very arrogant,textbook sucked,quizzes sucked,lectures sucked,learned a lot about film,but the course is called MEDIA ARTS I,not film I.and i was not a film major,so i was not happy w/ this course.tough teacher to please.
he talks like the tests are going to be so hard but then they're really easy as long as you follow the study guide. most laid back professor either. the paper is a **** though but the classes are fun and his attitude is pretty funny. very opinionated
Coolest teacher ever. Totally knows what he's talking about. Very witty in lecture, doesn't get boring. Ask for help and you'll get it. Tests are ok as long as you study. Again, coolest teacher ever...
Really terrific! knowledgeable and very funny, lectures were always made interesting, i haven't even missed 1 class this semester, and i tried really hard to get him two semesters in a row. I respect him so much that i worked extra hard!! Love him!!
A lot of the documentaries were depressing and he is a hard grader and has high standards. However, he's a real character, deceivingly laid back and very amusing to listen to. And hot..for the texas drawl alone.
Class was very interesting but tests were super tough. He was a very helpful instructor and met with me to help me on my paper. I did learn a lot from his class, but tests were super hard even though I studied a lot.
whenever i think michael selig, i think nanook of the north.
Selig is in the handful of the best teachers at Emerson. He definitely knows his stuff, has a very good dry sense of humor (teaches comedy writing course) and you will do fine if you just listen, take notes, and COMPLETE THE STUDY GUIDE AS HE TELLS YOU.
i lost all respect for him when he publicly denounced organized religion in one his lectures, calling it a "death wish" to be a part of one. how does something like that come up in a media class anyhow? his tests and papers were hard.
I am in love with Michael Selig. In my opinion, he is the best professor at Emerson College, hands down. You learn a lot, he's very funny, and I never wanted to skip a class.
I wrote 35 pages of note based on his study guide for a test and i got a 60 on that test!
Knows his stuff. Keeps things interesting and (relatively) lively.
For the girl (or guy) who said they were in love with Micheal: Hands off, he's mine!
Awesome guy and teacher. I question the helpfulness of the paper, but my understanding is he doesn't assign that anymore. I learned a lot but was never stressed about the work. Classtime wasn't too bad for a lecture course, either.
If you pay attention in class, take notes, and do a thorough job on the study guide (and then study it well), it's an easy A. If you're bad at taking tests, then the class might be harder. Overall, he was very funny and very informative. Great class.
tests are hard....unclear, but if u really bust ur butt u can get a good grade.....he can be annoying with his corny jokes. and just annoying in general- he always seemed pre-occupied
very easy...gives you study guides for tests. Dry sense of humor-gets distracted easily during class. Very laid back and understanding. easy mult-choice tests, no papers, easy to skip class, doesn't take attendance.
It's not hard, but I had to work to get a good grade. He knows a lot on the topic and is VERY helpful. He has always taken time to discuss my grade with me or look over a paper.
If yo upay attention and take notes, It's pretty easy. Selig is also very accessible and helpful.
It was History of the Documentary and it was a great class. Selig is awesome and I agree with the girl (or guy) who is in love with him. He reminds me of Larry David for some reason. Anyway, great class -- you work your ass off but it pays off in the end.
the tests are not on what he teaches! i learned a lot, but my grade will not reflect it. it doesnt really matter how much you study, because his tests are random and ridiculous. while he says you dont need to know specifics, you do.
awesome guy, very accesible and willing to talk to students during non-office hours, shows concern for students, great dry sense of humor, class is easy if you take notes/do the study guide/study. only three tests per. semester.
SOOOOOOOOOOO EASY! do the study guide and you'll get an A. lectures at times are boring and some of the movies he shows put you to sleep. but overall this guy knows his stuff and is an easy A
what a cutie pie..where's the pepper people??
Great Guy!!
I liked Seilig just in general as a person. He was awesome. When I'd see him in the Dinning Hal he'd say hi and asked how my schedule was and stuff. He seems like he'd be good to work with on a film. He really knows his stuff and he's very easy to talk to. Funny too. He's definately an Ace!
He's kind of an ****. Do the reading and you'll ace his class.
One of the best professors I've had. He's also written an excellent textbook, which I have used as a reference in several other classes. A good, friendly guy, and an excellent lecturer.
Selig is H-O-T....and he knows everything about every movie. Fun!

Selig made learning History of Media Arts interesting. Lots of great information and he gives notes in a well formatted way. Easily the best notes I took at Emerson. A bit hard, but hey, it's Emerson - how hard can it be? Take his class and you won't go wrong.
The coolest class freshman year. Learned a lot, and he's totally cool. If you want to be a better filmmaker (as most Emerson kids could be) then take this class. It puts the whole world in perspective.
Showed up late or not at all for personal conferences, tests not subjective, mean-spirited at times. Stick with Eric Shaefer!
great prof, a little more difficult that most but very fair, he just happens to ask students to actually put effort into their papers, most students call this hard, but really its what you should always be doing. When i finally got a good grade on one of his papers i felt very rewarded.
Took film history courses when he was teaching at UVM. Favorite professor. Can't say enough about him. Hope he's doing well.
funny guy, definitely has a chip on his shoulder though..i'm guessing it might be b/c he wants to be making films instead of teaching film? who knows...his class was easy and he's clear on what he wants out of youplus he looks like steve spielberg...taking a class w/ his wife, however, is a nightmare...one of the most difficult and bitter teachers
Most bitterly sarcastic teacher I've ever had, but there's something appealing about it- he's honest... doesn't try to hide it. Really smart, helpful and overall a good guy.
He was as boring as he could be, and showed whole films that were even more boring than that. It's one thing to show us examples, but he would show entire films to talk about a 10 second clip within it. Everything he said could have been condensed into a few classes, but somehow its going to take 14 weeks. Bring coffee or bring a pillow.
Pretty straightforward yet interesting class. No essays, only 3 tests. Basically, if you really actually study, using the textbooks and all, you'll be fine. You can sleep through all of the film screenings, even, as long as you study before the tests. Don't sleep, though; the films tend to be good. He is very clear, and witty in a cute way.
Interesting, super-educated guy. hmmm, it was a good class, he taught me different ways of seeing comedy. He hinged on certain concepts a little too much for me, but still good.
If you don't care about history of TV and radio, this class will be extremely long and boring. If you do care, Selig probably knows more about the subject than most people on earth. He's condescending at times, and doesn't care much for his students, but overall he's a good guy. Your grade is based on 4 exams and little else.
Boring, always bring coffee. It was nice only having 3 exams though.
If you pay attention in class, show up for screenings and do the reading, you'll be fine. 3 tests, all multiple choice, and comprehensive study guides. He is also very patient with questions about the topic and is always willing to stay after class to answer student questions.
He wrote the class and is extremely knowledgeable. He knows exactly what he's talking about when he's talking about things that are in the text and even things that aren't. I think he's a funny guy and will always answer a question during a lecture if you have one. Highly recommended if you want to learn something about film/tv/radio history.
I took his History of Media Arts I class. It was great. Just do the readings and even if you don't you can use his study guides and you will do just fine in the class.
Nice guy, very smart. You can tell this guy knows his stuff, which kinda scares me with our paper coming up, i dont think he'll fall for bs. He gives you a in depth study guide for the exams, which i dont understand why every teacher in the world does not. Recomend him for sure
You can tell he's taught the class for too long because it's engrained in his speech and he seems bored with the information. Everything is presented on a sad-looking powerpoint. He seems like a nice guy in class, but he tends to like students who agree with his pessimistic political views. He will never learn your name, or be kind if you need help
Selig knows his stuff. This class was not easy, but if you show up, take good notes and do the study guides, you'll do fine. It took me about a week to warm up to him, but he is quite funny in a dry sarcastic way. VM100 was a big class, and he won't reach out to you, but go to his office hours if you need help. Plus, he looks like Billy Joel.
I definitely wasn't too keen on him at first, but his dry humor eventually grew on me. If you complete the study guides like he tells you, you'll do fine. Just be prepared to read quite a bit. Bonus: he kind of looks like Steven Spielburg.
He never learned my name but still recognizes me 2 years later. Heard he says the same thing word for word from year to year. Got a B but didnt study. Dislikes the Graduate and only takes attendance on the screening days or when too many people missing. Screenings are good nap time, his final includes only questions from the 3 tests. Good class
Good teacher. Knows his stuff. You really gotta show up to class to do well. My only annoyance: we get a study guide with 50-100 terms but there are only like 30 random questions on the test. So you have to memorize like 100 terms only to be tested on 30 of them.
You'll actually learn in his class, and if you like the subjects he teaches it's fun. He's nice and knows the material he's teaching. Just show up to class and do the work, you'll get an A. Tip: Mention Galaxy Quest.
If you actually want to learn film history, take it with this guy. He's no nonsense, goes straight to the point and will give you a broad and wide knowledge of film and its content. He's a hard grader, but will really ingrain the ideas into your head. Highly recommended. Great teacher.
HMA with Selig is not the kind of class you want to try faking your way through. His lessons are fairly heavy but not a waste of time by any means. While Selig makes the class pretty tough, he also makes them interesting (like with hilarious commentary). He has a high standard for students but will listen if you're having trouble.
Selig is a good teacher and knows what he is talking about. Very smart and helpful. His class can be a little slow because it is a lecture, but he does show video clips to break it up. You do not want to miss class because the tests are made up of half notes and half book material. As long as you pay attention and prepare for the tests, you're good
Enjoyable class. A lot to learn from.
I have had better professors. He makes you memorize all these facts and half of them are useless. I really did not like him. Half of the things on the study guide was not even on the test. I don't recommend him.
Very hard teacher. I studied two weeks in advance for every exam and barely passed. His powerpoint slides are not well organized, and he expects you to write what is on the slides while taking notes on what he says. I have put more work into this class than anything else. Unless you are an incredible test taker, and like theory, I would avoid him.
If you're not a good test taker, don't take his class. Four tests make up your entire grade, so you cant make up for a bad grade with homework or essays. He gives you 100 terms to know for each test of only 40 questions. I went to his office hours and that didn't help. I put the most work into this class and only got a C+, I am usually an A student
Prof. Selig makes no effort to help you understand the material. His ppts are very unclear and disorganized, and the lectures are LONG - he sometimes makes you stay past the end of class. The screenings are interesting, and I found his commentary during films to be helpful. But if you can, try to take this class with a different prof.
Boring and not very useful.
Selig is a good teacher who is super knowledgable about his subject. If you put the work into this class (e.g. read the book, take notes, and go to the screenings like he says) you will do fine. Four tests make up the entire grade so definitely do not slack. I really enjoy this class, but I think I'm one of the few.
If you didn't drink coffee before class, good luck sitting through this one. His power points are terrible, he's incredibly boring, and just not a good professor. Switch classes if you get him.
Selig's solid. Lectures do feel real long sometimes, but you really learn a lot - he knows his stuff, and he explains it all really well. Show up to class, take good notes (don't just copy the Powerpoint), fill out the study guide, and you'll do fine. You don't really need to do the textbook readings; I recommend finding a PDF of it and using CTRLF
Michael IS Larry David in disguise with his many funny commentaries and remarks. As much as he livens up his lectures, he is a vicious grader. He is a bit intimidating in class, but really knowledgeable and relaxed at his office, seek him there. But there will be a line waiting for him for him to clarify...
I really enjoyed Selig's class. He has a great voice for lecturing so I really enjoyed sitting through and listening to his lectures. He is very knowledgeable about his material and explains the information clearly. He only gives 4 exams the whole semester and you really have to study for them but it's all multiple choice. Recommended!
Selig in my freshman year. He was a nightmare. Nice enough in class but when I went to see him when I was struggling in his class,he couldn't care less. Classic example of "those who can't do". Very full of himself. He should find a new profession. I wouldn't go near this guy.
Professor Selig is unclear with what he expects for essays. He'll tear your essays apart but won't explain how to improve them. His tests consist of writing three essays and multiple choice, a little too much. We watch a movie each week but then he expects you to take the class seriously. He's a tough grader when it comes to papers
Selig is a normal college professor, don't look for any sympathy from him he's just not one of those teachers and he won't pretend to try to learn your name. He's sarcastic/rude depending on the day. I didn't do any reading and I was fine, just look at the study guide. If you want to skip the viewing just show up and sign your name at the end.
I really like Selig as a person. But, i wish I never took this class. He "lectures" but its hard to tell what he wants us to know and whats just random stuff he's saying. He grades papers harder than any teacher I've ever had. I am a straight A student and right now Im struggling to keep a C in this class. And his final is a lot for only 90 min!
This class is easy if you take notes and study for the tests. A lot of the time I didn't even need the book to study. There are a few quizlets online that helped. Keep the book for the next class however. He doesn't necessarily take attendance so you can get away with skipping a few classes without a problem.
Your grade is made up entirely of tests and it is mostly lecture based--don't bother reading the textbook. It doesn't really help. Other people say that Selig is hard, but to get an A, all you have to do is pay attention during class and do his study guide for the test. I don't know, I felt like I learned a lot during this course.
This class was so easy. Just show up and take some notes. You don't even have to pay attention for most of the class. For the tests just follow the study guide. If you can't find something in your notes then a lot of the study guides can be found on quizlet. You barely use the book but it can be helpful at times if you can't find a term
Just not a class I enjoyed at all I thought he was funny at times but you have to pay attention to do well on the tests and I recommend reading the text too
Professor Selig was an amazing speaker and really helped to keep the class captivating, despite the length and lack of back-and-forth, as there were so many students. Because of this, he was able to make the class feel personal, wether or not one was to raise their hand.
Michael Selig changed my life.
Selig tells dad jokes that makes you appreciate your own dad, and hell get salty if you wont laugh but the class is good. Know how to take good notes, because the study guide is just terms and concepts you should know and the tests are super specific (who directed this, when did this happen, etc.) but passable if you know what youre doing.
I took his Vietnam in Cinema class. He's a very nice guy and he knows his stuff. You get to watch a lot of bad Vietnam war movies and them. He's a tough grader but he's very fair. If you really work for it he'll give you a good grade. All of his work is also due at the end of the semester so don't procrastinate and do it all last minute.
I appreciate his self awareness and the energy he gives his otherwise entirely lecture driven course. I felt he made it clear what we needed to know and was very organized
I read reviews and havent read anything about this, but he seemed to have snapped This past election and goes on political rants during class. He liberal view is an extreme one that comes off extremely rude. Didnt have anything to do with lecture topics. I would prefer to leave politics out of this
I took History of Media Arts 1 and 2 with this professor, as well as Western Cinema. I never had a pleasant experience working with this man. LECTURE HEAVY, STRICT AGAINST LAPTOPS, and VERY TOUGH ESSAY ASSIGNMENTS. He assigned 3 major papers- graded harshly- and offered VERY FEW other grading opportunities. I DO NOT RECOMMEND
He's fine as a teacher. He gives you information through presentation format, you write down the concepts he elaborates on. There's quizlets online that will help with memorizing terminology, and as long as you can remember the big ideas you'll do fine. Never met with him for help though, so no promises there.
He doesn't bother taking attendance but if you want to do well on the four tests (what this class is graded on), you should show up to class. He gives study guides before each test and they take a while to complete but once you do, you're pretty set for the test. A textbook is required but I got a PDF for $7 online and never read it.
I liked this class and it wasn't too hard. As long as you show up and take notes you'll be okay. The only thing that he grades are your tests. He doesn't take attendance in class, but he does have you write down that you went to the screenings. He does go off on random political rants and if you don't have liberal views get ready to be offended.
Worst professor I've had. Entire grade is made up of 4 tests, 2 of which are within one week of each other (test 3 and the final). Lectures are incredibly boring and he goes off on irrelevant rants. Avoid him if possible.
20 years ago , he had a reputation for being a tough professor. I also understood he knew his stuff and was a fair grader if you put in effort. His class is likely the only reason I watched several of the classics or understand why they matter in the grand scheme of history, and taught me the concept of diegesis. Thank you for great mentorship!
Never did a rate my prof before because I've never had a professor as bad as Selig. The man just talks and talks about nothing for hours, has no clear concept of the learning material or how to present it to students, and is extremely passive aggressive.
