By far the worst teacher I have ever had. He babbles about nothing and it doesn't relate to his class. His grades consist of 2 essays and attendance(even though he tells you in the beginning that it doesn't count). He gives D's out like candy.

Avoid at all costs. His tests consist of definitions that you must memorize word for word (and if you get one work out of play/wrong, he marks the whole thing wrong). Talks about redundant topics, complains about everything and praises nothing. Terrible.

this was the hardest class at occ. i havent failed a single class in my life and i got an F in his class. terrible!!!!his test are really hard and his extra credit is impossible to recieve credit on.

He is a smart one. loves ducks, tests are extremely hard but once u get ur material down, u can do it! be sure to do all extra credit which it will help cover ur butt for all the test u bombed.

He is awful, he needs to just retire. He uses alot of profane languange and laughs about it. He doesn't teach well but is very smart. I would not recommend him at all.

I actually like this professor because he is a true philosopher. He is very intelligent and gives out 2 essays a sem. and no HW. Only stupid people would get D's on his essays because to get a minimum of a C all you have to do is answer his question. People take this teacher for granted.

worst teacher i've ever had! he is too smart to teach a 100 level class. he uses vobabulary that is over everyone's level so no one understands what he is talking about. very frustrating and HORRIBLE!

I have yet to take him for phil 150, but phil 100 was pretty easy. Just kick back and talk about issues. He's kinda vulgar, but funny. Open minded. Class based on TWO essays. I did them both the night before (not well written) and got a B in the class. you'd have to try hard to fail, but that's me.

Hes very interesting/intellegent, but hardly gives students a chance to voice their opinions w/out shuting them down right away. Its pretty easy to get a B, but only if u have almost perfect attendance. Extremely hard to get an A. "I very rarely find students worthy of giving A's to." Hes HILLARIUS

Has issues with believing in God. The class is pretty boring,but easy to pass. All you have to do, is go to class, and two essays. NO HW, NO TESTS. He is a little bit bulgar, but very nice. At the beggining he might not seem approchable, but once you talk to him, he is very nice.

I hate this man, very profane and narrow minded. Not reasonable at all on make ups, had to go to dept. head to take final. Says his language is "classic" but it's just unclear (this coming from an English major who loves Shakespeare) Won't learn anything useful, test are very confusing, no matter how well you know the material, they're still hard.

Funny teacher, makes you think a lot. If you don't have an open mind, don't come to this class. I got an A and I didn't attend class that much. Just listen to his materials, practice from the book, and memorize the definitions word for word. His extra credit is very time consuming, but it helps.

I have never seen such a egotistical, never wrong, dont question him, kind of man. If you want to take a class that lets you sit there and listen to CRAZY babbling about drugs, guns, and attacks on religion. Take this class. It was fun to listen to him. He made me appreciate my beliefs and to solidify them.

I have never in my history of schooling had to deal with such an arrogant, rude and unprofessional professor. He uses profanity, singles out students to embarrass them. If you want to pass with anything better then a D, DO NOT take this class. Out of our class of 40 there were 6 C's; the rest, all 34 of us got D's. Why is this guy still teaching???

Wow this guy is amazing. He totaly changed the way i think about life. The modern day Socratiset. He grades his essays kind of tough but lets you rewrite them and tells you what needs improving. He asks analysis of yourself and your ways, if you can't handle that don't take his class. I've found more of myself because of this class.

If you have read the comments below me about him it is all true. his lectures are boring and hard to understand and goes off topic all the time loves to use profanity. I went into the final week of class with a 7% however I did the extra credit and did well on the final i receive an A. so if you have a bad grade at the end of semster don't sweat!

One of the most erudite intellectuals on campus. He uses sophisticated polysyllabic words like it's nobody's business. He has a great sense of humor. One caveat though, he is extremely unsympathetic to the Christian view -- something I find highly unpalatable. Be sure to avail yourself of his extra credit assignment.

I just wrote an A paper. (according to my tutor) and Mr. Scott gave it a D. I like him and he is nice but he grades very hard thats all i have to say. He IS clear and IS helpfull, just a hard grader.

I had a great deal of trouble following him during the lectures, and wound up taking an average of 4 pgs of notes per day. It's nearly impossible to retain much of that info when you're writing like a speed demon, and, unfortunately, he doesn't care. He also appears to grade the tests according to what kind of mood he's in that day.

if you are in college for the right reasons then you should not have a problem with this class. i got a B and really didnt get a damn thing he was saying. the readings were kinda interesting. you only have 2 essays to write and i could have honestly wrote them w/o going to half the class.

I aced my first exam, did poorly on the second (a high D) and apparently quite poorly on the final. He gave us three exams all semester and no homework. I received an 'F' in the course.

Scott was hard to follow, since he talked as much about himself & his pets as he did about philosophy (the "my rats need beer," comment came at least twice per week). He also boasts about how our school admin has tried unsuccessfully to get rid of him. I've got a good idea why having sat thru his course, and would only recommend him to masochists.

Obviously someone is terrorizing his reputation on this site. He is a great teacher. If you are not seriously interested in philosophy or really learning about logic and reasoning then this class is not for you. He loves his job and is a nice guy. Stop crying already!

Scott is a very smart guy. His ability to recite definitions off the top of his head is impressive. He's not a bad teacher either. His problem is that he requires you to learn his definitions WORD FOR WORD, rather than understanding the concepts, and for being so against competetive capitalist ideals, he sure gets pissed off during light debate.

The comments before me are a mixed bag... Yes he is vulgar and frequently strays from topic, but he is NOT difficult to understand. His vocabulary is, gasp, college level. However, he requires test answers to be verbatim to his definition, not just to show understanding. I find this unreasonable, and enough to recommend AGAINST taking him.

I have to say...This was the worst class I have ever taken. I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. To pass the class you must memorize definition verbatim, if you are one word off you don't get credit. I can't stress it enough... He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Avoid this teacher like the black plague.

He is pedantic,cantankerous, obscene,and downright insufferable.Everything you'd want in a philosophy prof! He is probably the most intelligent man Ive encountered in quite some time.The knowledge he provides you is invaluable.It helps to have a sense of humor and a genuine interest in the material to appreciate this class in its entirety.Take him.

HE IS AWFUL. So he only gives two essays and no homework apart from reading, but he also has a narrow viewpoint which corresponds exactly to a backwards US communist group. I got the highest score on the midterm essay (a C) in the class and a C overall-I missed due to pneumonia. He also says Plato and Socrates were straight-hilarious and wrong.

I came out of my way to come here and help you guys stay away from this man. He failed the majority of essay in our class. Now I have to drop. Take his class if you don't believe me and if you like his teaching style, great, more power to you! It just wasn't for me...or anyone else in my class.

horrible! only two essays and everyone in the class got Ds! i dropped the class because there was no way i would have passed! he gave a pop quiz, because no one had done the reading, that was worth 50% of an essay. STAY AWAY!

He locks you out of test if your late, gets mad if you ask questions, he does not allocate is time properly. He pushed Chapter 4 into 1 1/2 weeks and made us take a finial test primarily on chapter 4. The man is a poor example of a teacher and should reconsider his sad existence. All he talks about are his LSD trips and he uses alot of profanity.

Scott loves himself, and his own ways of thinking. He doesn't really take into thought what you're argument is. But don't get me wrong, he loves a good argument. Some would even walk out of the class because they got too frustrated with him. I found it quite hilarious at times He lets you know he loved LSD in his past. Don't understand how i passed

having some philosophy background was helpful.Material is difficult if you make it so, approach the class like a math class and you'll do fine. He is a bit strange, entertaining though. Go to class, mathematize the words, and have an open mind, it was a great class- I got a lot out of it!I learned a lot!!

If you are not interested in philosophy, you should not take this class! He is hard to follow, his lectures don't make sense, he is not very helpful and the only right way of thinking, is his way of thinking. He thinks that he is God and make sure you write all of his definitions verbatim, or you will not pass his tests. Don't take this class!!

Its not difficult to get a good grade in this class. He offers an easy but time-consuming extra credit assignment at the end of the semester that can lift your grade from a C to an A. He is very helpful during his office hours. He has a very deep understanding of logic. Just show up, pay attention, and read your notes and book. Easy A.

This professor is horrible! He does not use email, he getts all bent out of shape when you disagree with him, and he continues to be convinced he is the only right person in the room unless you agree with him! The final was on the material covered over the last week and a half of class! He is horrible!

Professor angers quite easily, and gets very combative when you don't agree with him. Speaks often of things that are not appropriate. He gave everyone that I asked a D for lack of participation but became angry when anyone made comments.

I think anyone who gives this teacher a bad comment is just one of those loud students that he put in their place. I was gonna drop because of the comments on here, but he is really a nice guy. Just pay attention and study. Memorize definitions, it's not that hard. If you miss class, you miss material. That simple. Interesting class.

THE MOST USELESS TEACHER IN THE WORLD. The only right answers are whatever comes out of his mouth. He frequently talks about unnecessary off- topic things and gets angry if you disagree with him. This professor in mid lecture will start talking about useless unrelated topics about his personal life. He would often tell the class about his drug abusing daugher,how his son wont talk to him,& his mistakes as a father. He gets mad when people ask questions and makes them feel like a fool because they dont understand what hes trying to convey.

This class is pretty easy if you take it with someone else, he does not admit his own mistakes when he does grades wrong and argues for no reason, i have no respect for this man at all what so ever, i did the work and helped student in his class and ended up with a B because he said i did not turn in some of the work then argued with me.

this professor was far the worst teacher i have ever had in my entire life. i have had worse and still able to pass with c in the classes. this teacher is worthless he gave me a F and i was their everyday did the extra credit never missed and still didnt pass me. the material he teaches is hard. i dont recommend to anyone!!! stay away take English.

This gentlemen without a doubt stimulates your thought process. Although, his ability to convey the information required to pass his class with an A is absent. He unfortunately is so upset with his childhood and the government that he brings it to class. His rational discourse is a fallacy because his teaching style does not reflect his character.

Ok so not as bad as people say he is. There's 4 test(last semester only 3 bc he cancelled 1). First test worth 11 points. second worth 25 and final was 50ish...BUT theres extra credit wich can REALLY help you so do it(even if you don't understand it like me!) oh and attendance is CRUCIAL to your grade too...good luck!

Today he walked out of our classroom and threatened us with a test. 90% of what he talks about is not on the test. He goes on a tangent everyday of class, and is VERY easily angered. Today was a great example of his anger. I suggest to not take his class.

Prof Scott is an either "you love him, or you hate him" kinda guy. Now he does swear in class and often goes off topic for long periods of time, he is a good teacher as long as you work at it. He can be hard to understand, but that's why you ask questions. I'm certain that most of these comments are from people who never said a word to him in class

Then you have an extra cred option that takes 8-12 hrs &if u miss 1 step you get no points.Thats what happened to me. Worst professor I have had. Not because of his politics, or his swearing, or any of those complaints others have made, but because he is not a teacher and does not teach. He is not interested in helping students learn, he is interested in how he can use his classroom and his position as professor to boost his ego. Period.

Not the greatest teacher. Memorize his definitions and his tests are easy. There is a large extra credit project that has more points than the first 2 tests put together. And it is actually pretty easy too, just time consuming. Several of us did it during class. He isn't the greatest at lecturing, but the class itself isn't that bad.

Professor Scott was really interesting to take. His digressions really had some kick behind them. He kept most tangents close to the subject, but he would veer off. He wasn't the clearest teacher, nor did he use the best use of time. He wasn't bad, nor was he impossible, and if you're willing to work you can get a good grade.

Got an A. Attending every lecture is a must. He goes through a lot of samples and definitions in one class. Nail these two down and you should have a decent score. Extra credit is time consuming but easy and it boosts up grades by A LOT. Only take him if you're willing to put in work and attend lectures, otherwise you can easily get lost and fail.

This guy doesnt know how to teach. He went on and on about the type of women he would like to meet and talks about his gun collections...wasting student time and money. Not sure why OCC still keep him around. He is not a good representative to OCC. Please let him go and save us the headache. Most unprofessional professor I've met.

Mike Scott is hilarious, but his methods of teaching are questionable. He spends a lot of time distracted talking about other subjects. The extra credit is basically worth more than all the tests combined, or close to that number. If given the chance, DO the extra credit! It's sooo worth it. Got me an easy A.
