He's funny, nice and takes an interest in his students! He makes the material very clear and is very helpful.
He's a great professor, really attractive! He's very knowledgable when it comes to the UN and other topics in IR and he's a fair grader. If class ever gets boring, at least there's a pretty face to look at.
I really didnt have much interest going into the class and didnt interact with Prof. Schroeder until I started coming by his office. He is very helpful, knowledgable, a fair grader, and very attractive. So, even if you have no interest in international relations, you got something to look at in class!
Got me interested in world politics! very knowledgable, funny too. Class time flew by.
Professor Schroeder is one of the best. He explains concepts quickly yet with clarity and a certain level of depth. His PPT slides are excellent and easy to follow. A good lecturer and a fair grader. Definitely recommend Schroeder; he piqued my interest in IR and he's fun to look at!
Prof Schroeder is amazing is very knowledgeable about international organizations. His lectures are engaging and very, very informative. There are very few assignments: weekly readings, a blog post, a policy brief, and exams. Thexams are clear cut. Go to his office hours! He is a great resource and willing to help you outside of the class.
Enjoyed Schroeder's class. Even though it was an 8:55 meeting time, Schroeder kept people interested and made a good number of jokes. He covers a ton of different organizations and tries his best to go over them in detail. Definitely a course worth taking.
Really awesome professor, engaged and interested in the topics he teaches, tries to connect with all the people in the room even if he's lecturing.
Professor Schroeder is hands-down the best lecturer I've had so far at AU. While he only does lectures, they really help me to understand the weekly readings and become more active in the discussion sections.
Very hot!!! All front seats are taken by girls usually. Good jokes. Good lectures that really help to understand the readings. Tests are hard. Take him
Great and interesting lectures that you can miss, but really shouldn't if you want a good grade in the class. Your discussion groups in world politics are probably the most important part of your grade and something you don't want to miss. Do the all the required readings and you'll be fine.
Don't get me wrong, he is nice and funny but he failed me by like 2 points. To make matters worst there was a confusion in my schedule that resulted in me missing many of the classes and he did very little to help solve the issue. I cannot say that he is reasonable and I certainly cannot say he cares for his students.
He's Canadian and proud of it.
Lecture class with 200-300 people, you won't get any one on one time with the professor. However, there is a TA section you go to once a week which has about 20 people. He's not a bad professor but good luck getting to work with him personally for help even if you go to office hours
Schroeder gets a hugely undeserved hype. You hear about how great he is, but he is a poor lecturer (literally puts everyone to sleep), he is super inaccessible and wants to make sure you know it, and assigns 100+ pgs of reading a week. Absolutely no effort to engage with students. If you can get out of getting him for World Politics, do it.
I liked Schroeder, but most of his 105 (world pol) class he brings in guest lecturers who are extremely hit or miss, and most don't teach the material you'll actually be tested on (thought they often have amazing insights). You don't have to do all the readings, but make sure you review before exams. I was lucky and had a great TA for this class.
This professor, despite having more than 250 students in his lecture hall does make an effort to get to know his students, and is extremely kind if you visit his office hours. With World Politics, your grade will depend on your TA, which is why I found the class to be more difficult than others did, but despite that Schroeder's class was brilliant.
He is good. I do not have anything to complain about. Your grade really is determined by your TA I had Matthew Timmerman and he is honestly great. Super reasonable. I would suggest going to class and doing homework. If you do that, you will be totally fine. Since it is such a big lecture it can be tempting to skip but, just don't.
Class depends on TA; however, lecture was very well done
This is kind of a hard rating to do because the class is so big. Prof Schroeder does a good job at what he is supposed to do. However, his course has so many people and is so dense that it loses many people. This is definitely a SIS weed out course as it shows you what is to come in SIS. LOTS of reading
It's a lecture class so don't expect much but he does bring in really amazing speakers to talk about certain topics. Most of the break out discussion TAs are really good too. Easy A if you have the right TA and you show up to most of the lectures and take good notes.
How well you do in this class is based on the TA. This class will also determine whether or not you still want to stay in SIS. There are SO MANY readings. Schroeder is an amazing lecturer and he's very funny and explains things well, but he does not allow laptops and talks too quickly to be able to keep up. But overall, he's a very good professor.
Lectures are easy to skip. Lots, and I mean LOTS, of reading. Attendance/participation and ultimately how you do in the class depends on your TA. I had a bad TA and I think that was one of the reasons I dropped. It's also a good test course to see if IR for you - class is based a lot on IR theory, so if that's not your thing, it can get boring.
Professor Schroeder was an amazing lecturer who was able to keep me fully interested and awake for all his lectures. The guest speakers he brought in were all just as amazing. Loved his world politics lectures.
Schroeder seems like a nice guy (it's a big lecture for 105), but the class itself is garbage and the things you learn are useless. Almost the entire course is spent learning philosophical IR theory that's worthless in the real world. Readings are just jargon. This class should be retitled as a political philosophy course, not an introductory one.
I can't say I recommend him. He is hard to access after class, and he really does not seem to care about his students. His lectures are completely useless, all he does is talk about the same stuff everyday and all the test you do are assigned on readings
the class covers so much and you leave with a broad understanding of world politics and an idea of the gateway you want to take. Schroeder genuinely cares about his students and is super nice and so smart. He brings in professionals from all different fields to talk which is so helpful and interesting. SOLID professor, makes lectures interesting!
Took this class online. The lectures and readings are interesting and a good way to see if SIS is for you. The class is huge, so dont expect Prof Schroeder to know or care about you. The experience and grade depends a lot on your TA.
The guest lectures were amazing, but how much you enjoy the class depends a lot on the TA. I only saw Prof Schroeder in the recorded guest lectures or the Q&As and you never really got a chance to get to know him. I loved the class because of my TA.
Really tough class with lots of reading. I don't know a lot about world politics but now I feel like I have an excellent grasp of a lot of the material we learned. My TA was James Bryan, who was also amazing this semester, as everything was online, and Prof. did not do a big zoom lecture. All lectures were pre-recorded and work was spread out.
I took this class virtually, which meant watching a series of prerecorded lectures before each class. Prof. Schroeder is a good lecturer and you will certainly learn a lot from him. However, this class is graded by 3 papers, a final exam, and a series of mini quizzes that you take every week. Doing well on every assignment is necessary to get an A.
The lectures were seriously amazing. Interesting, informative, and really easy to understand. He's the best option for intro to IR theory IMO, and I highly recommend him. Amazing prep for later classes. However, the discussions were lead by TAs and we didn't get to talk to him often. Still, for SISU-105, I think he's your best option for sure.
such a big class that your experience depends on your TA. My TA was pretty hands-off which made it a negative experience in a gateway class. Lots of reading, notetaking, and lecture work. Too big of a class to actually form meaningful connections. Seems like an outgoing prof but reads to closely from his lecture notes to hold one's attention
There is a lot of reading in this class. Depending on your TA, participation can be graded heavily. The prerecorded lectures are long, so it's hard to focus. There aren't many assignments, and they aren't graded harshly. TAs are very understanding. This is a good class to practice reading academic papers.
I did not meet him in person this semester; his lectures were all online, with TA-led in-person discussion sections. He is a great lecturer and he was available for questions on Q&A sessions, but online lectures and readings made the class a bit hard to focus or understand. But overall great.
Your grade is entirely based off of your TA. Schroeder is good at what he does but that's about it. On the other hand, TA Grace Benson is the best. If you get her, know that she is very kind and understanding but does want you to participate. IMO, lectures/readings aren't necessary, but make sure you understand all the schools of thought to pass.
He just does async lectures but he teaches the material well.
Prof Schroeder only teaches the pre-recorded lectures you are assigned to watch online, he does not grade your work in the course. His lectures are pretty engaging but can sometimes drone on for a while. Unless you attend the optional Q&A sessions with him or meet outside of class, you won't really get to know him.
This class has a huge lecture + a smaller breakout discussion with your TA. Schroeder's lectures were asynchronous but I recommend going to the office hours and getting to know him! The grades consist of a few papers and 1-3 question quizzes over the lecture. The experience comes down to how much you like theory and how good your TA is.
It's a massive asynchronous lecture and then smaller breakout sessions. Your grade depends entirely on your TA. Schroeder is knowledgable, but it's impossible to get to know him without going to office hours, which are at the same time every week and inconveniently fell right in the middle of another of my classes. Didn't interact w/ him once.
Nothing to really say. He is not present in class as it is taught by TA and isn't really accessible. Few homework assignments but they are always confusing. Not a bad class, just not anything to look forward to.
All of the lectures are recorded, and you just show up to discuss with a TA. My TA was amazing and we had a lot of really insightful discussions. I didn't watch any of the lectures, and I never talked to Schroeder, but the class itself was super easy.
Your experience in this class is mostly determined by the TA you have, since Schroeder's portion of the class is limited to his weekly lectures. The lectures are good for an intro course, and he assembled a nice collection of speakers for this semester. Some of the assignments are not totally clear in their expectations, but overall a good class.
Due to it being an introductory class, the lectures were fairly simple and scripted to be easily understood. The professor seems nice and does a good job of laying out the information needed to be known. There is reading and it's best to look over it but overall the class is not too complicated. Plus the guest speakers are great!
The best lecturer. Funny and very approachable. Final is long but take home and open note. He also brings in other professors throughout the semester to discuss their area of expertise. It was great to learn from the experts, but honestly I preferred his lecture style to the professors he brought in. Overall great class and super comprehensive.
Can't say enough good things about Prof. Schroeder. His lectures are excellent. Clear, concise, fascinating. He lays the foundation for the rest of your SIS career. He also hosts guest lecturers who are incredibly knowledgeable and well respected.
great lecturer and really funny. final was very long but pretty easy and take home. show up to discussion section.
Barely ever saw him or heard from him.
Schroeder is a brilliant and compelling lecturer - I enjoyed his aspect of the class a lot. TA's make or break your course however - Babicz is meh. Discussion section was okay but atmosphere very dry and dominated by few know-it-alls. Going into finals and Babicz has only graded one assignment. Take Hallock if possible!!
Great class and professor. Class is split into lecture sections and discussion sections. A fair bit of reading required for an introductory level course, so beware. Discussion sections make or break the class, that's where most of the action happens. Sadly, my TA is departing this year to do her dissertation, but she was great. Overall very good.
His lectures are really not that amazing. Never went to his office hours because there's no reason to. Your TA is everything and you write to their specifications. Mine was great but not all are. Guest lecturers range from interesting to actively hostile toward students. If you're in SIS you have to take this class but don't expect anything great.
Lectures seem intense at first but get easier throughout the course as the guest lecturers take over. You can get by just glancing at the readings before class. No exams, just three 750-word papers and a take-home final. Get along with your TA and you will ace this class. Good intro to all the topics and concentrations within SIS.
Lectures were boring and your TA is who will teach you, not Schroeder.
The SIS goat tbh. Great professor, amazing lectures, super well-organized class materials and assignments. Schroeder doesn't do the grading for SIS105 its done by discussion section leader but the assignments are not demanding or absurdly challenging. I learned a lot, great class, great lecturer!
Professor Schroeder only teaches the lectures and does not handle any grading. Don't expect to interact with him much unless you go to his office hours, but he's often booked. Class is relatively easy but the instructions for the few assignments are vague and not explained. You can get away with not attending the lectures.
SISU-105 was an incredibly engaging course and Prof Schroeder made the content feel interesting and important. His pace and delivery is great and he always added a lengthy question time after each lecture. He is also very kind and welcoming, which was great for a first-semester intro couse.
He doesn't grade anything so just hope you get a good TA grader. His lectures are alright but you recap it during the discussion section anyways so it's not super important you go to them but still go because sometimes he says important stuff. Attendance is not required it is required for the discussion section connected to this class though.
Attendance was not mandatory at the lectures, but it is at your discussions. Your TAs grade your papers/participation; Professor Schroeder taught good lectures, though you can get away with reading the class materials before your discussion section if you really want to. Very organized class structure and grading policies.
Interesting lectures, entertaining professor who is accessible and cooperative.
Professor Schroeder was great! He only gives the lectures in the first third or so of the semester, but the guest lecturers he selects are incredible. Otherwise, how the weekly discussion sections go are determined by the TA (Hartwell was wonderful). I went to Dr. Schroeder's office hours twice and he's very approachable and helpful!
Super nice guy. Be sure to show up to all the lectures, do the readings, and answer some questions in class. He's also very approachable if you have any questions after the lecture also. Would recommend.
Not much to say since he only gave lectures for the first 3 weeks and was less involved in the discussion sections/assignment grading than our TAs, but great and well-articulated speaker, super organized, and selects great guest lecturers. A classic for SIS freshmen
if u have him for 105, he just does lectures. your discussion session TA is more important as they do the grading and thats where you have convos about the readings. he's fine nothing special tho
Schroeder only gives lectures for like the first 5 weeks of the course before he brings in guest lecturers from across SIS. He himself is very engaging and I wish he taught more himself. Your TA for discussion is way more important to your success in the class than he is.
Really good lectures. Instructions for assignments are very clear. I've learned a lot in this class. Love at the end of every lecture he says "go do something else" he eats that up every time.
Absolute king. Great lecturing and very caring. Your TA's will do most of the grading, so go to class and get to know them.
I do love prof. schroeder and find the content of the lectures to be compelling, but I wasn't too motivated by his lecturing or intrested when he was teaching. guest lectureres are fascinating tho. The TA's grade your things, do your work on time, and get to know the TA's. Also participate in your discussion section, that matters a lot in ur grade
He is a good professor, but relies on outside faculty to lecture instead. I did not feel like he did much in the second half of the semester and the TAs did the most amount of work. He was very friendly at the beginning of each lecture and would often bring cookies for class.
This class really depends on who you have as a TA. Prof Schroeder only lectures once a week and the other class is your TA section and all work is graded by them. Personally, I didn't go to the lectures and just attended TA section. I still really enjoyed the class and didn't find ti hard to follow. You can get all the info from the readings.
As others have said, the TA is what really matters for this class. Professor Schroeder gave great, engaging lectures and had cool guests come in but we didn't really interact with him otherwise. Good intro to international relations class.
The RMP doesnt rlly matter for 105, as he really only handles the first 4-5 lectures, so its really the TA and guest lecturers that will make/break the class. Had one office hour w him and he was annoyed for some reason, but every other interaction with him he was super chill, definitely a good first class for SIS
You don't have to go to the lectures to understand the content because the TA's discussion session reviews everything that the lecture covered. There were only 3 assignments and the rest of your grade is participation and attendance to the discussion section. The 3 assignments were 750-800 words and didn't have a ton of research.
This class is way too hard for a 100 level. The prompts for assignments are lengthy, filled with word jargon and impossible to understand. The assignments overcomplicate concepts that could be simple. Schroeder is a positive person but this class should be remodeled. My TA graded harsh, I would've learned more with a simpler conveying of concepts,
Prof. Schroeder handles the first few lectures before stepping back for guest speakers, which feels disjointed. He's funny and engaging, but the TA is essentially your real teacher, and grading depends on them. Mine was lenient, but others weren't. The class introduces helpful SIS tools but needs restructuring; you could easily skip most lectures.
I loved Professor Schroeder so much! He is so funny and makes every lecture entertaining. You don't really interact with him much throughout the semester but when you do, he's very kind and understanding.
this class 100% depends on your TA, not really on Professor Schroeder. But he was super nice and tried to make a super boring class more fun. Despite his best efforts, the lectures are still super boring so prepare yourself.
How difficult grading is in this class is really based on the TA you have, but Prof Schroeder is a really engaging lecturer, who makes what could be boring material pretty interesting. He's very good at explaining complex concepts simply. However, he only lectures for half the class and then it's guest lecturers.
Professor Schroeder is a genuine nice caring professor. He does care about his students and hopes for them to do well. While his classes are lecture based after about 2 hours they can get stale and tiring. The readings every week are tiresome and sometimes unneeded. The grading is tough for all, it's believed that getting above an A- is impossible.
This was Prof. Schroeder's 1st seminar class in over a decade, and he came in well-prepared and passionate about the topic. The 4 assignments, including a podcast, were creative and built well on each other. While the class was often lecture-heavy and felt tedious, he balanced that with humor, support, and thoughtful feedback. He's a tough grader.
Greatly dependent on who your TA is, but Prof. Schroeder is alright. Incorporates relatively recent events, but it feels like he's taught the class so often it's lost meaning. Reading can be a lot, especially towards the end. Guest speakers vary wildly in quality. My TA was Ariana Schmidt, who was kind and knowledgeable but a bit of a stickler.
Great professor. The pace of the lectures depends on the students in your class and the number of questions they ask. Discussion sections and lectures can get very political, so if you are not big on politics, I would not recommend this class. If you need to reach him out of class, he will most likely tell you to schedule office hours with him.
He's alright- nothing crazy. His lectures were good and now we've gotten guest speakers who are rly a hit or miss. Hes not that hard-rly depends on your TA. Hes super sweet if you go to his office hours and rly cares about his students. Makes lots of jokes.
Professor Schroeder is such a good person. I took a tour of the SIS building at the beginning of the semester and he was very genuine. You do have to attend the lecture to scan a QR code at the beginning of each class. This class gave me a good idea of what thematic gate way I wanted to chose as well as what region I was interested in.
When Professor Schroeder teaches the lectures, they are very well presented and the concepts are easy to follow, but unfortunately most of the course is taught by guest lecturers who are mostly terrible. Many of the TAs are also very harsh graders who give little to no feedback. I would like to take professor Schroeder again in a different class.
Schroeder is cool, the lectures are huge and attendance isn't mandatory, the TA sessions are mandatory and dictate your grade so that's hit or miss/dependent on the TA you get. The big lectures are interesting and introduce a lot of foundational stuff so you can get a lot from them if you choose to attend but can likely slide by without.
Schroeder is consistently a good lecturer and although he can seem a little tough, he's actually really sweet and makes an effort to get to know his students. 106 consists of a few papers, a group podcast, and an oral exam. All the work is very doable and the material is interesting.
