It feels like working in a real lab and the final was set up like a project so you could see how applicable the material was. knowledgeable and friendly prof. Highly recommend this class, but filled up quickly so get on waitlist early.
Two thumbs up! Very helpful and answers questions till you understand the material. Be ready to work hard but you'll get so much out of the course and see practical examples of lab work, not just theory.
Its disappointing to see so many new positive comments after Sacher sent us all an email saying he disagreed with one negative comment someone made. Give honest reviews people.
for anyone reading these comments trying to srsly decide whether to take 466, you should be made aware that any positive comment made on or after may 10 is falsely representative of the course. sacher sent his students an email essentially guilt-tripping them to do so.
fills the class with examples and encourages discussion about them. I feeel i can read a paper and understand what was done and why. Great class.
Excellent!
When the pandemic started and the University did not allow tests to be given he ignored the schools instructions and gave us a quiz to do anyway which was mandatory. Also when grades came in for the quiz he insinuated that the average was higher than the last two years and the only plausible reasons was that students cheated via one of three ways
ok teacher... start studying and doing your work early
Go to the lectures, and you'll be fine. Explains things really well. The labs were really fun and realistic. Grading was tough but fair.
For those choosing between the two sections of this course I took it two times (prof Titorenko and Sacher) and highly recommend taking with Prof Sacher. He is very clear, always relates things to human health and takes time to answer questions in class. Tutorials were ridiculously hard but mostly just count for participation.
Dr. Sacher is really the best teacher you can take for cell biology. The class is heavy and expect a lot of memorization. However, Dr. Sacher makes it really easy for you; slides are heavy but they are everything you will need for revision. His exams are fair, just do not expect them to be too easy. I would highly recommend Dr. Sacher.
If you have the chance to take this prof for cell bio, go for it! He encourages class discussion and is always available for questions outside of the classroom. His exams are fair and everything you need is in his slides. He's a comedic and passionate prof. It really shows that he cares for his students and wants to see them excel in the course.
I would suggest taking this prof for cell biology. Lectures were clear although some material was difficult. Dr. Sacher had a lot of time for students outside of class, was very approachable and accomodating for students who missed homework. He made the class very interesting.
He is best prof you could take for 266! He records all his lectures so if you ever miss something you can always go back. His midterm and final were fair, with a couple difficult questions! Always made class very interesting by relating it to human health, has some good jokes too.
Dr. Sacher is by far one of the best teachers I've had, ever! He knows how to explain, will re-explain if you don't get it, simplifies things a lot, and even makes analogies so you can get the material. You can ask him as many questions as you want w/o feeling dumb. Super friendly when you see him for his office hours. Highly recommend.
Great lectures delivery, very organized and passionate about the subject (one of the best at Concordia)! Participation in quizzes and smartworks matters, textbook helps. Re-watch his recorded lectures before the exams (or take notes). A lot of material to learn.
I don't think I'll enjoy a class as much as I enjoyed Biol 266 with Dr. Sacher. The material can be very dense but his lectures are so well organized that it makes all the difference when trying to understand complicated mechanisms. His recorded lectures are all you need to do well on the exams. Attendance counts for iclicker questions.
Dr. Sacher is one of the best professors at Concordia. He knows his material very well and his explanations are clear. He didn't count homework that students missed. He had group sessions to go over midterms. Very funny too, tutorials were hard but interesting. The second midterm is quite difficult, study extra and you'll be fine. Definitely take
I will just be repeating what others below have said. Amazing teacher. Engaging and very interesting lectures. Exams are EXTREMELY fair. No tricks. If you study you can get an A+
While attendance isn't required, the lectures are amazing and interesting. The lab component is different as it is a long project where you work on it for many weeks to produce a manuscript. It's a lot of work but, it is a good learning experience. Would definitely take his class again. The quizzes and finals were fair. Assignments are easy.
Super nice guy, caring and explains like a gem. Exams are tough-ish. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Sacher was such an amazing teacher. His slides are so detailed with many visuals to to complement explanations. His midterms and final exam reflect heavily on things covered in the slides so make sure to study those slides well. He cares about his students and wants the best outcome I recommend him tremendously!
Super engaging lecturer! The course material is VERY dense but he does a pretty good job of explaining it. Overall, recommend!
There's a lot to know for the midterms, but at least everything you need to know is on the slides so no need to grab the textbook. Explains the material very well. Only thing annoying about the class are the tutorials which confused me more than helped me but it wasn't too complex and they only count as participation grade.
Really awesome teacher, made a normally pretty boring subject to be quite enjoyable. There's a lot of in-class questions, and there's a lot of homework but it's all really easy if you pay attention and actually study. There is a ton of stuff to know for the exams, but if you study up and get the material, they're super easy to do well on.
Heavy but coherent course. Dr. Sacher does a good job presenting the information without getting bogged down in details. Slides are good. Grading scheme very friendly. Exams are written incredibly well; very fair and no surprises. Cue cards are a must for this course. Tutorials are a bit tedious but ultimately glorified attendance marks.
The class is very heavy, but Sacher makes it as approachable as it can be. His slides are thorough and informative. The tutorials are really enjoyable and complex, and the fact that they're graded on participation only is nice. This class intimidated me but in the end Sacher gives you everything you need to get a decent grade.
Dr. Sacher has got to be my favorite professor at Concordia. His lectures are well-structured and very engaging. He asks many questions during lectures that help you consolidate the information you learn about. Attendance is mandatory. This class is quite heavy in terms of material but doable if you stay on top of your studies. Exams are fair.
honestly loved biol266 with this prof. He is super kind and approachable and can make hard concepts seem easier by relating them to something easier or making jokes. 100% would retake
HE IS THE BEST!!! listen to his lectures again and again and then again. You will feel he speaks the whole exam during his lectures. The only prof who can actually teach.
Sacher's teaching is good although the course is very heavy. His exams are fair and straightforward. He never posts video lectures though, only voice memos which you have to match to the slides. his slides aren't informative and just filled with pictures with many gaps left to your mind to fill, he didn't use the book which was confusing.
he can be nice and cracks jokes but there is a surprise dark side to exams
Lots of material to learn for this course. But he's very helpful and exams are the fairest I have had. Just need to study every week. Great lecturer.
sacher is honestly one of my favorite teachers at concordia. the course itself is heavy with lots of memorization but he makes it so enjoyable!!!! his exams are also very straightforward. if you study the lectures well you will do well.
if you have the chance to take him DO IT!!!! He is a great prof. His midterms were harder than his final (specially the second midterm so start studying early). Go to the tutorials they were super confusing but easy points. Kinda mean when you ask him questions but still tries to answer them.
You have to attend class but lectures and notes are extremely clear. Professor wants you to succeed
Best lecturer of all time!!?! The material is hard but he makes it easy to understand. His cadence and his knowledge makes this course so enjoyable. I wouldn't take this class with any other professor! He's amazing :)
He's a good professor however the material is tough. There is a lot to go through so you cannot fall behind. He uses TopHat to grade participation in class so i would recommend attending every class. Another thing is the tutorials are quite useless. However, participation is graded so you should still go. But it does not help with studying at all.
He is overall a good professor and there to help if you have questions. The material is a lot and his exams are based on a lot of detail on the chapters, so be ready to study a lot. Tutorials are easy grades all that matters is attendance, lectures sometimes boring and he also has tophat questions for participation so be sure not to miss that.
He's good. The material is hard but dr sacher tries his best to guide you through it. His tests are very fair and there are no trick questions. Tutorials are a good way to get exposed to papers you might read in later courses but they're not relevant to the material tested on.
Lots of material in the lectures but presents it well. Exams are fair but long and the final exam was surprisingly not that hard. Tutorials were confusing but I liked the material in them once the TA explained it. Gives homework questions a few times per week, but they were helpful and not tooo hard.
His lectures are so clear and he emphasizes what you should know for test. He also recorded them, which I loved. His tests are sooo easy as long as you study/memorize his PowerPoints. A+ is very achievable if you put in the work.
I'm a graduate student working with him, and I have to say he's been amazing! He's given me some really exciting experiments that are super engaging. If you're looking to develop your science skills, I definitely recommend him! However, it's a journey that takes time, but the rewards are absolutely worth it, you'll have memories you won't forget!
The course is extremely heavy and there's a lot of studying needed, but his lecture slides are super clear and he does an amazing job explaining everything in a way that makes sense. The midterms are super specific so study details you think you won't need. The tutorials are completely irrelevant to the course but you get full marks just for going.
Professor Sacher has been my favourite prof so far! His lectures are super detailed and he really goes through everything. Go to class because he does TopHat questions. Go to class, take notes, make notes, and study continuously. It's a difficult class but not that hard if you simply keep up and try!
Very nice and engaging prof. The course is heavy on memorization. Must attend class cause there are graded in-class questions. MTs are straightforward, I found the final easier than the MTs. Tutorials are unrelated to test material, but go to them all since they're a free 10%. If you memorize the slides, an A is easy. Midterm averages are high 70s.
An amazing teacher. The material is difficult but if you know the material on the lectures, youll do great in his class. There are no surprises on the midterms or final, everything he grades you on is found directly in his powerpoints.
