Funny guy.
good sense of humor, and intelligent
Decent lecturer, boring material.
Class doesn't really stay focused.
great subject matter. great professor. funny. you stay involved and interested the whole time. very helpful on essays, willing to meet with you. great lecturer. loved the class
Professor Sharp has a very dry sense of humor
Nice guy. A big frantic with how much it walks around the classroom. Overall he is a good lecturer, very open to different opinions. Nice sense of human, explains the material, but canterbury tales is the worst.
Very good lecturer, fits a lot of info into a one hour time limit, makes seemingly boring material pretty interesting, diverse interests, challenging but rewarding
Possibly the worst teacherI have had in binghamton. His tests in no way related to the course mterial.Someone wh did not read the books could have scored better on the final than a person who had. Do not take crime ficton with him!!
One of the best teachers I have had at Binghamton. Funny, interesting, enthusiastic. He made books I didnt want to read interesting. Take Brit Lit I from him. He's great and fair
Prof. Sharp is, hands down, the best professor I ever had while I attended Binghamton. He made everything he taught interesting to learn and participate in discussions of. He was very clear, fair, and knowledgable. I would recommend him to anyone.
Sharp seems like a cool guy... I enjoyed his class. It's not too hard, but not too easy.
Good class, has great energy that brings the old and tired classics to life.
Coolest guy ever! So funny in that intelligent, goofy sort of way. He's super nice and is pretty laid back. He gets pretty mad when people are talking or when cells go off, but who wouldn't be? It's an interesting class and he makes going worth it.
Not bad---picks pretty good material to teach and has some really good ideas. On occasion, lectures seem to teach the obvious...but he reads very cool Middle English, take a class with him.
Prof. Sharp is a wonderful teacher and tries to get everyone motivated to read, to participate, and to understand the material and symbolism associated to portions of the reading or movies. He's a bit harsh in terms of grading writing, but is still cool!
He talks fast and crams in a TON of material, but give the guy a break, he's only got an hour to cover A LOT. Sharp is amusing, and it's funny when he rubs his head so that his hair is standing up on end. It's quite cute actually. ;) Take him!
Sharp is an awesome teacher. He's brilliant, and so his lectures and the insight he provides for the material is brilliant. Definitely a must-have for Brit Lit I. Everything's organzied and precise, and there's reason for everything.
he's a pretentious ass who nit-picks the english language, and talks way too much, leaving little room for discussion and creativity. not the most ideal learning environment.
Excellent course highly recommend the professor
He is the most motivating professor here. He pushes students students to learn and understand the material, as opposed to lecturing without caring. If you want to take a class to truly learn and become a better writer, take a class with him.
DEFINATLEY HAS INTERESTING THINGS TO SAY BUT SPEAKS AT AN EXTREMELY FAST PACE.
If you don't take a class with him you are really missing out. Brit Lit I with him is great, he's brilliant and entertaining. He makes you want to pay attention and hear what he has to say. He's charming, you can learn a lot from him. ;)
Not finished with the class yet, but after reading everyone's comments on him I just have to add that HE'S VERY HANDSOME/charming/quirky and I can't believe no one ticked "hot" yet! are you all blind?!
I'm so glad I took this class.. I LOVE it, and i definately didn't expect to. He's awesome. You have to take a class with him. The best teacher I've had in BInghamton.
He's so cute, I just wanna pinch him. Man, he's adorable. Like, I can't explain it - some je ne sais quoi about him is just really endearing and stuff like that.
just the cutest thing, prob. not what a prof. wants to hear but by cute i mean funny, engaging and knows his stuff
I LOVE HIM! Professor Sharp is the absolute BEST! I mean who can keep you awake at 1pm after you just had a ton of fries from the mini mall? He has energy and is ABSOLUTELY SMART. I still remember my lines from Sonnet 18. Thanks Sharpy!
A very passionate teacher. He really embraces Brit lit so much that his love for it actually makes the class interesting and fun, even though his teaching style is traditional. It's also great to hear him read Middle English aloud. I know he loves hearing himself too.
Sharp is just darling. He's brilliant, insightful, funny, charming and very easy to approach. He really bridges the gap between student and professor because he isn't too pompious to hang out with his students. The Professor I've had here in 3 years.
This is an amazing man here. He knows exactly what he's talking about and teaches the most engaging lectures I've ever been in. I enjoy the reading, I enjoy the lectures I loved it. He even referenced family guy, so that gives him extra points in my book
I love this man. He made Arthurain Lit seem hilarious. Who even knew that was possible. So adorable, class is not that hard, just a few papers, and a great lecture. Take this class if you can - lowest you can get is an A- or you're an idiot.
Funniest professor in Bing. Loved him. One thing..don't be late for his lectures..he hates it lol. He knows his stuff really well, and manages to force his enthusiasm for a subject onto you. One of the best teachers in the English dept.
Gnarly!!!!
Hes awesome. and funny. and I just wish i could go to his lectures again to hang out with him.
I don't see the goodness everyone else is talking about. Proffessor Sharp is very mean and arrogant. He shoots you down if you have a different opinion. His quizzes are mega hard and way too detailed, even if you read the material. Basically, I hate him. He may be a funny man but it's not funny to insult your students.
Ignore the previous guy--he's probably the one who falls asleep every class. If you pay attention and do the reading, you'll do fine on his quizzes-plus he drops the lowest grades. He's hilarious; he has a very amusing, common-sense way of viewing the literature-not one of the serious, know-it-all pompous guys you see sometimes. Take this class.
For the previous guy, I actually do the reading, stay awake during class and work my butt off to do well and what I said before is true about Prof. Sharp. He's really mean. Maybe you were the one sleeping when he told the entire class of English majors that their papers were sloppy. If we don't basically call him a god, he shoots us down.
Prof. Sharp has a dry wit; he's not mean. There is a difference. He is a great professor and I hope I can be half as good as him when I start teaching. I am just as particular about paper mechanics as he is, so I agreed with his criticisms about the papers. He truly does not have a god complex; he just knows his material.
just because he sometimes gives bad grades does not mean he is a bad teacher or that he has a god complex. perhaps he is right in assessing us so harshly...just because we're a room full of english majors does not mean we are either smart, talented, or knowledgable. HE is the teacher, and WE are the students. end of story.
If you aren't a complete moron, you'll do well in Sharp's class. If you have thin skin, which most English majors do when it comes to their crappy writing, then look for one of the many professors that will hold your hand and walk you through a whole semester, and take their class instead. It's that easy.
I have taken Prof. Sharp two times, and he was the reason I took a crime fiction course. I don't know what he did to piss of some people in his Aurthurian Lit class but I have nothing but the utmost respect for the man. His insights are both wonderfully complex, and draw out every bit from the rich text, but also sensible and well thought. GREAT!
I plan on asking this man to father my children later on in life. He is amazing, in every sense of the word. He is uber-intelligent, extremely engaging, quirky and witty... I even got a little squeamish in a good way when he read parts of The Aeneid in Latin. HOT. In all seriousness, I encourage everyone to take any class with Professor Sharp.
Most of the bad reviews here are based on the recent midterm he gave us. However, for people who did the reading well, payed attention in class, and studied, it wasnt really that hard. He is a fantastic teacher. Knows the topic so well, just overflowing with knowledge. The texts arent easy and you will have to read a fair bit but still, great teach
very intelligent man who definitely knows his stuff. very entertaining in discussions...can always lighten the mood by saying something amusing (sometimes without even meaning to). downside: very group-work oriented, which is reminiscent of middle school...somewhat condescending.
One of the better professors that I've had. The guys knows everything about Brit Lit and he LOVES what he does. It definitely shows in how engaging, entertaining and informative his lectures are. I definitely recommend taking classes w/ him.
Lazy, often unprepared for class, likely to make harsh comments with little provocation, unlikely to teach you much, generally seems embittered and takes it out on you. Avoid like plague. Renaissance Verse should have been interesting. With him it was not.
I took his "Comics" class and it was always interesting, if only because his mannerisms are so quirky. All in all though, he is very passionate about his subject matter, although he can be a bit of a tough grader.
Best professor I've had here. I just took my second class with him. His passion is obvious. He's funny, friendly, interesting, and genuinely cares about what students have to say. That said, he's not going to give out easy A's, but will never make anything too hard for you. Do the reading and you'll be fine. His lectures are often purely enjoyable.
Awesome xD Very funny - so this makes it easier to stay awake in class. Clear about what he wants and responds to questions you may have. A bit of a tough grader =T
This guy is the worst professor of all I have ever had in college. He is lazy, worthless, and never hands papers or anything back on time. He should not be teaching at a school like BU! Avoid him...
Professor Sharp is far and away the best professor I've had at BU. Not only is he extremly intelligent, but his brilliant lectures are a delight to attend - his good looks are trumped only by his excellent sense of humor. I will say this: if you're dumb and/or lazy, don't take his class.. it will be over your head.
One of the smartest teachers i had at Binghamton. Tries not to lecture much even though hes better then most at it. Props to him for working with inmates.
He's one of the most uninspiring professors I've had. The class does not push you to do anything, and that can make you lazy. He did not put enough effort into teaching. There are many better professors in the English department.
Someone else commented on how he should not be at a school like BU but as a senior I am nothing but dissatisfied with the Binghamton faculty and administration. Professor Sharp should be at a better school. Also he is Rex Parker a well renowned NYT crossword puzzle blogger. Do you know how smart you have to be to do that?
Pretty easy class, but you do sort of have to read the graphic novels. However, it's a treat to read any of the graphic novels in the class. Amazing class to be revealed to that literature. Watchmen, Fun Home, We3, Dark Knight Returns, etc.
Professor Sharp is a really good teacher, if you're a certain type of student. If you are willing to accept criticism, work hard (really work hard, not just say you do), and actively participate, you will do well. If you slack of in any way, chances are you're not going to do well. Of course, that's what college is. QUit complaining and study. Geez
great guy. i would take another class with him any day. very passionate about english. makes you understand what you're reading and if you listen closely, it makes sense. made me want to become an english major. overall, very satisfied with his class
Lukewarm. At first I really liked him. Smart, funny, definitely passionate. But he sometimes goes into waaaay (way) too much detail and spends too long on some poems. No doubt that he is knowledgable, but he can be VERY repetitive.
he was a really good teacher, just a little bit awkward. i thought he was funny though. i just don't understand why we spent an entire semester reading dante's inferno and the aeneid in british literature....
Sharp is awesome. I'll take any class he teaches. He cares about the material, cares that you aren't full of it and can make an hour and a half fly by.
He was funny and engaging in class discussions and he knew tons of information and background for Brit Lit. However, he couldn't explain to me where I lost points on my first paper and I got the same poor grade on my next paper even after he helped my revise it. He's way to harsh of a grader.
By far the most engaging professor I have had at this school. You need to work hard in order to do well, but he'll motivate you to do so. Well worth it.
Amazing, engaging professor, but definitely a lot of the grade is dependent on your TA, which sucks. He's funny, witty, smart, and engaging which is sooo necessary for the subject.
Very rude. Grades WAY too tough in order to give credibility to his useless and unnecessary classes. Very unclear in what is expected in written assignments. Even for someone who has done well all throughout college and does all the work for his classes, success is completely contingent on his mood at the time of grading.
Sharp is by far the best professor I've had at Binghamton. He's funny, smart, and he makes class enjoyable, even when we're talking about 17th century lit. His comics class is a must. As long as you read, you'll do fine. His tests are based on quotes and all you have to do is cite the source and then analyze it. Easy if you do the assigned work.
Great professor. Even though I didn't like British Lit, he made it interesting to the point where I didn't mind going to class at 8:30. Just make sure you put in a lot of effort on papers because he's a tough grader.
Loved his Comics class! Definitely a must-take: I already had a high interest level in comics and such, but he really opened up my interests even more. A common word of warning though is that he is an EXTREMELY tough grader on papers and tests, so don't go into the class thinking that it be a piece of cake! Very critical, but great class!
Great professor; Sharp is funny and passionate, but a tough grader on essays. Tests are decently easy if you study; a lot is memorization. Brit Lit is not worth the 8:30 though.
At first, I looked forward to his class. After I got my first paper back, I lost all interest. He is way too harsh of a grader. It is almost impossible to get an A on a paper. Then, the topic at hand didn't seem to develop much at all. It was just the same 5 ideas being discussed the entire semester. Ruined my GPA. STAY AWAY
He's a very harsh grader and he's intimidating in class. However, if you do participate, he will actively listen and respond like a normal human being. He loves groups and never really analyzes anything too much. His tests are all memorization, which makes no sense to me in an English class. Don't expect an A...or a B.
Hated this man. He likes what he teaches and class can be interesting, but his lectures never end and his grading is very harsh. Don't take any of his classes and expect an A.
Prof Sharp is very condescending the first class, especially when he talks about his grading. He is a very harsh grader, especially on essays, but his tests aren't too bad as long as you study. Participation can also help you bring your grade up. I found class to be very interesting, and worthwhile despite the harsh grading.
Professor Sharp is a very intelligent man with a huge passion for his classes. His classes are not easy A's but he is a great professor. This class was a substitution for Brit Lit 2, and I think it probably is easier than Brit Lit 2. 3 papers, no tests. Almost daily group discussions- great chance to know classmates and can be helpful for books
I loved this professor so much, I jumped at opportunity to take a second class by him. His British Literate course is a bit of a lot to take o, but his passion and exploration of the material make it a worth while class. If you love literature, you will love Professor Sharp.
Sharp is a very interesting character. He is clever and really enthusiastic about his Comics course. I recommend him if you have an interest in graphic novels and know how to analyze texts & images fairly well!
I thought this was going to be an amazing class and on the first day, I was excited to get started. Each day in class was very interesting but when it came time to our first paper, I was completely lost with all words so I went in for help. He would only read the introduction paragraph and sent me away, only telling me to get out of high school.
As a career English major, trust me, STAY AWAY from this guy. He's very nice and his classes are interesting, but if you expect to be able to get an "A" in his class, its not happening.
Probably the hardest teacher I have had in my four years at bing. His grading is blatantly unfair, gives you assignments that sound easy and creative and then rips your writing to shreds. He seems like a nice guy but I 100% regret taking his course.
One of two of the most inspiring professors at Binghamton. A rare gem. Easily the most challenging, gratifying two classes I have ever taken. Sharp taught me to take chances with my writing and to stand firmly behind my ideas. If you aren't afraid of reading and working hard, I could not recommend this class more.
Best English class iv taken here. Crime fiction was really interesting. Professor Sharp is a very fair grader and is a really fun person. Great readings and class discussions. Do the readings and you will pass no problem.
Fun teacher, though tough on grades.
This class has a lot to offer, if you're willing to put in energy. Sharp really care about attendance but more importantly participation. His essays are hard but he's a fair grader, and encourages people to come to his office hours. If you pay attention in class and read the books, you'll not only be fine, but read great books and learn a lot.
Professor Sharp is a great guy, but is a hard grader. There weren't many assignments. 3 papers total and 2 in class tests, but if you missed a class, you missed a lot. . I'm not an English major, but he actually recognized me and thought I have great things to say so I give him credit for boosting my self-esteem. GREAT GUY, HARD GRADER, WORTH IT!
I've never met a guy who likes the sound of his own voice so much. Talks for the entire hour and a half class and ignores students who raise their hands and want to contribute to the discussion. Ridiculously tough grader, very aloof and arrogant in office hours. Not very helpful. Felt like an uphill battle in his class all semester.
I had Sharp for Brit Lit and Comics. For both classes, as long as you did the work and came to class and came prepared, he was always fair. If you don't come in or don't do the work then ask for extensions or anything like that, it's not gonna happen. He's a cool guy as long as you're a good student. Side note: he's hilarious, dry sarcastic humor.
Expects so much from students and grades so harshly. Talks a LOT. Not good at responding to emails and takes FOREVER to return your grades.
Sharp is one of the worst professors I've taken a class with. His tests are completely based on memorization, grades have nothing to do with actual learning. He goes on tangents that do not pertain to the text, and he likes to listen to himself speak rather than ask the class what they need help with. He does the minimum amount of work he can.
fairly easy class. lots of readings and movies, but honestly you can just read the wikipedia page. the index cards are what you have to be good at.
Sharp loves to talk and often went off topic on tangents, but made never went over time with lectures. Only homework given was reading and no tests. Considering the subject matter, he makes the class tolerable.
Probably one of my favorite professors here at BU. He is such an every day guy and has a sarcastic sense of humor that as long as you aren't sensitive, you will find him awesome! The class was very interesting because you respected him because he trusts you to do the work. Since there was no homework or tests, and I recommend him to anyone at BU.
Basically lectures for 1.5 hr straight without getting any input from students. He was interesting for the most part. Do well on the index cards and do your reading, and you'll be fine
I wasn't a fan of the way he lectured us all class, but he is an incredibly smart man and he clearly loves what he does. If you ask a question he will give a full explanation. Just do the reading and show up for the index cards. The final project makes up for the line recognition you may miss on the tests. But you must put in the work to get the A.
Best professor I have ever had. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about crime fiction. The books you will read are AMAZING! He's a wonderful lecturer and his exams are super easy as long as you read throughout the semester.
Comics: Really nice guy, very willing to cancel class. Lectures were interesting and engaging. As he'll probably say in the first class, "If you can't get in to reading comic books, then I don't know what to tell you." Papers and exams weren't easy, but they are easy to study for.
The class procedure was fair. The readings were spread out and the grading criteria for the semester was understood from the beginning. As for the class itself, the professor made it unbearable. Interrupts students, doesn't let them speak, thinks his opinion is the only correct one. Worst thing: He grades papers on aspects he had said he wouldn't.
He's a cool guy and likes to joke around, but the way the class was set up made it difficult to do really well. We were only graded on 4 assignments the whole semester, two of these being very difficult exams.
This class worried me the most because he treats the upper-level aspect of it very seriously. LOTS of reading, two tests worth 25% each, two papers and a journal. Very picky about writing and the tests require a lot of memorization from books/poems and the history book. Entertaining lecturer, intense class culture. Surprised I passed.
I had high hopes coming into this class because I had heard good things about Sharp, but honestly don't waste your time. Sharp is a tough grader to the point of unfairness, he told us not to be too specific on a test but then i got points off for not beings specific enough. He also likes to rant and go on tangents.
Do NOT take a class with this guy. SOooo arrogant, loves to hear himself talk, doesn't seem to see his students because he is blinded by his own ego. Had to switch out of his class 2 weeks in because the vibes were so awful and I didn't think I'd be able to bear the class for a whole semester.
The biggest problem with Michael Sharp is that his 2 exams (one for each half of the semester) are fill in the blank/multiple choice based on trivia facts from the book, such as 'What business did Charles Moulton's lover's aunt own'. He also never answers his emails and will randomly cancel class, sometimes after you've waited 15 minutes.
Sharp is a nice guy and likes to try to make older material more palatable. He talks a lot, which is probably his biggest flaw. He'll say he's going to frame to class toward discussion and then go on half-hour tangents, and he really likes his own voice and sense of humor. He is very idiosyncratic with the way he structures the course.
Professor Sharp is not everyone's cup of tea, but I didn't find him too bad. Clear grading criteria and expectations. Tests aren't hard if you study a couple days in advance and take notes.
Professor Sharp loves to talk and talk! For most time, students are seated to hear what he says (he just can't stop spitting out words, actually) and even some students want to say something, he won't allow them to speak up. He does respect students, though. Comic books which were used as textbooks were fine works, but you'd better read them alone.
I probably wouldn't like Sharp as much if I wasn't so interested in the material. He wanted us to know a lot of detail about the comics for the test. At one point, he told us he threw in really hard questions for fun just to see who would get them right. That was really annoying to hear for obvious reasons. Good lectures, just study a lot.
Sharp is incredibly smart. He's definitely snarky at times, but only if you deserve it and it's never mean. So funny and he deviates from the subject matter at times, drawing connections to extremely interesting things. The class isn't the easiest, but as long as you read thoroughly you'll be fine. A really great professor, highly recommended.
The class is graded on two 2-3 page papers and two tests. The papers have very vague prompts, but Sharp is only looking for specific papers as answers to the prompts. The tests asks HYPER specific questions on hundreds of pages of content. Most questions are random trivia that is almost exclusively not mentioned in class. Take this in the Spring!
For a classic which has a 33% participation grade, this guy sure does talk a lot. Promises ample time for student input in class, then goes off on tangents long tangents about the piece of literature that usually have little depth. Never took an ENG course with so little analysis; a MT/Final being completely memorization based is a joke.
If ur looking to take a class tht makes you understand & appreciate British literature, dont take Brit Lit I with this guy. 2 tests tht are 33% of grade require u to remember crazy tiny details from various dense books. For part 1 of final he provided just 4 lines from 31 poems & 4 books we had to name the title/author of. Grades 2 papers harshly.
He says participation matters all the time. I didn't read every book and still got by on sparknotes. He's a cool guy, lectures are interesting. But when he grades papers he's just rude & gives no good feedback. He literally wrote on my short story "I have no idea what is going on." which is crazy, because another prof read it & said it was awesome
Michael Sharp is a really funny person, and he makes British Literature a more accessible subject for people who wouldn't otherwise like it much. The structure of the class, while unconventional, made keeping up with reading enjoyable and interesting. Tests are hard but people overhype them. I thought he was a pretty great teacher honestly.
very boring and dry lectures, tends to ramble on. tests are on the readings and lectures and are very hard.
I have never met a more inaccessible professor. He doesn't respond to emails or answer questions about the class or course work. All assignments are unclear and ambigous as to what he is looking for in your responses. I would really really strongly recccomend not taking any classes with this guy if you care even the slightest bit about your grades.
If you're looking for a very traditional English class, I wouldn't say this is it. You do read a lot of traditional works (Dante's Inferno, Virgil's Aeneid, Milton's Paradise Lost, etc.) but the paper prompts are unusual. It's a lot more creative writing and thinking, so if you're not okay with that, don't take this class.
Dude is a narc don't get me wrong but his class is manageable and creative. I really enjoyed it. He did make changes to the structure of the class though, we had 2 papers and a final. I liked the prompts a lot made it easier to focus when writing. I didn't need him outside of class but maybe you will so beware because he's hard to contact.
I had professor Sharp when classes were online. He was very knowledgeable, however, he can get off track pretty easily and had a hard time getting through all of the material that we needed to cover each week. Overall, the class itself wasn't bad. We had two papers throughout the semester as well as discussion posts and then a final exam- 3 essays.
Professor Sharp is very entertaining within his lectures and he makes hard content easily understandable. There is an obvious love for what he is teaching. The class itself is hard, your entire grade is based off of two essays and the reading is pretty challenging. However, the content is really interesting (especially if you like history).
I truly enjoyed taking British Lit with him. You only have two papers that allow you to be creative while still incorporating your knowledge from the readings. The final exam was fair. Most all of the readings were interesting but sometimes the epics were difficult to understand. Hes super funny and I would definitely recommend him!
Professor Sharp was brilliantly blunt when discussing what he labeled as "a bunch of dead white guys." Highlights the value of Early European Lit without putting the viewpoints and authors on a pedestal. I laughed at every lecture at the hilarious jokes and sarcastic wit Sharp brought to the table. The paper topics were great too.
Sharp was a bit of a mixed professor but I overall really enjoyed him. He isn't great about responding to emails or clear grading/assignment criteria, but as long as you read the comics, show up to most of the lectures, and try on the few assignments you should be fine. Make sure to participate, and try to find readings for free, the prices add up!
You have to take this class for the English major. I think hes the only prof who teaches this but I really loved him, his essay prompts were more creative and made learning really boring works more fun.
There are 4 assignments in the class; 2 tests and 2 papers. The paper prompts are fun, and I enjoyed writing them. the tests are another whole category. 50% of the test grade is identifying quotes from the readings. this is extremely difficult, especially in the second half of the course, which focuses on 25 short poems. be prepared to study a lot.
He's obviously super educated on the topic he teaches. Other than that, I despise this class. You are only graded on 4 things, so if you flunk one it could impact your grade heavily. His lecture style is hard to follow as he goes on tangents all of the time. The amount of reading is almost unbearable. He is not an understanding professor at all.
Lectures are interesting and helpful for tests and papers. Tests were specific. Good prompts for essays and as long as you answered the prompt fully you got a good grade. Him and the TAs were hard to get a reach of. He was a bit condescending when questions were asked and often ignored people when their hands were raised.
Although Professor Sharp knows what hes talking about, his class is completely unorganized and structured in a really unfair manner. You are only graded on 4 things, 2 papers and 2 exams. The exams are extremely hard you have to identify quotes with no clues from one of the many random readings given. Its almost impossible to do well good luck ;)
Professor Sharp expects his students to know all of the material that he has been studying for the past decade or so. His tests are way too specific, and he focuses on memorization more than analysis or intake. Since there are only 4 things that we are graded on, if you mess up once, your grade is pretty much down the drain.
His lectures were intellectual, chaotic, but often hilarious. He's not for everyone(esp. if you're sensitive), but people give him a bad rep because they expect to get good grades without effort. DO. THE. READING. It will pay off on 2 tests. Both papers allow for creativity which is great, easy W credit. Left this class feeling smarter for sure.
Definitely a nice Professor but extremely disorganized and will spend the entire class rambling about things that may be unrelated. Tests relied on being to identify what book and author an obscure quote would be from, and youd need to know the significance of it which was hard because it would just be a random quote. Nice guy but too chaotic
worst class I have ever taken.
If you didn't understand the material, you are pretty much screwed. If you had a question, he would just ignore you. The TAs for this class were hard to reach, If you emailed any of them, they'll never respond nor help you. Went once asking for help, and they completely fooled me. Two essays as well as two final exams, think again before taking.
There's a lot of reading and if you fall behind it is hard to catch back up. Lecture isn't mandatory but is helpful. We read The Aeneid, Inferno and some others if you want to read ahead. You cannot just use spark notes you have to read, take notes and pay attention to important characters. Very few grading opportunities so do your best.
Professor Sharp was a good professor. I never went to lectures or read the books and still finished with an A but I still had to put a lot of time into studying lecture notes from people who went to do well. The class is graded on 2 papers worth 25% each (easy 100s) and 2 exams(very hard) worth 25% each. The final wasn't cumulative.
Professor Sharp is the best. His lectures are very fun for relatively boring material. I cannot stress this enough, KEEP UP WITH THE READINGS! As long as you read a little every day the reading is not overwhelming I promise. I read at most 20-25 pages a day because I read everyday. I really enjoyed his class, tests are easy if you actually read!
There is a lot you need to know for tests. Lectures are early, but show up, and you need to study for the tests. The grades are based on two 2-3 page papers, a midterm and a final (not cumulative). Depending on the TA you are assigned, you will do well on the class, especially on your papers.
Professor Sharp is a fantastic instructor who is clearly passionate about the subject he teaches. However, his grading system is incredibly difficult, which, as many others have said, makes it very hard to do well in his class. ENG327 is not a class I recommend taking early, and should probably be in the 400-level. Otherwise, it is a good course.
The only reason I rate the difficulty as high as I do is a clear lack of structure. The lectures were genuinely interesting and engaging, but when it comes down to the two essays and two tests the course is graded on, they're short and easy- with absolutely no direction as to where to begin studying the material.
If you're looking for a professor who cares a lot about the topic and is engaging, Professor Sharp is the guy. There are only 4 things you're graded on, but the 2 essays are short and not too bad. For the tests, just do the assigned reading when it is on the syllabus and definitely really study hard. Other than that, it is a great class!
i really enjoyed my experience with professor sharp. you can tell that he is actually passionate about what he teaches. for me he found a way to make lectures interesting and the course content engaging. the guidelines for his papers are pretty vague but that being said he didn't seem like an incredibly harsh grader to me. definitely recommend!
Professor Sharp is funny and interesting, but not necessarily a great professor. His lectures are frustratingly meandering and only cover superficial details about the works read. There are only four assignments for the entire course, and they're not too difficult, but their grading depends on the flexibility of the TA.
Professor Sharp is very funny and engaging however his tests are difficult to study for as the content and criteria aren't made super clear. The papers (only 2 pages) were my favorite part of this class, because you were given multiple prompts to choose from and could be as creative as you like.
If you love studying English you will love Professor Sharp. His lectures are informal and engaging, and he always gets to the heart of the subject matter, almost without you even noticing. When you ask questions or make observations, he genuinely interacts with your thoughts. He made me look forward to an 8:30 AM lecture class, every week.
if you don't go to lecture you won't do well on the exams, there's only 2 exams and 2 papers you get graded on. he never answers his emails and he can be rude if you ask certain questions, he's not flexible and isn't exactly reliable when it comes to posting things. Class isn't very engaging, he talks and takes forever to see a hand being raised
Knowledgeable but horribly checked out/ inaccessible/ uncaring: zero effort to connect with students, insanely flaky (about emails/ posting essay prompts/ study guides/ showing up to class) and often is rude/ standoffish for no reason. He monologues for 90 minutes, no notes or slides. Tests/ grading system are unreasonable (4 grades, 25% each).
The course is a lot of reading and has an atrocious grading policy that makes it very difficult to get an A in the class. There are only four grades, two essays and two tests, with the tests covering hundreds of pages of reading.
Lots of reading but if you pay attention and participate in class it isn't actually that difficult. He essentially explains each reading in each lecture. Test are difficult but not impossible.
Professor Sharp, while knowledgeable in his field, falls short as an educator. His notes are sloppy if you could even call them notes, and he rambles on about unimportant concepts that won't be relevant to the 4 assignments you complete in the class, each worth 25% of your grade. Good luck succeeding on the exams; they're downright impossible.
FAVORITE PROFESSOR. I loved this class. So much. Quite a bit of reading, but it all ties together so well that I did not mind at all! Professor Sharp is also HILARIOUS and the only way I was ever going to wake up at 8am would be for laughs, so that was great! He's accessible outside of class, and the biggest help is to pay attention in class!! :)
All I have to say is: pay attention in this class. THAT is how you'll succeed. He explains things very well as long as you're following him and not zoning out or stuck in your own head. This is not a class to coast through, but it is a class that builds a super strong basis of literary knowledge. I recommend this to the moon and back.
Professor Sharp brings a lot of passion for the subject, though his teaching style can be hit or miss. The workload is manageable, with just a few essays and exams. For study prep, I found unstuck AI and the free textbook helpful. Overall, a good class if you're willing to put in the work.
I would say this is the worst class i've taken for English requirement. If you're not a great test taker, choose the alternative class for this credit (yes it exists). Professor rambles and has zero empathy for anyone. Additionally, a serious ego problem. He really enjoys having more knowledge than his students. avoid class at all costs.
Rambles about unrelated topics, and keeping up with his lectures is impossible. TA's are only communication. Will say you need to learn certain details only to test on material never taught. There's no class material to refer to if you're sick or miss class. Doing well in his class, let alone passing, is unfairly difficult. Would never take again.
Never skipped a class and paid attention yet the exams were unnecessarily hard. The professor has no empathy for students and was blatantly rude. He rambles on during class and provides a study guide where about one thing is actually on the exam.
There are two papers and two exams. The exams are ridiculous and he makes you memorize so much content that isn't even on them. There was no reason to even go to class because he just rambled nonsense. I learned nothing. Avoid this class at all costs.
Absolutely adored this class and professor. Such a good time, actually enjoyed writing my essays and getting reception from him on them. Grew as a cinephile and as a moviegoer. Loved my classmates and my time in the course. Would heavily recommend if you need a W credit!
The lectures are pretty fun to listen to, but he mostly just rambles about stuff kind of adjacent to the content, barely anything he said was on the exams. I found it really difficult to get all the reading done on time with the syllabus, but I'm also kind of a slow reader so idk. Definitely don't take the class unless it's required for your major
Professor Sharp is a kind guy but the format of his class is terrible. I'm an English major so I had to take the class but if you could avoid taking his class I would. The reading was fairly light and there only four assignments in total. While the two papers weren't too bad the two exams were close to IMPOSSIBLE!
I loved this class. A lot. Lots of people say the tests are hard, my opinion is that if you ACTUALLY go to every class, write down what he repeats and puts on the board, and pay attention to his description of the exam structure, you will be fine. You need to do the reading, and this class isn't one you can coast in, but I learned a LOT from Sharp.
Honestly not that bad, but his lectures are almost completely useless. Just make sure you follow the syllabus and pay attention for what's on the tests and you'll do fine. Some stuff he made us read didn't show up on exams, but they were never super long readings so it's not a big deal, just make sure you know what you're reading.
make sure you read the books (i pirated all of them, don't waste your money on that textbook) and go to class, but feel free to do other homework during lecture because about 70% of the stuff he talks about is pretty much useless, he spent a lot of time answering dumb questions.
Funny guy but get ready to read on a schedule that doesn't take into account ur other classes, papers are crazy easy the exams are where it gets hard. I did have him at 8 am which probs played a part in my opinion on the class, but just be prepared.
Professor Sharp is very passionate about British literature and him as a professor is great. However, I would not recommend his classes. For the final , there are 21 poems to memorize along with their titles in addition to other readings. The tests are very difficult, especially bc of the blind identifications but papers are very easy.
