Excellent prof and extremely helpful. Make sure you attend classes and take diligent notes because the exams are strictly on his lectures. Also, always read the supplementary readings, he tests on those frequently.
Excellent Professor! Extremely helpful and he is really interested in the subject. Make sure you attend class and read the supplement readings.Highly recommend this professor.
really funny and really interesting, makes youwant to go to class, but his exams are relatively difficult
Exceptionally motivated so early in the morning for an 8am class. I love his enthusiasm and passion for theory and its application. I really enjoyed his class.
Excellent class. Excellent prof.
Agree with others. I left his class very informed on criminal justice.
I appreciate mike using current and relevant examples to explain methods. I wish he taught me stats.
Fantastic Prof! Fantastic class!
The paper was next to impossible but the experience of writing it and applying what i knew made this class my favourite. Dr. Seredycz has become my fav teacher at macewan. Tough class tho.
Expect lots of readings and content innthe class. You have to apply everything so the exams r pretty tough. I learned a lot but there is a ton of material to remember. Wish Mike would actually give another exam so we have to know less chapters for each.
Toughest class I've taken at GMU but worth every second. Mike runs a pretty informal class so you feel comfortable in talking. His exams are hard so take lots of notes. Quizzes are easy if you've read all of the supplemental readings he puts on BB. So far my fav teacher. He made me work hard for my grade.
I'd recommend any of Mike's classes.
This was an excellent class. I never expected statistics to be both enjoyable and useful. I learned a significant amount and yes, I kept all my notes. If Mike can teach this, he can teach anything.
Good class. If you go to class and take notes, you will do well on his metablock assignment and exams.
Mike is great, his classes are informal which allows for lots of class participation. Take lots of notes because his exams are based on lecture material not textbook. If you need help understanding something or want to talk out your exam he is available and willing. really approachable
Dr. Seredycz kept the class interesting and peaked my interest throughout the semester. Take good notes and take advantage of his office hours for q n a.
Dr Seredycz is a great prof. He is funny and makes his lectures interesting. His quizzes motivate you to attend class and review the material regularly (which is good for info retention). He is a bit of a tough marker but its not hard to receive good grades if you take notes and pay attention. His class is refreshing and I appreciated his approac
Very Funny!!
I am not a morning person and tend to stay away from 8AM classes, but Michael's enthusiasm led to this morning class being my favourite. If you attend every class and make sure to take notes this class will be very enjoyable and the many quizzes (that can sometimes be difficult) will not be as bad. I would take a class with Michael again!
He will keep your attention that's for sure. I took his 225 course. Learned a lot. He likes giving stats questions on his pop quizzes and be prepared to give names and dates on exams. Not an easy course but he's honest about it! Nice guy too.
One of my favourite profs at Macewan along with Tami B. I really like his teaching style but what I enjoyed the most is that I could retain the content from his class. My only frown is that he doesn't teach more elective classes
A great seminar. Best prof at macewan!
Great class and a great professor. You learn and retain information in a fun relaxed way. Mike is pretty funny too.
Mike is by far the best prof I've had a Macewan. His lectures are very interesting and hilarious. He doesn't have a textbook for the class so attendance is mandatory if you want to pass, but you wont want to miss his classes anyway! Take good notes during class and it is almost impossible to fail, BIG GPA booster
Mike is my all time favorite prof. He's always there for you to talk about anything, gives great advice (re: future careers/grad school). So passionate - he teared up/cried while talking in a few lectures. Friendly, fun, welcoming, hilarious, swears like a trucker, so many good stories. I absolutely loved this class. Mike truly inspired me.
Mike's Soci 327 class was one of my favourite classes I've taken so far at MacEwan. He does have pop-quizzes and pop-papers, so attendance is a must. His papers were somewhat confusing for me in terms of what he expected so I didn't do well on the first few but after consulting with Mike, my grades improved. Hilarious, down to earth and a great guy
Mike is a really strange instructor in that he is super helpful and understanding, but isn't a great lecturer. He swears a lot, is a low-key racist, and is best friends with police officers, and tends to go off topic easily. His lectures aren't really structured, and there's no textbook. Read the articles, because he refers to them heavily.
A great professor. He keeps your interest and his classes are full of content so be sure to be ready to take notes. His quizzes are on the tough side but fair. Exams are straight forward. Can't wait to take his 327 class.
My fav prof at Mac. Quizzes, exams and papers so you'll need to attend, participation isn't mandatory though. I wish it was. Almost done this class and excited to take his new victimology class
best prof ever! I would totally take a class with him again. You can't skip classes tho since there is not book and midterms are based on his lectures. Take notes, pay attention and you will do great!!!!
My favourite professor at Macewan. I cannot wait to take his victimology course!
Loved his class, recommend
Mike is the best prof I've ever had. I would rearrange my entire schedule to take another class with him. He truly inspired me. He knows his stuff and has tons of personal experience, I would literally look forward to going to class. Take one of his classes, you won't regret it.
Any class of his should be mandatory for all students. His classes should be renamed Life 101, 102 etc. Easily the best prof I've had. Swears like a sailor, spits truth like a savant. The most un-boring class you'll ever have. No textbook, all readings are posted online. Changed the way I think about law. Wasn't a fan of his quizzes. Recommended
Easily one of the best profs I've ever had, made me actually want to attend class. Super funny and knowledgable, made learning about the CJS much more fun. No textbook, lots of annoying readings and pop quizzes though. 10/10 recommend.
Great professor! Best class at Macewan, need to attend class though to get a good mark! No final, just 2 midterms. Highly recommend
Such a good prof! Take his class, you will learn so much. He uses real life examples and is very straight forward and easy to understand. Make sure you take lots of notes.
Mike was an amazing prof. I did only receive a C but I had quite a few absences. He worked with me to help me prepare for the tests because I felt so unprepared. Attendance isnt mandatory but theres no slides so you need to take notes. 6 pop quizzes and 2 exams. Encouraging and inspirational. Take his class. Lots of assigned reading LONG!!40pgs+
Pop quizzes and 2 midterms. No final, no textbook. He's an amazing prof, sometimes hard to get a hold of. Cares about every one of his students. Hilarious, makes learning fun and easy. Go to class, write extremely good notes, and its an easy A. He bumps up grades as well if you deserve them at the end. highly recommend
He gives 6 pop quizzes worth 8% each (he only takes the top 5 quizzes) and 2 finals. No textbook. VERY down to earth and very realistic. He teaches you how to criticize reading materials. Wonderful class that encompassed a lot of material. Go to every class and write your own notes. Would take again.
Simply put, Mike is amazing. He kept my interest throughout the semester. Got sick at end of semester and he worked with me to be sure I was prepared. Best Prof I have ever had and the most respect I've ever had for a Prof. His classes might make you cry too, so bring a towel. Examples are current, quizzes require you come to class and exams okay.
Mike is an absolute wonderful prof. I was nervous because it is a lecture only class but as long as you attend and get notes you will do fine on the exams. There are pop quizzes but if you do the readings and take general notes you will do just fine. Best reason to take his class is because he's HILARIOUS and tells it straight as it is.
I got into Mike's 327 class right after having him for 225. No textbook; readings are on BB. All notes on written on the board so attendance is mandatory, but it's totally worth it. He is hilarious, inspirational, and teaches you a lot about law, policing, corrections, and life in general. Pop quizzes are a long answer question and isn't difficult.
Amazing prof, hilarious, and makes class enjoyable. You have to go because exams are entirely based on lectures and most of his information cannot be found online or in a textbook. Quizzes were all based on the readings, you must keep up with them and be prepared each class. If you know your notes and read the readings you will do very well.
Took his 225 Crim course. He is passionate but expects a lot from quizzes and exams. Despite doing poorly, was my fault, he continued to work with me to help me find my career. Isn't that the measure of an awesome prof? I'd recommend this course or 327. Both were great.
You will love every second of his classes. I wept and I laughed so many times in his classes and for all the right reasons. He's so energetic and passionate I want to get my PhD where he did and work with him. Gives some tough quizzes but his exams are very fair, as is he. Wait in line outside his office because it's worth it, he's very helpful
Great class, very funny, helpful after class. I'd recommend him! Can't wait to take his policing course.
Has 4 pop quizzes throughout the term, 3 out of the 4 are counted towards your grade. If you attend lectures and keep up on the readings the quizzes won't be a surprise. Mike is an amazing prof, very entertaining and informative. Would definitely recommend, however requires you to attend lectures no online notes. Studies he discusses are important
Mikes lectures are amazing! You will want to go to class. He is approachable and caring, and will help you with anything. The readings are extremely long, and with there being 4 pop quizzes, trying to prepare for them constantly was difficult. I found his exam questions were quite vague- so not the best prof for me personally but still awesome guy
Mike is incredible, hilarious, and knowledgeable. I felt that his exams didn't really reflect the material. I learned so much about the CJS and walked away with so much knowledge. But his exams are strictly long answer and not really about the material but about random criminologists and their theories. No textbook, no online notes, must attend!
Exams are long answer so be prepared to give lots of content but they are graded fairly. Class is enjoyable and I learned a lot versus other courses I have taken. I had some issues during term and he found time to help me with notes I missed. He drove in specifically and not during office hours. Not many profs would do that. I'd recommend
I've taken many classes with Mike and love the way his classes are structured. You need to go to class, take good notes (no PowerPoint, all on board), and review them regularly because exams are five or six long answer questions so you need to be familiar with the material and be able to write about a specific topic/issue. He's entertaining too!
Mike is so approachable and make 9 am lectures fun! Although he doesn't use notes or textbook his lectures are exciting and full of information. There's no final and an option to defer one exam to the last day of class! You can genuinely see he cares about students and wants them to succeed.
Mike is an incredible prof. This class is not easy considering it is a 300-level, but his expectations are clear. I asked him what I could do to study and he told me to make questions based on the lectures. I did exactly this and received 100% on the next exams. Do this to get top marks!
One of my favourite classes. 3 midterms, no final and the option to make up one exam. No textbook but all the readings are provided online. He doesn't have any notes so it's important to go to class and write down everything he says. Exams are 5-6 long answer questions straight out of the notes. He keeps classes entertaining too!
Solid prof, so long as you have the ability to learn his style. He only does lectures. No BB or text, and his lectures often dont connect well to the articles he assigns. He is meticulous for detail, but always willing to help. Typically only exams, and option to defer one if your not ready. Expectations unclear sometimes. Funny guy!!!!
Great prof who really understands the criminal justice system. Exams were all written and entirely composed of his lecture material and assigned readings. He does not post slides so going to class is mandatory, but he makes the class so enjoyable that you won't sit there bored.
Mike might be a great teacher in person, but during online Covid times for the love of god stay away from any of his classes. There is no instruction, no guidance, no notes, no lectures. Just the textbook. Sure this seemed fine at first, till you have to write THREE 6 page SINGLE SPACED papers blindly. Even worse he's an incredibly hard marker!
This is the first time that I had taken one of his classes, I heard really good things about him. He is very approachable, the only problem is that completing this class online is very, very difficult. There are 3 papers all heavily weighted and I felt that there was very little guidance on the papers and structure of the papers. I feel overwhelmed
Now Soc227. During the first covid semester, this class was definitely the worst class online. It is nothing but 3 huge assignments (worth 35%, 30%, 35%) that he gives NO direction on. NO powerpoints, NO video lectures, NO guidance at all expect to read the textbook. You barley hear from him unless you reach out. Worst grade in my semester.
Nobody could pay me enough money to take another course with Mike. For online classes during covid he throws 3 huge papers at you (5-6 PAGES SINGLE SPACED) graded at 35%, 30% and 35% of your grade. There is no teaching, no modules, no course content, he just expects you to read the textbook and write about things you don't learn. HARD GRADER TOO!!!
Mike gives 3 extremely hard papers with no rubric for marking. Considering I taught myself all of the course content I felt my papers were very good, yet I received subpar marks on everything because he felt there was a disconnect in my content. Maybe if he actually taught us, the disconnect wouldnt have existed. Cant believe i paid money for this
No lectures, notes, powerpoints, NOTHING. He just assigned textbook readings and expected us to learn everything on our own. Provided no instruction yet still had high expectations for the papers (worth 35%, 30%, 35%) and graded very harshly. Also sent weird emails acting like he was a god for blessing us with this hands-off (negligent) approach??
honestly one of the best profs I've had this sem, I'm not sure why everyone is saying they were overwhelmed by the three essays in his class worth 30%, it was so easy as long as you read. You're at a university level, this should be normal lol. He's such a caring and amazing prof and owned up to a mistake he made, he marks so easily too, take him!
Mike is a very nice guy but he made this class so difficult with his lack of teaching. There was no reason for us to have to read and watch and learn everything ourselves. He didnt give any notes, powerpoints or even recorded lectures. made the semester extra stressful and he graded so harshly. so frustrating, please avoid during online
Mike is by far my favourite prof on campus. All the comments about his 3 papers.. theyre really not hard. I emailed him for clarification & it made so much more sense. He genuinely cares& is totally funny. Frankly, if you think hes a hard marker then you probably didnt put in much effort. You have to try, but hes so reasonable. Def take him!!
Theres nothing wrong with Mike making you do 3 papers each worth 30+%, its the fact he doesn't teach and marks your papers hard. As a sociology major with a 3.9 GPA, getting low 80's given to me by someone who doesn't teach is ridiculous. all the positive reviews on him are coming from people who are okay with getting B's and C's lol
Papers in lieu of exams and little much else, tbh. Mike had us buy the textbook, teach ourselves the material, and then complete an 8-12 page (double-spaced) paper three times over the course of the semester. Really responsive and accessible outside of class. Solid dude and incredibly caring.
Mike is my favorite prof at MacEwan. He really cares about his students and what he teaches. The materials are really interesting. If you have a chance to take him in person, I highly recommend it! 3 papers and thats all. Fair marker as well.
Mike is definitely a great choice for those in the Criminology stream. He is super insightful and offers real-world examples and applications of concepts discussed in class. Outside of the classroom, he is willing to extend a helping hand. Note: The textbook (if one is offered in your class) is essentially your bible for papers and exams.
Podcasts are about 3 minutes long, along with articles or videos. Each paper is worth 30% - 35% and there is no rubric or clear instructions on how to properly write the assignments. He is overall a nice professor, but extremely tough marker.
This was my easiest class of the semester. His feedback and expectations can be a little vague but if you contact him outside of class he is very helpful in understanding the assignment, where you went wrong or things to improve on. Definitely not as difficult as people make him and the class set out to be.
Such an amazing prof! I took this class online, but he was still extremely active and approachable via email. He's a very fair (and honestly, lenient) marker. We had to write 4 papers over the course of the semester, which was kinda hard for me, but I still secured amazing marks! He's smart, and passionate about what he teaches!
The course consisted of three major essays and that's it for your whole grade so that was a bit intimidating but Mr. Seredycz sent out many comforting emails pertaining to assignments and was quick to respond to emails. He also gave back personalized feedback for essays detailing how you can improve your writing:)
Overall, I enjoyed his feedback and what he had to say, but I had a hard time taking notes and getting a full grasp of the class for all it has to offer. His assignments, although lengthy, did help a lot in putting everything together for to make more sense,I feel like I have not retained much as I hoped for in the semester. Cares lot for students
Mike is a great prof for anyone interested in victimology. His exams are based on lecture content so you need to attend class. His lectures are amazing & he is very passionate about what he teaches. There's 2 midterms, an assignment, & no final. He has a make up exam day if you can't write on the scheduled day. Take this class with him if you can!
He made coming to an 8am class worth it. His lectures are very easy to listen to because he teaches the course so well. the downside is that he doesn't provide any notes or ppts, your notes are solely based on what you write down based off him talking. We also had 3 midterms for the whole course, that's it. Take his class if you take good notes!!
Michael is a nice professor and will recommend reaching out via email if you need help. However, all of the content was based on articles, news clips, or videos. No power points or notes and a very hard marker. I would not recommend taking this course online.
Had 2 papers and participation marks. No rubrics for the assignments and had issues explaining where marks were taken off. Super engaging. For this class we did a gamified lecture style which involved a lot of class engagement for participation marks so if you don't like talking I would not recommend. Always there to talk and responds fast
He was one of the toughest graders I've ever encountered; he had no rubrics for the assignments, and it sounded like he didn't even read the questions on our essays because we would ask for help, and he wouldn't even know what we were talking about. He also talked quite violently in class about offenders, which is scary in a classroom full of women
Best prof ever!! I had three papers but as long as you're detailed, you're fine. Along with mini in-class assignments. this is a victimology class, so we do talk about harsh realities, but he made the class a safe environment. Don't be a SOCI student if you can't handle talking about real-life cruelties people face in the justice system.
This was my favorite prof in 3 years. He didn't really have a grade rubric but when I had questions he was fast to respond even on weekends and holidays. He brought his humor into the lectures as they were really heavy. There were 3 essays and no tests which made it easier to understand the material and connect everything. He stuck to the point.
Mike was one of the most influential professors I've ever had. He had some amazing humor, he was relatable and he got the toughest lectures through almost seamlessly, there was 3 essays throughout the course and participation marks, he was fair and explained concepts if you asked for help. Very engaging
he is very funny, nice and caring about his students. he taught once a week, was mandatory to go, but he will do anything for you to get a good grade. lectures were engaging and fun.
One of the BEST professors Macewan has. His lectures are super enaging, although his classes are early in the morning he makes it worth your time and enjoyable. He is very straight up with his opinions and passionate about his lectures. Attendance is mandatory as most of his papers are derived from class discussions as well as participation marks.
