Easy to get a good grade BUT you have to show effort. Participation matters a lot, not only showing up to classes but also participating in discussions. A real gem for the WRDS nightmare. Got a 97 in a 73 class average, really just do your homework and participate and you're good. Gives great feedback.
Great professor who will give you lots of opportunities to improve your writing and provides valuable feedback. Attendance, participation and staying on schedule will lead you quite easily to an A. I never thought of myself as a writer, however ended with a 99 by following his feedback and staying on top of the components of the main paper.
take his class period
Michael always came across quite self-righteous in his lectures, and we never really learned exactly how to write research papers and what was expected of us was unclear. However, as long as you participate a few times per class and do your best on all of the assignments, you can get a really good grade so it's somewhat worth it.
An amazing professor that gives great feedback and a chance for you to learn and grow. I would say hes currently my favourite prof! Totally recommend his class.
One of the most caring and understanding profs I have had. Also very flexible. I believe this was his first time teaching this course, so he was lenient and open about assignments - there was no wrong answer, it's your experience that matters and perspective. Work hard and communicate with him and you'll do great in this course. Amazing person.
He's an amazing prof! He cares about students' progress and gives detailed feedback. He's lenient about deadlines and grammar mistakes. If you try to stay on top of everything and show a real attitude to learn especially for your research, you will end up with a good grade
Awesome professor who encourages participation. I know some people who are intimidated by him because he tends to point at you and ask for your opinions, which I personally think is great. He gives incredibly detailed feedback, very flexible, and is so prepared now that classes are online. Be ready cuz there's LOTS of hw though.
He's an excellent teacher, and I would retake his class in a heartbeat.
Professor Schandorf is an incredible teacher. ASTU 101 was not easy. There is a lot of reading and writing, but he is flexible with deadlines. I really enjoyed his class, and my writing has improved a lot from his heavy feedback. There are many group assignments, but everyone in my group was very cooperative and the prof is open to any concerns.
Michael made me enjoy a course I thought I was gonna hate. It's a lot of work but he gives very detailed feedback and I learnt a lot. 10/10 recommended.
A great professor definitely recommended! WRDS is actually not an easy course. For me, the concepts of discourse and discipline were vague at first. But Dr. Schandorf really hopes that you will gain something and generously provide help and feedback! Pay attention to do everything in accordance with the process, and you will succeed in this course!
Michael really cares about the level of participation of his students in the classroom, and he hopes you learn something. There is no doubt that as an advanced discipline writing course, the material to be read is very heavy, but Michael is always here to help. If you have the opportunity to have a class with him, please agree without hesitation! A
Michael is an amazing prof, without his constant life advice I wouldn't have survived first year. ASTU 101 is not an easy class, you have to put in a lot of hard work and be on top of deadlines. Though with a prof like Michael you're guaranteed to do great his famous quote "good stuff a little late, is better than bad stuff on time."
A humorous professor! The learning content of the whole course is really unfamiliar and difficult, but Michael really integrates them into his teaching in a very flexible way! Good people who really care about your knowledge acquisition are definitely recommended by UBC students!
WRDS is a tricky course for most students, but Michael has made his own efforts to enable students to better understand the concepts of discourse and discipline. A professor who cares about the participation spirit of students, so don't leave him alone, he really hopes you will be successful in this course!
A later comment. I have Michael in my winter 2 semester this year. He cares about students very much. One participatory discussion time per week and Michael organizes online courses very well, I definitely recommend him! This class is based on a workshop-shop style course on the subject of disciplined communities, without mid-term and final.
Michael is a super nice prof don't get me wrong but he hands out homework like there's no tomorrow. Out of all the assignments he gave us, which every week was an essay on a 20-page article, 1-hour theory lessons you get quizzed on, and group blog posts, all outside of class time, I pretty much handed in 99% of the work late. It's just too much!
I really appreciate his teaching style. The deadlines are flexible and he offers unlimited feedback and attempts to submit some assignments. Easy 100% on assignments if you can follow his feedback. workload is heavy but worth it. I was scared to take wrds150 the whole time and glad I was in his session. I might check out his new course wrds250
If you get the assigned work done and participate in class, you will do well in his class. The deadlines are flexible, but it's highly recommended to get started on the work early, especially the research proposal. He responds quickly to messages outside of class. There are no limits on the amount of feedback you can get for submitted work.
His class is quite tough specially the research proposals and research papers. He is chill with deadlines. Whatever he explains goes over the head
Micheal is super nice, yet he expects WAY too much from his students. I can't even write how many assignments we had for one week without exceeding the character limit rate my prof allows you to write for a review... that should tell you just how much he assigned. The class average for my class was 55, which is ridiculous! Do NOT take his class!
Michael's coursework is heavy and the assigned material is extremely abstract and difficult to understand. But fear not, if you try hard enough to do your job well, it will pay off. He appreciates people who put in hard work and hard work, and staying active is a tip for success.
Micheal takes participation very seriously and has its own course expectations. He encourages students to discuss and does not judge others' opinions freely. If you are a cheerful and active person, then you will be much more relaxed. He would like to see more people participating in the discussion, and the item markings are fair.
He is an amazing professor. He is really caring towards the students. The class is a little heavy in terms of work, but even if you put a little effort in, he will recognize it. The class discussions were really well led by him and overall super interesting. He is also very accommodating and understanding. He gives amazing detailed feedback too!
I'm not sure about Michael's assessment at ASTU, but I absolutely support you in joining his WRDS class. Michael's teaching allowed me to really learn from abstract discourse concepts. The writing assessment for workshop-style courses is very intensive and you need to put in a lot of effort. But they are definitely worth it, I promise!
Michael is a caring and smart professor! He is sometimes paranoid about wanting every student to speak his mind. The final dissertation is divided into many steps. Make sure you read the material Michael provides so you can share more in class, he doesn't care if the opinions are right or wrong (because he knows the material is hard).
Amazing professor! I asked my friends who took ASTU with a different prof and the feedback I heard was shocking. I enjoyed every class and every lecture while my friends were complaining about how boring their course is. I think that says a lot. If you wanna an easy grade for doing nothing, just drop it then, this prof won't let you pull that off.
Michael needs you to show enough contribution and participation in the class, which honestly can be a challenge for students who are not good at speaking. But as long as you're brave enough and take all your work seriously, it's not too hard to get a good grade.
He assigns a lot of work, but he is very flexible and understanding with deadlines and as long as you hand in the work he is a pretty easy marker. The course is really well structured, it does a really good job building up to and teaching academic writing and discourse. From what I've heard about other WRDS profs, he is likely the best one.
he makes classes interesting, but be prepared for lots of readings
Participation matters SO MUCH IN THIS COURSE. Do not take if you are not prepared to talk and share ACTIVELY (he notes this down). He is very flexible and accessible, but do NOT get behind as it is difficult to catch up later. He will help you become a better scholar, but if you are concerned with your grade, keep up and make sure to talk, a LOT.
Michael is amazing! I had a pleasant experience with the WRDS 350, even though the course was rather difficult. He is eager for students to be highly engaged and productive in the classroom. Keeping in mind participation, communication, and speaking in class, the ace is easy.
The first thing to say is that the WRDS 350 course reading was really tough, but Michael really knew what to do with us. If you're shy about expressing your thoughts, he'll push you to get over it, because he doesn't like silence without discussion. Be brave enough to voice your opinion and show engagement, and the rewards are great.
I highly recommend!! Scandorf FTW! :) Pros: easy marker, chill + understanding, office hours instead of class on one day. Cons: success highly dependent on teammates, a LOT of forgettable assignments that can pile up, deadlines confusing near finals. VERY discussion heavy. I personally liked this, you don't have to be perfect, just try your best!
WRDS 350 was a fun class but incredibly participation heavy (%15) if you're anxious speaking up in class this is not for you. If you do the readings it can be as interesting as a course about writing can be. Easy marker and a really understanding prof. He locks his canvas modules so u have to complete every task in order to do the next.
Take Prof Schandorf's class!! English is not my first language so WRDS 150 was a nightmare for me. But Prof Schandorf is so caring, inspirational, and an easy marker! However, there are a loooot of reading and you have to make sure you don't fall behind. Some assignments do worth a lot, so don't pile up until the last minute to do them.
To be honest I'm really a non-verbal person and I get nervous when communicating with people (English is not my first language). But Michael's driving of the classroom atmosphere really benefited me a lot, and other people in the class got along very well with me. A very pleasant course experience brings you more than just grades.
Dr. Schandorf is a great prof. Although he gives a lot of assignments, he provides feedback fast and gives a fair grade. Taking the course would take up a lot of your time and be prepared to write, but I also learned a lot from this course and really improved my English. Overall Dr. Schandorf is a great prof and a good choice for the WRDS course.
Not even a month into the course with this prof, he is a very tough grader. He doesn't tell you how to make your work better, only tells you its terrible and you need to do better. I cannot stand it.
Dr. Schandorf is a very knowledgeable person and if you are shy about expressing it, the course may be difficult at first. But he tolerates your point of view (even if he disagrees), and the course process is the same as workshop. The concept of discourse is abstract and difficult to understand, but if you keep up with the pace, you will be fine.
Michael Schandorf is an amazing professor. He is great at explaining concepts and passionate about helping students understand, and I genuinely feel like I improved in academic writing so much. His course is structured a bit differently than other WRDS 150As, but don't let that turn you away. It is absolutely possible to get a very high grade.
Michael really knows how to handle everything, and he is very happy to see students from different majors interacting together. The final project is 60% phased, but as long as you follow through, you can succeed. Also, being active in class is a great way to communicate (he never laughs at your stupid questions and is eager to help).
Michael is knowledgable, helpful, and a great teacher. If you try, you can succeed and learn a lot. 10/10 reccomend
Dr.Schandorf is amazing! Came into uni hating the communications req but somehow he made me rly enjoy WRDS? I actually learned a lot in his class and feel much more prepared for academic writing. He gives incredibly detailed feedback you can tell he genuinely wants you to succeed. Verryyy participation heavy but I enjoyed that.
Amazing prof. TAKE WRDS WITH HIM. He is one of the easiest profs to get a good grade in for WRDS150B. Although there were a lot of assignments, we were granted 5-day grace periods which helped a lot. Make sure to participate in class discussions, but as long as you show progression through the class you should be golden.
Incredibly self-righteous, do not take his class if you're a STEM student as he makes it blatantly obvious he's only there to support arts students writing skills (and this class is required by STEM's). Readings/assignments are mostly useless if you're not going into a writing major/career. Not sure how he stacks up against other WRDS profs, but GL
completion-based marking. 7-day grace period. easy grade if this is your only course. But there is just so much work it's insane. I took 5 courses and I spent more time doing WRDS work than the other 4 courses combined. Also, pretty reading-heavy. Lectures are all online so you've to waste your own time. class is solely discussions about readings.
Definitely one of the best professor I have ever had, great marking scale, as he only takes marks off if we do not reflect on his feedbacks. He replies to every email in less than 10 mins even on weekends and outside of class! Great professor!!
I've always dreaded the communication requirement, but Dr. Schandorf changed that perspective. He is the most caring professor I've ever had, who genuinely wanted students to learn from his class. I cannot recommend taking WRDS with him enough.
He is a great prof, but the homework is too much and the feedback was not helpful.
INSANE amount of work. Wouldn't let people due the peer review (worth 10%) because it was past the deadline despite almost no one being able to meet said deadline. Content was boring and this class was the cause of the most stress I've had at university. I've heard other classes have different topics so chose something interesting to you.
I took this course last fall, at a time when my mental health was sh*t and I couldn't get the final paper done in time. Michael helped me get a deferred standing; then through the summer, he gave his free time to help me on my paper with guidance, compassion, and encouragement. Tho I failed in the end, he never gave up on me. Nuff said, I think!
Ridiculous amount of work and always justifies it with "its for your own good". If he cut the work he assigns by 25-30% i think it would be a really good course. If you are in stem and have an already heavy course load might be best to avoid this class for your own good.
experimental grading system with no % but compensates with detailed feedback. prof is also super accommodating with extentions but gives a lot of hw. the material is very dry too but he offers a lot of support. avoid wrds150 and take this gpa booster instead
WRDS 150 is a hard class, but Dr. Schandorf teaches it in an engaging way. There is a lot of work, with tons of reading each week. However, the reading leads to very interesting class discussions (class was only once per week too). On every assignment, he gives super clear and detailed feedback. Lots of hard work in this class, but a great prof.
I avoid writing courses like the plague, but I had to do this one and I'm glad I had Michael. This class is challenging and there's no way around that, but if you do the work, give it your best, and communicate w/ him, you will be fine. Gives great feedback and no grades, which I liked. Hard to put grades on such diverse work from all great writers
easy grade, but, it was messed how much work we had to do. it is largely completion based but it is very taxing. do not get caught behind. This would be a really good course to take in the summer.
Excellent professor who provides detailed feedback throughout the term and is a very generous marker. That being said, this course has a huge workload, consisting of a lot of reading. But if you put in the hours, you will succeed.
Great prof, there was a good bit of homework but is mostly completion based. Try not to procrastinate and fall behind, because you'll lose lots of marks.
Michael is by far the best professor I've had in my 2 years at UBC and his section of WRDS 150 was the most interesting course I've taken to date. Since the entire grade is based on participation, you're actually able to focus on the content rather than the grade. I'm planning to take WRDS350 simply because of Michael.
He is a very good prof and is an easy grader as he mostly gives participation/completion marks (but not for all assignments) so you can focus on the material itself rather than the grade. BUT you do have to do the work (and there is a decent amount) so make sure to keep up and don't slack.
In-class engagement is the key for you to achieve high grade in this class, speak as much as possible or provide insightful comments during group discussions. He assigns quite a lot of homework, but he is lenient with the grading of those materials and values more on the learning process. A fantastic Prof!
As an international student, I felt overwhelmed by the size of the university and insignificant compared to my peers. Michael gave me the hope and motivation I needed to succeed. I worked tirelessly and ended up scoring a 98 in the course, my second-highest mark at UBC. Looking back, Michael was the best professor I had at UBC.
Avoid postponing assignments.
STAY AWAY UNLESS IF YOU WANT TO HAVE NO TIME TO DO ANYTHING ELSE ESP IF YOU'RE IN ENGINEERING AND TAKING 6 CLASSES. He makes me hate my life. I would not leave such a bad review unless there was something objectively not okay with his teaching.
Professor Schandorf is fake humble & pretend nice. He is self-righteous. I took a look at his website where he brags students "like" his courses. He might have some good reviews (which I personally disagree with) but overall I notice students complain alot about the amount of work he unloads onto his students.
Students only "like" his course because he is willing to dole out high grades not because they actually like the content of Words 150. All 1st year students at UBC must enroll in mandatory English/Communications course so that's where he gets his "likes."
Schandorf relishes opportunity to leverage power over students by making them run around like hungry chihuahuas hunting for food scraps by making them re-do MANY successive draft proposals under the guise of learning. Real reason: he likes to sit back & smirk while watching students sweat like pigs while compiling another unnecessary draft proposal
Dr. Schandorf was amazing as he is a very fast responder to emails and messages while giving very helpful feedback to improve on assignments. I can see why many of his students have had a hard time in his class but I've noticed that as long as you don't procrastinate, you'll do fine. Everything is completion marks, reducing the stress from quizzes.
He makes me hate my life. I did not know he could make my life a living hell. Lots of empty false encouragement. Unless you're going for Engineering Physics and need a 95, I WARN YOU STAY AWAY. NOT worth crying over if you didn't get him. In fact, it is a blessing not having him as your professor.
HE RUINED MY LIFE WITH HOW UNNECESSARILY DIFFICULT THIS CLASS IS. We are his marionettes and he is the puppet master. He holds the strings tightly. He enjoys his power.
He enjoys English too much and if you don't enjoy English (which you probably don't if you're in 150B), you will absolutely suffer. You will suffer more taking this class with him than taking the same course with another professor.
I have never had a professor make me cry as much as he did. Expect to be frustrated with the amount of time you have to put in. So not worth any high mark you are hoping to receive.
He is amazing, although there is a lot of work to do, but most of them are completion, I don't know why there is a guy who keeps commenting 1.0 for him over 10 times, hilarious, you cannot find a prof who is better than him man.
i just finished his course for term 1 2024. he is an amazing professor and the best i've had so far in my first year. as a science student, you will need to work hard but its all worth it, trust me. don't listen to that one person spamming, they couldn't get their stuff together and by ranting here is there only way to cope:(
If you don't mind wasting your time reading through lots of pointless course reading materials that you will never need to know again & never cared about in the first place and you are really good at pretending to care about class discussions so you can get class participation marks, then this is the perfect class for you. Yawn.
Lots of homework especially in the early months of the semester, however, it does start to thin out near the end of the semester. Overall, a pretty alright prof and an easy marker. Maybe don't take his course if you're in engineering as the workload is quite heavy but it is all completion.
Difficulty is based on the amount of work that had to be completed in this class - it just gets annoying as work is really heavy at the start of the year when you are trying to navigate through everything. Goated prof though, felt like a high school classroom which is hard to come across in uni. Put in the work and you will get high marks.
Amazing prof! Helped me finish my research proposal and is flexible with deadlines, just ask. Lots of work, and I'm definitely not great at writing.
While there is a LOT of work in this class, grades are for completion so you don't have to worry about 'getting it right'. If you keep an open mind and put genuine effort into learning the material, it will be rewarding. This class is really unlikable in the first month, but you do gain a number of important skills that will prepare you for later.
Don't recommend Schandorf if you are pre-med or engineering. U want to focus on science classes because that's what you're actually interested in but Schandorf piles on reading (mundane & uninteresting for alot of science-minded students) & multiple draft revisions that monopolizes all your time. Wants students to prioritize Words 150 over science
Great class
A lot of work, but if you are able to manage yourself you will do good. Goated prof
Seems like he has good intentions but the amount of work is completely unreasonable. Bearing down endless assignments on first year science and eng students that are dealing with university classes for the first time is cruel. Not worth the higher average, just take any other WRDS class and you'll have a decent experience.
Somebody explain why Schandorf's syllabus reads like a novel? U have to re-read his syllabus 4 times before u get all the info. He correlates quality of work with length of work. Longer syllabus = better class. Same thing w/ his research project. Forcing u to re-do draft proposal many times = more student pain = better & more satisfied professor
Self-important pompous professor pontificates endlessly about topics that are enthralling to himself only which is why class participation marks are so important (to force others to engage in his interests). No computer science/chemistry student cares for the esoteric ramblings from Psychology Today magazine that Schandorf assigns as course reading
Unfair & illogical evaluation system.Doesn't matter how good is your research topic & draft proposal. This prof automatically disapproves of the topic & fails your draft proposal many times.U get high marks if willing to run around in circles re-doing work...but then u do badly in other classes just so u can do well in Schandorf class. Not worth it
Secretly knows science ppl who are mandated to enroll in Words 150 don't care about Words compared to science-math classes which are their real interests so he has resorted to bribing students to register in his section by creating a reputation as the "teacher who gives out 98%" WATCH OUT! WARNING: He'll make DAMN sure you suffer dearly for the A++
Irrelevant nonsense & useless busywork. This instructor creates alot of work for the sake of creating alot of work so his class appears relevant. Do all the pointless work & get your mark so you can say you completed this mandatory first year course.
Schandorf's classes should be taken even if you don't need his classes. He teaches you so much that is so relevant to your life and your other classes. His feedback comes around almost instantaneously. He cares about his students and their situations and their opinions. Take his class!!
Term 2 coming to an end. Discovered why Words 150B is mandatory....no reasonable and sane science student would voluntarily subject himself/herself to this time-wasting and comatose inducing coursework so the English dept has to force it upon science students by making this course mandatory.
Best prof ever and his course is extremely easy. It's a lot of busywork but all completion so you honestly don't even have to do it well. And when you have class discussions, just make sure you talk like 3 times and you'll do really well. I finished this course with a 99.7% and I suck at english!! Without the emphasis on grades, I genuinely learned
An absurd amount of work is given, forcing you to spend way too much time on a class that is mandatory for most students. That being said, Schandorf is interesting and tries to teach you important concepts that could help you with future writing. Take this class if you want to be consumed by it from first day of class up until the last few weeks.
If u r thinking of taking Words 150B with Schandorf as a grade booster 'cause u heard he gives out 99%, THINK AGAIN! U will get 99% in Words but at the expense of your APSC 160, Math 100/101, PHYS 157/158 etc marks. He designs his class so U have almost ZERO time to focus on other classes & he doesn't care. Not recommended for ENGINEERING students
Stay away! Learn a few things with Schandorf (nothing that helps with employment though) but might end up with mental health issues afterwards. See no reason why my entire university life should revolve around this ONE single class. Why did workload for his section equal workload of 3-4 other courses combined? Take my warning, escape while you can
This was so awful. His syllabus is 25pgs long. The syllabus is extremely CONFUSING, CONTRADICTORY and CONVOLUTED. For draft proposal, his syllabus says you'll be doing REVISIONS which means: You will be required to re-write FROM SCRATCH your draft proposal a minimum 3 times. Each proposal takes 10-12+ hours.
He has a reputation for giving out extremely high marks (like 95%). But be warned! It comes at the cost of 14hours of (pointless) busywork each week.
I prefer to be getting a proctocolectomy than to be in this class with this instructor. Wake me up when the course is over....
People here are so real, ESCAPE WHILE YOU CAN! This course feels like an experiment on students. No clear grading criteria, course is so disorganized, and the prof is rude when asked for help. Grading seems to be based on the moods of the prof and ta's. I dropped it, definitely not worth the chaos & mental health. AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS!!!!
Schandorf: proposal is the hardest part (no surprise). You'll revise a 1000 word draft 3 to 5 times, even with 4+ classes, work, etc. His lecture on the proposal was redundant, and when I followed part of a sample he gave, I was told that it was wrong. If you value your time, energy, and sanity, don't take any of his classes. I regret it so much!
STAY AWAY IF YOU WANT TO STAY SANE!!!
SO much work. Avoid at all costs.
He claims that this class is easy in the first week, this is completely false. This class is the bane of my existence and the reason for all my stress. There is daily homework (5 days a week almost the entire semester), and nothing you hand in for feedback will be good enough.
Do you hate the satisfaction when you submit work? Do you hate feeling respected? Look no further! In this class, you dont hand a paper in once, you must spend actual months revising it up to 6 times before you can start writing your final paper. He memorizes unfunny jabs to say at people, but somehow is unable to answer a single actual question.
Marks r based on completion and effort, so it is feasible to get a high grade if you put the work in. There are weekly quizzes and assignments, which are extremely time consuming; this was easily my busiest class this term. The research project proposal was the most frustrating part of the entire course. Nice guy though, and he gives good feedback.
Crazy workload for a first year course. Majority of it is just busy work which just adds a lot of noise to the actual big assignment (Research Paper). It includes mandatory group meetings every week, so it runs like a club and a class combined. The amount of feedback is quite demoralizing and time consuming to respond to.
The workload for this class was almost 3x your usual course and this was on of the main things that lead to my severe burnout. However he is the kind of person who seems to genuinely care about his students and is very understanding and highly supportive of your success
Assess Schandorf for psychopathy. Meets criteria.Student/victims are tricked into thinking he's "nice guy" 1.Superficial charm 2.Manipulative behavior (dangles 98% carrot) 3.Egocentric/grandiosity (self-flattery on his website) 4.Disregard for norms(antisocial):runs course 100% differently from dept guidance to cause pain for own self-gratification
Dr. Schandorf is an incredibly understanding professor, but his class was a ridiculous amount of work. Weekly group meetings/assignments, online quizzes, blog comments, class participation, plus dense readings with time-consuming notetaking/summarizing assignments. DO NOT take this course. I should've listened to ratemyprof. Free A but NOT worth it
Take a class with him if you enjoy crying. He can ruin your entire semester.
