Dr Shea was a hard teacher but just like he promised when you reach the final...you are extremely prepared. He completely gives back what you are willing to put in!
Decent teacher, not the best, not the worst. Nice ENOUGH, not overly friendly. Didn't reply to my emails. Makes lecture interesting. Seems like a cocky guy who thinks he's the man. Does offer extra credit HW assignments which is a MAJOR help for such a difficult class like A & P. Though I don't think he rly cares abt his students.
Thankfully I only have him for lab. He tests hard, which is fine. It's his attitude that is terrible. He doesn't seem to care about his students, seems annoyed by questions asked, and is extremely arrogant. He doesn't explain the labs throughly, so it requires a lot of research and outside work to understand what to do. Avoid him as a professor!
if you don't want to put in the work, then yes take someoen else. but if you want to succeed, then dr shea is the way to go. Show him you want to succeed and he will do anything to help you. His recommendation letters are the reason why I got into schools I never thought I could. Like i said, if you want to go places, take his class.
Dr. Shea is a great professor. He promises at the start of the semester you will learn a lot for your "tool box". I was not let down. If you want to skate by get another professor. Tests are hard but if you pay attention you will be prepared. In lab he expects you to put in the work to learn. This is college you should be able to figure it out.
Thank you Dr. Shea!!!. The best professor I've had at HVCC by far. Lots of extra credit (do them it helps). He explains things so you can understand. He is a little cocky but it works for him. He is very helpful go to office hours better with one on one. Labs are tough too lots to learn study study study. A&P is all about studying you have NO life
Dr. Shea is great, you have to understand him though other wise you will take him wrong. He is here for you to succeed, and you NEED to show him that. He does not care if you skip class. Dont try to BS him though because he is always a step ahead. Wish I could take him again.
screwed up quite a lot - gave us lab objectives riddled with spelling errors, told us to study only what was on them, then added at least 5 things on the practical that were not listed - he wasn't even aware he did it until told. both my exam scantrons have q's marked wrong that are correct. don't ever assume he is right or on top of things.
Wish I took a different professor. He is in fact cocky, arrogant, and dry. Upon arriving to lab, he never explains what to do- just hands you a packet. You have to figure out where to go from there for three slow lab hours. He's not good at answering questions. I would have succeeded if tests had review or study packets, but they were nonexistent
I studied my bum off for our THREE final exams, all on the same day, and was horrified to find questions on topics i am pretty sure he said were not going to be asked about much. yet did not ask about half the stuff we were def told to know. very stressful. 2 people, myself included, were not aware he was giving our second exam on the day he did.
I was in the same class, and it was not anything I wouldn't have expected for a 12 week, once a week class. There weren't three finals lol. Great teacher, hard class, wouldn't be any different with anyone else. This material is just memorization and it is what it is. Its not high school anymore and Dr Shea definitely doesn't approach it like HS
Absolutely horrible. Annoyed with questions, condescending, not interested, does not care about his students, very unprepared for class, talked too fast, gave 3 exams in one day.
would like to reiterate that it is NOT the course or material, he is just not great at teaching. the course could have been a lot BETTER if he were;not a bad course. and it is already very different, in a good way, with Dr. Fronhofer in APII - he's much more engaged and interested just on the first day, should be a great class. take it with him.
Great professor, if you care to learn and thats the point of taking a class from him. he has had such a positive impact on my education and i wish i could take more with him. he is not easy by any means, he is what a professor really should be. he forces you to do the work for yourself and it has really paid off for me
He's my favorite teacher at HVCC. Extremely knowledgeable, reasonable, organized, helpful, etc. I absolutely love his classes and leave class having retained a lot of information. Take him if you get the chance. I wish I could take more of his classes. You will learn what he teaches.
I had him for Chemistry Lab for the most part he is decent teacher I had no complaints, but when you ask him a question its like he makes you feel like you're stupid.
Made chemistry easier than it was in highschool. Basically hands out points on tests with extra credit homework, which is the only homework. Knows exactly what he is talking about and answers questions to the best of his ability.
Hardest teacher ever. Don't take chemistry with him or stevens they are both difficult. Lots of work and hard exam problems
Every negative comment on this feed is true! If I had looked this site up before being 4 weeks in I wouldn't have taken it!I don't believe that anyone would give him a good review. It is just sad that you're wasting peoples time and taking their money for terrible teaching like this!
Great Professor. Gives students every chance to do well. Exams are nearly word for word from the notes. Pay attention in class and study your notes and it is really not possible to do bad. Easy A or B. Seems harsh and blunt, but if you actually have a conversation with him you will know he is really a nice person and cares.
Had Shea twice, failed the first time because I didn't put in the time even though he gave me every chance to do well- then I wrote a sub par rating here that I regret. Second time I got an A. He will let you do well or bad, leaves it up to you. He is great. I wish he did more then Gen chem and micro
Inspired me to learn science and to succeed even when I thought it was not possible.
If you are lazy and want to just show up and get an A, this is not the class for you. However, if you understand that you get what you you put into it, then you'll love Dr. Shea's class. He gives you every opportunity to succeed, you just have to be willing to learn and work for it. Ignore every bad review - I learned so much more than expected.
Dr. Shea is a cool guy. He really tries to work around what's best for students and is okay with going slow if necessary. At the end of the day though he will not babysit you and it is up to you to make sure that you study, do your work, and try to succeed. More than willing to help if you need it. I like him!
I did not have a problem with his lectures at all. However, I notice for tests that he grades short answers heavily . He is helpful if you ask for help. I must admit that sometimes you can get a little lost with some of the chapters covered in the textbook. I like his pace though he takes his time to explain the subject chapter by chapter.
you couldn't pay me to take this class again.
I would never recommend him as a microbiology teacher.
Great professor probably the best that I have had at HVCC and I am graduating this month.
Have him for lab - He's very condescending when you ask questions and makes you feel stupid before giving nondescript answers. Shea sits at his desk texting / using his laptop instead of walking around helping. He doesn't seem to want to be there so I'm not sure why he chose this as a job. Advice: take a class with Dr. N instead, she actually cares
Had Doc Shea for all chemistry courses. Just know what is expected and you're fine. Read all labs prior because there are quizzes. Let's you work at your own pace in lab and won't look over your shoulder until you ask him to. He trusts that if you don't ask how to do it, then you know what you are doing. Gives you freedom in lab - I appreciate that
Took Shea for summer micro. Exams were difficult, but he did have a T/F question section on each test. Lab is very laid back & quizzes are open book. Mastering Micro is mandatory and counts as an exam grade. Also gave several extra credit mc homework assignments. I'd def take him again. Very caring professor with a good sense of humor... & he's hot
Shea is a good professor/lecturer. For MB I recorded every one of his lectures, I recommend this. There wasnt a single question on the test he didnt talk about. Fair tests, but class did poorly bc the material requires a lot of study time outside class. Put the time in, use online MasteringMB to study and listen to his lectures, you can get an A.
I'm not quite sure if I like Dr. Shea or not.. In some cases I didn't like him- for example if I asked a question for clarification he almost made a remark like it was rhetorical & I should've known. His tests require a lot of studying, if you don't study you won't pass. I had him for Micro so give or take there's a lot to know but, overall he's OK
So grateful that I took this course with dr Shea. He forces the student to do the work. If you expect him to give you the answers then you aren't learning so really what's the point. Any serious student should take a class with dr shea.
So many real life examples that makes class easier. People say he's mean but he isn't. He's just blunt. If you don't like honesty then take someone else. I have done well in other classes because of the way that Shea had conditioned me learn. "Don't just memorize thats not learning - be able to use and apply information."
Shea is a great professor in that he's very specific on what will be on the tests. He also explains things clearly and lets you make an 8.5 by 11 inch cheat sheet for each test! But as a person, he's kinda scary. If you ask questions he'll usually treat you condescendingly, and he refuses to help with labs. Be prepared to work on your own.
It seems like he doesn't care about teaching well or helping the students, and he explains concepts like we already know them. If you skip lecture you're screwed unless you read the textbook front to back. If you do ask a question he usually is very condescending or will say "it's in the book". He does allow an 8.5x11 cheat sheet though for tests.
I found Dr. Shea's teaching style to be disappointing. He showed up 10 to class daily. His power points fit well with what he was discussing, although he jumped around a bit with information. He was enthusiastic during lecture and then in lab he seemed very uninterested. His tests had much more material than what was discussed in lecture.
He is on campus all the time and is always available to help. Sometimes he is a couple minutes late for class because he spends a lot of time in the study room helping students. I got my first college A from doc shea and I am so grateful that I got stuck in his class. I tried taking online but that didn't work.
I really liked this class. Great lectures - he invites questions in class and stays late to make himself available. His grading system is awesome. Study the slides and record his lectures to study from. He absolutely talks about everything he tests on. If you put in some effort and care about understanding the material, you will do fine. Very fair
Listen, if you are able to learn on your own by just listening and relying heavily on a textbook you hardly use in class. Then this class is for you. But on the other hand if you need things explained well, with lots of example of how to do each step and someone who is very interactive with his students, you should pick a different professor.
Very clear and always fair. Will let you hand in labs late or even take a test early or late. He makes sure you know the material though but it is a pretty easy class and the book is really simple. He tells you EXACTLY what you need to know for the multiple choice only tests.
Took this class last year with someone else and it was awful. Took it again with dr shea and I couldn't be happier and I got an A. He's pretty blunt but in a good honest fair way. If u put in the effort he will always err on your side.
Dr. Shea is a nice guy, but he is difficult to get any feedback from. He isn't very approachable at all and it seemed like he wasn't willing to help. Lectures are boring and very short. Always ended class early. Labs were easy. Go to class, pay attention and you should be fine, but this class was pretty boring. Very easy though.
Great guy! Laid back approach to teaching which is nice. Definitely will help if you ask but he won't nag or step on your toes. Perfect in lab, tells you what's going on, shows you how to set stuff up, and turns you loose and doesn't watch over your shoulder. More should be like Shea!
Pretty chill guy. Very laid back teaching style, but at the same time informative. Lets you use a cheat sheet on the tests, which honestly doesn't always help. Gives Mastering Chemistry homework to be completed by the end of each week. Gives about five unit tests.
Best I've had. He tells you everything you need.
Took chem 100 and was disappointed because the person teaching is not very good and doesn't know much chemistry. Took chem 110 and learned a ton highly recommended.
One of the better ones at hvcc. Gives you space and doesnt micromanage your time and he will let you make mistakes so to learn from them. You will learn chem and build fundamental skills at the same time. Recommended.
Good class great professor highly recommended. Many office hours and is in the study room all the time. Will answer any question as long as he sees you have tried first.
Best class and I actually enjoyed coming. Teaches you to think not just memorize. Def take again if possible. Review sheets and notes is all you need for an A
Shea for Medical Micro over the Summer. Very lecture-heavy & REALLY difficult & long Exams! Wish we actually learned more about MEDICINE within Microbiology. He is very uninterested in lab, meaning he just sits on his computer, and if you ask him for help he kinda will act like you're dumb, answering with rhetorical questions. Study or you'll fail.
Shea is an amazing professor. Ive been fortunate to have him for Gen Chem and Micro. He was great in both. His study guides are extremely helpful for test prep. Final is very similar to class exams, so be sure to review them throughout. Some say that he is rude or doesnt care during lab, but he is really just giving you space and independence.
Sheas good. Lets you mess up and lets you fix it. I failed the first test thought I couldnt pass or would get a D at best. He replaces lowest test with score with that you get on final exam. My 38 got replaced with a 90 and I got a B so grateful I had him. Very recommended by others too.
Just finished 95 w Dr Shea he gives you every chance to do well and always takes labs and hw a little late exams are all multiple choice and there are always extra points he lets you make a cheet sheet for every test. I am taking chem I with him next.
Just had him for night lab definitely recommend you can always fix lab notebook mistakes to get a full score.
Dr. Shea is a nice guy, but he is difficult to get any feedback from. He isn't very approachable at all and it seemed like he wasn't willing to help. Lectures are boring and very short. Always ended class early. Labs were hard Go to class, pay attention and you should be fine, but this class was pretty boring.
He sits on his computer a lot & doesn't give great direction in lab. Lots of pre lab quizzes.; 4 super difficult lecture exams each 100 questions each equipped with his PHD research at the end which you answer questions on that are part of the exam lol. The final was 150 questions Shea is a nice dude, just very uninterested
Always leaves time to review near end of class. Exams just like HW no surprises at all. Easy B
He gave us like 300 mastering chemistry questions...
Professor Shea give us so much mastering chemistry questions on the last week, he dident do a review for the final and he dident give us a review for the final..
Do the all the online HWs for each chapter, real world prob solving handouts too, and the practice probs he suggests. Final exam is just like the other 4 tests just longer and given in the 3 hours so plenty of time. You can make one cheat sheet for every test I got an A no prob
he was good at the beginning of the semester but then he start to give a lot of mastering hw questions, plus he skipped two labs and dident give us a review packet.
Shea was a good friend but not a good professor, he gave us so many mastering chemistry homework.
hes a always in study room and helped me so much I got my first A never thought it was possible ty dr shea. Exams are almost identical to the hw questions about 20-30 questions per Chapter.
I never thought II would encounter a professor like him in my life before, they gave us like 500 mastering chemistry homework.
I took hybrid nick with Dr Shea for Micro. Worst decision Ive made. I passed lab with a B, but his version of micro was basically biochemistry. I understand his passion for chem, but he was responsible for teaching beginners micro. He uses his own articles for test material. The tests were very difficult.
Got an A in micro he tells you exactly whats on the test. Use notes w study terms sheet and an A was easy. Lab quizzes are word for word from what you do in lab.
Made us do HW and study for tests and typical stuff like that that you can expect in college. Ill give him a 5 for doing his job and being a role model to me and making me a better student. TY SHEA. Glad he gave us 25 hw questions per chapter and removed all the penalties for late work.
He give us about 50 home work questions and each question had 4 pasts.
Best online class but you need to come for lab once a week. The HW is integrated w the ebook so textbook needed and to answer questions you need to read chapter w ebook. Tests hard but open book. Discussion interesting and I learned a ton.
Dr. Shea is the best professor around. You can tell this guy is incredibly smart, but he is able to boil concepts down to a manageable level for undergrad students. Such a pleasure to be in his class. He doesnt like wasting peoples time so every second of class (lecture and lab) is spent doing something productive. Always willing to help!
hardest class i have ever done. doesn't post any grades and tests and quizzes make no sense.
I really enjoyed Dr. Shea as a person, hes really cool and makes the content understandable in lecture. His exams however are a beast. 100 questions each and the questions are really specific. I got high 60s on every exam but with all the extra grades from homework and projects and a take home test I managed to pull a B which i wasnt expecting.
I studied a reasonable amount and got 90s on all tests and quizzes. I am taking him again in a different class this fall. Shea is very fair.
Easy A or B He tells you exactly what to know for the test and the tests are identical to what you do in class. Its impossible to be surprised on the test if you come to class.
He is an amazing teacher. He is very supportive and help in everything you ask for.
he was always late to class and he let us early, please do not take class with him
One word ... horrible. I ended up failing his class. I am a hard working student who studies and I went to every single class and it was very hard. He always let us out of class early or arrives super late. And dont ask a dumb question because he will surely make you feel stupid and not answer. Its in the textbook. Save yourself the trouble.
This class changed my life for the better. Dr shea was patient with me and let me learn my way. Always left time for questions at end of lecture which was really appreciated.
Extra points on every test and he replaces your lowest exam score with what you get on final exam. I turned a C Into an A in a week. Wish I could have him for chem 2.
he was always late to class and he never explain anything lol, dont take him please, smh...
worst teacher ever he does not explain anything his homework takes at least six plus hours to complete always late to class makes you feel stupid if you ask a question
I'm currently taking this course as an online summer class. I'm writing this to let future students know that the lab was TWO HUNDRED NINETY ONE DOLLARS not incl. the textbook which was $100. That alone is more than half the cost of the class. I have to take this to fulfill my science but if I had known earlier.. I would've switched to another.
Had Dr Shea when we switched to online with covid. When we came back to school online, everything was perfect in our blackboard. Notes, practice problems, discussion forum. Good organization that I appreciated in that time stressful to me. Def take again.
Im in bio 205 micro and our lab is dirt cheap through McGraw Hill labs and its all simulation online. Everything in lecture and lab modules are easy to follow and discussion forum is really interesting and first test very fair. Lots of different perspectives in topics in discuss forum so lots of interaction. Just wish this was in person.
Organized and helps a lot. Very responsive and answers emails within an hour. Any questions I had he pointed me in the right direction.
Had for essential chemistry and lectures were easy to follow and everything step by step. Recordings are uploaded too so its really impossible to think he doesnt literally provide you with everything. Test questions are identical to what you do in class if you show up or watch the vids.
Practice problems always assigned. He uses a lot of free open Ed resources so thats nice. Use the notes to identify sections in book. Exam is really similar to practice problems. Study the practice test over and over and this online course is straight fwd. Discussion forum actually helps so that is good too for long synthesis and spec interprets.
All the modules are clear and same style each module so You get into the pattern. Gives multiple days to get exams completed so thats nice for planning. High recommend. Literally everything is laid out clear as can be
Easy A if you do what is required, do discussions And Homeworks and The exam is real similar. The more discussions and hws that I did the better I did on tests and I got my grade up to an a by the end.
Tests match Hw assigns and hw matches the notes and lab recordings are real easy to follow. Everything is online and easy to find in blackboard.
I had dr shea for summer online microbio and course set up is easy to follow and everything is in blackboard. Exams were long in mastering but still represent the content on the videos and home work.
I felt like I didnt even have a teacher throughout the entire class. Didnt respond to emails. Took him over 6 weeks to grade week 1 assignments. Not helpful at all. After paying for the class you then have to purchase 2 more websites that are not included
Each week there is a discussion that does relate to life and makes the content make. more sense. Some parts are tough but open notes exams helps. Exams r in the same mastering program as hw so that helps. Easy A if you put time in or easy B cruising through. Lectures all recorded and labs automatically graded upon complete.
Kinda geared to environmental chemistry and very good. Common sense discussion each week that does not take too much time. Exams match HW. Pretty easy A if u watch his videos, do discussions and Hw consistently. I got an A with a 89.6 avg so he bumps.
Exams exactly matches class content and online hw. Really impossible to not do well. Class is mostly examples and problem solving, kinda just like exam.
4 multiple choice tests that made chem easier than it was in high school. A bit of math but nothing more then basic algebra. Was a very easy a.
he is very laid back. He doesn't care for lab as much, helps you get through that. However for lecture... good luck. you will be completely clueless when it comes to an exam. no study guides, and you don't even get your tests back.
Gives you all time needed on exams and questions are all in the notes. No need to read the book but do online hw because that counts 10% and bumped me to an A.
Do not take class with this man!!! he does not care at all if you know what you are doing and doesn't give studying resources. save yourself!!!
made to feel dumb when I asked a question.
homework took 4-5 hours each sunday night and it was taught the following class. confusing busy work that didn't even count much toward your grade
He was a fantastic professor. The lectures were straightforward, the labs were simple and doable in 2 hours or less. The homework was fair considering that he gave us a week plus to do them. All exams were multiple choice and most of it was from homework. Overall was a really kind, understanding professor. I would highly recommend this teacher.
Replaces lowest test with what you get on final exam. Pretty easy A all you need to do is learn fairly reasonable chemistry. All notes were always posted ahead of time and all exam questions are straight from the notes and the mastering hw. Was not surprised once.
Chemistry 105 totally online. Lab kit is easy and way better than doing lb on campus. Have to take pics of results and do lab reports through extra site. Recommend for science req.
took Chem095 w/Dr Shea on line because of the ratings. BIG MISTAKE!!!!! doesn't respond to emails, if your a beginner and need help stay away, each assignment will require over 2-3 hours, HW is hard and lectures nor videos helped me.
Failed Chem in HS and needed 95 to get into nursing. Easy A just watch the recordings a few times and do the mastering. Thanks Shea!
Had Shea for Chem 1 and stevens for Chem 2 . Highly recommend doing the same. They both did lots of Chem problems in class instead of reading slides. Exams the same, problems just different numbers easy
Had to take chem again to get into the nursing program. Shea was okay, lectures were straightforward, HW done through Mastering, make sure you do the HW's and follow-ups, they count toward your final grade. He drops your lowest exam score for your final exam score, wasn't responsive to emails at all. Would not take again online or in-person.
Had dr Shea for online lecture. He hs recorded it all and watch on your time so that was nice no defined time other than lab. Mastering hw helps because follow up assignments helped me fix mistakes, highly recommend and responded within hours to emails
I registered and completed 105 Chem Concepts while I was in Italy. Exams are taken in the HW program and lbs are easy to do w lab kit. Few hours of video watch and hw each week and an easy lab was an easy A.
Did not give a lot of guidance, not very good at replying to emails. I achieved an A+ no thanks to him unfortunately. Maybe he shows more passion in the more advanced classes.
I took this course as a hybrid which I prefer to totally in person. Always answered lecture questions in lab which was nice. Tests are in the same online program as the weekly HW so that was nice. Very responsive by email and announcements all term that was nice too.
DO NOT TAKE CHEM 105 ASYNCHRONOUSLY I have felt like a slave since August 28th. Expect to pay over $300 for the textbook website and lab materials. I have about 5 hours of homework each week, a discussion board essay, and 1-2 labs that may take 5 hours each, and sometimes more! Do not take this course online asynchronously. My sanity is no more.
Provides everything needed thru videos and tests look just like like Hw but timed. Can test out of some Hw by doing good on others.
happy w feedback and communication. Would take again.
Chem 95 online was clear and simple. Everything is organized in modules and the pattern repeats.
Dr. Shea is a reasonable and intelligent guy. He gives you everything you need to succeed however I was not pleased with how much homework was required in his class. It feels impossible at times to manage the courseload when taking other classes full-time. Other than how demanding the course is, I learned a lot.
Good.
Clear online structure, repeating pattern. Mastering homework and follow-ups helpful. Lectures straightforward, but limited professor responsiveness. unstuckstudy proved a useful study tool alongside the textbook.
Helps a lot. Always replies to questions and discussions and lab feedback. Easy A if you try a little bit and do the box kit labs. Wish I could take again. If you need help, just ask. Def recommend for science req.
I missed a test and was allowed the op to do it late. I thought I was going to fail because of this. Just ask, the professor is always willing to help. Yes would take again. Every module has 2 HW assignments. Both easy just watch the lectures. Replied quickly to my messages.
