Mr. Smalenberger is by far the best math teacher I've ever had at UNCC. He makes a difficult class easy to understand. Very clear explanations and lots of examples. You definitely have to work hard though. Long homework assignments, and frequent tests and quizzes. He does not take attendance though. Very personable and easy on the eyes.
I really enjoyed having Mr. Samlenberger as my professor for stats. I would say that if you are not good at math, he probably isn't the best match for you. He is extremely straightforward and moves quickly. If you put in the hours and work you will do great. Past common finals are so helpful in this class, as he uses exact questions on quizzes.
Mildly challenging class, we often sped through subjects, leaving a lot of students confused but too afraid to speak up and ask to slow down. Don't take unless you're good at learning math really fast.
He moves extremely fast through the material and before you know it you're on to the next chapter before you even take a quiz or do homework on the previous one. He makes you write a ton of notes that do not help with the actual homework. I went to the MLC and even the tutors had trouble figuring out how to answer the problems.
Such a good teacher! He will repeat things as many times as needed. I took this class before with another teacher and nearly failed, so i dropped it. Taking it a second time with Mr Smallenberger was awesome. This is the last math class I have to take. If you study past common finals book like he says you'll do fine. I went from an F to a B.
I struggled at first in this class, but then he said to use the past common finals to study for tests. He gives a lot of quizzes and tests which is annoying, but if you mess up on one it lets you bring up your average on all the other ones. Don't bother buying the book, just the past common finals book which is really helpful. Would recommend!
This is one of my favorite math teachers. Although I'm pretty good at math he makes it very understandable by taking you step by step. Each quiz is exactly taken from the past common finals. You have to go to class to get the notes, even though attendance it not mandatory. Overall great guy and would defiantly take this class again.
Great class. I feel like I learned the material. We had a quiz and homework for almost every chapter, so you have many chances to get your grade up. He randomly gives extra credit for just being in class so I would go to every class. He takes the lectures straight from the book so if you do miss a class it is not hard to catch up.
If you aren't good at math do not take this class. He moves fast and assigns homework and gives quizzes constantly. He takes forever to submit grades, don't expect to know your grades quickly. Gave extra credit once so that helped. Exams are normally taken from other past common final questions. Don't expect for him to reply to email soon or at all
Definitely recommend him for stats. He's one of the few math professors that you can actually understand because he doesn't have a heavy foreign accent. He teaches clearly and thoroughly. Very funny guy, very chill. Not a hard class as long as you pay attention to the lessons and ask questions in class. He will take time to answer your questions!
He is such an awesome professor!! He makes sure everyone understands what is going on and takes time to answer questions. There is a homework and quiz for every chapter but they come from past common finals.
He is an awesome professor. I've taken stats three times before I took it with him and obviously didn't do well either time I took it until taking it under his instruction. His teaching technique is simple, easy to follow, and he makes sure the class understands the material before moving on. I would highly recommend him as a professor.
Literally one of the best math professors I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and go take him because you won't regret it. I love him and his teaching techniques.
He is very caring about all of his students, but if you aren't naturally good at math his class might not be for you. He uses Hawkes online for MATH1100 which requires you to watch lessons and complete quizzes and homework assignments online before the material gets explained in person. He is very accessible and caring, but the style wasn't for me!
Smalenberger is the best math professor I've ever had. He cares about his students, caters to everyones learning style, and makes sure everyone understands the material. His teaching is straightforward and clear and prepares you for tests and the final substantially. I wish he taught every math class. Go to class and take notes-- you will pass.
He's a little dry but he's very straightforward about what he wants you to know. He pretty much just prepares you for the final. Sometimes he will move a little fast but he's open to questions. Quiz and HW assignment every chapter. About 4 tests. He does offer extra credit only at the end of the semester.
Pretty much everything is online except for test and the final exam. He is easy to approach and checks throughout the class to see if everyone understands. Make sure to show up so you don't fall behind.
Simply one of the best math/stats professors! Highly recommend! His classes fill up super quickly, so register as soon as you can.
Professor Smalenberger is probably the best stats professor at UNCC. He is amazing at teaching the content and really knows how to teach for it to make sense for everyone. I could not recommend him enough. He really prepares you for the common final and what is on his homework and tests. He does tons of examples and makes sure no one is left behind
He is an amazing teacher and tries to help you learn the material. The test questions are similar to quiz questions and he is easy to understand. Gives an extra credit opportunity near the end of the semester. Great teacher.
He is definitely the best option for an introductory stats course. Hes one of the only profs very fluent in English and explains the material well. He offered us a significant amount of extra credit to help our grades before the final. Get in his class!!!
This is by far one of the best professors at UNCC! Really knows the material and made the class enjoyable for people who struggle with math in general. He is down to earth, super funny and always happy to answer any question. Would definitely take again!
Amazing statistics professor if you struggle with math. He teaches in ways that will help every type of learner understand what is going on, and goes through enough problems in class that there's no way to pass unless you aren't trying.
Super nice - gives so much extra credit it is almost impossible to not make an A or B.
Smalenberger is a great teacher! He really cares about whether all his students understand the material. He's really nice and offers some great extra credit opportunities. Every class has important info so make sure you don't skip. The practice tests and homeworks really help!
Super cool professor, easy to understand. If you follow along with the class and study the homework then the tests will be easy. This is the best Stat professor you'll find at charlotte highly recommend
Easily one of the best professors at UNCC. Teaches so everyone can understand and is very patient with students. Always available outside of class during office hours and tests/quizzes always line up with what he's teaching. There is quite a bit of homework, but it's manageable. Also offers extra credit at the end of the year, if it's needed.
This professor really taught me a lot about stat given that I am awful at math. Be prepared to study for his tests, there is not much time to take them. But, If you know what you're doing you'll be fine. This past semester he gave out SO much extra credit to his classes, enough to boost my grade up 10% but I'm not sure if he'll do that again.
He is an amazing professor! I would take him over an over again, he gives lots of extra credit and helps you out grade wise. He is very intuitive and explains anything you do not understand very well. The test comes right from the homework and booklet you buy.
Michael is a solid teacher. His quiz and test questions are very similar to the homework he gives. Very easy to meet with outside of class and wants his students to pass. He doesn't make you buy the textbook and tells you everything you need to know in class. He usually gives some sort of extra credit and is very nice to talk too.
I had Mr. Smalenbergern for statistics and he is a great teacher! His teaching methods are to the point and very understandable. He likes to make sure everyone is on the same page before getting more into material. Very easy to meet with outside of class. Just study the homework and you will do great on quizzes and tests.
Does not let you email him at all, which is very inconvenient. Hes a serious dude and will fail you if caught cheating. Teaches everything the hard way. Expects you to know calculator short cuts even if he doesnt teach them. Does give extra credit but if you put something on the wrong table he will not accepted it, I learned this the hard way.
Mr. Smalnberger is a quality Professor. Lectures are very clear and he makes sure to stop and explain himself if you don't understand. Test are literally made up of questions off of past final exams (all online, google uncc stat final exams). Do those and you'll pass every test/quiz. Beware of random attendance quizzes, they will hurt if missed.
I'm taking his class right now and I can honestly say he is one of my favorite professors. If you don't understand something and you ask him about it he will offer to just do the whole problem again. He also constantly checks in with his class to see how we're doing and if even just one person is confused about something he'll go over it again.
Very thorough with his lectures which helps you understand the material very well, doesnt post notes online so you have to get them from class, really genuinely cares about his students, really amazing teacher and everyone I know loves him
He is very easy to understand and will go over material if you have a question. He is easy to talk to and is very willing to help.
Michael is one of the best math professors I have ever had. He is very easy to understand, and explains things so nicely. He cares for all his students, and wants you do well in the class. Ask him any questions and he won't make you feel dumb. I love him and would take another math class with him again.
I usually hate math. It's not my best subject, but Professor Smalenberger really makes math seem easy. He knows how to describe things in multiple different ways. He's open to criticism, and he is a really funny guy. He's the type of professor that will do anything they can to help you pass, but you have to take the opportunities.
He was the best professor I had this year. Even in giant lecture halls, he still takes the time to listen to student questions and always makes sure everyone is ready to move on. He offers a bunch of extra credit at the end of the year. His only caveat is that he does not respond to emails (ever), and only has two days with office hours.
Smalenberger is a great professor for STAT1220. His lectures are very helpful for the homework and what he expects is very clear. For sure take him for stat.
An extremely good teacher; he teaches the material and gives plenty of practice to fully understand and memorize the formulas and other information. If you attend class regularly, you may not even need the textbook as he covers everything you need to know for the tests, and will let you know if there is something that he hasnt covered.
The absolute best professor I have ever had. I never have been good at math, but he lectures at a really good pace that is easy to follow. He gives a decent amount of practice that isn't overwhelming. He is really caring, and will take time to go over anything that you don't understand after class or during his office hours. Also gives extra credit
Dr Smalenberger is so kind. He is very accessible outside of class, he doesnt like email but is very easy to talk to. He will explain any question thoroughly with good examples and he is very good at relating it to other things to make it easy to understand. He is the best! I am taking him again for STAT 1222 and he is equally great for that too!
He is the best math teacher! HE makes everything easy and his homework and quiz questions are the same on the exam. He always explains everything until everyone is clear. Take him for stat!!
Always very clear on material and what he expects of you in class. Will always respectfully and thoroughly explain the answer to any question in class. Does occasional attendance quizzes, though only quiz/exam days are mandatory. You can afford to skip a few if you've taken stats before, but if you haven't, you should definitely go. Good class.
Pros, He's a nice guy. Cons, Class material is too easy compared to hw/exams. Exams are 40 qs and long. If you learn from being shown how to solve full and relevant problems, and struggle when only given the "essential tools"/ expected to put them all together to figure it out on your own, then this is not your guy. Huge clash for my learning type.
I thought for sure I wasn't going to pass his class. Put in the effort and find ways to do his math another way and you'll be fine. He really helps you out towards the end. Trust me on this! I'd take him again, he wasn't awful at all
Smalenberger is amazing he may come across as difficult in the syllabus but he isnt. His lectures are very easy to follow he takes time to make sure every student understands what is happening and answers all questions. He offers a great extra credit opportunity at the end of the semester. His tests often have the same problems from the homework.
Nice guy, but very strict on his rules. Isn't readily available outside of class. Usually I'd be ok with that as he is very thorough in his lectures, but the material on the homework and tests is much harder than the material he covers in class. On the last test, 75% of the questions were based on a concept that he glossed over before class let out
He is an amazing STAT professor and for those who say the questions arent the same were just lazy and didnt read them again. So many of the homework questions reappear on the test. If you go to his lectures he explains everything thoroughly and never makes you feel dumb.
If you have a chance to take Prof. Smalenberger, TAKE HIM! He answers everyone's questions and is more than considerate to his students. HW for every chapter and a quiz about every other. Random attendance quizzes! ALL quiz/exam ?'s come from Common Finals booklet you purchase or the online ones on UNCC website. Also, EC at end of semester!
If you're not a math person, you NEED to take him. I barely got through Algebra and ended up with an A! Really makes sure you understand the material before leaving class with tons of examples. Make sure to get the Common Final booklet, no textbook needed. Multiple choice exams, homework quizzes every week. By far one of the best professors here!
I have never been that great at math but Smalenberger completely changed that for me. He is a phenomenal professor who is so good at helping you understand the material, all you have to do is show up to the class and do the work and you will do great.
Professor Smalenberger was a really good math professor. If you take his class seriously and pay attention you will understand the material. Slip up and it gets a whole lot more difficult because the material builds upon itself. Random attendance quizzes and he offers extra credit at the end of the semester.
Smalenberger is dope! He's such a chill guy, but focuses really well on the material and gives great lectures with several examples. He assigns lots of homework and gives random attendance quizzes, but that's the hardest thing. You need the common final exam book! If you have that, tests are easy! He gives extra credit too which is very helpful :)
Best math teacher Ive had. Professor Smalenberger is always available during his office hours and cares about how you do in class. He has gone over answers multiple times to ensure everyone in the class understands the material.
Professor Smalenberger was the best professor I've had at UNCC. I'm not fantastic with math, but he made it ten times easier and is just a very likable personality. Great with answering questions, he assigns extra credit frequently. Course is fairly difficult after Test 2, but he definitely made my experience good. Pop quizzes are just attendance.
This may have been an online class, but he was supposed to put videos onto Canvas, which he never did. Exams are 40% of your grade, so don't mess up. He makes the class unnecessarily difficult, even though it's an introduction course. 0/10 would never take this course or this professor again
He is an amazing prof! He cares so much about helping his students do well. there is a bunch of online homework, 3 online and 3 in class tests. If you dont understand something go see him. Make sure you know your stuff for the in class tests. If you get the chance to take him do it!
After taking his online class, I regret my decision. He may be a good professor in class, but in an online course he doesn't help at all or go the extra step to help his students succeed. The average test grades were 52, 54, and 60. He doesn't answer emails so you must see him in his 20 min long office hours (both times I went he was a no-show)
In this course you take both online test and in class exams. There are many assignments, End of course is tough so make sure to do well in the beginning.
Fantastic professor, he genuinely cares about the success of his students and is beyond willing to work with you if you put in the effort. Online assignments give you several attempts, so it's easy to get an A as long as you don't get lazy. Multiple absences will affect your grade and he records attendance randomly, so skip class at your own risk.
You cannot hear a single damn word that he says in the videos. If you work full time then good luck because this class will not work with your schedule. When you email him with concern because of your busy ass schedule he will not care. The tests are very limited in time therefore if you're slow at math good luck.
he is very nice, and does not use a textbook but an online system and you do your homework on there. The day to do class he goes over questions, and then you have 3 tests before the actual final. Attendance is not mandatory but he does about 4 random attendance quizzes
Take this professor if you are not good at math! This was one of my favorite professors because he was hilarious and he didn't care to explain a problem if you were confused. He also drops a lot of the homework grades and gives a big extra credit assignment at the end of the semester.
The tests are heavy, but if you go to class, you'll receive extra credit in the end, as well as a chance to bring up lower test scores. Homework due every Saturday night, but helps out with tests the following week. Three tests and homework sums up the course. The prof is well respected and teaches well.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. Lectures are very well done and he is very easy to ask questions to. Genuinely cares if you understand the problem and makes lectures as entertaining as they can be.
I loved this class. He teaches well and really engages with the class. He has a very strict no cheating policy, but there isn't really a reason to cheat in his class. The online tool he uses (Hawkes) can be intensive but it's really helpful for learning the material and prepares you for the class. I recommend taking statistics with him if you can.
He couldn't teach and was a straight up mean person. He accused me of lying about a relative's death and when I emailed him proof of this and that he was wrong, he never responded. He made bs excuses about not responding to emails too but always seemed to respond immediately when it was a serious matter like tests. I got an A but do not take him...
Responds to emails quickly and is always willing to help. This was a fully online class but I was still able to learn a lot. Do not buy the textbook, we have never used it. I haven't finished the class yet but it has been great so far!
Worst class in my entire college experience. He used his pre-recorded lectures and posted them on YouTube for his entire Online class. Absolutely zero engagement for Online class students. Homework and Exams are extremely difficult with very limited time too.. for these super long Math problems. He doesn't provide study guides or any resources.
Awful class. Doesn't engage with Online class students at all. His prerecorded lectures are terrible since you can't hear anything. Limited time on Exams. The average Exam scores : 7-20 out of 40 questions really says a lot about his Online class.
Prof Smalenberger seems very disconnected from our online class. He posts pre recorded lectures on YouTube from another prof which are hours long and expects several lessons of Hawkes done a week. Other than that, he doesnt interact with us much at all. I only got a high A because I worked my butt off and taught myself pretty much everything.
Really nice and down to earth. He's really good at breaking down the topics so they're easy to understand. The online class is mostly just him answering questions people have on that week's work which makes it really easy to have time to get questions answered. I'm already registered for another class with him.
Great teacher. He says mandatory attendance for meetings but never checks attendance. Doesn't expect lockdown browser or webcam. Easiest math teacher/class.
Super easy professor who breaks things down to teach very well over zoom. Attendance is basically not mandatory and gives a week for a few modules.
I loved this class, he was always cracking jokes and was great at explaining topics. I really learned in this class, but watch out for attendance quizzes that are given randomly. Other than that I would recommend!
BEWARE you will teach yourself most things in this class. Hes a nice guy, but not the most engaging teacher out there. We used Hawkes for everything (you HAVE to buy), which can be annoying at times. The practice tests were helpful. Doesnt use lockdown browser which is also nice. Take this prof at your own risk.
Great Professor! He's straight up and tells you exactly what he expects. Class is made up of Hw, tests, and practice tests. Tests are super easy. Even if you're not good at math, he makes this class easy and understandable. Super nice and will answer all your questions. Only con is he is slow with answering emails but other than that he's great.
Good professor and very helpful. This class is strictly online. He grades based on homework assignments, practice tests, and then the regular tests. At the end of the semester, he takes off your four lowest homework grades and makes them exempt from your final grade. All you have to do is study for the actual tests and you should be fine.
Very simple and to the point. Teacher is very descriptive and understanding when explaining material you don't understand. Class is just going over any questions you may have, so class ends shortly if none but make sure to watch lectures and do notes beforehand. Good pace and exams pretty easy if you do the Hawkes software.
math is my strong suit but this class.................................... ummmmmm.......................
Was nice having a class of only about 30 people because we got better teacher engagement. He makes sure we understand and stops to explain if anyone has any questions. He is a decent lecturer, and cares about the students
This professor as a person, awesome. This class? Hardest thing I've ever done. WHOOOO told me calc was harder?!?! Just wanna talk.. The lecture videos were HEAAAVVVYYY. Zoom classes were for any questions. He never answered a single email of mine though. : It's okay because I got by. Really not sure how I passed with an A but I did. Thank you god.
Math ain't easy!! But this class was manageable, they are pre-recorded lectures so you can pause and watch at any time. The material was difficult but if you do your homework on time and reach the target goal you get 100% for the homework assignments. He also gives you practice tests for the final which was super helpful.
Great professor, he is very attentive and in contrast to some professors he actually cares if you need help during the course. He is fast on responding to emails and will answer any any questions asked. As long as you show up for class for him to take attendance and actually pay attention to the prerecorded lectures you shouldnt have a problem.
The class was very structured. You knew what to expect each week. There were lecture videos and a homework assignment each week. 4 Exams + the common final. Smalenberger is really chill, helpful and open to answering questions.
Online/In-person option for class and tests. Hawkees homework and practice test but can retake as many times as you need. Tests are half multiple choice and free response. Not the most hands on teacher only went over a few questions we already watched beforehand in lecture notes. Didn't teach us anything new. Final worth 30% of grade.
He is an awesome professor. i had to take him online and he made his own notes we could work off of and then he gave all of his notes to us. then he answered every questions with very specific details and he made sure everyone had a clear understanding of the material. HE IS AWESOME!
Gave us a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester in order to pad our final exam grades. He also dropped our 4 lowest homework grades. He did get very mad when people kept asking when our final exam was, despite the fact that he didn't make any canvas announcements about it.
Super great math 1100 professor. Hawkes HW every week, and a couple of tests as well. The tests are take home tests. Gives extra credit at the end of the semester to cover for the final exam grade. If you do all the extra credit, your grade can go up a whole letter grade. Highly recommend!
Dr. Smalenberger is honestly a really good professor who cares about his students and their grades. He gave us lots of extra credit to help bring up our final exam grade. However, he does not lecture in class, you have to watch lecture videos before class and class time is used for questions.
I enjoyed professor Smalenberger's class. I am not the best at math but he made it easy to pass so I was not stressed about that. Hawkes HW was given an automatic 100 if you completed it. There was 3 tests and to each test we had 2 parts, the written and the online multiple choice, but both were quite easy to do. He gave us a zoom option for class
I personally didn't like this class. A flipped classroom for math is a terrible idea and he refused to go over topics from previous class. There's an UNGODLY amount of homework with only a week to do it, which is hard if you struggle with math. The good thing about this class was the at home tests, half paper and half online. Explains content well
He was fine overall. He doesn't actually go over the notes unless you have specific questions, same goes with the homework. The lecture videos are incredibly long and boring, but if you're fine looking at the notes and understanding them then you are good to go. Bad with communication but seems to round exams very heavily, so woohoo!
Super understanding with COVID- participation can be in person or online. Class time is spent reviewing so youll be learning everything through videos- I personally didnt like this but it made it so you can go your own pace. Homework is all through Hawkes- do your homework!
He would only teach us what we had to teach ourselves through youtube videos. He was really helpful though when it came to explaining any material we were confused on.
He is very good in the way he teaches. The homework isn't too difficult bc he walks you through it. The class is really dependent on the questions you ask. So ask questions! He will answer questions until you understand it. The test are very hard! He treats as though they are the final so make sure you really study the material.
very test heavy no extra credit.
Professor Smalenberger was great! He offered tons of help and explained everything until we understood. He offered extra credit at the end of the semester which helped students out tremendously. There were 4 exams and the common final. He offers two attempts on the homework. Just ask questions when needed, and you can def do great in his class!
Mr. Smalenberger didn't lecture; made us watch YouTube videos on the topics and do the HW B4 class; during, we could ask any questions we had. Exams were way more complex than the HW, refused to count my attendance, despite being physically present because I didn't answer the "online attendance test" due to wifi issues preventing me. DO NOT TAKE!
Great professor, the material is very easy once you go to the lecture and do the homeworks.
Mr. Smalenberger didn't lecture he made us watch YouTube videos made by another professor at the school and then during class we could ask him any questions about what we were confused about from the videos. In class tests were worth a lot but they were multiple choice so I guess that was ok. Math is hard and he didn't make it any easier.
This professor was overall a nice person. However, the class was just a little confusing overall because we used videos, Hawkes, and lectures to learn the material, but each one taught everything differently. The tests were always so much more difficult than the homework. I studied for days and still got awful test scores.
Great prof. he knows what he is doing and constantly pushes you to ask questions if youre lost. he'll go over the material until you understand it fully. he does tend to go pretty quick when lecturing so you have to pay attention, but he does have lecture videos. very strict on quizzes and tests. hw once a week. fair grading policy.
He is one the best math teachers I've ever had! And while it is annoying that he expects you to print out notes, it's 100% worth it! He also gave us PLENTY of extra credit (up to 10% per exam!) which was awesome. His exams and quizzes are hard, but show up to class you'll be fine!
Not going to lie, this class was tough. Up until chapter 8, I understood everything but then it got really hard. He was a great professor but if you can't understand his teaching, good luck. He does try to make sure everyone understand by asking many times before moving along, so be sure to take advantage of that. The quizzes and tests can be hard.
He was really chill. He gave extra credit for all the assignments. He is good at explaining things so you understand well. Would take him again.
He had great reviews so I thought I would be fine. I struggled with stats and when I would email him to try to meet with him or ask for homework help, he would never respond. I emailed him at least twice a week throughout the semester trying to get help and he never responded once. So many quizzes and tests back to back. I would not recommend it.
Nice guy. Spends a lot of time answering questions if you have them. Explains the material really well, and if you don't understand he has office hours. Makes it very clear that he won't answer questions over email, but will in class. I would take him again, would definitely recommend.
Class average for our first test was a 34% and he still put the grade in for everyone despite us all saying it was too much. almost everyone I had spoken to in that class was failing afterwards
NOT ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE CLASS!! does NOT respond to emails.
Professor relies heavily on YouTube videos for teaching, but is helpful in explaining confusing topics during class. Tests are challenging, so staying on top of homework and using resources like Unstuck AI are key to success.
He will absolutely NOT respond to emails, other than that he is super sweet and you can tell he is passionate about teaching. The workload is not too much, but I will say I wouldn't take it online if possible.
Professor Smalenberger is great! That being said, I am someone who is good at math, so the class wasn't very hard for me. He cares about all his students, even though the class was through Zoom, and he is super understanding if there is ever an issue. I would definitely take him again for any kind of math class. If you want to do well, show up.
Professor is very informative and does a great job explaining the material. He's also helpful if you ask questions or need clarification. Attendance is mandatory, he clearly states that missing more than two classes can result in a full letter grade drop. As long as you attend class regularly and complete the assignments, you should do fine.
While his class was easy and he is a good professor, I didn't find him interesting since he spoke slow but it is good for those who struggle with math. and found myself bored. He spends the first 5-10 minuets of class addressing emails he has received from students and questions in the chat that are not math related. But he is a caring professor.
