BEST CLASS!! seriously, the best professpr I have had so far at JMU! take this class during may session; youll learn a lot and have a blast doing it. We even had class in a park with different ethnic foods! sooo funny and sooo smart! two thumbs up!
He is funny and very very smart. I love Dr. Seth, and he loves students. He takes our education more seriously than school administration, so get to know this guy!!
Great teacher...made what I thought would be a boring GenEd a blast. He has a great sense of humor and is very knowledgable. I really enjoyed this class and would recommend everyone take one of his classes.
Very funny man. Class is easy and he gives a different perspective on everything. Makes fun of everyone and everything in class. Defintely take him if you need a gen ed.
Funny funny guy. Makes boring books seem not too bad. Class is pretty entertaining, tells lots of really random but funny stories in class.
AWESOME teacher!!! He is hilarious, makes class enjoyable. You want to go to class just to see what he'll do next. I try to take every class he offers.
Ahhh Dr. Seth. This guy is on crack or something but he's sooo fun and random. Class is really easy if you read and do the work. Take him- he'll make you want to go to class.
he spoke about north korea to us..the guy is a genious he knows more about that place then the president..excellent teacher..knowledgable
HE IS VERY SMART, HELPFUL, FAIR, FUNNY, NOT ANAL AND HIGHLY EXPERIENCED. I WISH ALL PROFESSORS WERE LIKE HIM. MOST PROFESSORS HERE ARE JELOUS OF HIM BECAUSE HE IS SO PERSONABLE AND MUCH SMARTER DUE TO HIS EXPERIENCE IN HIS FIELD.
his sense of humor is GREAT. We had quizzes on the reading almost every day, so even though there was not really an attendance policy, you still gotta go. He is willing to talk to you when you need any help
sooo funny! class is easy, tests aren't too diffcult. He really knows what's he talking about, a really intelligent guy. I recommend him!
he is the funniest man I know. makes class very interesting. you have quizzes every day but he tells you the questions before hand; they help your grade. hes very willing to help. readings can be tough but interesting
This is a completely fantastic teacher! He is a huge asset to JMU and knows SO much about his subject and has personal experiences about going to various places. Take his classes!
Have had him twice in the past two years because he is a good teacher. Likes to joke around, knows a great amount about a variety of topics. Doesn't always stick to syllabus, which is a good thing.
My favorite prof ever! He's SO funny and has a great knowledge of history. Really great guy.
Im sorry, i think this guy sucked. He rambles on for entire class periods about his trip across the Sahara. SOOO BORRRRING! His tests suck, and you have to go to class to take stupid quizzes.IF YOU WANT TO BE BORED TO DEATH, TAKE HIM.
This may have been a gen ed but I didn't know it, he made the class very interesting and is incredibly funny. He's a bit of an odd ball, but that's where his charm lies. Worth taking at least once.
I aced everything but never went to class and missed a lot of quizzes. Take this course if you like going to class. Easy tests!!!
GREATEST PROFESSOR EVER! I learned so much in his class. He has the most interesting stories to tell and he loves to joke around. Read the material and try your best to understand it.
One of the best professors at JMU. He is definately worth the investment. Learned a lot about family and gender relationships in East Asia.
Took him over May session - one of the best profs I've had. So funny, keeps class interesting, made the three hours a day seem like an hour and a half. Test harder than expected, but very very good professor. Take him - you won't regret it.
keeps it fun
I LOVE HIM! very animated professor that makes a potentially coma-inducing subject fun and very interesting. His ongoing passion about what he teaches is contagious. VERY easy quizzes and tests if you read, definitly my favorite class so far. i love him.
wants to see his students learn & do will, very animated and funny. makes history interesting. i recommend him if you have to take ghist.
He is so AWESOME!! I also had Seth for HIST 453. His lectures are very interesting and he is so FUNNY! He speaks from experience which is really cool too! He is def. one of my FAVORITE teachers at JMU!! TAKE HIS CLASSES!
PLEASE TAKE HIM!! hands down the funniest professor i have had, he is just so awesome!! daily quizzes which are really easy, papers aren't too bad although he can be a somewhat tough grader, but definitely if you have to take this class, take him, you will love him!!
mainly just lectures nothing fancy, easy quizzes every day, papers aren't that bad and tests aren't that bad overall i'd say it's a pretty easy class and he's willing to talk to you if you need help on a paper
I love this man! He is hilarious and it makes me want to attend his class!! Take him if you can because you will have a great time!
This guy is hilarious...Doesn't really have an attendence policy but you'll want to go cause the class is so fun and he makes it so interesting.....Can be a hard grader at times but hes really passionate and you'll def learn a lot
what an overall nice guy! so friendly and helpful...really cares about his students. very knowledgeable. 5 point quiz everyday, but extremely easy-one question was to DRAW A PYRAMID!yeah, no joke. take him!!
I liked Dr. Seth, but I wish he wouldn't have placed emphasis on how great some of the graduate students were, matter of factually some of them were dumber than a box of rocks.
very very very funny man! tests are not too bad. essays on the other hand, watch out! he will rip them apart if they are up to his standard. go to class and study and you should be good to go.
He is so laid back and will help u with anything. He'll even critique ur essays before they're due. Sometimes u can do them over. Funniest professor. Loves to talk. Very knowledgable and personable. You'll learn a ton since he is so passionate and hilarious.
His enthusiasm is catchy. I got an A and all i did was go to his office and act interested. To be honest with u, I did not even study once for that class. Some smarter people got lower grades than me. ( go figure that one) Overall, I do reccommend him to all students.
Seth's a good guy, but the course is deceptive. You think it'll be a breeze, but then those essays; good god! He's just too brutal for a GEN ED. Beware.
easy quizes every class, almost. 2 easy tests and a couple of essays. Hell let u submit the essay early or just get him to edit it before due date and then resubmit. Easy A if you do that.
Seth's the man! Easy quizzes almost every class, 2 tests are easy, and essays aren't bad, just let him review it before the due date. genuinely cares about his students and makes the class very entertaining. highly recommend
I received an A in every class I took last semester except for Dr. Seth's (my only gen ed). Granted, I got a B, I had a VERY difficult time in the class--not because of the material but because of Dr. Seth's unwillingness to work with me. He skipped out on appointments and did not help me at all.
seth is obsessed with east asia. somewhat of a nice man, however is not the easiest grader especially on the essays (they suck), but you can always ask him to look over a grade if you think it is unfair. not my favorite class by far. if you are not interested in history dont take this.
This was a great and interesting class. Anyone who says he is not willing to help is crazy, he has been one of the best professor's i've had at JMU. He is also very clear about what he wants for papers, so you just need to follow instructions.
he is an awesome prof!!! he didn't put emphasis on the grad students in my class (prob bc they were rarely there and 2/3 weren't undergrad history majors and had no idea what they were doing) but he is so passionate about world history and has a great personality.
I love this man. He's an awesome teacher. He's got lots of stories from his life to help you understand what he's talking about. Sometimes goes on tangents but they're amusing anyways. Grades easier if you get him to review your paper before you hand it in. I definitely suggest taking his class, especially if you're taking a gened history.
One of the most absent-minded men in the world! He changes his mind at a moment's notice, which makes his usually easy class much harder. And if you like history don't bother. He's obessessed with Asia. He spent half an hour on Egyptian culture, but four days on the ancient China. Same with all other areas that weren't Asian. Funny though.
This man is absolutely hilarious. Lots of funny stories and I think he may have lived everywhere in the world at some point in his life. Tests are extremely easy since he gives study guides. He's tough on grading papers but they're not too bad. Strict attendance policy with a seating chart, kinda sucks but he makes you want to go to class.
great prof!!! i would highly recommend him! easy quizzes everyday that help your grade, a couple papers, and easy tests bc he gives study guide. take him if u can he's halarious!!
Dr. Seth is amazing. He cracks jokes all through class and you can tell he really knows and loves what he's teaching. His quizzes and tests aren't that bad. You'll love him.
Is there anyone that doesn't love Dr. Seth???
Extremely interesting, I actually enjoyed going to class everyday.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Makes class very interesting and always telling jokes. I have never liked history before until his class. You really learn and he knows what hes talking about. TAKE HIM! Not too hard either.
He is sooo funny and nice!! and his class is really easy you barely have to do any work in there!! U MUST TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Seth is the most amazing professor here at JMU. This class is pretty easy, two interm exams, a paper, and what seems like is going to be easy final. Attendance is required because there are daily quizzes on the readings, but it's so easy. Professor Seth is so sweet, really easy to approach, friendly, and so funny. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Professor Seth is the BEST teacher I've ever had. He is SUCH an interesting person, and so hilarious. Take his class!! You won't regret it! Not a chance...I promise!
this is the best class i have take so far at JMU...Prof. Seth makes history interesting and he tells the most random jokes. Take this class you def. wont regret it!!
Brilliant professor. Very thorough, but so much that it makes the class tough not knowing much about history. He really wants to know each student individually in a 150 person class, which says a lot. Stop by his office before papers are due. He will tell you what to do to get a good grade.
Dr. Seth is hands down the best GHIST professor. He's really funny and jokes around constantly. This guy has lived on five continents! Class is fairly easy - read, lots of quizzes but they don't add up to much, 8 page paper, two exams, one final. Truly an intelligent, humorous man - take him!
He is very knowledgeable about the subject. He tends to get very into the Asian cultures (which makes it hard because you never learn about Asia in high school barely). 5 Question daily quizzes but skimming the chapter will keep your grade up. Learns the names of most people and helpful if you go to office hours. Jokes are kinda corny.
Dr. Seth is ex-CIA. I'm convinced of it. As a professor he is extremely knowledgable and he loves to throw in interesting facts in each class. His exams are pretty tough, but you'll walk away from the class with a lot of new knowledge. Attendance is mandatory but you won't want to miss his class!
Dr. Seth has the best sense of humor and has a beautiful understanding of the subject
LOVE this class. I never dread going to it because he makes it so interesting and fills it with humor. One paper you have to write but he will help you throughout the semester with it. 2 tests and a final. If took decent notes and study, a B shouldn't be a problem
This class makes you want to get an A. You want to see him on his office hours, and you want to do well! (it's like you'll hurt his feelings if you do bad.) He loves what he teaches and you learn so much. I know I did! Go talk to him on his office hours and youll get many laughs.
LOVE Dr. Seth. Mandatory attendance but you want to go. 2 Tests and a non cumulative final, plus an 8 page paper - it's graded tough but there's lots of office hours if you choose to go. Always willing to help you out if you put forth the effort. Make sure you go each day and read chapters - short quizzes each morning that are super easy.
He is a great guy who loves history. He has tough tests, but the research paper helps grade. It's really annoying how there is a mini-quiz EVERY DAY! They kind of are jokes, but it still gets old. This would be a great class if you want to be a history major but has way too much work if you are looking for an easy gen ed.
If you put in a little effort you will get an A. He is such a funny guy, I can't wait to get to his class. Everything he says is a hoot! I hated World History before this but now I know ten times as much as I did before.
seth is the man...the material in class can be boring but he jokes around non-stop so its not too bad at all. his tests are ok, but easy quizzes and term paper boost your grade.
Makes the class very interesting and keeps it fun. Likes to joke around a lot and doesn't really take anything seriously, but expects homework to be done which most of the time really isn't that hard.
He is a nice guy and loves to joke around. He really knows what he is talking about because he has been all over the world. Tests are slightly hard. Quiz almost everyday, which get old after a while. One research paper that isn't that bad and he is always willing to read over it. This is an overall good class, take him.
Best Hist prof at JMU!! His corny jokkes are funny and good natured. He try's his hardest to make history the funnest subject at jmu!
Great Professor. Highly recommended! You have 20 quizes which are all easy if you read. One 10 page paper which he will help you with if any troubles. 2 test worth 50 pts each which if you listen in class you will do well. And a final which consist of mostly essays. Take him. It's worth your time.
Crazy man but makes lectures very fun with his jokes and stories. He really knows his material! A small easy quiz most every class, but based on the reading. 10 page term paper which he is very helpful on- but grades hard. Take this class.. it's great!
For to be an old man, Dr. Seth is pretty cool. You have 20 quizzes, a paper which I think he grades very hard but he still cool, two midterms, and a final which was kind of difficult but he'll help you with the essay part and all. But yeah, he's just a cool old man. I'm going to probably take him again for GHIST 101. Definitely take him. :)
Awesome! Dr. Seth is fantastic! Super funny, and really knows what he is talking about. He has a huge passion for it, but also really loves his students and will help you SOOO ridiculously much with anything and everything if you go to office hours. Just a genuinely nice guy. Study, and an A is totally possible,
This guy is a great teacher. He's the funniest one at JMU. And hes got the greatest stories around! The only problem with him are his papers. They are difficult, dont slack on these really!
I took this class during Junemester. Dr. Seth absolutely loves teaching about Korea. It's his area of expertise, and he will talk your ear off if you go to his office hours. 2 papers, one exam, quizzes almost everyday. The class wasnt a cakewalk, but I've had alot worse as well. Great overall professor.
Dr. Seth can be a nice guy and funny. However, you have to get on his good side. The book is used a lot, but class lectures are important as well. Be sure to go. Sometimes he is a little hard to follow because he goes off topic a lot. Study guides for tests cover every topic on the test, but you have to know every detail about the topics.
Dude this guy is legit. I took him specifically because of his reviews on ratemyprofessors. He's funny, easy, and chillax. I have an A and all I do is read the readings for the quizzes on every Monday, and I study for the tests. Its not hard at all. And remember, Get Money, get Paid.
If you can get this guy then definitely go for it. He's very funny and he has good stories. There is usually a quiz everyday and his tests are somewhat difficult (All short answers). We had to do one 10 but it was pretty easy. You can't deny a professors awesomeness when his first real assignment is buy crayons for coloring.
I had him for Korean history. He is really into teaching this class and has awesome stories. There is no attendence policy but you should go to every class. There are a few quizzes, 2 book reviews, a flim review and 2 exams. There is a decent amount of work but he makes the class really interesting.
I loved professor Seth. He's so funny, I looked forward to this class every time. Quizzes the first class of every week but if you do the reading they're so easy. Two tests, one paper and the final. You're allowed 3 absences, you can leave during class if you need to. TAKE HIM.
TAKE HIM! He's so funny and overall a great guy. Has a lot of interesting personal stories and really cares about his students. You can tell he loves what he does. Class is not hard... quiz at the beginning of each week but they are easy if you do the reading. 2 tests and a final and one research paper, but he helps you a lot with it. Great guy!
Took for Korean history. Not the most organized prof., and he loves pop quizzes, but don't let this stop you. He's funny and willing to help with anything. 2 book reviews (easy), 1 movie review (easy), a midterm and a final (okay). Took a field trip, which was fun. Overall, an excellent professor!
Seth was very helpful during his office hours, but extremely boring during lectures. He always went on tangents during lecture. He made several ****/**** jokes during the semester; most of which the students laughed at. The exams aren't hard as long as you read the coursepack and know the material on the study guide.
Easy class; but, Dr. Seth does not realize he is teaching college students...I felt like I was in 3rd grade while in his class. He is interested in world history; but his lectures are boring and he only focuses on what he views as important. One 10 page paper that Seth is completely obsessed with. He annoyed me pretty much every class.
Dr. Seth knows his material well. He's easy - but good. Really funny guy. If you're looking for a fun, easy going class in which you ACTUALLY LEARN SOMETHING, Seth is for you.
He really knows his stuff. I had no previous interest in history and usually never grasp the concepts but the way he organized his course pack makes a lot more sense. I love his class, he gives study guides, and quizzes every class (sometimes 2 if you have a map quiz) but it's no big deal. 6 Page paper for the end of the year. He's hilarious
His lectures are pointless as most of it is just random stories and facts which he probably makes up. Attendance is mandatory and you must read the textbook since he gives quizzes on every chapter which adds up to 1/3 of your grade. Tests aren't too hard since he gives study guides but they are all fill in the blank. Its a lot of work for a Gened.
He is a really funny teacher. I couldn't always understand what he meant but I still liked going to his class. The quizzes and tests weren't so bad and he really helped us on the 6 page paper if we went to him for it.
Dr. Seth is very funny but the classes can be boring. He uses his own textbook and after each chapter you take a 5 point quiz. If you read they arent too hard. There are two tests which are not hard if you study. Then there is a final and a paper that is due with the final. It is a fun class and though it does have some work it is not too hard.
One of the best teachers I've had in my 4 years at JMU. Makes it interesting so you want to come to class (even tho attendance is mandatory). Tests and quizzes are easy if you read the material. Prof. Seth really goes out of his way to help you with the end of term paper. TAKE HIM!!
All history Professors such at JMU but Seth isn't that bad probably one of the better ones. Gives a lot of quizzes so keep up with reading. 2 Tests are short answer, kind of difficult but he will give you points back if you argue your answers. 1 paper 5-6 pages."book" is his homemade version he made himself. Take him over any other teacher for sure
You have to read the coursepack that he wrote for the weekly chapter quizzes. There are 2 tests that are short answer but he gives a study guide. 1 paper, easy. Attendance is mandatory, but you don't have to pay attention, he doesn't really lecture. OVERALL, TAKE HIM.
short answer tests, usually just asks about the broad concepts and themes of the reading. quiz on every chapter that are easy ifyo9u read it. 6 page paper due before the final, and he's very willing to help on it. funny lectures, very nice professor, definitely take him
What to say! His quizes were hard, I read every night! His test are not that Bad. He gives you the study guide. He is just confusing. He says one thing in class and in his course pack says another.
Without a doubt one of the more intelligent professors at JMU. I honestly don't know what people are talking about when they say it was hard. If you read his coursepack (2-5 pages a week), you will have no problem getting an A. Attendance is mandatory but he makes class fun with jokes. Definitely take him!
Dr. Seth makes history so much fun and tells great stories. He wrote the book ($19). There are reading quizzes when you start a new chapter, which are easy if you do the reading. There are three interim exams, which he gives you a study guide for 2 weeks in advanced. There is also on paper in the course. He is VERY HELPFUL and wants you to do well.
Dr. Seth was a great professor, one of my favorites. He is really nice and funny. His lectures arent boring because he always seems to make a joke or say something funny during his talk. You dont really have a textbook, but a coarse packet and you have quizzes on those a lot but if u do the reading then you will do great in the class.
Easy teacher as long as you read the coursepack you'll do fine on the quizzes. tests are easy A or B with minimal studying. TAKE HIM
Lots of busywork, tons of quizzes but they're really easy, tests easy-he gives you a study guide beforehand with everything that will be on it. hilarious guy. i would recommend him. you can slack the whole year and still get an A or B in the class. just make sure you read what he assigns, except you can sparknote the novels he assigns
Professor Seth is hands-down one of the greatest professors I have had at JMU. It doesn't hurt that I'm a History Major but he is helpful to everyone! Read the Coursepack and you will do FINE on the quizzes. Also, if you complete the study guides for test, you'll get an A. Great guy, great class, and not a bad Gen Ed. TAKE HIM!
Prof Seth is such a good teacher! He helps you step by step, has a study guide for each test. Read the coursepack (he wrote it, and it's only $20 bucks) and you will get 100% on each quiz. He is hilarious and loves history. One of the best teachers I've had. TAKE HIM :)
WIth his class, you get what you put into it. I didn't find it as easy as some ratings, but he will help you a LOT, even re-write term papers, go over the study guide in office hours, etc. SO FUNNY. I would take him again.
Loved him. Made a point to learn most of the people in the classes names (and there was 120 in my section alone). IF your doing bad in his class, he'll call you to his office and will talk about anything. Class is a little hard, and study guides can be slightly mis leading, but overall interesting class, low work load.
Quizzes are straight from the course pack. Tests are from lectures in class. He's really funny, and quizzes are easy and he drops the lowest one. Final exam is a **** with a map quiz, short answer, and essay.
He's awesome, so funny and really knows his stuff. the mid-term and final are kinda tough but do-able
Amazing teacher. The amount of knowledge he drops in this class is actually unreal. Quizzes are easy. In term exams 2 and they are somewhat tough. One essay and a Final. Overall Amazing teacher.
Michael is such a good professor. He makes sure that you know the material, but I would love to take another class with Michael. He makes sure that you read the textbook, but it isn't bad at all. I worked fairly hard in the class and got a B+. If you want to do well in the class, you can! TAKE MICHAEL SETH!
Hands down the best professor I've had at JMU so far. He knows absolutely everything you need to know to pass the class right off the top of his head. He's hilarious also so that is a huge plus. Two in term exams, one essay, an easy participation grade, weekly quizzes which are also easy, and the final. TAKE HIS CLASS!
What a great professor! He learned everyone's name in my 100+ person class and was friendly towards all his students. Very personable and knowledgable. Take notes on every chapter of the coursepack, review them the night before each class, and you should get 100% on all the quizzes. Reviewing in groups for the tests/midterms and final is helpful.
As a freshman you don't really know what you're coming into when you enter college but he has been the best professor that I could have had to make the transition easier. He is very helpful and knowledgable. I would definitely take a class from him again.
Even in a giant lecture class he cares about each student's success. Engaging lectures and plenty of potential to get an A in his class. Very highly recommended. He also has some great stories.
He's a really nice man and definitely loves history. His lectures will put you to sleep though and he talks the entire time with a power point that has very limited information. You're best bet is to read the textbook unless you are very good at focusing for a solid 50 minutes. He's willing to help you during office hours with papers too.
Seth has a good sense of humor and includes his own stories about his travels to make lectures more interesting. Very willing to help during office hours and is readily available. Exams aren't too difficult and there's always a study guide for the reading quizes. Not too difficult and some classes can be fun and interesting.
Dr. Seth is such a great professor! He really keeps you engaged with his humor and enthusiasm for the subject. He even made an effort to learn everyone's names. If you have the chance to take Seth for GHIST 101, DO IT. I couldn't imagine a better professor for this course!
His course is very difficult. He makes attendance mandatory, his lectures are so boring I can barely find the motivation to go to them. He gives a TON of quizzes. They're usually easy but take a lot of reading. He assigns a lot of 4-5 page papers. His tests are short answer. He makes you go to his office hours. I didn't find him very helpful at all
Alright, the difficulty of Seth's class depends on the amount of effort you put into it. Lectures are super boring and doesn't take attendance but gives fairly easy quizzes based on the book, which he provides study guides for. He grades the papers hard though. Other than that his exams are decent if you do the study guide and actually study them.
Professor Seth is hilarious! haha. there are 2 (short answer) exams & a paper (5 pgs). Then there is the final exam and the final paper. There are 20 total quizzes but he does give you the questions to know so if you study and read you'll get a 5/5. Its a lot of work for a genEd and the class is annoying. But if you put the work in its fine!
Super easy class. Weekly quizes and short assignments. Final and Midterm were short answer and the questions were given a head of time. Only two papers. He's a genuine guy and tells a lot of stories that are interesting. Wants to get to know everyone. Lectures can be dry. I honestly don't know how you could get lower than a B+.
This is Seth's area of expertise and he gets really excited to teach it. He has a lot of anecdotes about his travels there and makes lots of jokes. Weekly quizes, the midterm is essentially a big quiz, take home final, 2 book reports or a long paper, and 2 short response papers. Not too bad. Lectures are easy. This is an easy 300.
LOTS of quizzes where you have to read the book, but he gives study guides so they're really easy. The tests are the complete opposite- 25 short answers. He grades them ridiculously and won't give back points. Lots of essays that he grades pretty tough. He makes you go to office hours a lot but is usually pretty helpful during them.
Very clear and insightful teacher. all the tests are straightforward from his powerpoints and he has a lot of great stories and loves his job he does have a couple of papers including a pretty important final one but overall it was a very interesting and easy class as long as you pay attention in class.
Actually enjoyed class a lot. Quiz every week, thats 5 questions and are super easy (he gives you a study guide for them too). The tests are not hard if you actually study the study guide. His class is do-able. Wish I could take him for another history class; its a lot of work but its definitely worth it when you know you'll get an A.
Quiz every week = easy. Tests are fairly difficult. Everything is short answer. The final is ridiculous: know where EVERY country is if you want to pass it. He has an attendance policy which is annoying because besides the quizzes, you don't learn much in class.
Dr. Seth keeps lectures entertaining with his jokes and stories about life. Every quiz and test in this course comes straight from the coursepack (plus he uploads study guides with all the questions). If you do all the work I don't know how you could get lower than a B+.
Dr. Seth keeps lectures entertaining with his jokes and stories about life. Every quiz and test in this course comes straight from the coursepack (plus he uploads study guides with all the questions). Very friendly and wants to know all his students! If you do all the work I don't know how you could get lower than a B+.
Dr. Seth is an AMAZING PROFESSOR! He truly cares about all his students doing well and loves teaching the material. He is really funny, and time flies-by in his class! There is a quiz every week (super easy, he tells you all the questions on it), two tests and essays throughout the semester (the essays he helps until you get an A). TAKE HIS CLASS
Professor Seth is great, he is very helpful and he makes class very interesting. He is one of the best professors at JMU. He gets to know his students and is very friendly.
Highly recommend Dr. Seth. Quizzes every week, sometimes more often than once a week. But they are only 5 points and if you study, you'll do fine. 2 tests, he grades quite subjectively but its not too difficult to do well. He genuinely wants his students to learn and succeed.
Do not do not DO NOT take this class a gen-ed. I'm begging you. You will thank me later. The only good thing about this class is that he gets to know all of his students. Otherwise, the lectures are confusing and the coursepack which he wrote is confusing. He is very critical and an extremely tough grader. All of his tests are short answer and hard
Dr. Seth is a great professor who truly cares about his students. The class is pretty easy and the tests arent bad. However, he can be confusing, and not clear on assignments. We had 2 essays originally, but then he dropped the last one, but then brought it back. GO TO HIM WITH ESSAYS. There are weekly quizzes, 2 tests, 2 papers, and 1 final
Do not take this class for a gen ed. He is an extremely tough grader if you do not say exactly what he wants you to say. You have to go to office hours at least once a week if you want to do good. This class is high maintenance for people with hard majors that are just trying to fill a gen ed.
So goofy but really passionate about history. Tries to entertain class and thinks he is hilarious but in the best way possible. Loves to get to know students and each kid in class had to go talk with him about the large paper due. Tough grader and vague about what he wants for main essay but he is so nice and I learned so much
Dr. Seth is great. Whether GenEd or Major classes, Dr. Seth is willing to help his students. For 453, we had a rough start, but by the end it was great.
Seth posts a study guide for all quizzes and tests so you know what to study for. If you ever need help, set up a meeting and he will do his best to help, however he does like to talk and ramble on. I recommend sitting near the front as his voice doesn't travel that well. He is an awkward but kind and caring professor. I recommend taking him
No quizzes, only test is the final. He would give us about 2 weeks to read a book and write a short 500 word essay. There are six of these total. All you do in class is discuss the books. He split our MWF class into 2 groups, one group met MW and the other met MF. Hes pretty awkward and makes a lot of uncomfortable jokes. class is very boring.
I'm a nursing major and I find this class super interesting. The biggest thing is that you have to read a book every two weeks and write a 500 word essay on it. But he is more than happy to read drafts to steer you in the right direction. Kinda sucks that he grades the essays whole numbers out of 10 (910, 810, 710...). There is no in-between.
If you have a hard major, DO NOT take this class for a gen ed. He assigns outside events and lectures for a requirement, and makes you jump through hoops to make them up if you're busy during these outside events. Attendance policy is extremely strict, lectures are often unclear. Cares more about what he wants to hear than your own opinion.
Professor Seth is a somewhat tough grader on the essays. Definitely have to work to get an 8 or 9 out of 10. Overall, the material covered in this class was really interesting with recently global issues that are actually worth looking at. There is a lot of reading to do, but only a final for tests, and the final was two essays. No written tests.
He was pretty entertaining cause he said really weird things in class. Easy 5 point quizzes if you read, tests were pretty hard though. Cut down our 2 10 page papers to one 5 page one. Made us go to boring outside activities for credit. Made us sign up for office hours but that was for our own benefit. Remembered everyone's name in 150 person class
I don't even know where to begin here. Seth is just straight up loony. Definitely off his rocker. Rambles in class a lot of time about random stuff. All fill in the blank quizzes (1 every week), tests (2), and final. He also gives a paper or two that will most likely make or break you. Oh, and attendance is mandatory even though the class has 150.
Seth is a big ole goofball who loves his students and the work he does. He is always great during office hours and really takes the time to get to know his students. His small quizzes are easy if you read and they can really boost or crush your grade. I am purposely not taking 101 in the hopes that he will teach it.
GEN ED: He is an extremely tough grader if you do not say exactly what he wants you to say. You have to go to office hours at least once a week if you want to do well. You learn a lot but This class is high maintenance with quizzes every class and only two impossible test. Increased my knowledge!! but decreased my GPA...
For a GenEd course, get ready to WORK! Quizzes every other class, lots of reading in the course pack, two big tests (all short answer), final essay, and and final exam. Very kind-hearted man, always willing to help. But very tough grader; hard to do EXACTLY what he is looking for and to get a good grade.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He makes you come in for office hours to get assignments and it takes at least an hour to get the information because he tells everyone to come at the same time. For a gen ed class, he make you do a lot of work. He also changes requirements for assignments the day before its due. The exam a 25 hot answer questions( part one)...
Part Two. Seth is a picky grader with the tests and he forgets to tell you information that he is going to put on it. Often he will give an exam then the next class a reading quiz and then the next class a paper is due and so on. If you are an IDLS major or Hist major don't tell him because he makes you do extra assignments and office hours.
Be prepared to put in a lot of work! Seth is crazy and makes you do a lot of work outside of class. During his lectures, he does not really cover the material just what you already read and memorized for the weekly quizzes. It feels like he sends you daily emails with assignments or additions to assignments. Seth means well, just a bad professor.
Professor Seth is a great guy, but his class is extremely difficult for just a GenED. The grading seems arbitrary and he assigns projects and quizzes at random. He's a very smart and interesting guy to listen to, and sometimes says some funny things during lecture, but its a whole lot of work and he practically forces you to come to office hours
This class is hard for a GenEd. You have to make sure that you read the assigned readings or else you will not pass. He gets off topic and hardly discusses the readings. He gives a ton of quizzes and his mid-terms are hard. You have to read four books and write papers on them.
Love this man. Im not even doing great in the class because I'm lazy but his lectures are interesting and he's a really funny guy. When i actually was proactive and read the textbook i had no problem getting A's on the quizzes and B's on the midterms. Believe me, if I can do it so can you
Dr. Seth is a super nice man and is always willing to help you out. His lectures are boring and there is a quiz every week, as well as occasional extra map or take-home quizzes. The tests aren't super hard but aren't easy, and all the questions are short answer. He is hilarious and a good professor.
HIST 102 is pretty easy with Seth, attendance is mandatory and the tests and quizzes are not hard at all, he tells you whats on the test and what to study, the only assignment that had some difficulty was the final paper. He asks every student to come to officer hours and gets to know them and enjoys talking to them.
Lectures were pretty long, and the exams were very difficult. Expect all short answer questions on quizzes and no multiple choice for this course. He was always available at his office hours however and was very helpful in reviewing for the exam.
-LOTS OF ESSAYS/READING -HARD GRADER -WOULD TAKE AGAIN -VERY HELPUL Very interesting and engaging lectures; Professor Seth loves what he teaches and is an entertaining speaker, though he tends to go on tangents about stories about his own life. Would definitely take this course again.
If you aren't great at history, don't take this class. He expects you to know everything and doesn't really teach. The textbook teaches you everything. His office hours don't help. I went multiple times and still did poorly. He insulted me and made me very upset during a visit to his office hours. He thinks his rude comments are funny. They're not.
Dr. Seth is a great man, he is very kind & often finds his own jokes too funny. His class on the other hand is awful. Expect to read a chapter (20-30 pages) every week & be quizzed. There was two exams which are very difficult and completely short answers. The final exam was IMPOSSIBLE, he expected you to know entirely too much for a Gen Ed class.
This class is very hard. I would not take it again. The tests are very hard. Attendance is mandatory. He is almost impossible to understand. The final is the hardest test you will ever take. However, if you go to him he loves to see you, but warning you may not get anything out of it.
Michael Seth is a classic example of wasted gov't funding. He clearly berates you for your ignorance and basically relies on you do teach yourself. The department needs to give him pot because he needs to chill the F out. Avoid him at all costs!!!
Avoid Seth at all costs. He does not teach, assigns confusing assignments, is unclear about his grading criteria, and will refuse to help you if you're in need. The average grades of the class are relatively low, because of his unreasonably harsh grading, and most students never grasp or understand the material, due to his terrible teaching.
One of the worst professors I've had. He expects his students to know an unreasonable amount of information, and won't even teach some material he expects you to know. His tests are entirely short answer, and practically impossible. There is a significant portion of the class (all good students) who will fail his tests because he is so unclear.
This was a gen ed, and was an entirely different level of difficulty. Seth is pretty unclear as a teacher, and doesn't make much sense. He is a ridiculous grader, and marks answers wrong that are clearly right because of something as simple as a spelling error, or because you didn't word it the way he would. He expects way too much of students.
Seth is senile, nitpicky, and a rather poor professor. For a gen ed, this class is much harder than it should be, with 20-30 page readings assigned every night, difficult quizzes, useless assignments that are graded meticulously, and impossible tests. Do yourself a favor, and avoid taking him. He needs to retire, and do the students here a favor.
Avoid taking history with this professor. He expects his students to know everything and you will most likely be teaching yourself the course material. Memorize the textbook or you'll probably fail. His office hours do not help, and he is quick to insult your intelligence and make you feel stupid for struggling in his class. Don't do it to yourself
Unless you have a natural affinity for history, and enjoy teaching yourself, I don't recommend taking this course with Seth. His lack of teaching ability is somewhat incredible, and he offers little to no help to students who struggle in his class. He barely teaches, yet still has the audacity to grade harshly enough that all his students fail.
there's short assignments throughout the semester (on 4 books and 1 movie, dont even need to read the whole book to do them) 1 book review or 5 pg paper. He cracks a lot of jokes and certainly makes this class the most entertaining one! The textbook basically teaches u the material for the most part so do the readings!!but relatively easy A overall
Dr. Seth rambles on and on, makes racist comments, and there are quizzes each week on the course pack (which he wrote- barely legible due to typos). He assigns geography and chapter quizzes via email the day before they're due, but the TA grades them, so they're pretty easy. The exams are very hard. He wants you to like history, but not worth it
TERRIBLE. Quizzes every single class. You are teaching yourself in this class. If Seth never showed up, the grades would be the same. He makes you read the chapter and take the quiz on that chapter all before he even begins to speak about the chapter at all. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!
Dr. Seth means well, but he is not a great prof. He just goes off on tangents during class and doesn't really teach. There is a quiz every single class which gets annoying after a while. The 2 tests are short answer and you can do well if you study a lot. Not good if you are looking for a genuinely good professor. But you can end with with a B or C
By far my favorite class & professor! If you can, absolutely take Seth. You'll have to read a lot but he makes the material interesting. Essays can be tough but if you ask for help he'll be happy to. Class is always entertaining.
This was hands down the hardest class i have ever taken. WAY to much for a gen ed. All his tests are short answer and no multiple choice so unless you're planning on being a history major, DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is very vague and unclear when answering questions. 10/10 would NOT recommend. I just saved your gpa, you're welcome.
This guy rambles on the whole class about stuff you will never remember. The work load is way too much for a 102 level GenEd. He gives an annotated bibliography assignment for an essay that you don't even write. This is by far the most boring, pointless, and difficult GenEd I have ever taken. His final is also just ridiculous.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
im horrible at history but i had to take this class for credit. i didnt really do so hot on his exams but he gives weekly quizzes that sort of helped my grade. ( DO THE READING/ HE GIVES YOU THE ANSWERS ON CANVAS ALMOST). final exam is ridiculously hard..
He doesn't care about you unless you actually enjoy history. Makes racial jokes throughout his lectures. Rambles on about stuff you will never remember. No help at all if you ask for help, he will waste your time at his office hours. Tough grader, all his tests and quizzes are short answer. Unless this all sounds okay to you DO NOT TAKE
This class was a lot harder than it needed to be. He never taught us how to write an essay, yet he expected us to perform well on our final essay which was part of our final exam.
Very funny guy. Lectures are very informative and entertaining. Class is pretty easy if you do the readings before each class. Content is very straightforward. His textbook is important, but don't buy the other required books immediately.
I'm not sure why Seth has such a low rating. He is extremely helpful and if you have the chance definitely go to his office hours because he will do everything he can to make sure you do well in the class. There is a quiz pretty much every class, but if you do the readings they are easy. The exams are harder, but not too bad. Take this class!
Seth is a great teacher as long as you go into class with an open mind, and know not to take the weird things he says seriously. Hes really funny and cares about his students. He can be a bit all over the place with lectures, but if you don't understand something he is very good about being available to answer question. I highly recommend his class
It is sad to say, but this professor was one of the reasons I left the university. If you are a freshman DO NOT take this course. His lectures are very irrelevant to his exams. He makes you memorize all the countries, I wasn't aware that it was a geography course? Honestly, was shocked I even passed his course.
Gives weekly online quizzes directly from study guides which really boosted my grade. A few geography quizzes too. His lectures are entertaining but he gets off topic a lot. If you go to his office hours he is super helpful! There's a bit of work but it's easy. Also the books for the class were super cheap
Professor Seth is a funny, genuine guy. However, class is completely pointless. You will have weekly quizzes and you will have to read to succeed. He's a pretty hard grader when it comes to essays but the quiz and midterms aren't too bad. Would recommend but be prepared to read.
Dr. Seth is great! Really funny and his lectures are great, although he sometimes will lose his train of thought in the middle of something. He is great are communicating overarching ideas and defining grade criteria. There are a lot of quizzes but VERY easy. He required attendance and regular updates on the final paper, but he's an easy grader.
Dr. Seth gives reading quizzes every week that are easy A's. The test and papers are what is challenging about the course because he is such a tough grader. All the test are short answers. There is a huge paper at the end and you are required to go to his office hours to work. My advice, if you take this class, become his best friend.
He had super boring lectures, and would go off on tangents and tell the same self-righteous stories about being a humanitarian aid worker in Africa over and over again. His weekly quizzes were unnecessarily difficult, and he gave no extra credit. If you're majoring/minoring in History or IDLS, DON'T TELL HIM because he'll make you do extra work.
Seth isn't too bad, he just tends to ramble about things that are seemingly irrelevant, but pay attention because a lot of topics that he briefly mentions are topics that are on the tests. He offers a lot of help and makes straightforward study guides for quizzes and tests. It is a pretty easy A, if you read and pay attention in class.
Overall good if you read the book. He rambles on for long periods of time which can be frustrating, but following the textbook will be helpful. Tests are generally easy because he virtually tells you what is going to be on it.
Great professor, taken him for two different HIST classes. Very funny, don't take his jokes seriously though! NEVER gives tests, occasional quizzes on reading and a few papers which are graded pretty hard, but the class is hilarious and fun.
Dr. Seth is the best professor I've taken at JMU. He truly cares about his students grades and will help you do well if you put in the extra mile. Tests are super easy because he tells you exactly whats going to be on them. This semester I received 11 extra credit points for going to certain events. He makes lectures interesting and funny.
Micheal Seth is a hilarious guy but do NOT take him seriously or you could get offended in his class. I have always hated history and he made it easy and enjoyable. By far the easiest class I've taken, easy to BS, easy quizzes and tests and one essay. There were multiple extra credit opportunities (I got a total of 9 points in extra credit).
HE'S A CRAZY OLD MAN. Had me write a research paper 5 times just because it wasn't exactly how he liked it. The quizzes are easy and straight out the course pack but the exams are very hard and the papers are graded harshly. Lots of reading of primary and secondary documents (books you have to buy). I do NOT recommend this class to anyone!
Although he is quite funny in class, he is literally the definition of a crazy old man. Homework is not too bad, however, sometimes he "forgets" to mention when assignments are due. He requires you to come to his office hours when it comes to writing the 8 page paper and beware because he might roast you in front of 5 other students.
I honestly don't know why his rating is as high as it is. Yes, he's funny if you're into crude humor, but he honestly just rambles through the 50-minute class and then expects you to memorize random stuff he says! He will say the assignment/quiz is on one thing and then whip out something completely different. My GPA did not enjoy this class.
This class was a good 50 minutes, 3 times a week of just sitting there and "listening" to his lectures. Half the time he tells his own personal stories, and the other half he is telling stories about the person or subject the PowerPoint is on. I don't feel like I have learned anything in this class and he can be very rude and blunt at times.
Quizzes ever week, they are very easy and short. All of the answers are on the power points he posts. 3 or 4 exams a semester. Pretty easy just make sure you look at the study guides he gives you, they are basically the exam. Has a weird sense of humor, but you get used to it. He says attendance is mandatory, but he forgets sometimes.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Tests and papers are graded harshly. Very boring lectures that will put you to sleep. 3 Tests and a 5 page research paper. Would not recommend.
BORING LECTURES. he goes way off topic majority of the time. Grades super hard. I won't not recommend this professor.
This guy just rambles on about things that have nothing to do with the class in his lectures. Then gives you a study guide with terms you haven't been over and expects you to know all of them for the test. He is a harsh grader and not very helpful if you go see him. He gives you a five pager research paper. save your time take another class
Dr. Seth has a large knowledge of history, and a lot of stuff in general, and loves teaching. He has a lot of funny stories and jokes around a lot w, his students. There's a lot of reading which you discuss during class. A lot of the readings have summaries online if you're lazy, like me, or too busy to read. Grades fairly I'll get a B+ w/ no work
Hes hilarious and the material truly sticks because all his lectures are random and hell most likely blame the Irish for everything and rant about America
Seth is a funny guy who gives weekly online quizzes that are straight from his course pack and the study guides. You take 2 mid term exams and write one paper that is graded VERY heavily.
Dr. Seth lectures heavily and gets off topic often. He gives weekly quizzes based off the readings and powerpoints. He assigns one 5 page research paper; harsh grader on all assignments.
Taking a class with Michael Seth is definitely an experience. His humor and demeanor aren't for everyone, but overall I found him to be a good professor. He gave clear instructions and good feedback on the papers, and he is so knowledgeable about all kinds of things -- not just History. Definitely a great choice for this class!
Loved Seth, old and adorable but also will work with you! You have to write a paper about any subject you want. He requires you meet with him to discuss it and is very helpful and non-judgmental! You could bring only an outline and he will talk to you for 30 minutes about how to write it! So fun, absolutely would take again!
Dr. Seth was a pretty cool guy. Every week we had an online quiz on material from the course pack that he made. The tests weren't terrible if you studied. This class definitely involves homework and reading to get the material down. He did a lot of "quizzes" in class and then never collected them. Not a bad class.
Professor Seth is unclear about his expectations on assignments, is constantly off topic, and grades far too harshly for a gen-ed. Additionally, he randomly decides to give extra assignments not listed in the course syllabus. (Why have a syllabus if you don't follow it?) I would advise against taking his course.
He talks about the most random things in class and barely goes over the course material. But he does take attendance. When grading he wants it to be EXACTLY how he wants it and even that can be wrong sometimes.
Dr. Seth knows his material well but goes off on long tangents during class and rarely talks about course material. Be sure to read the course pack and take the weekly online open note quizzes and you'll do fine. He can be REALLY picky about what he wants for essays but if you show it to him in office hours before its due, he will go over it.
Seth is a funny guy who lectures a lot and assigns a few papers. His lectures are sometimes off topic, and he jokes around often. Outside of class, he will help you with papers and revise them for you. While Seth is sometimes off topic in his lectures, he is willing to help outside of class, and if you get to know him outisde, you should be fine.
I liked him. He wasn't very hard at all but he was so vague about what he wanted in his essays, his grading seemed really random to me. You will most likely get a B if you put in some effort in his class. He tends to go off topic during lectures and babbles a lot. He annoyed me sometimes ngl.
Lectures are disorganized/unrelated to the class but attendance is still mandatory. He tests on stuff he never mentioned once so read the course pack. Also grades extremely harshly on papers and provides no rubric or explanation for the grade given. Seth can be a funny guy but he's unclear and often unreasonable. Take someone else if you can.
No. No. No. Professor Seth is honestly the worst professor I've had. His lectures are so boring and he does not grade by any specific criteria. Nothing in class is online, everyone is turned in manually. The final was impossible, and he sets completely unreasonable expectations. I worked so hard in this class and could not get above B- DO NOT TAKE!
Professor Seth is the best teacher that I had so far. He's so funny. This class is easy to pass if you show him your efforts in his class. No test during class. Quizzes every quiz but it's easy if you read the book. I just really loved and enjoyed his class. He also gives you a lot of chances to get extra credit. Really good teacher. RECOMMEND!!
His coursepack is interesting ,much better than reading from a textbook. Having said that, I never knew what to expect from him. He is very strict on how to present your short answers and essays. I was told to not explain the terms but got points taken off for not defining some terms. If writing essay isn't your strong point, don't take him.
I'm not good at history but I figured it couldn't be that hard, i mean it was gen ed history. it was a summer class that was also 4 credits condensed into 4 weeks. We had graded daily discussions, and i would literally work on them for hours and still not do it right. he expects such long answers for vague questions
LITERALLY RUN. Professor Seth was one of the most difficult professors I've ever had at JMU. Seriously, the man cannot take any other approach other than his own. Unless you write the way he likes it, you won't get a good grade. Trust me, save the time and look for someone else.
Dr. Seth is the most interesting profs I have had. The class is basically graded on one huge paper. I am in his office once or twice a week for help and he tells me to do one thing and the next time he will tell me it's wrong. There are online quizzes due every Monday, which are pretty easy is you read the textbook and the powerpoint.
Prof. Seth can seem like a tough teacher at times but his reading is pretty easy and cheap books. If you go to his office hours, show up to class, and show him effort he will return the favor. As a freshman at JMU this was a good Gen-Ed
Dr. Seth is a god among men. He is the best professor I've ever had. You don't just memorize facts because he actually discusses history and how it applies. He is knowledgeable, and hilarious. He sarcastically comments on everything from Communism to the Dutch. He'll also tell you insane personal stories that are endlessly quotable. TAKE HIM!!!!!
MJ Seth is so experienced in his field and he really makes you think about the world. His discussions are worth listening to, sit in the front and be engaged he will make the class fun for you. You will learn a lot from him. He is a hard grader but how else do you expect to learn. TAKE HIM HES SO PERSONABLE.
Professor Seth stepped in for our original professor due to unfortunate circumstances. He was the absolute best. He's really funny and really cares about the students. He doesn't turn anyone who needs help away. Very passionate about the subject.
Highly recommend any of Dr. Seth's classes, his lectures are very enjoyable and if you take advantage of his office hours you'll do well on the papers. He'll tell you exactly what he's looking for and he's incredibly knowledgeable on everyones research topic. He also cancelled class one day and had a "make up" class at a mexican restaurant
Dr. Seth is a confusing man. The comments he makes during lectures are just sarcasm but still sort of unnecessary and distracting. His papers don't have super clear guidelines. He goes on off-topic tangents in class a lot too. Overall though, it is a pretty easy class as long as you go over papers with him in office hours beforehand.
Went to office hours multiple times for help with a paper and it was not helpful for my grade. He is a tough grader and assigned things without a clear rubric. He wrote comments on my final paper that were unrelated to my paper or grade and were personally about me (negative things). Lectures were interesting though.
Dr. Seth is a god among men, and you won't fully get it until you take him. The lectures are pointless, but just go because he "says" he does attendance. The big research paper was cancelled because of COVID, so that was good. For the final he had us write two papers, and I didn't like that. A flaw is he doesn't give good feedback.
The class itself is not difficult, however Seth is never clear on his grading criteria. You can do everything on an assignment, yet receive a bad grade. But, you can bs an assignment and receive a good grade. He is the oddest grader i've ever had. In addition, he cannot see, so your attendance grade will go down.
Dr. Seth is great as a person. But his class is not the only thing going on in students' lives. Not every student has questions cause some just need to pass or get a grade. He says he is there to help you, but it seems more like he's trying to force his help on to you. Also wants your answers to be more than what he asks of you.
You have one semester long paper to write he breaks down in steps. Other than that I was so bored and not happy in this class. He doesn't lecture on topic, can be rude at times, and does not allow ANY electronics. Quizzes before every class that can help your grade. Take someone else if at all possible.
Dr. Seth was okay. His lectures were kinda pointless and attendance was mandatory just to listen to him stand up there and talk about his random vacations to Africa and stuff. Our final paper was cancelled bc of covid but I wasn't sure what to do on it anyway because he never really told us. Very old fashioned. Probably should take someone else!
Dr. Seth is a great guy, but I could see why he wouldn't be everyone's favorite. I had him fall of 2020, so we started out in person then shifted to online once a week. You must read his textbook and attend class. Class is pointless, you learn primarily from reading the book he wrote but attendance is mandatory. It's honestly pretty easy though.
Took over summer bc I'm interested in Korea. You read txt book, watch videos/movie and have daily discussion questions on them. It was hard bc you had discussion questions every day (only 24h before locked). He says min 5 sentences for each question, but to answer fully (and get full points), just write a lot more that that. Final were 2 essays.
Amazing all around! My favorite professor!!
This teacher is funny and he makes the material fun to learn sometimes. But he just tells us his life stories, makes it hard to focus. We have 2-3 discussion posts a week and a quiz, for the discussion posts he kind of just wants you to reword his textbook (he wrote it) and post that or watch some videos. Overall, not a hard class, just annoying.
Very easy class; honestly I just skimmed through the assigned readings and got 100's on the homework. Only negative is that at times he brings up his political views and gets off track, which takes away from lectures.
At times he was decent at best, but most of the time, professor Seth was rude and snarky. He is not clear on grading WHATSOEVER. Does not provide a clear rubric for anything, including presentations. Gives a decent amount of work, but not too much that a student can't handle. Overall, not a hard class, but be prepared to get annoyed w/him.
The class itself is not difficult. Work consists of a discussion board on videos, one on reading, and then a quiz each week. There was a presentation thrown in there and two final papers. Seth is not for everyone; his humor often came off as rude and he's made a handful of students cry. Easy class, rude professor, but sometimes he did make me laugh
MJ is extremely knowledgable about his course materials, but is very particular about grading and blunt in his feedback. Stick to/live by the Coursepack he requires for class when it comes to homework assignments and you'll be fine. He also isn't the best with technology and often asks you to repeat yourself several times.
Seth was probably my least favorite professor. He could be funny at times, but overall he was very rude, sarcastic, and belittling towards his students. He would give horrible feedback and even if you tried fixing something he would still say it's wrong. The whole class relies on the coursepack, so if you follow that you can coast by and be fine.
Dr. Seth is highly knowledgeable and very funny, would defiantly recommend.
Dr. Seth was not only a poor professor (never gave clear grading criteria, class ran about 0.5-1 hours late, harsh grading, poor scheduling, boring lectures), but also just a terrible person. He threatened to have me removed from class multiple times, yelled at me on zoom, and never showed up to multiple office hours. He left me crying all semester
He was a good professor in my opinion. He has many little assignments that are easy to get points from, with the exception of the two small papers you do. He means well and can be funny at times, but sometimes he does not understand when he is a bit rude. He has his own course book, which is very helpful depending on the assignment.
Seth is absolutely hilarious, I was so bummed when we went online because I looked forward to his classes. He had the entire class dying laughing. DO NOT go on your phone- he will embarrass you infront of the class. He has his rules, dont break them and your fine. Tests and quizzes are extremely easy. He requires meetings regarding research paper
Dr. Seth was amazingly intelligent and I loved his class on North Korea. Would highly recommend.
He wants you to have your camera on at all times. Also, he calls on people randomly during every class which is very annoying. I have never gotten worse rubrics for papers in my life.
Not a bad guy despite what some reviews say. Just have your camera on during class and get all the work done on time (most of it is due at 7AM on the days of class). Likes to jokingly poke at some students and does make some pretty funny remarks not gonna lie. As long as you put some effort in and show him that you care he'll take notice.
Professor Seth made a lot of snarky comments to students about them not turning on cameras during online lectures, and belittles them to make sure they are paying attention. Most people taking this class do it for a gen ed, and for that, he makes you work more than any 4 credit class I have taken, when its only 3. He gives bad feedback on papers.
Grades are based on weekly quizzes and discussions with 3 papers, 1 as midterm and 2 for final. No tests but he grades the papers pretty harshly just follow directions for them. He does take attendance and you lose participation every time you miss class which does affect your grade. An overall nice guy put in the effort and you will be ok.
This class was okay. We read a chapter each week (long and super dense), took an easy quiz, wrote LONG discussion posts to which his grading was unpredictable. Not hard to get full points though once you know what he wants. Lectures were more like rants that we didn't need to pay attention to. Seth means well but can come off as rude sometimes.
Michael Seth is notorious for holding grudges. He told the entire class how awful our introductions were for our final essays and said they were full of gross generalizations about American history, but he only let us use 120 words. I was receiving all A's in the class until I missed a meeting with him and everything after was a C or B. Don't take!
Doesnt remember things easily. Gets mad about miscommunication when its his fault.
he is just overall mean, if you use your own writing style you will fail. one paper and random "quizzes" so make sure to show up to class. DONT even think about looking at your phone because he will terribly embarrass you in front of the class. you have to write a like 8 page paper using no websites only books and all I have to say is good luck.
He is horrible. Lecture heavy and his powerpoints don't help for any of the quizzes he assigns. Do not take!
He gets mad at people for using electronic devices in his class and yes hell call you out in the middle of the class. Off topic quite frequently. Hes a very TOUGH GRADER and homework quizzes are easy as long as you go over his slides. However, hes a nice person and very passionate about history
He's all over the place. Weird class. There's one paper that takes all semester and even if you write word-for-word what he says, you'll still get a 50% and be told "this doesnt make sense". The weekly chapter quizzes aren't too bad but the in-class pop quizzes are so confusing. Nothing he does has structure to it, so you better be flexible!
Just don't. Big paper hard to please, just not really that fun...
Get ready for long lectures that half the time aren't about the material but what he has done in his life. Sometimes his jokes hit, but a lot of the time they are insensitive to the time and people around him. He's not a bad teacher or person, but his style of teaching leaves a lot to be desired.
Professor Seth is very educated in history and you can really tell he's passionate about what he does but he does tend to kind of rant instead of teach. I haven't retained any information from his lectures and honestly think it's a waste of time to go to class even though it's mandatory. He also calls people out in class so beware of that.
Seth isn't a bad person, but he's very traditional and doesn't have much care for anything outside of his class. Nothing is a good enough excuse for missing his class, but sometimes he'll let you make in-class assignments up if he's in a good mood. Be prepared for random quizzes in class and funny but insensitive jokes.
Dr. Seth can be a really funny, intelligent professor. However, hes terrible at communication and is strict grader. Overall, I enjoyed his class, but this isnt an easy A.
Mr Seth is the worst teacher I have ever encountered. He makes us take random pop quizzes that never make sense, he calls you out in the middle of class to "meet him after class" to only ask what your name is and never give you a reason for why he called you out. He is rude and is the toughest grader I have ever had FOR A GEN ED COURSE. AVOID HIM!!
Professor Seth is a nightmare!! His lectures are impossible to follow, he gets off-topic and just ends up ranting for the majority of the class. He makes incredibly insensitive jokes and is just overall rude. There are pop quizzes ALL THE TIME, and a paper that he grades very tough. This class was so unnecessarily hard for a gen ed. Beware!!!!
Literally the worst professor and nobody knew what was going on in the class at all. He expects you to know everything yourself and doesnt actually teach anything. No exams just weekly quizzes, lots of pop quizzes, and huge papers but he grades them so hard. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!
As a history major; this man does not deserve to teach. Also favors history majors and takes them on a special trip. He told me that I do not appreciate history and should change my major...just because I said I wasn't passionate about asian history..Has absolutely no structure, quizzes are extremely specific, and is offensive to POC. AVOID
Don't count on him being in his office during the stated office hours because he won't be there. he tends to get off topic really easily, and his expectations when grading papers and other assignments changes. He likes you if you participate, but his sense of humor is very sarcastic, and it's hard to tell when he's kidding
MJ Seth is extremely funny. Says a lot of out of pocket things however, his grading policy is pretty good. When I took him all of our quizzes were online which made the class so easy. You take 0 tests and write 1 research paper. His final is based off a take home part and a world map that you label. The final part he has you write an essay.
Professor Seth is very passionate about Korea and the class is interesting, but this can be a tough class. It is hard to understand exactly what he wants when doing discussions and papers because he constantly contradicts himself through emails and assignments. And when you ask for clarification, he does not answer it.
This class is decent. The lectures are kind of boring, and the professor will make really insensitive jokes (having us color maps and labeling China as yellow in every one of them) but other than that he's fine. Buy the coursepack and you will literally have all the information you need for every test, which are all open-note.
avoid this professor if you can. he's a tough grader, lots of pop quizzes and map quizzes, lectures are extremely unorganized, and he gave me a zero out of 50 points for turning in a paper 15 minutes late and refused to let me pass it in with a late grade. He's very insensitive and has made off color jokes regarded people of color and women.
Seth is a good person, he just doesn't show it in his teaching. You often will have to second guess yourself since he will sometimes forget to tell instructions related to an assignment or what's due. His grading style is unique, as he will often mark your paper only for him to give it an 8/10. Make sure you attend his office hours.
Prof Seth is really funny and his lectures aren't too bad. If you do take this class just beware, you will have a quiz every week and sometimes he has more quizzes on top of that weekly ones. Sometimes the instructions he gives for an assignment aren't super clear.
Dr. Seth was such a fun teacher. I had him for a major class, so if history isn't your thing, Seth may not be the professor for you. Lots of little assignments kept my grade up, no quizzes or tests, only a final (which we went over the answers before). Super easy and helpful class, loved Dr. Seth, and totally recommend
Lectures are useless everything you need to know is in the course-pack. Final exam outline is all over the place. Selective grader sometimes tries sometimes just gives random score.
Class was good, but lectures were a repeat of the reading you had to do for homework from the course pack he wrote. Attendance is mandatory he has the TA take attendance. If you show up on days where there are not many people he will add a 2 point quiz to your grade book. As long as you meet with him for your paper and do the work you will do well.
This class is easy if you go to class. Weekly quizzes that are online and have unlimited time. Will have at least 5 quizzes (label map, textbook). One essay that you work on throughout the entire semester, you work on it slowly and it isn't difficult. At the end of the semester, you will present your essay which is easy.
this class was boring. the papers are worth majority of your grade and he's a tough grader, I got a bad grade on one paper and my overall grade dropped by over 10 points. the lectures are boring and you get points taken off your attendance grade if you don't show up to class. he's nice I just hated his class.
I did not like this professor at all. He is unbelievably rude. We had a student pass away from our class and he said "He obviously had problems he just couldn't handle". Just seems like not that good of a person and will embarrass people in class.
Prof Seth's lectures can be dry, but the coursepack has everything you need. Use unstuckstudy ai and stay on top of the weekly quizzes to do well. Overall, a decent class if you put in the work.
Very funny in lectures, makes them somewhat interesting. He does make his TA take attendance. Not at all afraid of embarrassing students so be prepared to respond. Will make fun of you, but I found that after I responded with something equal in attitude, he stopped picking on me. Pretty easy class, would recommend.
Professor Seth is funny and you can tell he cares about history but he is an awful professor. He's very insensitive and makes off color jokes regularly in class and his lectures are so painfully boring. He usually just talks about random stuff for 30 minutes then crams the material in the last 20. He's also a really hard grader especially for gened
He is an amazing professor, he is very passionate about history and he doesn't test you heavy. It is mainly weekly online quizzes that are straight from his course pack. He is a semi tough grader when it comes to papers, but he is willing to work with you on it and wants you to succeed. I defiantly recommend him if you need to take this course.
This course material isn't hard at all. He lectures all class long which isn't horrible, just a little boring. It's easy to get a good grade in this course. The professor is funny and he is caring. I highly recommend going to his office hours and meeting with him…it might help your grade!
his class is pretty funny and he is too, he says some insensitive stuff to everyone. it isnt that hard of a class, there is a weekly reading quiz but it is all found in the corsepack. there is one research paper and presnttaion that you work on throughout the year. there are a few map quizzes. i would take him again but just know about his "jokes"
Lectures were rarely on topic and he expects the textbook to teach for him. Attendance is very mandatory. Makes wild jokes that are often insensitive but likes to have fun. Basically no tests, weekly quizzes are open note, and gives good feedback on projects. Over all the class was so easy that it made up for his teaching and is an easy A.
Michael Seth is definitely a character. His sense of humor is definitely outdated, but he is pretty funny throughout his lectures as he is super out of pocket for a teacher. He contradicts himself a lot regarding assignments so just do your work fully. His lectures do not provide much attention as he yaps about random things at times.
This guy is hilarious, take him if you can!! Reading quizzes that are easy and interesting. Made us write a “paper” that was really just one paragraph and a slideshow. If you don't get the grade you want on a major assignment he strongly encourages and suggests you redo it. Gave everyone a 100% on the mid-term and most pop quizzes
Meet with him a few times and be on his good side and you will be good
Probably the most hilarious and outta pocket professor at the university. This guy says some crazy things and isn't afraid to embarrass you infront of the whole class. Overall an easy course, just take the weekly quizzes and do what he asks and you'll be fine.
He's very passionate about history but doesn't really teach it. He goes on long rants about the most random things and you can never tell when he's serious or just joking around. His grading is all over the place and criteria for assignments is really confusing.
I have zero clue what was going on in this class because he is such a confusing teacher. He doesn't usually lecture but goes on long random rants. However, it was the easiest class ever and he spoon feeds you the answers to pop quizzes and the final. As long as you participate in class he will give you a good grade.
Big on attendance and no phones
Professor Seth will give you the most unforgettable and funny class! He prepares you well for each quiz by telling you the questions and goes over the answers the class before. He writes the textbook himself, so it's word for word with what he says in class. He is a tough grader, but put in effort and follow directions and you'll be fine.
The work isn't too hard but there is a lot of it. Attendance is graded and he is very strict about it so make sure you show up. He just yaps for the whole class and barely teaches but expects us to read the textbook (he wrote).
Dr. Seth is nice and he cares about his students. He is strict on attendance and missing one class can affect your grade. He does offer make up assignments that are due 7 days after the class you missed. If there are a lot of people who missed class he will usually give a pop quiz. His lectures are disorganized and he will go on random tangents.
He's okay. You need to come to class and sometimes gives pop quizzes based on attendance. Should be an easy class but it requires a lot. Does give some extra credit near the end. Do your work and show up and you should get an A but lectures are so boring
never again. run. take anything else. had like a 90 but bro changed the syllabus half way through the semester and attendance brought it down to a 48. attendance should never be that deep.
This was a pretty chill class. He's is a little bit senile/hilarious. Lectures are mostly bs and you can goof off the whole class. Attendance is mandatory, but makeups for missing are super easy. Quizzes and tests are pretty straight forward. Homework is easy and it's not that hard to keep a good grade. There is a textbook but you don't need it.
Genuinely has no idea how teach or actually have a genuine conversation often forgets things afford him at all costs.
yaps so much. he wrote the entire textbook you use for the class sooo just know that. he sucks at teaching, is super tough grader for a gen ed class, weekly quizzes, now that we are almost in finals week he has decided to do another in person quiz every single class for the final three weeks. bro is so lost doesnt even know how to work powerpoint
did not follow the syllabus. constantly going on rants. very frankly was rude to students. unfair grader. pop quizzes when he felt there wasn't enough people in class. didn't let me use my ODS accommodations bc he said it was too much technology for me to go back in and take something on canvas. not clear criteria for classes.dreaded this class ngl
I dislike him but I think it's just personal beef. He singled me out and I've held a grudge since. The work itself is rather easy, but he takes off 5 points every time you're absent, which can really bring your grade down. He's also just flat out rude sometimes. He's not horrible if you do what he asks and have the patience to deal with him.
I hate him. One of the worst professors I have had at JMU so far. He knows what he's talking about but just teaches it in the most terrible way. Attendance is mandatory and if he thinks there isn't enough people there he will give pop quizzes. Final was sm work an at home essay and two in class essays on paper 600 words each. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Professor Seth was hilarious. He did at times go off on rants about random things but overall, everything is well. Not hard to get an A or B in that class, just show up for attendance. He does take -5 points off for tests but you can make them up easily for full credit back. Easy quizzes. He does joke a lot, just know that hes just kidding.
Doesn't follow syllabus, rambles and sometimes rudely calls out students. Lectures were very scrambled. The work was all easy, but he made us do a two part final just to end up not grading it and factoring it into our grade. Wasn't an awful class for a gen-ed cluster thats known to have some hard classes, but maybe try and find another professor.
