Starts out appearing difficult, but as the semester progresses it really becomes fun. Still quite stressful! As for the easiness of getting an A...boy do you have to work hard for it!
join the fun!
You don't come across teachers like Mike very often. He has a way to cause exploration of many different points of views.A lot of techincal things to learn, but his class is more like a workshop where students create the class.A great experience!
There's HELLA work in there, but very fun, do all the work and u'll get a good grade. There were no C's in the summer class, few B's, GREAT TEACHER

Mike is a great teacher even if the book he uses is not. He is extremely helpful, well informed & is willing to communicate with students, or the whole class, about concepts that are not understood. I am looking forward to taking another class with him next semester! Not an easy A but you learn alot
I managed an A, pretty easily. A lot of work is involved, he has higher expectations than other Public Speaking teachers. Can be unclear in his description of assignment expectations. Avoid him if you can, but you aren't doomed if you get him.
Two bad ratings removed from this teacher in the last week on this site. Who knows how many other negative ratings removed at this site. Avoid this instructor at all costs.
This is absolutely the worst teacher ever. Assigns way to much work for a comm. class and is horriblly rude to his students. He lets his emotions get to him in the class which effects his grading. I would never reccomend this teacher to anyone. He should not even be allowed to teach.
The class had a 35-50 page paper. Groups should have 4 members not 6. Only 1 of 4 groups in my class w/ >4 members was harmonious at that size. 1 group member ditched the final speech, 1 group had a member drop in late November, & I could tell 1 group wished an underachieving member hadn't shown up.
This teacher was the least bit helpful and pretty much let the class teach their self. Therefore, I did not learn anything in this class. The teachers grades on group performance so even though you put a lot of effort into your work, you can still fail the class. Warning** Do not take this professor
I had him a few years ago for 2nd 9 week class. He wasnt too bad. I didnt put a lot of effort and ended up with a c.
Mike is not an easy A. Be prepared to learn and relax your notions of individualism. Very valuable stuff for real life applications. Put in 3 H/W hrs per class hour--you'll do fine. No spoon-feeding here, just high-level education.
The class has a lot to do with real world. He expects a lot. Lots of outside time with groups. If you do your work you will get a decent grade. Don't take him if you want an easy A, but you can earn an A if you do all the work and extra credit.
Tough class, but I learned a lot. Expects perfect speeches, but everyone improved a lot. Liked the class environment and my group. Expects a lot of group work and must always be there. If you do the work you can get an A.
Having taken him before, I basically knew what to expect. He is a good teacher. He expects you to learn & to understand the concepts. He is willing to help when you are in need of it & not just for the pretty girls like some students believe, I am NOT one of them & he has always been helpful to me
Dreaded this class! Still don't like the class but loved the teacher. You know where you stand and if you do the work and show up you will get a good grade. I look forward to class just because of him. You can't be lazy in this class!
Severson gives the same as you are willing to devote. He is always willing to do extra to help you get a better grade and learn more. Also he has an awesome method of helping you to find the answers for yourself rather than feeding them to you. One of the best teachers here.
Severson is a good teacher. Gives quiz's every class, but as long as you read the book assigned, its pretty easy. Was very helpful and understanding of personal situations. Exams are easy, as long as you take good notes and your group works together.
horriable professor, doesn't know where is is going is unclear about assignments until they r due. if you want to lower ur gpa then take severson!
First of all, whoever said he is hot is crazy. But anyway, he is a good teacher, and the only people that i hear complaining about him, are the people that do not work hard and prepare well for speeches. Do the work, and the ton of extra credit that he offers and you could get an A.
Always was easy to talk with, reasoned about due dates, assignments, whether tests should be take home or not, asked for our input often. Open to ideas, great flexibilty in some areas. Overall mellow guy, looks/acts somewhat like a former child of 60's.
Tough requirements for a speech class, but definately pushed us to do our best. If you do the work, you get the A. Plan on lots of research and study time. Definately prepares you for upper division classes. Great teacher! Always willing to help a student along if they are willing to do the work.
He is a good teacher. Def. not an easy one though. It should be a 5 unit class. But he made it interesting and fun. Dont take the class if you dont want to work hard though.
I took this class thinking it was an easy A. I WORKED for my A. I found his class very helpful and interesting-never boring. Don't take this class if you don't want to work. IT IS ALOT OF WORK - but worth it. Severson was there for me whenever I needed help or advice, I would take him again. Gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Great teacher..
Do not take any of his classes; you will be setting youself up for dissapointment. He is easy to talk to, but very ego centric. His tests are VERY HARD. He uses different verbage that is not from the book in class. DO NOT take his classes.
Professor Severson is a tough teacher, but definately a challenge. It is not an easy A, but if time and work is put into the class, the possibilities of success are endless. I not only gathered helpful and useful information to utilize in the future of my college life, but also my personal life. "Don't be a sheep, SEVERSON thanks for LITERACY.
You can really learn a lot in this class because its so hard. Tests dont match the verbage in the book or notes sometimes. He is very good a communicating.
I found this class very challenging but very fulfilling. He gave us a practice speech where I was able to make mistakes and not get dinged for it. To get an A in the class take advantage of the extra credit he gives for going to the lab and for extra
He's pretty easygoing and likes to make things simple. He's alright and his class really isn't difficult in the slightest.
Very hard grader. Public speaking is tough, and he makes it that much more difficult. Dont plan on reading speeches or missing class. He is a tough teacher, but not a "bad" one. Dont expect an easy A or B even if youre good at it.
He needs to get his head checked!
His educational philosophy coincided with most of his students. I did not find him to be helpful as a professor or as an educator.
Great professor! He makes the horrid art of public speaking seem easier, and he lets you work in groups. His tests are challenging, so be sure to study for those!
It's not worth it! I wold not reccomend him to anyone! He is notorious for having, "a different way of seeing things than most," according to the counselors; in other words people often disagree with the way he grades things. Way too much work for a 3 unit class. Just ask other teachers or counselors what they've heard.
I wouldn't recommend him! It is way too much of hard work for 3-unit class. We spent too much time in groups, out of class meetings. He also has problems with grading! Likes to talk about his son.
I thought his class was great! It was a lot of work but he gave a lot of help and his office door was always open and willing to help by keeping in touch by email. I would definatley recomend him! I feel that anyone who thought his class too hard, well they just didn't try hard enough. His class challanged the student to think and I liked that!
I WOULD NOT take his class his philosophy of teaching conflicted with many of his student if you miss any classes dont expect him to accept any excuses even if they are legit.
Mr. Severson is a very good teacher. I took him 3 semesters in a row. He finds ways to get you interested and get's everybody involved in the lectures so it becomes interesting. He does expect work from you and to attend to class, but believe me if you don't walk out that class with at least a b, than you really didn't try at ALL!!
Yeah, this guy knows his stuff, I believe him to be helpful, not easy but not tough. Just show up to class and have the work done. His tests are based entirely on his in-class notes, almost exactly, but you need to explain all your answers to get the questions right. It is easy to do poorly in the class, stay up on the work, the tests are his notes
I would look elsewhere for a comm professor he is not clear and many students had difficulty with him.
Do all your homeworks, and you will get an A. Great teacher.
Not good. Boring. Didn't feel comfortable in his class.
Michael is GREAT! He is knowledgeable, funny, and energetic. You can get an A if you work for it. He cares about his students, both in and out of class. He is more than willing to commit a great deal of time of energy to help us succeed. His help is essential in my admission to Both Columbia and Berkeley Haas. Don’t miss out, take his class.
Very tough class. LOTS of group work outside of class. Two presentations that wasnt too tough. Tests and quizes are from the notes and book. Keep up with the reading! 50 page portfolio took 40 hours of group time. Overall i am still glad i took this class even though i had to work my ass off. Severson is a pain sometimes but he's still a cool teach
Very streight forward with info. In a group setting he let us have our space and our group hung oursleves. He sees right through everything and knows whether you spent 10 minutes or 10 hours on a project. His short term group COMM clas was extremely difficult.
I consider myself as a good student, but I had difficulties with this teacher. He was very unreasonable and was not understanding towards his students. Even if you have a legit excuse in missing classes, he doesn't seem to care at all. A lot of work involved, not hard, but a lot of work. I wouldnt recommend him. He sorta gave me the creeps.
Enthuistac, Knowledgeable, Professionally Friendly
This class was not difficult for me but a lot of work. I think he is a decent teacher but difficult to deal with at times. I observed some interesting behavior with fellow students as well as myself. I think students can benefit from his teaching but he asks too many personal questions. I agree there is something creepy about him. Use caution.
Not environmentally friendly...Will mark you down if you print on both sides of your research paper. Give me a break! Cranks up the speed at end of semester to squeeze everything in.
Why does this instructor have a smiley when he has so many unacceptable ratings. He is unclear and confusing and changes up what he said origianlly.
Great Teacher, definitely recommend. Michael gets everyone involved in the class. Yet, be ready to work for your grade. Need help? he is available and approachable. Work hard and you can get an "A".
Lots of work. He has high expectations but if you do the work and follow directions you will get a good grade. He expects you to be there and has lots of quizzes on reading.
He did not clearly explain how to properly write outlines for any of the speeches. Did not clearly explain how to deliver any of the speeches. Grading was unconventional. The majority of the students in my class had problems with the teacher. Made strange remarks to students. I don’t recommend taking Severson’s class and I agree with the other pers
He can be a bit scatterbrained but keeps the class interesting. Has a wonderful ability to bounce off ideas with students and keeps up lighthearted tone. Laid back and flexible, if there is a problem he's more then willing to work things out with you. You are expected to do work and this class in particular since it is group communications is a cha
I enjoyed Severson's class a lot! It got me more comfortable with public speaking and I really enjoyed the way he teaches. If you do the work, you get the credit. Ya, if you miss too many classes he drops you, if you miss a speach he drops you.. but that's life! He will work with you if you have an acutal excuse though. I would recommend his class!
Instructor knows material. Tests are from the book. Do the homework and assignments and it is an easy grade.
I took his communications class during summer for the 4 week class and I really enjoyed it. He is somewhat of a challege at times but it really makes you think. I do not like speaking infront of a group, but he makes you come out of your shell. I hated the book, but his lectures make up for it. Take him though, he is an excellent teacher!
Never take this class from him. He and it will run your life. He expected our groups to meet at least 5 hours per week and at one point 20 hours over the course of a week and a half. Try getting four people with other classes and jobs together that many hours. For a communications prof. he has major clarity issues.
This class is BORING. He seems to lose patience with students and like the other student posted, has clarity issues with assignments.
Professor Severson is a great teacher. I'm in his class right now and I disagree with the comments posted. He's got a great sense of humor and appreciates students with senses of humor and he'll make you feel comfortable with speaking. ALL of his test are take home so you can use your book/internet (use the book). He's a great teacher, so take him!
Severson really wants you to improve on your public speaking skills, and the work definitely pays off. He grades tough, so take advantage of all of the extra credit opportunities he provides (there are a lot). Tests are take-home and open book. Get to know the people in your class, it makes the class 100 times more fun!!!
Not a very interesting class. also, i did not feel comfortable in his class. I'd take with another instructor.
His lectures are awesome, but he seems to be unaware that the students have other things to do in their lives and cannot spend all day, everyday, on exercises, reading and writing papers (interpersonal communication class). He also expects you to do things without giving you specific instructions. If he says to list something, explain every part.
It is true that Professor Severson is tough on grading (Public Speaking), but I learned so so much from him. It's definitely a class worth taking if you want to suceed in your future career! Overall I would give him an A+
His class involves way too much work for 3 units. He is very unclear about what exactly wants and gets upset if you ask him too many questions. He does not like males who voice their opinion and interact with the class. I would only take the class if you consider yourself a young, good looking, woman.
I took every single one of Severson's classes. As a comm major at a CSU I still can say hands down best prof I've ever had. Tough, but fantastic prof.
You either love him or hate him. As long as you work hard in his class, you'll get an A. For Interpersonal Communication, the midterms are usually a lot of memorization from the book. He does offer a lot of extra credit in open dialogs and a 50 point extra credit assignment in the end. If hes nice, he'll offer take home exams.
Severson is pretty harsh, your take on the class will really depend on your learning style, ADD stay away.
Prof. Severson holds a high standard. I found him to be lenient and understanding for some and he drew the line when he needed to. He attempted to inspire his students. however as in all college courses there where some who struggled and rose to the occasion and others who fell short. This is life. There should be more like M. Severson who don't
He's funny, invested in public speaking, and a little cocky. He'll have fun with his class, so the class has fun, and get everyone involved. Regular little easy quizzes. Not too much note taking. He's a firm grader, and his class demands a lot of time but is rewarding. You're 150% guaranteed to come our of his class a better speaker.
This Class was hard especially if you are a nervous public speaker, but it gets easier after every speech. He made the class very interesting. If you work hard do the extra credit and attend class you will get an A. He is very helpful and willing to work with you to make your speeches better. I would take him again!
His public speaking class will take a LOT of your time. It's not hard, but you have to practice, practice, practice to get a good grade. You'll also have to meet with other students outside of class time to work, so don't take this class if you have a really busy schedule. You need to read the textbooks for the take-home exams, but that's about it.
A brilliant man who has traveled much of the world. He expects a lot, but at the same time, he realizes that you are learning, making him an excellent teacher!
His lectures are interesting, he is very entertaining, good looking, challenges you..he grades harshly. In group communication class, my presentation was graded based on my public speaking abilities, which I never took Public speaking class before and really suck at! Also takes way too much group time outside the class.
Loved this class overall! Not too much work outside of class. Tests are take home and mostly straight from book. Interesting teacher, challenging speeches, but you will definitely come out of the class a better public speaker and researcher.
Mike likes to be considered a "hard" teacher. He likes to be considered "cool." He does not like to be challenged, questioned nor denied. He may know a good deal about the study of communications, but he lacks emotional maturity and balance. Not somebody that I would recommend.
Mr. Severson's class is not easy. Just cuz it's a comm class, don't assume it's easy.If you do the work, read, come to class, and study you will do fine. I enjoy taking his class.
This was a difficult course because I thought it would be "fluff". It's not. It has been one of the best courses I've ever taken. Very informative. Michael did a great job in his teaching, clarity, and expectations. IF you want to learn something, take this from him. IF you want to slack -off, find a different class. You have to work in his class
Something is not quite right about this guy. He like to be perceived as tough and diligent, yet he is completely immature and egotistical. If you can stay off his radar, you will be OK, but if he decides he does no not like you, watch out. I found him invasive, asking very personal questions.
Severson is a good professour. He knows about Communication, but could improve how he transmits that knowledge. Sometimes disorganized, which makes him sound or look ambiguous. May need to finish a course to connect the things he teaches you, which are 100% useful.
This was one of my favorite teachers. He had a lot of work, but was a very good teacher. He made sure to keep everyone interested. I recommend this class to all who would like to educate themselves and better their education.
Not an easy course, but be flattered that he thinks we are smart enough to be challenged. He asks you to think and grades with a real world agenda. If you put in the effort you will receive the reward of a good grade. Look forward to taking his class again. I have never rated a professor before but felt he was worth the time.
This guy told me in front of the whole class that I was doing so badly that I should just give up, and it was a week before the final, so too late to drop. Embarrassed and humiliated. With no other choice I gave the final speech anyway, but all confidence was shattered. Other reviewers are right, there is something wrong with this guy.
IF YOU ARE AN ATHLETE DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is the most egotistical individual I have ever meet. I have a 3.9 GPA. I'm a good student. And don't mind being pushed. But this guy is a joke. Trust me. Don't do it. He marked off two points for adding an extra letter to his name(what does this have to do with speech?) HORRIBLE DONT DO IT
You autofail this class if you miss a speech: you can have 102%, miss the penultimate speech, and by then it's too late to withdraw, and it doesn't matter how well you do on your final. The man is a very tough grader, for the fair reason of making his students improve. Do not take this class unless you can make it your top priority.
He has a desire to make you examine yourself. You must go into his class open-minded and willing to dig deep. If you do not take this class seriously, you will gain little from it. You will be put on the spot, so be prepared. He does this to help you, not insult you. He's funny and personable. I recommend him often.
Professor Severson was not easy, but if you worked hard, he was definitely fair. You have 4 major speeches in this class; be prepared right after to be critiqued in front of the whole class. However, don't be too worried; it will help you improve. I talked to him during office hours, and he was even nicer! He is helpful and cares about students.
This professor is a mixed bag. He can be understanding at times, but most of the time he is impatient and condescending towards students. It's obvious he is extremely cocky and thinks he knows everything. He thinks his directions are clear, but they're not. He plays favorites. Take him or leave him.
Mr. Severson is a great person and although he is a tough teacher, you will gain a lot from his classes. He will teach you not only about communication, but actually about yourself. Expect to work hard, but also to gain a lot of insight from his classes. Hands down my favorite professor at SCC.
Dont even know what to say. It seemed like the notes we took in class weren't even on tests. It was really pointless to have to show up for class. Cool teacher though.
Professor Severson is not a cool guy like others proclaim. He does not value your opinions and thoughts unless he agrees with it. His class is ridiculously toughly graded and he WILL pick favorites in the class so be prepared to kiss his ass as much as possible. Granted he will teach you a decent amount but be prepared for what comes with it.
He's a really tough grader. Unless you're naturally comfortable speaking publicly you're screwed, but public speaking is hard for a lot of people so his grading definitely doesn't help ease any of that anxiety.
Severson is tough. You cannot miss class. He wants you to take his class seriously. The grading is hard but I improved greatly at public speaking by semesters end. To me he was accommodating and professional and I loved how he makes you work in groups. Be wary though he is not an easy A.
Great professor. Very knowledgeable and experienced with years of Communication background. Class is definitely a challenge, but he gives you tools to help build your speech properly. May come off as a hard discerning professor, but is only giving students the ability to overcome obstacles through personal choices. Would rate 5 stars any day.
Unpleasant instructor. Arrogant, condescending to students. Don't believe positive ratings. Stay away!
The class is really interesting but the workload is also heavy. He assigns too much reading and expects you to know everything even when you have little time to do the 30 pg readings. His extra credit assignment is a ridiculous amount of work that you'd probably be better off without it. Not a very nice guy but he knows what he's talking about.
If you are at college to actually learn something, this class is right where you need to be. You will surprise yourself at the end with how much you have learned not just from the class, but from professor Severson as well. He will push you hard, but you will become a better speaker and a better student. He truely cares about your future success.
Hated giving speeches, but I can do it more comfortably now after this class. Many say that he's arrogant & so forth, but there's more than meets the eye. Once you get that 1:1 time to discuss topics w/him, you'll see what I'm talking about. He caters to each student. He cares about your performance in the class. You've just got to work for it!
Would not recommend taking his class! He does not explain things well, and when you ask for help he makes you feel dumb in front of the whole class. His grading is the worst, can't even explain what an "A" speech could sound like. Does not know how to be respectful to his student nor does he treat them like adults. DO NOT TAKE this class!!
I tried sitting through the class trying to learn the material for a good speech, however it was not enough to earn a decent grade in the class. Expand, expand, and expand is what he wants out of you.
Just no. Forget it. Don't even put yourself through the ridiculous pain. The work load is overwhelming!
If you're looking for a great teacher he is your guy. He pushes you to do better, his class is fun and interactive. If your looking for an easy "A" then keep looking. He wants the best for everyone. One on One with him changed my outlook towards the class in a lot of ways. You get what you put in. He does care about the students. Great class
Avoid him!! Super pompous, and he treats everyone in the class like they have Barack Obama's speaking skills, even though it's an intro class. I took the class mostly to fulfill a transfer requirement, but also to learn how to be more comfortable while speaking in front of people. But now I have more anxiety about public speaking then ever.
Assignments are complicated, directions unclear despite lengthy syllabus, instructor does not create helpful or encouraging class environment. Constant criticism does not help students, and constant criticism is what you will get from this instructor.
This class has prepared me for public speaking. If you want to learn and have something to take to upper division classes this is the class. If you are interested in insightful feedback to learn about yourself in public speaking then this is the class. This class is not for lazy people who want an easy grade.
Professor Severson is a great instructor. He is demanding of every student which supports us to succeed in this highly competitive college environment. His office hours helped me improve my speeches.
Personally he seems like a hard ass but when you approach him he does do his best to help. I took him my first year and he was hard, lots of work, hard quizzes, and a lot of reading. He grades you based on your effort so you need to take this class seriously. He will help you and depending how you are he may end up being your favorite professor
I just had him for the intro comm class, 301. At first he seemed like a hard ass and does expect you to work for your grade. But, overall he is a really cool teacher and definitely wants you to succeed. If you're looking for an easy A, don't go for him. If you're looking for a challenge I say do it. He was pretty cool, and really taught me a lot.
Do not. Please, if you must fulfill this requirement, take whoever else is teaching it. I went in disliking public speaking and went out fiercely determined to avoid any and all forms of it until I die. He's harsh, sometimes even rude to students, and disregards anything that students may have impeding class attendance/performance no matter what.
He is the worse teacher I ever taken. He doesn't know how to teach and he is so disorganized. He is not clear with homework and test. He grading is awful. He take points for little things. Don't take him.. He will give you hard time
Don't take him. Take anybody else except him. Skip this class. He is rude and disorganized. He doesn't help students at all. He wants to fail everyone
Provides unrealistic deadlines and expectations of work, assigning a huge group presentation over weekends and expecting groups to put in hours of time outside of class per week. Lectures are mandatory but an utter waste of time, reading you the textbook and goes over time. Syllabus is a suggestion to him. Have fun being docked points at random.
NOT an easy class. I took INTRO to public speaking and it was so much work. On top of that he's an extremely hard grader.
Awful at giving grading criteria for his equally awful exams, despite being take home/open book. I've been doing theater, sales, etc for years so public speaking comes naturally, but this class wasn't about public speaking. All I learned was the importance of pleasing an ego and working harder than necessary to get an A. Take anyone else.
My job was centered around public speaking. During an event, I had to draw a card about a random subject and do an on the spot speech in front of a bunch of people. I nailed it. But this class has ruined my confidence in public speaking. The topics are dumb, the grading is overly harsh, and I've become scared of even asking questions in my classes.
I wanted to like this class! He seemed fine in the beginning, good mood/funny. Somewhere along the way, things got really rough and he got really grumpy. Lots of reading and work involved with this class, speeches are hard. He's kind of a know it all and has no problem calling you out in front of the class and making you look stupid. I'd skip him.
I thought he was an easy teacher. You have to be willing to do the work to pass as with every class. I found it to be the easiest class out of all my classes. Most of the classes are filled with listening to other students present. In my opinion not a lot of work.
This class will take a lot of time. You have 4-5 speeches. Most require a 6-7 page outline, and 3 meetings with classmates outside of class. You have 5 lengthy take home exams, weekly pop quizzes, and a final essay that is 7-8 pages. I believe he sets the standards high, so we do our best. Do not expect leniency, you'll get "Welcome to College".
Regret taking him, been a nightmare all semester, can't wait for it to be over.
Severson does not come across as invested in his students at all, nor does he come across as invested in teaching in general. This characteristic extends right down to the fact that his handwriting is ILLEGIBLE and he will never respond to an important email. His grading is overly harsh and will make you fearful of, and hate public speaking.
Severson intimidates his students more than he actually teaches. He tests using materials from the book and his lecture. Book materials are very specific, and lecture materials are glossed over and not provided online. Overall, not a good choice for COMM 321.
Getting an A is possible, but you'll have to work your butt off for it. Grade is based on homework assignments for each of the ten chapters and tests he gives every 3-4 chapters. Test Q's come from lecture and textbook readings and are VERY specific. He grades hard too.
If you're thinking about taking this professor, DON'T. His class at first seems easy but then makes it completely hard. He marks you down a whole letter grade if you are even a second over or a second under the speech time limit. For the information and persuasive speech he does not allow you to use google to look up your topic. DON'T TAKE HIM.
Overly tough grader. Exams poorly written. Too much group work. You can spend hours on the homework finding the EXACT answers in the textbook, and he'll still find a way to mark you down. You can lose an entire letter grade on a speech due to ONE aspect out of many that go into presenting a speech. For a 3 unit class this is honestly absurd.
He is definitely unorganized. No study guides for any quizzes or exams. He is a really funny teacher but the amount of groupproject he wants us to put in into our groups is honestly ridiculous. Be aware of community service and lots of hours spent outside of class with your group and even working on papers that are hard to do but shouldn't be -.-
He teaches very well and you will learn the skills to be a more effective communicator. However, consider this professor your last option. He grades unfairly (I speak for myself and my entire class). If he sees you as a strong presenter, he will grade you harshly. However, you quiver and cry during your presentation, he'll grade you lightly. Lol
His assignments and due dates are not clear at all. He has random pop quizzes on the textbook but this is a college level class, not middle school. His tests are all open answer and vague but requires specifics..? He is usually late and has had subs multiple times. He should teach 7th grade at best.
his assignments are super old. he says they "are for you" to improve your interpersonal communication. They are so irrelevant. Find a new career, you clearly do not know how to organize a class off a schedule nor do you want to grade anything. retire or quit 2018
He is a very nice teacher who really cares about his students. He gives really good feedback. He gives 5 point quizzes (warm-up questions) every class. In Comm 301 he assigns about 4 speeches and some with outlines that have very specific guidelines that he wants. Overall he is a great teacher, pretty easy, just do the work and you will be fine.
Really enjoyed this challenging class. Class was graded on 5 speeches based on outlines, group work, conventions, and presentation, as well as 5 takehome exams. Stay on top of deadlines and buy the book and you'll be fine. DON'T be late. Be prepared for group project meetings outside of class + lots of writing. Made me a much better public speaker!
Prof. Severson is a comm guru. His lectures are really thought provoking, and he likes you to come to office hours. He's there for you. Otherwise, lookout. I wrote a total of 76 pages! Extra credit isn't optional if you want an A. Amount of work is INSANE. Your fate is sadly tied to your group. Choose your group wisely. Very tough class for 3 units
Prof Severson is an amazing professor. His class gives a UC or CSU feel but in a community college environment. Which means he challenges you and has incredible feedback if you're willing to put in the time and effort. He is extremely approachable and just an excellent instructor overall!! 10/10 recommend him!!
He is honestly a good teacher and wants the best for his students. He gives lots of work which makes it feel like its a 4 unit class. Test are take home and answers are on books and notes. One chance for extra credit. Group work is mediatory but I loved my group.
Passing The class should solely be based on PUBLIC SPEAKING !!!NOT!!! PAPER WORK!!! college should focus on subject less on whether it would be used in a work field or what ever.
Severson has extremely high expectations of all of his students. He expects amazing writing and speaking and is NOT open to feedback. If you want a A you have to do the two extra credit assignments or else it is impossible. I went to a school dedicated to presentations and public speaking and still did not do great. Seriously would not recommend.
HE SCARED ME AT FIRST! Hard grader, but you get what you give. He makes you want to be in class and its a class worth taking! He creates a Really comfortable environment for a comm class. I was shaking the first presentation but the book and the way he conducts class gave me confidence and I improved my communication skills for sure .
Very bad. This is the type of class you need to stroke the professors ego to get a good grade. He thinks he is really smart and has exhibited toxic masculinity a few of times in class. Expects respect from you, but is the type to not respect you back. Overall, he is not compassionate about your situation and is super entitled. DO NOT TAKE CLASS
